The ideal entering freshman for the College of Mineral Industries possesses the necessary aptitude to complete successfully a difficult technical curriculum, has a highly developed intellectual curiosity and adequate preparation in basic mathematics, sciences, and English, is enthusiastic about pursuing a career in the mineral industries, and puts forth a good academic effort while attending Penn State. The present programs of the University?s Division of Counseling and the College of Mineral Industries are directed toward providing the College with students who will meet these requirements. At present, freshmen are admitted to the Pennsylvania State University without entrance examination if they are in the upper two-fifths of their high school classes. All Pennsylvania students in the lower three-fifths are required to take the University Aptitude Test and all out-of-state students the College Entrance Board Examinations. Such students are admitted only if they score sufficiently high on either test to indicate the ability to do satisfactorily the work of University students. Only to this extent, are native intelligence and areas of greatest aptitude known for the Freshman prior to admission, and they are, therefore, largely beyond the control of either the Division of Counseling or the College of Mineral Industries. Because all freshmen, with exceptions that are numerically minor, are required to select a curriculum before admission to Penn State, each student who presents himself for required counseling during the summer, prior to his first semester, has already made a choice of his course of study. In many instances, such choices have been made without a rational and serious consideration of the student?s abilities and interests. Through tests given between the date of admission and the date of the counselling interview, it is possible to measure these characteristics and for the Division of Counselling to advise the student of his chances of success in his chosen curriculum. If he is qualified for the curriculum he has selected, Counselling Service goes on to direct the student?s attention to those other curriculums which are in the same general area as the one he has chosen and which will also challenge his abilities and correspond to his interests, Through this counselling, the curriculums of the College of Mineral Industries, which are often less well known to high school students than others for which they are no more qualified by ability or interest, are brought to the attention of the incoming freshman.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the results of laboratory work in the design of instrumentation for obtaining the dynamic tensile strength of rock at minimum loading. Minimum loading is defined as the lowest tensile loading by pulse reflection to cause fracturing. The instrumentation for obtaining dynamic tensile strengths of rock cores evolved into the use of a compressed-air pellet gun to impact one end of a rock core, suspended by wires, at increasing increments of air pressure. Maximum strain was measured on most or all of the impacts, and the strain at fracture of the core was obtained by extrapolating the pellet velocity-strain curve to the pellet velocity at fracture. Stress at tensile fracture was obtained from the maximum s train, and the dynamic Young's modulus was calculated from the rod velocity by using simple rod theory.

Introduction Responding to Congressional inquiries regarding the purchase of a number of major domestic mining and metals companies by foreign firms, the US Bureau of Mines examined trends in foreign direct investment in the US. mining and mineral processing industries1. "Foreign Direct Investment in the US Minerals Industry" analyzes the extent of foreign investment in several major mineral commodity industries. It identified the countries of origin of foreign investment in US mineral assets. The study also described several reasons for the growth of foreign investment in US minerals and discussed some potential implications of this activity. Foreign investment trends in the economy and minerals For the economy as a whole, between 1977 and 1985 the number of US affiliates of foreign investors more than doubled - from 4046 to 9824 - as did employment at these affiliates - from 1.2 million workers to 2.9 million (Table 1)2. During this same time period, the total value of assets of all US affiliates throughout the