There are many methods developed for measuring the crustal stress in China. Among them only two methods have been adopted in practice, i.e., overcoring method (for which the sensors include: Piezo-magnetic stress gauge, steel-ring strain cell, 3-dimensional hollow-inclusion stress ,gauge, and Leeman's-like stress gauge) and hydraulic fracturing method. For the former method, one of those sensors is installed in a borehole, 36 mm in diameter, then prestressed, and finally overcored with a drill bit of 130 mm in diameter. After that the deformation of the borehole wall is measured, from which the in-situ stresses are determined. In order to avoid the errors resulting from the difference in elastic modulus for various kinds of rocks as well as from the installment of the cells, we have developed a technique to calibrate the sensor on-spot using a confining pressure calibrator and produced a very good result. For the later method, the measurements are achieved by isolating a certain section of a borehole and then injecting water to pressurize it till a tensile break is induced. It is identical to the typical technology used internationally. For many years, through field observations and a large number of laboratory experiments, we believe that the most efficient way of stress measurement for engineering purposes is the overcoring method using Piezo-magnetic stress gauge. It is characterized by stable and reliable measurement values, high accuracy and high adaptability. Taking the measurements in the intact rock mass as an example, the measured stress magnitudes are within accuracies of 8% and the errors in orientation are about 5 degrees. It can even be used perfectly in deep water. Up to now, we have performed in-situ stress measurements in more than 70 sites and obtain more than one thousand sets of data. The deepest depth used in the overcoring method is 80 m in vertical borehole and 780 m in tunnels.

The observed progress in technology of non-ferrous ores enrichment and condition of machines and equipment in the ores concentrators on the one hand have brought a possibility and on the other resulted in necessity for introduction of modernization actions. Positive results of investigations into influence of chemical modification of selected products of enrichment process on copper ores enrichment results gave possibility for implementation of chemical-flotation technologies of ores enrichment. The substantial development in flotation machines structure has contributed to modernization of flotation process resulting in increase of enrichment efficiency. The paper presents the idea and results of chemical modification of difficult in enrichment semi-products in the technology of copper ores enrichment and the results obtained after application of the modernised technology. The structure of large-volume flotation machines used in various stages of flotation and current situation in modernization of flotation process in copper ores concentrators are also described. The paper presents industrial-scale results of flotation after application of modified flotation reagents of collector group. Introduction of modifiers into the widely used xanthates resulted in increase of copper recovery in concentrate.

Thickening is an essential process in the mining industry and currently one of the most costeffective technologies for recovering water from tailings streams. Improved performance of thickeners can lead to significant energy savings, and increased recovery of water close to the mill. Its performance is directly affected by the rheological properties of slurry at the raking zone. To further understand the dynamics of slurry inside thickeners, a multiphase particle-in-cell method (MP-PIC), is used to investigate its behaviour on a sliding channel. Parameters like particle-size distribution (PSD), rheological properties, and domain discretisation were benchmarked to study its influence on highly dense flows. The slurry concentration by weight of the samples ranged between 60 to 70% of solids by mass, under which conditions it is known to behave like a non-newtonian fluid. An experimental flume, 0.2 m wide and 2 m long, was used for validation under different angles and slurry composition. Visual analysis of the slurry height and shape, as well as velocity measurements, were compared with numerical data. The preliminary results show the ability of MP-PIC method to represent different types of highly dense flows, while still being computationally affordable and practical for industrial use. From a macro business process perspective, if what we do in the Mining Industry is find material, dig it out of the ground, convert it to a product and sell it, we are in what might be considered a "simple business". If it is so simple, where does information technology fit? How does it affect our industry? Is it a strategic tool for our industry? What approach should we be employing to ensure we are utilizing information technology effectively? How is information technology integrated or tied together with other areas in the organization such as process control? What kind of people and skill sets are required to support the whole area of information technology? What effect does information technology and automation have on streamlining and rethinking the way we do business in the 90's. This paper covers how these areas have been addressed within the Noranda Group of Companies. It reviews how information technology has evolved, the approach, and what effect it has had on a diversified natural resources company in the mining and metals, forest products, and oil and gas industries.

