In 2005, we automated a forklift-based Hot Metal Carrier to be capable of typical metal transfer operations around a smelter. The project was highly successful and the vehicle has demonstrated hundreds of hours of live autonomous operations to thousands of people from industry and the public. As a result of the exposure and success of the project, we have expanded its focus to demonstrate how various technology components can be utilised to gain benefits in other areas of industrial operations. These include asset tracking, vehicle usage analysis, pedestrian detection and infrastructure profiling. Each of these components was derived from the core autonomous vehicle technology suite and has shown a high potential for improving safety and efficiency of vehicle-related operations, and improved diagnostic processes for measuring deformations of bakes and furnaces. The autonomous vehicle project and its extended technologies are described in this paper.

OUTCROPS of gypsum rock near the present site of the city of Gland Rapids, Mich., were known to fur traders early in the nineteenth century. However, the deposits seemed without value and were not worked for some time. So far as cat1 be learned, Michigan gyp- sum was first used by a plasterer who settled in Grand Rapids in 1834 as a member of its fourteenth white family. In building a house for one of the early traders, be used some otnamental stucco mouldings manufactured from the local gypsum deposits for decorations in the gables and around some circular windows. The gypsum was broken out with a hammer, ground in an Indian corn mill, and burlled in a caulclron kettle,. After two attempts, the ornaments were successfully set, and remained on the house until it was destroyed by fire in 1850.

Note.—The material from which this paper has been prepared was collected tor the U. S. Geological Suvey Bulletin, No. 316, Contributions to Economic Geology, 1906, and appears also, though in somewhat more extended form without illustrations, in that publication. Although the briquetting of coals and lignites has been carried on for many years in Europe, and has reached a particularly high state of development in France, Belgium, and Germany, it has made comparatively little progress in the United States. The causes for the backwardness of the United States in this regard are several, and first among them has been the abundant supply of cheap raw fuel with which the manufactured article has to compete. With our millions of acres of coal-productive territory, from which the product can in moat cases be cheaply extracted, it has appeared in many districts more economical to waste the slack or culm, which constitutes a considerable percentage of the product, than to attempt to save it at the additional expense required for briquetting. It is for this reason that the view in all sections -of the anthracite-region of Pennsylvania is marred by the unsightly culm-banks which encumber the ground, and that in some of the bituminous-districts one sees huge piles of unmarketable slack allowed to burn up in order to get rid of them. When the coal is of a coking quality, or when the slack can be used for steaming-purposes, these losses are not sustained, but many thousands of tons of what might be converted into usable fuel have been wasted every year simply because of the increased expense involved in its preparation.

FOR the most part, recent changes in nonferrous physical metallurgy have been gradual and of a transition nature rather than abrupt modifications of existing methods. Development of new alloys containing vital constituents in what formerly would have been considered minute amounts has necessitated more precise control of metallurgical procedure than ever before. Realization of the remarkable effects of minute amounts of specific foreign elements in many alloys has brought about a revolutionary control in the selection of even the most commonplace raw materials. In addition, recognition of the widespread occurrence of precipitation hardness in metal systems, and the utilization of many of these, has emphasized not only the need for precise temperature control but also the necessity for considering the time factor in its effect upon properties in the treatment of most metals. These needs have caused the development and widespread installation of equipment that permits precision of control undreamed of a generation ago.

A mini- or micro-machine is a small electro- mechanical device. There are several existing applications of micro-sensors such as the accelerometers used in automobile airbags or the force sensors and grippers used at the ends of micro-surgery tools. Potential applications of existing mini- and micro-technologies are possible and could be used to improve the control and efficiency of fragmentation, heap leaching and other mining and mineral processing operations. A more radical proposition is to devise mass-produced, possibly disposable, minimachines that would operate in large groups. These would be the basis of highly selective, efficient, flexible, and clean mining and mineral processing methods. The paper is intended to promote discussion of how innovative applications of mini-technologies can be used to improve and radically change current mining and mineral processing methods.

