"This paper gives a brief resume of the changes in the market picture for Western coal since 1948. It then analyzes present markets and recent developments in Western Canada, the western United States and Japan, and forecasts future markets in these areas to 1975.INTRODUCTIONCOAL HAS BEEN MUCH IN THE NEWS OF LATE, both in the United States and in Canada. In the United States, this is because of the booming condition of the industry and because of the purchase of control of a number of America's largest coal producers by the integrated oil and metal producing companies seeking additional fossil fuel reserves and diversification. In this regard, it is interesting to note that ownership of America's largest strip coal producer was recently acquired by one of the world's largest copper mining companies. In Canada, the conclusion of several large-scale, long-term contracts for the sale of coal to the Japan Steel Group and the projected use of Canadian coal in steel mills in the western United States has focused much attention on the coal industry."

IN 1923 Desch¹ pointed out that the grains in a metal which is anisotropic with respect to its thermal coefficient of expansion would contract differently upon cooling, and that the stresses developed might approximate the plastic strength of the metal. More recently Boas and Honeycombe2-5 studied the behavior of several metals upon thermal cycling and observed that the stresses developed in arlisotropic metals are great enough to produce slip lines in individual grains and a roughening of the specimen surface. This phenomenon they have named "thermal fatigue." The mechanism they propose involves essentially a kneading of the grains, the deformation being alternately in compression and tension in a given grain as the temperature is changed in one direction and then the other. The present work was undertaken to investigate the possibility that an additional mechanism might operate to produce plastic deformation during thermal cycling—a "thermal ratchet" that depends upon a combination of grain boundary flow to relax the stress that develops between differently oriented grains upon raising the temperature and transcrys-talline slip to relax the oppositely directed stress which develops on lowering the temperature. Thus, thermal cycling should produce a nonreversible distortion such that certain grains will change shape differently from their neighbors with a simultaneous displacement being produced at the grain boundary. Temperature Dependence of Grain Boundary and Grain Strength The critical resolved stress for the initiation of slip in metal grains is only mildly affected by temperature." For example, in cadmium it decreases from 0.15 to about 0.05 kg per sq mm when the temperature is increased from 20° to 458°K and further temperature increase causes little further decrease. On the other hand, the work of KG1 indicates that the grain boundaries behave in a viscous fashion that can be described8 by the expression: t = BVexp(Q/RT) [1] t is the shearing stress on the boundary; B, a constant; V, the flow rate at the boundary; Q, the activation energy for grain boundary flow; R, the gas law's constant; and T, the absolute temperature. Eq 1 indicates that the stress necessary to cause a given grain boundary flow rate, V, decreases rapidly with increasing temperature. The value of the constant B is such that at sufficiently low temperature and ordinary strain rates deformation will occur preferentially by slip rather than by grain boundary flow. There is considerable evidence to indicate Consider the bicrystal shown in Fig. 1. In grain 1 the slip plane lies 45 " to the boundary while in grain 2 the slip plane is 90" to the boundary. The coefficients of expansion of the grains in a direction parallel to the length of the crystal are a1 and a, with a, > a2 for the orientations shown. The sequence of events that can occur upon heating and cooling this specimen is illustrated schematically in Fig. 2. Initially there is assumed to be no stress in the specimen (A). Upon heating, grain 1 attempts to become longer than grain 2, but is constrained by grain 2. Thus grain 1 is loaded in compression and grain 2 is loaded in tension, and a shearing stress is present across the boundary (B). As the temperature is increased, the stress will build up, and finally grain 1 will be plastically deformed by slip, since the greater stress is resolved on its slip planes. Any further heating will result in more slip and the stress will remain constant until some temperature T* is reached where the stress can be relaxed by grain boundary flow.† At this relaxation temperature (C) a step will appear between grain 1 and grain 2. Further heating above T* will cause grain 1 to become relatively longer, but no stress will appear because the grain boundary is too weak to support the stress (D). Upon cooling again, at T* (E), the grain boundary will again be able to support a shearing stress, and upon cooling further, grain 1 will be loaded in tension and grain 2 in compression (F). When the decrease in temperature below T* is sufficient to impose the critical shear stress upon the slip plane of grain 1, it will be stretched by slip.

Recent, detailed mapping, (Allibone, 1986; Peden, in prep.) of north west Stewart Island, has shown that the Rakeahua Granite (Watters et al, 1968), is comprised of a wide range of granitoid bodies ranging from diorite to leucogranite. As a result of the wide variation in granitoids Allibone (1986), suggests renaming of the Rakeahua Granite to the Rakeahua Granitoid Complex. Names were also proposed for the individual granitoid bodies mapped.

