THE ultimate purpose of the Chemical Manufacturer is to produce consumer products which can be sold to customers. Such production and sales can be continued only if the operations yield a profit to the manufacturer and if the products meet the requirements o the consumer--bath parties to the transaction must be satisfied. There are vast numbers of consumer products, made by chemical pro-cesses. The production of some of these ultimate products may involve the use of several intermediate chemicals, applications of few or many different processes, and the utilization, somewhere in the series of operations, of a variety of raw materials. On the other hand, some ultimate products have a very simple chemical history between raw materials and end products. There are no chemical products in use which are completely independent of the mineral industry. For many, the association is direct and obvious; for others, it may be indirect and even obscure. Analyses of the process and raw-material ancestry of a very large number of consumer products would suggest that many products are derived from Industrial Mineral products directly, that there are many in which the connection is indirect, and that there are only a few products with which industrial minerals are not in some way or other associated. The vast majority of the more important chemical products, and especially the basic chemicals from which other products are made, are directly dependent for their production upon Industrial Minerals or their derivatives. In the preceding part of this paper, for each raw material mentioned some references have been made to the leading chemical products based on this material. This, however, is only part of the story, because in most cases the consumer product can be made from any special raw material mentioned only by the use of other materials or chemicals made from them. The production of consumer chemicals is really possible only through an intricate interlocking of processes, materials, and apparatus.

The effect of various constituents on the pyrolysis and combustion of a pulverized coal in an entrained-flow reactor has been inves¬tigated. Predicted time-temperature histories of the coal' particles and experimental weight loss data indicate a strong coupling of heat and mass transfer to the pyrolysis and combustion rates. A higher combustion rate following ignition was observed as particle size was increased to 112 µm. This is related to a higher particle temperature after ignition for the larger particles. Although the heating rate prior to ignition decreases with increasing particle size, higher slip velocities and surrounding gas temperatures for the larger particles promote early ignition. The presence of liptinite in the coal increases the weight loss rate before and immediately after ignition. Similar behavior was observed for pyrolysis. Fractions of a HVA bituminous coal which were rich in mineral matter or semi-fusinite were found to have a higher heterogeneous char combustion rate than vitrinite rich samples.

LEAD smelting has been an important industry in Utah for many years. The first lead smelting was done, over 60 years ago, at the Rollins mine in Beaver County, by burning heaps consisting of alternate layers of wood and high-grade carbonate ore. The lead thus obtained was. molded into bullets. With the development of. the mines, the problem of cheaper handling of the ore became important. The only outlet for this ore was Swansea or the Atlantic Coast but to ship to either cost $150 per ton or more for treatment and handling. From 1864 to 1871, experimenting was done with blast, Scotch hearth, and reverberatory furnaces, with the blast furnace surviving as, the standard plant. The first crude furnaces were circular or hexagonal in shape, and were made of adobe and stone, which quickly burned out. They were small, about 2 1/2 ft. in diameter, and smelted from 3 to 10 tons. in 24 hr. The metal had to be tapped from the bottom of the crucible, necessitating a shut down of the furnace during this process. This pro¬cedure caused salamanders to form around the tap hole when the furnace was started again, which frequently resulted in freezing. The campaign lasted until a tap of bullion was made. The first successful plant of the crude stone type was operated in 1870. From 1870 to 1872, there was a smelter building craze in the state. During that period, about 20 furnaces were built, chiefly near the mines, and their operation was limited and sporadic. The work was then placed in the hands of trained metallurgists, who standardized on the rectangular form of furnace. In 1871, Daggett, at the Winnamuck mine in Bingham, installed water-jackets around the smelting zone of the furnaces. These furnaces were circular; the diameter at the tuyere line was 3 ft. 6 in. and at the charge floor 5 ft. 3 in. Conventional methods to characterize the fatigue behavior of metallic materials are very time and cost consuming. That is why the new short-time procedure PHYBALCHT was developed at the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Kaiserslautern. This innovative method requires only a planar material surface to perform cyclic force-controlled hardness indentation tests. To characterize the cyclic elastic-plastic behavior of the test material the change of the force-indentation-depth-hysteresis is plotted versus the number of indentation cycles. In accordance to the plastic strain amplitude the indentation-depth width of the hysteresis loop is measured at half minimum force and is called plastic indentation-depth amplitude. Its change as a function of the number of cycles of indentation can be described by power-laws. One of these power-laws contains the hardening-exponentCHT eII, which correlates very well with the amount of cyclic hardening in conventional constant amplitude fatigue tests. To identify heat-treatment-parameters and SAE 52100 TRIP-alloys with high hardening rates as well as their damage tolerance the PHYBALCHT- and PHYBALLIT-method were used. One modified SAE 52100 TRIP-alloy was investigated in detail. The fatigue behavior and the cyclic hardening of the selected SAE 52100 TRIP-alloy was investigated and compared with conventional SAE 52100. Conventional stress-controlled fatigue tests were performed on a servo-hydraulic test system with a frequency of 5 Hz and a load ratio of R = -1. Different rates of cyclic hardening were identified. The size of the nonmetallic inclusions leading to crack initiation and the number of cycles to failure were used to evaluate differences in the damage tolerance capability.

