"Quelques soixante-dix-sept plutons présents dans la Sous-Province de Pontiac et dans la partie centrale de la Sous-Province de I’Abitibi ont fait I ’objet d’une reconnaissance systématique. Ils ont été regroupes en huit suites plutoniques majeures et trois suites mineures à partir de critères géologiques et petro logiques. Parmi les suites majeures, quatre représentent I' activité intrusive la plus ancienne dans la région. L’une d' entre e/les est représentée par deux complexes anorthosito-gabbroi' ques lites et les trois autres comprennent les orthogneiss dioritiques a leucotonalitiques et les intrusions dons la composition varie de diurétique et granodioritique à leucotonalitique. Leur mise en place peut être pretectonique a syn ou tarditectonique; certains plutons sont synvolcaniques. Quelques data/ions U! Pb effectuées à propos de ces roches donnent des âges s' étalant entre 2 718 et 2 694 MA. Les données géochimiques indiquent la présence des deux lignées magmatiques, tholemique et calcoalcaline bien qu’il n'y ait aucune évidence de relations entre elles dans I' espace et dans le temps. Ces suites magmatiques différentes peuvent provenir soit d’une croute tholemique impliquée dans un processus de subduction soit directement du manteau.Les trois autres suites majeures comprenant des monzodiorites, des granodiorites et des monzonites ainsi que les deux suites mineures comprenant des syenites correspondent à un évènement intrusif plus jeunesse déroulant entre2 694 et2 680 MA. Ces roches sont syn, tarti a post tectoniques et sont enrichies en alcalins, Ba, Sr et terres rares legeres par rapport aux quatre suites précédentes. Leurs caractères chimiques prop res suggèrent qu' e/les proviennent d' une source différente par rapport à celle precedemment citee.La derniere suite plutonique majeure correspond a un monzogranite leucocrate, riche en pegmatite, également syn a tard tectonique, dont I' age n' est pas connu avec précision. ll représente le seul granite ""vrai"" de la région et dérive d’une anatexie soit des meta sédiments soit des granodiorites-tonalites plus anciennes. La troisième suite plutonique mineure correspond a quatre stocks de granodiorite porphyrique qui n’ont pas été étudiés en détail.ABSTRACTSevenly-sevenplutons have been identified in the east-centra/part of the Abitibi Subprovince and adjacent Pontiac Subprovince. These have been subdivided, on the basis of geological and petrological criteria, into eight major and three minor plutonic suite. Four of the major suite, which represent the oldest intrusive activity in the area, range in composition from dioritic-leucotonalitic orthogneisses to diorite-granodiorite/leucotonalite and include two layered anorthosite- gabbro complexes. Their time of emplacement ranges from pretectonic to syn-late-tectonic and some plutons are synvolcanic. U-Pb zircon ages for these rocks range from 2 718 to 2 694 Ma. Geochemical data indicate the presence of both calc-alkaline and tholeiitic magma series for these rocks although there is no evidence time and space relationships between the two. The different magma series also suggest the derivation of these rocks from two sources, either from subduced tholeiitic crust or directly from the mantle. Three major monzodiorite-granodiorite, monzonite, and two minor syenite suites comprise a younger inlrusive event ranging from 2 694 to 2 680 Ma in age. These rocks are syn-, late- to post-tectonica and, compared to the above four plutonic suites, are enriched in alkalis, Ba, Sr and light Rare Earth Elements.Their distinctive geochemistry suggests that these rocks were derived from a different source region than for the older plutonic suites. The remaining major plutonic suite consists of leucocratic, pegmatite-rich, monzogranite-granodiorite. These rocks are also syn- to late-tectonic but their ages are not known with precision. They are the only ""true"" granites in the area and were derived by the partial melting of either older"

Following the severe starch-dust explosion in the casting department of a large candy factory nearly 2 years ago, great interest has been shown in the explosive properties and the safe manufacture and handling of powdered starches. Under the auspices of the National Fire Protection Association, a committee has been formed to prepare a code aimed at preventing dust explosions in the confectionery industry. One objective of this code will be to reduce the explosion hazards of starches that are widely used for molding, dusting, and other candy-manufacturing processes. The explosibilities of starches and starch mixtures have been studied in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines and elsewhere. The results of the initial experiments made by the Bureau on 10 samples of cornstarch and mixtures of cornstarch with other materials have been published. In response to numerous requests for additional information, further laboratory studies have been conducted. Data have been obtained on the effects of dust concentration, particle size, moisture content, admixture of .calcium carbonate, and on the effect of oil treatment on the explosibility of cornstarch. The results of this investigation are summarized in this report.

