Many mining wastes, especially those from the metal mining industry, have traditionally been treated as a matter of little or no value and in practice a cost burden. Some wastes, due to their reactivity characteristics, have emergent values that go beyond purely economic and into the environmentally beneficial realm. This paper discusses the changing paradigm of mine waste management. Such fundamental parameters such as cut off grade, and strip ratio, are positively impacted by the revaluation of waste rock material. Mine rock waste can now be seen as a commodity of value, similar to the underlying ore being mined and influences the economic performance of suitable projects. This valuable material can be used for industrial purposes including acid neutralization as well as the capture and long-term disposal of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. The Turnagain Nickel project, located in northern British Columbia serves as an example of how waste rock material can become an important matrix for carbon capture and sequestration and can benefit economically from it. By producing material that has emergent economic value as well as carbon capture and sequestration capabilities, the sequestration matrix producer is a beneficiary of new carbon credits that have a market value and is looked upon favourably by regulatory authorities and affected stakeholders.

"Selective comminution (SC) is beneficial for the treatment of primary raw materials, especially if it is utilized in the pre-concentration process. Pre-concentration processes are applied in mineral processing to relieve subsequent processes and to achieve a higher efficiency. SC is also a promising method for the treatment of low-grade ores and waste dumps. With SC, various components can be separated such as valuable minerals from waste, ore from wall rock and different ore varieties within a deposit. SC is a property of a comminution system and leads either to a preferred crack propagation in one component (called preferential breakage) or to a preferred crack propagation along the grain boundaries (called interfacial breakage). SC results from different comminution behavior of various components in the feed material. For mechanical comminution, the preferential breakage seems to be the most important case of SC. Hereby SC generates only the difference in the particle size which can finally be used as a sorting parameter. A sorting process which uses SC depends on three parts: the feed material, the comminution machine and the separation machine. The feed material defines the potential for SC. Differences in properties like strength, toughness and density which are related to comminution are often used. The comminution machine has to exploit this potential. The extent of the exploitation can be influenced by the machine design, material and operational parameters. After SC, the various components are still combined in the product. So ultimately, a separation machine is needed. At preferential breakage, a simple screening machine can be used. The basics about SC will be presented at first. This contains relationships between material properties, the kind of loading in the comminution machine and the SC effect. These basics can be used for example to exploit a potential to SC for a pre-concentration step or to avoid the SC for a higher efficiency of subsequent processes. Based on recent investigations with impact load, the influence of the important parameters compressive strength, density, particle size and impact velocity to the SC will be shown, using examples of lead-zinc ore comminution and fluorspar processing."

The traditional approach for the beneficiation of South African siliceous sedimentary phosphate ores has been reverse cationic flotation. The robustness of this approach, however, has been a concern due to its sensitivity to parameters such as slimes content, headgrade ( P2O5 and SiO2 content), reagent dosages and conditioning times. The phosphate mineralisation for the ore body under investigation is predominantly carbonate fluorapatite composed of mainly quartz and apatite and minor amounts of chlorite, ilmenite and carbonates. Beneficiation of low grade sedimentary ores containing calcareous impurities, such as calcite and/or dolomite in addition to siliceous gangue, is required to meet the increasing demand; therefore, much research has been carried out to find an alternative technique to beneficiate this material. This paper investigates traditional flotation approaches versus the currently adopted ‘Crago Process’. Comparative results are presented in terms of upgrade potential for the production of concentrate rock for downstream applications. The novelty of the ‘Crago Process’ lies in its double stage approach, i.e. direct fatty acid flotation followed by reverse cationic amine flotation. The Crago process was able to achieve higher upgrades reporting at 32.1% P2O5 compared to conventional cationic flotation only achieving grades of 18.5% P2O5. Furthermore, the recovery gain was 3%.

The report shows the sensitivity that nine different cash-flow factors have on the discounted rate of return calculated from feasibiliity- studies on potenital open-pit orebodies of silver, copper, and uranium. Cash-flow factors of "grade", "market value", and "recovery" are. the most sensitive. This verifies the need of reliable estimates for these factors. The cost of evaluation of "preproduction cost" is the least sensitive. This gives credence to the fact that more consideration should be given to compiling sufficient data, as the largest financial losses are not in the cost of evaluation but rather in the abandonment of an unprofitable mining operation after a commitment of capital is made on the basis of an incomplete evaluation. Sensitivity analysis of cash-flow factors enhances evaluation programs by disciplining the collection of data and allowing more realistic distribution of evaluation monies.