The Burnaby Mountain Tunnel was an integral part of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. General Contractor, Kiewit Ledcor TMEP Partnership (KLTP), contracted with McNally Construction to build an underground tunnel between the Burnaby and Westridge Marine terminals under Burnaby Mountain. The pipeline was constructed within a 2.6-kilometre tunnel, eliminating the need to run the pipeline over the mountain and minimizing community impacts. The complexities of this Project led to multiple innovations, including the design of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) capable of excavating through mixed-faced conditions concurrently thus allowing the Project team to complete the tunnel with limited geotechnical information.

"This report presents the results of investigations of ore-testing projects assigned to the Ore-Dressing Section, Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines, at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station, Rolla Mo. During the fiscal year ended June 30, 1941.The manner of approving ore-testing projects has been explained in a previous reports. 4/ The testing procedures likewise have been described. 5/The treatment methods described are based upon laboratory experiments with small amounts of sample and naturally are subject to the inherent, normal, limiting conditions of such procedure. It is not intended to describe treatments in detail, but rather to indicate applicable methods. Local operating conditions, when the laboratory results are applied to plant operations, may require further study. Large-scale pilot-plant tests should be made before commercial operations are begun, so that translation from the experimental stage will yield satisfactory results."

An estimation geologist has many tools in their kit and using the correct one for the job is vital for creating a useful model. Reconciliation is a key step to monitor the performance of a resource model and to ensure the correct tools have been selected and appropriate parameters are set. This paper presents an example of refining the estimation methodology for a Channel Iron Deposit (CID), resulting in an improved model. Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) CIDs are unique iron ore deposits located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and contribute a significant volume to the world’s seaborne iron ore market. A problematic feature of these deposits is the irregular dispersion of clay pods that cannot be delineated with confidence within the resolution of the exploration drilling. Resource to grade control reconciliation showed an over-prediction of high-grade material in the resource model. A fresh approach was required to improve grade and tonnage predictions. Historically, clay pods were delineated using traditional wireframing techniques and estimated using ordinary kriging with hard boundaries. The new method utilised indicator kriging to estimate the probability of clay. Probabilities generated from the indicator kriging estimate were used as an additional weighting following the ordinary kriging of grades. Results showed indicator kriging improved global high-grade tonnes reconciliation, however, as expected, it did not improve the spatial prediction of clay. Based on improved reconciliation results indicator kriging has now been adopted as a suitable alternative for analogous CIDs at RTIO. These improvements benefit the mine planning process, but do not replace grade control models.

MAGMA COPPER COMPANY San Manuel Division The San Manuel Division of Magma Copper Company is located about 40 miles north of Tucson. Tons of ore milled in 1973 .were approximately 19 million at a rate of 63,000 tons per day. From this, about 42,600 tons of copper concentrate was produced as saying approximately 1.070 MoS2 and 28.5% Cu. As with many copper ores, the San Manuel ore contains a small amount of gold, but in this particular case, much of the gold follows the molybdenite. Separation of the molybdenite from the bulk sulfide concentrate by flotation produces a moly concentrate containing 9170 MoS2, just under 1.070 Cu, and 0.44 oz Au per ton. Cyanidation of this material for gold recovery is the only practice of its kind known to the authors of this Monograph. After thickening, the final moly concentrate is filtered for subsequent repulping with cyanide and lime. Gold dissolution takes place in three agitators in series with the pulp from the agitators being filtered in two stages in disc filters. Between filtration stages, the cake is repulped with barren solution. Filtrate from both filters is the pregnant solution. The Merrill-Crowe recovery unit is comprised of two solution tanks and the usual clarifying filter, vacuum tower, zinc dust feeder and Merrill precipitate press. Because of the presence of finely divided sooty chalcocite in the molybdenum concentrate, the cyanide consumption of 55 pounds per ton is extremely high. A compensating factor, however, is the low copper, moly concentrate produced. Precipitation of the gold from the highly copper-contaminated solution requires 0.56 pounds of zinc dust and 0.28 pounds of lead acetate per ton, high figures when compared to normal cyanidation practice. The Merrill- Crowe precipitate assays approximately 28.5% Cu, 8% Zn, 156 oz Au and 197 oz Ag per ton. The San Manuel cyanidation plant is an outstanding and innovative development.