Exploration record In preparing this paper, a list of world class discoveries prepared in 1983 has been updated. In both surveys, the following criteria were used in the definition of world class discoveries: • deposits that are continuously operated and consistently return a profit even in periods of low metal prices; • deposits large enough to significantly affect a medium sized corporation's profits; and • these deposits should be in the lower one-third cost per unit of metal produced for all similar deposits. Only 70 discoveries in the last 40 years qualified as world class deposits using these criteria. Unfortunately, this restricted population was too low to develop meaningful trends. The numbers were therefore enlarged to include all significant discoveries. The principal feature of a significant discovery is that its size and grade would yield more than $500 million in revenue using average metal prices for the last five years. A significant deposit should also meet some of the standards for a world class deposit. A tabulation of these deposits are shown in Table 1. The number of discoveries increased to 166 from 70 using the revised classification. The relationship between the number of discoveries per year and their location by continents was prepared from these data. Figure 1 shows the number of discoveries per year for the nonCommunist world. It also shows estimated and actual nonCommunist world exploration expenditures per year and the commodity price index. These data show that modern exploration started in the late 1940s, with the tempo picking up rapidly in the 1950s. The maximum discovery rate occurred in 1962. Thereafter, the discovery rate gradually declined to the present. This occurred despite a real increase in expenditures from about $200 million/a in 1955 (1982 constant dollars) to more than $900 million/a in 1980. Thus, these data suggest a significant decrease in the exploration success ratio (total exploration expenditures a year divided by the number of significant discoveries) in the last 20 years. As an example, $70 million was spent for each significant discovery in the early 1960s as compared with $225 million in the late 1970s (expressed in 1982 constant dollars). However, with the general declining trend of discoveries, one can perceive a more pronounced drop in 1973 and then a sudden increase in 1974, 1975, and 1976. This increase is probably related to the inflation of the 1970s that in turn created an environment for the explosion of commodity prices, as shown by the commodity price index on Fig. 1. Thereafter, the decline in discoveries resumed in 1975 until the present. Exploration performance by regions North American discoveries are shown in Fig. 2. The graph shows three pronounced high discovery peaks in 1962, 1975, and 1980-81.

PRIOR to 1936, the Ontario Refining Co. received all incoming blister copper from The International Nickel Company's smelter in the usual form of 460-lb. cakes, or slabs. These were received in open cars in lots of 250 pieces. At the refinery the cakes were unloaded onto narrow-gauge cars, for convenient handling and pickup by charging cranes. In March 1936, an investigation was started on the feasibility of transferring converter copper in the molten state from the smelter to the refinery anode furnaces, a distance of 1 ¼ miles. Although common in steel practice, the transportation of blister copper in this form had not previously been attempted and a preliminary study of the various factors involved was therefore necessary. For this purpose, a series of experiments was made in which molten copper, removed at different stages during the furnace cycle, was held in a small portable holding furnace. This vessel was essentially a refractory-lined steel cylinder provided with ports for filling and emptying, heated by an oil burner. Dimensions of the steel shell were 3 ft. 10 in. diameter by 7 ft. 3 in. long, and thickness of refractories depended on the design and combination used for the particular experiment. The vessel was filled with approximately 2 ½ tons of copper at a predetermined temperature, the lining having been preheated to a definite point by means of an oil burner. All openings were well luted and temperature readings were made every 15 min. by means of an immersion-type thermocouple. In this manner the rate of heat loss resulting with different refractory design could be developed. The ratio of exterior surface to weight of metal was taken into consideration in comparing the experimental results with what might be expected for a full-sized unit, and observations were also made on type and degree of slag accretion. It was not possible to get as much information on this latter point as desirable, but all evidence showed that the problem would be control of slag build-up rather than attack on refractories. Although rates of pneumoconiosis in coal miners have declined substantially in the United States since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, new cases continue to occur, including cases of rapidly progressive disease. In contrast, Australia's underground coal mining industry has reported few new cases of pneumoconiosis for more than 20 years. Mortality from coal workers' pneumoconiosis in official health statistics and the prevalence of pneumoconiosis among miners screened in X-ray surveillance programs are also lower in Australia. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was requested by both industry and labor stakeholders to examine this issue, with the ultimate aim of reducing the rate of pneumoconiosis among U.S. coal miners. A number of factors, including coal dust exposure, silica exposure and coal rank were examined as potential contributors to the above noted differences. Comparison of coal rank data from each country did not illuminate the issue. Air sample data from the coal mining industries in both countries show that coal dust levels in Australian mines are somewhat higher than those reported in similar U.S. mines; however, quartz exposure for Australian miners is lower than for many U.S. miners. If quartz is contributing to the greater number of cases of pneumoconiosis in the United States, more effective dust control measures, as well as an independent exposure standard for respirable quartz in coal mining, should be implemented to reduce this potentially disabling condition.

