In view of the good results which have followed the wide discussion of the rail-specifications of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, I now offer for discussion its specifications for steel forgings and steel castings. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of reaching definite conclusions on these subjects. Engineers, consumers and manufacturers are alike interested in securing good, reliable, uniform steel. In this connection, I would call particular attention to the important paper read by Mr. C. H. Ridsdale, last September, before the Iron and Steel Institute, as bearing on them; and, for convenience of reference in the discussion, I append the Table in Section VI. of his paper, on a Manifestations, Classified mider Heads of Faults of Different Types. appearing after Treatment by the User, for Tracing their Probable Source."* The discussion of these specifications will be practically a continuation of our former discussions on "The Physics of Steel." We have passed through a period in which the chemical composition of steel has received the greatest prominence; but failures of steel forgings and castings of the best chemical composition have shown that we could not control the quality of the finished product by the chemical composition alone. It must be admitted that differences in the physical properties of the steel, greater than those due to small variations in composition,are produced by heat-treatment, both in connection with the mechanical work of forging and otherwise. The present result is a strong tendency to deem the heat-treatment more important than the chemical composition. I think the mean course is the safer. Cette magnésie, dite active, est soluble dans un acide faible ou même dans les solutions de sels d'ammonium.Plusieurs precédés chimiques ont été proposés afin d'extraire sous forme de composés magnésiens la magnésie de la serpentine. La plupart de ces procédés comportent une activation par calcination de la serpentine préalablement à une Iixiviation par un acide ou par une solution d'un sel d'ammonium.Malgré la contamination par Ie fer et par d'autres éléments, les compositions chimiques des rejets de différentes mines d 'amiante du Québec, présentées au tableau 1, sont très proches de la serpentine typique. Addition of an acid waste to an alkaline cyanide waste was investigated for five different combinations of electroplating wastes. At the optimum final pH values of the mixtures, metals and cyanides were almost quantita¬tively precipitated. No evolution of hydrogen cyanide was detected by a few additional processing steps, significant amounts of variable metals were recovered for recycling the waste-plus-Waste step is attractive because no reagents are required, metals arc concentrated, and a relatively harmless effluent that meets most water quality Standards for cyanide content is produced.

The strength of anchorage of various types of roof bolts in permafrost depends on the types of rock in which they are installed. Variation in the mine thermal regime results in weakening of the roof and walls, and at times total loss of ice cement bonds takes place in the surrounding rockmass. In mines with positive ventilation air temperature, the wedge or expansion types of bolts may become weakened due to the transfer of heat into the anchorage through the metal rod and subsequent thawing of rocks. Effective operation and evaluation of roof bolt systems for mine workings in permafrost require predictions of the dynamics of wall thawing by warm ventilation air. Introduction It is the purpose of this paper to review the subject of roasting as preparation of refractory gold ores and concentrates for cyanidation, with particular reference to operations at the mill of Beattie Gold Mines (Que.), Ltd., Duparquet, Quebec. Two earlier papers relating to the Beattie roasting operations are cited as background to the ? present discussion, and more general reference is made to other publications relating? to geology and metallurgy at Beattie. The Beattie roasting plant was built in 1937 as an addition to the existing flotation and cyanidation plant to permit complete processing of the ore at the mine property. Previously, the flotation concentrate had been cyanided, yielding 70 per cent of the gold values, followed by re-flotation of a concentrate from the cyanide residue. This re-floated residue was shipped to a smelter for recovery of gold values unavailable from direct cyanidation. The roasting plant itself is of interest through application in its design of multiple-hearth roasters and a Cottrell plant for separate recovery of dust and arsenic. In the laboratory and plant studies that accompanied development of the plant into a dependable and efficient working unit have been found principles and ideas applicable to other roasting 'problems. Before enlarging on these aspects relating particularly to the Beattie problems and plant, brief consideration is given to roasting in general.

