In this U.S. Bureau of Mines report, the conditions required for the direct reconstruction of a tomogram from observed line integrals are examined. Because of the limited access to the working faces in coal mines, the special case of access to only two opposite faces is emphasized. Classical matrix methods were used for small dimensional (2 by 2, 3 by 3, and 4 by 4) applications to determine the limitations and the requirements for a solution. The results for large (n by n) grids were then inferred and generalized from those of the smaller grids and matrices. Limited access tomography is found to be appropriate for in-seam hazard detection from seismic and microwave data, but it is shown that additional data must be added to obtain a direct solution.

Long before recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It is well known that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica-containing material have a great many uses in modern society. This material, however, is potentially an extreme health hazard. Silicosis: Not a New Disease Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. He was obviously describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. Silicosis was certainly described by Agricola in his De Re Metallica published in 1556. Here he described lung disease among hard-rock miners. The original document was written in Latin and then translated in 1912 by Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former US president who once made his living as a mining engineer. More recently, there are numerous references in medical literature in the 19th and 20th centuries relating silica exposure to silicosis. There are specific references to mining in hard rock, as well as to sandblasting and a host of other industrial exposures. In 1919, Winslow described standards for measuring the efficiency of exhaust systems in polishing shops using sandblasting. These standards were equally applicable in the mining industry. As early as 1920, Winslow explored the efficiency of certain devices used to protect sand-blasters against the dust hazard. These devices were equally applicable in the hard-rock mining industry. The medical community recognized the silica health hazard in the early 1900s. Middleton described the illness in the British Medical Journal in 1929. He noted the danger to health at that time. D. Hunter mentions in his book, The Diseases of Occupations (1969), the monumental work of Merryweather in 1936, in which he surveyed the silicosis risk in Great Britain. He showed statistically that the average employment length of sandblasters who ultimately died of silicosis was 10.3 years, compared to 40.1 years for all fatal cases, irrespective of occupation. Sandblasting and hard-rock mining and drilling, obviously, are very hazardous occupations. Weil and Zisking of Tulane University wrote in 1975 that "it was known as early as 1935 that the course of silicosis is much more rapid in sandblasters than in miners or foundry workers. This can be explained by the fact that sandblasters are exposed to an almost pure siliceous dust containing high concentrations of respirable particles within the range of 1 to 3 micron size." Protecting the Worker The medical community recognized in the early 1900s the need for proper protective equipment for all of those who worked with siliceous materials. Middleton, writing in 1929, said: "The worker is then protected by a close fitting helmet with an air feed, much as in the case of an underwater diver. In spite of these precautions, cases of silicosis among sandblasters are being met with today. It is a matter for serious consideration whether a substitute, such as steel or iron grit, could not be used to replace the siliceous grit as the abrading material." C. E. A. Thiourea is a reagent capable of complexing gold and silver. With the proper oxidant, thiourea can effectively dissolve metallic gold and silver. A thiourea leaching system possesses potential advantages over conventional cyanidation including acidic solutions instead of alkaline, cationic complexes in contrast to metal-cyanide anionic complexes, and faster leaching rates with acidic solution of thiourea. Generally, the rate of metal dissolution in thiourea solutions is fastest when ferric ion is employed as an oxidant. Acidic thiourea solutions for certain applications could offer a nontoxic and noncorrosive option for processing gold and silver. This paper provides information regarding the fundamental chemistry of the acidic thiourea system, and reviews the dissolution of both silver and gold in acidic solutions of thiourea. The recovery of gold and silver from acidic thiourea solution is discussed.

Alaska?s known mineral endowment includes some of the largest and highest grade deposits of various metals, including gold, copper and zinc. Recently, Alaska has also been active in the worldwide search for sources of rare earth elements (REE) to replace exports now being limitedby China. Driven by limited supply of the rare earths, combined with their increasing use in new ?green? energy, lighting, transportation, and many other technological applications, the rare earth metals neodymium, europium and, in particular, the heavy rare earth elements terbium, dysprosium and yttrium are forecast to soon be in critical short supply (U.S. Department of Energy, 2010). The REE, accompanied by other high field strength metals (such as Nb, Zr, Ti, Th, W), are associated with alkaline complexes of the Hogatza Belt in northwest Alaska; peraluminous tin-granites of the Ruby batholith in central Alaska and the Porcupine plateau in the northeast; and peralkaline intrusive complexes in the southwest Alaska Range west of Anchorage, and on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska. Limited evidence suggests that the heavy REE are associated with deposits that became more highly evolved by late hydrothermal processes.

