The use of electrical or electronic safety systems to protect personnel, and the engineering tasks associated with the design, manufacture and maintenance of these systems are referred to using the term ‘functional safety’. In the past ten years, the use of such systems has transitioned from its traditional base, in oil and gas major hazard facilities, to being a part of most large mining and materials handling projects. In particular, functional safety is rapidly becoming a significant component of Australian iron ore projects, typically in the form of emergency stops, remote isolation, drive through interlock, robot cell entry or mobile machine anti-collision systems. While these types of systems have been in use in iron ore for a long time, functional safety standards (eg AS61508, AS62061, AS4024.1503) require more rigourous demonstration of the level of risk reduction provided by the systems.The early engineering project development phases require a number of key decisions to be made around functional safety implementation. The decisions made at this point in a project will go on to dictate the required types of risk assessment and analysis, equipment selection, sizing of substations, and training and maintenance requirements for owners. For project teams that are unfamiliar with functional safety, or inexperienced in its application, an incorrect decision or failure to understand the requirements of the chosen standard can lead to a failure to meet contract requirements, as well as major cost and schedule overruns.This paper examines the implications of functional safety on early engineering studies, focusing on the following questions: How does a designer or company determine what standard is best suited to their project? What key aspects of functional safety design need to be considered during project development? A few years ago, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Unimin Corporation developed a clothes cleaning system that is able to quickly, effectively, and safely remove dust from a worker?s clothing without dust exposure to the worker, the work environment, or co-workers during the cleaning process. To perform the process, a worker enters a cleaning booth and activates an air spray manifold which blows the dust from the worker?s clothing. Since the cleaning booth is under negative pressure, all the dust and product removed are contained. In the original design, this dust-laden air was exhausted to a dust collector system. However, since most operations do not have excess dust collector capacity, it was decided to determine an alternative method to provide for a stand-alone cleaning system. This was achieved by ducting the exhaust outside the plant and into the atmosphere. This technique was recently tested and shown to be a viable method to provide for a stand-alone clothes cleaning system.

"There has been considerable output over the last three decades from the social sciences concerning man and his working environment. In the mining industry at large, however, authoritarian, hierarchical control systems remain the norm, and it can be argued that something less than optimum effectiveness in terms of both productivity and worker satisfaction has resulted.Recently (/975), Campbell Chibougamau Mines Ltd. devised a most interesting organization and incentive system that links the underground production of a standard ton of mined output at controlled grade to an incentive payment scheme. A parallel scheme in the mill complex is based on maximizing recovery of copper and gold from available feed. A key part of both minsystems is the formation of groups who have considerable autonomy, particularly when compared to the still prevalent traditional mining industry relationships between the worker and supervisory levels.This paper traces the development of Campbell Chibougamau's system . Attention is drawn to qualitative and quantitative measures of the success of the method through the commentary of those miners involved in the scheme, and by reference to the favourable records on productivity, absenteeism, safety, turnover and grievance activity.IntroductionPyramidal or hierarchical management control systems, coupled to piece-work incentive schemes, predominate throughout Canada's underground mining industry. Although specific details of such systems vary from site to site, they , are generally understood and accepted as fact by the majority of the work force.Normally, a front-line supervisor (shift boss) directs a number of workmen and assigns them to tasks and working locations commensurate with their abilities, knowledge, training and skills. This front -line supervisor may direct or supervise from as few as 12 to as many as 75 or more workmen. He issues orders according to his assigned production objectives and ensures that these directions are fulfilled in accordance with standard mine practice . Several shift bosses are usually directed by a mine foreman or mine captain. The mine captains report to a general foreman or directly to the mine superintendent or his assistant, depending on the size and scope of the operation."

In the course of a study of domestic Manganese resources, 2-ton representative samples of ore were taken by Bureau of Mines' engineers from the Payday claim, Weber County, and the Newcomb-claims, Rich County, Utah. The Payday No. 1 deposit is situated 13 miles northeast of Huntsville, Weber County, Utah. The manganese ore is a. replacement deposit in limestone and consists of manganese oxides imbedded 'in clay and also as the cementing agent consolidating small pebbles and pieces of quartz and limestone.

