This paper demonstrates use of remotely sensed imagery in promoting sustainable mining. Remote sensing technology can be used during all phases of a mining project û from evaluating the resource, to making extraction more cost-effective, through to monitoring, mine closure and remediation. Use of the new generation of satellite platforms with the capability of acquiring satellite data with higher spectral and spatial resolution have the capability to emerge as essential indicator for sustainable development in the minerals industry. A life cycle approach to satellite imagery is discussed. The use of an imagery of the site prior to mining activity establishes the environmental baseline, guides mitigation measures and eventual help in suggesting remediation. Remote imagery provides the cost-effective means of monitoring reclamation, including the growth of planted vegetation, of the mine site and surrounding area. The latest advancements in satellite remote sensing are highlighted to meet the newer challenges of sustainable mining practices. Some of the worldwide successful remote sensing applications for the measurement and evaluation of the sustainable development impact of mining operations are described. Presently available source of imagery and its comparative advantages and disadvantages are provided as a guide. Finally, the limitations of this tool are indicated.

"The influence of crystallographic orientation on the pitting corrosion behavior of Ni-Fe-Cr alloy 028 was studied by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), potentiodynamic polarization technique and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results show that there is anisotropy of pitting corrosion that strongly depends on crystallographic orientation of surface planes. The distribution of pits frequency in standard stereographic triangle shows that the crystallographic planes close to {100} are more prone to pitting corrosion compared to planes of {110} and {111}. The calculation of surface energy (001) and (111) shows that the planes of high packing density of atoms have low surface energy with concomitant strong resistance to pitting corrosion. A correlation function between crystallographic orientation and pitting corrosion susceptibility suggests a method not only to predict the pitting resistance of a known textured materials, but also to improve corrosion resistance by controlling materials texture.INTRODUCTIONNickel-iron-chromium(Ni-Fe-Cr) alloys are widely used in various industries and engineering sectors due to their combination of good mechanical properties and high corrosion resistance(Hibner, 2001; Thomas, 2006; Ghosh, 2005).Ni-Fe-Cr alloy 028 (alloy 028)has such important characteristics worth mentioning. Alloy 028 contains high amounts of nickel, copper and molybdenum which improve its resistant to corrosion attack in reducing medium, and presence of high level of chromium makes it more resistant to oxidizing species. Moreover, alloy 028 is less expensive because of higher amount of iron compared to other similar alloys. Currently, alloy 028 is manufactured as evaporator tubes applied in the phosphoric acid production; production tubing and casing used in deep and sour gas wells; heat exchangers employed in nuclear power plants, and seawater-carrying piping and seawater-cooled heat exchangers (Bankiewicz, 2012; Kivisäkk, 2003; Gómez, 2003; Xian, 2012; Bellezze, 2004)"

Industrial smelting furnaces are subjected to significant structural changes and deterioration caused by the conditions under which they operate. The current methods for the structural assessment of furnaces include visual inspections, analysis of thermal data, acousto ultrasonic-echo (AU-E) of the refractory lining and surveying of the key structural elements. Acoustic Emission (AE) non-destructive testing (NDT) technique has proven its capabilities for continuous monitoring of industrial installations and structures. Recently, Hatch Ltd. has been successful in applying acoustic emission for monitoring furnace tapblocks, and expanding the scope of the acoustic emission monitoring to the structural integrity of the entire furnace. The capability of detecting emissions related to the fracture development in the furnace shell, movement of the refractory, electrode arcing, combined with efficient source location algorithms makes an acoustic emission system a comprehensive tool for the real-time furnace integrity monitoring. In this paper the concept of such state of the art system for structural integrity assessment is presented. The initial results of the acoustic emission monitoring together with data analysis techniques are discussed.

This report contains a cost estimate of the Bureau of Mines process for dewatering Alaskan placer effluent streams with polyethylene oxide (PEO). In this process effluent slurry is withdrawn from the placer plant pond system after a primary settling stage. A dilute PEO solution is injected into the slurry line to flocculate the fine, suspended solids. The flocculated solids are dewatered on a stationary screen. Clarified water is returned to the placer operation or discharged, while the 35 percent solids waste is pumped back into the mine cut. Cost estimates are presented for dewatering plants processing 1,000 gallons per minute of effluent slurry at three representative turbidity levels. Both the placer and the dewatering plants operate on the same 1-shift-per-day, 6-day-per-week schedule for the 100-day Alaskan operating season. Estimated fixed capital costs for these plants processing placer with effluent turbidities of 1,000, 3,000, and 5,000 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) are approximately $29,000, $31,000, and $34,000, respectively, on a fourth quarter 1986 basis. Operating costs are estimated to be $0.34, $0.37, and $0.40 per thousand gallons of effluent slurry.