economy rose from $239 billion to $736 billion (1985 constant dollars). In the domestic minerals industry, foreign investment also grew substantially during that same time as the number of US minerals-related affiliates increased by 74% - from 125 to 217 - between 1977 and 19853. During the same period, employment at all foreign-owned affiliate mineral operations in this country increased by 78% and totaled 198,000 workers at the end of 1985. Parallelling the growth in the number of and employment at foreign-owned US mineral and metal operations, the total value of US mineral assets owned by foreign firms (or individuals) has nearly doubled since 1977 and amounted to $30.9 billion at the end of 1985. The rate of increase in foreign investment in US mineral assets was slightly higher in the metals industries than in the nonmetallic groups. Foreign investment more prevalent in minerals Perhaps a more useful way of evaluating the growth in foreign investment is to analyze growth in the "intensity" of foreign investment - the proportion of total US industry assets held by foreign investors. Although insufficient data on total industry assets prevented the development of such a measure, employment data provide an indication of relative differences in the intensity of foreign investment among the mineral industries and other industries. For example, as noted in Fig. 1, the 198,000 minerals industry workers employed at US-affiliate companies in 1985 represented 12.7% of total employment in this sector of the economy. In comparison, for the mining and manufacturing sectors of the economy as a whole, 7.8% of all workers were employed at US-affiliate firms in 1985. For the total economy, 2.7% of the entire civilian employed workforce worked at US-affiliate firms that year. Using employment as an indicator, foreign investment has been more prevalent in the minerals industry than in most other industries. About one worker in eight in the minerals sector was employed at a US-affiliate firm in 1985. "Developing markets for western metallurgical coal have continued to stimulate considerable exploration activity in the Rocky Mountain foothills and to influence major segments of a wide-ranging carbonization R&D pro-gram. Adjunct studies have included expanded petrographie investigations.Coal preparation has• been principally directed toward utilization of prepared small coal and was, like much of the year's combustion work, strongly influenced by concern over atmospheric pollution. Particular attention has been given to desulphurization and to the suppression of pollutants in combustion systems.In the area of non-fuel utilization of coal, interest has centered on plant nutrients and on a series of coal-based carbons which, inter alia, possess utility as filtration media.Other projects included the development of improved sampling and analytical methods, investigations into the effect of storage on coal proper-ties and R&D in solids pipelining. In response to requests from its stakeholders, the International Standards Organisation is engaged in development of an international standard for Energy Management Systems (EnMS) which will become "ISO 50001". This new standard will build on the successes of both the EN16001 EnMS standard that has been used by dozens of European companies, as well as the ANSI/MSE 2000:2008 EnMS standard that is currently being used in several pilot projects in the USA and Ontario. This paper provides an overview of the key points of the EnMS standards, and describes how they can be used to drive sustainable energy reductions in the metallurgy industry.

In Fayette County, the Pittsburgh bed has been the major source of production for almost two centuries. Although historical documentation is not available, there is evidence, that the Pittsburgh bed may have been discovered in Fayette County near Mt. Braddock, Pa., as early as 1753. The earliest known reference to coal in western Pennsylvania was recorded in 1758 by a Quaker trader, James .Kenny, who reported having seen coal in Fayette County. The production of coke from Pittsburgh coal was begun in 1841, when two 10-foot beehive ovens were erected in the Connellsville region to make coke .for shipment by river to the market. The Connellsville, region extends from Latrobe, Pa., in Westmoreland County to South of Uniontown, in Fayette County. Connellsville coke was used with great success in the Clinton furnace in 1859.