The 61,470-acre Lick Creek Roadless Study Area is in the western Salmon River Mountains, centered 12 miles northeast from McCall, ID. U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined the roadless area in 1984. There is no recorded mineral production from the study area and no current mineral-related activity was observed. The roadless area is underlain by granitic rocks of the Idaho batholith. Pegmatite dikes and aplite dikes are present locally. Sampling indicates these rocks are not mineralized. No mineral resources were identified. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of federal lands recommended for wilderness, as required by The Wilderness Act of 1964. The USBM examines and evaluates individual mines, claims, prospects, and mineralized zones; USGS conducts broader geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Such data helps Congress and other federal agencies make decisions affecting the use of public lands.

The occurrence of oil or "tar" in Mexico was mentioned as early as the seventeenth century by Friar Sagahun, who gives the Indian name "chapopote," by which these asphalt seepages are still called. This asphalt was apparently used, as it has been used by primitive people in many parts of the world, in religious ceremonies and for medicinal purposes. Travellers also report that the ruins in Yucatan and the pyramids in southern Mexico show traces of the use of "chapopotel' as a building cement.l DeGolyer says that the first attempt to exploit oil or gas in Mexico in a commercial way is shown by the records of the Memoria de Fomento of 1865, when permission was granted to a Senor Ildefonso Lopez to exploit the deposits of petroliferous substances in the San Jose de las Rusias area in the State of Tamaulipas. Other concessions follow, and probably refer to surface seepages which occur in that district. This was several years after the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania. In 1868, a well 125 it. deep was :drilled by a company organized in Mexico City, in what is now known as the,, Furbero district, and a little oil was refined there. In 1873, residents of Tampico denounced seepages along the Tamesi River, and asphalt was mined near Tempoal in the Canton of Tantoyuca. No drilling was attempted. But between 1880 and 1883 several shallow wells were drilled for oil in Mexico, two of them being near the present Potrero de Llano field west of Tuxpam. The wells were drilled by a Boston company with Canadian rigs, and are said to have reached a depth of about 400 ft., while one is reported to have flowed. Several other abortive attempts were made to drill for oil between 1885 and the beginning of the present century, about which time the Mexican Petroleum & Liquid Fuel Co., Ltd., in which Cecil Rhodes was interested drilled 24 wells unsuccessfully, several of them as deep as 1,500 ft., in the State of Vera Cruz. GEM (Geologic Element Motion) is a Discrete Element Method (DEM) capability for blast-induced heave simulation with a very fast computational algorithm that can efficiently treat many different element shapes by utilizing alternating arcs and lines. GEM calculates rock motion from a knowledge of the gas pressure moving the elements. This requires an expression for the pressure vs volume, or the adiabat, of the explosion product gases. This work uses an analytical expression for the adiabat derived from the explosive’s properties. The effect of the explosive detonation pressure in crushing an annulus of rock, and setting up a shock wave, is termed Brisance. GEM incorporates a working hypothesis for the deleterious effect of Brisance on subsequent rock motion.

Service failures of seemingly conventional galvanized bolts, in normal operation, on transmission towers in New Brunswick have been found to be the result of hydrogen cracking. In both these cases, similar failures elsewhere can be avoided by suitable clauses in the purchase specifications. In the first case described, the manufacturing procedure was responsible for strengthening and embrittling a standard, soft, constructional steel. In this case, a fracture mechanics analysis predicted critical crack depths for final fracture very similar to those found in practice. This case reveals an apparent cooperative connection between hydrogen embrittlement and strain ageing in plain carbon steels. In the second case described, the steel was simply a high strength steel which should not have been made into galvanized bolts.

THE September issue of MINING AND METALLURGY might almost have served as a review of the advances in the metallurgy of gold during the current year. In addition to a scholarly article by F. W. Bradley, there were able descriptions by W. W. Bradley and W. F. Boericke of the methods followed in California and in Ontario. Considered together, the two last-named articles indicate the many possible combinations of flotation with one or more of the older processes. This, the prominence of flotation as an aid in the beneficiation of gold ores, is probably the most striking of the year's developments. It would perhaps be nearer the fact to say that the year has not been marked by the gold metallurgists' discovery of the flotation process, but rather by the flotation merchandizers' discovery of gold metallurgy. I say this because native gold was floated successfully more than fifteen years ago, and a reference to these results was published six years ago.

