The flowsheet of the hyd.rametallurgical zinc plant which is in use at Zhuzhou Smelters is described. The principal features of the process are fluid bed roasting, continuous calcine leaching, solution purification, zinc electrolysis, electrolyte cooling, and finally, the melting and casting of zinc forms. The Zhuzhou process for the flotation of silver from the leach residue collected on the Moor filters is described. The technical details of the process are outlined and the operating data are analyzed. The flotation facilities are described in detail and concentrate grades and recoveries are presented. The waelz process is used to concentrate In, Ge and Ga remaining in the leach residue after silver flotation. These elements subsequently are recovered by selective leaching in sulphuric acid, and details of this operation also are presented.

"Ductile Iron Piles (DIPs) are a proven, viable alternative to conventional piles, and for the past five years have been successfully used throughout New England. The installation process of DIPs lends itself to both large and small projects. Because of their installation efficiency they provide a substantial cost savings over drilled micro piles. Several New England projects (both end bearing and friction) will be evaluated, focusing on the installation and design procedures.BackgroundThe driven ductile cast iron pile (DIP) is a simple, fast and highly effective pile system. Over the last 30 years over 10 million feet of this pile system has been installed worldwide predominantly in Europe. DIPs are a prefabricated driven pile system utilizing high strength ductile iron pipes which are manufactured using a spun-cast process having outside diameters of 4 5/8” and 6 5/8 inches. The standard pile lengths are 16.4 feet long. The pipes are manufactured with a tapered socket with an internal shoulder for full engagement at the top and a tapered spigot at the bottom. The individual pile sections can be connected with this Plug and Drive® connection to drive a pile of any length.(see figure 1)The DIP system’s inherent advantage is the simplicity of the installation process. The piles are driven to refusal or to a required penetration depth with the use of a high-impact highfrequency hydraulic hammer (ie. Breaker hammer). In most applications the hydraulic hammer is mounted on an appropriately sized excavator (see Photo 2). At the completion of driving the pile, the pile is cut off (see photo 5) and the remaining section of pile is fitted with the appropriate driving shoe and serves as the lead section for the next pile. Being able to reuse the cut off section, yields minimal if any pile shaft waste. The pile is then fitted with an appropriate pile cap plate to receive the load from the superstructure."

"In this study, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal conductivity (TC) of shale in two perpendicular directions, vertical and parallel to the bedding of the rock, are firstly measured by experiment. The experimental results show that the CTE of the shale in the vertical direction is 1.69 times as much as that in the parallel direction, while the TC in the parallel direction is 1.83 times larger than that of the vertical direction. Based on the no initial strain assumptions, numerical simulations for the thermal cracking in shale are carried out with the obtained coefficients. Using finite element method and thermal-mechanical coupling theory, two fracture mechanical parameters, KI and J-integral of the shale are also analyzed for the shale thermal fracturing. The simulation results show that both KI and J-integral reach the maximum when the fracturing angle equals to 0° in the shale, namely parallel to the bedding direciton. It is also found that the two fracture parameters decrease with the fracturing angle increasing. Additionally, the thermal fracturing effect of the shale is evaluated under a given scenario. The study is significant for shale oil or gas recovery by in situ pyrolyzing method.INTRODUCTIONOil shale is regarded as a kind of unconventional resource that can contribute to production of shale oil and hydrocarbon gases (Rahm & Dianne, 2011). As is known that there is a large deposit of oil shale in China, and present technology for exploiting oil shale still concentrates on open-pit mining, obtaining shale oil by retorting shale on the ground (Li, Tang, Xue, Zheng, & Du, 2014; Qian, Yin, 2008). However, this technology has a bad effect on the environment and leads to severe resource waste for utilizing oil shale. Exploiting oil shale by in-situ method for ‘green mining’ is widely necessary in China (Kang, Wang, Cao, Liang, Chang, & Liu, 2013; Waters, Dean, Downie, Kerrihard, Austbo, & McPherson, 2009; Zoback, Kohli, Das, & McClure, 2012). One of effective method to exploit shale oil is heating oil shale in-situ underground. For instance, the in-situ conversion process (ICP technique) from Shell Company etc. used a direct heating method, and convectional heating oil shale underground by injecting superheated steam from Mining Technology Institute, Taiyuan University of Technology and constructing horizontal fracture in vertical wellbore from Chevron Company use indirect heating method (Chaudhary, Ehlig, & Wattenbarger, 2011; Hazra, Lee, Economides, & Moridis, 2013; Zhao et al., 2010). The convectional heating method contains complicated procedures with phase transition in double-media of fracture-matrix of oil shale subjected to multi-physical fields coupling including stress, fluid and temperature (Zhao et al., 2010). The characteristics of thermodynamics, solid mechanics and seepage of oil shale have been investigated separately (Hopkins, Rosen, & Hill,1998; Kang, Zhao, & Yang, 2008; Yang, Zhao, Kang, 2010; Zhao, Yang, Feng, Liang, & Kang, 2008; Zhao, Cao, Zhao, Lin, & Wang, 2008). However, it is quite difficult to solve constrained problem of each physical parameter in multi-physical fields coupling for oil shale pyrolysis."