"In beneficiation process, metal ions could adsorb onto clay mineral surfaces or interact with flotation chemicals, and then result in the flotation behavior changing of desired minerals. Al(III) is the dominating ion existing in the bauxite flotation system. In this research, the adsorption behaviors of Al(III) on two silicate clay minerals (including bentonite and kaolin) were investigated by means of UV-Vis spectra, zeta potential testing and scanning electron micrograph analysis. The adsorption experiment results show that the adsorption capacity of clays for Al(III) ions increases with the initial Al(III) concentration, contact time and solution pH. There are some different adsorption behaviours for two clays. Increasing the clay concentration decreases the adsorption capacity of bentonite, while increases first then decreases for kaolin. Higher temperature favours the adsorption of Al(III) on bentonite but goes against for kaolin. The adsorption capacities of bentonite and kaolin for Al(III) respectively reach 12.48 and 0.875 mg/g at initial solution pH 5. Zeta potential results show that the adsorption of Al(III) on two clays is characterized by electrostatic attraction mechanism.INTRODUCTIONIn beneficiation process, there is inevitably a wide variety of metal ions generated from mineral crushing, mineral dissolution and water chemistry conditions. Metal ions adsorb on the mineral surfaces or interact with the beneficiation agents, affecting the flotation efficiency of desired minerals (DiFeo et al., 2001; Parolis et al., 2008; Shackleton et al., 2012; Shengo et al., 2014). Therefore, it is necessary to have a detailed investigation on the adsorption behaviour of metal ions on clay minerals.Having good ion exchange capacity and negative surface charge, the clay minerals could take up various metal ions from the mineral-water system. Bentonite and kaolin are very common aluminosilicate clays in the mineral processing system. These two clays both hold a permanent negative charge, =X- on the basal surfaces, and a smaller variable charge, =SiOH on the mineral edges (Gu & Evans, 2008; (Gu et al., 2010). Adsorption experiments are usually used to study the adsorption affinity of metal ions for clay minerals (Sen & Bhattacharyya, 2012). The adsorption of Zn(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) onto natural bentonite showed that the adsorption amounts of metal ions increase with contact time, solution pH and metal ion concentration, but decreases with adsorbent concentration and system temperature (Sen & Gomez, 2011; Melichova & Hromada, 2013). Cr(III) adsorption on bentonite was significantly pH dependent. The adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order model and the equilibrium adsorption was consistent with Freundlich isotherm (Lollino et al., 2015). The adsorption behaviours of Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) onto kaolin indicated that increasing pH favoured the adsorption of metal ions (Jiang et al., 2010). The adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) onto kaolin showed that an ion-exchange reaction occurred at pH<7.0 and inner-sphere surface complexes were prone to form at higher pH (Srivastava et al., 2005)."

The grinding circuit can be one of the most important mineral processing circuits in plants. Along with the application of large-scale milling machines, the design and optimisation of the operation strategy for grinding circuits is more complicated. An in-house grinding process simulation tool was developed to mass balance, model fit and simulate crushing, grinding and classification circuits. An industrial grinding and classification circuit in a copper mine was modelled, and the modelling parameters were verified by a particular group of plant survey data. To justify the prediction ability of the fitted models, the model predictions under different operation conditions were compared with another group of plant survey data. Then the model predicted the effects on the circuit of changing operating conditions. Circuit analysis of the comminution process for water feed to a SAG mill, water feed to sump, the rolling speed of a SAG mill and the percentage of ball filling in a SAG mill was put into practise, based on the simulation results. The simulation results can be used to help plant operators understand the features of the comminution process and may help to build a knowledge library for process control. "The corrosion of commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) was studied from room temperature up to medium temperature (~160°C) under conditions relevant to medium temperature chalcopyrite leaching processes. The corrosion rates were measured by immersion and electrochemical tests in sulfuric acid. The influences of chloride, cupric and ferric ions on the corrosion rate and behavior were also investigated. Corrosion of the CP-Ti did not account for the total current density measured by linear polarization tests. The corrosion rates of CP-Ti under medium temperature leaching conditions were surprisingly high. The corrosion rate measured in ferric containing solution at 160°C was approximately 20 mm/yr.INTRODUCTIONTitanium exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in many aggressive environments because of the formation of a very chemically stable, highly adherent, and protective oxide film on its surface (Mitsuo et al., 2002). Because titanium is the only metal available at a reasonable cost that resists the high temperature corrosive slurries in many leaching processes, it is often chosen as autoclave liner material where it is subjected to severe conditions of acidity, temperature and pressure (Grauman and Say, 2000).A number of distinctly different hydrometallurgical processes for the pressure leaching of chalcopyrite have been developed and patented by various companies and they can be classified into low, medium and high temperature regimes (McDonald and Muir, 2007). For example, chalcopyrite concentrate may be processed at medium temperatures (115-175°C) and pressures of 800-2200 kPa (Dreisinger, D., 2006; Sahu and Asselin, 2011). The lixiviant may contain 20 to 55 g/L sulfuric acid, 8 to 12 g/L chloride ions, 10-25 g/L Cu2+ (Jones, 1995, 1997, 1999), and less than 1 g/L Fe3+ (Defreyne et al., 2005). The amount of these additions is determined by the grade of the ores and details are shown in Table 1."