The idea of automatic or remote control of the mine ventilation process generally, and methane concentration particularly, attracts the attention of mining engineers more and more. The advantages of introducing mine ventilation control systems are breaking traditional reluctance. The change of attitude is not only because of the requirements of modern exploitation technology, but it is also due to the recent progress in development and successful introduction of reliable monitoring systems and actuators in the form of controlled ventilators and doors [1]; [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. Many 'years of theoretical and experimental studies of the dynamics of mine ventilation processes created the needed base for a proper design of an automatic control system [7],[8],[9], [10]. From these studies must, however, be drawn a fundamental conclusion, which may be regarded as the motto of this paper: An automatic control system for mine ventilation ill-conditioned or improperly designed is capable of creating hazard situations in response to random disturbances, much more, severe in consequence than a traditional ventilation system without any automatic or remote control! This statement is easy to prove if the dynamic properties of the ventilation process are taken into consideration. The ventilation process, as a matter of fact, is described by non-linear equations, and it must be expected that the process has more than one state of equilibrium. In other words, in the ventilation process may exist not only one but also more than one steady-states of flow, of which some are stable and others unstable. In certain circumstances, there may be no steady-state at all, and the process will oscillate [8], [11] , [12] . The state of flow in a network tends towards a steady-state and the actual steady-state established will depend on the initial conditions or disturbances in flow (fire,. etc.), which steady-state from the total number that will be . We frequently observe jumps from one steady-state to another. Disturbances in flow conditions which may cause such transitions are events of random character, occurring very rarely. Concluding, it must be stressed that there has to be a control system adjusted to the ventilation process in order to avoid situations mentioned above. There is only one alternative available and suitable for examination or study of the dynamics of a given mine ventilation problem: either by continuous monitoring of the real process, or numerical simulation of the process using a mathematical model. The advantages of the second method are obvious. This method allows consideration of every possible case very quickly and cheaply in relation to the first method. The aim of the paper is to show again that the simulation of the mine ventilation process and particularly a methane concentration process, separately or combined together with a control system, are real possibilities. A simulation method requires precise specification of the problem under consideration. For example, if we intend to examine a methane-concentration control system, the following items have to be specified: - expected target function of the control system. - structure of the control system. - mathematical model of control system, including sensor system, data preparation system, controllers, decision routine, regulators, etc. - structure of mine ventilation network. - mathematical model of ventilation process, including air flow and methane concentration processes. - pattern of disturbances which may occur in the controlled process as well as initial conditions on a 'start-up' of the system. Using typical computer programs for numerical solution of equations in the mathematical model of the problem involved, we are able, within the adequacy of the model, to simulate every case specified by the disturbances and initial conditions. As a result of simulation, it is expected that the following parameters could be defined: - transient flow in the network. - transient state of methane concentration in working areas. - stability of flow and methane concent¬ration. - stability of the control system. - range of control. - efficiency of control, etc. It is obvious that simulation methods readily allow for modifications to existing systems such that desired results will be obtained. The role of geology in coal exploration, mine planning and mine development has, in the past, been relatively small. The primary reason for this lies in. the simplicity of geologic concepts that were necessary to bring these operations about. These concepts can be briefly stated as follows: 1) coal occurs in the beds or layers and is overlain and underlain by shales, sandstone or limestone in varying porportions, 2) each coal bed has been given a name and certain quality characteristics can often be associated with a named bed and 3) coal beds (and their adjoining rocks) are often folded into broad anticlines or synclines and, in some places, displaced or faulted. In actual practice, however, these simple principles have been found wanting. Thickening, thinning, pinch outs or changes in coal quality occurred but the occurrence was apparently unpredictable and the only real solution to such problems seemed to be practice and experience. This combined with ingeneous engineering solutions have provided answers to most questions. Perhaps a more fundamental reason that geology could offer so little input to coal mining is that the thickest, most persistant and best quality coal seams followed the above stated rules fairly well. In many areas, however, such seams are now nearing exhaustion and the increased demand for clean, non-polluting, safe energy is quickly bringing a need for techniques of exploration and mining procedures that will make development of formerly unminable seams a profitable venture. For the past 20 years some considerable body of knowledge has been added to the framework of the geology of sedimentary rocks and it is the purpose of this paper to present some of these newer ideas that will be useful in solving some of the present problems of coal exploration and development.

