"Tell us how you got involved in mining and about your career path.My dad was a coal miner and my uncle was a metallurgist, so when I enrolled at Penn State’s New Kensington Campus, I chose the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences — exact majors didn’t get picked till the end of your sophomore year. Penn State New Ken had an associate degree in mining program and one of the guys in my carpool was going to take Mining 30 in the evening and the other guy (mechanical engineer) was also able to take an evening class. I didn’t want to break up the carpool, so I took Mining 30, complete with essay tests. I could write, so I did well, and the professor said I should go into mining engineering. Fast forward to the end of the next term at University Park, and I realized there wasn’t enough chemistry in mining. Switching to metallurgy would have meant another term at that point, so Dr. Lovell, my advisor, trotted me down the hall and to the next building and said I was a mineral processor. That stuck. I was a summer student at U.S. Steel Research between my junior and senior year and they paid for my master’s degree — all about clay and macerals in coal flotation. During that time, the steel industry tanked, and I thought a Ph.D. would be a good idea — I could always teach at the university level if I had those credentials. The Electric Power Research Institute had a Coal Cleaning Test Facility in Homer City, PA, and I conducted my Ph.D. research on rate and residence time in conventional coal froth flotation cells there and at a local cleaning plant. I went to work at the test facility in 1987 (later CQ Inc.) and stayed there until I started PrepTech Inc. in 1997. PrepTech offers some consulting services for coal cleaning plants and sells mineral processing equipment, mostly to coal companies. I can’t believe it’s been 21 years.And what about your SME career?Of course, I was a student SME member at Penn State. We used many of the SME books in class, so who wouldn’t want the student discount? While in Homer City, I became involved with the Appalachian Plateau Subsection of the Pittsburgh Section. We’d hold quarterly meetings with interesting speakers and had good attendance. I was the secretary. I’m still the secretary and also get the bank statements. We’ll need to close that out some time, but I guess I’ve been hoping for resurgence in the Indiana/Cambria/ Somerset area."

THE problem of drying ores is one that most mill-engineers are sooner or later called upon to meet, and it may be timely to point out sortie of the difficulties resulting from such operations from purely a metallurgical and economic stand-point. We mean, in the following pages, to discuss primarily the effect of such operations on. the ore itself, without particular reference to the mechanical or cost features of the subject; That an appreciable tonnage of the ore fed to the usual form of drier, either rotary or stack, is lost, is fairly well appreciated, but we believe that only a few mill-managers know just. what their drier-losses amount to, and we have found that in most cases they console themselves with the fact that the drier-smoke is not very much discolored, and it is generally believed that the draft is not sufficient to carry away more than a. negligible percentage of the values. The drying of ores is becoming an important factor. since the more general application of magnetic, static, and dry-table treatment. Its importance in the field of metallurgical operations warrants a close examination into its effects. This subject has been repeatedly brought hone to us, and while the drier-losses, in every case examined, have considerably exceeded even the most generous estimate, an attempt at a recovery of these values is rarely made. We have found that the losses resulting from drying-operations can be effectively recovered, at a low cost, and believe that the publication of the results of a number of investigations along these lines will be of interest and benefit to the profession at large. "The morphology of the surface of sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite and the adsorption of butyl xanthate under conditions of preliminary treatment of minerals by the products of water electrolysis were studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Diffuse Reflection Infrared Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). It was determined that practically all types of treatment by electrochemically modified water (a product of non-diaphragmatic treatment, anolyte and catholyte) lead to an increase of surface roughness of the studied minerals due to formation of small rounded shape particles. In contrast to that, after treatment of chalcopyrite by anolyte, its surface becomes smoother. Various effects of treatment by the water electrolysis products on the adsorption of chemical and physical forms of butyl xanthate on the studied sulfides were established. As a result, the efficiency of the complex of AFM and FTIR methods, as one of the ex-situ approaches for monitoring the surface state of sulfide minerals and direct investigation of BKx adsorption products was demonstrated.INTRODUCTION In mineral processing, copper-zinc sulfide ores are one of the most complex products in view of their mineral composition, fine dissemination, complex inter-growth and the proximity of the technological characteristics of copper, zinc and iron sulfides. For the most complete disintegration, fine grinding of ores to a size of 0.074-0.044 mm is necessary. Consequently, the main method for processing of such ores is flotation, which bases on the difference in physical and chemical properties of the mineral surfaces, in particular, degree of wettability. The separation of copper and zinc minerals and their separation from ferrous and other sulfides, sulfosalts and rock mineral is a very difficult task (Chanturiya, 2000). For the successful separation of copper and zinc minerals in the appropriate selective concentrates, it is necessary to find conditions for the most complete liberation of ore and rock-forming minerals and for increase the contrast in physical and chemical properties of their surfaces. Despite significant progress in the processing of copper-zinc sulfide ores, the problem of the selectivity of the separation of the main ore minerals has not yet been fully solved and requires innovative approaches (Chanturiya, 2015). To date, various methods of preliminary energy processing of complex ores are used: magnetic pulse treatment, impact by high-voltage nanosecond pulses, electrochemical effects (including products of water electrolysis (Chanturiya et al., 2014; Bunin et al., 2015; Chanturiya et al., 2014a; Chanturiya et al., 2016), processing with flotation reagents, etc. Electrochemical treatment of water in various modes allows to obtain products of electrolysis with different oxidation-reduction properties: acid anolyte with a high oxidation potential and dissolved oxygen content, an alkaline catholyte with high reducing properties and a product of non-diaphragmatic treatment with enhanced reduction properties."

