Large scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogenous mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to take advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semi- autogenous mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4,476 kW (6,000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 mtpd (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and five variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.

"Many modern concentrators with VSD driven SAG mills still rely on the control room operator to manually adjust the speed in reaction to increasing bearing pressure. All too often, the problem with this strategy is by the time the operator reacts with a sudden speed increase, the SAG Mill is likely already on its way to loading up. To assist the new operators, the SAG Mill at B2Gold’s Fekola Mine in Mali needed a robust control that could handle load changes and unmeasured disturbances with minimal operator intervention. With modern Distributed Control Systems (DCS) powerful enough to run advanced control, they often have Model Predictive Control (MPC) blocks built in or available as an “add-on” license, and thus MPC can be readily implemented within the modern concentrator with a relatively low added capital cost. This paper discusses an implementation of two single output MPC controllers to control the SAG Mill at Fekola. This was implemented using the existing signals and advanced control blocks available to the installed DCS.INTRODUCTION Many modern concentrators with VSD driven SAG mills still rely on the control room operator to manually adjust the speed in reaction to increasing bearing pressure. All too often, the problem with this strategy is that by the time the operator reacts with a sudden speed increase, the SAG Mill is likely already on its way to loading up. The next step the operator may take may be to cut back the feed rate, or production until the SAG is once again stable. With this sudden reaction comes an abrupt change in SAG rotational speed and power consumption that sends a surge of material down the circuit as the mill suddenly ejects more pulp. Furthermore, choosing a higher rotational speed can lead to higher than normal liner wear as the cataract overshoots the toe of the charge and impacts the liners. After start-up at B2Gold’s Fekola Gold Mine in 2017, the SAG mill was being controlled manually. The SAG rotational speed was adjusted manually by the operator in step changes depending on whether the SAG bearing pressure was increasing, decreasing or stable. During this time of manual control, the SAG fresh feed rate was also adjusted to a tonnage setpoint with a PID controller. Generally, the SAG fresh feed rate setpoint was kept at a target value, but then the feed rate was throttled back if the SAG mill or grinding circuit showed signs of overloading. The extra challenges were that the operators had limited experience and were concurrently learning how the plant operated. Also, they were also occupied with managing situations in the rest of the plant. Often their attention was drawn away from the SAG mill and during that time, the SAG Mill would load up before they could react."

Deposits of ferromanganese crust containing cobalt and nickel occur on the seafloor in the Pacific Ocean near the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. This paper describes developmental flotation metallurgy to separate crust from its associated substrate gangue. Important variables in ferromanganese crust flotation include reagent type, aeration rate, conditioning time and agitation intensity, pH, temperature, water type, and feed size distribution. Flotation in seawater of minus 600 ~m (-28 mesh) material assaying 6.2% Mn, 0.2% Co, and 0.13% Ni with diesel fuel-crude tall oil-sulfonate collectors produces concentrates assaying 15% Mn, 0.6% Co, and 0.3% Ni with recoveries of 89-95% while removing 62% of the feed weight.

Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) has recently completed the construction of copper leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning facilities at their Toquepala and Cuajone plants in Southern Peru. Much of the ore for these new operations is the result of the existing mining operations that have been in existence as early as 1959. At Toquepala, pre-conditioning and bacterial dump leaching of the sulfide ore that was too low in copper content to be processed through the copper concentrator began in 1987. The Cuajone heap leach operation is treating copper oxide ore that has been stockpiled since the Cuajone concentrator began operation in 1976. The pregnant leach solutions from the dump leaching at Toquepala and the permanent pad heap at Cuajone are combined into one plant feed solution. Adjacent to the large dumps at Toquepala, a solvent extraction and electrowinning facility has been constructed. The electrowinning facility has a planned annual production rate of35,000 metric tons per year Grade A cathode copper. Initial production of the cathode copper began in November 1995.