"6.1. Mineralogical Techniques ApplicableTo the Platinum-Group Elements6.1.1. IntroductionThe named platinum-group minerals (PGM) usually occur as grains smaller than about 200 microns and, even when present as larger grains as in nuggets, these are often complex multimineral intergrowths. Therefore, the PGM must be examined by microscopic techniques and, because all named PGM are opaque, they are suitable for microscopic study by reflected light. Special techniques for concentrating PGM and preparing suitable polished sections are detailed in Chapter 5. Another characteristic of the PGM is that the majority have very high reflectance at 589 nm, i.e., over 450Jo, but they range from about 38 to 74%. In contrast, micro-indentation hardness has a wider range from - 60 to - 3,000 kg I mm, and the PGM range from brittle to malleable.The small grain-size of PGM imposes certain limitations, or complications, on the usual mineralogical determinative methods of reflectance, micro-indentation hardness and X-ray diffraction. In addition, certain combinations of elements in some PGM render electron-probe analyses difficult. The usefulness and shortcoming of these methods, as applied specifically to the PGM, are discussed in the following sections. These are not, however, meant to be exhaustive descriptions of the techniques, which are fully described in other texts.6.1.2. Micro-Indentation HardnessDetermination of the Vickers Hardness Number (VHN) is discussed in detail in recent publications, such as Bowie and Simpson (1977) and Craig and Vaughan (1981). In addition, the recommendations of the Commission on Ore Microscopy (COM) of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) are given by Criddle (1980). The usual small grain-size of the PGM, however, precludes the widespread use of this technique and very few PGM have, in fact, had their VHN determined at the COM-recommended standard load of 100 gf (cf. Cabri, 1981b, in Chapter 7). Examination of VHN data reported in the literature reveals that the few PGM whose microindentation hardness has been measured have incomplete VHN data, measured with loads other than 100 gf (Chapter 7). The small grain-size may also result in unreliable VHN data because, even though the correct load may have been applied, a thin grain will give erroneous data due to the matrix, or the grain may even shatter or pop out of the section. On the other hand, micro-indentations may give useful qualitative diagnostic clues. Moncheite, for example, shows fractures near the indentation (Chapter 7, Plate 1). In other cases, intergrown PGM produce different-sized indentations: e.g., froodite-michenerite-gold in Cabri (1972); isoferroplatinumtulameenite in Cabri et al. (1973); michenerite-moncheite in Cabri and Laflamme (1976) and Chapter 7, Plate 1; altaitemichenerite- testibiopalladite in Hudson eta/. (1978) and Plate 1, Chapter 7."

"The induration of iron ore pellets has always utilized prefired pellets to protect the pallet cars from the environment of the induration furnace. This paper presents the process used to obtain superior upper sidewalls. These heat resistant castings are used on induration pallet cars, and their life improvements by as much as 400% is a significant step towards the reduction of the prefired (or hearth layer pellets.) The benefit to the industry in the removal of the hearth layer is improved overall productivity. IntroductionThe Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operates with production facilities located in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Sept Iles, Quebec. It has recently been acquired by North Limited, an Australian based resource oriented company. Prior to its acquisition, IOC has examined several methods of operational cost reductions. One of these was an examination of indurrating pallets. Pallets are composed of numerous assemblies and sub-assemblies. The examination of the upper sidewalls began as an intent to increase the operational life of the component. The anticipated net effect was to be a reduction in the overall pallet maintenance cost. All of the components and assemblies have undergone a severe scrutiny. IOC has found that the success of the project has depended upon not only the technical competency of all parties involved, but also upon the ability to share risk, to be innovative, and to find a partner with whom the development can proceed without fear and yet with accountability. IOC has found in Cast Steel Products (CSP) such a partner in the field of pallet development. This paper will undertake to explore the progression into the arena of partnering between IOC and CSP. CSP and IOC met in the fall of 1994. The work of re-engineering the pallets began with an initial order for 36 pallets in March, 1995. The work on the upper sidewalls involved segregation of the effect of alloy development versus physical geometry development. The nature of partnering between the two companies allocated alloy development to IOC and physical geometry development to CSP, yet no advancements were made in either area without the close co-operation or the involvement of both partners."

This paper presents arguments which show that a velocity seismograph should be used to measure building and ground vibrations produced by blasting . However , portable velocity seismographs suitable for this type of measurement are not commercially available . The paper describes how a velocity seismograph can be assembled from commercially available velocity gages , amplifiers , and recorders . Also , specifications are given which could be used in the design and manufacture of a portable velocity seismograph suitable for measuring vibrations from blasting .

Laboratory research demonstrated that ceramic wall and floor tile can be produced from electric furnace phosphorus slags composed of calcium silicates. Grinding the slag in a pebble mill, followed by magnetic removal of deleterious magnetite, produced a raw material that could be compounded and formed into wall tile by dry pressing, sintering, and glazing. The effects of process variables such as forming pressure and sintering temperature were investigated. Wall tile bodies produced by this method were comparable to commercial tile. The tiles were readily glazed to a smooth shiny finish and met ASTM Specifications C34-62 for structural clay load-bearing tile. The estimated cost of producing wall tile by this method compared favorably with the retail market value for similar wall tile. Addition of borax or other additives to the ground slag followed by dry pressing and firing likewise produced a commercial grade of floor tile.