This Bureau of Mines report presents the results of a microseismic study conducted in the Climax block cave mine at Climax, Colo. Rock noises created by caving were monitored and their sources located during a 3-month period. A planar array of seven accelerometers, located above the block of ore being caved, detected the rock noise. A computer was used to calculate the location of the microseismic activity, using a traveltime difference method. The accuracy of these locations was estimated to be ±20 feet. An analysis of the data taken during the recording period showed a concentration of microseismic events located in the wall of the cave panel. This concentration of events was found to occur in a "high-silica" geologic forma-tion that cut across the caving panel approximately 200 feet behind the undercut.

In this paper, a geostatistical study of the North Butte roll type uranium deposit is presented. The geostatistical procedure applied takes into account the varying direction of the roll front for reserves calculations. For variogram calculation, the roll front is unfolded thereby allowing estimation of the variogram in directions parallel to and perpendicular to the roll front. Variograms calculated in unfolded space show strong directional anisotropies consistent with the anticipated configuration of the deposit.

In 2014 the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) awarded a Design-Build contract to the joint venture team consisting of Skanska which is the managing partner; Kiewit Corporation and Ecco III (SKE) and HNTB as the lead design firm. The design build team employed methods to provide schedule savings and commercial benefits to the owner NYSDOT. This paper presents the design approach and construction methods used to accelerate drilled shaft installation supporting the main span foundation for the cable stayed bridge. The drilled foundation contractor Underpinning and Foundation Skanska, a division of Skanska was responsible for assisting with design, budgeting and construction of the drilled shaft foundation construction. As part of the Request for Proposal (RFP) bid process, Alternate Technical Concepts (ATC) was encouraged by the NYSDOT. The JV team proposed an ATC which involved a scaled production shaft testing method to simulate the ultimate load level, commonly referred to as the “Chicago Method” was used in the rock socket employing the Osterberg Cell (O-Cell) testing procedures. To the authors knowledge this was the first NYSDOT project where this approach was utilized on a Demonstration/Production installation to validate construction procedures and load bearing capacities. Construction procedures, challenges and solutions are discussed in detail. Upon completion of successful drilled shaft construction, concrete integrity is verified using two methods – Cross Hole Sonic Logging (CSL) and Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP). A comparison from the contractor’s perspective is provided. Finally the drilled shaft rock socket is tested to ultimate end bearing values while rock socket side shear stresses are not exceeding the service level loading. Lateral load test was also a RFP requirement; the test arrangement and performance are discussed in detail as well. The Kosciuszko Bridge location poised unique geotechnical challenges on many levels shifting towards an extreme boundary of parameters encountered in New York City Area for drilled shaft construction. The JV team and specialty drilled shaft contractor actively participating in the shaft design and construction practice coordination and working with NYSDOT yielded a successful foundation solution which provided cost and schedule savings to the project.

