Stabilization of arsenic via the precipitation of large-sized scorodite (FeAsO4·2H2O) particles usually involves the use of expensive autoclave systems operated under high temperature and pressure conditions. Alternatively, DOWA developed a novel scorodite synthesis process (DMSP®) wherein the Fe(II) ions in solution containing As(V) ions were oxidized by O2 gas under atmospheric pressure. In this process, crystalline scorodite particles were formed via the formation of a gel-like precursor containing Fe(II). Based on this concept, in this study, we have demonstrated the synthesis of scorodite particles by the addition of Fe(III)-containing solution to the experimental solution containing Fe(II) and As(V) ions, without the O2 gas oxidation process. Ferric sulfate (Fe2(SO4)3) was used as the source of Fe(III) ions. Results indicate the precipitation of scorodite particles, comparable to that of the O2 gas oxidation method.

High strength low alloy (HSLA) steels with high strength, high toughness, good corrosion resistance and weldability, can be widely used in shipbuilding, automobile, construction, bridging industry, etc. The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties can be influenced by thermomechanical processing. In this study, themomechanical processing is optimized to control the matrix microstructure and nano-scale precipitates in the matrix simultaneously. It is found that the low-temperature toughness and ductility of the steels are significantly the matrix microstructure during enhancing the strength by introducing the nano-scale precipitates. The effects of alloying elements on the microstructure evolution and nano-scale precipitation are also discussed.

ORDINARILY secondary copper, unless electrolytically refined, is reclaimed directly as foundry ingots used in the manufacture of copper-rich alloy castings. This use does not require the elimination of the impurities to the degree required if the recovered metal is to be used for electrical purposes where a high electrical conductivity is of prime importance. However, as a part of the general policy of reusing its own scrap and by-products wherever possible, the Western Electric Co. at its Hawthorne Works is recovering its secondary copper as wire bars which are delivered to its own rod and wire mill and there processed into wire of high electrical conductivity. This departure from the usual recovery scheme has been accomplished through the careful classification and sorting of the material entering the furnace charges and the careful control of the subsequent melting and refining in a reverberatory furnace. Tests conducted over a period of approximately four years have shown that the quality of wire bars produced from selected secondary copper is equal to that of wire bars produced by the electrolytic refineries. The interest which has been exhibited in the process by those who have seen it has prompted the following general description. It is the authors' opinion that the recovery of secondary copper will become more and more an important factor in the copper production industry. The description is largely of the refining furnace and its operation, but it must be remembered that careful classification and sorting of the scrap materials to eliminate impurities are just as important as the furnace operation toward obtaining a satisfactory final product. Classification and sorting do not lend themselves easily to description; they must just be done. It should also be recognized at the outset that constant intelligent supervision is requisite to the success of the process because there are so many ways in which impurities can find their way into the final product.

Though the first patent on a bucket wheel excavator (BWE) was granted in 1881 in the US, this technology was developed in Germany to the high standards of today. However, this development was only possible in parallel with development of shiftable belt conveyors and boom stackers. The combination of these three types of equipment in the open pits of the Federal Republic of Germany has made lignite the cheapest energy source for power generation, despite the low heating value of German lignite on the order of 8500 kJ/kg (3600 Btu/lb) only. Comparing the costs for fuels used in power generating on the basis of their heating value, the relation between lignite, high quality black coal, and imported crude oil is on the order of 1 to 1.5 to 2.5, hence highly in favour of lignite.

Why is there such an increased thrust toward positive multiple use land management and where will it lead? History and purpose of the mining law of 1872. John Marshall discovered gold at Sutter?s mill near Coloma, California, on January 19, 1848, and utter chaos resulted. The great migration of people to the undeveloped western lands had begun. Prior to this discovery, copper, lead, and iron had been the minerals for which the laws were made. With this discovery of gold on the public domain, it became apparent that congressional legislation was necessary. This became even more apparent as each of the numerous mining districts which were springing up in California, and elsewhere in the west adopted local miners' customs to regulate their activities. Although these early miners acted under mining district rules and in some cases state regulations, they were, in reality, appropriating minerals without sanction of federal law.

