To monitor the quantity and quality of air in underground mines to assure safe working conditions. Approach Several mine air monitoring systems, consisting of sensing stations in the return airways and control stations on the surface, have been Installed and tested. How It Works Sensor stations are located at strategic places in the underground mine. At each station, the sensors measure air velocity, air temperature, methane concentration, and carbon monoxide concentration. In one system, differential air pressure between intake air and return air, is also measured. Output voltages of the sensors are converted to digital signals at the sensor stat ion; these signals are multiplexed so that data from all sensors can be trans-phone wire to a central station. There the data are displayed and alarms are triggered when the sensed values exceed (or in the case of air velocity, fall below) a preset value. In addition to receiving data automatically, the central station can poll individual sensors at any time.

D.C. United, the professional soccer team located in Washington, D.C., completed a 20,000 seat capacity stadium in July 2018 named Audi Field. The project initially considered a foundation system consisting of roughly 800 prestressed concrete driven piles configured in groups with pile caps. A value engineering alternative proposed in a design-build manner ultimately resulted in the use of 300 single element Auger Cast Piles (ACPs) for the foundation system. The ACPs ranged between 1.5 ft and 4 ft in diameter, were up to 85 ft in length, and were connected through a system of grade beams to accommodate large lateral induced loads. Limitations in conventional analytical methods were encountered during the structural design of the piles due to the complexity of the lateral loading and pile fixity conditions. An innovative approach using advanced finite element modeling that incorporated the framing effects of the grade beams was required to meet the strict movement criteria despite large lateral loads.

This investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines to compare the selectivities of diverse flotation reagents and also of flotation and float-sink methods of separation. Flotation tests, using sodium chloride, an alcohol-type frothing agent, and a kerosine-pine oil mixture as reagents, were made on seven coking-coal samples representing four different beds. The results indicated equivalent selectivities relative to sulfur rejection when entrapment effects were minimized by recleaning the various products. Selectivities relative to ash rejection were also equivalent for some coals; for others, the selectivities of the reagents tended to increase in the order sodium chloride, alcohol-type frother, and kerosine-pine oil. Float-sink tests on these same coals generally gave results indicating better selectivities than those obtained in flotation tests at comparable levels of recovery.

Mineral resources in the Silver Creek study area of the Nez Perce National Forest. Idaho, were investigated during the summer Of 1989. The study area includes the 36,100-acre Silver Creek-Pilot Knob RARE II area (No. 1-849) on the north side of the South Fork Clearwater River, about 11 miles west of Elk City, 10. Mines in and near the study area in the Tenmile and Newsome mining districts produced about 100.000 02 of gold, mostly from placers. Gold production had an historic value estimated at 52 million, equivalent to nearly $40 million at today's prices. Lode mines produced about 19,000 oz of gold, along with smaller amounts of silver, copper, lead, and zinc. Of 34 mines and prospects examined, ten lode properties are considered to be significant by virtue of their past development or production and the presence of possibly ore-grade mineralization. There are no identified mineral resources in the study area; however, samples that contained gold and anomalous arsenic delineate a three-mile-long area from the Sentinel mine, north to the Blue Quartz prospect where exploration might disclose resources. One mining company is conducting geophysical studies and drilling within the delineated area. In addition, six placer sites may contain enough gold to be of possible interest for future exploration and development.

Electric arc furnace dusts, especially those containing zinc ferrite, are notoriously difficult to process to give valuable products and non-toxic residues. The ideal process would remove and recover the toxic non-ferrous metals as pure metals, of commercial value, and non-toxic residue which can be used as a raw material in the steel industry. From an examination of the thermodynamics of the oxides and chlorides of the various elements in the dust, it is apparent that the chlorides of the toxic non-ferrous elements are more stable than the oxides while the reverse applies to the ferrous elements. This offers the opportunity for a complete separation of the zinc, lead and cadmium from the iron oxide. Results are presented for the chlorination of electric arc furnace dusts under oxidising conditions and the subsequent treatment of the chlorides to recover the pure metals and chlorine which can be recycled back to the reactor.

This paper focuses on remediation of a 3.6 km long water conveyance tunnel that suffered two large falls of ground (FoGs), one of which subsequently progressed to the ground surface, resulting in full collapse of the tunnel. The tunnel is part of a network of water conveyance tunnels and open channels that direct water into two turbines located in an underground powerhouse, originally constructed in the 1970s. At the time of construction, the tunnel was partially supported with shotcrete or rock bolts, with no further ground support added since construction. Two sonar surveys in 019 and 01 identied two adacent large FoGs in the tunnel, approimately 1.2 km from the tunnel outlet. Historical geological and geotechnical information indicated that the FoGs occurred within a 60 m wide fault zone. Remediation plans were developed, which included stabilization of the outlet channel, the portal, the tunnel leading up to the FoG areas (1.2 km length) and the FoG areas. Several remediation options were considered to restore the tunnel, including construction of a diversion tunnel to bypass the FoGs or remediation of the FoG areas with steel ribs and backlling the void above the FoGs to surface.