Self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers are conquering the world for reason that they are able to solve any severe fouling problem in indirect heat transfer due to the circulation of cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube exchangers. In most cases, these particles consist of chopped metal wire. Moreover, self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers perform with excellent heat transfer at very low liquid velocities, which makes completely new designs of shell and tube configurations possible. Further, self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers show a strong shear thinning effect in non-Newtonian liquids. All the above characteristics make the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchanger an ideal tool for the indirect heating of laterite nickel slurry in High-Pressure-Acid-Leach (HPAL) plants. Preliminary tests and evaluations of these heat exchangers have shown that the performance and price of these heat exchangers used for the production of nickel and cobalt from a laterite slurry, cannot be matched by existing conventional heat exchange systems. This article explains the principle, design, lay-out and enormous advantages of the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchange technology in a plant suitable for an annual production of approx. 45,000 ton nickel and 4,500 ton cobalt from laterite slurry through high pressure'acid leaching.

"The Oxford Hydroelectric Station was a unique project that incorporated a variety of dam strengthening methods to stabilize the facility in order to meet the standards required by Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The dam stability and Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) remediation work consisted of (1) construction of a new emergency spillway; (2) installation of 75 high capacity rock anchors; (3) construction of an anchored concrete powerhouse buttress; (4) construction of cast-in-place and sheetpile flood walls; and (5) design and construction of a permanent soil nail wall. INTRODUCTIONThe Oxford Hydroelectric Station is one of 11 hydroelectric facilities owned and operated by Duke Power along the Catawba/Wateree River. The Catawba River originates in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains just west of Morganton, North Carolina. The river flows east out of the mountains and, at a point just below the Oxford Dam, the Catawba River turns and heads southeast. The Catawba River continues to flow southeast past Charlotte and into South Carolina where it eventually becomes the Wateree River. The Wateree River eventually flows in to the Atlantic Ocean.Located a few miles east of Hickory, North Carolina, the Oxford Dam and Hydroelectric facility is in the upper reach of the Catawba River. Oxford Dam creates the third impoundment along the river known as Lake Hickory. Lake Hickory is well known locally for providing many outdoor activities such as boating, jet skiing, canoeing and fishing. The dam and powerhouse were put into operation in the spring of 1928.Key features of the dam include a short embankment section on the south end of the structure, a 391-foot (119m) long south bulkhead and powerhouse, 540-foot (165m) long gated spillway section and a 235-foot (71.6m) long north bulkhead. The maximum height of the dam is approximately 100-feet (30m) from the crest to the dam/rock interface. (See Figure 1).The work associated with this project is the result of licensing requirements of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) which mandates that all hydroelectric facilities have the capacity to safely discharge runoff created by a critical rainfall event defined as the probable maximum flood (PMF). Duke Power, a division of Duke Energy (DUKE) submitted an initial PMF report in 1992 which indicated that at the Oxford Dam would be overtopped by approximately 10-feet of water during the modeled PMF event. Given the duration and depth of the overtopping, significant damage to the facility and a possible breach could result. Therefore, modifications to the existing facility were necessary to satisfy the report of the PMF model."