The Chino mine is an open pit copper mine located in southwestern New Mexico, at an elevation of 1890 m (6200 feet) above sea level, approximately 117 km (70 miles) north of the Mexican border. It is owned by Chino Mines Co., a Phelps Dodge Corporation-Mitsubishi Minerals partnership, and is operated by Phelps Dodge Corporation. As part of an effort to maximize production and minimize costs, a computerized truck dispatching system was approved for purchase and installation at the Chino mine in March. 1984. Modular Mining Systems, Inc. was commissioned to install their system, trade named DISPATCH. The system installation was completed and operation began in July, 1985. Installation and operation of the system has presented some interesting challenges and problems, which have been overcome, resulting in increased productivity for the haulage truck and shovel fleets.

"In the mining industry time is critical as production depends on the speed of the mining cycle. During the mining process, the time required to re-open access for the next phase of an underground heading is a key point that strongly depends on the ability of the selected ground support technique to promptly ensure the safety of workers. Fiber reinforced dry-mix shotcrete has been proven to be an efficient and well adapted technique, able to produce a ground support material with the required energy absorption or flexural toughness in a single application phase. In this context, this paper demonstrates the possibility of significantly speeding up the mining process by using a new fiber reinforced dry-mix shotcrete. The new fiber reinforced dry-mix shotcrete is capable of developing flexural toughness in only 24 hours that is equivalent to what is typically achieved after 28 days using current fiber reinforced drymix shotcrete technology.INTRODUCTIONShotcrete is often used for ground support when using the drill and blast method or other tunnelling methods. But before re-opening access for the next phase of the underground heading, the applied shotcrete is required to reach a minimum compressive strength and in case of fiber reinforced shotcrete, a minimum flexural toughness (energy absorption) in order to ensure the safety of the workers going into the heading. Combined with bolts, the use of conventional fiber reinforced shotcrete becomes an interesting method for ground support as it is applied very soon after excavation and works to stabilize ground movements (Bernard E. S., 2009). In this case, the toughness development of fiber reinforced shotcrete becomes an important feature of the material when looking to speedup the mining cycle. However, early re-entry criteria in underground openings are difficult to ascertain as the load carrying capacity of fiber reinforced shotcrete is usually assessed after 7 or 28 days. For this reason, re-entry criteria varies from one mining area to another and are usually based on compressive strength requirements. For example, in northern Ontario, Canada, one of the current practices in the mining industry consists of allowing safe re-entry once fiber reinforced shotcrete has developed a compressive strength of higher than 4 MPa (Dufour, O’Donnell, & Ballou, 2003). Flexural toughness requirements on fiber reinforced shotcrete are also typically based on evaluation after 28 days."

Can international development NGOs and the mining industry find common ground and work together in the Third World? The Canadian Hunger Foundation/PARTNERS in Rural Development (CHF-PARTNERS) has, over the past forty years, implemented more than 800 rural community development projects in some 38 countries of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Working with or for the Canadian mining industry offers both opportunities and risks. We can help a mining company ensure that the workers, their families and communities share adequately in the economic and social rewards from a mining operation in their area. We can contribute to the provision of sustainable livelihoods when an operation winds down. The company?s reputation as a good corporate citizen can be enhanced. On the other hand, mining companies and NGOs have generally very different values and missions. The risk of misunderstandings from conflicting motives and work practices is correspondingly high. Both partners must state their values and expectations clearly at the start of collaboration. The NGO must ensure that the company abides by acceptable ethical standards. It must not directly or indirectly subsidize a private company from its charitable donations. The mining company must satisfy itself that the NGO has the capacity, resources and experience to produce the results expected.

