Calculations of the temperatures of metal, coke, and gas at any level in the cupola furn~ce can be carried out by means of heat balances, using data obtained from experiments with an 18 in. experimental cupola. The results can, to a certain extent, be verified by means of heat transfer calculations.The curves thus obtained, showing the variation of temperature with height in the cupola, provide a valuable picture of the heat transfer processes in a shaft 'furnace.INTRODUCTIONThe Brown Coal Research Laboratory, of the University of Melbourne, has been engaged in recent years on a programme of iron-melting tests in an experimental cupola furnace.Although the ultimate aim of this work is to develop brown coal char as a cupola fuel, most of the experimental work so far has been with conventional coke. The testing programme was designed to provide information on the effect of variables such as blast rate, metal-coke ratio, and coke size on the overall melting process, e.g. melting rate, temperature of metal tapped, and stack gas composition.However, in many cases data were obtained on conditions inside the furnace by measuring temperatures and gas compositions. The aim of the work described in this paper was to qevelop a method for using this data to obtain information on the processes taking place in the cupola.Very little research has been done on the combustion of fuels in shaft furnaces. Early work on this subject, as well as the initial stages of the Brown Coal Research Laboratory's programme, has been discussed by Evans (1959). There is more than a century of experience in multiple seam mining in Germany. In several mines up to 20 seams had been excavated within the last decades. Due to the nature of the deposit and the history of technical development the older panels cause a complex stress distribution for the lower seams and the current longwalls in descending order of mining. The depth of the longwalls reaches up to 4000 ft. This causes a maximum vertical stress that reaches between 30 and appr. 60 MPa. To handle these conditions several support systems are applied for roadway heading. A central knowledge management system for ground control is used for design and dimensioning of support within the DSK. This paper gives an overview to the nature of German multiple seam mining and the solutions in matters of panel layout and support design. It describes the full lifecycle for roadways in the seam starting with the geological and geotechnical evaluation, the basics of roadway deformation in great depth, the development of planning tools and standards for German coal mines, the range of alternative of support systems and roadheading techniques, as well as the reinforcement measures and the processing of support at the T-junction of the face entry. This paper uses exemplary descriptions that are consolidated in a specialized reference book ?Gebirgsbeherrschung von Flözstrecken? ? ?Ground Control in Roadways? which summarizes the standards of ground control based on the development of the past 25 years in German coal mines.

"Hecla's Greens Creek silver-gold-lead-zinc mill began using carbon dioxide rather than sulphuric acid to control pH in April, 2015. High pH levels in the grinding and lead flotation circuits are caused by the presence of re-mined cemented paste backfill in mill feed and need to be lowered to achieve good flotation response. Carbon dioxide has proven to be quite effective at controlling pH in the lead circuit with greatly improved pH target attainment. The allowable amount of carbon dioxide used is not limited by effects on lead-zinc selectivity and by poor froth characteristics, as was the case with sulphuric acid. Startup and implementation went smoothly, with few operational issues needing to be resolved. Early results from implementation of the system and its effects on mill performance will be presented. INTRODUCTION Hecla Greens Creek is a silver-gold-lead-zinc mine producing flotation lead and zinc concentrates, as well as a gravity gold concentrate. Besides their base metal contents, both the lead and zinc concentrates carry precious metals. The circuit is largely conventional, with SAG and ball mill grinding being followed by graphite removal preflotation, then conventional lead flotation and conventional zinc flotation. Both rougher concentrates are treated in regrind steps, followed by cleaner flotation. The cleaners tails are treated in an unorthodox bulk circuit to produce a low-grade zinc-lead concentrate marketed to Imperial Process smelters (1). BACKGROUND Backfill and Flotation pH The Greens Creek mine is an underground operation in which mined areas, after ore extraction, are backfilled, using rammed paste or pumped slurry. The backfill consists of mill tailings to which approximately five percent Portland or similar cement is added to enhance its compressive strength. Later mining near backfilled areas inevitably results in a considerable amount of old backfill being mixed with new ore before being shipped to the mill. Depending on orebody geometry, mining methods etc., the amount of backfill in mill feed is often 20% to 25% and sometimes even higher. Commercial cement, and consequently backfill prepared using it, contains excess lime. Because of this, backfill in mill feed is indistinguishable from the addition of a large amount of lime, so mill natural pHs often range above 10 or even 11. Similar situations have been recognized for many years at mines throughout the world (2)."

