A process has been developed and piloted to reject copper, lead, iron, phosphorus, bismuth, antimony, elemental sulfur, and insol from molybdenite concentrate without decomposing the contained molybdenite and rhenium. The impure concentrate is first heated with concentrated sulfuric acid at 260 to 290°C for 1 hour. This bake not only oxidizes the contaminating sulfides, but also activates the concentrate for later rejection of insol by flotation. Two stages of leaching follow the sulfation step. The first is an acidified water leach which extracts the oxidized copper, iron, and phosphorous; the second leach rejects the lead, bismuth, and antimony into a warm concentrated solution of sodium chloride. Final upgrading is achieved by conventional froth flotation. The chemistry of the process as well as results obtained from its implementation in a 5,000 lb/day pilot plant are presented.

"INTRODUCTION Laboratory mineral-dressing investigations covered by this report show that ores from Montgomery County, Ark., and Morgan County, Mo., are potential sources of barite and zinc. Fine grinding and froth flotation yielded drilling-grade barite from the former and chemical-grade barite and zinc concentrates from the latter.Samples from these deposits were subjected to a laboratory investigation to develop an economic and feasible treatment. The Arkansas ore, submitted by the Husky Refining Co., consisted of an intimate mixture of the economic mineral and quartz. Fine grinding and fatty acid flotation were utilized to effect a good recovery of a drilling-grade product. The other was a zinc-barite ore submitted by the Rocky Ford Mining Co., Stover, Mo. There was no problem in the recovery of zinc (most of which occurred as sphalerite), but the recovery of barite by flotation was complicated by the presence of gangue carbonates. Ultimately, an excellent recovery of barite was achieved with a relatively new type of flotation promoter, petroleum sulfonate.In recent years, barite has become one of the major industrial minerals as an essential ingredient in heavy drilling fluids, pigments, and chemicals. New sources of this important commodity are always interesting; thus, it is the purpose of this report to present information that may permit commercial exploitation of two deposits not in production."

This study was made to determine trends in fresh water usage by California petroleum refineries, to Forecast fresh water requirements to 1975, and to evaluate water conservation practices. Statistical data used in the study were obtained largely from published sources and from records of selected companies. An adequate sampling of the State&apos;s refining capacity was obtained, and the data were extrapolated to the total California refining capacity. A breakdown of the data was then made on the basis of the following refining regions: (1) the Los Angeles Basin and Southern Coastal region, (2) the Southern San Joaquin Valley, and (3) the San Francisco Bay area. An unpublished forecast of crude oil input to refineries by a major oil company operating on the West Coast was used as a basis for predicting fresh-water usage. The 1963 fresh water intake by California petroleum refineries was 84 million gallons per day. This is expected to increase to 128 million gallons per day by 1975. The fresh-water to crude-oil ratio is increasing in all regions except the Southern San Joaquin Valley. At present, the supply of fresh water available to almost all of the State&apos;s petroleum refineries, mostly from surface sources and company-owned wells, is adequate, although shortages may develop within the foreseeable future. Present conservation methods are centered around the following four objectives: (1) minimum intake of fresh water of the lowest possible quality commensurate with sound technologic practice; (2) optimum recirculation (3) proper treatment before discharge; and (4) substitution of air cooling for water cooling.