The Japanese government enforced the "Small Domestic Appliances (SDAs) Recycling Law" in 2013. The law targets metals such as Ta, Nd, Dy, Co, and W to be recycled. Considerable amounts of these minor rare metals are mounted on printed circuit boards (PCBs) of the SDAs and/or e-scrap (electric and electronic scraps). Although precious metals and copper can be recovered from the e-scrap in non-ferrous metals smelters, most of the minor rare metals report to the slag in these smelters in non-recoverable forms. These metals are often used in particular types of devices, and therefore it is possible to concentrate them by separating such devices before feeding to the smelters. In previous work we developed technology for "Device Separation" to concentrate several minor rare metals, but some problems remained, such as how to remove the PCBs from e-scrap bodies, and how to detach devices from PCBs after their removal from escrap bodies. This paper proposes a two-stage crushing process in which, firstly, PCBs are removed from the e-scrap body with various crushers, and secondly, devices are detached from the PCBs involving the application of elevated temperatures. It was found that in the first stage, crushers with physically flexible rotating media such as chains, which provide high collision probability with the sample and consume relatively low energy, can quite effectively separate the PCBs from the e-scrap bodies non-destructively. In the second stage, heating was found to be remarkably effective in helping to detach mounted devices from PCBs, also non-destructively. This paper will also discuss the detailed mechanism of the heating effect on the detachment of devices from PCBs.

Soft laminated iron ore (SLO) having a higher hematite content and Martite goethite iron ore (MGO) having a higher goethite content were subjected to detailed characterization and beneficiation. The present research was designed to investigate if these abundant, low-grade ores can be enriched adequately using standard industry techniques. No significant enrichment of the ores using jigging operation on the coarse (-3,200 +595 mm) size fraction could be achieved. Good liberation was only attained in the 150 to 300 mm particle size range in both cases. Desliming enriches the ground ores significantly. The effect of the feed size on the separation efficiencies of the ground ores were studied using flowing-film concentration on a Wilfley table. Better enrichment is obtained in the case of 150-mm sized feed by tabling. The grade of SLO is improved from 56.14% to 66.51% Fe, while the Fe content of MGO is enriched from 55.16% to 65.83%. Substantial rejection of alumina and silica is also achieved. Due to the friable nature of MGO and the higher goethite content in it, the loss of Fe in the form of ultrafines is greater in this case compared to that of SLO.

The issue of dust control in underground coal mines has been extensively studied by both government and industry. This research work has resulted in many techniques which control the dust or help miners avoid it. Control techniques either prevent the dust from becoming airborne or cleanse the air before it can be inhaled. Avoidance measures minimize the exposure of miners to the airborne dust by blowing the dust away from work areas or making it unnecessary for a miner to occupy a dusty region. One of several successful dust control measures in continuous miner sections is the use of a machine mounted scrubber which cleanses the air and helps to prevent the contaminated air from reaching areas frequented by mine personnel. Research on the application of scrubbers on longwall shearers began in the 1970s and continued into the 1980s. The most successful projects showed only moderate improvement when a scrubber system was mounted on a longwall shearer, and the less successful projects actually increased worker dust levels. There are many reasons that scrubbers have not been successfully applied on longwalls. The most significant of these is that longwalls have across the face ventilation and generally have high face air flows. Scrubbers tend to work best when they are the primary cause of ventilation. Therefore, their capture efficiencies on longwalls tend to suffer because of the exposure of the drums to the primary airflow. Other reasons scrubbers have not been implemented on longwall s include the successful application of an excellent water spray system, effective cutting techniques, and dispersion of dust sources. These techniques can help control drum generated dust, increase production, and limit the relative effectiveness of a scrubber.

Serpentinite minerals are available in large quantities from asbestos mining activity. The granular or fibrous serpentite, at temperatures greater than 700°C, will recrystalize into olivine, forsterite and enstatite. These minerals have been used and studied for decades and are environmentally safe. The thermal process changes the composition and properties of the original mineral. Therefore, the substitution of the original mineral cannot simply be made and the applications for these new synthetic minerals need to be redeveloped. The two original mineral forms allow a wide range of new synthetic raw materials which can be adjusted to specific applications or custom needs.

