Many people consider the mining of coal to be an extremely hazardous occupation; but it should be remembered that most large industries have to meet special conditions which, if not dealt with properly, might become hazards to life and property. Mining men may not always be fully aware that some practices and certain equipment that is incorrectly designed or maintained can lead to dangerous conditions. In endeavoring to help the coal-mining industry to prevent accidents and disasters, the Bureau of Mines has engaged in a program of education on conditions and practices that must be avoided. An effective way to teach safety is by visual demonstration. For example, it is generally known that certain kinds of electrical flashes have ignited explosive atmospheres in mines, but actually to see and hear explosions caused by electrical sparks of different size and character under laboratory control is likely to teach a much more emphatic and lasting lesson than would be learned by merely reading about them. The interest manifested by those who witness the demonstrations seems to prove that this is true. The purpose of the demonstrations is not to discourage the use of electricity in mines, but rather to indicate what types of equipment (including some generally regarded as harmless) can ignite gas and what safeguards have been developed to prevent such ignitions. It is hoped that this information will improve the ability of mining men to cope with underground hazards.

AN appraisal of the activities of the mining geologists during 1936 clearly indicates the ever in- creasing utilization of geology in the search for ore. Few men with geo- logic training are idle at present; this is particularly true regarding recent graduates. Many have accepted employment in distant fields, such as the Philippines and South America, and greatly increased mineral production from these places reflects their activities. In North America, regions of intense mineralization formerly important are being restudied in greater de- tail and with better understanding; as a result, new mineral wealth is being found in many such districts. Much is being done by private companies and individuals, and it is to be hoped that mining companies will increasingly make available the purely scientific results of such studies by permitting their geologists to publish. On such generosity to a large extent will future advances in ore finding depend.

Se desarrollaron materiales compuestos de matriz polimérica para toberas en cohetes; con dos zonas: una térmica para soportar elevadas temperaturas de combustión y una estructural que resista los esfuerzos generados. La zona térmica se elaboró con materiales de comportamiento ablativo, probados a temperaturas de hasta 2950°C durante dos minutos, los cuales fueron reforzados con polvo cerámico y/o subproducto de la industria siderúrgica (cerámico 2). Con base en los resultados obtenidos del comportamiento de térmico y de conductividad térmica del material ablativo, se construyó la zona estructural en materiales compuestos fibroreforzados (vidrio y carbono) con matriz polimérica. Los moldes se diseñaron en SolidWorks y se fabricaron por prototipado en ABS rápido y se elaboraron machos disgregables en poliuretano. En la zona térmica se usó un procedimiento de vaciado con vibración con diferentes tipos de matrices (poliéster, vinilester, caucho silicona) y de laminación para la zona estructural. Se evaluó el desempeño mediante simulación de las condiciones reales de operación mediante llama de oxicorte y quemador de ACPM, observando el efecto en la pérdida de peso, espesor, diferencial de temperatura, cambio de propiedades mecánicas, etc.; encontrándose un positivo comportamiento del sistema con matriz de resina vinilester reforzado con polvo cerámico 1 y buenos resultados con cerámico 2, así como una estabilidad en la zona estructural construida con fibras de vidrio y carbono. "Half of the input energy to aluminum reduction cell will be lost as waste heat which could be studied for possible recovery. Since price of energy is increasing and the main production cost in primary aluminum industry is energy, so waste heat recovery consideration will be interesting. One of the possible choices for recovering is from aluminum exhaust gases that needs minimum modifications for reduction cell and has no influence on cell heat balance which is vital for the operation. By using heat exchangers with in-line and staggered tube arrangements which placed before fume treatment plant (FTP) we will be able to recover enough amount of heat. The main challenging problem which is necessary to overcome will be the heat exchanger material and its design because of corrosive and dusty exhaust gases from potroom. In this paper, a desalination system with six effects of evaporator is proposed for producing distilled water by using recovered heat from hot exhaust gases. The calculated amount of produced distilled water is around 27,000 / in this specific suggested desalination plant. The suggested desalination plant is based on Hormozgan Aluminum Company data (Hormozal) in Bandar Abbas, Iran which is constructed by the Persian Gulf.IntroductionWaste heat losses arise both from equipment inefficiencies and from thermodynamic limitations on processes. The exact quantity of industrial waste heat is poorly quantified, but various studies have estimated that as much as 20 to 50% of industrial energy consumption is ultimately discharged as waste heat [1]. In order to achieve a final decision for establishing the waste heat recovery plant in any type of industry, a strong feasibility study is mandatory. Also, we need to remember that the possible amounts of energy and suggested process plant for recovery have to be investigated before starting any feasibility study. This kind of study which is important to be finished before moving to feasibility step is mainly a theoretical study, and was done for the Hormozgan Aluminum Company (Hormozal). In addition to the exhaust gases from the potroom, the exhaust gases from anode baking plant appear to have a better potential for waste heat recovery compared to potroom exhaust gases. The average temperature of exhaust gases from anode baking kiln is 120°C higher than the exhaust gases temperature in the potroom. This needs further investigation in a different study, because this study is just focusing on potroom exhaust gases."

