Magnesium borates of varying compositions and properties are synthesized using different reagents and methods for the possible potential uses as termoluminescent material, anti-wear and anti-friction additive, fire retardant, catalyst for the conversion of hydrocarbons, whisker material and ferroelastic material. In the current work, the conditions for synthesizing MgB4O7 compound by high-temperature solid-state reactions were investigated using boric acid and magnesium oxide as the starting materials. The MgO:B2O3 mole ratios applied in the experiments were 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and the thermal behaviours of each mixture were studied between 25~1200°C by TG/DTA analyses under static air atmosphere to find out the probable formation temperature of MgB4O7 phase. Considering TG/DTA results, freshly prepared boric acid and magnesium oxide solid mixtures were heated at predeter-mined temperatures and the phases were identified by XRD analyses. Accordingly, MgO:B2O3 mole ratio of 1:2, heating temperature of 950°C and a reaction time of 2 hours were selected as the optimum conditions for the formation of maximum amounts of MgB4O7. After obtaining solids prepared at the pre-determined optimum conditions, their chemical composition, IR spectrum, TG/DTA pattern, B.E.T. surface area value, particle size distribution and SEM images were deter-mined to point out the possible use areas. Experimental results showed that it was not possible to obtain pure product at the optimum conditions due to formation of minor amounts of t-Mg2B2O5 and the presence of some unreacted B2O3. The product synthesized has the potential for use as a corrosion inhibitor on some metal surfaces.

The principal official test performed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the permissibility of coal-mine explosives, commonly referred to as the gallery test, has been in use at the Bruceton station for many years (2, 16).4/ In this test the explosive under study is loaded into the borehole of a steel cannon and fired into a flammable mixture of natural gas and air or natural gas, air, and coal dust. To meet the requirements for permissibility, the explosive must not ignite the gas mixture under the conditions of the test. There is little doubt that these tests have succeeded in the main objective, namely, to screen the relatively safe from the relatively hazardous explosives. It has been generally conceded that adoption of permissible explosives by the coal-mining industry in the United States has substantially reduced the frequency of disastrous underground explosions caused by blasting. In recent years, however, research workers planning programs for improving the safety of coal-mine explosives have felt the growing need of a more quantitative method for measuring the incendivity of explosives based on a better understanding of the role of the important variables in the gallery tests, Accordingly, it was decided to apply certain statistical methods and techniques to the gallery test to develop it into a more precise tool for evaluating permissible explosives. One of the first and more important methods applied for this purpose was the up-and-down technique (6,7,17), It was demonstrated (14,15) that the weight of the explosive charge directly affects the ignition probability of the natural gas-air atmosphere and that the curve of ignition probability versus charge weight is a cumulative normal curve. Following these experiments, a program, still in progress, was set up to study how the addition of sodium chloride to various permissible-type ex-plosives affects their incendivity. This paper describes a mineral dressing process for the upgrading of tin ores. The process described is called 'agglomeration' and. is similar in many respects to flotation. Many variables have been examined experimentally both on batch and continuous operations and are reported upon herein... Using a Mt. Pleasant tin ore, assaying 0.5% Sn, an upgrading to 8% Sn, with a recovery of 95% could be obtained by this process.

An equation is derived for the rate of reaction of a sphere of metal oxide in a restricted enclosure through which a reducing gas is flowing . The equation takes into consideration the reaction rate coefficient , transport through the gas and through the porous shell of reduced oxide , the rate of gas flow , and the volume of the enclosure . The equation serves as a model for predicting the course of reduction of a particle of metal oxide in a shaft furnace .

Recent sinkhole activity in carbonate terranes of Alabama has resulted in damage to transportation lines, structures, utility lines, and property in general. Active sinkhole development and subsidence has been well documented in Alabama, Florida, Pennsylvania, and South Africa. An excellent example of the potential danger resulting from this activity is the spectacular collapse under a South African gold ore crusher plant that resulted in the death of 29 men in 1962. Due to the severity of the problem in certain localized areas in Alabama, a detailed investigation is being undertaken by the Geological Survey of Alabama and the U. S. Geological Survey. One of the most promising techniques is the application of aerial photography and thermal infrared imagery. Conventional and modern remote-sensing techniques are being used in Alabama to locate and define areas of sinkhole activity and to determine which areas are most prone to its occurrence.