THE materials containing copper which are refined in the United States, are, for the most part, the native, coppers of Lake Superior. Until quite recently but little pig copper was made for sale, and that came principally from the pure sulphurous ores of New England and the South, and was generally sold to refineries not far from the ore furnaces. A small amount found its way into the market which was produced either as the by-product of the treatment of gold and silver ores, or as the result of the treatment of impure copper ores; but both these grades, on account of the impurities they contained, were looked on with suspicion, and were not sought for. All the grapes of pig copper are sold by the unit of copper contents, a great reduction being made in the price when impurities are present. There are at the present time only three works which treat native copper, the two of the Detroit and Lake Superior Copper Company, and the works of C. G. Hussey & Co., in Pittsburgh. There are a few works which smelt sulphurous ores and refine their pig; besides these there are a few small works where pig copper is refined only. Some of these purchase black copper, refine scrap, or simply refine such grades of ingot copper as are found in the market, but mostly that from Lake; Superior, for the purpose of getting it into such shapes that can be handled commercially to advantage, such as in making large plates or high grades of wire for electrical purposes. A number of such works are situated in the Naugatuek Valley and elsewhere in New England. The recent discovery, of valuable ores in Arizona makes it probable that within a few years the refining of copper in the United States will make great developments. Up to the time of the discovery of the mines on Lake Superior, only a very small quantity of native copper had ever been found, not sufficient to justify the erection of works for its special treatment. It had, besides, never been found in very Large masses, so that the discovery of great-blocks of it presented serious difficulties, not only in mining it,† but in bringing it into a merchantable condition. "INTRODUCTION The provision of escapeways from coal mines is a moral and, in most States, a legal obligation of mine owners and operators. The obligation is not always fulfilled because of the hope that no occasion will ever arise requiring the use of such facilities, and, as time passes without the need for using them, a false sense of security is born in the belief that ""it can't happen here.""The disastrous fire in a mine in Ohio on July 5, 1944, again focused attention on the importance of escapeways in averting disasters and made it clear that one or more dependable exits must be provided from a mine and parts thereof where men might be trapped by being cut off from the regular travel route. This matter of always-having available travelable exits has been advocated for many years by the United States Bureau of Mines."

Abstract As part of the active development programme pursued by Dominion Magnesium Limited since 1945, a modern extrusion plant was erected and has been in operation for about twelve months. The only source of nigh purity magnesium in the world, Canadian metal is produced by metallurgical processes within the frame-work of the mining industry, which gives a different viewpoint to every phase of production from other world suppliers of commercial grade metal whose operations are based on chemical industries and techniques. The superior properties of corrosion resistance and grain refinement have aided a programme of standardization, reducing the number of alloys supplied in extruded form from seven to four as an aid to economic production. The first big step was the development of a general purpose alloy known as AZ?21x covering all decorative and medium stressed applications, which will supersede two older alloys. Sales approaching a million feet in this alloy show that it bids fair to become the &apos;mild steel&apos; of the magnesium industry, its applications ranging from terrazzo floor strip to textile machinery and television mast components. In the high stressed field, metallurgical features preclude low-cost extrusion of the older high-strength alloys, but recent development of a magnesium alloy containing zirconium promises an easily workable metal. Hitherto produced by expensive chemical additions, research now shows that the alloy can be produced by metallurgical means, which may make this alloy available for a wide range of commercial applications. Thus the future development programme for extruded products in the form of tube, bars, shapes, and structural angles and channels may evolve two alloys to cover all applications for strengths up to 52,000 lb. per sq. in. Such standardization is the result of taking advantage of the physical and metallurgical properties of high-purity magnesium instead of accepting techniques based on metal produced by older processes.

The project used blasting methods including design, modelling, drilling and loading of the explosives that had never been used before in Australia, some of these were probably unique in the world.

Mine managers need better information to locate new opportunities and then to assess the effect of their decisions. We are developing the Intelligent Decision Support System (IDSS) and its two major modules, the Pattern Recognition System (PRS) and the Knowledge Representation Subsystem (KRS) to automatically provide the information from monitoring system sensors. This paper focuses on the KRS Algorithms that extract key information from lists of time study type event sequences. Because a static system cannot operate effectively in a dynamic mining environment, we are prototyping an index based technique that allows the system to adapt itself to this dynamic environment.