Stability analyses of fractured and faulted rock masses require delineation of the position, extent, and orientation of geologic discontinuities. The size of the smallest active discontinuity that may potentially be resolved using the spatial distribution of microseismic event locations is Limited by the accuracy and precision of the location methods. At a hard-rock mine in the Coeur D'Alene mining district of northern Idaho, two data sets consisting of calibration blast signals from a known source site and origin time and microseismic event signals were recorded using a stope-wide accelerometer array. These seismic signals are used to quantify various sources of error in event location. Five factors influencing source location errors are examined in this U.S. Bureau of Mines study: (1) biases of the numerical source location techniques, (2) receiver array geometries, (3) uncertainties in receiver positions, (4) errors in picking arrival times, and (5) uncertainties in seismic velocity structure, including the effect of mine openings. In addition, synthetic data (accelerometer positions, travel-time picks and wave velocity) are used to determine the effect of known systematic and random errors on source location calculations. It is shown that the commonly accepted association of minimum travel-time residuals with the best location solution does not necessarily hold true when there is a systematic error in seismic velocity. Recommendations are made for increasing the accuracy and precision of locations of microseismic events detected under similar field conditions.

For the mining industry, the Internal Revenue Code and regulations offer a range of choices in arriving at the allowable depletion. Each case is essentially unique. Two prerequisites can optimize these opportunities: communications between the mining company's tax specialists and its technical staff; and an understanding of IRS definitions. For the latter, a logical starting point is consideration of exploration and development, since they precede production and depletion is unallowable prior to production. Criteria for selecting engineering and accounting options for exploration and development indicate the necessity of interaction between these company functions to achieve the most favorable tax position.

The Bureau of Mines substantially reduced shale degradation in a coal mine by two spray coat applications of a water-base epoxy sealant. More than 12,700 square feet of passageways were treated, and in 18 months only one failure occurred. This failure was due to improper spray application, Material costs averaged 13 cents per square foot, and labor costs were 7 cents per square foot. Labor included moving all materials into the mine, the setup time for each of the areas coated, and application of coatings.

The coal-based power generation industry faces increased pressure from all sectors to improve its environmental performance. This is due to increased awareness of and concerns regarding greenhouse-and acid-gas emissions, toxic metal releases (to both air and water) and water availability. A methodology to assess this industry?s environmental performance is needed. Such a methodology should assess all environmental impacts accurately, recognizing the irspatial and temporal dependence, and taking into account the social acceptability of technologies employed. Here, we develop a methodology to determine the environ-mental impact associated with solid wastes generated by this industry, and apply this to the specific case of ash management. More specifically, the case study compares the environmental footprint of an ash deposit for a number of operational water management scenarios. The methodology considers leachate generation processes from ash impoundments to obtain a time-dependent concentration profile of mobile constituents at the interface between the ash impoundment and the surrounding environment. This leachate prediction modelling is subsequently linked to plume dispersion modelling tools to determine the fate and transport of leached components, predominantly salts, into groundwater. Together, these provide a measure of the extent to which a land mass is affected by leachate migration from the deposit. To determine the exact boundary between regions of acceptable and unacceptable risk to the environment, we use Ecological Risk Assessment concepts. In this way it is possible to obtain a time dependent affected land footprint which could be used as an indicator of the environmental impact of solid waste management practices. This information can be included in a set of environmental criteria which form the basis of an overall environ-mental impact assessment, using tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The value of LCA is that its structure is consistent with accepted models of environmental decision making, where different approaches to valuation in impact assessment assist in prioritizing impacts on the basis of their perceived significance. The proposed ?affected land footprint? metric represents a significant improvement over current LCA impact indicators for solid waste management practices. Potential air emission impacts to federal Class I areas from distant sources are receiving increasing scrutiny by federal land managers (FLMs). This paper provides summary results of the impact analyses conducted for FLMs and PSD permitting of a proposed expansion for a taconite processing facility. Results from air quality increment, acid deposition, mercury deposition, and visibility analyses for Class I areas located 50 to 162 km from the facility showed the project would meet the respective regulatory and guideline values for the specific analyses. During the course of the air quality analyses, potential new requirements from the FLMs’ Air Quality Related Values Workgroup (FLAG) efforts and USEPA’s Regional Haze Program were brought into the PSD discussions. The implications for these future guidelines and regulations as they may affect future expansions at other mineral processing facilities are also discussed.