O procedimento específico mais utilizado é o Blowdown, com o abaixamento de carga até nível de ventaneiras, facilitando posterior limpeza e reparo. Para sucesso deste procedimento, é essencial um planejamento adequado das atividades. Informações técnicas e experiências operacionais permitiram o embasamento teórico e a execução do Blowdown do Alto Forno 03 da ArcelorMittal FCSA (Tubarão). Como preparação, foi efetuado o aumento do fluxo periférico (remoção de cascão) e o aumento da permeabilidade do Cadinho (maior circulação de líquidos, limpeza e drenagem). Realizou-se também a preparação de equipamentos específicos e controle dos parâmetros operacionais. O abaixamento de carga foi devidamente realizado conforme planejado, até o nível de ventaneiras e permitindo paredes internas livres de cascões.

The FMC Westvaco Trona Mine is located near Green River, Wyoming and has an annual production of 4.5M tons. Trona is an evaporite mineral that is processed into several products, mostly soda ash. The underground mine has two active development panels and one longwall (LW) panel. The mining horizon is about 500m below surface and the surrounding strata liberates methane. Three surface-based, blowing fans provide ventilation air as a positive pressure system. The mine operates a 225m long LW face, built by Joy Mining Machinery. Headgate and Tailgate developments are driven with four entries. The recovery room, at the end of each panel, is 8m wide with three access chutes. Additional recovery room support comes for concrete blocks used with a center to center spacing of 1.5m. As the LW enters this pre-driven recovery room there are notable responses and shifting ground stresses. This study was undertaken to measure the ground response using seven vibrating wire displacement transducers. These devices were used to monitor the convergence as the LW approached the recovery room. The methane concentration in the air ventilating the recovery room was also monitored. The correlation between convergence and gas liberation was then studied. The results show that the convergence varies from 0.1m to 0.25m along the length of the recovery room. Ventilating the recovery room becomes critical as methane is liberated from oil shale as the more plastic floor material is disrupted. Appropriate methods are employed to ventilate the recovery room.

This paper aims to build computer vision which able to detect truck’s distance from safe limit allowed during dumping activity. The system will warn the truck’s driver if the truck has crossed that predetermined safe limit.

Tarner (1),3/ Muskat (2), and Schilthuis (1) have presented methods of calculating oil recovery by the expansion of dissolved gas with and without return of gas to the reservoir. Although electronic computers have eliminated the tedious and time-consuming calculations (4) required by each of these methods, many petroleum engineers do not have access to electronic computers. For these engineers a short method is presented that uses the Tarner method as a base. Moreover, for engineers who have access to computers and have not as yet prepared a program, the short Tamer method requires less computer time than the long iterative methods. In the proposed short method, no plotting of the calculated data is required to determine a point of intersection described in the original Tarner presentation, as only one calculation is needed to determine the value sought, or two calculations if greater accuracy is desired.

"A two-dimensional heat transfer model for transient simulation and control of a continuous steel slab caster is described. Slab thermal and solidification conditions are computed by the model as a function of time-varying casting speed, secondary spray cooling water flow rates and temperature, slab thickness, steel chemistry, and pouring and ambient temperatures. A solidification model that includes the effects of steel chemistry, cooling rate and mierosegregation on the solidification path is incorporated directly into the caster model. Comparisons between measured and predicted liquidus and solidus temperatures are given for two low alloy steels, and show good agreement. Predicted and measured slab surface temperatures recorded on an operating caster are compared with this transient model and show that the model can predict the temperature response at the slab surface. Results of several simulations are given to demonstrate the effects of changing casting conditions on the slab thermal profile and the solidification end-point. A control methodology suitable for online control of a continuous casting machine is described, and its ability to control the surface temperature profile by dynamically adjusting secondary spray cooling flow rates is demonstrated using the simulator. IntroductionIn order to remain competitive in today's world-wide market for continuously cast steel products, steel producers are finding that it is ever more important to implement process control and to develop a more thorough technological understanding of their casting process. By integrating process control and monitoring into both production and quality control, producers are better able to meet customers' demands for steel of the required quality, quantity, size, grade, and properties at the lowest cost. Computer models used for real-time/on-line prediction and control of continuous steel casters are fundamental tools to accomplish this. Accurate on-line prediction and control of steel solidification and heat transfer allows for more flexibility in caster operation by giving operators the ability to change casting speeds while keeping critical process parameters within required ranges. Such control 'capability also results in more uniform quality throughout an entire casting sequence from startup to shutdown. Furthermore, due to the unreliability of temperature sensors, and the lack of good sensors for important process parameters such as solidification end-point and liquid pool depth, computer-based control models are often the only available option."

