This study gives an analysis of the copper system byproducts and discusses the identification and classification of byproduct metals and their supply systems. Arsenic, platinum-group metals, silver, gold, selenium, tellurium, molybdenum, rhenium, uranium, aluminum, magnesium, and byproduct copper, lead, and zinc from complex ores are covered. The report describes several metallurgical systems, the marginal and incremental products costs of byproduct subsystems, industry structure and organization, and the historical data on price, consumption, and supply. Supply curves are presented for about one-half of the byproduct metals studied. The study develops a conceptual framework for analysis by reviewing the present concepts of byproduct supply and the related price theory. It gives the sources of supply of the individual byproduct metals to indicate the importance of the byproduct supply to the total supply. Mills, smelters, and refineries processing byproduct materials for their metal content are identified by geographic location and company ownership, The study also includes information on the reserves-resource base supporting byproduct output, reserve estimates, and the demand aspects of each byproduct metal.

This report presents recommended guidelines and regulatory changes applicable to electrical installations in underground oil shale mines. These recommendations are based on information gathered from oil shale operators, government agencies, and other knowledgeable sources familiar with existing plans for mining systems and electrical installations, and on present understanding of the problems and hazards associated with oil shale mining. Additional discussions of specific electrical problems related to oil shale mining are also presented. These specific problems include: ? Ground fault current levels ? Permissible electric wheel motors ? Permissible batteries and electric starting systems ? Intrinsically safe instrumentation and applicability of existing test standards.

This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining , preparation , and utilization of coal . This mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee , which cooperated with a counterpart British committee . The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter , Deputy Solid Fuels Administrator . The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. The present trend toward concentration of mining activities into fewer sections of a coal mine and application of automation and remote control technologies favor utilization of the longwall mining method. Longwall mining also offers the potential for improving safety and productivity, better ground control and higher levels of recovery. The production potential of a longwall operation is determined by the interaction of several factors including the rate of face advance, the thickness of extraction, the speed of cutting and hauling equipment, the physical dimensions of a longwall panel, and the reliability and availability of the equipment. Some of these factors are dictated by the environment in which the extraction process is to be undertaken. Some other factors, however, can be manipulated in order to optimize the production of the system. The objective of this paper is to develop a stochastic model to simulate the production operations in longwall mining. The activities and parameters that affect the production potential of the longwall operations and the relationships between the activities are identified. An attempt is made to verify these relationships through the use of existing data. The model is then used as a computer simulator to investigate the effects of various activities and parameters on the production capacity of a panel.

Each reference is evaluated by keywords, providing the reader with a means of rapidly sorting through the references to locate those articles with the coal mining region and subjects of interest. THE BUREAU OF MINES was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve mineral resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting these industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to "disseminate information concerning these subjects 'in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.'" In accordance with that directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau sources. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes Bureau reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1960 to December 31, 1964. It, supplements the 50-year list of Bureau publications issued from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960,2 and the 50-year list of articles by Bureau authors published outside the Bureau from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960.3 It supersedes the annual lists of Bureau publications and articles from January 1 to December 31, 1960,4 from January 1 to December 31, 1961,5 from January 1 to December 31, 1962,6 and from January 1 to December 31, 1963.7 The leading general and technical libraries of the United States maintain files of the Bureau's publications. To plan a safe and efficient coal mining operation, the design engineer should use all the available information regarding the property to be exploited. The reliability of the mining operation must be as high as possible so that the plants relying on the coal can operate at the maximum design capacity. A good design should incorporate all of the known geological characteristics of the deposit, the structural and physical properties of the coal, as well as the rock which will form the roof and floor of the mine openings. A systematic method is proposed as a guide to insure a mine design that will be safe, efficient and will minimize surface disturbances resulting from mining operations. It is anticipated that the method proposed will result in maximum extraction at perhaps minimum cost to the operator. In general, to develop a mining area, several factors are systematically reviewed: (1) determination of the economic minability of the deposit, (2) the computation of the coal reserves, (3) the marketability of the coal, and (4) the life of the property. In general, boreholes are drilled in a predetermined pattern and geophysical or geological methods are used to log the boreholes. The information so obtained is primarily used to determine the quality and the extent of the deposit and to determine to some extent such geological features as faults, barren areas, washouts, and channels.