It is often alleged by mine ventilation engineers that no reliable method exists to forecast the levels of radiation to be encountered in future uranium mines. It results that the design of uranium mine ventilation systems is based on factors other than radiological hazards, such as radon and radon daughter concentrations, for which permissible limits are set. Ventilation has been used to date as the main control mechanism for radon and radon daughters. Although it has become increasingly difficult to provide enough ventilating air to reduce the radon gas and its daughter products to safe levels in some mining arrangements, it is not the object of this paper to discuss alternatives to ventilation. This paper will describe a methodology followed by the authors over the years to estimate the levels of radiation to be encountered in underground and open pit uranium mines. Ventilating air is used to maintain working level concentrations within safe limits. The sources of radon and radon daughters and the quantities of each which will be produced, will be of great value in planning and designing a ventilation system to control them. This information can afterwards be integrated into the overall mine design. The methodology to be outlined can also be used to estimate, given a mine design format, the radiation levels to be encountered. If levels are not acceptable, modifications in the mine design can be made at an early stage. The emphasis is placed on an integrated effort where the ventilation engineers and the mine design engineers work in close collaboration from the very start of the mining project. Estimation of radon and radon daughter levels can be initiated as soon as core samples are obtained from the exploration programmes.

Lump coal with high volatility is used for providing heat and reductive gas, and ensuring permeability in COREX. However, it is apt to be pulverized in transport and storage process. Therefore, comprehensive utilization of the pulverized coal to produce coal briquettes with appropriate binders is significant, among which the molasses binder cannot meet the technological requirements. In this paper, coal tar pitch binder and BJ additive were used in briquetting and carbonizing process of coal powder. The results showed that BJ effectively activated cold state cohesiveness of the pitch and make it bond the coke particles to a firm briquette at room temperature .Carbonizations of coal and coal tar pitch achieved obvious constriction and formed a carbonized skeleton. The drop resistance of wet briquettes reached over 50 times/1meter. When cured at 1000 °C for 1h under nitrogen atmosphere, the compressive strength of carbonized briquettes came to 6.43 Mpa.

Implementing a Digital Twin at the San Xavier Mine Laboratory (Sahuarita, AZ), requires a network redesign with a robust architecture. The goal is to create an ecosystem in where all personnel and equipment can be monitored in real-time from the University of Arizona campus, visualizing the site in a digital terrain model. A wireless mesh will help to test robots with autonomous features. Expected outcomes include data retrieval and analytics, the evolution of communications and safety protocols, tele-operation, and an innovated approach for managing the site with new supervision challenges. A timeline with expected commissioning benchmarks is also included.

Mining employees undertaking shift work are at considerable risk of experiencing sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm disruptions. In the complex, high-risk environment of mining, these sleep and circadian disruptions lead to adverse impacts on employee health, alertness and safety. Evidence-based tools that effectively target improvements in sleep health amongst shift workers are needed. Variability in work hours and individual differences in the response to shift work mean that a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution is often insufficient in complex work environments. Currently no interventions provide tailored support for shift workers based on their rosters, personal commitments and sleep habits. Existing technologies, such as smartphone applications and watches, allow sleep monitoring, but their strategies are targeted towards night sleepers, which does not translate to shift work contexts. To address this, our team has developed an innovative digital tool that implements biomathematical models to provide automated, personalised sleep and circadian intervention strategies to optimise sleep, alertness and performance during shift work. The tool uses mathematical models of sleep and alertness regulation that provide physiologically optimal times for an individual to sleep when experiencing circadian disruption. This program of work included co-designed development of a world-first app with shift workers and the examination of the preliminary efficacy of the intervention for improving sleep, alertness and performance.

Siskon Gold has started gold production at the San Juan deposit in northern California. The mine is located about 27 km (17 miles) north of Nevada City, CA (Fig. 1). It is scheduled to be-come the largest underground gold mine in California. It is situated in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the Mother Lode gold belt. The property consists of 8 km2 (2,000 acres) of patented land. It is situated in a topographically high area known as San Juan Ridge, which is 213 m (700 ft) above and between the Middle Yuba and South Yuba rivers. The elevation is between 790 and 914 m (2,600 and 3,000ft) above sea level. Annual precipitation averages 1,346mm (53 in.). Most of that falls between November and April.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a comprehensive laboratory study of the thermal ignitability of various carbonaceous dust clouds with particular emphasis on various ranks of coal dust. The tests were conducted using a new 1.2-L furnace. Autoignition temperatures of dust clouds were obtained as a function of coal volatility and particle size. Dust particles and gas samples were collected by a rapid-sampling system in order to study the reactions involved in preignition and postignition processes. The autoignition temperatures measured in the new 1.2-L furnace were significantly lower and therefore more conservative than those measured previously in the Godbert-Greenwald furnace. The combined effects of thermal and electrical ignition of dust clouds were also studied in the 1.2-L furnace using electrical discharges of varying energies at ambient and elevated temperatures. The minimum spark energy necessary to ignite a dust cloud decreased significantly as the temperature of the dust cloud increased.

