An integrated and dynamic water balance and water quality model for a proposed base metal mine has been created using the GoldSimÖ software package. The model was initially developed to address the water quality of the Tailings Management Facility pond and how pond discharge would potentially affect downstream water quality. However, due to changing project objectives, the modelling has expanded over time through an iterative process to encompass the full mine site and all receiving environment water quality. The model results have been used as part of the mine planning/design process but are also intended to be used for the environmental impact assessment and permitting process. The model has been built to allow for changes to input terms to be readily made as additional data becomes available. The model results serve as a prediction of water quality and the potential project impacts to the receiving environment water quality. This paper presents the process by which data from a wide variety of sources was used to construct the model and how the model results were used to guide development of a conceptual water management plan. In addition, the role of the model in establishing proposed discharge criteria will be highlighted. The model has been delivered as a fully functional application with the intent that the end-user can be other than the modeller, the development of this aspect shall also be covered. IN view of the increasing importance of sintering in the beneficiation of iron ores preparatory to their reduction in the blast furnace, the writer believes the time is opportune for an up-to-date, though brief, discussion of the general principles of sintering, as well as a discussion of some of the recent improvements and mechanical developments that have been achieved in this industry, its present trend and future possibilities. Sintering may be defined as the agglomeration of fine mineral particles into a porous mass by incipient fusion caused by heat produced by combustion within the mass itself. Its first successful application, in connection with the treatment of lead sulphide ores, was known as blast roasting. In this process the lead ore was given a preliminary roasting in a reverberatory furnace, then the incandescent mass was placed in a pot with a grate and an updraft was applied. It was soon discovered that much better results were obtained by cooling the ore, moistening it, and placing it upon an incandescent layer of fuel previously placed upon a grate, and then applying the updraft blast of air until the charge was converted into a more or less agglomerated mass. The fuel was sulphur and the process one of desulphurization, which was the principal result desired. The application of downdraft to blast roasting brought about tremendous results; the principal one of which was that an air blast of high pressure could be passed through a layer of ore deposited on a grate, or on a grate covered by a layer of coarse porous material, without disturbing the particles of which the layer is composed. The air current is compelled to filter through the pores of the charge, whereas if the same pressure applied to the top surface of the charge with downdraft were applied to the bottom of the charge with updraft, the charge would be completely blown off the grate. Another result of reversing the draft was that a flame could readily be applied to the top surface of the charge for igniting purposes. Broadly speaking, sintering is an oxidizing or burning process, therefore the volume of air passing through the charge is the all-important factor. The air must pass through with sufficient rapidity to produce the necessary heat, and if sufficiently rapid the combustion will take place

Additional field evaluations of a modified continuous miner using a new spray system and modified scrubbers have been conducted by the authors. In this demonstration, a comprehensive package for dust control on a continuous miner which included previously developed modifications to the scrubber, scrubber intakes and the innovative chassis spray system was demonstrated. Side-by-side comparisons of the modified miner and regular miner indicated that the miner operator with the modified miner was exposed to 62% less respirable dust. Ram car operators with the modified miner had 38% less respirable dust exposure and the return air on the modified miner had 19% less respirable dust. The mining conditions during side-by-side testing were very comparable. These results support the findings of the modified spray system studies conducted earlier at different mines in Illinois on four occasions and the modified scrubber system field evaluation studies.