Electrowinning molybdenum from oxide feed materials dissolved in a variety of molten baths was investigated . A NaCl - NaF - Na₂ B₁ O -Mo0, system operating at 1,000 ° C in a cell without a protective atmosphere gave the best current efficiency , metal - to - cathode adherence , and purity of electrowon Technical - grade molybdic oxide , containing associated impurities of aluminum , iron , copper , silicon , and tungsten in combined quantities of 10 percent , was used as feed material to produce dendritic crystals of molybdenum metal containing less than 0.5 percent total base metal , carbon , and oxygen impurities . Arc - melting molybdenum electrowon from either chemically pure or commercial - grade Mo0, produced ingots that contained less than 0.1 percent total impurities and had hardness readings of 168 to 200 Vhn .

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The undercut-and-fill method of mining was devel¬oped by Inco Ltd. in the Sudbury district of Ontario, Canada, to deal with abnormal ground conditions en¬countered in pillar recovery. Although it is now some¬times utilized as a primary stoping method, the main application continues to be in pillar recovery. In any mining method in which fill is employed, pillar systems tend to fail gradually as stoping pro¬gresses. As a result, most pillars are completely destressed and broken by the time pillar recovery com¬mences. Control of the back in such ground becomes a major problem and is contingent on local conditions as they exist in the workplace. In most mining methods, operations such as drilling, blasting, slushing, and tim¬bering can be readily assessed and the mining cycle pre¬dicted. However, in the mining of pillars with overhand methods, the time and effort required to maintain a safe back varies to a quite unpredictable extent. For years the square-set method was the most effective means available for pillar recovery. However, in areas where bad ground was encountered, square setting was a costly and sometimes hazardous method. As the tonnage mined from pillars increased, it was apparent that a safer and less expensive approach was required. Past experience indicated that the best way to deal with broken ground was to mine from the top down. Top slicing systems were examined but were rejected due to the major sub¬sidence which resulted. However, ideas generated from studying top slicing finally developed into the present method of undercut-and-fill. This method, which has almost completely replaced square-set mining, exhibits reduced costs, has improved safety and efficiency, elimi¬nates the factor of bad ground overhead, and allows a closer prediction of the actual mining cycle. The result is more accurate scheduling of pillar production. This factor is of increasing importance as the tonnage from pillar recovery increases in relation to total mine pro¬duction. Undercut-and-fill is a method of extracting a block of ore by mining successive cuts, working from the top down. After a cut of ore is completely mined out, lami¬nated timber stringers are constructed along the sides for the full length of the cut. Round logs covered by a wire screen are laid across the stringers to form a mat. The cut is then tightly filled with hydraulically placed cemented sand fill. Mining is then resumed on the cut immediately below the mat. As the cut advances, the timber stringers are supported by round timber posts seated on the solid bottom of the cut. Drilling, blasting, muck removal, and timbering operations are repeated until all the ore in the cut has been removed. At this time, another log mat is laid and the cut is filled. This sequence is continued until the block has been mined from level to level. The basic principles of undercut-and-fill can be adapted to a variety of mining situations. It can be applied transversely or longitudinally in ore bodies of varying width, that dip from vertical to flat lying. The method can be applied using conventional equipment or it can be mechanized through the introduction of small diesel or air-powered units for muck removal. Undercut¬and-fill is a selective method, ore recovery is high, and dilution can be controlled to an acceptable level. How¬ever, it is a high-cost, labor-intensive method and as such its use is restricted to areas where the less costly meth¬ods of ground support are not successful or where bulk mining methods are not adaptable. One basic require¬ment for undercut-and-fill is an adequate source of hydraulically placed cemented sand fill and a dependable sand plant and distribution system. The success of the undercut method is to a large degree dependent on the competence of the fill placed in each of the successive cuts. In theory, the weight of the fill on each cut is supported in part by the cemented sand itself as it binds to the rough sides of the mined¬out areas next to the pillar walls, and in part by the tim¬ber support. As mining progresses beneath the mat, a downward pressure is exerted within the cemented fill and a voussoir arch develops above the mat, across the full width of the cut. This supports the major portion of the load. The log mat and posts have a double func¬tion in that they carry the remaining weight not sup¬ported by the voussoir arch and in addition prevent any pronounced settling of the fill mass. Excessive settling breaks the bond between the cemented fill and the pillar walls, eliminating the arch effect and transferring the entire load to the mat and posts. The theory of a voussoir arch forming within the cemented sand fill mass is substantiated in practice by the fact that pillars have been mined from level to level with no more significant weight on the bottom cuts than was experienced on the top cuts. In effect, as mining progresses downward, there is no additional transfer of weight from previous cuts to the cut being mined. APPLICATION OF UNDERCUT-AND-FILL Because of their size, the Sudbury ore bodies are, for the most part, mined transversely and, to a considerable extent, by filling methods. Transverse stoping blocks are designed with 9-m (30-ft) crown pillars established be¬low each level and with stopes separated by vertical rib pillars. In past years, floor pillars were left above the level as well, but present practice favors the silling of primary stopes at the base of the rail. Rib pillars are designed to meet the ground control requirements of the primary stoping methods. Local conditions and past experience generally dictate their size. Historically, since the square-set method was to be used for recovery, rib pillars were designed to accommo¬date standard 1.7-m (5'h-ft) sets. A typical rib pillar is four sets wide [6.7 m (22 ft)] when located between two square-set or cut-and-fill stopes having a width of 8.4 m (27.5 ft). On December 16, the General Services Administration (GSA) suspended weekly sales of surplus silver from the national defense stockpile because Congress approved the Defense Appropriation Act, which contained an amendment to halt silver sales. The amendment, introduced by Senator James A. McClure (R., Idaho), prohibits sales for 6 months while the impact of the sales and alternative methods of disposal are evaluated. The GSA sold 2 million troy ounces since sales started October 14. 46.5 million troy ounces were authorized to be sold during this fiscal year and an additional 58.6 million troy ounces were authorized to be sold over the following two fiscal years. The stockpile held 139.5 million troy ounces of silver when sales began in October. Brush Wellman, Inc., a vertically integrated producer of beryllium products announced plans to modify its Delta, Utah beryllium concentrate processing facility to utilize beryllium concentrates containing as little as 7% beryllium oxide. The company plans to invest $2.5 million for this modification with completion expected in mid-1983. Implementation of this plan to consume lower grade beryllium minerals will significantly increase world reserves of beryllium concentrates.