IT IS APPROPRIATE that your Institute should have chosen, for its 1956 Annual General Meeting, the Capital City of a province which is making such rapid advances in mining. The railway industry is proud to be playing an active role in this development, expenditures on equipment and railway construction in the Province of Quebec alone in recent years being in ?excess of a quarter of a billion dollars. In looking up some background material for this address I ran across a definition of a mine by Mark Twain, the great American humorist, which I thought might amuse you. He said that a mine was "a hole in the ground owned by a liar". I am sure that if he were alive to witness the enormous value attached to Canada's mineral resources today he would quickly change his definition. Canada's postwar record of mining development has been staggering in its variety and enormity. Historically, only the ?construction of our transcontinental rail ways outranks the largest of three of these development projects - the aluminum undertaking at Kitimat; the Quebec-Labrador iron ore deposits ; and the petroleum and natural gas developments in Wes tern Canada.

MORE than 70 igneous pipes and dikes are known to occur in Cambrian sediments throughout an approximately circular area of about 75 sq miles in southwestern Ste. Genevieve County and southeastern St. Francois County, Mo., across the southern portion of the Farmington anticline, which is outlined in fig. 1. From evidence obtained from fossil fragments taken from some of the in-trusive~, and from the similarity in composition of the more basic intrusives to those of known age in surrounding states, these pipes and dikes are believed to be at least post-Devonian and probably Cretaceous in age. As first postulated by Rust,' these intrusives are believed to represent explosion tubes, or diatremes, punched through great thicknesses of solid rock by gaseous pressure. The particular intrusive studied is located about 1 mile north of the small town of Avon at an elevation of 880 ft in the EVz SEy4 NEY4 of see. 2, T. 35N, R. 7E. Outcrop is through the Bonneterre dolomite in two separated exposures. The larger outcrop extends east and west for about 50 ft along a tributary in a small ravine (fig. 2). The smaller exposure occurs as a few scattered patches over an area 20 ft square about 100 ft to the north. The area between the exposures is covered, but scattered patches of the Bonneterre dolomite outcrop throughout the area surrounding the diatreme. Where exposed, contact relations show the surrounding dolomite to be shattered and metamorphosed to a fine-grained rock for a distance of 15 to 20 ft from the intrusive. The igneous rock occurs as a dark greenish-gray porphyry near the center of the diatreme and as a fine-grained, greenish-gray material containing lapilli and metamorphosed fragments of dolomite near the contact with the country rock. The most abundant original mineral of the porphyritic rock is olivine now largely serpentinized as the result of extensive hydrothermal alteration at time of emplacement. The most common constituent of the fine-grained rock, which occurs near the border of the intrusive, is calcite. Mica is a common constituent of both types of rock, occurring as tufts or flakes. Magnetite makes up about 2 pct of the diatreme and occurs as small irregular grains or streaks of tiny grains. Singewald and Milton' have termed the rock of this body an "augite-free alnoite." Susceptibility measurements of pulverized specimens were made from selected samples taken from both the diatreme and the surrounding country rock. The susceptibility of the Bonneterre dolomite was found to be less than 40xlO-6 cgs (centimeter-gram-second) units and that of the metamorphosed contact dolomite less than 200x10-6 cgs. Measurements of individual samples of the igneous rock showed a wide variation in susceptibility between limits of 1000x10-6 cgs to 8000x10-6 cgs, with the maximum difference occuring in samples taken only a few feet apart. The maximum value was exhibited by a highly weathered sample taken from the northern outcrop, while minimum susceptibility was determined from a partially weathered sample taken only a few feet away. These extremes are believed to represent small local concentrations of stringers and grains of magnetite crystals in the igneous rock. A detailed magnetic survey of the horizontal and vertical components of the earth's magnetic field was made over the diatreme area. Stations were occupied at 20-ft intervals as shown by the grid on fig. 2. When greater detail was desired, intervening stations were also occupied. The field instruments were supplied by the Department of Geophysics, St. Louis University. The magnetometers are the Schmidt balance type constructed by the Ruska Instrument Co. Gas injection into liquid steel baths is widely practiced, ever since the early days of Bessemer’s pneumatic steelmaking process. What has not been fully appreciated is the critical role of bubble sizes for delivering higher quality commercial steels than is presently possible. This was first proposed by Prof P. Hayes and his research group. Using a full-scale water model of a typical 4-strand Ladle-Tundish-Mold system, we demonstrate the potential advantages of modifying a typical ladle shroud, to generate microbubbles within the water flowing into the tundish. This is possible by taking advantage of high shear rates and turbulence kinetic energy available in that region. These microbubbles enhanced the removal of “micro-inclusions” (hollow glass microspheres) in the 5–50 micron size range, to the upper surface of the tundish. There, they were absorbed into an overlaying “slag” phase. Accompanying CFD studies confirmed that no microbubbles in the size range generated (500–900 μm), pass through the submerged entry nozzles into the moulds.