En la producción de aceros limpios el control inclusionario es crítico para la obtención de un producto que cumpla con los requerimientos de calidad. El análisis de la distribución de tamaño de inclusión mediante modelos estadísticos permite estimar la incidencia de inclusiones en el producto solidificado a partir de mediciones tomadas en muestras relativamente pequeñas. En seis coladas de acero bajo carbono desoxidado con aluminio se tomaron muestras de acero a lo largo del procesamiento en horno olla y colada continua. Las muestras se prepararon para estimar mediante análisis metalográfico los tamaños de inclusión. Los datos de tamaño de inclusión se analizaron mediante modelos estadísticos de valores extremos, se hace una comparativa entre la distribución Gumbel (que forma parte de la norma ASTM E-2283) y la distribución Generalizada de Valores Extremos (GEV). Mediante una prueba de hipótesis con el estadístico Anderson-Darling, análisis de cuantiles y con la función de supervivencia se demuestra que la población inclusionaria se describe de una mejor manera con la distribución GEV. Finalmente se da un estimado de la incidencia probable de inclusiones en el producto solidificado.

SINCE the r ? a transformation rates of many carbon-free ferrous alloys and low-carbon alloy steels are relatively fast, conventional equipment is not suitable for the dilatometric determination of continuous cooling transformation diagrams. On the other hand, a method based on metallographic analysis of quenched specimens would not be practicable because the various products of shear-dominated transformation are essentially indistinguishable in low-carbon iron-base alloys. Both problems may be avoided by a thermal analysis method employing gas quenching of small specimens austenitized in vacuo. The laboratory equipment employed in the present study consisted of a Tektronix Type 564 Storage Screen Oscilloscope and a Kinney high-vacuum evaporator, modified as shown in Fig. 1, to permit heating a small specimen and cooling it slowly by programmed cooling or rapidly (up to about 8000°F per sec) by a controlled quench with helium gas. The oscilloscope records the electromotive force of a 40-gage (0.003-in.-diam) Chromel-Alumel thermocouple in the specimen during cooling. The temperature at which the cooling curve begins to show the influence of the heat produced by the phase change in the specimen was arbitrarily taken as the transformation-start temperature.*

"SummaryActive loaded strand anchors are often used for slope stabilization, retaining walls or tiedown anchors. Normally, strands are tensioned against the structure and wedges are locked inside the anchorages at a certain lock-off load. During the life of the structure, anchors can receive additional loading during a surcharge, seismic event or other activity on the structure.In order to have a reliable ground anchor system, the strand must not slip through the anchorage wedges during its service life. Strand slippage has been reported during lock-off, when dirty wedge plates and wedges have been used. Low lock-off loads are believed to contribute to strand slippage too. Since the initial lock-off load for a ground anchor is usually lower than the lock-load for an equivalent capacity tendon in other types of post-tensioning construction, there is a concern that strand slippage may occur if the load on the anchor increases above the initial lock-off load.Corrosion protection grout, placed after the anchor is locked off, fills the pocket and surrounds the strand and wedges. Some anchor installers believe that the grout will prevent the anchorage from developing additional capacity if the load increases above the initial lock-off load.The load-carrying capacity of an anchorage depends on several factors. Most important are: initial applied load, anchorage geometry, friction between wedge-anchorage-strand and condition of the contact surfaces.The ADSC Anchored Earth Retention Committee considers that the industry should know how wedges behave once the permanent strand anchors are stressed and grouted inside the transition pipe, between wedges and inside the grout cap."