THE Alaska Highway, in its course through British Columbia, traverses parts of two great physiographic divisions of Canada which are also distinctive geologically-the Cordillera in the western section and the Interior Plains in the eastern. The Cordilleran region in the portion of the Province with which this paper deals can be divided into four major northwest systems, known respectively from west to east as Coastal, Plateau, Cassiar-Omineca, and Rocky Mountains. The Coastal system consists solely of the Coast range except in the extreme northwest, where a part of the St. Elias range is included. The Coast range, characterized by mountains of great ruggedness,. is made up of an igneous complex of granitic rocks intruded chiefly as a great batholith. In places, spurs of these rocks extend into the Plateau heft, a partly mountainous tract largely occupied by quartzites, quartzose mica schists and their gneissic phases, and crystalline limestone with interbands and broad areas of chlorite, _hornblende, and sericite schists and bodies of intrusive granite gneiss-an assemblage of rocks known as the Yukon group. The Cassiar-Omineca system marks the divide between the Pacific and Arctic drainages. Its eastern boundary is well defined in the south by the Rocky Mountain Trench (see p. 229). The rocks of the system are, miainly, highly altered Palaeozoic sediments, but there are also Precambrian and Mesozoic rocks, the latter largely volcanic. The core of the system is granitic and there is evidence (see p. 221) to support the belief that it is of such a length as to constitute a batholith comparable to that of the Coastal system.

"The design of conveyor belting for use in mines poses problems to the manufacturer that are unique. The challenge to be met is that of the production of a conveyor belt which can withstand use and misuse in an environment that may differ vastly from one country to another, and even between one mine and its neighbour.The development of a product to meet such varying requirements necessitates a protracted program of trials, both in the laboratory and in the field; a new successful development, the only criterion, can be said to have been achieved only after very long-term usage under actual, deliberately chosen, arduous mining conditions.New developments in conveyor belt construction can never stop, no more than can developments in new and advanced mining techniques. A new problem is set-an answer must be found. Some of the problems are noted here, and answered where possible, in what must after all be little more than an excursion into a very comprehensive and detailed subject."

Tars paper is intended only to give a preliminary account of experiments made, and conclusions reached, concerning the treatment of certain refractory low-grade gold-ores, the profitable reduction of which may furnish a useful guide to the solution of similar mining and metallurgical problems, not only in the gold-bearing belt of the Southern United States, but perhaps in other regions also. It must be regarded as simply a ?report of progress," preceding a more elaborate and conclusive report of regular practice. The mines of the Hillabee Gold Mining Co. are located upon what is generally known locally as Hog Mountain, on the northern edge of Tallapoosa county, Ala., about 15 miles from Goodwater and 14 miles from Alexander City, stations on the Central of Georgia Railway. Gold has been known since 1839 to exist on this property, where it was discovered in that year by a man named Johnston. The property was worked for placer-gold by the old miners, and there are now the remains of four attempts to operate it by stamp-mill and plate-amalgamation. The present owners purchased it in 1896, and since that time they have experimented at frequent intervals, in order to devise a process that would satisfactorily recover the gold. In 1903 regular operations were begun. Geologically, the mountain consists of an intrusion of what has been pronounced true granite in altered sedimentary slates. The cooling of the granite produced shrinkage-cracks, which have become veins. There is considerable question as to the period of the slate formation; but it is undoubtedly, in my opinion, of Carboniferous age. The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine the feasibility of joining refractory metal compounds to each other and to oxide ceramics by a vacuum hot press-diffusion bonding method. Very satisfactory joins were made of ZrC to ZrB2, ZrN to ZrB2, ZrC to ZrN, and of ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 to Al203. Each of these join assemblies contained a mixture layer comprising 50 weight-percent each of the two end compounds. The mixture layer, sandwiched between each end compound, enhanced bonding and smoothed out the thermal expansion gradient between the two end members. Strength and thermal shock tests showed that the join areas of the ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 joins were stronger and more shock resistant than the parent materials. Also included in the joining tests was one each of TiC to TiB2, TiC to TiN, TiB2 to TIN, and TiC to ZrB2 joins. Each of these was well bonded, showing that the vacuum-hot-press method can be used for a variety of systems.