The possibility of replacing the brattice cloth closest to the coal mine working face with an air curtain mounted on top of a continuous-mining machine or with a diffuser fan was explored by the Bureau of Mines. Preliminary tests conducted at a full-scale model working face with the brattice end set at 18 feet showed that the air curtain improved face ventilation only slightly and was not nearly as effective as placing the brattice at 10 feet. A 2,000-ft3/min diffuser was more effective than the air curtain. It is concluded that the air curtain probably could not function as a line brattice extension, although the diffuser fan may have some potential.

A mine production locomotive, the world?s first applied industrial fuelcell vehicle, has been designed and tested in the context of a number of proof-of-concept projects supported by the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute, an international consortium of stakeholders dedicated to facilitate the commercialization of fuelcell vehicles. The locomotive?s simple electric-powered motor and controller system was ideal to study a number of requirements related to fuelcell power application: hydrogen power plant operation, underground hydrogen use, risk and regulatory requirements, production performance versus the conventional battery-powered locomotive version under measured duty cycles and production requirements, power plant design improvements for other fuelcell vehicles, and cost-benefit aspects. This article will focus on the design and testing aspects of this project which has led to successful performance demonstrations of the vehicle under surface and underground conditions at two mines. It will also present information on the creation of a safe, reliable and efficient power plant which fulfilled its design objectives, including longer productivity time for a given vehicle fill-up.

The Ten Section field is approximately 10 miles southwest of Bakers-field, Kern County, Calif. (Fig. 1). There is no surface evidence of the existence of the Ten Section structure, which subsurface exploration has shown to be a gently folded, anticlinal dome. Regionally, this field occurs as a fold in the deeper beds of the gently rolling floor of the San Joaquin Valley. It is on the easterly slope of the valley, its position with relation to the axis of this syncline not having been determined. The mining industry is currently focusing to develop and adopt sustainable collector chemistry that can efficiently recover valuable minerals from their natural state. However, a limited number of research can be seen on the design and synthesis of polymeric flotation collectors. The focal objective of this research is to synthesise a more effective polymeric collector with advanced architecture to utilise in the mineral processing industry. Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) co-polymers with cardanol derivatives have the potential to selectively trap valuable metals in the flotation process in a more efficient way. Cardanol exhibits amenability to chemical modification for making tailor-made monomers that can further produce polymers with high value. The synthesis of a series of fit for purpose copolymers in this study was accomplished by RAFT polymerisation. The ability to design complex architecture is a significant advantage in engineering polymeric collectors by RAFT polymerisation. Initially, commercially available cardanol was converted to a cardanol based monomer and copolymerised with commercially available monomers to synthesise a series of novel cardanol based copolymers with predetermined molecular weights. The side groups of the copolymer were chemically modified to incorporate functionality that can be selectively adsorbed on the chalcopyrite surface.

"Discounted cash flow analysis provides a means of relating the magnitude of expected future cash profits to the magnitude of the initial cash investment required to purchase an asset or to develop it for commercial production. The objectives of discounted cash flow analysis are to determine:.. The net present value of a stream of expected future cash revenues and expenditures... The rate of return which the expected future cash flows will yield on a given level of initial cash investment.In the case of mineral properties, discounted cash flow analysis is generally accepted as the preferred method of valuation, whenever sufficient data are available to permit its reasoned application. Sufficient data are required to support estimation of all of the individual elements of cash revenue and cash expenditure which will be associated with the development and operation of the property, up to the end of its estimated life. It is the accuracy of these input estimates which determines the validity of the resulting determinations of profitability and rate of return on invested capital.In undertaking any discounted cash flow analysis, it is important to recognize certain fundamental attributes of the mining industty:.. The basis of any mineral development is the existence of an ore reserve... Costs are determined by the number of tonnes mined and processed, while revenues are determined by the number of pounds or ounces of metal produced. The two are related by the recovered grade of the ore... Profit is typically more sensitive to changes in revenue than it is to changes in cost... Commodity price is a principal determinant of revenue, but it is also the factor with which is associated the greatest level of financial risk.In the end, of all of the factors which must be considered in the discounted cash flow valuation of a mineral property, the most significant are the reliability of the reserve estimate, particularly with respect to recovered grade, the price at which the product is to be sold, and the risk of not maintaining the projected level of price."