The reduction of manganese oxide from a basic slag by silicon dissolved in liquid iron at steelmaking temperatures was studied to determine the rate-controlling step for the process. The experiments were carried out under an argon atmosphere in a resistance-heated vertical-tube furnace. The two liquid phases, slag and metal, were held in zirconia crucibles. Sampling and chemical analysis of the slag phase led to time-concentration curves for the system. Results obtained by varying parameters such as temperature, stirring rate, concentration, and melt geometry defined the limiting reaction mechanism. The reduction of manganese oxide by silicon is a fast reaction and reached equilibrium within 90 min. The rate of stirring has a marked effect on the reaction rate, while, on the other hand, the effect of temperature is very small. This identifies the rate-controlling step as diffusion rather than interfaciul chemical reaction. The variation of other parameters revealed that a) diffusion of manganese in the iron phase is the slow step, b) the value of D/6 for manganese in iron at 1550°C is 7x 10-4 cm per sec, c) the energy of activation for the apparent rate constant is 7 kcal per mole, and d) increasing the amount of silicon in the iron decreases the diffusion coefficient of manganese. THE equilibrium relations pertinent to the reduction of manganese oxide from a steelmaking slag by silicon dissolved in liquid iron have been studied, but little is known about the mechanisms that control the rate of the process. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the rate of reduction by silicon and to determine the rate-limiting step. The effects of stirring rate, temperature, composition, and melt geometry were investigated as a means of identifying the controlling step. On the laboratory scale, relatively little work has been done in the area of slag-metal kinetics, primarily because of the problems confronted in attempting to contain liquid slags and metals in laboratory crucibles at steelmaking temperatures. Since graphite is an ideal material for a crucible, several investigations have been carried out on the reduction of various oxides from a slag by carbon in graphite-saturated iron and on the transfer of sulfur between a slag and graphite-saturated iron. Most of this work has been performed in induction furnaces. Studies where the container was not graphite are extremely limited. A single kinetic study of manganese transfer between molten iron and basic slags was carried out by Sano, Shiomi, and Matsushita.' These investigators prepared calcium oxide and titanium oxide crucibles to contain the two-phase system. Only a few experiments were carried out and the results had to be treated qualitatively. Despite the paucity of kinetic data, a large quantity of information is available in the literature concerning the thermodynamics2-12 and physical properties'3-21 of the slags containing manganese oxide and the dilute liquid iron alloys containing manganese and silicon which were involved in this research program. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD A vertical-tube resistance-heated furnace was used in this investigation to study the slag-metal reaction Although most previous slag-metal studies were carried out in induction furnaces, a resistance furnace has several advantages including better control of temperature and stirring rate. Hence, a resistance furnace was selected for this study, and its design is shown schematically in Fig. 1. "Slurry «viscosity» has been recognised for several decades as a variable that significantly influences the operation of grinding mills. This paper describes an instrument that can be used in a laboratory or a plant to measure and monitor the flow properties of mineral slurries. Laboratory results obtained for two different ore samples are consistent with results obtained during a full scale trial. The results provide a basis for analysing the effect of the solids concentration and particle size distribution on the slurry flow properties. Grinding tests were also conducted in an attempt to link the grinding efficiency to the rheological properties of mineral slurries.INTRODUCTIONThe flow properties, or incorrectly called «viscosity», of a slurry influence the operation of mineral processing devices. Work has been conducted for instance to assess the effect of this variable on the operation of hydrocyclones (Kawatra et al. 1996; Klimpel, 1982a) and dense media separators for coal (Napier-Munn, 1996). However, most of the research effort has been oriented toward the grinding processes which is still the most energy demanding operation for ore dressing (Fuerstenau et al., 1995).Results of investigations of the influence of slurry flow properties upon grinding performances are presented regularly in the literature since 1950. In the 70's, most of the research work was conducted with the aim of using slurry flow properties for the control of grinding mill and to analyze the effect of that variable upon the population balance model breakage and rate functions (Austin et al., 1984; Hemmings et Boyes, 1977). In the 80's, most of the litterature dealing with slurry rheology was devoted to the use of viscosity modifiers to adjust the slurry flow properties, allowing an increase of grinding mill throughputs (Klimpel, 1982b; Fuerstenau et al., 1985). Although laboratory and pilot plant results show the benefits of adding these modifiers to the slurry, few plants have published results concerning the advantages of such addition (Fuerstenau et al., 1985). It is felt that the use of these modifiers introduce operating difficulties with the concentration circuits, especially flotation (Kawatra et Eisele, 1988)."