Vale is the largest iron ore producer in the world. Since the 1970s, Vale has been using reverse cationic flotation to remove siliceous impurities from its iron ores. Whilst this flotation process has operated effectively for many years, it suffers from the problems of high reagent costs and high metal loss.In 2010, CSIRO investigated the use of a reverse anionic flotation process for Vale iron ore. Batch laboratory flotation studies conducted on Vale samples showed significantly reduced reagent costs and improved recovery of iron. In this work, the flotation behaviour of the different impurities in the Vale iron ore sample using reverse cationic and reverse anionic flotation processes is compared. Discussion of the paper of HAROLD EARLE COOK, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 375 to 400. ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.-I think we must all agree with Lieutenant-Commander Cook when he says that there is a great deal of room for improvement in the annealing of steel castings and that better results would be attained if the annealing were conducted in closer agreement with scientific requirements. Whether even a carefully annealed steel casting can ever be made the equal of a steel forging of good quality is still a debatable question. Nevertheless, we all realize that very greatly improved results can be attained by careful annealing. Lieutenant-Commander Cook refers to some requirements calling for annealing steel castings above the Ac1 point. He is undoubtedly right where he says that this should be the Ac3 point. Take, for example, a steel casting containing, say, 0.35 per cent. of carbon, having a very coarse structure made up of coarsely crystalline ferrite. If this is heated just above the Ac1 point the ferrite remains, of course, just as it was before, while the pearlite is converted into a solid solution, austenite. Upon cooling, all this austenite is again converted into pearlite, or sorbite, while the coarse structure of the ferrite remains unchanged and the annealing has accomplished very little. It is therefore surprising that the requirement of annealing above the Ac1 point should appear, in these specifications.

"A new raw water intake from the South Holston River to the Kingsport water treatment plant is under construction. The exploration for the 335 meter long horseshoe shaped tunnel design took advantage of the site topography along the alignment to better define the complex geology consisting of Knox Limestone and Sevier Shale formations separated by a fault zone. To assess the geological conditions and to determine the extent of the fault zone, a 183 meter long horizontal boring and geophysical investigation was performed along a portion of the tunnel’s horizontal alignment. Explorations defined the fault zone width at approximately 5 meters and packer testing along the alignment provided a means of estimating groundwater inflows. As the tunnel excavation advances, comparisons of exploratory data versus encountered conditions will be made. This paper provides details on the geotechnical investigation, lessons learned, and the influence of the geology on the tunnel design. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Kingsport WTP is supplied with raw water via the South Holston River. The City of Kingsport (City) owns and operates the Kingsport Water Treatment Plant (WTP). The existing raw water intake system, consisting of pumps, power supply, raw water piping and appurtenant facilities has been determined to be vulnerable to failure. The original Raw Water Pump Station (RWPS) was constructed in 1928 as part of the original Kingsport WTP project. The 1928 RWPS operated until 1970 when it was replaced by the existing RWPS. This existing system still utilizes the 1928 piping and piping tunnel. Improvements to the RWPS hydraulics and capacity are required to meet the City’s future water treatment needs. The system extracts water from the South Fork of the Holsten River and coveys it via three pressure pipelines to the WTP. The conveyance piping exits the RWPS, ascends approximately 23 m up a near vertical rock outcropping then enters a 120 m long tunnel. Upon exiting the tunnel the piping continues underground to the WTP. The drill and blast tunnel is horseshoe shaped and nominally 3.3 m high by 3.3 m wide. The easternmost 62.3 m of the tunnel is without any type of support. The remainder is lined with concrete. According to the City of Kingsport, the concrete lining was installed in the 1970’s as part of upgrades to the facility. An evaluation of the current facilities concluded that the conveyance piping was in poor condition and required replacement."

"In order to determine the feasibility of a hydraulic ore hoisting installation, the optimal operating conditions were calculated for applying such a system at the Detour Lake Mine of Placer Dome Ltd. Next, a financial analysis was conducted in order to estimate the cost per tonne for hydraulic hoisting of the ore. Subsequently, the cost per tonne was compared with the hoisting costs associated with a new borehole hoist. Installing a hydraulic ore hoist at Detour Lake Mine was found to be feasible with considerably lower costs per tonne of ore. The applied research method appears to be very functional and can be used to do similar research for other mining operations. IntroductionThe principle of hydraulic ore hoisting is well known, yet hardly accepted in hard rock mining. Application of the system would result in a smaller diameter shaft requirement and a flexible, easily expandable system. However, underground ore size reduction might be necessary and practical experience with the system is limited. Following recent innovations in the field of pumping hardware, e.g. new GeHo and Siemag Transplan equipment, hydraulic ore hoisting should be seriously considered for certain mining operations. As a case study, a design was made for the development of the newly found QK-Zone at Placer Dome Ltd.’s Detour Lake Mine. Hydraulic ore hoisting has been compared with conventional skip hoisting by establishing the optimal operating conditions and pumping equipment requirements for similar capacities at a selected mining operation. Generally accepted equations for slurry transport were used to predict the variation of pressure and power requirements as a function of hourly production and pipeline diameter. These data are used to select suitable equipment and estimate cost figures in order to make a financial assessment."