"The rate of progress in the last three years in the development of differential flotation has been rapid beyond the realization of most people. Differential flotation is no longer a ""delicate"" and unreliable process, but is now in wide use. Its ""safety"" is due to the wide use of chemicals which either depress or enhance floatability by definite modification of surfaces.The extent of the development and reliability of differential flotation methods any be emphasized by pointing out that there are now several customall-flotation"" plants in this country treating complex lead-zinc-iron ores from widely separated mines. While these ores differ in chemical composition and apparently in physical nature, the various ores treated in such a plant are passed through the same crushing and grinding equipment and through the same flotation machines and flow sheet with only slight changes, if any, in quantity and kind of chemicals and oils added.Some of the development in differential flotation is due to intelligent research on the part of well-trained chemists and metallurgists; much of It must be attributed to empirical testing.Much of the success in differential flotation is due to more care being given to constant conditions with regard to such factors as (1) fineness of grinding, (2) density of pulp entering flotation machines, (3) quantity and constancy of oils and chemicals added to the pulp, and (4) place of addition of reagents, and time of ""conditioning"" treatment of pulp with reagents."

FALKIE, DIRECTOR, BUREAU OF MINES, U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR, BEFORE THE FALL MEETING OF THE SOCIETY OF MINING ENGINEERS, AIME, ACAPULCO, MEXICO, SEPTEMBER 23, 1974 This is a time of uncertainty on the world mineral scene. For some of the world's so-called "developed" countries, reserves and production of key minerals are running low. And, we have learned that the energy so essential in recovering and processing minerals can suddenly be in short supply. The prospects for a "no growth" situation in energy or mineral consumption are practically nil. Moreover, the world's economy is in flux, casting doubt on whether traditional mineral customers will continue to be able to buy, or for that matter, whether traditional suppliers of minerals will continue to sell. It is clear that the mineral situation is contributing to world inflationary pressures, which incidentally are most damaging to developing countries. So it is appropriate that SME members devote this session to the world mineral situation, and consider some of the opportunities and responsibilities that we will inevitably encounter as the future becomes the present. The opportunities, to me at least, are especially intriguing, I have the good fortune to be part of an organization that has an enormous capability and responsibility for dealing with mineral problems. The Interior Department's Bureaus, including the Bureau of Mines, have been around for a long time. They are. a prolific and reliable source of both mineral information and mineral technology.

THIS REVIEW contains abstracts of the technical literature and patents dealing with the history, development, and commercial application of the Bergius and related processes for the hydrogenation, under greater than atmospheric pressures, of liquid and solid carbonaceous materials such as coal, lignite, their distillation and extraction products, pitches and tars, and petroleum and its distillation residues. An attempt has been made to include abstracts of all the published information on this process and of as much of the captured foreign documents and reports compiled therefrom as could consistently be reviewed during the time allotted for the work. Contact with the current literature and patents and review of the foreign documents will be continued and the information will appear in Synthetic Liquid Fuels Abstracts, which is being issued bimonthly as a Bureau of Mines publication. The material in this review is divided in two sections-literature (part I) and patents (part II)-and each of these is arranged alphabetically by author or patentee with further chronological arrangement under each author or group of authors. Secondary authors and patentees as well as assignees are cross-indexed to the main entry. In serial articles or reports the complete series appears in the alphabetical arrangement according to the author of the first member of the series. Succeeding members as well as secondary authors are entered as cross references; Titles of the journals are used as the authors in anonymous references. By following such a procedure, an author index is not required. However, a detailed subject index and a numerical patent list by countries are given as part III.

Since World War II, when off-track mining became popular, mining machinery has undergone much change. However, the change has been basically to make the machines more powerful, more productive and more reliable. Little change has been made, in this period, in the basic mining system. While steady improvement was made in productivity until the passage of the new Federal Coal Mine Health & Safety Act, I believe that the cost Co benefit ratio of further improvement from this basic approach of improving the existing extractive tool is not as promising as I believe may be obtained from a new approach. Consequently, six years ago Conoco and Consol undertook a comprehensive long-range R&D program to see if improvements of a more basic nature could be made in underground mining. We concluded early in our program that while many things currently limit the rate of production such as the rate at which roof can be supported, time needed to advance ventilation systems, time required to clean up and rock dust, time required to maintain and service equipment as well as time lost due to haulage deficiencies, that the key to improvement was a truly flexible continuous high capacity haulage. With face equipment in use today, mining rates can be increased with such a haulage system where the ability to support the roof exceeds the ability of conventional haulage equipment to remove the coal. More importantly, if we could develop such a system, it would set the stage for development of far more sophisticated methods of mining at the face than exist today, and as new and more dependable mining machines and methods are developed, continuous transportation will enable the gains envisaged in production to be realized.