The Hiawatha mine, a producer of iron ore, is near the City of Iron River, in Iron County, Michigan. This mine, operated by The M. A. Hanna Co., has been chosen by the author as a typical iron mine in this district that is using the cut-and-fill mining system. General Geology The Hiawatha ore body lies along the steeply dipping north limb of a syncline that closes around on the east end to form a bathtub-shaped structure. Throughout this major structure there are very many smaller wrinkles or folds, which vary the direction as well as the thickness of the ore body. The total length of the ore formation with minor interruptions so far developed is about 3600 ft. The ore body throughout the entire present depth of 2000 ft. has averaged approximately 40 ft. in thickness; it is somewhat narrower at the upper levels and shows a marked increase in thickness on the bottom levels. This increase in thickness probably indicates that the bottom of the trough is near or that a major monoclinal fold has been encountered, which flattens the ore and gives apparent horizontal thickening. The footwall of this ore body is generally a black, graphitic slate, very rich in iron sulphides, quite combustible when exposed to air, and very treacherous to handle during mining operations. The hanging wall, in most places, is a cherty, fairly hard iron formation, and in general stands quite well ill open stopes. There are places, however, where black slate is found in both the hanging wall and the footwall, which makes mining difficult, as the black slate tends to slough off after being exposed to air. In these places it becomes necessary to leave a scale of ore 5 to 6 ft. thick on both hanging wall and footwall, which is not recovered. Fig. I shows a typical vertical cross section through the Hiawatha ore body. Type of Stoping Because of the size and shape of the ore body and the hard, dense structure of the ore, sublevel stoping has been an efficient and economical method of extracting the ore. This method, with various minor changes, has been used since the mine was opened in 1893. There have never been any stope-filling operations, however, until recent years, when crushing of pillars and black-slate fires forced the issue and methods were arrived at to fill all stopes. Development of Deeper Levels Shaft sinking to deeper levels in development operations has been done successfully by two methods without interference or hindrance to production. These systems are: I. Sinking an auxiliary winze a short distance from the shaft, then drifting back to the shaft location and putting up a pilot raise through to the bottom of the shaft. This raise is always in the manway compartment of the shaft, so that no work is ever done under a cage or skip. A 20-ft.