The first part of the project was a literature study and a survey including an evaluation of the answers provided by members of EFEE. The results were presented at the International Society of Explosives Engineers (ISEE) conference in Denver 2020 as well as the EFEE conference in Helsinki in 2019.

Thus wrote Pliny in his "Natural History," that great collection of fact and error which constitutes the principal contemporary description of Roman technology and which until the seventeenth century was the authority most often quoted and requoted by those who wrote on metals, as on many other subjects.

Mine workers using diesel-powered equipment experience the highest occupational exposure to diesel particulate matter (DPM). This problem could be aggravated in underground stone mines due to their unique ventilation challenges with the large openings for airflow. Hence, adequate ventilation in these mines requires a combination of effective ventilation planning and delivering needed air quantities using auxiliary fans and stoppings. To meet this challenge, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Air Quantity Estimator (AQE) software as a mine planning tool to help underground mine operators estimate the air requirements necessary to dilute DPM in the main air stream to statutory levels. The major parameters required for the calculations are the engine’s horsepower, DPM emission rate, the percentage operating time, catalytic converter efficiency, and filter efficiency. In efforts to provide major updates to this software, this study describes the recent development of a revised version of the Air Quantity Estimator (AQE 2.0). With the revised version, users have access to a comprehensive database of over 40,000 pieces of equipment, can define their specific target DPM level, and can create specific equipment for a customized database, in addition to having an improved easy-to-use interface. The software output provides an estimated total airflow necessary to dilute DPM based on the projected emissions, and the user can generate a related results report. The results also provide the mine personnel with a tool to identify vehicles that are high DPM contributors and could further be used to optimize the ventilation requirement by making changes to the percentage operating time of the engine. This software provides the mine with a user-friendly tool that could help reduce the DPM exposure of workers.

Application of rock engineering in geotechnial consulting practice considered herein is in areas of: (a) bedrock verification for foundation support, (b) bearing capacity and settlements, and (c) excavations. A routine geotechnical investigation usually provides data on depth to rock, rock classification, and rock quality. In cases of rock outcrop, such outcrops are mapped for geologic structures and rock mass description. In addition, the regional geology and the general aspects of the groundwater regime are usually known from either published literature or previous experience. The predominant technique for ground and site investigation are usually drilling and geologic reconnaissance. Other techniques involving seismic and geophysical soundings, borehole camera, and oriented cores are used by by no means routine. Performing laboratory strength and compressibility tests is often made to be considered as routine. The use of the point load test is gaining increasing use in the United States and would, perhaps, become a routine field or laboratory test due to its simplicity and, more importantly, its relatively low cost. The purpose of this paper is to describe cases where mostly routine investigation and testing were used to arrive at engineering decisions. Bearing Capacity and Settlements The allowable bearing values for foundation support on rock is usually dictated by local building codes which presumably should reflect local experience. The interpretation of the code, however, can present a problem, especially if the interpretation is made by a designer under the delusion of knowledge in rock engineering. For