The formation in Newmont Mining?s Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, NV contains high levels of abrasive quartzite as well as gold, copper and silver. Newmont started mining operations at Phoenix (formerly Battle Mountain Gold) three years ago and the planners knew they were working with a challenging geological formation. But as it turned out, it was more challenging than anticipated. Mine manager Mark Evatz said, ?Anything that touches Phoenix rock wears fast. The rock fights back here.? To contend with the hard conditions, Newmont uses Atlas Copco?s Pit Viper 271 (PV-271) blasthole drill. Because of the hardness of the rock, drilling at Phoenix requires hammer drilling and the mine uses Atlas Copco TD65 hammers with 171 mm (6.75 in.) bits. The mine?s PV-271?s are outfitted with a single 41 m3/min (1450 cfm), 2.4 MPa (350 psi), oil-flooded air compressor. Phoenix has six Atlas Copco PV-271 drill rigs plus an Atlas Copco DML and a DM45 midrange blasthole rig. The mine?s goal is to keep 3.6 Mt (4 million st) of muck in inventory to stay ahead of the shovels and support needed operational flexibility (ore control related). Drilling efficiency has been a continuous point of improvement since operations began at the mine. The single-pass depth capability of 16.5 m (55 ft) on the PV-271 helped with that. Originally, the plans called for 6-m (20-ft) bench heights, supported by 7-m (23-ft) drill depths, and time spent moving from hole to hole was eating up productivity. Drilling on that plan resulted in drilling an average of 14 m/h (47 ft/hour). When depths were changed to 13-m (44-ft) drill depth, supporting blasting of 12-m (40-ft) benches, they were able to use the single pass capacity of the PV-271. Performance increased to more than 18 m/h (60-ft/hour) an hour. Although the drill depth change largely supported the improvement, other aspects of continuous improvement associated with improved knowledge of the Pit Viper drills helped as well.

The leaching processes and mechanisms of weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth (RE) ores with ammonium sulfate were investigated for their high efficiency and low consumption exploitation. The leaching process is a typical reversible heterogeneous ion exchange reaction in liquid–solid systems. The raw ore and leached tailings were analyzed by SEM and FTIR. Results indicated that no dissolution or structural changes of the ores occurred during the leaching process. The migrations of RE3+, Al3+, and NHþ 4 in the leaching process were studied under various liquid–solid ratios. With increasing liquid–solid ratio, the content of NHþ 4 adsorbed on clay mineral by physical effect decreased, NHþ 4 adsorbed by ion-exchange increased, and the content of exchanged RE and Al increased until reaching equilibrium. The adsorption capacity of the RE ores for NHþ 4 remained about 0.61–0.63 mg/g. It was difficult to desorb NHþ 4 from RE ores with washing water alone. The leaching mechanism of Al was the same as RE, but the leaching of Al slightly lagged behind RE. At the optimal liquid–solid ratio of 0.4:1, the leaching efficiencies of RE and Al were 95.51% and 90.99%, respectively, and 56.65% of NHþ 4 remained in the leachate. After impurity removal and RE precipitation, the leachate can be reused by replenishing fresh leaching agent. The aim of this study is to enhance the leaching process of RE, restrain the leaching of impurities, and decrease the consumption of leaching agents.