The effectiveness of ultrasonic velocity measurements and attenuation of the propagating pulse was evaluated as a means of Non-Destructive characterization of cold worked and annealed copper. Commercial copper is subjected to mechanical working such as forging, rolling and thermal treatment to induce re-crystallization. The microstructural changes that occur in copper and a variation in its mechanical properties are subjected to analysis using the ultrasonic technique. The signal processing is carried out using the wavelet analysis technique. The features of wavelet analysis namely, localization in space and the presence of an infinite set of basis functions allows removing noise from the time series and components of a non-stationary signal to be analyzed. This is seen to improve the accuracy of the results obtained from the ultrasonic technique in the case of copper, which has distinct coarse grains that are difficult to inspect due to backscattering from the grain boundaries.

The escalation of oil prices comiencing in 1973 meant that nickel laterite refineries using oil as an energy source were placed at distinct disadvantage relative to sulphide refineries or those with coal derived energy. The Queensland Nickel refinery commenced a construction programme; in 1980 to allow ore drying and power generation to be converted from oil to coal. Since late 1981 ore drying has been undertaken using heated air from two moving grate spreader grate stokers. The changeover from oil to coal drying proceeded without process disruptions. This paper discusses the plant changes required to allow the receipt of coal and the operating performance obtained from the coal fired air heaters.

This paper discusses the research results of sulphide ore properties with respects on self-heating and the assessment techniques on mine spontaneous combustion for several mines of sulphide ores in China. A group of experimental devices for testing the chemical behaviour of sulphide minerals, the geological structures, the rate of oxygen absorption, the initial self-heating temperature, and the ignition point of ore samples, etc. are also described in detail. These methods have been proved to be effective by several sulphide mines which all have the history of spontaneous combustion of sulphide ores. INTRODUCTION A fire disaster from the spontaneous combustion of sulphide ores in a mine can produce large quantities of toxic gases and heat to pollute the working environment, lead to large economic losses and loss of human life, and even compell the mine to be closed. Some mines of copper, lead, zinc, tin and iron in China are of high content of sulphur. It is of great importance to evaluate the potential of spontaneous combustion of sulphide ores before beginning to design and mine the ore deposits. At present, the mechanism of spontaneous combustion accepted commonly is that sulphide ores undergo slow oxidation on exposure to moisture air at ambient temperature, with the evolution of heat, gases and moisture. The heat generated, if not dissipated, gives rise to an increase in the temperature of the sulphide ores. As the temperature of the sulphide ores rises, the rate of oxidation increases. If this is allowed to proceed unchecked it can eventually result in the ignition of the sulphide ores. For pyrite (FeS2), it reacts with oxygen and water according to the following equations.

Tailings produced from the iron ore industry present many challenges due to the high economic and environmental impacts involved with their disposal. However, the relative scarcity of high-grade iron ores has driven manufacturers to recover and recycle these valuable tailings (secondary sources). This study aimed at the purification of ultrafine tailings with high sulphur content from an iron ore concentrator via reverse flotation to produce pellet feed fines. A specially designed flotation column featured with a nano bubble generator and a conventional bubble generator were employed to assess the effects of nano bubbles on the desulfurisation performance of iron ore concentrate under different operating conditions. Results obtained from this study indicated that the sulphur content of iron concentrate could be reduced from 1.2% to 0.22% in the presence of nano bubbles. Also, the results showed that use of nano-micro bubbles increased sulphur recovery 20% more, in comparison to micro bubbles. In the commercial annealing of cartridge brass there are four points regarding which definite data are essential. They have to do with the correct interpretation of grain count in its relation to annealing temperature and, incidentally, to Brinell hardness. These points are: 1. The comparison of the grain sizes of two cartridge-brass mixtures: 69 copper, 31 zinc, 0.376-in. (9.5-mm.) gage; and 68 copper, 32 zinc, 0.130-in. (3.3-mm.) gage 2. The comparison of the grain sizes of annealed metal that had previously been reduced by rolling varying amounts; for instance, 20.0, 36.6, 50.9, and 59.1 per cent. 3. The determination of standards for grain sizes on annealed brass of the composition 68 per cent. copper, 32 per cent. zinc and 69 copper, 31 zinc. 4. The comparison of grain size with Brinell hardness on identical samples of annealed metal. In their comprehensive and thorough investigation of the recrystal-lization of cold-worked alpha brass on annealing,l Mathewson and Phillips have discussed the relations between temperature of anneal, degree of deformation, and structural alteration in alpha brass. They have also shown certain comparisons between the ordinary physical properties and the grain size of annealed brass. The purpose of the present investigation is mainly concerned with the grain size of cartridge brass, its relation to Brinell hardness, and the publication of sufficient data to enable those engaged in the inspection of such material to have a correct foundation upon which to work. The first alloy was taken from regular mill stock that had been rolled from 0.580 in. to 0.376 in. (14.7 mm. to 9.5 mm.) gage, a reduction of 35.1 per cent. This bar (No. 1) had the following composition: Copper, 69.20 per cent.; zinc, 30.76 per cent.; lead, 0.02 per cent.; iron, 0.02 per cent. The second alloy was also taken from mill stock of 0.325 in. The Bureau of Mines has carried out experimental and theoretical studies with prilled and pulverized ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) mixtures containing varying amounts of fuel oil in an attempt to quantify the effects of stoichiometric composition, nonideal detonation behavior, and expansion volume on the production of CO, NO, and N02 fumes. Experimental fume measurements were obtained in the Bureau's large closed gallery facility (7.2 X 104 liter expansion chamber) and in the standard Crawshaw-Jones apparatus (90--liter expansion shamber) using a prepackaged charge configuration containing about 450 g of explosive.4 The theoretical calculation of toxic fumes was achieved with an equilibrium detonation code called "TIGER,," Contrary to initial expectations, the NOx (= NO + N02) fumes from the large gallery test were found to be in essential agreement with the Crawshaw-Jones results. It was also concluded that (1) "TIGER" calculations offer a good approach to the prediction of toxic fumes; (2) there is a basic problem in extrapolating laboratory measurements of CO fumes to mine conditions--this being due to postdetonation oxidation of CO to CO2; and (3) the detonation velocity decay rate of an explosive is a useful experimental parameter for correlating toxic fumes production with nonideal detonation behavior.