Borehole televiewers are downhole inspection devices available for high-resolution imaging of a borehole wall following rock coring. Borehole televiewers should be considered by geotechnical engineers and geologists as a supplemental way of investigating rock for deep foundations. The optical televiewer (OTV) produces a digital optical image and the acoustic televiewer (ATV) utilizes reflected acoustic waves to produce images of the borehole walls. These devices can be utilized to examine soft or fractured zones in the rock mass, solution features, open joints or other voids not observable from traditional rock coring techniques. These devices along with computer post-processing can determine the strike and dip of joints, bedding planes, shear surfaces, or other structural features, eliminating the need for expensive oriented cores or manned downhole logging. An acoustic televiewer was utilized in the Fall of 2008 during the investigation phase for the I-70 New Mississippi River Bridge (I-70 MRB) in St. Louis, Missouri. Voids and fractures in the upper portion of the rock were described by prior consultants. Further investigation of these features was necessary to evaluate deep foundation options to support the main towers. Ten borings were drilled from a barge in the river at the two main tower pier locations. An ATV was utilized in each of the ten borings to produce images of the rock mass in the borehole and allow further investigation of the voids. Voids interpreted as solution features were readily identified in the ATV logs in multiple borings and at similar elevations, suggesting connectivity. Measurements of the voids? width, location in the borehole and orientation allowed a more thorough understanding of the potential impact the solution features may have on the planned deep foundations. An extensive grouting program was eliminated based on the ATV results.

The " periodic pincer " herein described fills a need for a device to control the rate of flow of a wet ore pulp through an orifice . Two uses of the periodic pincer to be discussed are on classifiers and on a wet ore feeder . Although the immediate necessity that brought about this device was for better operation of a miniature hydraulic classifier , in connection with an investigation of iron- ore concentration being conducted by the Federal · Bureau of Mines , with the cooperation of the University of Alabama , the device has promise of a wider field of application . In the iron - ore work , the need became so acute for a nonchoking , uniform - delivery classifier spigot that development of a suitable device was imperative .

The Crestmore Limestone Mine of Riverside Cement Company in Riverside, California is situated within 1.6 km of the Santa Ana River. It is an alluvium covered deposit with a massive quartz manzonite intrustion separating the upper and lower limestone beds which dip from 30° to 50°. The highly fractured upper bed contacting the Santa Ana alluvium contains many unique water inflow problems which vary, from multiple high pressure 19 liters per minute inflows up to 3,000 liters per minute to 11,000 liters per minute inflows-contacted by development mining in April 1983. A case history of the successful grouting of these inflows and the continual grouting procedures in advance of present mining with empirical' results are discussed.

"Syncrude Canada operates the largest oil sands crude oil production facility in the world and produces over 13% of Canada’s total oil requirements. To achieve this, Syncrude mines the oil sands in open pits, extracts the raw oil known as bitumen from the sand using water-based processes and upgrades it into sweet light crude oil by fluid coking, hydroprocessing, hydrotreating and reblending. The final product, Syncrude Sweet Blend (SSB), is sent by pipeline to three Edmonton area refineries and then to pipeline terminals which ship the SSB to refineries in Canada and the United States.As parts of the Mildred Lake base mine reached their economic life, they were replaced with new facilities at the Aurora Satellite mine. Aurora is situated on Oilsand Leases 10, 12 and 34, 35 km northeast of the Mildred Lake facility (Fig. 1).In 2000, the first hydrotransport low-energy extraction production train started up at Aurora. A second production train is scheduled for start-up in 2003. Open pit mining at Aurora occurs using two hydraulic shovels, two cable shovels, and trucks ranging from 320-ton to 380-ton payload capacities (Fig. 2).Once the oil sands is excavated, the trucks dump the ore into a crusher designed to break up the big lumps of oil sands and rock at peak rates of 11 000 t/hr. The ore is then transferred by conveyor to a surge pile and then to a mixing box which combines the oil sands with hot water. Following bitumen separation in the primary separation vessel, froth is delivered to Mildred Lake for processing via the intersite pipeline (Fig. 3).The goal of this paper is to illustrate how high precision shovel GPS (HPGPS) is being used at the Aurora mine to aid in mine planning. This can be accomplished by first describing the function of the mine planning department, describing the Aurora orebody, and finally explaining how the HPGPS system functions and how it is employed at Aurora.The short range mine planning department ensures a steady supply of ore is delivered to the plant at the desired grade in a sequenced and economical manner. This is done by creating a mine plan that consists of shovel dig locations that require the shovels to mine in a specified area at a specified elevation."