United States metals and non-metallic minerals manufacturing consume about 5,000 trillion Btu annually. Various studies estimate that as much as 20 to 50 percent of this energy is lost as excess or waste heat. Recovery of waste heat can conserve energy, reduce operating costs, and lower environmental emissions. It would be valuable to quantify recoverable waste heat sources and identify the barriers that hinder its recovery. This paper provides an overview of waste heat losses specific to high temperature processes in primary metals and minerals manufacturing. It summarizes findings from a broader study conducted for the Department of Energy Industrial Technologies Program; the study evaluates energy losses, recovery practices and opportunities, and R & D needs for waste heat technology development.

In this paper High Pressure Grinding Rolls(HPGR) was utilized to pretreat CVRD southern specular hematite for enhancing the pelletization of the refractory hematite. The process parameters of HPGR, balling and firing were optimized, and the mechanism of HPGR was demonstrated by determining the surface activity by means of Blaine specific surface area tester, laser size analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM),X-ray diffraction (XRD), micro calorimeter and pelletability index. It is shown that the pelletization of the refractory hematite was greatly improved. The drop strength of green balls increases from 3.4 times to 13.6 times from 0.5m height while the bentonite dosage decreases from 2.2% to 1.3%.The compressive strength of roasted pellets also reaches 2500N/pellet. The mechanism of the pretreatment of CVRD southern specular hematite concentrates by HPGR is revealed that the surface activity is improved by an increases in specific surface area and the amount of micron size fractions, and higher lattice deformation and defects due to the fractures occurring inside particles during static pressure comminution, resulting in more wetting enthalpy, higher pelletability index and good property of roasting.

The Bureau of Mines subjected two manufacturers' chemical oxygen (K02) self-rescue breathing apparatus to a series of laboratory environmental treatments designed to simulate various conditions in underground coal mines. The environmental treatments consisted of extremes of temperature, shock, and vibration. The tests were designed to be used as predictors of the ability of the self-rescuers to survive those environmental insults with no degradation in their protection to the wearer. Based on the severity of the treatments, simulating conditions more severe than offered by the mining environment, the two apparatus tested should be able to withstand the abuse offered by the mining environment and still function as intended in an emergency. Correlation of these tests with results of long-term field evaluations is needed to provide confidence in the laboratory tests as predictors.

Slate possesses many admirable qualities, not only as a roofing material, but for blackboards, electrical switch boards, and for various structural uses such as stair trends, floor tile, baseboards, and sanitary enclosures. The American slate industry was established manor years ago, and has made remarkable progress, particularly during the past five years. One of the chief drawbacks to more rapid expansion is the high percentage of waste which reaches 75 to 94 per cent of gross production. Much of this waste is duo to rock imperfections over which man has no control, but a careful study of tae industry by the Bureau of Mines over a period of years indicates that an undesirably large percentage of the marketable slate is wasted in the processes of quarrying and manufacture. The initial step in quarrying slate is to separate from the solid ledge masses of a size that ray be conveniently removed from the quarry. This first step entails a greater waste of material than any subsequent process, and, therefore, invites the most earnest effort toward waste reduction. Attention has consequently been directed toward possible improvements in methods of making primary cuts in the quarry floor. A study of European practice with the wire saw, together with theoretical consideration of its advantages, convinced the writer that it possessed sufficient merit to justify its use as a primary slate cutter in American quarries. No practical conclusion in this matter could be reached except by experiment. Therefore, the desirability of obtaining equipment and trying it out under actual conditions of operation was urged upon operators. While no doubt the equipment could be readily manufactured in America, it had already been developed to the point of practical use in Europe; therefore the writer urged the desirability of purchasing one completely equipped wire saw in Europe, and determining through tests whether it gave sufficient promise of success to warrant its manufacture in America.