MANY methods for the determination of gold or silver, or both, in cyanide solutions have been published, which with care in manipulation, and modification in some cases, will give results that are satisfactory. It is possible to classify or group these methods as follows: 1. Evaporating the solution in a porcelain or agate-ware dish containing litharge,1 or in a "boat" made of lead foil. 2. Forming a lead sponge containing the precious metals by means of zinc shavings,2 zinc dust,3 or a piece of aluminum.4 3. Decomposing the cyanide solution with an acid and precipitating the precious metals by the use of one or a combination of some of the following: Copper sulphate,5 sodium sulphite,6 hydrogen sulphide,7 cement copper.8 4. Precipitating the silver by zinc dust held in a Hooch crucible and determination with a standard solution of sulphocyanate.9 5. Electrolysis.10 6. Colorimetry.11

DURING the last ten years, in the effort to save manpower and costs, methods of drilling and blasting in Sweden have changed and developed in a revolutionary manner. These developments have been accompanied by extensive alterations in methods of tunneling and in mining technique. Since the end of the 1940's there has been a 100 pct change-over in Sweden to the use of tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. Both investigations and practical results have shown clearly that a tungsten carbide chisel bit fastened directly on the drill steel is the most economical for Swedish conditions. This applies to drill steel up to the longest size it is practical to handle. In terms of drilling footage, durability of the drill steel and the tungsten carbide bit is generally the same. In this respect, therefore, a detachable bit offers no advantage over integral steel. Transportation of integral steel to the grinding plant, instead of detachable bits only, involves heavier work, but this is counteracted by placing grinding plants closer together or by grinding at the working place itself. The drilling rate with integral steel is higher, the trouble of changing bits is avoided, and the difficulties which always arise with joints are eliminated. At present steel dimensions are usually 7/8 in. with a shank 41/4 in. long, whereas the international standard shank was formerly 31/4 in. The longer shank renders possible a better guide control of the steel and consequently longer life for the rotation chuck and the water-flushing pipe. After extensive experiments and investigations, agreement has been reached in Sweden on certain series of standards, shown in Table I. Other steel dimensions are, of course, available for special purposes. The standard drill-steel set begins with a 34-mm diam and has a length interval of 2 2/3 ft. On the other hand, for ordinary drifting it has been proved more economical to use greater length intervals on the steel, so only one steel change is required for a 61/2-ft round. Moreover, owing to the relatively close hole spacing necessary in a drift round, it has been possible to reduce the diameters of the tungsten carbide bits. This results in faster and cheaper drilling. As shown by the table, the lengths of drill steels for normal drifting are 33/4 ft and 71/2 ft, with 29 and 28-mm diam bits. During the last few years operators have begun to use 3/4-in. drill steel in place of the 7/8-in. drill steel chiefly employed earlier. When the finely bedded shale frequently encountered over coal seams experiences a separation, the material below the separation must behave like a beam or plate in that it must resist both bending and shear. Be-cause of the weakness in interlaminar shear inherent in such strata, shear deflections that are usually ignored in isotropic beam theory may account for a significant part of the total roof sag. Similarly, when a roof truss is installed in such a roof the upward displacement reducing the sag will have components due to shear as well as bending. Questions asked by mine operators about the installation of roof trusses frequently deal with optimum position, slope, and initial tension of the inclined chords. This Bureau of Mines report examines the effects of those chord parameters on the strain energy of both shear and bending and offers optimum values that will minimize the total strain energy of the immediate roof. Design charts are provided, several design examples are included, and the results are compared with current practice. The effects of in situ stresses are investigated and are shown to be equivalent to an additional load on the beam.

The Alligator Ridge Mine is located 70 miles northwest of Ely in White Pine County, Nevada. Development of the mine began in the late 1970's as a joint venture between Amselco Minerals, Inc. and Occidental Minerals Corporation, with Amselco as the operating partner. Early in 1983 Nerco Minerals Company acquired Occidental's share of the property. The mine and ore processing facility have operated at capacity since 1981 producing 680,000 tonnes of ore and 1,900 kg of gold per year. The gold ore deposits at Alligator Ridge consist of disseminated micron-size gold particles in a silicified siltstone matrix. The deposit comprises three separate but adjacent areas of mineralization that are designated as Vantage 1, Vantage 2, and Vantage 3 after the name of the basin in which the deposits lie.