"Ground vibrations from blasting are undesirable and they are very short in duration with high principal frequencies and high amplitude. Structural response to that kind of excitations may differ significantly from that generated by lower-frequency earthquake vibrations. In practice, the damage to nearby structures to generated ground vibrations has been controlled by various codes and regulations available. However, the existing vibrations limits are not always applicable, as they depend on the geological conditions of the site and the dynamic characteristics of the structure. This paper investigated the influence of the rock-soil interface on the response of pile foundation to ground-borne vibration from rock blasting, through numerical simulations using finite element software LS-DYNA. It is found that the slope of the rock-soil interface greatly influences the location of damage and the extent of damage on the pile. The bottom of the pile is subjected to a larger blast pressure and stresses are highly concentrated at the pile bottom. Thus, the pile bottom can fail in shear before it reaches its plastic moment capacity.INTRODUCTIONDrilling and blasting is the widely accepted method to large-scale rock breaking activities in civil engineering constructions due to its cost effectiveness, higher efficiency and ability to break hard rock. However, ground vibrations from blasting are undesirable and it can cause damage to nearby structures. In practice, the damage to nearby structures to generated ground vibrations has been controlled by various codes and regulations available. The existing vibration limits are not always applicable, as they depend on the geological conditions of the site and dynamic characteristics of the structure.Pile foundations are commonly used as foundations of high-rise buildings and bridges to transfer the heavy loads from the superstructure above through weak compressible soil strata into deeper, competent soil layers which have adequate capacity to carry these loads. In engineering practice, many piles are normally designed to carry mainly vertical loads and very little lateral loads, as typically the vertical loads (the gravity) are significantly larger than the horizontal loads such as wind loading. However, in recent years, there have been a number of reported case studies of translational soil movements that have induced stresses and bending moments that have damaged pile foundations and in some cases resulted in collapse of the superstructure. Typical lateral load include nearby construction activities such as an excavation for a basement or slope, the construction of a road embankment or a tunnel, as well as earthquakes (Abdoun 1997; Goh et al. 1997; 2003; Chen et al. 1999; Dobry et al. 2003; Boulanger et al. 2007; Black et al. 2007)."

During the past ten years a number of papers have appeared describing zeolite occurrences in the western United States in Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, altered bedded Tertiary pyroclastics, playa lakes, hot springs, and amygdaloidal basalts. With the emergence of natural zeolites as economic industrial minerals it appears, useful to develop a system of classification to delineate those zeolite deposits of economic interest which were not discovered until the middle 1950&apos;s. The first attempt at a classification of naturally occurring zeolites was made in 1914 by Lindgren l when he classified the zeolites into eleven groups based on their mode of occurrence. The zoned zeolites in the Mesozoic rocks of New Zealand and elsewhere were classified according to the mineral assemblages by Fyfe, et al.2 in 1958 as a zeolite facies corresponding to low grade regional metamorphism. In 1966, Hay suggested as an alternative to the preceding classification one which would "classify as diagenetic all mineral assemblages produced in sedimentary rocks under conditions in which zeolites are formed." In this paper a classification is proposed with the objective of providing an overall perspective of the zeolite occurrences in the western United States.

HE valuable mineral content of the current feed -*- to the Miami concentrator is as follows: copper, 0.7 pct total; molybdenum, 0.01. Flotation of this ore yields a sulphide concentrate containing: chalco- cite, 44 pct; molybdenite, 0.5; pyrite, 50.0; insol, 5.5. A combination of potassium ethyl xanthate and pentasol amyl xanthate as collectors, and pine oil as frother, are used in this flotation. Rejection of pyrite is encouraged by holding the amount of collectors used to the minimum consistent with copper recovery and by operating at high alkalinity (equivalent to 0.35-0.40 lb CaO per ton solution of pH 11.0). The molybdenum recovery in the sulphide concentrates under the above flotation conditions is approximately 50 pct of that originally present in the ore. Taking into account the acid soluble molybdenum, indicated molybdenite recovery is 75 to 80 pct. The attempt to separate the molybdenite into an acceptable molybdenum