In order to hoist the ore according to grades, stope samples are taken. Three equidistant grooves are picked across the breast at right angles to the dip of the ore, the part removed being caught in the hand and then put into a small bag. When there is broken ore in the breast, the lines are continued down the pile and a small amount taken at intervals of the length of the sampler's pick handle. The quantity of sample from each breast will be between 2 and 3 Ib. If there are two grades of ore, bessemer and non-bessemer, there are two sets of brass checks for each chute, each check stamped with the number of the chute; one set of checks has the word "bessemer" and the other "non-bessemer." Before any ore is removed from the chutes, it is the duty of one man to see that the proper set of checks is at each chute in the mine. As each motor car is loaded, a check is attached to it. When the train reaches the shaft, the sample man removes the check on the first car, notes the grade, and directs the motorman to spot it over the proper pocket. The check is then hung on a hook with the number corresponding to the chute from which the ore came. The sample man throws a short rope with a knot in the end over the car and at the point where the knot falls a standard scoopful is taken. This is placed in a large bag that hangs directly under the hook containing the checks for that particular chute. These chute samples represent a check on the grading of the various contracts and by counting the tags a check is obtained on the miner's tally of the ore going into each chute; the total of the checks represents the hoist. During the stocking season, a standard scoopful is taken from each top tram car. This sample is taken in the same way as the chute samples at the plats underground. Top-of-car Samples These samples are taken by using a rope, preferably a clothesline, knotted each 18 in. of its length, and a hammer and a scoop. The standard scoop measures 31/2 by 21/4 by 11/4 in. and holds about 1/2 Ib. of ore. The rope, as applied to the usual railroad cars at the mine, is knotted into fifteen sections. A case study describing the expansion of Marion County landfill is presented. The exapansion area is located on a deep mined area. Finite element analyses were used to predict the surface subsidence and associated tensile strains on the landfill liner of the expansion site. A synthetically reinforced liner system is recommended to minimize the impact of the subsurface movements on the integrity of the liner system.

SYNOPSIS Heart rates, oral temperatures, shovels/min and number of 3/4 ton cars/hour trammed over distances of up to 350 ft were measured in samples of 6-10 miners, engaged in tram-shovelling, at 76°, 84°, 86°, and 89°F wet bulb temperatures in stopes in a mine. From the results it has been concluded that a man with an 'average' maximum oxygen intake capacity of about 2. 8 litres/min should be able to work: at 6 shovels/min, or 30 cars/shift per two men, at 76°-84°F; at 5 shovels/min, or 27 cars/shift per two men, at 86°F; and at 4 shovels/min, or 24 cars/shift per two men, at 89°F wet bulb air temperatures. INTRODUCTION A number of gold mines in South Africa still use tram-shovelling extensively. In this method of rock removal from the face of the stope, Bantu mine workers load rock into cars and tram the cars to a centre gulley where they are emptied. Previous studies from this Laboratory3 have shown that tram-shovelling is one of the most arduous tasks underground. The rate of energy expenditure is relatively high, being an oxygen consumption of about 1.4 litres/min over a period of some hours. In cool air conditions the upper limit to the rate of production of the well-motivated men employed on tram-shovelling has been shown1 to depend upon their capacities for physical work of an endurance nature (as measured by their maximum oxygen intakes). However, in hot conditions the factors which set the upper limit to the rate of production are different. They are primarily the ability of the body to maintain a heat balance between the rate of heat production, due to physical work, and the hot atmosphere, so that the men do not develop excessively high body temperatures8. In order to give mine managers guidance on the 'optimum' rate of production of Bantu mine workers engaged upon tram-shovelling under different temperature conditions underground a study was carried out in a mine. The number of shovels per minute and cars per hour were recorded and heart rates and oral temperatures were measured throughout the duration of the shift on samples of 6-10 Bantu mine workers in different air conditions. The results of the study are recorded in this paper and conclusions are drawn as to the number of shovels per minute and cars per hour which Bantu mine workers of 'average' maximum oxygen intake capacity should be able to produce at wet bulb air temperatures of between 76° and 89°F without either excessive fatigue or danger of heat illness.

Few members of the general public have a clear understanding of mineral resources. Most people do not know how minerals are mined or why they must be extracted from many diverse locations. Many people acquire knowledge of mineral development from mass media sources with incomplete details or obvious anti-mining bias. The California Mineral Education Foundation was formed in 1991 to provide educational opportunities for the public and industry. There have been major changes in earth science teaching requirements for kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) curricula since the passage of California Senate Bill 813 in 1983. Model graduation standards, curriculum standards and the state science framework mandate substantial coverage of geoscience topics. The California State Commission on Teacher Credentialing has completed changes in multiple subject and single subject science credentials which will require more geoscience preparation for all teachers. The need for pre-service and in-service education in geoscience is at an all time high. Teachers must have continuing education to maintain their credentials and many are now seeking information in geoscience. The California Mineral Education Foundation designed and conducted the California Mineral Education Conferences held in August 1991 and 1992. The conferences involved lectures and field trips on mining geology, environmental problems and political concerns. Master teachers were employed to share how they get across mineral resource concepts in the classroom. Ninety-six percent of the participants stated that they had changed to a more positive perception of mining after taking the three day course.