The validity and accuracy of velocity measurements underground have been questioned repeatedly by those in mine ventilation work. The general disagreement on the subject is well illustrated in an AIME publication.' Although the presence of errors is readily admitted, their magnitudes are not known and often are described by practical operators merely as "great," "small," or "of no importance." The belief that errors are of academic interest only prevails because of a justifiable claim that actual volumes of air circulated are well in excess of those required by law and safe mining practices. Poor understanding of the source and nature of errors inherent in velocity measurements, coupled with questionable determination of cross-sectional area, result in faulty techniques for the purpose of expediting ventilation surveys and render doubtful the calculated volume. Often consistency of readings is confused with accuracy. A succession of check readings showing a maximum deviation of 5 pct in the measured value of velocity usually signifies nothing more than diligent application of technique in a stable ventilating current.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 27,930 acres of the 52,000 acre East Fork High Rock Canyon Wilderness Study Area, CA-020-914/NV-020-006A, in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area is located in Humboldt and Washoe Counties, NV, about 45 miles east of Cedarville, CA. Bureau of Mines personnel reviewed pertinent literature and county mining records and examined prospects or mineralized areas. There are no organized mining districts and no historical or active claims in the study area; one small pit lies in the southwest corner of the study area. Based on published literature, sample results and field observations, there are no recognized mineral, geothermal, or fossil fuel resources. Epithermal mineralization indicators are not present or exposed. Sand and gravel deposits in the study area are not likely to be developed as other deposits are closer to market areas.