Compared with elsewhere in the world, New Zealand quarries have tended to be mostly small. The reasons for this are a combination of the relatively high transport costs, low population density and a pioneering, self-employed attitude. The small size of the operations is reflected in low productivity, a tendency to repair and rebuild equipment rather than replace it, designed flexibility in the processing plant, minimal reserves investigation or development planning and a versatile and innovative work force who are generally not professionally trained. The Resource Management Act and the Health, Safety and Employment Act as well as a customer driven demand for higher quality and consistent products will have even greater influence upon future direction of the Industry. The trend will be towards fewer quarries operated by companies and professional managers that can adapt to the new demands.

POSCO installed a new 100 ton oxygen bottom-blown converter in 2013 for the development of new steelmaking process named as PS-BOP which is reading POSCO-Saarstahl Basic Oxygen Process. This process was developed by the collaboration research between POSCO and Saarstahl AG in Germany that is based on substantial increase of CO post combustion in a converter by blowing hot air from the top of converter. The collaboration research has been finished successfully in November 2013 with 17% decrease in hot metal ratio (HMR) when hot air was blown from the top of the oxygen bottom-blown converter. After the collaboration research the converter has been tried to be operated as oxygen top and bottom-blown converter to reduce bottom wear and to decrease production cost with increased use of low cost Fe source by the help of increased CO post combustion. The presentation includes experience on the start up of oxygen bottom-blown converter, HMR reduction trials with hot air top blowing and transition from oxygen bottom-blown to top and bottom-blown converter operation.

Canada and the United states are both developed countries with economies which are extremely dependant on oil. Canada exports 37% of its production (to the United states) and imports 35% of its consumption (mainly into Eastern Canada), making the country self-sufficient in oil. Canada is attempting to increase its oil production so as to simultaneously reduce its dependence on foreign oil while producing more oil for export. The United states -imports no less than 50% of its total consumption of 17 million barrels/day. Canada's exports to the United states form only 7% of the United States total imports. The United States would clearly prefer to achieve self-sufficiency in oil. Consequently both countries are dependent on foreign oil. The united States is however in the sensitive situation of depending, for its imports, on countries which are susceptible to destabilizing political events. It is the author's hypothesis that recent developments in underground oil recovery from the Athabasca oil Sands of Alberta may well, for both countries, form part of the solution to these problems.

The results of "submerged arc" electric furnace processing of a variety of materials is discussed with respect to the process and products, including the characteristics of the products (e.g. TCLP or Toxicity Characteristics Leaching Procedure). The materials melted include slags and wastes containing various metal oxides including copper, tin, lead, zinc, chrome, nickel and other associated elements. The findings of these tests are compared to those reported in the literature for other operations treating similar "wastes".