"The inlet air velocity profile of any surface mine ventilation fan is an important factor when designing the connecting ductwork from the mine shaft collar to the fan. Deficient fan performance can be the result of ductwork that adds unnecessary pressure loss and/or adversely influences the fan inlet air conditions (velocity profile). The need for optimized inlet air conditions begins with discussing the process of performance testing during the development of the fan performance curve. Additional discussions include design of the shaft collar connection and the connecting ductwork. A preferred design of ductwork for parallel fan installations will be illustrated.INTRODUCTIONThe inlet air velocity profile of any surface installed mine ventilation fan is one of the most important factors to consider when designing the connecting ductwork from the mine shaft collar to the fan. The massive application of electrical and electronic equipments increased the production and industry development, which leads to a rising envronmental and economic problem: the increase of e-waste’s generation. The main cause to explain this problem is the combination between the diversification of electric and electronic device’s applications and programmed obsolescence, which promotes a high generation the so-called waste electrical and electronic equipments (WEEE). Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are present in almost all WEEE and their heterogenous composition have a considerable amount of metals, including some preciousones. It is necessary to think about viable alternatives for the destination of WEEE, mostly PCBs’. Recycling is an environmental friendly purpose for PCBs’ destination, combined with economic advantage from the recovery of metals. The choice of correct process to recycling depends on the composition of the PCBs, so the correct characterization is required. This work aims to characterize two different PCBs from obsolete computers: motherboard and memory board, concluding that they have 35.5 and 18.92% of metals, respectively, including precious metals as silver and gold. Also, memory board has 0.122% of these precious metals to the detriment of 0.047% from motherboard. )

Several wall rock porphyry or pyrometascmatic copper deposits occur within the metamorphosed Paleozoic formations along the northern and eastern flanks of the Little Dragoon Mountains. Rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to Recent occur in the area. The Tertiary age Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite intruded the sedimentary section in the eastern half of the range metamorphosing the Paleozoic carbonate units to tactites composed of garnet, diopside, and tremolite. Copper, zinc, and molybdenum minerals deposited in sites which are structurally controlled and stratigraphically favorable. Because the deposits are covered by alluvium, the information on structure, alteration, and mineralization is based upon a study of the diamond drilling programs. The mineralized district can be divided into four areas: 1) The Johnson Camp copper-zinc deposits; 2) The Dragoon copper deposit; 3) The I-10 copper-molybdenum deposit; 4) The Strong & Harris copper-zinc deposit. On the southwest end of the range beneath alluvial cover, the Cretaceous Bisbee Group was thrust over Precambrian and Paleozoic formations. The Tertiary Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite intruded and metamorphosed them. In the upper plate, the Cretaceous sediments near the intrusive were metamorphosed to metaquartzite and andalusite and sillimanite schists. In the lower plate the Martin and Horquilla formations were marbleized. The lower Abrigo was metamorphosed to epidote rich calc-silicate tactites and biotite hornfels. A composite geologic cross section, based upon diamond drilling,, through the Dragoon copper deposit is shown in Fig. 1. The geologic events which formed this deposit are: 1. A faulted section of Precambrian Pioneer formation and diabase and Cambrian Bolsa and Abrigo formations was thrust over Pennsylvanian Horquilla formation. Since the turn of this century, there has been increasing interest in the application of flotation processes to the beneficiation of finely divided minerals of various types, This is reflected by the large numbers of papers dealing with various aspects of this problem published annually both in this country and abroad. For the most part, such papers fall into one of three categories: 1. Those concerned with achieving, by various chemical and/or physical means, a set of conditions under which certain particles become potentially floatable while others do not. 2. Descriptive studies of plants and pilot plants effecting separations between such particles. 3. Studies of the effects of certain design and operating variables on the rates and efficiencies with which such separations can be effected.