NITROGEN is becoming recognized as one of the important elements in ferrous physical metallurgy. Several investigations indicate that nitrogen plays a significant part in such phenomena as strain aging and temper brittleness. Nitrogen is known to be a powerful austenite stabilizer and may be a useful alloying element in stainless steels. The hard-enability of steels has been found to be increased by nitrogen. The nitriding and carbonitriding pro- cesses are examples of successful industrial application of nitrogen in ferrous materials. For a complete understanding of the various roles played by nitrogen in ferrous metallurgy a knowledge of the phase relations in the binary iron-nitrogen system is essential. The literature contains a variety of iron-nitrogen phase diagrams. Those suggested by Fry, Sawyer,² Epstein and his coworkers,³,4 Lehrer,5 Eisenhut and Kaupp, and Hägg7,8 differ significantly from one another. Moreover, the most recent of these investigations dates back about twenty years. A re-determination of the entire diagram, therefore, appeared desirable. In addition to the published phase diagrams, investigations have been carried out on portions of the iron-nitrogen system. Bramley and Haywood determined the composition and temperature of the iron-iron nitride eutectoid. The maximum solubility of nitrogen in a iron was investigated by Portevin and Seferian10 and by Diikstra. 11 Several investigators have determined the crystal structure of the various iron-nitrogen phases. In fact, Eisenhut and Kaupp6 and Hägg7 based their entire phase diagrams on the results of such studies. Epstein' and Emmett12 reported lattice-parameter measurements on the E (hexagonal close-packed) phase. Osawa and Iwaisumi13 also studied the change in lattice parameters of the a, ? and E phases with nitrogen content. Brill" and Hägg7 showed that the y' phase has an ordered structure, and Hendricks and Kostingsl5 suggested a structural relation between the E and phases. In a recent investigation Jackl6 arefully studied the super-lattice reflections from the y' and phases. Experimental Procedure A large variety of experimental methods has been used by previous investigators in studying the iron-nitrogen system. These methods include thermal analysis, microscopic examination, X ray diffraction, magnetic measurements, dilatometric analysis and anelastic experiments. Thermal analysis is of low accuracy in determining changes in the solid state. This accuracy is further decreased for iron-nitrogen alloys since composition changes will occur during heating or cooling unless extreme care is taken to use a proper atmosphere. Metallographic methods are of small value . because homogeneous iron-nitrogen alloys of sufficient size can be produced only with great difficulty. The dilatometric method is open to the same objections as thermal analysis in that changes in composition may occur during heating and cooling. Lattice parameter measurements by X ray diffraction can be used satisfactorily for determining phase boundaries if cooling is fast enough to prevent structural changes. In view of the limitations of the various other techniques two methods only were adopted in this investigation, (1) X ray diffraction measurements, and (2) a controlled nitrogenizing method. The second method is an innovation for investigating the iron-nitrogen system, and will be described at length. "Aluminium A206 (AlCu4) is one of the strongest aluminium casting alloys with tensile properties approaching those of ferritic ductile iron. If the specification on the silicon content (< 0.05%) is easy to achieve during alloy ingot production, it is not the case in a foundry, where returns are used which are not perfectly cleaned from the silicate containing molding sand (Olivine). In alloy A206, the Si content is controlled in order to avoid the formation of a low melting point intermetallic phase (such as phase Q Al5Cu2Si6Mg2); these phases will melt during the solutionizing heat treatment to which alloy A206 must be subjected to develop its outstanding mechanical properties. This incipient melting may deteriorate the mechanical properties of Alloy A206 if the solutionizing treatment is applied at the standard temperature of 530°C.In the present study, a lower temperature solutionizing (520°C) was applied to a high Si content 206 alloy in order to reduce or eliminate the possible incipient melting. This was carried out on a complex shape industrial casting weighing 14 kg (31 lb) and 560x410x250 mm (22x16x10”) in size poured in aluminum 206 with a high silicon content (0.22% vs 0.05% max for alloy A206). Twenty ASTM E8 subsize tensile specimens were excised from two locations in the casting in order to compare the tensile properties for the two solutionizing temperature used (530 and 520°C). Optical and SEM microscopy allowed to investigate the causes of the differences in the properties observed between the 2 zones of the casting studied for 3 different heat treatments. INTRODUCTIONIn spite of their “textbook” outstanding mechanical properties (Up to twice the strength and elongation of the widely used A356 alloy), aluminum-copper alloys of the 2xx series are seldom used because of their propensity for hot tearing [Li, 2011], the segregation of copper [Cho, 2003], and their sensitivity to stress corrosion cracking [Jean, 2009, p. 113)]. Also, because of their wide freezing range and high thermal conductivity, a wide mushy zone makes feeding difficult, unless strong temperature gradients are created by liberal use of chills and risers in the critical zones of the part. Because they are prone to hot tearing, grain refining of Al-Cu alloys is particularly important, titanium playing a major role in the process [Sigworth, 2003]; grain refining has also been shown to be beneficial to fatigue strength [Jean, 2009, p. 103]. The practical basis of foundry practices pertaining to these alloys is outlined in an AFS webinar [Weiss, 2014]."

"Antiscalants were evaluated for control of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in gold processing applications. Under severely supersaturated conditions, 100 percent inhibition was achieved with 30 ppm antiscalant. Laboratory and field testing established that an antiscalant could both inhibit scale buildup and remove an estimated 0.5 kg/m2 per annum of pre-existing scale. A program was developed to control CaCO3 at a gold mill experiencing severe scale buildup. Annual accumulation of as much as 3 cm of scale in process piping was reduced to unmeasureable levels when 10 ppm antiscalant was applied. No scale-related upsets in mill operation occurred during a five-month trial period.INTRODUCTION Inorganic mineral scale is a crystalline deposit that forms when dissolved mineral constituents exceed the solubility of the respective mineral phase. Formation of mineral scale adversely affects a wide range of industries and is of particular interest in mining and metals processing. Scale affects numerous stages of metal extraction processes. Restricted flow in piping, nozzles, valves, screens, pumps and other components used to transport mineral slurries, metal concentrates, and tailings as well as scale in millwater and thickener overflow circuits are primary concerns (Alfano & Boffardi, 1994). Heap leaching, comminuation, flotation, vat leaching, carbon adsorption, and heat exchangers as well as oxidation steps used in processing sulfidic ores are among key unit operations that may be adversely affected (Simmons & Gathje, 2003). Antiscalant chemicals are designed to prevent formation and growth of mineral scales such as CaCO3. These chemicals, which include two primary classes – phosphonates and anionic carboxylate polymers and copolymers - are added to the gold processing stream at low parts-per-million (ppm) concentrations to interfere with nucleation and growth of scale forming crystals and to disperse fine particulate material. Application points may be located throughout the gold extraction process. Evaluation of the performance of antiscalants plays a critical role in determining the best product for a specific application. Performance evaluations include laboratory testing, pilot scale studies, in-plant trials, and ongoing performance monitoring during mill operation."