The recently completed in-pit crushing and conveying project at Phelps Dodge's Morenci Mine is rated among the world's leading materials handling projects. The operation involves the crushing and transport of more than 109 kt/ d (120,000 stpd) of copper ore, using regenerative conveyors capable of providing more than 5.5 MW (7000 hp) of equivalent electrical energy. The Morenci Mine is located 330 km (200 miles) east of Phoenix, AZ. Phelps Dodge Corp. owns an 85% interest in the mine. The remaining 15% is owned by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Corp. Copper has been continuously produced from the Morenci district since the late 1800s. Until 1989, run-of-mine ore was transported from active mining faces to the Morenci and Metcalf concentrators by truck and rail haulage. In that year, a system of in-pit, semi-portable crushing plants and overland conveyors was commissioned. This substantially reduced truck haulage and effectively eliminated rail haulage in the pit. The system used two semi-portable, in-pit crushing stations equipped with 60/89 gyratory crushers. The crushed ore from both plants reported to the first of two overland belt conveyors, arranged in series, for transport from the pit to a coarse ore stockpile. The system was "backed-up" by existing locomotive rail haulage.

Virtual Reality (VR) is a concept in which the human experience of perceiving and interacting with a computer-modeled environment is achieved through the use of sensors and effectors. It is an advanced fonn of computer graphics where the images are generated based upon where the user looks and how the user moves. As personal-computer-based (PC-based) instruction gains acceptance as an innovative approach to providing safety training, VR offers the capability of providing a multisensory, rather than merely a multimedia, mode of presentation. VR has been effectively used by the military for training tank commanders and by hospitals for training surgeons. However, these applications have been limited to small numbers of highly skilled participants. The purpose of this paper is to examine VR's potential for enhancing the hazard awareness of larger numbers of individuals in a broad-based approach to mine safety training, such as new-miner, annual-refresher, and independent-contractor training.

As director of the Division of Metallurgy of the Technical Section of the Air Service, American Expeditionary Forces, from August, 1917, to January, 1919, I devoted much time to the study of the steels best suited to the construction of aircraft. It became apparent at a very early stage of my investigation that the practice of builders varied greatly in regard to the number of different steels to be used, to the kinds of steels, and to their treatment. Some manufacturers employed as many as fifteen steels while the builder of one of the newest motors, favorably passed upon in the United States, assured me that two or, at the most, three kinds of steel was all he needed to produce satisfactory results. In the matter of treatment, the manufacturers were also greatly at variance.. Some treated their steel with considerable refinement, while others paid but scant attention to this feature. Some manufacturers case-hardened many parts, while others used the case-hardening process sparingly, if at all. Nickel-chromium steels were used at some works for case-hardening while at other plants this treatment was applied exclusively to carbon steels. Air-hardening nickel-chromium steel was used extensively by some and not at all by others. Considerable variance existed likewise in regard to the steels used for admission and exhaust valves. The conclusion was obvious, that no two manufacturers of airplane motors held like opinions as to the steels to be used or as to the treatment they should receive. Was it to be inferred from this that the many committees and associations that had been created, in part at least, for the standardization of aircraft steels had failed to make proper recommendations or that the manufacturers had ignored their recommendations? Confining our inquiry to the committees and associations that had dealt with this question in England, France, and the United States, it was found that in Great Britain the British Engineering Standards Committee, now the British Engineering Standards Association, had devoted much time to the problem of satisfactory standards for aircraft steels. MINING literature contains very few descriptions of operations producing as little as 25 to 30 tons of ore per day. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the gradual development of a mining method for such a small-scale operation at the No. 2 mine of Central Patricia Gold Mines, Limited, and in doing so to review several systems of stoping applicable to narrow ve1ns. MAIN ECONOMIC FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED (1) Overhead.-The outstanding feature of most mines operating on a single narrow vein is chat of small daily tonnage. The reason for this low output can be readily understood. The strictly limited ore-reserves present a condition unfavourable for a policy of large initial expenditures, with the result that the capacity of the plant provided must be governed by the? amount of ore in sight at the time when mill construction is planned. This is immediately reflected in the cost per ton, there being relatively few tons over which to distributed the more or less static charges, such as hoisting, heating, supervision, administration, pre-production expenses, and other write-offs. (2) Development.-In mining this type of orebody, the main factor contributing to high costs is unquestionably the small tonnage of ore made available by a given amount of development. Thus, for example, from the data tabulated below it can be seen chat, assuming a 12-in. vein and a drifting cost of $9.00 per foot, the development charge for this item alone would be 71 cents per ton. Add to this the charges for raising, cross-cutting, shaft-sinking, and pumping, besides charges arising from development in waste, and the figure will be very considerably higher than 71 cents.