THIS paper presents the design and operation of a frothmeter capable of measuring the frothing characteristics of pine oils and other frothing reagents. The experimental data show that the frothability of pine oil is governed by: 1-rate of aeration, 2-time of aeration, 3-height of liquid column, 4-chemical composition of pine oil, 5-pH value of solution, 6-temperature of, solution, and 7-concentration of pine oil in solution. The effect of mineral particles on the behavior of froth also was studied, and the results can be found in a separate paper.1 The results also show that the relative frothabilities of pine oils in the frothmeter generally correlate with those in actual flotation, provided that other factors are kept constant. In addition to pine oils, the other well-established flotation frothers were tested, and the results are included. In this paper, compressed air frothing is the frothing process performed by means of purified compressed air, whereas sucked air frothing is the frothing process accomplished by purified air sucked into the glass cylinder by a vacuum system. The term vacuum frothing denotes that froth was formed by degassing of the air-saturated liquid under a closed vacuum system. Apparatus The frothmeter, shown in Fig. 1, is capable of reproducibly measuring the volume and persistence of froth as well as the volume of air bubbles entrapped in the liquid and is capable of being used for compressed air frothing, sucked air frothing, and vacuum frothing. Fig. la shows that for compressed air frothing, the apparatus consists of an airflow regulating system, 1-3; a purifying and drying system, 4-8; a standardized flowmeter to measure the rate of airflow from zero to 500 cc per sec, 9; and a graduated glass cylinder, 13; equipped with an air regulating stopcock, 10; an air chamber, 11; and a fritted glass disk to produce froth, 12. The fritted glass disk, 5 cm in diam and 0.3 cm thick, has an average pore diameter of 85 to 145 microns. The pyrex glass cylinder has a uniform ID of 5.588 cm and an effective height of 63 cm. The inside cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder was calculated to be 24.53 sq cm, or 3.8 sq in. For sucked air frothing, Fig. lb shows that the apparatus for compressed air frothing is used again, with the following modifications: 1-compressed air and its regulating system, 1-3, are eliminated; and 2-a vacuum system, 16, equipped with a vapor trap, 15, and a vacuum manometer, 17, is added. The vacuum system can be .either a water aspirator or a laboratory vacuum pump. Any desired rate of airflow can be drawn into the glass cylinder, 13, by adjusting the opening of the air regulating stopcock, 10. The sucked air stream is cleaned by the purifing and drying system, 4-8, before entering the glass cylinder, 13. When this setup is used for vacuum frothing, the air regulating stopcock is closed. The frothmeter has been used for almost 3 years and has proved to give reproducible results, as illustrated in Table I. With a magnifying glass and suitable illumination, the frothmeter also can be used to study the attachment of air bubbles to coarse mineral particles.2 Experimental Procedures Except where otherwise stated, the data presented were established by means of the compressed air method. The volume and persistence of froth were recorded respectively at the end of 4 and 6 min of aeration at a constant rate of airflow of 29.3 cc per sec which is equivalent to 71.6 cc per sq cm per min, or 462.6 cc per sq in. per min. The aqueous solution for each test, containing 1000 cc of distilled water and 19.2 ± 0.5 mg frothing reagent, was adjusted to a pH of 6.9 ± 0.2. The volume of froth is expressed as cubic centimeter per square centimeter and is equivalent to the height of the froth column (the distance between the bottom and the meniscus of the froth). The volume of froth was obtained by multiplying the height of froth by the cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder, 24.53 sq cm. Before each test, the glass cylinder, 13, was cleaned thoroughly with jets of tap water, ethyl alcohol, tap water, cleaning solution, tap water, and finally distilled water. Since the days of Newcomen and Watt, when men first sought to turn the energy of fuels to useful purposes, coal-generated steam has supplied most of the power needed for both stationary and mobile applications. The low efficiency and large water requirements of the nineteenth century steam-power plant caused many engineers to turn their thoughts toward more direct means of converting heat into power. As far back as 1791, John Barber