"In order to be able to map the variation in the concentration of elements in soils, it is necessary to sample at intervals that will give adequate coverage of the area and will allow determination of the rate of fluctuation of concentration with distance in any environment. This rate of fluctuation with distance can be referred to as the continuity of concentration.The continuity of concentration in soils varies according to the chemical characteristics of the element being considered, the underlying rock type or orebody and in response to the dispersion processes that operated during soil formation. Within any environment there is a maximum distance between sampling points within which adjacent sample values are related. This distance, the critical sampling interval, can be determined by means of a correlograrm.Where the sampling grid has been chosen to provide an adequate coverage over unmineralized rock, adjacent samples being related, anomalies may be missed if the element continuity in the anomaly is less than in the background. Results show that a knowledge of the critical sampling interval of the environment being examined may used to select a more efficient sampling pattern for a geochemical survey."

LOCAL yearly taxes levied on bituminous coal lands in Pennsylvania have become a cost of first importance to the coal industry of the State. In Pennsylvania there is no State tax on real estate, but local taxation of real estate furnishes the greater part of the revenue necessary for the small governmental unit, as counties, townships, boroughs, and local school, road, and poor districts. Coal in place in the ground, whether or not title thereto has been severed from ownership of the surface, is assessed as real estate and on its supposed sale or market value. There are eight classes of counties in Pennsylvania, based on population; in populous counties of the first, second and third class, assessments are made by a county board appointed by the county commissioners and are fairly uniform throughout the county. In counties of the fourth to the eighth classes inclusive, property assessments are made by property assessors elected by and for each township within a county. In these counties the board of county commissioners acts as a board of equalization and review to hear appeals. In most counties, therefore, where there is a large unmined reserve of coal, assessments on that coal vary for each township, irrespective of the fact that the coal bed is continuous under many townships.

Use of coal thermal dryers has steadily increased since 1928 when one of the predecessor companies of the present Consolidation Coal Cu. constructed a complete preparation plant with thermal dryers. Today there are about 25 additional preparation plants that, all together, use over 65 individual thermal dryers of almost every type. The thermal dryer is a heat generator and the unit may have a separate furnace or a firebox that is an integral part of the dryer. It is also a materials handling device that allows an intimate mixture of wet coal and hot gases with instrumentation for temperature control and. in some cases, the more difficult flow rate of hot gases. The materials handling portion of the dryer is subject to the normal wear and teal of any similar device plus effects of heat, water vapor, moisture: and, sometimes, acid. With present emphasis on air pollution. most fine coal dryers have wet scrubbers.

Feeding dry sulfide concentrate into smelting furnaces enhances process performance and reduces the energy consumption and exhaust gas flow. Direct heated rotary dryers and flash dryers have being replaced by rotary steam dryers featured by very low wear rate of the pipe heating elements and long maintenance interval. Impact of the drying processes on the environment receives more and more attention as the emission legislation tightens. In this regard, environmental factors such as SO2, CO2, dust and gas flow among rotary dryers, flash dryers and steam dryers were compared. Selection of a rotary steam dryer for copper and nickel concentrate drying would be an ideal solution to reduce the pollution of exhaust gas, as drying is achieved by indirect contact to the steam at relatively low drying temperature and as the off-gas contains almost only water vapor and air. The emissions can be significantly reduced and only small and simple off-gas handling units are needed.