Water contact angles of talc powders were determined from the values of the heats of immersion measured using a flow microcalorimeter. The results were used to calculate the contact angles using a rigorous thermodynamic relation. In the present work, the calculation was carried out using the temperature coefficient of the contact angles determined experimentally using another method. The results obtained in the present work on several different talc samples are compared with those obtained using other methods.

THE ceramic industry has to do with forming or molding articles of clay, and imparting to them their characteristic properties of permanence, strength and color by subjecting them to heat treatment in kilns. This heat treatment is commonly known as "firing" or "burning." The art of firing clay ware antedates the industrial use of coal; hence wood was the fuel first used, and the earliest kilns were built to burn wood. The majority of the clay ware produced today is fired in periodic kilns that are essentially enlarged structures similar to the earliest enclosed kilns; a kiln consists of a large chamber 16 to 32 ft. dia. (or rectangular) in which the ware is charged and fired either in direct contact with flame or hot gases from the fuel, or in saggers which shield the ware from direct contact with the gases. The fuel is burned in a number of small furnaces built in the thick .wall that encloses the chamber; these furnaces are from 16 to 36 in. wide and from 3 to 5 ft. long; some of them have horizontal or sloping grates, but many have no, grates; the last are called "dead-bottom" furnaces. The temperature necessary to mature the charge in the kiln varies for different clays; for some it is as low as 1800°, and for others as high as 2700° F. Wood was an ideal fuel for the low temperatures that were used in early kilns; it burns freely and produces along, clean flame, which promotes uniform distribution of the heat in the kiln; it does not coke and so restrict the passage of air through the fuel bed; the ash does not melt in the fuel bed to form clinker; and the ash that is carried into the chamber and deposited on the charge does not contain iron and sulfur to discolor the clay. The extent of the ceramic industry now precludes the general use of wood in kilns, so that today this industry is one of the large users -of bituminous coal, burning more than eight million tons annually in kilns. Manufacturing plants usually are at or near the source of clay, with deposits of coal suitable for kilns occurring near the clay. The cost of coal is the largest single item of expense in the manufacture of clay ware, and, because all coals are not equally suitable for the process, the careful selection of coal is important. "With the development of industrial production, more and more wastewater containing high concentration ammonia nitrogen was discharge into the environmemt, which caused serious harm to the environmemt. Treating the wastewater has great significance to protect water resources. Using air-stripping combined with oxidation to uptake high concentration of ammonia nitrogen wastewater. The influence of operating parameters was investigated. Experimental results revealed that pH of solution, aeration time and aeration strength showed heavy influence on ammonia nitrogen removal. Air-stripping combined with oxidation can be considered as an alternative approach for the removal of high concentration of ammonia nitrogen from practical metallurgical wastewater. When pH was 11, aeration time 20 min, aeration strength 1040 Lh-1, and oxidation with 10 % NaClO solution 10 min, the initial ammonia nitrogen 2130 mgr1 could reduce to 12 mgr1. IntroductionThe rapid development of human activities has caused a worldwide increase of nitrogen in rivers, lakes and coastal waters. It leads to considerable eutrophication and an increase in the frequency of toxic algae blooms [1,2]. The concentrations of nitrogen in the water of China are pervading high [3]. The discharge of wastewater containing high concentration of ammonia nitrogen is one of the most important factors. Great efforts have been devoted to the removal of ammonia nitrogen from wastewater. Traditional methods include biological denitrication [ 4 ], chemical precipitation with magnesium ammonium phosphate [5], electrochemical conversion [6], air-stripping [7] and so on. Biological denitrication is the most common process in the treatment of ammonia nitrogen wastewater. But the process is only suitable for the removal of relatively low ammonia concentration due to the requirement of appropriate C/N ratio [8]. Chemical precipitation needs additional reagents, which may introduce new pollutants to water body. Electrochemical method often uses expensive metal or metal oxide as electrodes, and also consumes large quantity of energy [6].Although air-stripping makes use of stripping tower and consumes energy, it is very suitable for the removal of relatively high ammonia concentration. Different air-stripping conditions would appear different removal efficiency. And only air-stripping the effluent can not be attained the ""Integrated wastewater discharge standard (GB8978-88)"". In this study, we use air-stripping and oxidation to removal high concentration of ammonia nitrogen from simulated and real ammonia nitrogen wastewater."