"Early in World War II it became apparent that the known bauxite re- serves might not be adequate to supply the demands of the American aluminum-producing industry, as the transportation of bauxite from abroad to this country might easily be interfered with by hostile action. Consequently, the Bureau of Mines set up an intensive, well-integrated program for the production of cell-grade alumina from low-grade domestic ores. This pro-gram of investigation covered the production of alumina from clay, alumite, red mud, and other low- and marginal-grade ores. In line with the Bureau's usual policy of conservation of natural resources, it was decided that the investigation should be extended to cover the production of alumina and other valuable byproducts from aluminum dross.Statistical information showed that during the year 1943-44, an average of 2,900 tons of aluminum dross was generated monthly. This dross, after partial removal of free metal, had an average metallic aluminum content of approximately 9 percent. Some of this dross was produced by the melting of alloyed aluminum; but a large proportion 1,700 out of 2,900 tons - was generated by two producers of primary aluminum, and the dross did not contain an great proportion of alloying metals. Compared with dross from other sources, this 60 percent of the country's capacity can be assumed to have relatively uniform composition. Moreovcr, the problem of collection and distribution can be minimized because of the relatively small number of plants included in the organization of these two producers of virgin metal.Except for large pieces of metallic aluminum that easily can be mechanically separated for remelting, this dross has been discarded and scrapped. Inasmuch as chemical analyses show that the alumina content of dross is far higher-than ordinary ores - 111 percent alumina equivalent in dross compared to 57 percent alumina in bauxite - aluminum dross is a far richer source of aluminum than any known naturally occurring ores. The discard, of this waste material during the war and reconversion periods would be unsound economically. The work reported herein describes tests at the College Park Station of the Bureau of Mines on the recovery of metal, alumina, ammonia, methane, and abrasive-grade corundum from dross."

Slurry flow, including flow through the charge, through the discharge grates, along the pulp lifters and its discharge from the mill is an important contributor to the efficiency of the grinding process within a SAG mill. Poor transport of finer ground material can adversely affect grinding leading to excess energy consumption and over-grinding of fine material. This paper extends a 1-way coupled DEM-SPH method to three dimensions and applies it to a 1.8 m diameter by 0.6 m long AG/SAG pilot mill. This provides detailed information on the internal flow of slurry within a SAG mill, including the prediction of dry regions and of slurry pooling. Full 3D analysis also allows the pulp flow patterns into and out of the mill via pulp lifter chamber to be investigated.

The Garfield Mine is a legacy vanadium mine in western Colorado with multiple mine openings, waste rock piles, and adit seepages that Cyprus Climax Metals Company (a Freeport-McMoRan Inc. subsidiary) voluntarily remediated through the Colorado Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCUP). The process to obtain a No Further Action determination from the VCUP is presented. Water treatment of the adit discharge, which is not part of the VCUP, is also presented. The remedial action objectives (RAOs) included preventing direct human or biotic exposure to the waste rock and radiation emitting from the waste rock; reducing metal concentrations and radionuclide activities in adit discharge and keeping the discharge from leaving the site; maintaining the existing undeveloped character of the surrounding landscape; and eliminating the need for a stormwater permit. The design included regrading, installation of an infiltration barrier and rock cover, a diversion channel, and a biologically based passive remediation water treatment system. An initial lab-scale evaluation provided design criteria for the full-scale system, which consists of a sulfate-reducing biochemical reactor and post-treatment aerobic polishing cells. The system has been operational since construction was completed in late 2016. Results indicate that the treatment objective of 90% bulk removal of constituents of potential concern (COPCs) is largely being met. The system also provides year-round operation and non-point discharge of effluent. After 20 plus years of site investigations, the remedial action was completed in 2016 with all RAOs met and a No Further Action determination granted in 2018. INTRODUCTION The Garfield Mine is a legacy vanadium mine located approximately 11 miles north-northeast of Rifle, in Garfield County, Colorado. It was leased and operated intermittently from 1929 to 1975 but was never operated by Cyprus Climax Metals Company (Cyprus) (a Freeport-McMoRan Inc. subsidiary). Prior to reclamation, site features included: • six mine openings—five adits and a vertical opening; • two adits discharging mining-influenced water (MIW)— Adit 1 at less than 4 liters per minute (L/min) and Adit 2 at 7 to 10 L/min; • main waste rock pile (13,500 m3) and small waste rock pile (minimal volume); • debris (small structure, mattress, bottles, shells, etc.) indicating site used for recreational purposes; and, • unimproved road, which has been used to access forest fires.

High production rate and good stability demand the optimization of all phases of electric pig iron smelting. This is important with respect to slag chemistry, which to a large extent regulates the process temperature in electric smelting. Controlled basicity and slag volume. and a satisfactory screen analysis of the reduction material and sinter, are of the utmost importance for smooth furnace operation. Large variations in slag volume and in B/ A and C/Fe ratio will have an influence on the furnace resistance and thus the specific energy development in the furnace, which lead to variable reduction of SiO.. The result will be variable hot -metal quality and un-stable furnace operation.