The Callie Underground Gold Mine (Callie) is owned by Newmont Asia Pacific and located 531 km north-west of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Historically, stopes have been mined utilising a primary and secondary stoping sequence with cemented aggregate fill and rock fill respectively. Current and near-future mining will employ long hole open stoping with rib pillars and rock fill with a paste fill system approved to allow a higher extraction ratio from mid-2011. The Callie rock mass is of good quality with little or no mining difficulties during development and stoping to a depth of 1140 m below surface. Development is currently occurring at depth of 1360 m below surface. Stress damage previously observed only in secondary stope accesses is now observed in development unaffected by stoping stresses. A change in rock mass properties is being experienced with depth, with more pronounced and frequent joint planes. Also, other structures are intersected more commonly, such as lithological boundaries and fault zones. The 'Callie rock factory' mentality that has persisted for years is challenged. This paper covers an appraisal of the stress and ground condition changes at Callie. The appraisal outlines the mine design criterion that was developed and examines the transition from a low stress environment to one where stress damage is observed. Discussion includes a judgement on the rock mass damage observed in development, the dominant geotechnical factors influencing the change in ground conditions, and if a correlation can be made between the observed rock mass damage with stress through the use of numerical modelling.

Constructing tunnels underground is generally described as a high-risk activity because conditions in the surrounding area tend to be unpredictable. This would and can create unique dangers in every situation. It is important to gain a deep understanding of the risks associated with tunneling in order to reduce the likelihood of their occurrence and severity of their consequences should they occur. For this to be achieved, different risks should first be evaluated and ranked according to their relative importance and criticality. The Amir Kabir tunnel is considered one of the most dangerous tunnels in Tehran, Iran, in terms of the risks involved in its excavation and their potential consequences. In particular, part T4 of the tunnel passes through a zone of different strata and also a compound of various soils. This paper studies part T4 of the Amir Kabir tunnel from a risk analysis and risk management point of view. In doing so, factors increasing total cost, causing delay in the project completion time, decreasing the operation rate and downgrading project quality were identified and ranked according to their importance using the aggregate primary index risk method. For this purpose, a comprehensive questionnaire was designed and completed by tunneling experts. By responding to the questionnaires, the experts determined the relative likelihood of occurrence of the studied factors and their potential consequences. As a result, the experts suggested several alternatives to reduce the risks involved in this particular study. Moreover, the experts completed new questionnaires whilst taking into account different alternatives. In the next step, the risks before and after applying the alternatives were compared. As a result of performing the said analyses, it was concluded first that the aggregate primary index risk is an effective tool in identifying the risks involved in such projects. Second, it was concluded that, by taking into account different alternatives when analyzing and ranking the risks, severity of the said risks can potentially be reduced. Also, by considering such matters when analyzing tunneling risks, the projects? efficiency can greatly increase as a result of reducing risks that threaten financial and human resources. The approach introduced in this paper, together with the methodology described, can be adopted by the mining design engineer in all similar situations. They will be of particular advantage in such methods as room and pillar mining, where the number of similar tunnels required is high.