product begins with the bulk sulphide flotation concentrate just described. This concentrate is composed of chalcocite, whose floatability has been promoted to the fullest extent possible for the sake of its recovery from the ore, together with the pyrite which has been activated along with the copper mineral. The problem is to deaden the copper and iron minerals, and to float the molybdenite. Obviously in the accomplishment of this end, conditioning and preparation of the pulp, prior to flotation, plays an all important role. The first step is thickening to 50 to 60 pct solids, with milk of lime added to the thickener feed to maintain an alkalinity of the pulp equivalent to a pH of 8.5 to 8.8 during its residence in the thickener. The purpose of the thickening is primarily to reduce the volume of pulp for subsequent treatment. However, the relatively prolonged retention of the pulp in the thickener at the desired alkalinity is known to have a favorable depressing effect upon pyrite. There is a limit for this alkalinity above which a depressing effect upon molybdenite occurs. The thickened pulp (alkalinity: 0.015 lb CaO per ton, pH 8.8), discharges into an agitator, retention time approximately 2 hr, to which additional lime is added to raise the alkalinity to 0.35 to 0.40 lb CaO per ton solution, pH 11.6. This additional lime is required for pyrite depression and can be tolerated without loss of molybdenite because of the limited time of contact in the conditioner tank. The pulp leaving the lime conditioner passes through two successive steaming tanks, which are mechanically agitated, and into which live steam is admitted directly into the pulp near the bottom of the tanks. The temperature of the pulp is maintained as near boiling as possible. The steaming time is approximately 4 hr. The pulp leaving the last steamer has an alkalinity of about 0.04 lb Cao per ton solution, pH 8.7. It is believed that oxidation of the copper and iron sulphides occurs during steaming, the resulting sulphates reacting the calcium hydroxide to calcium sulphate and thus reducing the alkalinity. Since the steamer-feed solution is already saturated with calcium sulphate, the calcium sulphate produced during steaming is precipitated. It is believed that this calcium sulphate is precipitated preferentially on copper and iron mineral surfaces thus decreasing their floatability. Aside from the "lime chemistry" during steaming, pine oil is displaced from the pulp and xanthate decomposed, which has a major effect upon the deadening of the copper and iron sulphides. Following steaming, the hot pulp is admitted to another conditioning tank wherein it is aerated, primarily for cooling, but incidentally for additional oxidation of the copper and iron sulphides. The resulting "deadened" pulp is then diluted to 20 pct solids, a specific collector for molybdenite, ordinary stove oil, is added and the separation of the molybdenite by flotation is undertaken at a pH of 8.5 to 8.8 in standard Miami air-flotation ma-chines. B-22 frother is used when necessary. A re-grind of the thickened rougher concentrates is made prior to the first cleaning operation chiefly for rejection of insoluble in subsequent flotation. The cleaner concentrate is then stepped up to 90 pct MoS, in an 8-cell Denver flotation machine No. 18. Sodium silicate is added to the cleaner circuit. Its effect is to flocculate molybdenite and stabilize the froth. In summary, it may be stated: 1. Separation of molybdenite into an acceptable product from sulphide copper concentrates by flotation involves preliminary preparation and conditioning of the pulp, which is of major importance. 2. This preparation and conditioning consists of several successive steps: (A) Thickening to 50 to 60 pct solids at controlled alkalinity to reduce volume of pulp and to contribute to depression of pyrite. (B) Agitation at high-pulp density for limited time with additional lime to provide for depression of pyrite. (C) Steaming at high-pulp density for decomposition of xanthate and xanthate surface films, evolution of pine oil, and oxidation of sulphide minerals other than molybdenite. The latter involves sulphating of lime with probable precipitation of calcium sulphate preferentially on copper and iron minerals. (D) Aeration at high-pulp density for cooling, and for further oxidation of copper and iron sulphide minerals. (E) Dilution of pulp to 20 pct solids and addition of specific collector for molybdenite, common stove oil. It is hardly necessary to point out that this rather