Experimental work was conducted to determine the relationships of coal char conversion with temperature and heat absorption. The results show that at an earlier stage of the coke forming process, lump coal would absorb large amounts of heat but the increase of high temperature strength of lump coal was not significant. Contrarily, the lump coal’s high temperature strength was greatly improved at later stage of coke forming process. A number of residual coal was found in most tuyere coke samples illustrating that the lump coals added in the melter gasifier were not completely transformed into coke when they arrived at the tuyere region. The results indicate that the improvement of lump coal’s high temperature performance is limited in the melting gasifier by the low coke forming rate which could become the core factor of fines generation of lump coal in the melting gasifier.

The durability of SOFCs is one of the critical issues to realize the SOFC systems. In order to improve the durability, a precise degradation mechanism should be clarified at the different functional ceramic interfaces in SOFC cells and stacks. This paper reviews the improvement of SOFC durability by the mass transport analysis especially at cathode/interlayer/electrolyte interfaces. We have made a precise analysis on the reaction of cathode with impurities. Especially at the (La,Sr)(Co,Fe)O3/CeO2/ZrO2 interfaces, a significant amount of SrCrO4 and SrSO4 were observed at the (La,Sr)(Co,Fe)O3 surface as well as inside the (La,Sr)(Co,Fe)O3 cathode, which suggested some process occurred for both poisoning. Possible degradation mechanisms were proposed based on the observation data.

Um ensaio por partículas magnéticas é um método não destrutivo utilizado na detecção de descontinuidades superficiais e subsuperficiais em produtos laminados. Este método consiste em submeter a peça a um campo magnético, com aglomeração de partículas magnetizáveis nos pontos onde há descontinuidade. As partículas usadas podem ser de diferentes cores, dimensões e formas. A partícula fluorescente sob a luz ultravioleta demonstra melhor resultado para detecção de pequenas descontinuidades. Para ampliar o campo de visão ensaiado e realçar o contraste entre partícula e peça a radiação ultravioleta deve garantir uniformidade, intensidade e comprimento de onda adequado. Essas exigências motivaram o trabalho da Gerdau junto com a Metal Chek, representante da Spectroline, no desenvolvimento de uma solução inovadora. Na Linha de Inspeção de Tarugos da Gerdau Ouro Branco o uso de luminárias ultravioletas de LED - Light Emitting Diode tornou-se uma alternativa que proporcionou ganho em eficiência e em confiabilidade na tomada de decisão do inspetor de qualidade, baixo consumo de energia, custo de manutenção e satisfação dos clientes. A implantação das luminárias de LED refletiu na prática a evolução da qualidade do produto, além de melhores condições em meio ambiente, saúde e segurança para o inspetor.

The origin and elimination of 3rd octave mill chatter is a frequently investigated topic since tandem cold mills are in operation. So far only chatter monitoring systems have been successfully deployed, but this implies speed reductions and therefore a significant loss in mill output. Primetals Technologies has developed a new system using active injection of damping in order to eliminate 3rd octave mill chatter. The new hydraulics-based ChatterBlock® Control has now been proven successfully in mill operation. 3rd octave mill chatter, typically occurring in a frequency range between 90 and 150Hz, is a self-excited vibration phenomena typically occurring in the rear stands of tandem cold mills. It can produce significant gauge variations and even cause strip breaks. 3rd octave mill chatter is characterized by a quickly diverging vertical vibration of the rolls for specific rolling conditions (material, mill speed, forces, gauge etc.). Its occurrence requires immediate speed reduction of the mill in order to avoid strip breakage and/or strip quality degradation. This phenomenon thus severely limits mill productivity. The first step to proof the industrial feasibility of the new system was its installation on stand no. 4 of a 5-stand tandem mill. The development process and first results of the industrial implementation will be presented in this paper.

The optimization and improvement of a modern integral iron and steel works gets more and more difficult as each individual plant is already operated at its best efficiency and at the lowest operational expenditures. However very often the individual plants are considered as stand-alone units and there are losses and inconsistencies on interfaces and take over points, which could be avoided and by that improving the overall performance of the iron and steel works as a holistic unit. Primetals Technologies looked into this subject extensively in the recent years and is now ready to offer new tools and services in order to assist operators to find further potential for improvement in processes, which seem to be fully developed at first sight.