This Bureau of Mines report reviews and summarizes recent studies of the rates of chlorination of aluminous resources with CO and C12 mixtures with and without COC12. No reaction mechanism could be obtained from the existing results; however, diffusional barriers in the gas and solid layers probably control the chlorination rate in thermogravimetric experiments. Fluidized beds of particles smaller than 0.1 mm appeared to show very little solid layer diffusional barrier. For optimum chlorination the particle size should probably be less than 8 mm, the calcination temperature approximately 700° C, and the chlorination temperature from 650° to 750° C. Relatively rapid chlorination with COC12 in thermogravimetric experiments was attributed partly to the simultaneous supply of reductant and chlorinator by one gas to the sample reaction site. Comparable results for chlorination of fluidized beds with COC12 are not available. Equimolar mixtures of CO and C12 produced the optimum rate of reaction. Addition to the calcine of 10 to 20 wt-pct NaCl accelerated the rate of chlorination, and addition of SiC14 to the gas mixture decreased the rate of chlorination of SiO2 drastically, but at the expense of chlorination of significant fractions of Al2O3. Further research in various areas is suggested.

The mining sector, which is important in terms of raw-material and energy supply, is seen as a sector with high number of fatal accidents compared to other sectors. In this century of heightened occupational health and safety awareness, it is important to review past accident statistics and analyze current deficiencies using the information in inventory. Although there are many studies assessing occupational accidents occurring in the mining sector, there are few studies using the nonparametric linear programming method. There are many input and output parameters related to occupational health and safety. Nonparametric linear programming method has been found to be useful because it provides simultaneous evaluation of these input-output parameters, does not require functional form in the analyses and provides guidance on the improvement needed by the related parameter. However, this method analyzes data using a single period of time and does not take into account any changes in efficiency over time. In the literature, there is no study in which the change of occupational accidents occurring in mining and even other sectors over time is examined and the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) is used. Within the scope of the present study, the aim was to examine the change of occupational accidents occurring in Western Lignite Corp. in Turkey, where underground and surface production methods are applied, between 2005 and 2018. It is the first time MPI is used to examine the change of occupational accidents over time. The DEAP 2.1 computer program written by Coelli [1] was used in the solution of the models [2].