The work described in this paper is sponsored by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of accelerating the drilling of roof bolt holes and reducing the quantity of materials needed to fill each hole. A high-speed, small-hole drill has been fabricated and tested in the laboratory. High Priority has been given to safety, reliability, and compatibility with underground coal mining practice. The combination of drag bits and erosion jets is designed for high penetration rate, long wear life, and uniform hole size in a variety of sedimentary strata. A reliable high-pressure, high-speed swivel feeds water to the bit at about 4 L/min (1 gpm). The duplex hydraulic intensifier which drives the jets has a 40-kW (30-hp) capacity. Results of recent full-scale laboratory testing (Now. 1977) are presented.

The Bureau of Mines conducted corrosion tests of 18 commercial alloys in H3 P04 -phosphate rock or A1,03 slurry, in 10 pct HF, and in 25 pct H2 SiF6 to simulate three environments anticipated in a Bureau process to extract fluoride values from phosphate rock. Small alloy coupons were rotated in duplicate tests at 4.4 to 21 fps in the slurry at 170° C to determine rates of erosion-corrosion. At 4.4 fps the lowest rates, in mils penetration per year (mpy), were measured for Hastelloy C-276 (<20), Hastelloy B (30), and Inconel 625 (150);the rates increased at 21 fps to 55 mpy, 45 mpy, and 1,000 mpy, respectively. The corrosion rate for all alloys exceeded 40 mpy in either the equilibrium vapor or liquid phases of aqueous solutions containing 10 pct HF or 25 pct H2SiF6 at 100° C. Uniform corrosion in 10 pct HF at 50° C was observed only for Inconel 625 (22 mpy), Hastelloy C-276 (43 mpy), and Illium 98 (17 mpy). Inconel 625 (0.75 mpy), Hastelloy C-276 (1.3 mpy), Illium 98 (1.7 mpy), and Incoloy 825 (0.45 mpy) were attacked uniformly in 25 pct H2SiF6 at 50° C.

(communication to the Secretary*):— Formerly it was the general practice of engineers to designate coal that is free from moisture and ash as " combustible," notwithstandirig that it contains oxygen and nitrogen. The origin of this practice was more particularly due to the requirements in connection with boiler-testing, which demanded a consideration of that portion of the fuel which took part in the combuition-process because results based on a unit of either moist or dry coal were not comparable, since both moisture and ash were recognized as variable quantities. Thus, a pound of " combustible " became a standard of value, and was treated as a constant before employing measurements of heating-power and calculating therefrom the percentage of efficiency. The recognition of this term " combustible " was an advance to be credited to the engineer rather than to the chemist, because the latter, not having to do with the interpretation of analyses in practice outside the laboratory, usually saw no reason for reporting results in terms other than those of the moist-coal composition. Some years ago I needed a table of fuel-composition in terms of moist, dry, moisture-free and ash-free coal, and of the combustible components. This table required the use of the word combustible in its proper sense, for the purpose of designating carbon, hydrogen, and sulphur, instead of including these three elements with oxygen and nitrogen, to which aggregate the term combustible was formerly applied. To make such a tabulation involved either the use of the inconvenient and cumbersome term, "ash- and moisture-free coal," or of some other representative term, and for this purpose I adopted the expression pure coal, which is short, simple, convenient, and technically correct. Evaluation of the construction method used for the pedestrian underpass construction at Ipswich Road, Brisbane, Australia is presented in this paper. The pedestrian underpass was constructed through the existing railway embankment between Harrogate and O’Keefe Streets on the eastern side of Ipswich Road. This underpass construction is part of the CLEM7 tunnel project (formerly known as the North-South Bypass Tunnel) which is the longest toll road in Australia at a total length of 6.8 km. The jacked box construction technique was initially identified as a preferred option during the tender and concept design phases. However at the final design stage, the cut and cover technique was selected as this method can reduce the construction time and cost significantly. The design and construction teams effectively managed the challenges, complexities and risks associated with undertaking cut and cover tunnel through the existing heavily utilised rail embankment. The on-site construction time for the underpass using the cut and cover technique was reduced to less than 42 hours.