The potash mine of the International Minerals and Chemical Corp. is about 18 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, in sec 1 and 12, T 22 S, R 29 E, N.M.P.M. Potash is produced from two zones in the Salado formation of late Permian age. The lower zone, consisting of a mixture of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), lies at a depth of about 900 ft, and the upper zone, in which the principal potassium mineral is langbeinite (K2S04.2MgS0d), lies at a depth of about 800 ft. Because of the plastic nature of the material, fractures in the Salado formation are extremely rare and have been noted only on the 800 ft level of the International mine. The open fracture described below is almost unique. Only one other open fracture has been noted, and it was on a working face in the same general area as the one described, but was destroyed before the writer had a chance to examine it. According to J. E. Tong, foreman on the 800 level, this fracture was similar to, but smaller than, the one herein described.

The flotation mechanism plays a key role in the flotation process. It is used to provide the contact between solid particles and bubbles and also the energy for these particles and bubbles to attach. The mechanism must therefore provide sufficient mixing to keep the solids in suspension so that they can be transported into the froth and recovered to the concentrate. The design of the mechanism is critical and over the past decade Outotec has developed and optimised a new mechanism design to improve metallurgical and energy performance. The FloatForce® mechanism consists of a rotor and stator arrangement and has been specifically designed to provide sustained mixing at higher air flows and lower power inputs.Over 500 FloatForce® mechanisms have been installed in existing and new operations. This paper outlines the technological aspects of the FloatForce® mechanism and provides metallurgical, operational and energy performance results from a number of flotation circuits in which these have been installed.

"Traditional iron ore beneficiation plants using washing, screening, and jigging processes require large volumes of process water. Generated slime during processing, its disposal and impact on water usage, is an important concern for any mining company. The challenge today, during extracting iron ore, is how to dispose of slime such that it is contained and stable, while maximizing water reuse and minimizing surface footprint. The slime disposal methods are sensitive to the environment. Two major technologies presently being practiced for disposing the slime across the world are pressure filtration and paste thickening. In this perspective an attempt has been made to do comparative study between paste thickening and pressure filtration for selection of suitable slime disposable technology for Noamundi processing plant, Tata Steel. From the studies, it is evident that by adopting pressure filtration technique it was possible to produce filtered slime, whereas filtration, rate reduces significantly with the presence of finer fraction. Further , the greatest advantage of paste thickening is volume reduction of slime. By considering the technology limitation and comparative lab test work result, it is opined that combination of filtration and paste thickening technology is favorable in terms of capital and operating cost and slime >45 µ should be filtered and < 45 µ slime should go for paste thickening. The study and the results are presented in details.INTRODUCTION The beneficiation processes always end up with an enriched portion of desired mineral - “Concentrate” and an enriched portion of undesired minerals - “Tailing”. The proportion and nature of tailings generated in every beneficiation process differ from ore to ore and reflects the characteristics of the feed processed. The traditional method of tailing disposal in many mineral processing industries has been to dispose them as thickener underflow at around 35% solids. Though, it had certain advantages of transportation with ease but contribute to a greater volume occupied in the tailing dam. This sustained practice and failure to utilize the space available in the tailing dam judiciously endangered the mining industry. The tailing management has become the toughest task to the mining industry and most of the mines are running out of space for disposing the fresh tailings as many of these are at the verge of getting filled."