1. Introductory Remarks.—The Haile Gold Mine is in Lancaster county, South Carolina, 3 1/2 miles east of Kershaw station on the Charleston, Cincinnati and Chicago Railway. It was first opened about, the year 1832, and since that time has passed through various fortunes. Many different operations have been practiced here for extracting the gold : panning, grinding in Chilian mills or arrastras, stamping, the Designolle process, dry-crushing, and finally the Thies process of barrel-chlorination, which has now been in successful use for 2 1/2 years, and by which 36,000 tons of ore have been treated profitably. The uses for which ground talcs are suited closely depend upon their physical and chemical properties , but , in spite of this fact , little scientific investigation has been made in order to devise quick and accurate tests for the determination of these properties . The chemical properties of talc are inherent and may not be altered or modified except by selective mining or by chemical processes not practical in the present status of the industry . However , the determination of chemical properties is not so important , for most uses , as of physical properties , although sometimes certain chemical characteristics are perhaps unduly insisted upon by chemists in some industries . Physical properties are dependent both upon mineralogical characteristics and upon methods of grinding and sizing and may thus be partly changed or modified by changes in practice . There is so little known of the chemistry and physics of the various processes in which talc is used that the purchase and sale of talc is governed more by rule- of- thumb methods dependent upon individual opinion and often , prejudice , than by accurate , standard tests . This not only causes unwarranted price fluctuations , but injures both the producing and consuming industries by creating false ideas of the suitability of talc for various uses . It thus seems important that present tests be standardized and made uniform for the whole industry , and that new tests devised to fill the existing gaps .

This interpretation of the mining legislation of Madagascar was prepared from the best information (in French) available in Washington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consular officers, to whom it dill be referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. INTRODUCTION The basic mining law of Madagascar is the decree of 1923, signed at Rambouillet by the President of France on July 19, and published in the Journal Official de Madagascar et Dependances. It has been modified by a number of subsequent laves and regulations, generally of minor importance.

Job tasks that involve exposure to work-related musculoskeletal disorder (WMSD) risk factors may impact both the risk of injury and production downtime. Common WMSD risks factors associated with mining tasks include forceful exertions, awkward postures, repetitive motion, jolting and jarring, forceful gripping, contact stress, and whole body and segmental vibration. Mining environments that expose workers to temperature/humidity extremes, windy conditions, and slippery and uneven walking surfaces also contribute to injury risk. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers worked with powder crew members from the Bridger Coal Company to identify and rank routine work tasks based on perceived exposure to WMSD risk factors. This article presents the process followed to identify tasks that workers believed involved the greatest exposure to risk factors and discusses risk reduction strategies. Specifically, the proposed prill truck design changes addressed cab ingress/egress, loading blast holes, and access to the upper deck of the prill truck.

A kinetic study of the carbon deposition reaction was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines as part of a broad investigation of metallurgical reactions in the iron ore blast furnace. The disproportionation of carbon monoxide on iron pellets was investigated at carbon monoxide pressures between 0.5 and 2 atmospheres (absolute) and temperatures from 400° to 1,075° C. Gas flow in the range from 0.25 to 0.85 standard liter per minute was found to have little effect on the reaction velocity. The addition of nitrogen and helium to caron monoxide exerted only a dilution effect on the rate of carbon deposition. However, an addition of 1 percent hydrogen increased the rate about 100 times. Small amounts of carbon dioxide in the inlet gas exerted little effect on the rate of carbon deposition. The maximum rate for carbon deposition in the first 2 hours occurred at 550° C. The apparent molar activation energies at various stages of the reaction were found to vary from 13 kcal initially to 36 kcal during the latter stages of the reaction. The reaction rate behavior was tentatively explained by an adsorption step followed by the diffusion of iron through a shell of inactive iron carbide.