Las nueve vetas a considerar son la del Carmen, Nueva Corona, Corona, Potosí, San Fidel, Potosí Ramal, San Pedro, San Mateo y San José, respectivamente. Finalmente para la geología de los niveles en mención se ha empleado cinta métrica y brújula, basándose en los planos geológicos revisados en el año 1954, de los niveles 80 y 120. El suscrito completó el mapeo de dichos niveles en las labores trabajadas hasta junio de 1956, y ha hecho el reconocimientogeológico de todo el nivel 155. Así también se ha confeccionado tres planos geológicos correspondientes a los tres niveles, además de las tres secciones estructurales."

The Bureau of Mines investigated variations in the activation energy for the carbon monoxide reduction of magnetite and ferrous oxide with respect to the state of aggregation of the oxide material. Reduction phenomena can only be satisfactorily explained by including an adsorption step in the reduction process. Summation of the values of the exothermic heat of chemisorption and the variable apparent activation energy for reduction yields a nearly constant value of about 50 kcal for either ferrous oxide or magnetite regardless of whether they are aggregated in pelletized form or coarsely crystalline particles.

Sands are utilized to make molds for metal castings in the foundry industry. Approximately a half ton of sand is disposed of for each ton of metal cast in this country. In Michigan, annual sand disposal amounts to about one million tons. A process has been developed in this study to reclaim sands from a steel foundry. Physical separations are utilized in conjunction with other operations (such as the removal of binder, metal, spruce, washes, etc.) to yield silica and chromite sands with desirable molding properties. Several different separation methods, including electrostatic, magnetic, and various gravitational approaches have been examined. Experimental results are presented. The applicabilities of these separation methods are discussed.

Current regulations regarding the landfill disposal of asbestos containing wastes are inadequate to ensure there are no ground water or airborne emissions. Accordingly, there is growing recognition that asbestos wastes can only be safely disposed of by using techniques that destroy the hazardous fibres. An innovative high-temperature plasma arc technology (The MAGRAM Process) is being developed for the recovery of magnesium metal from asbestos together with supplementary magnesia containing feedstock. The furnace will operate in. open bath mode with aluminium and/or ferrosilicon being employed as reductant. An important advantage of the process is that magnesium vapour within the furnace will be generated close to atmospheric pressure rather than at reduced pressure under which existing processes operate. Thermodynamic modelling work has been undertaken to define the range of slag composition and furnace temperature under which magnesium production at atmospheric pressure is feasible. The effect of slag chemistry, reductant addition, and temperature on product quality and yield have also been investigated and key aspects have been tested on bench scale. A 300 kW pilot plasma furnace unit has been employed for the treatment of calcined asbestos wastes. Aspects of design and operation of the unit are detailed. THE TERM "physical metallurgy' is used in the title of this lecture in preference to "metallography ?because the former has a broader meaning with most audiences, some people thinking of the latter as being limited to work with the microscope. This distinction, how- ever, has not been held by the out- standing workers in the field of metallography, such as the late Professor Sauveur. In the broadest sense metallography is essentially the same as physical metallurgy. The American Society for Testing Materials has adopted-the following definition: "Metallography is that branch of science which relates to the constitution and structure, and their relation to the properties of metals and alloys." This definition might be improved by adding after "properties" -"and their industrial and scientific uses." Metallography has also been defined as the science of metals and alloys. Physical metallurgy is to be distinguished from process metallurgy in that the latter relates particularly to the production of metals from the ores.

The objectives of the investigation herein reported were to determine: (I) the S-curves for certain selected cast steels, (2) whether or not the published S-curves for wrought steels are satisfactory for use on cast steels of similar composition, and (3) to prepare hardenability curves of the selected cast steels. In order to make the final comparisons between cast and wrought steel more completely tangible, it was deemed advisable not only to determine S-curves for the steels submitted in the cast condition but also to roll some of the cast-steel test bars and determine comparison S-curves on such wrought material. This procedure eliminates the composition variable and makes it possible to reveal the differences resulting from plastic deformation of the cast structure in addition to providing the comparison with published data on wrought steels. Cast Steels The cast steels selected for the preparation of S-curves, or time-temperature transformation curves, were similar to S.A.E. series 1030, 2330, 4130 and 4330. Of these the 1030 was supplied by The Crucible Steel Casting Co., Cleveland, Ohio, and the other three by The Sawbrook Steel Castings Co., Lockland, Ohio. The steels were furnished in the as-cast condition. The manufacturers supplied the chemical analyses and the properties that could be obtained in the heat-treated condition—all of which is summarized in Table I. The refractory performance of Peirce-Smith converters is considered to be mainly determined by effects of process control and refractory installation design. BHP Copper has shown that, over the last four years, considerable improvements in tuyere line life can be affected .by maintaining a uniform temperature in the operating converter and by ensuring sufficient and specific placement of expansion allowance in the construction of the refractory brickwork. A combination of optimized crane availability, rapid matte transfer, converter operating practices, new refractory installation techniques and applications has minimized out-of stack time. In addition, larger diameter tuyere pipes and hard piping have increased blowing rates and lowered cycle times, which has resulted in a tuyere line performance in excess of 62,500 tonnes of blister copper before maintenance is required. This paper discusses the refractory installation design changes that were made to increase tuyere line life.