The presence of misplaced ultra-fine particles has been shown to decrease the separation efficiency of unit operations used in coal preparation. Although the classification of fine coal was considered to be adequate for the needs of the coal industry during the 1970's and 1980's, it has become apparent that further improvements in the yield/ash/moisture relationship achieved by coal preparation plants will require increased efficiency in this size separation step. This paper describes the issues which are evolving in this area, and the capability of current and developing techniques to address the problems which need to be overcome.

"In 2012, Golder Construction Inc. was awarded a Design-Build contract for the design and construction of an extensive, deep ground improvement scheme to support up to 20 metres (66 ft) high Mechanically Stabilized Earth walls and bulk earthworks required for the development of the proposed Kitimat Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility at Bish Cove, British Columbia (BC). Utilizing Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) to construct barrettes consisting of overlapping rectangular panels of in-situ cement-treated soils, a deep mixing scheme, covering an area of approximately 12,900 m2 (15,430 yd2) and comprising some 1645 CSM panels to depths of up to 30.7 m (101 ft), was developed to provide the required static and seismic stability for the LNG structures, and meet the project-specific performance criteria.CSM panels were constructed through varying thicknesses and discontinuous layers of fine-grained, very soft to soft marine deposits, and loose to compact sands, with occasional interbeds of dense sands and gravels. Panel completion criteria was based on soil response factors, as measured by the CSM equipment, with the design requiring a typical embedment of about 2 m (7 ft) into dense silty sand to sand and gravel to provide the required bearing. A total volume of approximately 73,900 m3 (96,660 yd3) of soil was treated with cement to consistently yield average unconfined compressive strengths exceeding 2.5 MPa (363 psi).This paper outlines the challenges associated with the construction and quality control of this large deep mixing scheme in highly variable geotechnical conditions at a remote location with barge-only access, and limited communication facilities. Specifically the paper will discuss the logistical challenges faced and solutions adopted for the project; equipment redundancy requirements for a 24/7 operation; the impacts of wear and tear, as well as variability in subsurface conditions on productivity; quality control processes adopted for the project, including the value of provision of an on-site laboratory; and materials handling issues, and their impacts on mix design and quality control."

"Communities near sand mines and processing facilities in Wisconsin have raised concerns regarding possible exposure to ambient respirable (PM4) crystalline silica. Fenceline PM4 (particulate matter captured with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers aerodynamic diameter) crystalline silica concentration data were compiled at Fairmount Santrol Inc., Mathy Construction Inc. and U.S. Silica facilities. The long-term average PM4 crystalline silica concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.45 micrograms/m3 when sample values below the limit of quantification were treated as zeros. All of the long-term average concentrations were less than 20 percent of the Minnesota Department of Health’s and California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment’s PM4 crystalline silica chronic reference exposure level of 3.0 micrograms/m3. The measured concentrations were consistently within the local background concentration range.Air Control Techniques P.C. compiled the sampling data using Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. Partisol 2000i PM2.5 samplers meeting the requirements of 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix L. These samplers were adapted to capture particulate matter with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers. The use of polyvinyl chloride filters allowed for crystalline silica X-ray diffraction analysis by NIOSH Method 7500. The combined use of adjusted PM2.5 filter-based samplers with Method 7500 crystalline silica analyses provided for a highly sensitive limit of quantification of 0.31 micrograms/m3 of PM4 crystalline silica.BackgroundIn 2005, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA, 2005) adopted a 70-year chronic reference exposure level (REL) for PM4 (particulate matter having aerodynamic diameter of 4 micrometers or less) crystalline silica. The REL was extrapolated from occupational hygiene epidemiological studies, essentially all of which were based on in-plant PM4 crystalline silica measurements. No well-established ambient sampling technique for PM4 crystalline silica was available at the time that OEHHA adopted its REL. The personal samplers used for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Method 0600 in-plant sampling of employee exposure were designed for concentrations higher than ambient levels. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of PM4 crystalline silica on NIOSH 0600 filters was too high for the effective sampling of ambient air."