Talvivaara deposits, Kuusilampi and Kolmisoppi, comprise one of the largest sulfide nickel resources in the world with 642 Mt in Measured and Indicated Resource categories. TalvivaaraÆs preferred extraction technology is bioheapleaching, which is already widely used for other metals, notably copper and gold. The company has demonstrated the viability of bioheapleaching technology for the extraction of nickel using the Talvivaara ore. The leaching process is heat generating and therefore suitable for the subarctic climatic conditions. The planned annual metal production is 33 000 t of nickel, 60 000 t of zinc, 10 000 t of copper and 1200 t of cobalt. Talvivaara deposits are well-suited for open pit mining due to a thin overburden, favourable resource geometry and a low waste to ore ratio. The ore is relatively low-grade, but well suited to bioheapleaching due to its high sulfide content. Bioheapleaching is a process whereby metals are leached from ore as a result of bacterial action. The bacteria used in the Talvivaara bioheapleaching process are endemic to the area and therefore well adjusted to the prevailing environmental conditions. The solution is collected at the bottom of the heaps and either re-circulated through the heap or fed to metal recovery. In metal recovery, nickel, copper, zinc and cobalt are precipitated from the pregnant leach solution and filtered to produce saleable metal products. After the metals are removed, the solution is further purified and returned to irrigate the heaps. Mining, bioheapleaching and metal recovery techniques for the Talvivaara mine have been tested in a 17 000 t on-site demonstration trial during 2005 and 2006. Subsequent construction of the mine started in 2007 and commercial production in the fourth quarter of 2008.

The use of polysilicates for treating heavy metals in soils and mining sludges is discussed. Results of the treatment are given for soil contaminated in a metal scrap yard operation and for copper mining processing sludges. The types of metals of concern are arsenic, lead, copper, nickel, cadmium, and zinc. The application of the treatment is predicated on the mixture and relative concentrations of the metals as well as the material matrix. Reductions in soluble concentrations (STLC or TCLP) of one to two orders of magnitude can be achieved with relatively small additions of silicates and cementitious materials.

Mining operations, whether new or existing, are constantly looking for ways to maximize production and improve energy efficiency, while keeping the footprint required to a minimum. The Nordberg MP1250 cone crusher was designed with these three goals in mind. A series of side-by-side evaluations comparing an MP1250 to an MP1000 were completed at two Freeport-McMoRan operations. The first evaluation began October 2009 in a tertiary position and the second began March 2010 in a secondary position, where it remains in full production today. Utilizing 25% higher power capacity than the existing MP1000 tertiary crushers, the MP1250 had 29% higher capacity and 17% lower specific energy, adjusted for differences in feed and product size. The MP1250 compared to the existing MP1000 secondary crushers achieved 30% higher capacity at a slightly reduced specific energy, while achieving a finer product. The MP1250?s higher capacity and energy efficiency may have application in many crushing plants. Depending on site specific economic factors, greenfield projects may benefit from a smaller footprint and less ancillary equipment, whereas brownfield projects may benefit from higher capacity or a finer product within the same footprint.

METALLURGISTS and mill operators appreciate, in a general way, .the economic or commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product but few have correlated in detail fluctuating metal prices with the metallurgy. They know that many factors such as metal price, dedusiions for returning charge, transportation, percentage of metal in head ore, etc.; all affect the commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product. In practically every mill some one at some ' time has calculated the amount of recovery that can be sacrificed for each percentage increase in grade of concentrate and from this calculated ratio the commercial or ., economic tail has been established. Such a ratio finally becomes a well-entrenched rule by which the progress of the metallurgy is judged.. When once established, these-, ratios are but seldom corrected to changes of metal prices for each possible grade of concentrate that may be produced. The calculation is tedious when often repeated. Other methods have been suggested and used to correlate the commercial with the metallurgical phase. A factor .derived ,by multiplying the grade of concentrate by recovery is often used, but is of little importance because it does not possess a single commercial quantity. The percentage monetary recovery calculated by dividing the gross value of the ore into the net smelter return gives a good economic index and, is to be commended, but it is difficult to correlate exactly and quickly the work of each day on a commercial basis.