Inúmeras indústrias necessitam de sistemas de tratamento de água que favoreçam o processo de descarte de seus efluentes, além do aproveitamento do reuso de água. A mineração e siderurgia podem apresentar rejeitos com metais, que necessitam de tratamentos econômicos e sustentáveis. A biossorção é um exemplo de técnica que vem ganhando interesse em diversas áreas da pesquisa. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a porcentagem de remoção de íons de níquel de uma solução monoelementar de cloreto de níquel II (NiCl2+) em pH 2, 4 e 6. Para isso, utilizou-se um sistema de batelada, e 1g de consórcio bacteriano liofilizado (sem ser autoclavado) isolado de amostra de terra. Os resultados indicaram que a eficiência da biossorção foi maior para o pH 6, e que o consórcio bacteriano foi eficiente na remoção de íons de Ni2+.

Tailings storage facilities are geotechnically complicated structures that develop heterogeneous strength profiles and varied porewater conditions. The monitoring of porewater pressures is one of the only direct measurements that can be performed to monitor the performance of a facility throughout its life and is of particular importance in upstream facilities. Foundation underdrainage, continuous and staged tailings deposition, climate inputs (rain, snow, humidity, evaporation, etc), and stratified tailings permeabilities can complicate this critical measurement that introduces uncertainty to stability analyses. These difficult conditions manifest in vibrating wire piezometer measurements as very low or negative pressure readings, both of which are within the instrument’s range of accuracy. However, the data can be difficult to interpret, and a range of interpretations are adopted from optimistic low phreatic surfaces to conservative fully saturated tailings. Where tailings are potentially liquefiable, these very low readings introduce further uncertainty regarding the pore space saturation ratio and liquefaction potential above the estimated phreatic surface. This area of uncertainty is the vadose zone, and its affect on tailings behaviour is not well understood. The two facilities analysed in this paper are upstream, raised embankments with tailings classified as clayey, sandy silt that have been found to be potentially liquefiable. The vibrating wire piezometers (VWP) at both sites show very low or negative readings when they are initially installed near the surface and then go through cycles of re-saturation and de-saturation. Eventually the readings settle as the VWPs are buried deeper within the tailings. The instrumented sections within the tailings column do not show consistent readings that would be indicative of a hydrostatic phreatic surface at either site. Rather, they are highly variable and can be interpreted as either representing a high phreatic surface within the tailings or as a ‘perched’ phreatic zone within the tailings layers. How the VWP data is interpreted has a significant impact on how the facilities are raised and operated. The design outcome for Site 1, which adopts a lower phreatic surface, results in an embankment that meets factor of safety (FoS) requirements under residual strength conditions without any buttressing. Conversely, a conservative (high) phreatic surface has been adopted for Site 2 and has resulted in the facility requiring a significant buttress to meet FoS under residual strength conditions.

In the pyrometallurgical process of secondary lead recycling, a desulfurising agent, such as Na2CO3 is added to minimise the emissions of sulfur into the atmosphere, while silica is introduced into the smelter as a fluxing material. Subsequently, a significant amount of Na2O and SiO2 remains in the downstream reverberatory furnace and blast furnace slags. However, there is limited understanding of the thermodynamic behaviour of silicate-based lead slags rich in Na2O, posing challenges in accurately determining the optimal condition for targeted metal recovery and final slag composition. In this work, the equilibrium phase relations of the PbO-Na2O-SiO2 system in the primary phase field of Na2SiO3 are studied from 800 to 1000°C via equilibration-quenching method. Samples with different compositions were prepared and held in platinum capsules in air at these temperatures to reach equilibrium. The equilibrated samples were subsequently quenched and the phase compositions were measured by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The results were then compared to those of previous studies and any discrepancies were resolved.

Dry milling circuits that include high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) or vertical roller mills (VRM) and air classification have replaced dry ball milling in cement production, but how do they compare to wet milling and classification circuits in mineral processing plants? Two case studies are presented that compare the energy efficiency, wear, liberation and capital cost of dry and wet milling circuits. In both case studies the VRM and HPGR consume half the energy of a wet tumbling mill for the same duty. However, the dry classification system tends to significantly erode the energy benefits. A number of improvement opportunities are presented that have the potential to improve the energy and capital efficiency of dry milling circuits. These improvement opportunities focus on the dry classification system that consumes significant energy in heating and fan power requirements and requires a large proportion of the footprint.