The Sensor Based-Sorting technology is an emerging technology applied in mineral separation and concentration. The technique consists in using a method known as Dual Energy X-ray Transmission sorting (DE-XRT). The particle's position over the conveyor belt was evaluated and, despite de variability of results, shows that there is no a position with greater accuracy on the sensor's reading. Results obtained indicated that DE-XRT sorting technology was able to significantly reduce the mass and the ash content of the ore feed, being an interesting option for reduction of costs and improvement of coal quality in beneficiation plants.

The Sullivan Concentrator treats a complex sulphide ore consisting mainly of galena, marmatite and pyrrhotite. The ore carried minor values in silver, antimony, bismuth, indium and tin. The products of the concentrator are lead, zinc, iron and tin concentrates. The minor metal values other than tin are recovered from the concentrates by the refining processes in the smelter at Trail.The concentrator was completed in 1923 and first operated with a capacity of 2,500 tons per day. In the years 1926 to 1929 changes to equipment and buildings brought the operation up to 5,500 tons per day and then, in the years 1935 to 1945, the daily tonnage was raised to 8,500 tons. After 1945, the rising insoluble content of the ore made it necessary to consider the construction of a Sink-Float plant. At this time consideration was also given to the construction of a new crushing plant underground to replace the rolls crushers and cone crushers located at the concentrator. By 1949, construction of the Sink-Float plant was completed along with a new underground crushing plant, and an electric haulage way between the underground crushing chamber and the Sink-Float plant. The ore was hauled in forty 14-ton car trains which discharged into a 3,000 ton receiving bin by means of an air operated five car rotary dumper. With the start up of the,Sink-Float plant, a 1 ½ ft. by 12 ft. Hardinge rod mill was also brought into operation. The Sink-Float plant made it possible to treat 12,000 tons/day of mine run ore with up to 40% of this being rejected as float.

"As a part of the FUME research programme being done by the Norwegian Ferroalloy Research Association (FFF), the SINTEF Group and NTNU, several measurements towards quantifying the gaseous and solid emissions from the draining of the silicon furnaces for metal have been carried out.Based on the measured size distribution of the formed fume particles and known particle growth theory, an estimate of the growth time for the given particles has been calculated. The formation time for the measured NO amount has also been calculated based on the fume measurements and a thermodynamic model of the furnace gases combusting with air. The two “formation” times are in the same order of magnitude and they are therefore used as parameters in a CFD model, modelling that the formed fume particles are heating up the surrounding air and thereby forming NO according to the Zeldovich mechanism. The measurements show an approximately equal constant NO formation per fume particle. The CFD model shows results in the same order of magnitude, supporting that the particle growth and NO formation happen under near stoichiometric conditions and are controlled by the formation of SiO2 fume.IntroductionNOx is the common notion for the two gases nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) formed during combustion of fuels. The EU Directive 2000/53/EC on end-of life vehicles (ELVs) states that in 2015 at least 85 wt.-% of a vehicle has to be reused or recycled. This result in the obligatory need to separate additionally metallic and other components of the automotive shredder residues (ASR), so that they can be professionally prepared for recycling and reuse further. Currently the iron-containing fines of ASR are deposited as it is not possible to process in blast furnaces due to its particle size (< 4 mm), composition and material properties. Additionally problems are also caused in handling and transportation (dust) of the material. This work focuses mainly on the ASR materials utilization in blast furnaces. Material was further separated into two consecutive fractions by carrying out repeated crushing and magnetic separation twice. The two fractions have significantly higher iron content (up to 75 wt.-%) compared to the initial material mixture. The materials were assessed for their usage in blast furnaces based on the possible pelletisation with and without binders, stability of pellets, shape and size of pellets, etc. Pelletisation of the material was carried out with a single mould pellet press. Further lignite coal was added to the mixture as additive which improved the pelletisation behavior and the mechanical stability of pellets. Lignite coal was chosen as a reducing agent in the blast furnace process contributing towards additional savings in energy supplied. The experiments reveal that the production of pellets from iron-containing fines is possible with a lignite coal admixture of about 15 wt.-%. These pellets displayed good mechanical stability and can be used in blast furnace processes in recovery of the recyclable metals which are currently not recycled. The recycling of not yet recyclable metals would reduce the deposition and can be easily adopted into the economic cycle by their utilization.