"Boiling respirable quartz dust in water for 10 to 40 minutes decreases the cytotoxicity for both erythrocyte hemolytic potential and pulmonary macrophage release of lactate dehydrogenase in vitro. The potential is reduced to near zero in the boiling concentration range of 1 to 10 mg quartz per ml water in boiling times of 20 to 40 minutes. Below this range the detoxification occurs over a longer boiling time. Above this range the hemolytic potential remaining after 40 minutes of boiling approaches native quartz potential with increasing concentration up to 30 mg quartz per ml water. Replacing the media with fresh at the midpoint of boiling results in full detoxification through 20 mg per ml. Pre—boiling the medium with quartz or silica gel reduces the effect of subsequently boiling test samples. Detoxification persists after mild drying at 110 C for 8 hours, and persists after three days of resuspension in water at room temperature. Additional data on persistence of the effect, on the use of acidic and basic media treatment, and on surface analyses are presented, with a discussion of a working hypothesis and research needs.IntroductionResearch underway to determine interactions of quarts and other mineral dust surfaces with pulmonary fluids and alveolar macrophages in culture led to the observation that when dusts were autoclaved in aqueous suspension, their cytotoxic effects on macrophages wore suppressed, in some cases fully and even after several days incubation with the cells. This finding was in direct contradiction to earlier results from both short term macrophage lysosaal enzyme release assays, as well as longer term cytotoxicity assays from macrophages in culture; in those studies, dusts were steam autoclaved at 121 121 ºC with no liquid water but with steam present. (1,2) However detoxification under boiling conditions has been reported in other research.(3). It was decided to use the hemolysis assay to further investigate these findings, because of its sensitivity, simplicity and cost."

"SUMMARYThis report is one of a series giving results of laboratory and pilot-plant investigations of the concentration of western manganese ores begun in December 1940. Data given summarize results of laboratory investigation of three samples of complex oxide manganese ores from the Madeline property, Lake View, and Victory claims, Clallam County (Olympic Peninsula), Wash. The samples represented an extremely intimate and complex association of manga¬nese oxide minerals with silica and iron.Owing to the complex nature of the ores, no effective concentration by ore-dressing methods was possible. No high-grade manganese concentrates were produced and the highest recovery at minimum accountable grade was only 55 percent on one of the ores tested.Since the Clallem County ores did not respond to ore-dressing methods, leaching processes were investigated, results of which are to be published in a separate report.INTRODUCTIONOre-beneficiation tests were conducted on three samples of manganese oxide ere from the Madeline, Lakeview, and Victory claims, Clallam County, Wash. The ores are extremely complex because of the unusually small size of manganese mineral particles, their mode of occurrence, and relationship to the gangue. None of the three ores was amenable to the production of high-grade manganese products by ore-dressing methods."

Falconbridge Ltd Raglan Mine has been in production since 1998 and has produced annually some 900 000T of ore grading 3.1% nickel, 0.9% copper and 0.06% cobalt. The mine is located in Nunavik, Northern Quebec. The current mine life is estimated at approximately 20 years. Reserves are composed of numerous small ore bodies situated across a 65 km strike length. Planning the extraction of the ten small mineralized zones represents a great challenge to optimize. The overall objective is to maximize the company?s return on net assets. Actual planning uses computerized technology tools like Automod and Mine2-4D, and a conventional discounted cash flow method (DCF) of calculating net present value (NPV). The complex setting of Raglan could benefit from advance valuation techniques such as the real options method (RO). This paper will present the characteristics if the mines that make it a good candidate to use RO to gain further insight.

Since 2008 rapid advances have been made in technologies for the sensing and sorting of ores, particularly copper, and copper-related ores. Advances include significant increases in the sensitivity and throughput, specifically in the area of bulk sorting. Such advances were not possible without contemporaneous advances in the understanding of copper orebodies, in particular the understanding and quantification of the heterogeneity required within an orebody to support an effective sort, regardless of the technology deployed to do this. This paper covers fundamental knowledge in the characterization of orebodies and their ores for sorting; relationships between measures of heterogeneity and sorting response; the design of bulk sorting systems that can exploit this heterogeneity to add value to copper operations; and, a quantification of the value that can be generated from bulk sorting at a case study mine. INTRODUCTION Society currently puts increasing pressure on industries to move towards cleaner and more efficient means of production, and the mining industry is no exception. Mining additionally faces other factors increasing the pressure to be more efficient: high-grade and easily accessible reserves have become largely depleted, therefore the mined grade at operations across most commodities, including and in particular copper, is decreasing. Additionally, the grade of new discoveries in the sector continues to decrease (Schodde, 2011). Factor in the high capital cost of processing facilities and the low levels of efficiency of current grinding circuits, and the situation for such mines becomes dire. Sorting, by maximizing the amount of ore extracted while simultaneously reducing the waste content in ore delivered to downstream processes (whether simply transport and crushing, or more sophisticated circuits such as grinding and flotation or leaching) has long been of interest to mining operations and projects struggling with low margins (Bamber, 2012). However, until recently sorting technologies that are both cost effective and effective at such high throughputs have not been commercially available.