secured an English patent on a combination' which he might well have called a "gas turbine." He proposed to generate producer gas from coal or charcoal, to burn it under pressure in air obtained from a reciprocating compressor, and to drive a turbine wheel with the resultant hot combustion products. With the optimism characteristic of the inventor, he hoped that the turbine would not only operate his compressor but also perform useful work. There is no record that Barber ever built his machine, but if he had done so he would have learned that useful power can result from such a combination only when both turbine and compressor are highly efficient and when the temperature of the gas entering the turbine is not far below 1000°F. Hot-air prime movers continued to attract attention, and both Stirling in England and Ericsson in America2 built reciprocating engines that operated with some success upon coal-heated air. The internal-combustion engine, burning liquid fuels, supplanted the hot-air type, and, for the first time, challenged the supremacy of both the steam cycle and its familiar fuel, coal. Liquid Fuels Compete with Coal As the increasing use of the automobile multiplied the demand for gasoline, the supply of residual fuel increased rapidly, and heavy oil declined in price to the point where it became competitive with coal. First in the marine field and later in stationary plants in areas adjacent to refineries, oil began to be widely used. Oil's greater convenience and higher heating value per pound of weight or per cubic foot of bunker space have caused it to take over much of the marine field. The introduction of the highly efficient diesel engine, capable of burning a fuel that is cheaper than gasoline, again threatened the position of coal, for the operating costs of the diesel became directly competitive with those of coal-burning equipment. In isolated power plants and smaller marine installations, the diesel provided the medium by which oil again successfully invaded fields formerly dominated by coal. The diesel engine, provided with an electrical transmission, found an excellent application in railroad service. Some current authors are beginning to give more attention to the part luck/black swans/outliers play in success. This is not a new phenomenon, Machiavelli had a lot to say about it back in the Renaissance. So how can knowledge of this dynamic help in a modern organization? INTRODUCTION Work hard and you will succeed. Go to the right school, major in the right degree, study hard, and get a good job. Look at the lives of successful people, and do what they do. Be all that you can be. You can be anything you want to be. Really? Those who are successful always get attention, people want to know what they did to reach such a high position. Invariably, at least part of their narrative will include hard work, wise insight, taking advantage of opportunities, etc. If they are of a more generous nature, they might also allow that building the right friendships and collaborations also played a role. All of this may be true; what we do not often hear are the stories of those who did all of these very same things, but did not find success. An example from pop culture: The Voice. I have watched this show occasionally the past couple of years. One of the things I like about the show is that the initial screening of contestants is based solely on their singing voice (hence the name of the show), and not on their appearance. At the time of this writing (early November), the judges have just finished elimination rounds for their final teams to go on to the live shows. Here is my point—in almost every case the judges agonized over choosing who would go forward and who would be eliminated. And the reason is because all of them are really talented singers. It is impressive how gifted they are. At the end of each season, only one is declared a winner, out of that gifted pool of singers. When you hear their stories, they are all talented, hard-working individuals sacrificing for their art. And as far as I know, none of them has ever become a star. Hard work, dedication, sacrifice, talent—sometimes it is enough, sometimes not. I will be looking at the part uncertainty/luck/black swans play in our lives, but I want to make it clear at the beginning that I am not saying everything that happens to us is out of our hands or beyond our control. Taleb makes this same point (2007, p. 52): “This problem is chronic: if you tell people that the key to success is not always skills, they think that you are telling them that it is never skills, always luck.”"
