The removal of phosphorus is essential 1n order to increase the recycling of steelmaking slags for their manganese, iron and lime contents. This study aims at establishing the phosphorus mineralogy and its distribution in steelmaking slags, the effect of slow cooling, and the methods of phosphorus removal. A series of steelmaking slag samples was prepared at different cooling rates, and the mineralogy, chemistry and grain size of the samples were investigated with SEM/EDS and x-ray diffraction. The test results using high gradient magnetic separation are discussed.

The rising demand for lithium-ion batteries, coupled with international climate targets, emphasises the need for circular economy and zero-waste recycling approaches. However, so far, no industrial-scaled solutions are available that fulfil global recovery targets. Therefore, a novel pyrometallurgical reactor was developed at the Chair of Thermal Processing Technology at Montanuniversitaet Leoben to avoid lithium slagging and recover volatile elements via the gas phase. Nevertheless, previous results show that several impact factors, including interfering elements or pre-treatment steps, strongly limit the recycling efficiency of black mass. To simulate the black mass and provide feedback on possible influences of pre-treatment steps, cathode material from production with additives of interfering elements was analysed regarding melting behaviour. The results show that formation of a further processable alloy was increased by almost 50% when pretreatment steps were excluded, indicating pre-treatment steps as a major influence to be considered within this specific recycling route.

The feasibility of the application of electrodialysis in separation of light and heavy rare earth elements (REE) in synthetic solutions was investigated. The experiments were carried out using single and binary solutions of a light (cerium) and heavy (ytterbium) REE. The effects of electrical voltage, electrical current, and the addition of complexing agent (EDTA) to increase the separation selectivity were investigated. Separation of Ce and Yb was achieved in binary solutions with and without the addition of EDTA. Higher degrees of separation were seen at higher voltages. Ce–Yb separation was more significant in the presence of EDTA. The separation factor of Ce–Yb and Ce–Yb-EDTA were 1.44 and 2.60, respectively.

"This study investigated the psychrometric properties of ventilating air in GAL coal mines. Related measurements were done in underground openings and have been arranged as input data for computer programs prepared for ventilation network and psychrometric analysis.Results obtained from network analysis have been used for psychrometric analysis of ventilating air. Changes in heat and moisture content of air in two major path s between entry and discharge of ventilating air have been investigated. Psychrometric processes occurring in the mine were determined and are shown graphically in Figures 1 and 2. Special attention has been given to determine the changes in psychrometric properties and processes involved in the faces. Results are outlined in this paper.IntroductionThe psychrometric properties of mine air are important factors to mine productivity and efficiency. Therefore, psychrometric analysis should be made for all underground mines; any undesired situation observe d could be corrected by taking the necessary precautions.The analyses were done as a case study for GAL mines, the only mechanized lignite coal mine in Turkey. In this mine, workable reserve is about 300 million tons of coal and yearly planned production is 2.2 million tons. Production is continuing from a coal measure-bed having two coal seams with average thicknesses of 1.52 m and 1.72 m respectively. A 0.85 m shale band exists between these two seams.Two full y-mechanized faces, approximately 220 m long, usually work simultaneously. All measurements, including mine gases and air velocity, are done by sensors connected to a control room by a monitoring system.In the analysis, a line diagram is utilized to described the mine on which every junction and branch is numbered."

Many mines adopt necessarily conservative backfilling strategies due to a lack of understanding of their backfill behaviour. In the past five years, extensive instrumentation campaigns have focused on measuring in-situ cemented paste backfill behaviour. These tests have resulted in optimised backfilling efficiency through elimination or reduction of cure periods where; i) controls on backfill behaviour are understood, and ii) barricade pressures are demonstrated to be within a safe range using routine monitoring as a required QA/QC procedure. Recently, this work has been extended to consider hydraulic backfill operations. Two stopes have been instrumented at Vale?s Coleman and Garson Ramp mines. The instrumentation and deployment methods are discussed, and representative total earth pressure, pore pressure, and temperature data are presented. In one case, pressures in the stope are relatively low as drainage causes strength gain in the fill and so pressures are arched. In a second example, again, drainage causes strength gain in the fill, but increasing temperatures correlate with pressure increases even during downtimes in filling. These pressure increases are thought to be caused by thermal expansion of the backfill in confined locations. Generally, the instrumentation approach has proven successful in measuring hydraulic backfill behaviour and offers good potential for incorporation into a procedure to safely maximise backfilling efficiency through routine barricade pressure monitoring, when combined with safeguards to ensure adequate fill drainage.