OUTSTANDING FACTORS that have largely induced the current great interest in the reopening of old mines and the search for new deposits are the increased relative value of gold, the certainty of a market for it, and the decreased activity and poor profits in other lines of endeavor. It is easy to understand why a miner out of a job and unable to find any other means of livelihood would naturally take to the hills with his pan, pick, and shovel; but never before have inexperienced, would-be prospectors and placer miners materialized from the factories and farms, the haberdasheries, and the oil and gasoline supply stations, in such numbers as the last couple of years have witnessed, except when rich strikes of the proportions of a Klondike have been made. What, may one ask, has occasioned this condition? Unemployment has put these men in a receptive frame of mind, and newspaper and magazine articles have done the rest-- The Gold Miner of Los Angeles (a new weekly), The Mid- Week Pictorial (New York) for Sept. 3, 1932, and Popular Science Monthly for August, 1932, for instance. Even the Saturday Evening Post had an article on a promising part of Colorado. Stories that good wages may be had for the panning in nearly every western state have been featured by daily papers, popular "scientific" magazines, and quasi- technical journals. These tales have been eagerly grasped by thousands of people whose ignorance of mining has only served to increase their enthusiasm.

This study shows the characterization of tailings from the mining district of Coscotitlán, State of Hidalgo, Mexico. Chemical analysis by Spectroscopy of atomic absorption (AAS) allowed to quantify the concentration of Fe, Mn, Zn, and Pb as the most abundant elements in the mineral sample; in addition to the presence of Sn, Te, Bi, Ni, Co, and Cd. The presence of precious metals as the Ag (64 g ton−1) and Au (0.65 g ton−1) were identified. The greater distribution of Ag was detected in particles with diameter of 74 lm. Species as pyrite (FeS2), galena (PbS) and hematite (Fe2O3) were observed in a matrix of quartz (SiO2) by Polarized Optical Microscopy (POM), these species were also identified by X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Both the elemental and mineralogical composition of tailings was corroborated by the technique Scanning Electron Microscopy - Energy Dispersive Microanalysis (SEM-EDS).

"Far from equilibrium synthesis allows development of novel crystal structures and microstructures, leading to achievement of enhanced physical and mechanical properties. A number of ""far from equilibrium"" techniques are reviewed with emphasis on the amount of departure from equilibrium. The ability of two such techniques, mechanical alloying (MAl, and physical vapor deposition (PVD) to develop novel structures are discussed in detail. For the MA process emphasis is placed on intermetallic compound compositions. Solubility extension, beyond rapid solidification (RS) levels, is found in terminal compositions but not for the intermetallics. Nanostructure-sized grains (< 100nm) form which can be retained after ""low temperature"" compaction. On continued milling in many cases the nanometer-sized grains transform to an amorphous structure. Ordering is destroyed by MA, except in those intermetallics with large negative enthalpies of formation. For the PVD process, a review of application to terminal light alloy compositions is presented. This includes a new high-temperature aluminum alloy, layered materials with nanometer spacing, corrosion-resistant magnesium alloys and low-density titanium compositions. IntroductionTo enhance the mechanical property combinations of advanced structural materials innovations in process/synthesis are required [1-6]. In this paper the capability of various ""far from equilibrium"" synthesis techniques [7,8] to produce novel constitutional and microstructural effects, and hence potentially enhanced physical and mechanical properties, in advanced materials is presented. The application of two such methods, mechanical alloying (MA) and physical vapor deposition (PVD) is discussed in detail. For the MA process emphasis is on intermetallic compositions with consideration given to solid solubility extension, microstructural refinement, amorphization, and formation of intermetallic compounds. The goal of this project is to develop, demonstrate, and document the beneficial use applications of a ponded F-fly ash as a road subbase material for the 2.1-mile Meredosia Industry Access Truck Route in Meredosia, Illinois. Approximately 60,000 to 70,000 cubic yards of ponded fly ash are proposed for use on this project without negative environmental impacts to surface water or groundwater. The County Highway Truck Route will consist of a 24-foot wide road built on a 0 to 7-foot thick compacted F-fly ash subbase. Laboratory testing indicates this fly ash will serve adequately as a road subbase, conforming to IDOT standard specifications. The economic considerations of using the Meredosia F-fly ash will also be developed so that a detailed cost-benefit analysis can be prepared for this project and for future projects. This project represents a two-year cooperative development and demonstration effort among the Office of Coal Development and Marketing (OCDM) of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs (IDCCA), Southern Illinois University (SIU), Morgan County Highway Department (MCHD), Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), AmerenCIPS, and the Morgan County Regional Planning Commission. It is anticipated that monitoring activities will continue for a period of three (3) years after the completion of this project. The MCHD and IDOT will oversee all construction activities and long-term performance evaluation studies. Successful demonstration of large-volume beneficial use applications of F-fly ash at this site will significantly reduce management costs for power plants burning Illinois Coal. Furthermore, it will encourage similar utilization strategies at other sites in the State of Illinois.