Heap leaching in certain parts of the world, such as Chile's Atacama Desert, brings unique design problems in the form of possible large differential settlements of the foundation soils due to the dissolution of salts in northern Chile the soils often contain very high concentrations of soluble salts (nitrates, potassium, magnesium, and common sodium). When a leak in the liner occurs, the escaping solution dissolves these salts and triggers differential settlement. If the settlement is great enough, the geo-membrane tears, the leakage increases, triggering more differential settlement. The nitrate plants have experienced many occurrences of this phenomenon where a brine pond will undergo a sudden and complete loss of the impounded liquors. The authors present a simplified technique to quantify the differential settlement resulting from dissolution and provide a method which can be used to select a geo-membrane with suitable flexibility under axi-symmetric (multi-axial) load conditions to tolerate the predicted settlement. Domestic expenditures by the U.S. petroleum industry have exhibited distinctive shifts in emphasis over the past 20 years. From the end of World War II to 1955, expenditures for all phases of the industry expanded. Although over one-half of all expenditures were for production, the relative emphasis was changed after 1956-58 from production toward processing and marketing. The period 1967-69 marked the beginning of a return to emphasis on exploration and production. These trends in expenditure patterns are logical and rational when related to domestic and international economic conditions and to the widespread application of improved production technology. As the immense job of developing the oil resources of Alaska and other regions begins, the petroleum industry will continue to turn to external sources for working capital. Long-term debt will probably be the principal method of external financing through 1970, but a definite shift toward new common and preferred stocks will be made. Higher product prices may be sought by the petroleum industry, but the economics of crude-oil production, changes in the tax structure, and possible changes in the oil imports control program make the price structure of crude oil and crude-oil products unpredictable at the present time.

In this paper the performance effects of linear shaped charges will be discussed. Different sized charges were tested and reviewed based on their performance used with a typical detonation method vs. detonation with a line wave generator. The goal of the project was to determine if the linear shaped charge had better performance with an ideally linear wave moving through it, verses a swept wave that is currently used. A line wave generator is a flexible sheet explosive formed into a triangular shape with holes placed in strategic places to cause a detonation wave to become linear across the width of the triangle. A standard linear shape charge with a detonator in the side of the charge was be detonated against a witness plate to get a standard depth of penetration. A second standard linear shape charge with a detonator connected to the top of a line wave generator, the line wave generator placed on top of the linear shape charge, was be detonated against a witness plate to get a comparison depth of penetration. All charges had a standoff 1.5 times the width of the cavity, allowing the data to be compared to the control charge. Computer modeling was intended to be used to predict the results from testing these designs in the field. The actual results were compared among themselves.

La cuenca de Casma, Chimbote es una de las tres unidades que conforman el EUGEOSINCLINAL de la zona tectónica Chiclayo- Pisco, cuya estratigrafía se divide en Grupo Chimbote, Casma y Volcánico Calipuy, cuyas nuevas formaciones y unidades menores se designan con nombres de la localidad. En este sentido, el texto describe las unidades del umbral de Cuenca, como las rocas instrusivas del "Batolito de la Costa" de amplia distribución. Así también la cuenca posee yacimientos metálicos y no métalicos, siendo de importancia los primeros para el desarrollo siderúrgico. Entre estos tenemos las calizas dolomíticas, carbón, antracita, etc.

NORMALLY, the Britannia ore mixture contains chalcopyrite and pyrite as the chief sulfide minerals, together with minor amounts of gold and silver and a low zinc content. Reduction is accomplished by jaw crushers underground, followed at the concentrating plant by Symons cone crushers, rolls, and ball mills. The standard flotation practice, evolved during several years of experimentation, provided for bulk flotation of the two sulfides, after primary grinding to only approximately 35 mesh, followed by regrinding of the bulk concentrate, with subsequent separation of the chalcopyrite and pyrite to make a marketable concentrate of each mineral. This so-called standard milling practice has previously been described in detail in U. S. Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6619. A modification will he discussed here. In the face of a constantly increasing world surplus of copper and a steadily falling price during 1930 and 1931, it was obviously undesirable to continue unprofitable production of large quantities of this metal. The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A., approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora Mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike sub-district of the Carlin Trend, a northwest alignment of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin Trend includes over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 65 million ounces of gold (Figure 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike sub-district, there are seven major deposits: Betze, Lower Post, Post, Genesis, Bluestar, Purple Vein and Deep Star, plus numerous smaller deposits (Figure 2). Production, reserves and resources for the sub-district are approximately 40 million ounces. Betze and Purple Vein are located on property controlled by Barrick Goldstrike Mines and Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property. Post, Lower Post and Deep Star occur both on Barrick and Newmont property.