STEEPROCK LAKE (Figure 1) lies about two miles north of Atikokan, a village approximately one hundred and forty miles west of Fort William and one hundred miles east of Fort Frances on the Canadian National railway. The possible presence of hematite beneath the waters of Middle arm was inferred by early geological investigators (1890-1903) from the dense hematite float found on the southerly shores of this portion of the lake (1). A dip-needle survey of Middle arm, undertaken in the winter of 1930-31 by J. G. Cross, indicated two areas of high magnetic attraction which Mr. Cross thought might be due to magnetic iron oxides associated with possible hematite bodies. Bedrock could not be reached by the ineffectual hand-drilling so courageously attempted, and further work was abandoned. It was not until 1937 that Mr. Jos. Errington, of Toronto, convinced of the possibilities, determined to support Mr. Cross to the extent of several thousand feet of drilling. During the winter of 1937-38, holes Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 13 were put down (see Figure 1). The first four of these holes demonstrated that the areas of magnetic attraction outlined by the dip-needle survey east of the Narrows and southwest of Elbow point were due to ash rock (2). As a result, Mr. Cross decided to investigate the bordering areas of low magnetic attraction and selected a location near the high ferruginous lime (3) point in the northeast of Middle arm. Dense, hard hematite beneath approximately 350 feet of water and clay was struck in the first hole, and, before the end of the winter's drilling, hematite had been encountered in holes Nos. 6 to 13 along a straight line 700 feet in length (see Figure 1). In the meantime, the Steerola ( 4) Exploration Company had been formed to continue development and already, in the spring of 1938, W. D. Neeland, the Company geologist, had come to the conclusion that the most probable location for possible hematite was at the ash-lime contact. Accordingly, during the summer, drilling was continued off-shore in holes Nos. 15, 25, and 27 (see Figure 2) toward possible hematite bodies inferred by Mr. Neeland.

This paper discusses cone penetration test correlations for loose gold tailings that were developed within a critical state soil mechanics framework. The development of a new calibration chamber for cone penetration testing that consists of a modified triaxial cell is described. Some of the early development and commissioning issues that were encountered, as well as the solutions adopted are outlined, including the system to prepare the samples and to acquire high-quality data from the testing. Also, the triaxial laboratory testing required to achieve the critical state line is described, including some of the basic precautions considered necessary as good practice. Additionally, the system adopted for volume tracking of the calibration chamber sample is described, which is essential for ensuring a reliable state parameter comparison against the acquired cone penetration test data. Finally, some laboratory test data from the calibration chamber is plotted against the soil behaviour type charts currently available from various authors.