This report describes the construction and calibration of two ice calorimeters and includes results of high-temperature heat-content measurements, made by the Federal Bureau of Mines, on rubidium fluoride, hafnium tetrafluoride, cesium chloride, and cesium iodide. The heats and entropies of fusion of rubidium fluoride, cesium chloride, and cesium iodide have been calculated at their respective melting points using equations derived from the experimental heat-content data. Hafnium tetrafluoride did not melt within the range of temperatures investigated. Heat and entropy of transition of cesium chloride from the alpha to the beta form were also determined. INTRODUCTION Free-energy data usually afford the cheapest and quickest means of determining the feasibility of experimentally untested reactions. For known reactions, free-energy data show the variation of the equilibrium constant with temperature and make it possible to calculate, without experiment, the maximum ratio of product to raw material for a given chemical process.

Ocean floor sulfide deposits are now known from many parts of the world mid-ocean ridge system and from some seamounts. Clearly they can be expected to occur commonly on the ocean floor. However, only two or three of the known deposits appear to approach the million-ton size, and in none of the deposits has the grade been well-defined. Can knowledge of the processes that happen within the hydrothermal plumbing below deposits help define the conditions under which large, high-grade deposits form? Here I review present knowledge of ocean-floor hydrothermal processes to attempt a first answer to this question. There are three sources of information about these processes. The solutions emerging from active systems must be compatible with patterns of alteration that underlie the volcanogenic sulfide deposits of ophiolite complexes, which are slices of ocean crust thrust onto land. Both of these types of evidence can be linked by computer modelling of the exchange of heat and metals between rocks and flowing water.