The propensity of coal spontaneous combustion can be evaluated using various laboratory testing methods such as R70 adiabatic tests, thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) and critical self-heating temperature (CSHT) methods. Each of the methods has its unique characteristics and index for classifying the propensity of self-ignition of coals. Accountable relationships among the propensity indices of different methods should be established. Using the newly established R and TGA testing setups in our ventilation laboratory, samples from US coal mines have been collected and tested. 70 The TGA is a relatively new quantitative method. A test can be conducted in a relatively short time. The temperature and weight of the sample can be measured with high precision and then used to determine the activation energy of the coal which is a good indicator for potential of self-heating. Under a specific experimental design, the TGA technique could perform the proximate analysis for determining coal quality parameters (e.g., moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon and ash content). These parameters can be used in an empirical equation for assessing the potential of coal self-ignition. The trend of activation energies determined using TGA techniques and adiabatic tests are reasonably consistent with each other. As a case study, a comparative analysis of these two methods for determining activation energy was made on coal samples collected from Indiana. The kinetics of the spontaneous combustion mechanism has been explained. If the functional groups of a coal are easier to be activated with a small amount of activation energy at a relatively low temperature, the coal will has a higher potential of self-heating. With the kinetic and coal quality parameters determined by the TGA setup, it has been found that the coal with low potential of self-ignition has low self-heating rate, high activation energy and high minimum self-heating temperature.

"At present scenario, there has been an increasing demand in the usage of blend coal in power sector; regardless of how, specific knowledge on burning and ignition characteristics and their interactive effects is stingy. In this work a detailed investigation was therefore taken up to study in detail the combustion characteristics of selected coal samples and their blends. Certain parameters were believed to have significant effects on combustion characteristics of individual coal and their blend. Major parameters identified for this purpose included proximate analysis, combustion conditions, heating rate, reaction regions, blending ratios, ignition condition, reactivity (or reaction rate) and burnout temperatures. With the help of these parameters, thermal features and reaction kinetics of the individual and blended samples were investigated through a qualitative and quantitative thermo-gravimetric analysis of two different individual coals and their blend carried out in an oxygen atmosphere from ambient to 800 0C at a constant heating rate of 10 K/min. A significant difference in terms of rate of mass loss with temperature correlated from Arrhenius expression along with coal-coal blend interactions and deviation from their expected behaviour, have been observed between the kinetics of individual and blend samples, the latter showing better ignition performance and comprehensive combustion phase. It was also found that particles having the lowest percentages of volatile matter and ash could possibly be blended with particles having high ash and volatile matter to meet the required burning condition which can be effective in terms of cost savings, improved fuel economy, reduced undesirable exhaust emissions and improved safety of coal burning equipment. Experimental results further indicated that individual samples and coal blend samples have different combustion features in terms of residue left, peak temperatures and activation energies. Thermodynamic activation parameters such as activation energy, pre-exponential factor and order of reaction were computed from the thermal data using the modified form of non-isothermal methods. INTRODUCTION Coal has been the most significant source of energy for India and would remain so at least for the next few decades. About 60-65% of the electricity produced in India is from coal fired power plants. Indian coal is of drift origin and of high ash content. Ash content of the coal burnt in power plants in India is in the range of 30-45%, most of it being Run-of-Mine coal. Most of the power plants in India source their coal from number of mines, most common being multiple sourcing. Usually coal from each source [1] is burnt separately. For various reasons mostly associated with logistics, burning of blended coal is rarely practiced. Blending of coal is practised mainly for improving the quality of available coal and meets the shortage of coal supply. Blending technique is generally practised in power industries to reduce the cost of power generation along with mitigating combustion performance or slagging problem ensuring consistency in as fired coal quality and also for environmental compliance. Blending good quality imported coal can improve coal quality and helps in preserving indigenous coal resources for longer period [2]. Use of blended coal shall reduce load on all boiler components (Mill, CHP, Boiler, AHP) & reduce O&M cost and increase the availability. The main purpose of blending is to get a blended as fired coal having ash, volatile matter and gross calorific value close to design coal and the two coals are to be blended in such ratio proportions that resultant coal blend have desired ash, volatile matter and gross calorific value [3]. For a coal to be blended certain parameters have to be considered to get compatibility with respect to combustibility ( Burn ability) of coal, grindability ( HGI), ash fusion behavior, swelling characteristics of coal, need to be checked"