For the past several years, inflation has placed increasing pressure on our economic system. The total effect of inflation is complex when combined with other factors which affect the economics of equipment. A mathematical model is described herein which can be programmed on a computer to determine the effect of inflation on economic life and profits after taxes. The computer output results in graphic plots which clearly show the relation of various percentages of inflation to life and profits. Inflation has become a common topic of conversation in the recent past. What is it and how can it be measured? What effect does increased inflation have on equipment policy? Research now in progress at the Construction Institute at Stanford University is beginning to unravel some of the mystery of inflation. As a start, let us answer the first question by defining the word inflation. The dictionary says that inflation is "an increase in the volume of money and credit relative to available goods resulting in a substantial and continuing rise in the general price level. It appears, in fact, that we are in an inflationary spiral which is "a continuous rise in prices that is sustained by the tendency of wage increases and cost increases to act on each other." 3 Inflation behaves just like compound interest. It takes more dollars of future years to buy an equal amount of a given commodity, be it a material or a service. Let us assume an annual inflation rate of 5 percent. Improving the understanding of the processes governing ground movements in and around brown coal open cuts is of significant interest for both operating stability and rehabilitation. Brown coal, lignite, is a low-rank coal that is best described as a soft rock, with geotechnical characteristics that derive from its organic origin. It is well-known that low-rank coals exhibit creep behaviour; however, little has been reported on the impacts of chemical processes on brown coal creep behaviour even though organic substances are susceptible to chemical alterations and mining processes will contribute to changes to the geochemical environment; around most mines, groundwater flow patterns are altered leading to enhanced surface water infiltration. Here we study the deformation behaviour of brown coal in response to ion exchange reaction. Our experimental results show that for different ion exchange conditions different characteristics of secondary compression are observed. With the addition of Ca2+, the ratio between coefficients of secondary and primary compression (Ca /Cc) initially decreased, presenting a minimum value at the concentration of 0.005?M, then increased significantly. This implies the importance of ion exchange process for the long-term deformation of brown coal. On the other hand, increasing Na+ concentration did not affect Ca /Cc values significantly over all tested concentrations. The suppression of diffuse double layer was still observed for Na+-treated samples as increasing Na+ concentration decreases Ca values. Introduction The Wakefield plant of the Aluminum Company of Canada, Limited - a member of the Aluminum, Limited, group of companies - produces magnesia, magnesia fertilizer ingredient, and hydrated lime, from brucitic limestone. Wakefield is on the Gatineau river in Wakefield township, Quebec, some 22 miles north of Ottawa. The plant is near the western bank of the river adjacent to the Ottawa-Maniwaki highway and branch line of the Canadian Pacific railway. The plant is unique in the sense that it is the only place in Canada where brucite is processed. It is also distinguished for its outstanding safety record, as not a single lost-time accident occurred during either 1948 or 1949. The plant is amply provided with safety and comfort provisions in keeping with the standard practice in all of the twelve plants operated in Canada by Alcan and its associated companies. History Following the identification of brucite in the Rutherglen and Bryson districts in Ontario, occurrences of the mineral were discovered in the Wakefield area, Quebec, in 1939. After exploratory work on these deposits and investigation by the Bureau of Mines, Ottawa, on a method of extracting the brucite from the ore, a plant for treating the ore from the Maxwell property was built in 1941 by the Aluminum Company of Canada and commenced operations in early 1942. The process used is more or less in accordance with the method worked out by Mr. M. F. Goudge of the Bureau of Mines.

This investigation studied the inflight calcination kinetics of nuclear waste simulant using a thermal plasma reactor. A series of experiments were performed to determine the conversion of insoluble aluminum compounds to the soluble compounds and the decomposition of complex organic and nitrite compounds present in the simulant waste. Thermodynamic calculations based on free energy minimization were performed to establish a theoretical basis for this investigation. A kinetic model to describe the conversion of gibsite to sodium aluminate has been proposed. The products of the calcination were characterized using XRD, Gas Chromatography, and chemical analysis by ICP. The results of this investigation indicated 85% gibsite conversion to sodium aluminate, 90% of nitrate decomposition, 52% TOC decomposition and 90% conversion of chromium to soluble compounds. The largest surface coal mine in North America requires complex materials handling infrastructure to fulfil the highly variable quality specifications of its contracts. These diverse demands, reflected in the arrival of numerous customer trains every day, necessitate the integration of information in every stage of production. To meet this goal, quality measurement, train line-up and mine planning processes are being integrated into local and remote control rooms. The effectiveness of such a system can only be measured by comparing decisions that are made with, and without, each of the individual integrated control systems. Traditionally, mine controllers use their experience, intuition or a variety of trial-and-error spreadsheets to determine the ideal materials handling flows needed to achieve the correct quality. These balanced decisions are complex since many factors must be considered such as the mine plan, fleet costs, quality variability and others; consequently mine controllers usually have widely varying success between crews.An evaluation model was developed to assess the impact of a decision support system (DSS) integrated in a control room for controlling the coal blending process. To this end, an ARENA-based simulator representing the whole production process can be used to pull performance and current materials handling settings directly either from the real-time systems in the mine, or from historical data. In this way, the same shift (breakdowns, cycle rates, etc) can be simulated and performance compared. Different settings of the DSS, in terms of what information is displayed and the methods for doing so, can be tested for effectiveness. The historical data are extracted directly from a corporate data warehouse, without altering the everyday working databases. At the same time, the simulator writes its results back into the same data warehouse structure, allowing the same KPI reports to be used to measure simulated shifts.