Data about shipments in this county are more plentiful than in most others. Canal records, although not complete, are available for 1837-1840, 1856-1857, 1859 and 1864. The census figures, and those of the reports of the Secretary of Internal Affairs, are very evidently too .low. Local consumption within the county has always been large, mainly due to the Cambria Iron Company, and other manufacturing plants, in Johnstown; here a large coke supply was made from coal directly from the mines, neither coal or coke being handled by any outside transportation agency. All available data is shown in Table 35.

The dynamites are graded according to the percentage of nitroglycerin that they contain. Thus a “40% powder” would be one in which the sticks, weighing one-half pound each, would include one-fifth of a pound of pure nitroglycerin. Dynamite is usually packed in paper cartridges weighing about one-half pound each which will vary in diameter. When ordering, it is customary to specify a size of cartridge that will as nearly as possible fill the drill hole, the commonest size being 1 ¼” in diameter by 8” in length. It is nearly always shipped in 50-lb. boxes, which have a volumetric capacity of 3/4 cu.ft.

The accelerated growth of urbanization processes and current environmental concerns brought to light the existing enormous quantity of construction and demolition waste (C&DW). Considering the frequent lack of adequate landfill areas available for the disposal of these materials, their use in the manufacture of ceramic products has been attracting a growing interest from researchers and is becoming common practice, with the consequent relief in public administration concerns for the C&DW appropriate management. This work describes the study of clay-based products added with C&DW collected directly from the construction industry. Samples containing up to 50 wt.% C&DW were uniaxially pressed and sintered in air in an electric furnace (950-1150 °C, 1 hour). Sintered test pieces were characterized by X-ray diffraction, apparent density, open porosity and flexural strength. The results showed that up to 50 wt.% C&DW can be added to the clay material, with no degradation in the final product properties.

There are no data available of shipments until 1858, and then estimated, when railroad service became available. By reason of the iron made in the county, and the large amounts of salt, the tonnage used locally was quite large, and until 1860 these are estimated from the probable salt and iron production. After 1859 the tonnages shipped by rail are partly estimated from the total shipments of the Allegheny Valley Railroad from four counties. It is believed that the totals are below, rather than above, what the actual production was. While considerably larger for the same years than figures given by the Secretary of Internal Affairs and census reports, these data were always too low in those days, partly because of lack of facilities for gathering them, but more largely because of the strong prejudice existing in those days against furnishing such data to any governmental agencies.

Manufacturers and consumers of steel have come to realize during the past few years that cleanliness is of great importance in steels which must meet rigid specifications for various physical properties. Of equal importance is the consistent production of steel which is uniform in these properties. For maximum utility, steels should be uniform not only from heat to heat, but also from ingot to ingot and within each ingot. In the manufacture of killed steels such as the higher carbon forging grades, uniformity as indicated by the usual chemical analysis is easy to obtain, provided that a normal top discard is taken, as is always the case in steels poured with hot-top practice. No such uniformity, however, holds true for the nonmetallic matter, which consists for the most part of the products of deoxidation of the steel. For a large tonnage of steels which go into articles manufactured by deep-drawing processes, killed steel has never been successfully applied because with the present deoxidation practice, low-carbon killed steel is almost invariably extremely dirty. To obtain the desired qualities for deep drawing, the steel is rimmed, - that is to say, deoxidized with manganese and perhaps a small amount of aluminum, - the resultant product being of high purity in the skin of the ingot, but very badly segregated at the center of the ingot, particularly in the upper-central section. This segregation necessitates a very heavy top discard, and one of the major segregates is carbon which renders the steel too hard to draw properly. If clean, low-carbon killed steel could be made successfully, much better ingot yields would be obtained than by the present rimming steel practice. Furthermore, banded structures and outside and inside seams, which are undoubtedly due in a large measure to blowholes in the ingot, are defects which are very difficult to control in rimmed steel.