"Continuous casting processes, and the roll casting process in particular, offer considerable potential to the Aluminium industry, both meatallurgically and economically.The three major limiting process problems that occur during roll casting are Centre Line Segregation', 'Sticking' where metal adheres to the rolls during casting, and 'Heat Line' formation. 'Heat Lines' are localised semi-continuous longitudinal defects, usually a few cms in width, where the cast metal leaves the roll bite partially molten. These defects occur at relatively low casting speeds when the mean slab exit temperature remains several hundred degrees below the solidus temperature. The objective of the work described here is to develop a better understanding of the roll casting process in general, and in particular, to understand the phenomenon of 'Heat Line' formation.A steady state two dimensional finite difference model has been developed to describe the roll casting process, incorporating a variable heat transfer coefficient through the roll bite. In the model the difference equations are formulated using a control volume method and latent heat is incorporated according to the Scheil equation. A Gauss-Seidel type technique is used to obtain the solution. Because the rate of heat evolution is non-linear the temperature in each box is determined by using a Newton-Raphson method. The solution for a box can be multi valued and therefore lead to instability particularly near the vicinity of the front. A stability 'criterion is presented which shows that to obtain a stable solution it is better to have long narrow boxes rather than boxes with small dimensions in both directions.The model explains why heat lines form in terms of the variable slab/roll heat transfer coefficient.Experimental measurements of slab exit temperatures are also presented. These were obtained on a Hunter twin roll caster for the binary AI-Cu system, at two compositions over as wide a range· of casting speeds as possible. The experimental results are compared with the predicted ones."

As of June 30, 1970, Federal regulations required the operator of each underground coal mine to maintain the average concentration of respirable dust below legislative standards. As of March 1, 1971, over 152,000 respirable dust samples have been processed by the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 75 percent of underground working sections are being sampled in accordance with Federal regulations. Results indicate that 72 percent of the sections which have completed at least one basic sampling cycle are below 3.0 mg/m3, the standard in effect under the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 (P.L. 91-173). Notices of Violation were issued on 1,670 underground mines for failure to begin a sampling program; Withdrawal Orders were issued in 64 of these instances. Notices of Violation were issued on 1,121 sections where applicable dust levels were exceeded; Withdrawal Orders were issued in seven of these instances. There are 381 mining sections currently operating on permit; from the interim Compliance Panel.

"THE COAL INDUSTRY of the United States• and Canada has made great progress in recent years. Coal mining in •the old days represented one of the most arduous tasks for labour and industry, but over the years great progress has been made in reducing the effort required from labour. Also, the tonnage produced per man, the cost of the coal per ton, and the overall safety of the operation, have been greatly improved.Looking back over the past fifty years:, the era can be divided into four principal parts: (a) hand-loading, (b) track mining methods, (c) off-track mining methods, and (d) continuous mining. For many years, all of the coal was won by hand-mining methods. The first forms of mechanization •resembled the move from the horse •and buggy to the automobile. Early track mechanical mining methods were usually adaptations of the direct methods involved in hand-mining, with each improvement directed toward some specific process. A revolutionary development came about with off-track mining methods. The first efforts in this direction were provided by off-track mechanical loading machines, which loaded the cars •on track and differed from conventional track mining methods only in that the loading machines themselves operated on the mine floor. With the advent -of the shuttle car about ten years ago, true off-track mining came into being, and real progress in this direction began to be made.At the present time we •are at the beginning of a new era -.the era of continuous mining. There will be a period of development with some time needed before the system is generally applied throughout the industry, but -already enough •has been done to indicate rather dearly what the future holds in this direction."

The following is extracted from a report by the author to the International Valuation Standards Committee (IVSC), with minor modifications for the purpose of publication. The author represented the IVSC at the annual session of the Ad Hoc Group of Experts on Harmonization of Fossil Energy and Mineral Resources Terminology. This is a body organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). This second session, held in Geneva, Switzerland, achieved an important agreement for advancement toward uniform global standards for the classification of minerals and petroleum reserves and resources. Attendees discussed the possibility of enhancing the United Nations Framework Classification for Energy and Mineral Resources (UNFC) for implementation globally as the classification standard for use in financial reports under the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). Presently, there are between 100 and 200 mineral and petroleum resource classification (or definition) systems throughout the world — a similar number to what there are countries.

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. INFACON 7, the seventh International Ferro Alloys Congress, took place in Trondheim, Norway, in June 1995. The main aim of the Congress, which was held under the auspices of Euroalliages and the Norwegian Ferroalloy Research Organization, was to present the challenges facing the ferro-alloys industry on the road to the 21st century. Halyard Tveit, Chairman of the Technical Committee, summarized these as: ? the transition to a single global market economy ? new demands with regards to quality arising from customer needs, and ? increased awareness of the global environment. In the Plenary Sessions Kouichi Nakamura (Nippon Steel) outlined, from the steel industry's point of view, the relationship between technical advances in the products and more demanding ferro-alloy specifications. Advances in steel manufacturing technology and higher product quality have been supported in the past by raising the quality standards of ferro-alloys. Future requirements are bound to bring about more severe standards, and these need to be established by common agreement between both industries.

This paper provides a brief look at a proposed short-longwall for coal, development. The proposed method is an attempt to realize the advantages of longwall mining in deposits that, historically, would only be minable by continuous mining methods. An overview of the proposed layout, development requirements, production rate, ventilation scheme and other associated features is provided. This mining method could help operators in above-drainage seams where minable areas are smaller. It may also have application in areas that are peppered with gas wells and in environmentally sensitive areas which preclude the use of conventional longwalls.