Owing to its isolation and comparatively small tonnage, the Yoquivo district is not widely known; though financially important and, geologically, quite interesting. San Francisco dc Yoquivo, the center of the mining district, is in the western part of the state of Chihuahua, Mexico; about 35 miles west of. San Juanito, on the Kansas City, Mexico & Orient R. R. The town can be reached from the railroad by a good trail over a rugged country. The elevation of Yoquivo is 6500 ft., and peaks surrounding the town are 2000 ft. higher. The mining towns of Concheno and Ocampo are 25 miles northwest, and Uruachic is 20 miles southwest. The climate, temperate and healthful, is almost ideal. The rainy season begins in July and ends the latter part of September. There is usually, though not always, some precipitation in all months except April, May, and June: The mountains are covered with pine and scrub oak. Water, wood and lumber are plentiful for all ordinary purposes, and hydroelectric power is available for. about six months of the year, when wood for steam, power is utilized as an expedient. The district has been worked: recurrently for over 60 years. The Yoquivo province lies on the steep western-slope of the Tara-humara division of the Sierra Madre range of mountains. The province is traversed by many deep canyons, most of which flow west. The town is situated on the San Francisco arroyo, which makes a confluence with the Huevachic stream 212 m. southwest; the Huevachic in turn joins the Candemeña river farther down and these two drain the western flank of the Tarahumara mountains and form the headwaters of the Mayo river. The claims of the Yoquivo Development Co., which, is the only organization in the district with a record of any considerable production,: lie within an area roughly 112 m. square. The area extends from the, San Francisco arroyo north, and from the Dolores arroyo west, and is confined to the andesitc formation.

"FOREWORDFerrograde manganese ore or its equivalent is essential to the manufacture of every ton of steel produced; although it is well known that there are large deposits of low-grade are in the United States, the production of substantial amounts of ferrograde material from domestic sources presents a problem that becomes more and more critical as the stockpiled ore depleted through inability to procure adequate supplies from foreign sources. Consequently, a program of laboratory,and pilot-plant investigation designed to solve the problem of obtaining a domestic supply of manganese has been undertaken by the Metallurgical Division, Bureau of Mines.This paper is one of a new series that include reports of results obtained in the various investigations conducted under the manganese program. The scope of the program and the organization that was set up to direct and supervise the were discussed in the foreword of the first paper of this series, Report of Investigations 3606 Manganese Investigations. 1. "Electron microbeam analysis of metallurgical samples covers a broad field and has applications in the areas of minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, physical metallurgy and corrosion.Some idea of the possibilities of microbeam techniques can be illustrated by examining the following example of a run of mine gold ore sample. Milling and bulk chemical analysis of the ore will provide major and minor element analysis as well as the gold grade. More detailed chemistlY can also reveal the presence of trace elements that may be advantageous or deleterious to downstream processing. Electron microbeam analysis can provide additional information in the form of - size, liberation, association and composition of the gold, the percentage of refractory gold, the size, liberation, association and composition of enclosing sulphide or arsenide phases and the levels and association of the trace elements that may affect processing. In most cases electron microbeam analysis compliments bulk chemistry, and does not replace it. Both techniques should be used in parallel for maximum effect.This paper touches on the origin and history of electron microbeam techniques, as well as the theory behind microbeam analysis and processing. The more common types of instruments and their applications will also be dealt with briefly - more details on, and examples of, the applications and choice of technique will be covered in the presentation.Mosely first discovered, in 1913, that the frequency of emitted X-radiation excited by an electron beam is a function of the atomic number of the analysed element. This discovery led to the development of spectrochemical analysis. The forerunners of the electron microanalysers of today, however, were only invented during the nineteen fifties. The electron microprobe was developed in parallel by Castaing and Guinier in France and by Borovski in Russia, but Castaing's design was the basis of modern microanalysers. The initial area of analysis was brought down from over 1 mm2 to less than 2 µm, as it is today. In 1956 Cosslett and Duncumb invented the scanning electron microprobe, where a beam of electrons could be scanned across an area of a sample. This, in turn, led to the development of the electron microprobe with both scanning and point analysis capabilities that we know today.Essentially, all electron microbeam instruments operate by the production of a beam of electrons from a filament in a vacuum (i.e. an electron gun). The electron beam leaves the gun and is accelerated and focused by a series of electromagnetic lenses while passing down an evacuated column. The electrons eventually strike the surface of the sample to be analysed and may travel through a thin sample (transmitted electron microscopy) or react with a thicker sample to produce several reflected kinds of radiation."