Australia’s mineral valuation code continues to evolve, while mineral valuation standards are also being written for Canada and Southern Africa. The author is leading a task force for writing the extractive industries addition to the International Valuation Standards. Meanwhile, the International Accounting Standards Board is continuing the development of an extractive industries addition to its International Financial Reporting Standards, with an emphasis on valuation reporting. This paper analyzes the need, content and ownership for a U.S. minerals appraisal standard in the context of both these developing international standards and also existing U.S. regulations and appraisal standards. The author provides many questions for research and debate.

Very few data are available about production in this county. The amount mined was used locally, or shipped by river, until 1839 when the canal was completed to Dunnsburg. Only partial records for four years remain of canal shipments. Considerable coal was used locally by the iron works at Farrandsville for some years. Rail shipments started in 1861 and those shown are the estimated shipments of these mines as compared with the mines in other counties served by the Philadelphia and Erie Railroad, the total tonnages being given in the annual reports to the Auditor General. It is not likely that any coal used by the railroad is included in these figures. (Table 40.)

A case history of design, prediction, probe pile driving, and construction of a pile foundation for Building 3 of Waterside at Bay Beach Condominiums located in Fort Myers Beach, southwest Florida, is presented. Site geometry constraints, the presence of a 12.0 ft (3.6 m) deep lake occupying the southern one-third portion of the proposed building footprint, and marginal subsoils provided specific challenges for design and construction of the foundation. The subsoil conditions were explored by performing Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings and a Piezocone Penetration Test (PCPT) Sounding to depths of 100 ft (30.5 m) within the building footprint. Additionally, borings were performed to envelope the building. Deep foundation alternatives included driven concrete, monotube, and steel pipe pile as well as drilled shaft. Following an evaluation of high structural loads, site-specific constraints, foundation test data from buildings 1 and 2, and preference expressed by the project owner, a pre-cast prestressed concrete (PPC) pile-supported foundation system was selected as an economical and effective foundation approach. Use of an augered cast-in-place (ACIP) pile foundation system was precluded by the project structural engineer. This paper deals with the design aspects and methodologies utilized in choosing and economizing the foundation system. The building foundation was designed for an allowable pile capacity of 40 tons (353 kN) in compression, 1.5 tons (12 kN) in lateral capacity for a deflection of 0.25-in (0.64 cm) and 15 tons (133 kN) in uplift capacity. For the single story extended garage structure, a pile capacity of 27 tons (238 kN) was indicated in compression. As part of the design process, an extensive probe pile driving program was carried out in order to evaluate the pile driving equipment, determine and verify pile capacities, and optimize the production pile lengths. A total of 33, 14-in (356 mm) square, PPC concrete piles were driven within the entire building limits, and dynamically load tested utilizing Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) as part of the probe pile driving program. Utilization of PDA during probe pile driving helped in predicting pile set-up (i.e., increase in pile resistance with time) as well as reducing the pile lengths by as much as 20 percent. It resulted in variable pile lengths during the production phase. This information was effectively utilized as part of the overall quality control program to install a total of 559 PPC piles (including 33 probe piles) within the Building 3 footprint, including the reclaimed lake area, to depths ranging from 45 to 58 ft (14 to 18 m) below existing ground elevation as part of the foundation support system. Prior to installation of probe or production piles, a termination criterion was established using 1-dimensional wave equation analyses in addition to the design pile embedment requirement. The predicted pile capacities compared reasonably well with the capacities from the CAPWAP analyses for probe piles. This engineered, monitored and tested foundation solution provided a cost effective and satisfactory basis for completion and approval of the foundation work for the building resulted in cost savings over other foundation alternatives for the owner. The building has since been occupied and a recent reconnaissance has indicated that the building foundations are performing satisfactorily.