The city of Christchurch, New Zealand is predominantly founded on alluvial sediments consisting of interbedded layers of loose to medium dense sand, soft to stiff silt and clay mixtures, and pockets of organics. These soil deposits have high liquefaction potential. Following the 2010/2011 Canterbury Earthquake Sequence several ground improvement trials were undertaken within Christchurch to understand the effectiveness of different types of ground improvement in these silty sand geological conditions. This paper presents a discussion of a stone column ground improvement trial undertaken at a Christchurch site with high fines content soils. Stone columns were installed using two types of installation methods and a range of Area Replacement Ratios (ARR) to assess the effectiveness of these ground improvement methods in high fines content soils as well as the influence on the type of installation method. Pre- and post-column installation CPTs, seismic Dilatometer Tests (sDMTs), cross-hole shear wave velocity tests, and plate load tests have been undertaken to assess the effectiveness of the ground improvement. Results of the testing are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION This paper presents the results of a stone column ground improvement trial undertaken in Christchurch, New Zealand (Fig.1). In 2010 and 2011, four large earthquakes (greater than magnitude 5.9) and thousands of smaller aftershocks occurred in the greater Christchurch region. These events are referred to as the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence (CES). Liquefaction occurred across large portions of the city during the stronger earthquakes, particularly the February 2011 event. Following the CES a large amount of data was collected across the city including the location and volume of sand boils, and the location and magnitude of ground cracks. Additionally, data from thousands of ground investigations have been uploaded into a public database. As a result, there is clear evidence that silt and silty sands liquefy in addition clean sands. The CES and resulting liquefaction motivated a series of studies and trials from different organisations aiming to better understand the available technologies for liquefaction mitigation. The subject of this paper is a ground improvement trial undertaken by a local contractor specialising in deep foundations and ground improvement. They were interested in understanding the effectiveness of stone column ground improvement in high fines content (silty) soils using two different installation techniques, vibratory and non-vibratory. Different arrays and Area Replacement Ratios (ARRs) were used for each of the two methods of columns installation.

A practical an interactive model to describe the operation of a flotation bank of mechanical cells was developed based on the hydrodynamic and metallurgical characterization of large industrial flotation cells. Thus, the mineral grade and recovery, as well as the stream properties along the flotation bank can be described in terms of the operating variables. The model was built considering the flotation bank as a distributed system, so the solution for the water and solids mass balances, per size classes, for each single cell, are sequentially solved. Also, each cell was described by two distinct zones, the collection zone characterized by the flotation rate constant and the froth zone characterized by the froth recovery. The mineral feed was described in terms of the mineral species and particle size classes, using a rectangular flotation rate constant distribution. Also, the effect of changing the actual operating variables (air flowrate, pulp level, pulp density, pulp flowrate, etc.) on the mineral collection process, in the collection (pulp) zone, was considered downstream along the bank. The froth recovery of floatable mineral has been estimated by measuring the mass flowrate of particles entering the froth by true flotation together with the concentrate mass flowrate (ton/h). The mass flowrate of collected particles at the pulp/froth interface level was calculated from direct measurement of bubble load (ton/m3) and gas flowrate (m3/h). Flotation recovery is mainly related to the froth depth and air flowrate. All parameters considered in the model have been adjusted from direct measurements in plant site. Also, the effects of other operating variables such as reagents dosage, top of froth grade, or froth discharge velocity are presently under study. This procedure has been tested using data from industrial rougher operations consisting of flotation banks with 5 cells to 9 cells in series, and different cell sizes, such as 45m3, 130m3, 160m3 and 250m3. Thus, it has been shown that the model approach is a powerful tool for flotation cells diagnosis, operation and development of new control strategies, as well as, to evaluate the effect that de-sign and operating variables have upon the collection and froth zones performance in large flotation cells.