Previous publications on the application of EIETSIM include the modelling of an electrolytic zinc plant and a copper flash smelter. In the present case METSIM has been used to model the desilverising of lead by the reagent zinc, whereby a silver-zinc intermetallic compound is formed, and floats out of the lead. This compound has a variable composition, depending upon the ratio of dissolved zinc/silver in the lead bath. Its solubility in lead decreases with falling temperature. A number of variations and modifications of the Davey Desilverising Procedure are modelled, and applied to a wide range of silver contents in lead bullions at several plants. METSIM uses both feed- back and feed-forward controls to simulate plant conditions, and a logic control to distinguish between different phases in the Zn-Ag system. Use is made of extensive (previously unpublished) fundamental data on the ternary Pb-Ag-Zn system, and of plant data, to establish certain operating parameters.

The Bureau of Mines investigated molten salt electrorefining 'n helium atmosphere cells as a means for the production of ductile vanadium. 'Electrolytes composed of NaCl-VCl2, LiCl-NaCl-VCl2, BaCl2-KCl-NaCl-VCl2 KCl-LiCl-VCl2, and CaCl2-NaCl-VCl2 were tested. Two electrolytes, KCl-LiCl-VCl2 and CaCl2-NaCl-VC12, were selected for laboratory-scale production tests. A molten salt electrorefining process was developed for the production of ductile 99.6 percent vanadium from a commercial 90-percent grade. Using the CaCl2-NaCl-VC12 electrolyte, an 87-percent recovery of ductile vanadium was made; an 85-percent recovery was made with the KCl-LiCl-VCl2 electrolyte.

When it comes to structuring major mining contracts, the two most widely adopted formats are æmeasure and valueÆ and æcost-plusÆ. A problem with both of these formats is the difficultly of aligning the objectives of the mining company with those of the contractor to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. An alternative contractual arrangement is for the mining company to enter into an Alliance arrangement with the contractor, linking remuneration to mine performance across a range of targets. These targets can change over time as operational requirements change.   The aims of this paper are to: +        outline alternative types of mining contracts, as well as their strengths and pitfalls; +        describe the philosophy behind the Alliance contract at Newmont Waihi GoldÆs Favona underground mine; and +        identify some of the keys to success and pitfalls to avoid when implementing an Alliance.

"The Sarcheshmeh mine processes 40,000 t/d of ore grading 0.9% Cu and 0.035% Mo. Grinding is effected in single stage ball mills using 80 mm forged steel balls, with an average consumption of 850 g/t. One of its 5 m diameter, 8 m length ball mills was emptied to measure the ball size distribution. The broken balls were first separated from the total charge, and the remaining balls classified into five size intervals of +7O mm, -70 +60 mm, -60+50 mm, -50+40 mm, -40 mm.The charge was composed of 280,534 balls (excluding broken balls) with a total mass of 305,180 kg. It was found that 4.0 % of the balls were broken; the size distribution of the charge was also markedly different from the desired one, in particular for the small-sized balls. For instance, 9% of the balls were expected to measure 2.54 to 3.18 cm in diameter, but none was found. On the other hand, the amount of top size balls was 30% higher than expected. The radial hardness of balls, which was determined by cutting the balls in halves, showed that the hardness sharply drops when the balls become smaller than 65 mm. The unexpected ball size distribution was attributed to the rapid change in the balls radial hardness. Based on the measured ball size distribution, a new ball make-up charge which uses 80% of 80 mm and 20% of 60 mm balls instead of 100% of 80 mm was proposed and implemented. The effect of the new ball make-up procedure in terms of ball consumption and grinding efficiency is being investigated."

The Waihi underground mining operation currently mines epithermal veins ranging from two metres up to ten metres in width using a ‘Modified Avoca’ stoping method. This method consists of longhole bench stope mining at 15m to 18m sublevel spacing. The bulk of production drilling and blasting is top down with the extraction length of a typical stope panel nominally being 18m to 20m along strike. A stope panel is usually taken in two blasting cycles followed by the remote bogging of the stope ore. The panel is backfilled in-cycle using unconsolidated waste rock material which is tipped into the void from the upper level using a Caterpillar R2900 or R1700 sized underground loader. The underground mine first commenced production in 2008 and up until 2016, as was typical of many open stope mining operations at the time, an underground loader was used to place a waste rock bund at the top brow of the open stope. This rock bund was the principal means of protecting people and equipment from this hazard. In 2016 there was a fatality at the mine when a loader that had been tasked with building this rock bund fell into the stope void. Immediately post incident all mining and processing operations were suspended for a week to allow colleagues to grieve, to observe cultural protocols and to begin the investigation into this event. During this period senior operators, supervisory and technical staff developed an innovative system which used steel bollards to protect this open edge. With development over the following months this bollard system has eliminated this hazard from the Waihi underground mine.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed batch equilibrium contact experiments to examine the ability of activated coconut-shell carbon to adsorb various metal cyanide complexes. Tests were also conducted to determine the effect these cyanide complex impurities might have on the adsorption of gold by the activated carbon. Metal cyanide species included in the investigation were antimony, arsenic, cadmium, calcium, cobalt, gold, iron, mercury, nickel, silver, thallium, and zinc. Tests were made over a pH range of 6.4 to 12.5. The carbon exhibited a preference for gold adsorption over other metals present in solution. In the absence of gold, the metal cyanide complexes were adsorbed; adsorption generally decreased with increasing pH. However, calcium and thallium adsorptions increased with increasing pH, while arsenic and iron were not adsorbed at any pH.