drastic procedure for depression of previously activated copper and iron sulphide minerals, without at the same time depressing molybdenite, is possible due to the inherently high floatability and refractory nature of molybdenite. HE valuable mineral content of the current feed -*- to the Miami concentrator is as follows: copper, 0.7 pct total; molybdenum, 0.01. Flotation of this ore yields a sulphide concentrate containing: chalco- cite, 44 pct; molybdenite, 0.5; pyrite, 50.0; insol, 5.5. A combination of potassium ethyl xanthate and pentasol amyl xanthate as collectors, and pine oil as frother, are used in this flotation. Rejection of pyrite is encouraged by holding the amount of collectors used to the minimum consistent with copper recovery and by operating at high alkalinity (equivalent to 0.35-0.40 lb CaO per ton solution of pH 11.0). The molybdenum recovery in the sulphide concentrates under the above flotation conditions is approximately 50 pct of that originally present in the ore. Taking into account the acid soluble molybdenum, indicated molybdenite recovery is 75 to 80 pct. The attempt to separate the molybdenite into an acceptable molybdenum product begins with the bulk sulphide flotation concentrate just described. This concentrate is composed of chalcocite, whose floatability has been promoted to the fullest extent possible for the sake of its recovery from the ore, together with the pyrite which has been activated along with the copper mineral. The problem is to deaden the copper and iron minerals, and to float the molybdenite. Obviously in the accomplishment of this end, conditioning and preparation of the pulp, prior to flotation, plays an all important role. The first step is thickening to 50 to 60 pct solids, with milk of lime added to the thickener feed to maintain an alkalinity of the pulp equivalent to a pH of 8.5 to 8.8 during its residence in the thickener. The purpose of the thickening is primarily to reduce the volume of pulp for subsequent treatment. However, the relatively prolonged retention of the pulp in the thickener at the desired alkalinity is known to have a favorable depressing effect upon pyrite. There is a limit for this alkalinity above which a depressing effect upon molybdenite occurs. The thickened pulp (alkalinity: 0.015 lb CaO per ton, pH 8.8), discharges into an agitator, retention time approximately 2 hr, to which additional lime is added to raise the alkalinity to 0.35 to 0.40 lb CaO per ton solution, pH 11.6. This additional lime is required for pyrite depression and can be tolerated without loss of molybdenite because of the limited time of contact in the conditioner tank. The pulp leaving the lime conditioner passes through two successive steaming tanks, which are mechanically agitated, and into which live steam is admitted directly into the pulp near the bottom of the tanks. The temperature of the pulp is maintained as near boiling as possible. The steaming time is approximately 4 hr. The pulp leaving the last steamer has an alkalinity of about 0.04 lb Cao per ton solution, pH 8.7. It is believed that oxidation of the copper and iron sulphides occurs during steaming, the resulting sulphates reacting the calcium hydroxide to calcium sulphate and thus reducing the alkalinity. Since the steamer-feed solution is already saturated with calcium sulphate, the calcium sulphate produced during steaming is precipitated. It is believed that this calcium sulphate is precipitated preferentially on copper and iron mineral surfaces thus decreasing their floatability. Aside from the "lime chemistry" during steaming, pine oil is displaced from the pulp and xanthate decomposed, which has a major effect upon the deadening of the copper and iron sulphides. Following steaming, the hot pulp is admitted to another conditioning tank wherein it is aerated, primarily for cooling, but incidentally for additional oxidation of the copper and iron sulphides. The resulting "deadened" pulp is then diluted to 20 pct solids, a specific collector for molybdenite, ordinary stove oil, is added and the separation of the molybdenite by flotation is undertaken at a pH of 8.5 to 8.8 in standard Miami air-flotation ma-chines. B-22 frother is used when necessary. A re-grind of the thickened rougher concentrates is made prior to the first cleaning operation chiefly for rejection of insoluble in subsequent flotation. The cleaner concentrate is then stepped up to 90 pct MoS, in an 8-cell Denver flotation machine No. 18. Sodium silicate is added to the cleaner circuit. Its effect is to flocculate molybdenite and stabilize the froth. In summary, it may be stated: 1. Separation of molybdenite into an acceptable product from sulphide copper concentrates by flotation involves preliminary preparation and conditioning of the pulp, which is of major importance. 