[The separation of enormous quantities of water produced with the oil in some West Texas fields necessitated. the use of special equipment other than the regular lease tanks. Several methods Were used with varying degrees of success. They include, the water-trap, hay tank and gun barrel, gun barrel and settling tank, chemical, and electrical-dehydration methods. The water trap which has been used extensively in the Hendricks field, and in some instances has been installed in the Yates field separates the water&apos; and. oil under high pressure before tile liquid and gas pass through the flow ?bean. The first trap was constructed and installed by the Southern Crude Oil Purchasing Co. in July, 1928. By July, 1929, approximately 300 traps were in use.]

"IntroductionWith the steady rise of the cost of coal and freight, the time is now ripe for an investigation into the feasibility of using the heat pump for heating purposes in fairly remote industrial areas.The gold mines of northern Ontario seemed to be a most likely place for the application of the heat pump.It was decided that the first step in the investigation would be to determine what economic advantage was to be gained by using the heat pump and thereby determining whether a further and more detailed research programme was warranted.If we can use the heat pump with economic advantage, we can reduce our mining costs and make a worthwhile contribution to our national economy by reducing the import of U. S. coal.The investigation was conducted under the auspices of the Nipissing Fellowship and directed by Professor R. E. Barrett of the Department of Mining Engineering, University of Toronto.With the able guidance of Mr. C. S. Gibson, of the Mines Accident Prevention Association of Ontario, the author visited the following mines: Mcintyre-Porcupine, Delnite, Dome, Lake Shore, Wright-Hargreaves, Kirkland Lake, Macassa, and Kerr Adcliso11.In all cases, the management and technical personnel of these mines were most co-operative and helpful in supplying information and ideas.It should be emphasized at the outset that the design and operation of the heat pump itself is by no means complicated or even new. The reason we hear so much about it today is because there have been improvements in compressors, motors, and heat exchangers in the past few years, and because fuel and freight rates have risen to such a point that, in some cases, the heat pump now has an economic advantage over other methods of heating."

Capper Pass & Son Limited Was, until its recent closure, the world&apos;s largest producer of tin from secondary materials including solder drosses, non-ferrous smelter flue dusts, tin based metal alloys, residues and slags. Polonium-210, an alpha emitting radionuclide, was present in varying concentrations in some of the numerous feed materials processed by the smelter and refiner. The polonium-210 followed a complex path through the process flowsheet. This paper discusses the behaviour of polonium, both from its arisings in other smelters&apos; process streams and through the entire Capper Pass smelting and refining circuit. The consequential personnel safety and environmental precautions necessarily taken in some areas of the process operation are outlined.

Tribological behavior of Si3N4 balls sliding against Al2O3 discs in water was investigated by studying the influence of parameters such as initial surface roughness and circular axial run-out of the discs. The objective was to relate these parameters with the occurrence of the phenomenon known as ultra-low friction coefficient (ULFC), which is characterized by µ < 0.01, including the correlation with running-in duration. As a general trend, greater initial surface roughness and circular axial run-out resulted in greater running-in duration. In addition, it was verified that a mixed lubrication regime (hydrodynamic and boundary) is required to guarantee the occurrence of ULFC by comparing the calculated minimum film thickness with the composite roughness of the worn surfaces. Also, ICQ-OES analysis of the water after the tests indicated that a silicon concentration greater than 1.3 mg/l should be fundamental for the occurrence of µ < 0.01.