The inadequacy of our knowledge of the coal combustion process has long been recognized. This was expressed very well by Spicer and Finney (1). "The control of combustion processes in industry and the design of the equipment necessary for efficient burning to take place have always been very much branches of an industrial art rather than of an exact science. This has been especially true of the utilization of coal, a substance so hetrogeneous and complex in character that all too little is known about its chemical and physical composition.' During the past several years one branch of coal utilization, that of high temperature carbonization; has made significant advances from being an art into being an exact science. This has been accomplished by the development of petrographic techniques for identifying, measuring, and determining the thermal properties of the organic materials which affect the carbonization of coal and the correlation of this information with a pre-existing standard of coke quality, the stability index.

A GREAT many industrial operations require the application of heat to carry on or complete processes, in which cases the temperatures must often be controlled within very narrow limits. For the lower temperatures, this control is not, as a rule, difficult as a number of types of reliable pyrometers are available for the work; for example, the mercury and resistance thermometers and the thermocouple. For temperatures above a red heat, thermocouples, platinum resistance thermometers, and total radiation and optical pyrometers may be used, depending on conditions. It is often undesirable, and sometimes impossible, to take temperatures of material by immersing the pyrometer in it or by placing the temperature-measuring device in a position in which it will attain the temperature of the material. The pyrometer may contaminate the product; the temperature may be so high that the pyrometer will not hold its calibration, clue to ineffectual protection and consequent contamination; the object may be inaccessible, as a lamp filament, etc. In such cases, a total radiation or optical pyrometer must be used. The disappearing-filament, or Morse, type of optical pyrometer works on the following principle: An objective lens, Fig. 1, focuses the image of the object whose temperature is desired in the plane of the lamp filament at F, which is at the principal focus of the ocular lens shown in the eye-piece. By this arrangement the eye will not have to accommodate itself first to the lamp filament and then to the object at a distance, and the lamp filament will appear superposed on the object. To balance the instrument, the current is adjusted by means of a rheostat until the tip of the lamp filament just disappears against the object as a background. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 show the appearance of the filament when too cold, too bright, and just balanced.

The Bureau of Mines studied the extraction of lithium from lithium-containing clays by chlorination with hydrogen chloride (HC1). In bench-scale laboratory investigations, HC1-H20 mixtures were used to selectively chlorinate lithium, but not calcium or magnesium, in lithium-containing clays. The addition of calcium carbonate to the clay was found to improve the lithium recovery. Reaction conditions found to affect the lithium recovery were ratio of clay to carbonate, reaction temperature, and HC1 concentration. The best conditions for selective chlorination of the lithium were 2:1 clay-carbonate, 750° C, and 20 wt-pct HC1. The experimental results and trends in lithium extraction are explained using thermodynamic relationships.