An original application of ANSYS simulated the forming of the temperature field of a massive casting from ductile cast-iron during the application various methods of its cooling using chills. The numerical model managed to optimize more than one method of cooling but, in addition to that, provided serious results for the successive model of structural and chemical heterogeneity, and so it also contributes to influencing the pouring structure. The file containing the acquired results from both models brings new and, simultaneously, remarkable findings of causal relationships between the structural and chemical heterogeneity and the local solidification time in any point of the casting. The determined relations therefore enable the prediction of the face density of the spheroids of graphite in dependence on the local solidification time. The calculated temperature field of 500x500x1000 mm casting of ductile cast-iron with various methods of cooling has successfully been compared with temperatures obtained experimentally. Internal friction characteristics and temperature dependence of the torsion modulus for iodide zirconium containing 2.4 pct Hf were investigated, using a low frequency pendulum technique. The internal friction curve consists of a background which increases as the temperature increases, a maximum at 860°C apparently a background due to the al-lotropic transformation, a maximum due to grain boundary relaxation with an associated heat of activation of 58,000 cal per mol, and an anomaly below 350°C which may be associated with a precipitation perphenomenon, Oxygen in below small amounts reduces the grain boundary maximum substantially. The variation of the torsion modulus at 20°C was found to be 3450 Kg per mm2 for the zirconium used in the present work. IT is well known that small amounts of certain solutes materially affect the ductility of zirconium. Lely and Hamburger,&apos; as early as 1914, found that high purity zirconium exhibited a remarkable ductility, while Fast&apos; has shown that oxygen and nitrogen can cause substantia1 embrittlement. Treco" has recently demonstrated that the ductility decreases sharply with the oxygen content, and that 2 atomic pct O2 embrittles zirconium to such an extent that cold working is impossible. The marked decrease in ductility is difficult to understand in view of the fact that Domagala and McPherson4 report the solid solubility of oxygen in zirconium to be 29 atomic pct at 500 °C. Another metal which behaves much the same as zirconium in this respect is titanium. Pratt et al." investigated the internal friction characteristics of titanium and the effect of oxygen on the internal friction values. It is evident that internal friction measurements are of value for studying grain boundary segregation, as shown by Pratt et al. for oxygen in titanium, by Pearson for oxygen in copper, and by Maringer and Schwope for oxygen in molybdenum. With this in view, the internal friction characteristics of zirconium and the qualitative effect of oxygen on the grain boundary relaxation phenomenon were investigated. Materials and Experimental Procedure The zirconium used in the present work was supplied by the Foote Mineral Co. in the form of wire 0.05 in. diam. The analysis supplied by the manufacturer indicates the amount of hafnium as 2.4 pct, less than 0.01 pct O less than 0.01 pct N,, less than 0.02 pct H,, and less than 0.001 pct C. Additional spectro-graphic analysis indicates the other main impurities as follows: 0.01 pct Fe, 0.05 pct Si, 0.008 pct Cu, <0.005 pct W, <0.001 pct Al, <0.05 pct Mg, <0.001 pct Ni, <0.02 pct Ca, and <0.01 pct Ti. Microscopic examination of the material in the as received condition revealed very fine grains with numerous twins. Specimens were annealed either in situ in the internal friction apparatus or in evacuated silica tubes in an auxiliary furnace. When the specimens were annealed in the auxiliary furnace, they were wrapped in identical zirconium wire to prevent contamination by the container. Metallographic sections were taken in all cases. Magnetite occurs in the reverberatory furnaces, blast furnace and converter (a) as the result of its presence in the materials charged, and (b) as the result of oxidation of the FeS in the charge in the absence of sufficient SiO2 to slag the FeO as it is produced and thus prevent its subsequent further oxidation. Magnetite is reduced by FeS according to FeS+3Fe3O4=10FeO+SO2 and similar reactions. This reaction is markedly affected by temperature and does not proceed to any important extent below about 1200°C. To ensure comparative freedom from magnetite it is therefore necessary to raise the temperature of the furnace to the highest practicable figure and to use plenty of siliceous flux. Since the maximum operating temperature is likely to be limited by the resistance of the refractories to attack by the slag, investigation of the factors affecting this attack should be helpful. It is reasonable to suppose that the formation of magnetite might be minimized by ensuring intimate admixture of matte and slag during conversion so that silica is readily available for combination with ferrous oxide as the latter is formed. The literature gives no clue to the importance of this factor and some experimental work on this aspect might be fruitful