"Thanks in great part to the geology of the New York City Metropolitan area, mini-caissons are a popular choice for deep foundations. These drilled elements are readily available, easy to install with minimal impact on adjacent structures, and can be designed with large compressive and tensile capacities. Despite the frequency with which they are employed, the engineering design community is divided over several of the underlying principles governing the design of mini-caissons. This paper seeks to draw attention to several of these issues in an effort to encourage further research and discussion, namely: (1) how the allowable stresses have changed for the NYC Building Code over time, (2) the inconsistent load transfer mechanisms considered for geotechnical capacity, and (3) the role of the permanent steel casing towards structural capacities of mini-caissons.INTRODUCTIONIn the local construction nomenclature, mini-caissons are drilled deep foundation elements which derive their capacity from a socket in rock. A permanent steel casing (commonly between 7- and 24-inches in diameter) aides the drilling through overburden soils to the top of bedrock. Afterwards, an uncased rock socket is drilled into the bedrock and the inside of the casing and rock socket is inspected by means of portable video equipment. After inspection, the interior of the socket and casing is filled with steel reinforcement and concrete or grout. The casing-soil interface is generally ignored for axial design purposes and the full geotechnical compressive or tensile capacity is assumed to be generated in the rock socket. Figure 1 shows a typical mini-caisson cross section.Mini-caissons have been used for decades in the New York City area for a number of reasons. They have historically been proven to develop high axial capacities in the city’s metamorphic rock (Tamaro et. al. 2000), often exceeding 300- to 500-tons. Additionally, their method of installation (drilling) is generally able to bypass layers of dense Glacial Till, boulders, and manmade fill which would interfere with the installation of other pile types (e.g. driven piles, auger cast piles). Further they are able to extend to depths exceeding 50-ft to reach bedrock underlying a site, making them a useful tool in areas where rock is relatively deep or varied in elevation. Drilled casing installation also results in fewer vibrations and disturbances to adjacent structures and can occur in areas of restricted access (a constant concern for any project in a dense urban environment such as NYC)."

The Jiboia heavy mineral sands deposit is a new discovery associated with the São Francisco River delta on the northern coast of Sergipe state. The identified resources are part of the much larger mineralized trend. Mineralization is hosted in paleodunes deposited on Holocene marine terraces (Fig. 1). The dunes are up to 30 m above sea level, and mineralization occur from 6 m above sea level upward. The main ore minerals constitute pseudorutile, ilmenite, zircon, rutile and monazite. This work presents a thorough characterization of the mineralogy and granulometric distribution of the Jiboia orebody.

During recent years, the integrity testing of piles has made considerable progress. With the availability of portable and powerful computers, practically all integrity testing equipment is now digital. Using sophisticated software for data acquisition and analysis, today's testing systems can provide owners with important information regarding both the length and integrity of piles and drilled shafts. This sophistication carries a price: Very few clients, including experienced engineers, do understand the strange-looking graphs adorning the reports they get. In fact, most of them will never ask, some because they are too busy to care and others because they are ashamed to show their ignorance. This situation is well exploited by a few shrewd operators of test equipment. Facing strong competition and falling revenues, they simplify their task and cut their expenses by the following means: 1. Using old equipment until it falls apart, and then some, 2. Hiring under-qualified personnel, 3. Staying on site as little as possible, 4. Eliminating the analysis and evaluation stage altogether, 5. Confirming as-made lengths and reporting no defects.

Resolution Copper Mining is sinking a 6943 foot (2116 m) deep shaft to access and develop a new panel caving mine with approximately 1.6 billion known tons of porphyry copper resource. This mine will take several years to ramp up to its full production level of 132,300 tons per day (120,000 tonnes per day) and is scheduled to begin production in the early 2020s. Resolution's shaft sinking contractor Cementation USA is using state of the art sinking methods combined with a largely local labor force to complete this record breaking shaft. Resolution's No. 10 Shaft has finished diameter of 28 feet (8.5m) and as of October 2013 is at the 6625 foot (2020 m) level. Upon completion in early 2014, the No. 10 Shaft will be the deepest single lift shaft in the United States.

The mining industry is faced with a pressing problem; that is, to develop more efficient methods of extraction, handling and upgrading-techniques that will do the job faster and better than ever before. New techniques require new machines, or applications of new and improved materials that can be used to modify and improve existing machine and equipment designs. The traditional approach has been to increase productivity by increasing equipment size. Prognostication indicates that the trend toward larger equipment sizes and capacities will continue as one answer to the challenge imposed by future increases in mineral demands. But what is the limit on the continued growth of equipment size? Until about 1930, there was a very definite limit-a limit imposed by the strength of the steels and the power plants then available. The equipment engineer had come to an impasse: even though it was easily possible, for instance, to triple the size of a bucket, it had become impractical to correspondingly enlarge the boom, the counterweight, and the power plant.