"ICP-MS has moved from a laboratory curiosity to a functional analytical tool. This paper discusses how ICP-MS has been used to solve difficult analytical problems encountered when analyzing various mine materials. Comparisons between analytical techniques applied to the analysis of gold and the platinum group metals illustrate the advantages and problems of ICPMS when. applied to trace levels of some metals iri the presence of ore grade metals. Interferences and matrix effects are compared to ICP, AA and Neutron Activation. The necessity to select chemical extractions which are compatible with ICP-MS are also discussed.The ICP-MS techniques explained in the examples on Au and precious group elements (PGE) have validity in analytical problems encountered in testing of trace metals in the presence of major elements found in mine materials. Exploration and environmental testing are other areas that require the same analytical approach to quantify trace levels in the presence of major interfering elements normally associated with mining environments."

Precrusher stockpiles are designed principally as buffers to decouple the mining and processing operations. They are usually paddock dumped or dumped over a face to form fingers by dumping haul truckloads and reclaimed by front-end loader in an ad hoc manner. In addition, they are often not built and reclaimed to completion but continually added to and extracted from. While this design suits the mining process and is operationally simple, there can be little confidence in the grade of the ore that is fed to the crusher. This makes short-term grade control difficult and reconciliation back to the mine face imprecise. Well-designed and operated precrusher stockpiles can overcome these deficiencies.The different types of grade variability in mining are reviewed in this paper. The role of precrusher stockpiles in reducing short-term variability is discussed and their ineffectiveness in addressing long-term variability is highlighted. Their role in removing the serial correlation of the extracted ore is explained.Precrusher stockpiles carry out the four, at times competing, objectives of storing, buffering, blending and grade separation. Their actual design and operation result from a compromise between these four competing roles. These roles are explained in detail along with the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of precrusher stockpiles. The recommended blended-in blended-out stockpile (BIBO) design is discussed in detail. Matched pairs of BIBO stockpiles of limited tonnage built and reclaimed to completion retain the best knowledge of grade and facilitate the reconciliation process.Simulation studies have been carried out on BIBO stockpiles to understand the blending opportunities of the different options for building and reclaiming, and to identify the methods that achieve maximum blending. It was found that laying down rows in one direction and reclaiming across these rows gives the best blending. Matching the width of the reclaim face with the daily crushing requirements is also important. The length of the rows, and building in either one or two layers has little effect on the extent of blending.Appropriate design can provide a reasonable compromise between the four objectives.CITATION:Jupp, K, Howard, T J and Everett, J E, 2013. In producing feed for a lead blast furnace, concentrates analyzing 70 to 80 pct Pb are sintered to produce a physically acceptable low-sulfur product which contains only about 50 pct Pb. Mixtures of PbS with varying amounts of SiO2, CaO, Fe 20., and ZnS were heated in an oxidizing atmosphere at 1,000° C; the products were cooled and examined to determine the problems involved in producing sinter with substantially higher lead levels. Microscopic and electron microprobe studies of the above products as well as experimental and commercial sinters indicate that sinters consist essentially of lead silicates, lead-zinc silicate, calcium zinc silicate, and spinel (ferrite). Lead oxide and lead sulfate areas appear to result from insufficient mixing of the materials prior to sintering. The data give an insight into the process and show that sintering results from a complex interaction of all constituents and that sintering is not simply a matter of diluting the mixture to control the oxidation of lead sulfide.