Vanadium is one of the materials being considered for use in fast-breeder nuclear reactors. It is a good heat conductor and nearly transparent to radiation, properties regarded as ideal for nuclear fuel containers. The problem has been the metal lacks ductility needed for forming. In our program at Reno Laboratory the effects of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (previous affiliation) the effects of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon have been reported21,22 nd most recently the effects of boron and boron with carbon.23 The continuing study by the Ames Laboratory of the effects of hydrogen, the most subtle and fugitive element in its relationship to structure and properties, is commendable. The solubility of oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen in vanadium (and other bcc metals as well) is related to material purity. With the available limit on metal purity and the interaction (clustering) of hydrogen with the other interstitial and substitutional elements present in their base metal, would the authors comment on the tolerance of hydrogen in relation to oxy- gen that will avoid intergranular fracture and above what content or how seriously harmful in oxygen at various carbon levels? Understanding the true effects of hydrogen (and other interstitial impurities) in vanadium depends on knowledge of the amount present under various conditions and its distribution between various possible positions. Significant amounts of hydrogen may be in "thermo-dynamic" solution, but not as individual atoms in interstitial positions. It may be in grain boundaries, in subgrain boundaries, in vacancies, or in dislocations. Some of the hydrogen may be paired or in complexes with impurities in substitutional solid solution in vanadium. This makes the analysis of the effect of hydrogen vastly more difficult. It should not be expected that hydrogen in grain boundaries will affect slip in the same manner as hydrogen in interstitial positions, nor will the complexes react to heat treatment the same way as hydrogen in dislocations. It is gratifying that the authors have quoted results from two of our inestiations,&apos; but neglected one2&apos; which applied the Petch theory to electrorefined vanadium of high purity and analyzed the effects of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon on the ai and ky values obtained by the extrapolation and grain size methods. Details can be found in the paper. Briefly, we obtained a ui value of 10,300 psi (t = 5150 psi) at 273°K. The metal also exhibited profuse twinning with high ductility at 123" and 77°K. Nitrogen was more effective than oxygen in increasing ui, the increase being about twice as much for the same impurity level. Carbon additions resulted in only minimal changes in Ui. The corresponding ky increased as oxygen and nitrogen increased, with nitrogen being more effective. Carbon additions resulted in little change. Although the difference in yield strength of vanadium was explained on the basis of the Cottrell-Bilby model of the tearing away of dislocations from the impurity atoms,

PT Freeport Indonesia is completing the first underground gyratory crusher excavation at their Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine located in the mountains of Jayawijaya, District of West Papua, Indonesia. DMLZ is an underground block cave mine with an expected output of 80 000?t/d and a scheduled production start in 2015.In order to deliver crushed ore to the mill through the existing conveyor belt, the DMLZ block cave mine will construct two 1000?kW 1.6?×?2.3?m gyratory crushers with their own respective ore flow conveying systems underground. Each crusher is composed of top, middle, and bottom chambers with an ore bin. This system includes a series of high capacity conveyors approximately 5 km in length including transfer stations and support facilities.The development methodology required a combination of lateral development by jumbo drilling machines and vertical development by mechanised raise climbers (MRC) due to the complexity of the chamber design.This paper will discuss the project scope, design and development methodology, ground conditions, innovative survey controls, and the challenges faced due to the remote location.CITATION:Hernandez, E, Kusumohastuti, W and Agustian, I, 2014.