THE Climax district is in northeastern Lake County, Colorado, on Fremont Pass (elevation 11,320 ft.) where the continental divide runs east-west joining high peaks of the Mosquito Range with the Sawatch Range, prominent ranges of the central Rocky Mountains. The mining towns of Leadville and Kokomo are thirteen miles to the south and seven miles to the northwest, respectively. Good highways lead to Denver (100 miles) by way of Kokomo, Loveland Pass, and Idaho Springs, and to Colorado Springs by way of Leadville. The ore deposit and mine are about one mile east of Fremont Pass and 600 ft. higher on the southwestern flank of Bartlett Mountain, a peak in the Mosquito Range. The molybdenite deposit lies within the Colorado mineral belt extending across the Rocky Mountains from Jamestown and Boulder to Silverton and Telluride. (See Fig. 1.) Fremont Pass is a broad open divide separating the drainage of the Tenmile River (Pacific) from that of the East Fork of the Arkansas River (Atlantic) ; but the mountains to the east and west are extremely rugged; altitudes in the vicinity vary from 11,000 to 14,000 ft. The two methods for calibrating the parameters K and (alpha) for use in Gy’s equation for the fundamental sampling error (FSE), the duplicate sampling analysis (DSA) and the segregation fractionalised analysis (SFA) are described in detail. A case study using identical broken reef material from a Witwatersrand-type orebody is calibrated using the DSA and SFA methods and the results are compared. Classically, the form of Gy’s equation for the FSE raises the nominal size of fragments given by dN to a power of 3. Gy’s formula is a theoretical formula applicable in the case when fragments are randomly collected one by one, which is obviously never the case. This is because the fragment shape factor (f) and the granulometric factor (g) were introduced to take care of this anomaly. More recent formulae, such as those suggested by François-Bongarçon and Lyman, are empirically based formula. A later modification of Gy’s formula raises dN to the power ? (alpha), the latter term being calibrated with the coefficient K in the DSA and SFA methods. The preferred value of ? (alpha) for low-grade gold ores used by sampling practitioners in the mining industry is 1.5. A review of calibration experiments for low-grade gold ores using the DSA and SFA methods has produced values of K that vary between 70 and 170 and values of alpha in the range 0.97 to 1.30. The average value for alpha is found to be 1, rather than 3 as originally proposed in the classic form of Gy’s equation or the industry preference for 1.5. It is suggested that for low-grade gold bearing ores, the equation for the FSE should raise dN to a power of 1. Such an equation for the variance of the combined FSE plus the grouping and segregation error, now referred to as the short-term component of the quality fluctuation error (QFE1), greatly simplifies the characterisation of gold ores, which now only requires the calibration of K for a given mass and established fragment size. The implications for the heterogeneity test from the generalised equation are that provided the fragments have been screened to within a narrow size range, any particular size will return a value for K that is acceptable for use in the sampling nomogram.CITATION:Minnitt, R C A, 2017. "A significant effort is expended on preparation of the capital estimate for feasibility studies. The development of the operating cost estimate is usually allocated a significantly smaller budget and less emphasis is placed on ensuring the accuracy of the operating cost. This paper presents a comparison of capital and operating costs of hydrometallurgy processing plants in order to demonstrate the importance that variations in operating costs have on the overall life-of-mine costs. The analysis is supported by a case study on the operating costs of a water treatment plant at an existing Australian hydrometallurgy facility at the feasibility design level. INTRODUCTIONDetermination of the economic validity of a minerals processing project is a critical outcome of a feasibility study. In many cases, the financial results of the feasibility study will determine if the project should proceed to execution. Ensuring that these results are reliable and built upon sound engineering practices allows companies to make informed decisions on resource opportunities and the selected technology.The methodology for developing a capital cost estimate at the feasibility level is well established. Specialist engineering estimators use budget quotations, first principle estimation and rules-of-thumb to develop an estimate with an accuracy of typically -10% to +15%. Cost reporting software packages are used to methodically build up the estimate from design information supplied by the engineering disciplines. Risk analysis and capital expense workshops are carried out to identify potential deficiencies in the estimate. It is widely recognized that in order to successfully produce a feasibility level capital estimate with an appropriate level of accuracy, a rigorous development process is necessary.The development of the operating cost estimate is typically less rigorous than the capital cost estimate. The operating cost is normally derived by the process engineering discipline and rarely are specialist estimators used to support the development. The allocated budget for producing an operating cost is usually smaller and less emphasis is placed on ensuring the accuracy and contingency reflect the most likely operating cost scenario."

Allis Mineral Systems' GRATE-CAR agglomeration/induration/reduction process is currently being operated to process ilmenite at Tinfos Titan & Iron KS in Tyssedal, Norway. In this process, balled ilmenite concentrate is fed to a traveling grate where pellets are dried and preheated, using fully oxidized kiln exhaust gas. Hot preheated, semi-indurated pellets are fed directly to a ported kiln where reduction of the ilmenite's iron oxide fraction occurs in the presence of lump coal. The reduced pellet sand coal char are discharged from the kiln to an indirect rotary drum cooler. Cooled pellets and char are screened and magnetically separated prior to their further processing in a downstream smelting operation. The pellets are melted and the titanium dioxide and iron are separated. Operation commenced in late 1986.