"Workers at mineral processing facilities are often exposed to high levels of dust generated when ores are processed. Crushing, grinding, screening, and other processes generate large quantities of dust, which can exceed the threshold VALUES (prescribed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Many ores contain quartz (silica), which has been known to cause serious health problems in workers over time. Given the structure of mineral processing plants, the airflow regime is not coherent inside the building, which may lead to multiple recirculation zones. These recirculation zones can trap dust, and concentrations of dust can then rise over time. Therefore, there is a need to understand the airflow phenomenon that occur inside of mineral processing facilities and how these occurrences interact with the dust generation processes to identify zones of potentially high dust concentration. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling can give a better understanding of the airflow and help recommend designs and methods to mitigate the high dust concentrations in a mineral processing plant. This paper presents the CFD modeling of airflow inside of a mill building to demonstrate airflow patterns that will affect the generation and subsequent dispersion of dust due to crushing, grinding, and other activities. This study was conducted by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). INTRODUCTION In a mineral processing facility, minerals go through various mechanical processes in order to reduce their size for separation of economic minerals from gangue minerals to produce a final marketable product. This research, conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), focuses on ore mills in metal and nonmetal mining (MNM) operations, but the applicability of the approach will be valid for any large structure where workers are exposed to airborne contaminants. The processes of crushing, grinding, cleaning, drying, and product sizing in these facilities generate a large amount of dust, creating hazardous conditions for the workers in these facilities. This is highlighted by the fact that MSHA sampling data for the years 1997–2012 indicate that 12.3% and 15.9% of the gathered samples were over 100 µg/m3 for silica for metal and nonmetal mills, respectively [1]. Mineral processing operations typically use some type of engineering control to address their most significant dust sources. Engineering controls include such approaches as bag-house-type dust collectors, scrubbers, and electrostatic precipitation [2]."

Chemical Initiatives? Umbogintwini plant is the production facility of Chemical Initiatives? business. Umbogintwini?s J Plant manufactures sulphuric acid. The plant was designed and built by Simon Carves, and was commissioned in 1974. The plant was designed to produce 500 tons/day of Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) at maximum rates. The Sulphuric acid manufacturing is through the famous contact process whereby liquid Sulphur is injected through dried air in a burner operating at 1000 °C to form sulphur dioxide (10.5% SO2). The SO2 gas is then cooled in waste heat boiler no. 1 before being fed to a four pass converter which provides 99.5% SO2 conversion to sulphur trioxide (SO3). The SO3 gas is the absorbed by 98.5% H2SO4 through the inter-pass & final tower to make more concentrated acid and dilute it with water back to 98.5% H2SO4 in acid pump tanks and dispatched to storage tanks. The manufactured Sulphuric acid is supplied to a variety of industrial manufacturing customers includes Pulp & Paper industry, Mining industry, Chemical manufacturing industry etc.

Samples sourced from the Goldstrike property in Nevada USA, have been evaluated in terms of their preg-robbing capacity and the physical structure of the graphitic carbon component in the carbonaceous gold ore. The study highlights a wide range in preg-robbing capacity between samples collected from the Betze-Post open pit and Rodeo underground mine. The physical structure of the graphitic carbon was assessed using Raman spectroscopy, and is found to play an important role in influencing preg-robbing behaviour. Differences observed in the physical structure of graphitic carbon are thought to be the result of hydrothermal events that occurred at Goldstrike.

Since its development, the functional performance equation for ball milling (McIvor, 1988) has facilitated a new understanding of industrial circuit cause and effect relationships, leading to significant strides in operational performance. Success stories of this approach to plant circuit performance improvement are now too numerous to list. Finch and McIvor (circa 1986) also discovered that the functional performance mill grinding rate at the size of interest was the same cumulative grinding rate that is calculated from mill feed and discharge size distributions using a first-order rate equation. By calculating these cumulative grinding rates for all screen sizes, a complete ball mill model is generated (as used by Finch and Ramirez, 1981). Others in industry, Hinde and Kalala (2009), for example, have noted the same. Lacking the complexity needed to maintain their interest, most researchers have ignored this model, broadly opting instead for Epstein’s (1948) characterization of grinding as a chemical reaction, combining selection rate and breakage size distribution functions. The much simpler ball mill model has previously been incorporated into a proprietary circuit modeling program (McIvor, 2005) and used for plant improvement work (for example, see McIvor and Finch, 2007, and McIvor, 2014). Now, by combining this business-friendly ball mill model with optimization criteria from functional performance analysis, a circuit modeling system (including the needed supplementary steps to assure successful plant implementation of circuit design changes) is at the disposal of every plant metallurgist, grinding equipment/ material provider and circuit designer.