"Detailed characterization and improved recovery of a micro-fine, low-grade refractory gold ore from a beneficiation plant in Yunnan Province, China, was investigated. Different analytical techniques, such as videlicet size analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and mineral analysis by a Mineral Liberation Analyser, were used for mineralogical characterization of the ore. This paper describes an experimental study on the effect of the grinding fineness and the use of various flotation reagent regimes involving collectors, depressors, and activators on the flotation behaviour of micro-fine auriferous pyrite. Two-stage flotation resulted in high gold grade (32.71 g/t) and gold recovery (80.02%) of the bulk gold concentrate. This process opens the possibilities of maximizing Au recoveries in a micro-fine low-grade refractory gold ore where low recoveries are common.INTRODUCTIONWith the rapid development of the gold industry, refractory gold ores are becoming increasingly important resources for gold production (O’Connor & Dunne, 1994; Agorhom, Skinner, & Zanin, 2012). Among these refractory gold ores, sulfur and micro-grained native gold ores represent a significant challenge, since they are not amenable to gold recovery by direct cyanidation. The gold contained in this type of ore is very finely disseminated and encapsulated in sulfides, which makes it inaccessible to the cyanide solution during direct cyanidation (Bulatovic, 1997; Allan & Woodcock, 2001). Autoclave pressure oxidation (AC POX) of the sulfide ore and subsequent cyanidation is a common technology used to recover the gold in such types of ore. Flotation is often used as a pre-treatment method to refractory gold ore (Monte Lins, & Oliveira, 1997).As the gold-carrier minerals are usually finely disseminated (sometimes under 10 µm) and intimately associated with gangue minerals, a fine grind is necessary to get a high degree of liberation. At the same time, the fine grind usually causes the production of significant quantities of slimes, which comprise easy-to-float gangue minerals such as mica, dolomite, and calcite. These mineral phases are naturally hydrophobic and float readily, competing with the value minerals in the froth phase and resulting in lower concentrate grades."

Success of the environmentally benign semiconductor manufacturing depends on the cost-effective integration of the principles of reduce, recover, reuse and recycle from source material to final product disposal. Increasing demand combined with current shortage of polysilicon provided unique opportunities to recover the silicon waste, caused by various defects, in wafer manufacturing process. Current practices relating to recovery and reuse of waste silicon produced, from crystal growth process to finally polished and epitaxially deposited silicon wafer, at Mitsubishi Silicon America is presented. Future plan to recycle the process generated silicon fines produced during the intermediate steps of the wafer manufacturing process such as grinding, slicing, lapping and polishing is also discussed.

The challenges facing the iron and steel industry on a global scale include depletion of resources, excessive energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The demand for iron products in Zimbabwe is increasing due to massive infrastructural development like the expansion and improvement of mines, transportation systems and water reticulation systems. In Zimbabwe, cast iron is mainly produced from recycling scrap metals. However, there is currently a shortage of scrap, which has resulted in the vandalism of state-owned properties such as bus terminals and railway wagons and lines. Nevertheless, Zimbabwe is rich in limonite ores, which are idle, and it is the aim of this research that this ore be effectively used to produce feed for the blast furnace. The Blast furnace is still the dominant route for producing cast iron where sintering and coking processes are the main routes for preparing the Blast furnace feed. Sintering limonite ore fines produce a product of poor grade because of the high value of loss on ignition that has a negative impact on Blast furnace efficiency. Furthermore, the sinter plant and the coke making plant are a source of huge environmental pollutants. Since low-grade Zimbabwean coal fines are also available in abundance, they were used in the preparation of the composite materials ensuring maximum utilisation of this resource. Results showed that the limonite ore-carbon composite pellets sample with the binary basicity ratio (CaO/SiO2) of about 0.27 and coal addition of 2.5 wt per cent achieved above the minimum physical quality requirements for pellet of drop number of at least 4, a dry compression strength greater than 2.2 kg/pellet and an indurated compression strength greater than 250 kg/pellet. Limestone was used as the binder avoiding the addition of more impurities from bentonite since the limonite ore has a high SiO2 content of about 8.78 wt per cent.