The utilization of production facilities in an optimum way, with reliable due date fulfillment, reducing raw material and energy consumption, are challenges iron and steel companies are facing in their business every day. By using an APS system such goals can be achieved to increase the competiveness of iron and steel producers. A sophisticated APS supports the overall planning process by applying complex rules based on product and order mix, its production routings with corresponding processing and transport times and resource availability. Specific technological as well as steel grade and energy related constraints are also considered to meet company specific KPIs. A core feature of APS solution is to react online on deviations to plan during the production process. Deviations such as nonconformance of intermediate material attached to an order, sudden production delays, unavailability of important production resources, makes it necessary to update the production plan. In general the task of APS is to support the preferred work-to-order concept, by assigning work-orders to available production facilities along the product specific process route and generate optimized material sequences for critical work centers.

"INTRODUCTION Conventional tailing storage and management practices typically utilize engineered facilities, such as ring dikes and valley impoundments. To reduce the environmental costs associated with disposing of mine wastes in tailing storage facilities (TSFs), several beneficial re-use strategies have been developed over the years. For example, thickened tailings have been used for paste backfill. It is common for tails to comprise up to 60% of the material’s total weight and it has been estimated that TSF volumes can be reduced by 60% when using this strategy, (Benzaazoua, et al. 2004). Other beneficial re-use strategies have produced unpaved temporary access roads, hot and cold asphalt, chip seals, self-compacting concrete, and golf course sand traps. This project sampled mine tailings from two different TSFs in Colorado and produced structural concrete that could potentially be used for commercial foundations, sidewalks, and paved roads. The tailings were substituted for the fine aggregates typically found in conventional concrete. The two main objectives of this study were to investigate the structural integrity of the produced concrete samples and the leaching of heavy metals from the resulting concrete. The ratio of tailings to fine aggregate (T/FA) was carefully studied to find if there was a correlation between the substitution rate and the structural integrity. The potential maximum substitution rate was also investigated for the produced concrete specimens. The potential of leaching mining impacted water (MIW) was evaluated by comparing the leachability of the raw mine tailings to the encapsulated tailings by using standard shake extraction prediction tests. MATERIAL AND METHODS Materials The four components that make up the concrete mix design for this project are: cement, coarse aggregate (gravel), fine aggregate (sand and mine tailings), and water. The type I/II ordinary Portland cement (OPC), gravel, and sand came from local cement and concrete companies in Denver, Colorado. Mine tailings were collected from two different TSFs in the Rocky Mountain Region, where Pride of the West TSF in Silverton, CO will be denoted as Site A. The primary metals of interest at the mill site are gold, silver, lead, copper, and zinc. The location of Site B will not be mentioned in this report due to confidentiality agreements with the mining company"