FOR many years the Witwatersrand has been the leading gold mining r camp in the world and, to a Canadian mining student, could not fail to be of overwhelming interest. The vast scale upon which the operations are conducted, the enormous production accomplished, and the perfection of the operative technique, have all so forcibly impressed themselves on his memory that it is difficult to select any one feature as more outstanding than another. For the purposes of this paper, however, the author has selected the very first feature of mine operation with which he came in contact, namely, shaft sinking, as it reflects, quite as well as any other, the spirit of mining in South Africa. Early mining in Johannesburg was by open cuts or trenches, dug along the outcrops of the reefs. The ore was thrown from bench to bench to the surface. As the depth increased, rock was hoisted by bullocks. In 1887, the first shafts were sunk and true underground work began. At the same time, boreholes were put down to test the continuity of the reefs at depth. The first was at the Village Main reef. It cut the South reef at 517 feet and the Main reef leader at 581 feet. The Main reef leader assayed eleven penny-weights. Subsequent boreholes proved the reefs down to thousands of feet. Many companies secured deep-level claims as a direct result of the information obtained from the early holes. These companies then held land on which there was no readily available ore. In order to get to their pay rock, vertical shafts through the upper strata were necessary. Shareholders were impatient, and shafts had to be sunk as speedily as possible. The old methods of shaft sinking were investigated, new methods developed, and soon all records were being broken. In the last thirty-five years, the record has been slowly advanced, and last summer it was again broken to stand at 430 feet in a 31-day month. During the period from 1915 to 1935 inclusive, in the Witwatersrand district, 96 miles of shafts were sunk. Today, with the advance in the price of gold and the increase in the mining area, there are over twenty-five major shaft-sinking operations being carried on.

Based on a review of historical domestic and international chromium metal production capacity, production, consumption, trade, and trade literature, world annual chromium metal production capacity in 1995 was estimated to have been 38,300 metric tons, a drop from 43,500 tons in 1994. World chromium metal production and consumption were estimated, on average from 1984 through 1992, to have been 21,000 tons per year. U.S. consumption was estimated, on average over the same time period, to have been 6,200 tons per year. The major world chromium metal producers between 1984 and 1995 were China, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, United Kingdom, and United States. From 1984 through 1992, world trade averaged 8,400 tons per year. Germany and the United States accounted for over 75 percent of imports on average during the same time period. U.S. chromium metal import value rose from under $1 per kg before 1964 to over $6 per kg in 1993. Over the same time period, prices rose from about $4 per kg to about $10 per kg. Chemical specifications have become more stringent. Detailed chromium metal trade, prices, value, chromium metal chemical specification, and production capacity by country are reported. A shift in trade patterns was anticipated as Japan exits production and displaces Germany as the second largest importer and as Russia increases its role in world trade.

Data obtained from mine ventilation pressure and quantity surveys are required to accurately diagnose ventilation problems, project future air quantity needs, and to locate conditions adversely affecting the efficiency of a mine ventilation system. A method for making mine ventilation pressure surveys with aneroid altimeters was presented in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7809, and a description of field calculation technique is presented. This report supplements Information Circular 7809 by developing the information obtained during a mine ventilation pressure survey into a single equation suitable, with appropriate modification, for use with desk-top calculators and digital computers. The equation can be used to calculate the ventilation pres sure from the base station to any underground station, or between any two underground stations, and can be programed for semiautomatic sequential calculation using a desk-top calculator. An example of application to a programed desk-top calculator is provided in the appendix.

THE Company's smelting equipment consists of three blast furnaces, supplied with blast from two sets of vertical piston blowers, each capable of delivering 8000 cub. ft. of air per minute at a pressure of 60 oz. per sq. in. Each blower is belt-driven by a 1:30 h.p. motor. The maximum speed of the blowing engine is 35 r.p.m.No. 1, the largest of the three blast furnaces, has a crucible area of 49.5 sq. ft., and measures 11 ft. 6 in. x 5 ft. at the tuyeres.From tapping floor to feed floor measures 35 ft. 9 in., and holds, when full, 100 tons of charge. Blast enters through thirteen 3-m. tuyeres at 60-oz. pressure. Working normally, this furnace is capable of treating :300 tons of charge, exclusive of returned slag and coke, per 24: hours, with an output of 100 tons of lead. Tapped slag flows into a C.l. forehearth mounted on wheels, where any lead and matte is caught, and the slag overflows into a 3-ton cast-iron pot, in which it is drawn away by an electric locomotive and poured over the dump.