The main importance of acicular ferrite microstructures arises from their desired combination of mechanical properties in comparison with the bainite and ferrite-pearlite microstructures. Several factors affect the microstructural transition from bainite microstructure into the acicular ferrite one. As is well established any factor corrupting the prior austenitc grain boundaries nucleation potential, such as the thin layer of allotriomorph ferrite and the austenitc deformation inhomogenities may promote the acicular ferrite formation instead of bainite. Accordingly, this study deals with the effects of the aforementioned features on the acicular ferrite formation in low carbon microalloyed steel. The results indicate that the formation of strain-induced ferrite at the prior austenite grain boundaries accompanied by deformation inhomogenities in the austenite grains change the effectiveness of allotriomorph ferrite on acicular ferrite formation from active to inert one.

"INTRODUDTION Investigations by the Bureau of Mines have shown that the carbonizing properties of splint and bright coals may differ greatly. In a study of 55 coal columns selected from representative coals of the Appalachian region, Sprunk and coworkers 10/ compared various chemical and physical properties of splint and associated bright coals. Carbonization tests in the Fischer retort at 932°F. (500°C.) showed that, except for bright coals of high oxygen content, the coke residue from bright coal was much more swollen and cellular than that from splint. ·with one exception, agglutinating values determined by the Bureau of Mines test, were lower for splint than for associated bright coal.Because sorting of coal in quantity is tedious and time-consuming, separate types have not been carbonized by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) test, which requires 85- to 200 pound charges. However, this method has been used to determine the carbonizing properties of samples 0f bed layers that are composed largely of either splint or bright coal.4/ In these earlier tests, which were made at high temperatures on layer samples from the Elkhorn bed, Letcher County, Ky., the splint coal yielded more coke than the bright coal, and this coke was slightly stronger than that from the bright coal. The cokes from samples with large proportions of bright coal were more cellular or porous, as were the low-temperature cokes obtained from carbonization of separated samples of bright coal in the Fischer retort."

THIS communication describes a series of experiments in which dislocation etch pitting was used to ascertain the depth of damage in crystals which were mechanically polished or which were cut with either a commercial metallographic cut-off wheel,* a com- All specimens were cut from single crystals of American Smelting and Refining Co. 99.999+ pct pure copper which were grown from the melt by the Bridge-man technique. The test specimens were disks, with faces being (111) planes and the disk axis a (111) direction. The disks were annealed in a vacuum of 10-5 Torr for 24 hr at 950°C prior to cutting or polishing and were given a light electropolishing in an ortho-phosphoric acid bath before etch pitting. Both Youngs1 and Livingston's2 reagents were used for etch pitting and the reagents gave identical quantitative results; however Livingston's reagent produced less staining and so all photomicrographs shown are of {111) surfaces etched with this solution. The surface of the annealed crystals showed well-defined subboundaries and a density of dislocations of about 1 X 106 per sq cm excluding those present in subboundaries, Fig. 1. The depth of cold work produced during mechanical polishing was determined after an annealed specimen was mounted in a paraffin holding block to protect it from extraneous damage. The exposed (111) surface was ground on metallographic papers and then polished on billiard cloth through 0.05-p alumina abrasive. It was necessary to remove about 0.3 mm (-0.01 in.) to obtain a structure representative of the annealed sur- face, indicating that the crystal was damaged to this depth during mechanical polishing. In-hole detonation pressure measurements are unusual in the production environment of a mining operation, partly owing to the hostile conditions to which recording equipment and pertinent probes must be subjected and, partly by the constraints of the production cycle. In recent decades, detonation pressure measurement techniques have been developed using low carbon resistors (LCR)-based gauges. They are cheap, relatively easy-to-operate, robust and with a high percentage of success in both open-pit and underground mining. Detonation pressure measurements are extremely important when carrying out numerical modelling to simulate explosive induced vibrations, since simulation results are highly dependent on the pressure-time history applied on the blasthole wall. Analytical equations have typically been used to model the pressure-time history; however, they usually do not adequately represent the behaviour of the explosive in terms of: peak pressure reached, rise time, mean frequency, decay and shape of the signal. Experimental records may be directly used instead of utilizing synthetic signals if they are available. In this work, (LCR)-based gauges are used to measure detonation pressure inside a production blasthole. The operation principle of the gauges utilized and the instrumentation layout is described in detail. A flexible resolution USB oscilloscope with high sampling rate has been used to catch the elusive pressure peak event. Measurements were carried out in production blasts fired with ANFO (0.86 g/cm3) in an underground mine––this also includes velocity of detonation (VOD) records––. A procedure based on the shock impedance matching has been developed to calculate the detonation pressure due to the characteristics of the gauges prevent its direct measurement. Detonation pressures obtained range from 1.71 to 2.97 GPa (248.01 to 430.76 ksi) which are in line with pressures calculated from the VOD records. Mean frequency and rise time analysis shows that 2 of 3 signals cannot be described using typical analytical equations.