The methods discussed include: complete oxidation with arsenic fixation; selective volatilization of arsenic; acid baking, soda ash roasting, and others methods. Methods for the ultimate disposal, or marketing, of the arsenic are discussed.

For the impurities in the copper smelting waste acid, SO3, Cu, As, Pb, Zn, Re and other elements enter the waste acid and generate a lot of arsenic residue, gypsum and neutralized residue, in which Cu, Zn and Re metals have not been recycled. Cu, Re and As are separated by step-wise vulcanization. The valuable metals of Cu, Zn and Re are recovered by separating zinc through pH adjustment. Calcium injection is conducted for boiler for reducing the amount of SO3. The residues generated in the form of arsenate and hydroxide will be returned together with arsenic filter cake for smelting treatment so as to achieve the purpose of valuable metal recycling and solid waste reduction and harmless treatment.

So far, most social performance monitoring systems have not gone beyond listing the impacts on various stakeholders. Executives have had to rely on intuition to devise interventions that would improve the impacts. This paper describes a survey process, known as the Stakeholder 360 (S360), which eliminates much of the guesswork. The paper reviews key studies showing that raising the levels of communication, trust, and common vision among stakeholders leads to the acquisition of the resources needed to improve the socio-economic situation. Therefore, the Stakeholder 360 measures the levels of these three factors in the relationships between a company and its stakeholders, and among the stakeholders themselves. In a validation study at a gold mine in rural Papua New Guinea, the S360 produced a socio-political ?roadmap? that showed management and stakeholders alike which relationships need more communication, trust, or common goals/vision. Management used the findings to create alliances that helped the government move forward on a regulatory regime for the mine closure. The community used the findings to focus its planning for life after the closure. An S360 survey conducted six months later revealed a decline in dependence on the mine and an overall increase in levels of mutual understanding.

Final landform planning in Deswik software was used to determine if integration into the mine plans could achieve better closure outcomes. Geologically simple deposits can be modeled quickly and easily with inexpensive gridding and mapping software. Hundreds of mines around the world use RockWorks99 and Surfer 7 for generating contour maps, producing log plots and cross sections, and performing other useful geological calculations. These programs are used by many mining operations as their only modeling and graphical software or they are used in conjunction with larger systems. The investment in learning time is low and the programs produce reasonable quality results with standard computing equipment. RockWorks99 and Surfer 7 provide a good level of capability while maintaining high quality technical integrity. Both programs are used for many applications in mining, oil and gas, environmental and other fields that require analysis of spatial data.

The Construction of the Northeast Extension of the Baltimore Metro involved soft ground, compressed air tunneling. During the tunneling, gasoline and dry cleaning fluid contamination were encountered. Innovative approaches and solutions were developed to address these problems. Special emphasis was on the problem of compressed air pushing gasoline vapors into surrounding communities, resulting in an extremely dangerous situation and a public relations nightmare. Guidelines and standards were established for working in this contaminated environment. Also, through a proactive approach by all parties, all claims and disputes have been resolved.

This paper is the first putt of a report giving the results of the Bureau of Mines&apos; twenty-third semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will give a more detailed discussion of the whole survey. Results of the determination of copper-strip corrosion, color, sulphur content, copper-dish evaporation residue, and gum content as given by the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method will be presented in the second paper, which will also include the prevailing retail price and the tax at the time the sample was taken. This paper deals specifically with data relative to gravity, Reid vapor pressure,&apos; and distillation (method 100.13).6 The samples tested were divided into "competitive-price gasolines" and "premium-price motor fuels," a method of presentation that was begun with the twenty-second semiannual survey. A total of 312 samples were collected from service station pumps in 20 cities throughout the United States. Of this number of samples, 207 were "com-petitive-price gasolines" and 106 were "premium-price motor fuels." All of the samples were collected in March, 1931, and analyzed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla. "Competitive-price gasoline" includes those fuels that are sold at the generally recognized local base price and all fuels that are sold below that price. All fuels that are sold at an advance over the generally recognized base price are placed in the class of "premium-price motor fuels." These fuels include Ethyl gasolines, benzol blends, "high-test" fuels, and those fuels that owe their "anti-knock" rating to the process of manufacture rather than to the addition of other material such as Ethyl fluid or benzol. The term "high-test" is generally applied to motor fuels that are more volatile than the regular competitive-price gasolines. "High-test" fuels may also have a high anti-knock rating.