There is much debate on the Competent Persons qualifying criteria for providing classified resource estimates for public reporting. The CRIRSCO family of codes including the JORC Code, SAMREC, PERC and NI43–101, require Competent Persons to have at least five years ‘relevant’ experience and belong to professional bodies. These codes provide further, albeit vague, guidelines to assist individuals with their personal decision to take on the mantle of ‘Competent Person’. There is a risk, however, that these qualifying criteria can result in ill-prepared Competent Persons whose actions and recommendations would undermine their own reputation and that of the organisations that employ them; the integrity of the profession and the principles based reporting systems; as well as the stability of stock markets that rely on these estimates.Based on doctoral study on the development of professional competency within the mining industry, this paper presents an evaluation of the suitability of the current qualifying criteria as well as an analysis of alternative criteria. The research included a series of interviews with industry experts and an online survey of resource geologists. Semi-structured interviews provided a sense of experts’ expectations and interpretation of the current definition of ‘Competent Person’. The comprehensive online survey included a self-assessment, a series of situational questions designed to evaluate responses to typical resource geology scenarios and a set of open-ended questions relating to factors contributing to competency development.A summary of the data analysis, interpretation of the results and a set of recommendations for revised ‘Competent Person’ qualifying criteria are presented. This paper contributes to the conversation on what makes a person suitably qualified to report classified resource estimates and provides practical targets that can be used in the professional development of resource geologists.CITATION:Coombes, J, 2014. Influence of frothers (a-terpineol and n-octanol) concentration on kinetics of a three phase contact (TPC) formation by a bubble colliding with a hydrophobic surface (Teflon) of different roughness was studied using a high-speed camera (1040 frames per second). It was found that the Teflon surface roughness and the frother concentration strongly affected time of the TPC formation (tTPC) and time of drainage (tD) of the liquid film separating the colliding bubble from the solid surfaces. With increasing Teflon surface roughness, from ca 1 to 80 µm, the time of the TPC formation was shortened by over the order of magnitude, from ca 100 to a few milliseconds only. At low a-terpineol and n-octanol concentrations, thetTPC values were shorter than in distilled water due to lowering the bubble velocity in the frother presence and diminished bouncing of the colliding bubble. However, at high frothers concentrations the tTPC values were prolonged, despite that the bubble velocity was similar. The prolongation of the tTPC at high frother concentrations indicates that air (micro- and/or nano-bubbles) was present at the Teflon surfaces of different roughness. The mechanism of the tTPCprolongation at high frother dosage is described.

Detailed underground mine design and optimisation studies undertaken by the author over the past few years have clearly demonstrated that additional value can be created by varying the cut-off grade (COG) spatially throughout a deposit as well as over time. This additional value can be particularly significant for marginal operations. This paper, by way of worked examples, illustrates the conceptual and practical considerations of applying a differential cut-off policy for an underground mine to both maximise value and manage risks associated with production and metal price volatility. Consideration is given to both the design stage of a new mine and to the strategic and practical application of a differential cut-off policy in an operating mine.

Frictional rock bolts are widely used because of their low cost. However, they have a thin wall section that makes them prone to corrosion, and they cannot be relied on to provide long-term ground support. It is difficult to assess the capacity after the bolts have been installed as they can only be pulled out if this has been allowed for during insertion. The questions of how long can the rock bolts function effectively and the effectiveness of various surface coatings, which can have significant cost implications are, investigated in this study.A series of accelerated corrosion tests have been performed on frictional rock bolts. The rock bolts, typically 900 mm long, have been inserted into concrete cylinders produced using a styrofoam insert to create the hole for the bolt insertion. Strata rock bolts with four surface coatings have been tested: uncoated black steel, galvanised, enduro (plastic coated) and coated with a proprietary aluminium/zinc alloy. Tests have been performed on two diameters of bolts. Following insertion of the bolts, the concrete cylinders were placed in a large drum filled with saltwater and current was applied to accelerate the corrosion process. The rock bolts were then extracted at various times after the commencement of corrosion. Comparison of the insertion and extraction resistances shows that corrosion initially increases the bolt resistance and that substantial section loss is required for the bolt resistance to drop significantly.CITATION:Airey, D W, 2014.