IN two papers published in 1949, alloys of chromium with the refractory metals tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, and columbium were investigated in view of their possible use as high temperature resisting materials. For the Cr-Ta system, a partial phase diagram was presented and the only intermediate phase was identified at Ta2Cr3. A phase of the same composition was also observed in the Cb-Cr system. The X-ray diffraction data presented in these papers, however, were insufficient for crystal structure determination. It is shown in the present study that the only intermediate phase in both the Ta-Cr and the Cb-Cr systems corresponds to the ideal stoichiometric ratio TaCr2, or CbCr2. Both structures are cubic, MgCu, type. At high temperature, however, TaCr2 has a hexagonal MgZn, type structure, which can be retained at room temperature by fast cooling. The alloys were prepared by melting in a helium arc furnace on a water-cooled plate. The design of the furnace was essentially the same as that described in ref. 3. Some alloys were also obtained by sintering compacts made of the mixed powders pressed at 80,000 psi. The sintering was carried on for 4 hr at 1375°C. The tantalum and columbium powders were supplied by Fansteel Metallurgical Corp., North Chicago, 111. The tantalum powder was the reagent grade, with a particle size smaller than 400 mesh and a total impurity content less than 0.1 pct. The columbium powder was smaller than 325 mesh and contained approximately 0.1 pct C and traces of Fe, Ti, and Zr. The electrolytic chromium powder from Charles Hardy, Inc., New York, was smaller than 300 mesh and contained about 0.1 pct Na, 0.05 pct Ca, and traces of Cu, Al, Mg, Si, and Co. Powder diffraction patterns were obtained with a 14.32 cm camera, using copper Ka radiation filtered through nickel foil. The powder pattern of the TaCr2 alloy obtained by sintering at 1375'C was different from that obtained on the same alloy rapidly cooled from the melt. Contrary to this result, the powder pattern of CbCr2 was the same, whether the alloy was made by sintering at 1375°C or by melting, and was similar to that of the TaCr, sintered. It was also found that the structure of the TaCr2 specimen obtained by melting was retained after heating for 4 hr at 1590°C, but transformed into the structure found in the sintered specimen after heating for 4 hr at 1375°C. Hence, the structural change of TaCr2, appears to be a reversible polymorphic transformation. CbCr2 and ToCr2 Structure, Low Temperature Form By using large scale Hull-Davey charts, the powder pattern of CbCr, and of the low temperature form of TaCr2 were readily interpreted on the basis of a face-centered cubic lattice with a parameter of approximately 6.95 kX. The indices of the reflections together with the values of sin' 0 are given in Tables I and 11. From this list of observed reflections, it appears that the (200), (600), (024), (046), and (028) reflections are missing. The lack of (h00) reflections for h 4n indicates a four-fold screw axis. The missing (Okl) spectra for k + 1 An indicate the existence of a diamond glide d. The combination of these symmetry elements can be found in the O— Fd3m space group, which is therefore the most probable one. After having determined the approximate density of TaCr, by the immersion method, the number of molecules per unit cell was calculated and found to be nearly eight. This information, added to the fact that the most probable space group is O leads to the consideration of a structure of the MgCu2 type, in which the atoms have the following positions: 8 magnesium in a and 16 copper in d. On the basis of this structure, intensities were computed by means of the usual formula: 1 cos'20 I a sin2 cos where F is the structure factor; 8, the Bragg angle: and p, the multiplicity factor. The U.S. Bureau of Mines used the East Fork Pine Creek watershed to conduct a pilot study for an inactive and abandoned mine lands inventory, during which techniques and methodologies would be developed for subsequent inventories. A total of 177 waste dump samples, 191 mill tailings samples, and 36 stream sediment samples were collected. Water samples were collected from 18 sample sites during five sampling events. Waste dump, tailings, and stream sediment samples were analyzed for antimony, arsenic, cadmium, copper, iron, lead, mercury, and zinc. Results indicate a multidisciplinary approach is necessary: disciplines should include geology, geostatistis, geochemistry, geophysics, biology, hydrology, and remote sensing; small prospects do not generally contribute to watershed contamination, major mine and mill sites may contribute metal enriched sediment of metal enriched water; speciation studies and bioavailability studies are important.

Crystals of native gold occur in placer-type deposits. Gold, as a pure metal, is the most malleable metal known; therefore, delicate gold crystal forms should not survive mechanical transport and concentration processes involved in placer formation. To test the hypothesis that the crystalline gold is currently forming in place, two active gold-placer operations and an unmineralized background area in Alaska were examined. At these sites, rock outcrops, soil profiles, and native vegetation were sampled. At one sampling site, the soil was panned and yielded crystalline gold, as well as the more common rounded nuggets. The plants and soils were analyzed for their major, minor, and trace-element contents, especially gold. Two procedures, one a simple demineralized water leach and the other a partial digestion with acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide, were also used to extract gold and various anions from soils. The water-extractable gold ranged from <0.02 to 15.0 ppb Au in the extracting solution. This represents as much as a 104 enrichment in gold over average river water. This extractable gold is probably available to the native vegetation. Gold concentrations in the unashed dry plants from the two placer sites ranged between 0.4 and 106 ppb compared to a background range of <1 to <4 ppb Au. The presence of dissolved organic matter in the soils is thought to be responsible for the dissolution, transportation, and precipitation of gold in these placer soils, and this process is presently active in these soil profiles.