Six-fold, high-resolution, compressional-wave seismic data were acquired across a coal mining property in the Meigs County study area, southeastern Ohio, with a view to differentiating the Clarion Coal Member and a truncating channel sandstone prior to longwall mining without costly drilling. The seismic technique, as is illustrated by our example data, was successfully used to map those areas where the coal is present, as well as those places where it was eroded by incising fluvial streams. Our results demonstrate that the seismic reflection method, using an engineering seismograph, can be a cost-effective way to define discontinuities associated with coal seams.

The ACARP Landmark initiative has created the opportunity to advance the level of automation in the coal industry by first focusing on the core production area of longwall mining. A Landmark Longwall Automation project was commenced in July 2001. The major outcome of automation using on-face observation has been divided into ten outcome areas that have been fully scoped for a three-year initial project life. A major facilitating technology has been the implementation inertial navigation system (INS) technology that can map the shearer position in 3D. A focus of the project is to deliver a system that is at least as productive as the current most productive manually controlled longwall face.

Tlze room-temperature tensile fracture oj smooth, round specitnens of three ultrnhigh- strength steels tempered to a wide range of strength levels was studied by means by light and electron-microscopic examination of the fracture surfaces. The fracture of AISI 4340 and 300 M at all the strength levels studied, and H-11, except after tempering at 1200° and 1300°F, occurs in three stages. The initiation of fracture is internal (except in some lightly tcmpeved specimers in which fracture is initiated at surface flaws), and is nucleated largely by separation at metal-second phase intevjaces. TIze voids grow and, coalesce to form a crack. When the crack has reached a sufficienl size, rapid propngutio~z ensues. Failure in this stage of fracture usually occurs by dimpled rupture of inicroshear stefis. In the case of H-11 tempered in the 1125° to 1300°F range, fracture in the shear steps is predominantly by concentrated deformation without void formation. The termination of fracture is usually occomplished by the formation of a shear lib in which fracture occurs by shear dimpled rupture. In the case of H-11 tempered at 1200° and 1300°F, no shear lip was obserued, and the radial elelments extend to the surface—a true termination slage does not exist. ThE tensile fracture of several metals and alloys has been investigated.2-4 In the case of polycrystal-line materials, cup-cone fracture usually results. The mechanism of cup-cone fracture may be summarized as follows.5 Cavities are formed in the necked region of the specimen. They usually are initiated by inclusions or second-phase particles. The cavities extend outwards by means of internal necking, and a crack lying about perpendicular to the length of the specimen is formed in the necked region. Subsequent crack growth occurs by the spread of bands of concentrated plastic deformation inclined at an angle of 30 to 40 deg to the tensile axis. Cavities are formed in the bands of concentrated deformation. The deformation bands zigzag across the bar with the net result that mac-roscopically the crack extends about perpendicular to the specimen axis. The final separation, or cone formation, appears to occur by continued crack propagation along one of the deformation bands out to the surface of the specimen. The micromechanics of the tensile fracture of ultrahigh-strength steels have not been thoroughly investigated. Larson and carr6,7 studied the tensile-fracture surfaces of AISI 4340 with a low-power microscope and reported that three stages of fracture could be observed in general. A centrally located region characterized by circumferential ridges, an annular region characterized by radial surface striations, and a peripheral shear lip were found. It was first pointed out by 1rwin8 that the central region is very probably one of fracture initiation and slow growth, and that the annular, radially striated region is one of rapid crack growth. Presumably the crack grows slowly, assuming roughly a lenticular shape, until it is large enough for the initiation of rapid propagation. In this investigation, it was attempted to determine the fine-scale aspects of the room-temperature tensile fracture of some ultrahigh-strength steels, and to relate the variation in fracture mode with microstructure. The steels studied were AISI 4340, 300M, and H-11 tempered to a wide range of strength levels. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The compositions of the steels studied are given in Table I. The steel was received in the form of hot-rolled bar stock 5/8 to 1 in. in diameter from which oversized specimens were machined and heat-treated. The heat treatments employed are given in Table 11. Subsequent to heat treatment, the specimens were ground to the final dimensions and stress-relieved by heating for 1 hr at 350°F (with the exception of the as-quenched steel). Standard smooth round specimens of 0.252-in. diameter and 1-in. gage length were tested in a Tinius Olsen Universal Testing Machine using a cross-head speed of 0.025 in. per min. The relatively coarse aspects of the fracture topography were determined by light-microscopic examination of sections through the fracture surface of nickel-plated specimens. A direct carbon-replication technique9 was used in the electron-microscopic study of the fracture surfaces. The replicas were examined in the electron microscope, and stereo pairs of electron micrographs were taken. The stereo pairs were then examined using a Wild ST4 Mirror Stereoscope. Carbide and inclusion particles extracted in the replicas were analyzed by selected-area electron diffraction. II) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The mechanical testing data are summarized in Table 111. "This paper is the result of a continuing investigation begun in 1953 by government geologists and mining companies. Previous work is reviewed and the development of several stratigraphic nomenclatures and correlation schemes is traced, culminating with the interim report of the Federal-Provincial Committee on Huronian Stratigraphy formed in 1966.The stratigraphy, structure and correlation of the Huronian rocks of the Blind River area and the region between Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury are reviewed. The area is underlain by three Precambrian units: (1) the Archean greenstones and granites, (2) the Huronian sedimentary and volcanic rocks and (3) the post-Huronian intrusive rocks. The Huronian rocks, largely quartzite and conglomerate with greywackes, argillites and carbonates, were laid down in shallow water transgressing over the eroded Archean basement. Thickness and facies changes indicate a northwesterly source, northerly overlap and deposition controlled by basement topography. Polymictic conglomerates, occurring at least at three horizons, represent tillites and are associated with varvites with dropped clasts. These are best developed in the Gowganda formation, which varies from a continental glacial environment in the north to a marine glacial environment in the southeast.There were at least three phases of post-Huronian igneous activity, probably related to several periods or phases of late Precambrian deformation and metamorphism: (1) sills of Nipissing diabase and rather younger diabase dikes; (2) the Cutler Granite and Croker Island Complex; and (3) dikes of Keweenawan olivine diabase.Copper mineralization is associated with the Nipissing diabase. The uranium ores are found in pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerate near the Huronian Archean unconformity, particularly in ancient valleys; they are considered to be placer deposits modified by later events. All mining operations, including iron ore, maintain a focus of continuous improvement and asset optimisation in their operations. As all the operations in the Mine-to-Mill value chain are inter-dependent, available technologies that address efficiencies across the value chain are once again in the spotlight as companies are driven to improve productivity and maximise mine site profits to increase return on capital invested. Core to continuous improvement is the need to understand the baseline and the impact of changes to the process. In this paper, we discuss some of the key attributes in the mine to mill process, including their influence on productivity and cost, the need for direct measurement and areas where they should be applied. Many initiatives can be considered to improve mine to mill processes. Mining operations are planned and executed based on designs and models to achieve the operation’s objectives. However, there are many variables in the different parts of the value chain, such as blasting, material handling, crushing and screening. Measurement of the key attributes establishes the baseline for Mine to Mill (or Pit to Plant) performance which is necessary to understand the impact of any proposed improvements to the process design and execution and to monitor the outcomes on an ongoing basis to sustain the improvements that have been implemented. We have focused this paper on two types of measurement – blast movement and particle size of materials through the mine to mill process. Several innovative technologies are already available to measure these attributes and assist operations improve productivity and mine site profits.

A basic model has been developed to help assess methane control needs for longwall mining of coal in gassy areas. Rather than depending upon reservoir and rock mechanic theory, it uses an empirically-determined gas emission rate as an input and operates on the assumption that, within a specific region and zone, gas emissions will be relatively equivalent for uniform incremental volumes of gob created by mining. The computer program divides longwall panels into segments, keeps track of the face advance, and generates emission rates and volumes for both the entire panel and for individual zones within the panel by summing values for all undermined segments. This model can aid the determination of the number, size, and location of vertical wells or other methane control applications that are needed for gob gas control.