"Gas management has always been a major concern for the ventilation officer of any gassy mine. With an increase of mining depth and gas content, there is a great demand for the development of in-seam drilling sites where boreholes can be drilled for the pre-drainage of gas prior to longwall operation. The ventilation and gas management in the drilling site therefore becomes a critical component of mine safety. In this study, advanced computational fluid dynamics technology was adopted to investigate the aerodynamics of gas emitting from the drilling site and boreholes during normal drilling and, in the case of a sudden gas inrush, from the borehole. In addition, the impact of different ventilation controls on gas removal in the drilling site was investigated. Modelling results indicate that gas accumulation zones could be formed if the ventilation system fails to deliver sufficient airflow to the drill site, especially when a sudden gas inrush from a borehole occurs. The configurations of brattice, layout of ventilation tubes and the gas emission rate all have a significant effect on the gas distribution. Due to variations in site-specific conditions, it would be desirable to conduct modelling studies to assess the effects and efficiencies of a ventilation design for the varying environment on-site before carrying out drilling practice. Laboratory experiments have been performed to evaluate the kinetics of roasting pyrite and arsenopyrite in air at elevated temperatures, in the presence of lime. The effects of temperature, time, air flow rate, particle size, lime type, and mineral/lime weight ratio on the rates of oxidation, lime sulfation, and lime arsenation were studied. The reaction products were identified using chemical analysis, x-ray diffraction, SEM analysis, and optical microscopy. The results are discussed in terms of the utilization of lime to capture sulfur and arsenic during the roasting of refractory precious metal concentrates. More than 99.9% of the arsenic and 98% of the sulfur are contained when roasting pyrite and arsenopyrite with hydrated lime under typical roasting conditions.

Nabarlek is situated in the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve about 270 km due east of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. During the dry season (May to November) Nabarlek is accessible from Darwin over the Arnhem Highway-- a distance of 330 km. Throughout the wet season (December to April), except for a few days, access is provided by aircraft from Darwin to the Nabarlek airstrip. Because of the limited access during the wet season, reagents and supplies have to be stock- piled for six months on the site to maintain operations. With the mine and plant being remotely located on private Arnhem land with very limited access outside the site fence, operating personnel are flown to Darwin every six days for their days off.

Many factors enter into the efficient operation of the reciprocating type of gravity concentrator. Earlier investigators who studied these factor invariably used natural (crushed ore) products for their experiments, but in the present study synthetic products were used. The variables considered were (1) specific gravity of the sand grains, (2) size of sand drains, and (3) shape of sand grains comprising the table feeds. It is recognized, also, that the percentage relationship of the different kinds of grains is a factor affecting results. This factor is variable in one group of experiments but is thereafter kept constant.

"From preliminary investigations it has been observed that although evaporation losses may be estimated by comparing single values of certain physical properties of crude oils and their evaporation residues, such techniques possess little accuracy unless both the evaporation process and the variation of the property as a function of the process are completely known. The accuracy of estimation may be increased somewhat through the comparison of property mid-per-cent curves. Further increases in accuracy are possible if bottoms yield •curves rather than mid-percent curves are used. The use of both the mid-percent and bottoms yield curves however involves a prohibitive amount of effort in most cases. Examinations of distillation bottoms from Hempel type distillations carried to end points just short of the cracking point have indicated that these bottoms are not appreciably affected by the evaporation process. It was further observed that bottoms of identical API gravity, obtained from a crude oil and its evaporation residues behave as if they were pure components which were unaffected by evaporation. Based on these observations Hempel distillation bottoms of equal API gravity were obtained for a crude oil and its various evaporation residues from API gravity bottoms yield curves. The volume percent of these bottoms in the crude oil and its residues were used to calculate the evaporation losses suffered by the crude in order to yield the various residues. The results indicate that, although further refinements in technique are required, it is possible to calculate evaporation losses with an accept-able degree of accuracy through the use of this method."

The Guymard mine in Orange County, N. Y., is reported to have been discovered in 1862 and mined until 1876, producing 10,000 tons of lead and zinc ore. The property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in 1948. Development work was done by the Bureau in April and May 1949 and March 1950. During these two periods four drill holes totaling 2,090 feet were completed. The mineralized sections of the core were sampled and assayed.