(New York Meeting, February, 1912 THE U. S. Geological Survey, I believe, has almost completed a study of the Harney Peak quadrangle, preliminary to the publication of a report on that, district. As I was engaged for some months on an investigation of the mode of occurrence of the ore-bearing formation in this area, it has seemed to me timely to make public the results of my study, as a contribution to the consideration of this subject. It seems scarcely necessary to describe the locality and general geology of the Black hills of South Dakota, for since 1846 many have contributed information concerning this region, some of the reports bearing such well-known names as those of Walter P. Jenney, Henry Newton, S. F. Emmons, and C. R. Van Hise, while we have only to glance at Bulletin No. 4 of the South Dakota School of Mines, in which Prof. C. C. O'Harra, of that institution, has given us a bibliography of contributions to the geography and geology of the section, to find that other well-known men have studied the district, and have given us the benefit of their researches. The U. S. Geological Survey has made geological maps of nearly the whole of the Black hills, the only quadrangle yet to be completed being, as stated, the Harney Peak district. During the late summer and autnmn of 1910, it was my lot to examine and report. on a considerable area in this neighborhood, which once had been prospected, and in some cases exploited, for tin. This paper gives an account of certain geological phenomena, noted at that time, which greatly influenced my conclnsions. The predominating formation of the district is pre-Cambrian, represented by a highly-cleaved mica-schist, usually very garnetiferous, and sometimes hornblendic. The reduction of iron ores by solid carbon, when both are agglomerated together in the form of pellets, has important kinetic advantages. Although several studies have been performed on the subject, some points on the controlling mechanisms need clarification. There is a big scatter in the values of the apparent activation energy reported in the literature, and this may be due to factors like heat transfer, flow of gases in the reduction system, pellet size and composition. This work is concerned with the effect of several parameters on the reaction rate. The parameters studied were temperature (in the range 1173 K to 1423 K), carbon type (coke or charcoal), pellet size, gas flow rate, catalyst action of the produced metallic iron and added sodium carbonate. It has been shown that the values of the apparent activation energy can change according to the reduction conditions employed, and hence any modeling effort will have to take account of these parameters. Exxon is reclaiming an 80 hectare (200 acre) Wyoming uranium tailings basin (10 Mt) in accordance with U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission requirements. The reclamation plan is designed to control the tailings and their radioactive emissions for at least 1000 years. Rigorous modeling and analyses of potential erosion by wind and water were used in planning. The use of riprap was minimized and the need for long term reclamation maintenance was eliminated. The resulting design is similar to erosionally stable regions created by nature. The concepts used in the design and implantation have wider reclamation application.

The direct dissolution of a typical zinc sulfide flotation concentrate by elevated temperature and pressure leaching was investigated. The concentrate assayed about 55 percent Zn, 32 percent S, 6 percent Fe, and 1 percent Pb and contained minor quantities of copper and precious metals. The influence of various factors on the dissolution of the zinc in acidic and ammoniacal pulps when using oxygen as the oxidant was determined. The tests revealed that the sphalerite was difficult to oxidize. Complete dissolution of the mineral required vigorous and intimate nixing of the gaseous, liquid, and sold phases. The addition of pyrite or sulfuric acid to water slurries of the concentrate was required to obtain a high zinc extraction when leaching under acidic conditions. The quantity of pyrite and acid used was about 0.125 and 0.25 pound, respectively, per pound of zinc sulfide contained in the leach charge. In tests with acid, about 96 percent of the zinc was extracted from the concentrate in 1 hour at 200° C. when the oxygen partial pressure was 75 pounds per square inch gage or higher. Leaching with a continuous flow of air as the oxidant gave results that were almost as good as those obtained when oxygen was used, In tests with air fed through the autoclave at 320 liters per hour, 95 percent of the zinc was dissolved in 1 hour, Acid leach solutions assaying approximately 58 grams Zn per liter and containing Fe, Ni, Cr, and Cu impurities were produced in the better tests. The leached residue consisted essentially of red iron oxide together with substantially all of the lead and precious metals.