The Spa1lation Process Because of the low thermal conductivity of many hard rocks, rapid heating of these rocks produces a thin surface layer in which the temperatures attain high values. Thermal expansion of this surface layer is constrained by the reminder of the still cool rock, and when stresses within the surface rock become high enough, the surface rock breaks away from the cooler rock behind it and flies or falls off as a thin flake called a spall. Then the next, newly exposed surface is heated, and the process continues. This process is the basis of spallation drilling. The hot gases from a jet burner provide the heat for spallation to occur, and their high velocity provides a scouring action that transfers heat to the rock and removes the spalls as rapidly as they form. Spallation is a process which works in very hard rock. It is dependent upon the thermal expansion coefficient and the thermal diffusivity of the rock but is also affected by any discontinuities in the rock. To date the efforts which have been made to evaluate the various rock according to their spallability has been minimal. As the success of this process is dependent upon the characteristics of rock it is expected that the study of rock mechanics will prove to be of greater value to this program than to the other mechanism for drilling and excavating rock. Commercial Uses of SPALLATION In the 19408s, the Linde Air Products Division of Union Carbide (UC 1 began developing spallation for use in mining taconite ore, which is presently the chief source of iron in the United States. In this work UC developed a jet-piercing tool that burned fuel oil with oxygen to produce spallation and contained mechanical cutters to remove rock that was not amenable to spallation. The UC jet-piercing machines have since produced about 40 million feet of shallow blast holes used for emplacing explosives in the taconite mines. During this work it was found that hole diameters could be increased by merely reducing the advance rate of the burners and that existing holes could be enlarged by making another pass through the hole with the same burner. The Browning Engineering Go. of Hanover, N.H., has developed a hand-held spallation burner to cut slots in granite. It has been used for a quarter of a century and is now standard equipment for quarrying granite throughout the world. This burner, which resembles a small jet engine oriented with its exhaust pointed downward, is the forerunner of a flame jet burner used to spall experimental holes in granite at maximum rates in excess of 100 ft/hr when operating in hard, competent granite. It uses No. 2 fuel oil, which is burned with compressed air. The system uses water to cool the burner and the exhaust gases. These gases, along with the steam produced from the cooling water, blow the spalls from the hole. Experimental Work Theoretical and experimental work has been accomplished by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Los Alamos National Laboratory. This work is reported in Refs. (3) and (4). To verify the experimental results of this work laboratory scaled down field tests were conducted using two we1 1 characterized granites from quarries in Barre, VT and Westerby, RI, under defined heating conditions. In the laboratory tests a propane - oxygen heating torch was used to direct a flame at the granite surface and the spal 1 ing process was examined at various heating rates with a high-speed video taping system operated at 200 frame per second. This produced a time-lapse sequence where the onset of the spallation process was easily distinguished. Also the heat flux from the torch to a flat surface at various stand off distances and flows was measured. THE sums given in the accompanying table are those actually paid for material and labor up to about August, 1875; but, as some parts of the machinery were not wholly completed at the starting of the works in September, 1875, the statement cannot be taken as an absolutely correct note of the total cost. A complete description, with engravings of the building and machinery, was given in Engineering, April 26th, 1878, in a paper by Messrs. A. L. Holley and Lenox Smith, to which convenient reference may be made. A detailed list of the construction accounts has been given in a paper, by the present writer, in vol. vi, Transactions of the Institute. A summary is given in the table of the items in each class which enter into the total cost, and also a note of the proportion which each of these items forms of the whole. A concise view may thus be obtained of the facts embodied in the statement, as a whole, even though it cannot lay claim to completeness in showing the entire or final cost. An urgent suggestion has reached the writer from a distant country that such statements of cost to be really most serviceable should give the details in days of labor, in weight of iron, and in number of brick, and to this an assent is most cordially yielded. It is true, however, that the mere labor of copying and compiling these details to such a degree of minuteness, would be very great, and, in any event, the probable difference between the plans of an existing establishment and one projected, would be so wide as to render even so complete a statement of cost of little more real service than the approximate notes given herewith.

The Geological Department, headed by the Chief Geologist, is part of the General Engineering Division and is under the direct supervision of the Chief Engineer. The Geological Department is responsible for the technical direction of all work concerned with the finding and outlining of ore. It provides the mine operating staffs, with the necessary plans and sections to enable them to design pit and underground layouts and to, extract ores' as required by outgoing cargoes. The department maintains grade and ore reserve statistics in conjunction with a mining recovery factor at year-end. These duties are performed through the co-operation of all departments participating in the overall operation. As a result, a steadily broadening use is being made of geology at Steep Rock.