2. This preparation and conditioning consists of several successive steps: (A) Thickening to 50 to 60 pct solids at controlled alkalinity to reduce volume of pulp and to contribute to depression of pyrite. (B) Agitation at high-pulp density for limited time with additional lime to provide for depression of pyrite. (C) Steaming at high-pulp density for decomposition of xanthate and xanthate surface films, evolution of pine oil, and oxidation of sulphide minerals other than molybdenite. The latter involves sulphating of lime with probable precipitation of calcium sulphate preferentially on copper and iron minerals. (D) Aeration at high-pulp density for cooling, and for further oxidation of copper and iron sulphide minerals. (E) Dilution of pulp to 20 pct solids and addition of specific collector for molybdenite, common stove oil. It is hardly necessary to point out that this rather drastic procedure for depression of previously activated copper and iron sulphide minerals, without at the same time depressing molybdenite, is possible due to the inherently high floatability and refractory nature of molybdenite. However, molybdenite is susceptible to depression by excessive lime which must therefore be limited to the amount consistent with satisfactory molybdenite recovery. As part of a funded project we have completed a comparative literature survey of the US regional Proterozoic geology. For our com¬parative study model we used the geological settings of the very large pitchblende deposits in Saskatchewan, Canada and the Northern Terri¬tory of Australia. These occur in a variety of Archean and Lower Proterozoic host rocks, at and below a regional unconformity that is capped by subhorizontal Middle to Upper Proterozoic conti¬nental sedimentary rocks. We find that there have been recorded in some parts of the US similar unconformable sequences of Middle to Upper Proterozoic continental sedimentary rocks that overlie older basement rocks.

Technology for the preparation of densifiable sulfur concrete (sulfapave) materials has been devised by the Bureau of Mines. The materials are intended as new construction materials for use in corrosive areas where conventional materials fail. A series of modified sulfur cements were developed, which can be used in combination with dense-graded aggregates to prepare sulfapave materials with excellent corrosion-resistant properties. The materials can be mixed, laid, and compacted into place with conventional hot-mix asphalt pavi.ng equipment. Mixture designs utilizing 5-to 30-pct-modified sulfur cements and dense-graded aggregates gave material properties ranging from rigid to flexible. Laboratory corrosion tests in sulfuric acid showed no material loss or deterioration of physical properties over a 1-year test period in concentrations ranging from 0 to 60 pct at ambient temperatures. Preliminary results on field testing the materials for durability to weathering, corrosion, and traffic have been excellent, with no evidence of failure in the materials.

As the second largest phosphate resource in the world, Chinese phosphate ores generally grades with low of P2O5. The presentation of beneficiation test on the low grade of phosphate rock in this paper may be used for a reference for development and utilization of the similar reserves. The ore is a marine sedimentary phosphate rock containing low grade of P2O5 and high content of MgO and R2O3; The banded structure shows its suitability for heavy medium separation. The laboratory heavy liquid testing results indicate that as specific gravity of the heavy liquid is 2.85 g/cm3, a rougher concentrate assaying 28.71% P2O5 could be obtained while the rougher tailings contain only 4.47% P2O5. When the combined process with heavy liquid separation followed by direct & re-verse flotation is employed to treat the feed containing 21.15% P2O5, 3.79% MgO, 1.86% Fe2O3, 3.66% Al2O3, 23.75% A.I, and specific gravity of heavy liquid is 2.84 g/cm3, the optimum mesh of grind is 67.5% minus 200 mesh, a phosphate concentrate contained 32.51% P2O5, 0.48% MgO, 0.81% Fe2O3, 1.69% Al2O3 can be produced at a yield of 55.24%. The concentrate P2O5 recovery is 85% with which quality comply with the Class A specifications for production of phosphate fertilizer.