Analytic expressions were developed and applied in two preuious papers to predict effects of solidification variables on macrosegvegation. In this paper, experiments are reported to test the analyses quantitatively and qualitatively. Good quantitative agreement is obtained between predicted and measured compositions for the following types of segregation (all experiments were on laboratory-size ingots of Al-4.5 pct Cu alloy): (a) inuerse segregation, (b) composition distribution in ingots solidified with unidirectional heat and fluid flow, (c) simulated centerline segregation, and (d) segregation resulting fro, change in solidification cross section. In addition, qualitative agreement of prediction of theory with experiment is obtained for (a) segregation resulting from sudden change in heat extraction during solidification, (b) centerline segregation in a bidirectionally solidified ingot, and (c) under-riser positive segregation. IN two previous papers,''2 it was shown that a variety of apparently different types of macrosegregation result from the same basic mechanism. This mechanism is the flow of solute -rich liquid to feed solidification and thermal contractions. Analytic expressions were derived and examples given of their application to predict macrosegregation. Calculations were for Al-4.5 pct Cu alloy. In this paper, we describe a series of experiments designed to test results of the foregoing calculations. All experiments were on laboratory-size ingots (weighing 10 lb or less), of A1-4.5 pct Cu alloy, nominal composition. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE A typical mold and chilling arrangement used for unidirectional solidification is shown in Fig. 1. Before casting, this assembly was placed in an electrically heated air furnace, and heated to 680" to 700°C. When the plaster reached the desired temperature (usually 1 to 2 hr after the furnace temperature), the mold was filled through a funnel extending from the outside of the furnace into the cavity. The assembly, with liquid, was held for several minutes to allow convection to subside. The coolant, either air or water (depending on the desired solidification rate), was turned on and the ingot solidified. With the four sides and top insulated, heat removal for solidification was through the bottom surface, resulting in a fully columnar structure. Design of the casting cavity was varied, as discussed below, to produce desired macrosegregation effects. However, for castings solidified with unidirectional heat flow, the top was always open to the furnace atmosphere and temperature. The bottom sur- face rested on a chill through which the heat was extracted, and all other surfaces were insulated with plaster. In one case to be discussed, the mold design was changed to obtain bidirectional solidification. In this case, two vertical chills were used (on two faces of the mold) and the bottom was insulated. In a last case discussed, that dealing with under-riser segregation, experiments were conducted in bottom-chilled sand molds at ambient temperature. Except for this one case, all experiments were conducted in the electrically heated air furnace as described above. In many ingots, thermocouples were used to obtain continuous records of solidification. In all cases, these were chromel-alumel couples with output continuously monitored on a twelve-channel recorder. Where thermocouples were employed, these were embedded in the refractory mold walls during mold-making so their heads extended to the vertical centerline. Six to nine couples were employed, placed at intervals from the chill. METAL-MEL TING PROCEDURE Aim analysis was A1-4.5 pct Cu; alloy was prepared from high-purity aluminum (99.9 pct Al) and A1-Cu master alloy (50 pctOFHC Copper, 50 pct high-purity Al). The A1-4.5 pct Cu alloy was cast in 5- to 7-lb ingots for subsequent remelting for the macrosegregation experiments. Melting for ingot casting was as follows. After preheating the melting crucible for an hour or more, the charge was melted and superheated to a temperature of 690" to 720°C. After stirring, the melt was degassed with chlorine for 10 min. Andalusite is an excellent raw material for refractory applications due to its high aluminum oxide content and phase transformation to mullite at high temperature. Granular andalusite in particle sizes of about 1 to 2 mm was traditionally utilized for the manufacturing of refractory brick. However, if powder andalusite in micron particle size is utilized in high-alumina refractory products, reinforcement on the refractory brick can be obtained and the sintering temperature can be decreased. The phase transformation of powder andalusite plays a key role for the difference.

Many tailings storage facilities in the Rustenburg region of South Africa’s North-West Province are founded on reworked residual norite derived from the weathering of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. With the implementation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management, increased emphasis is placed on robust material characterisation, but laboratory testing is challenging. The results of Oedometer and undrained triaxial shear testing support a nonlinear failure envelope for effective stresses below the yield stress, transitioning to linear behaviour at higher stresses.