In view of the state of the long time use of sodium cyanide in lead-zinc-sulfur-silver multimetallic ore production, we propose alternative reagents system through experimental research. The experiment first used TJ, sodium sulfide to adjust the flotation pulp, after that, zinc sulfate, sodium sulfite was added to low alkaline pulp to inhibiting zinc sulfur mineral and adapted MB, 25# aerofloat and diethyl dithiocarbamate combination collectors to float lead minerals. The obtained test index is as follows: lead concentrate recovery rate of small scale test was increased by 5 to 10%, the recovery rates of gold and silver in lead concentrate were increased by 7% and 11% respectively; the industrial test is conducted under the condition that the total grade of lead and zinc content in raw ore decreased by 4.81%, the total recovery rate of lead and zinc increased by 7%, recovery rates of gold and silver in lead concentrate were increased by 7.62% and 9.65% respectively. So it successfully realizes the target to replace the sodium cyanide, using low-alkaline non-toxic reagents system in mineral processing practice of three kinds of complex lead-zinc-sulfur ore of this mine. "Gold has been found in many parts of the Bridge River district of British Columbia; but it is from a relatively small area in the valley of Cadwallader creek that most production has come. The ore-bearing area measures 1/2 mile in width by 3 miles in length; and for convenience it is called the Cadwallader gold belt in this paper. In this belt are found the Bralorne and Pioneer mines and in addition several prospects under development.The gold of the Cadwallader gold belt occurs in quartz veins averaging about 3 feet in width and containing about ½ oz. of gold a ton. Except for a relatively small amount of silver, no other metals are produced from these veins. The ore-bearing veins occur in a variety of rocks. They occupy reverse faults and tension fractures belonging to a distinctive fracture system. Some of these structures are ore-bearing over lengths exceeding 5,000 feet and depths exceeding 3,700 feet. The production of the Bralorne mine (1932-1945) is 996,383 oz. gold and 190,709 oz. silver; that of the Pioneer mine (1930-1945) is 777,588 oz. gold and 135,698 oz. silver. These two mines have together distributed about $25,000,000 in dividends.The Bridge River district first attracted attention in 1863* when prospectors were attracted by its small but rich placer gold deposits. Most of the important lode deposits of the Cadwallader gold belt were discovered in 1897 (11). Many years of desultory development followed and it was not until 1928 and 1932 that the Pioneer and Bralorne mines, respectivdy, entered into profitable production."

The Coteau Properties Company's Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mining operation located near Beulah, North Dakota. As part of the mining process, Coteau removes and replaces thin layers of suitable plant growth material (SPGM) generally ranging in thickness between one and five feet. Historically, tractor-scrapers completed this work; however, rising tractor-scraper costs and increasing haulage distances sent Coteau in search of a lower cost method resulting in the acquisition of a backhoe/truck fleet in 1995.

During the 1990s, wider and more productive longwall panels were being introduced into the Newcastle Coalfield. The strata of the Newcastle Coalfield incorporate numerous massive sandstones and conglomerates, some of which formed the immediate roof of the coal seams being mined. The unexpected implications of introducing wider panels into this geological environment included more variable and increased subsidence, severe periodic weighting (with associated mid-face falls) as well as windblast.Subsidence prediction at the time was based on empirically derived data essentially relating subsidence to the width/depth ratio of the panel without accounting for actual widths, nor the impacts of variable geology. This approach required modification as locally derived data was gathered and reinterpreted.The interaction of massive strata located close to the roof of the mined seam resulted in dramatic implications for some of the operations. When associated with longwall goaf geomechanics severe periodic weighting events and crippling mid-face roof falls were the consequence. When associated with narrower panels and shortwall goaf geomechanics, mines in the region experienced aggressive windblast events. The relationships between the overlying massive strata, longwall panel geometry and the various risks encountered during this period is in the author’s opinion, the most concise still documented.As the extensive coalfields of Queensland turn to underground mining operations the relevance of these experiences cannot be underestimated. This paper will discuss recent developments as well as incorporating diverse subjects such as microseismic monitoring, low frequency radio emissions and ‘electrophonics’ as they relate also to the topic.Like Moriarty, massive strata can be disguised and can offend when you least expect. This paper documents a trail of crimes committed by conglomerate in the Newcastle Coalfield that were inflicted on the general public, miners and mining equipment. Although this paper concentrates on the criminal behaviour of conglomerate, this story is also relevant to other massive units such as coarse sandstones that may be more difficult to identify and apprehend. Currently Moriarty remains at large and able to reoffend at any time, once again taking advantage of the unwary.CITATION:Creech, M, 2014.