The majority of the powerplants in India are fed with non-coking coals, with the coals dispatched from their respective mines via wagons loaded by a rapid loading system or pay loader. The usual top size of coal is 200 mm and sampling is carried out manually from wagons. The manual method of wagon top sampling of large size raw coal is not only difficult, but also violates some of the fundamental principles of sampling. As per sampling requirements, samples are to be drawn from the full depth of the wagons, which is impossible to be done manually. Since the ash distribution in the different size fractions is not homogeneous, the results from the samples, which do not reflect the true size distribution of the lot, are likely to be biased. More importantly, sample collection by shovel from the top is a function of human discretion and not governed by the equiprobability rule. In another case, the sample has been collected by a cross belt-type auto mechanical sampler for 200 mm size coal at one of the super thermal power stations. Test analysis shows that coal collected using a cross belt-type mechanical sampler also has significant deviations from stopped belt coal samples of 200 mm size due to size segregation. Studies carried out on wagon top sampling through specially designed experiments reveal some interesting features. The presence of bias in wagon top sampling is apparent when compared with the ‘stopped belt’ sample. In this paper, a comparative study between manual wagon top sampling/auto mechanical sampling with respect to stopped belt sampling has been conducted for coal of size 200 mm. Conditions encountered at a recently completed brownfields mining project provided valuable insight into, and development of, techniques for working in and around known underground mining voids in an open cut environment. The careful application of underground blasting principles to a pit environment and successful excavation whilst maintaining appropriate stand-off distances were two primary areas of innovation enabling the success of the project.Mary Mac Hill is a gold deposit situated less than 2 km south-west of the town of Laverton, Western Australia. It is owned and mined by Crescent Gold Limited. Previous underground mining by various other mining companies has left an extensive network of underground horizontal development, subvertical stopes and shafts, some of which daylighted at surface. This was identified as potentially posing substantial risks, which would prevent the application of conventional mining methods. Two major stopes were located under a hard banded iron ridge topped by a peak of cap, connected variously by narrow drives and vertical development. Due to the proximity of the first of these stopes to the surface, its dimensions and governed by procedures and advice provided by externally engaged engineers, Crescent Gold could not access the area of the ridge immediately overlying the stope using conventional open cut mining methods. This was the first of many hurdles surmounted in mining this deposit.The following report outlines how the challenges this geometrically complex deposit presented. Solving these problems enabled the team to mine the contained gold ore to a completed design, without subjecting personnel or mining equipment to harm due to a void breach incident. This paper outlines the numerous complications and difficulties Mary Mac Hill posed and explains the strategies developed to overcome them. "In this work, a novel compound 4-Amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole was first synthesized and its selective adsorption mechanism on the surface of chalcopyrite was comprehensively investigated using UV-vis spectra, zeta potential, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectrscpy Measurements(XPS), and Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and first principle calculations. The experimental and computational results consistently demonstrated that AMT would chemisorb onto the chalcopyrite surface by the formation of a five-membered chelate ring. The first principle periodic calculations further indicated that AMT would prefer to adsorb onto Cu rather than Fe due to the more negative adsorption energy of AMT on Cu on the chalcopyrite (001) surface, which was further confirmed by the coordination bonding energies of AMT-Cu and AMT-Fe based on the simplified cluster models at a higher accuracy level (UB3LYP/Def2TZVP). The bench scale results indicated that the selective index improved significantly when using AMT as a potential chalcopyrite depressant in Cu-Mo flotation separation.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is one of the most important processes to separate valuable minerals from gangue by taking advantage of differences in the physical chemistry of their surface properties(Laitinen et al., 2014), particularly in their surface hydrophobicity. Hydrophobicity differences between valuable and gangue minerals could be regulated by adding different chemical additives (surfactants)(Kor, Korczyk, Addai-Mensah, Krasowska, & Beattie, 2014), such as collector and depressant. It could be conducted economically to selectively separate and enrich the complicated and/or poor ores, by adopting appropriate surfactants. For example, the beneficiation of molybdenite usually relies on a two-stage process to realize flotation separation of molybdenite from other unwanted sulphide ores(Wie & Fuerstenau, 1974). In the first step, a bulk molybdenite concentrate is produced by utilizing kerosene/ diesel oil and pine oil/alcohols as collector and frother, respectively. Second, sodium hydrosulphide, sodium cyanide, ammonium sulphide, or Nokes reagent are adopted as depressants in the separation stage. However, these depressants are usually toxicant and cannot meet the requirements of environmental protection. A large number of efforts have been taken to develop alternative environmentally-friendly depressants (Ansari & Pawlik, 2007; J. H. Chen, Lan, & Liao, 2013; Li et al., 2015; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhai, & Guan, 2017; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhang, Guan, Liu, et al., 2017; Yin et al., 2016). Although some novel and environmental-friendly depressants have been reported to achieve good performance in Cu-Mo flotation separation at a laboratory scale, there are still some challenging problems, including toxicity, high price or poor performance in practice, which severely limit their practical applications in Cu-Mo flotation separation on a commercial scale."

Stringent underwater noise limits at the Fairview Ave. N. bridge replacement on Seattle's Lake Union required an innovative approach to supporting the 470-ft long drill trestle. Screw-in foundations would reliably mitigate noise, but the required 500-kip bearing resistance were an order of magnitude higher than typical helical piles. This paper describes the process of designing, installing, monitoring, and testing 22-inch dia. helical piles 80 feet long with 36- and 42-inch dia. helices. A static load test confirmed that the conventional k-factor design method can be extended to capacities of up to 800 kips. A 375 ft-kip drive mechanism had to be fabricated because no North American equipment could supply the necessary installation torque. Real time installation monitoring and later "re-torque" tests confirm that helical piles gain capacity with time, analogous to driven piles under restrike. Underwater and on-land measurements confirmed very low noise, suggesting the possibility of widespread adoption where similar limits are imposed. Overall, this case history illuminates the need for innovative deep foundation types in response to ever-increasing regulatory constraints.

Iron ore in Bellary-Hospet region is friable in nature and generates a significant amount of micro-fines (-150 µm) during mechanized mining, handling and processing. Present beneficiation practice generally employs spiral classification followed by hydrocycloning to remove slimes (-15 µm). The iron ore fines, beneficiated at JSW Steel Ltd., Karnataka generates tailing having 48-52% iron content in the form of slimes, which accounts for 50 to 55% by weight with respect to classifier overflow. The loss of iron as slime is considerably high. In this context, laboratory studies were carried out with different combination of beneficiation techniques with an objective to develop an efficient flow sheet to achieve better product grade and recovery from classifier overflow. The results revealed that de-sliming process by hydrocycloning in combination with either magnetic separation or froth flotation leads to increased iron loss in tailing. Based on investigation it is observed that forward flotation is beneficial over the reverse flotation. The experimental approach of forward flotation on classifier overflow followed by magnetic separation on flotation tailing resulted in overall product grade of 62.9% Fetotal and 70.3% yield. The tailing contains 34.6% iron, which accounts for 29.7% by weight with respect to classifier overflow.