(communication to the Secretary): When Mr. Stetefeldt quotes me as saying that " silver-assays are uniformly made by scorification," he has evidently not understood that I was referring solely to the practice of silver-lead smelting-works. Everybody knows that silver-mills do not employ the scorification-assay for regular work ; and it is equally certain that in very few, if any, silver-lead smelting-works will the crucible-assay be found in use for determining silver. The second part of the quotation, "as it is adapted to all kinds of ores and gives excellent results unless organic matter is present," although, of course, also intended in a restricted sense, might very well be extended to a general one. Mr. Furman, in his Manual of Practical Assaying,* says, on page 123: "We believe that the Colorado practice is preferable, as most ores will yield higher silver-results by scorification." The fact that the scorification-assay is the accepted one in Colorado is strong presumptive evidence for its accuracy, as exactness would nowhere else be more jealously demanded. Mr. Stetefeldt cites Albert Arents- as a supporter of his preference for the crucible-assay, although I had already done so in favor of scorification. Looking up again the reference, I find that I was justified in quoting him, as, while Mr. Arents advocates the crucibleassay for low-grade gold ores, not on account of the greater accuracy of its results, but because it is quicker and less expensive, he condemns it§ for the assay of silver-ores, and prefers the scorifier for rich goldores, and for coppery ores, and in general for ores containing both silver and gold. Throughout time, the mining industry has been very successful in meeting the world's requirements for metals and materials while meeting the challenges of decreasing ore grades and increased emphasis on protection of the environment. This success has been due to the development and implementation of new technologies. A clear example of such a development over the past 25 years is the increasing use of leaching/solvent extraction/electrowinning for the recovery of copper from oxide and sulfide ores. The key to the successful introduction of this technology was the discovery and development of the hydroxyoxime liquid ion exchange reagents by General Mills Chemicals (now Henkel Corporation). An important role was also played by the close working relationships between General Mills Chemicals and Ranchers Exploration which resulted in startup of the first plant in 1968 and between General Mills Chemicals and Bagdad Copper which resulted in the startup of the second copper SX-EW plant in August of 1970. Following on the heels of the hydroxyoxime development came the commercialization of other new chelating reagents based on different chemical functionalities, i.e., beta-diketones, alkylated 8- hydroxyquinolines and sulfonamidoquinolines. This initial spurt of activity was then followed by a slowing of development in terms of new reagent functionalities. Activity has continued in terms of further optimization/improvement of existing reagent functionalities but the commercialization of new reagent functionalities has slackened. This observation reflects the fact that the development of new reagent functionalities for metal recovery has become increasingly more expensive such that the right combination of price and sales volume must exist in order to justify the investment required to bring a new reagent to the market place. Given the dependence of the mining industry on innovation to meet the needs of the future, one can ask how these new developments, particularly in new reagents, will occur. The authors are to be complimented on their timely study of solution-hardening effects in a bcc metal. Unfortunately there are some misleading aspects of the paper that should be discussed and clarified which is the purpose of this letter. In particular the writer is concerned about the allusions to rate theory of deformation that are inferred by the authors. This position is taken on the basis first of the "weaker" temperature dependence of the yield and flow stresses of the alloy relative to pure niobium and second of the strong temperature dependence of the Young's modulus of elasticity. It is by now well-recognized that any collection of data points used to determine a flow-stress temperature-dependence relationship must be established under isostructural conditions, i.e., similar or identical sessile and mobile dislocation densities and arrangements. Admittedly this is a formidable experimental undertaking and not what would be expected in an exploratory investigation of the present kind. As an alternative to the former one can consider, however, the temperature dependence of flow stresses at comparable strains. In the present study the authors have elected to use the lower yield stress and ultimate strengths to exhibit the temperature dependence of their alloys except for the data points taken at liquid nitrogen temperature. Here they have used the proportional limit for the yield stress and the fracture stress for the ultimate strength. This seems to be an unrealistic choice particularly in view of the fact that this temperature is below the duc tile-brittle transition region for the alloy and no supporting data points were obtained between -55" and -196°C. If the authors' data in Fig. 2 are extrapolated and data points selected at a constant strain, for example a strain of 0.01, the reader can quickly verify that a temperature dependence exactly paralleling that of pure niobium is obtained.