"In Kazakhstan, there is a unique sulphide copper deposit, in the ores containing the natural isotope of osmium-187 (more than 90 %). In the pyrometallurgical processing of concentrates for the target metal, osmium is mainly sublimated, with wet cleaning of metallurgical gases (dust and gas mixture) 40 % of it together with rhenium passes into washing solutions (wash acid). On the basis of this acid, the production of ammonium perrhenate was organized at the enterprise of the RSE ""Zhezkazganredmet"" and for the first time in the world practice - the isotope of osmium-187. However, the degree of its recovery from solutions does not exceed 8 % of the amount supplied with the charge or 25 % of the amount that was received for extraction. But the bulk of it (~ 75 %) remains in the raffinate, discharged to sewage treatment plants (wastewater). The studies presented in this work are aimed at solving the problem of osmium isotope-187 extracting from wastewater, which are a potential source of increasing metal production in Kazakhstan. The aim of this work is the development and scientific justification of osmium deposition regimes from wastewater using such reagents as thiosulfate and sodium sulphide. The influence of various physicochemical factors on the precipitation of the osmium was studied and optimal conditions for its maximum transition to sediment were chosen. An original method for obtaining osmium concentrate in the presence of sodium thiosulfate with the addition of potassium iodide from a new type of wastewater - man-made ammonia solutions has been developed. These solutions were combined mother liquors of solid-phase stripping operations and dissolution of pulp of crude ammonium perrhenate. On the basis of the obtained results, a settling technology for extraction of the osmium from man-made ammonia rhenium-containing solutions was introduced at RSE ""Zhezkazganredmet"". It should be noted that the degree of extraction of osmium, depending on its concentration in solutions entering on the settlement, and taking into account the addition of sulfuric acid, will vary from 60 to 90 %. The recovery of osmium during the test period was 58 %."

The neutralization of S02 from copper smelter gases to produce calcium sulphate (anhydrite) is considered an attractive alternative to sulphuric acid production. To develop the required technology for the process, a three-stages fluidized bed reactor prototype was designed and operated using both high and low grade limestone and gases with 2, 8 and 12 vol -% S02. The results obtained shows that at 800°C and up to 8 vol-% S02 in the gases, the capture of S02 reaches near 99% with limestone conversion to anhydrite of 45 to 48%. A larger pilot plant is presently being built at the Codelco El Teniente-Caletones Smelter to demostrate the technology and to evaluate the economics of the process. Cu2007

"To better understand the mechanical behavior of the compression deformation of backfill under high stresses corresponding to large depths, consolidation compression tests were performed for cemented tailings backfill with a cement-sand ration of 1:10 and 30% water under confined conditions. After applying different loading stress functions from 0.5 MPa to 32 MPa, the final axial deformation of the test specimen of backfill was obtained, and the micromorphology of backfill was studied before and after consolidation by scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, fitting analysis was performed for backfill confined compression deformation data and device model constitutive equations by the minimum square law. The constitutive model was revised according to the analysis results. The research results indicate that, as the load increases, the void ratio e obeys the functional relationship e=alnt + b (where a and b are fitting constants and t is compression time). Under the high-stress conditions of confinement, the constitutive model of backfill consolidation and creep can be used to describe the creep behavior of the backfill. Under high-stress conditions, after the consolidation of the confined backfill, the space between the tailing particles diminishes, the particles becomes more compact, and particle slippage occurs. INTRODUCTION With the depletion of shallow mineral resources, the mining industry has gradually shifted to deep mining (Zhang, Li, An, and Huang, 2010). Furthermore, with the continuous introduction of sustainable development policies regarding development and utilization of mineral resources, the mining industry must protect the limited available land and make full use of mineral resources as much as possible (Sijing, 1994; Zhihua, 2009). Backfill mining technology offers an unparalleled advantage in fully recovering mineral resources, controlling pressures, and improving environmental protection. As a result, this method has been widely used in various countries in the world (Burd, 2002; Benzaazoua, et al., 2008). Of the underground mines in the world, 45% of the large and medium-sized non-ferrous-metal mines and 37% of the gold mines use backfilling (Fuhrman, et al., 2014; Khaldoun, Ouadif, Baba, and Bahi, 2016). In addition, 45% of underground non-ferrous-metal mines and 37% of the gold mines use the filling method (Mchaina, Januszewski, and Hallam, 2001). According to incomplete statistics, more than 80 metal mines operate at a depth of more than 1 km; the depths of several typical deep mines are shown in Figure 1 (Burd, 2002; Fall, et al., 2009)."