Conventionally, lithium-bearing brines are processed via solar evaporation, chemical purification, and either electrolysis to lithium hydroxide or precipitation of lithium carbonate. Lithium-ion battery technology and electric vehicles are forecast to greatly increase the demand for lithium, but not all lithium-bearing brines are amenable to the conventional extraction process and new approaches are being developed. The chemistry associated with conventional lithium extraction is outlined and two new approaches are discussed.

In 1910 the author was engaged in a qualitative study of the radioactivity of several chemical substances and a few minerals. In the course of the work he studied the mineral allanite (obtained from granite ledges at Topsham, Maine), and found it to be appreciably radio-active. Recently the fact was brought to his attention that the radio-activity of allanite is not well known, although Hon. R. J. Strutt in 1905 published a list of radio-active minerals with their analyses, including allanite from Amherst County, Virginia.' In the work done, a standard type of electroscope was used, and the readings were made with a telescope, fitted with a scale, by means of which the rate of discharge could be readily determined. The natural "leak" of the instrument was carefully determined, and all results corrected accordingly. The method of study was as follows: The material to be tested was finely powdered, and spread over the bottom of a small, inactive pan. The electroscope was then charged, and the pan placed in position. The door of the instrument was closed, and the rate of discharge carefully determined. All results were reduced to common form to permit of comparison. It is to be noted that the materials tested were not used in strictly comparable quantities, such as if 1 g. of each had been used, but about the same quantity of powder was used (in the cases of the solid substances), so that the results are qualitatively accurate. "Compagnie Miniere Esperance operates a gold primary ore body. The ore is processed through crushing, grinding and gravity concentration generating tailings with remaining fine gold. Analyses of the tailings proved a residual gold grade sufficient for a chemical treatment.As lab tests proved the technical feasibility of a pre-concentration using flotation, an on-site pilot operation has been carried out to assess the continuous circuit performances, define the best configuration and obtain enough data for the industrial circuit sizing.Data collected during the pilot campaign have been used for calibrating a process simulator built with the USIM™ PAC software. The simulator validated the feasibility of upgrading the existing plant, including the reprocessing of tailings to obtain a good fine gold recovery in a small amount of concentrate. A preliminary capital cost has been achieved to assess the flotation workshop profitability.INTRODUCTIONCompagnie Miniere Esperance (CME), a mining company based in French Guyana, operates a gold primary ore body in open pit. The ore is processed through crushing, grinding and gravity separation in two stages: a top plant and a bottom plant. A “coarse” pond contains tailings of the top plant; this product feeds the bottom plant. Tailings of the bottom plant are stored in the “fine” pond.Analyses of the fine ponds proved a residual gold grade sufficient for a chemical treatment. However, direct cyanidation would require a too large installation, regarding the local conditions (accessibility, supplying and meteorological conditions).It has been then decided to test the feasibility of a pre-concentration using flotation. Lab tests have been carried out by SGS Lakefield (Canada) in March 2007, which proves the technical feasibility."

In this study, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller based on an improved disturbance observer is designed for control of the ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill grinding circuit has vast applications in the mining, metallurgy, chemistry, pharmacy, and research laboratories; however, this system has some challenges. The grinding circuit is a multivariable system in which the high interaction between loops, the variation of the system parameters with time, and time delay are some of the problems that pose a challenge. Since the controller parameters are determined offline in classic PID control, these gains are unchangeable and cannot overcome the mentioned challenges in this system. Hence, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller, which is a combination of fuzzy logic and a conventional PID controller, is proposed to control the grinding system, especially in the presence of model mismatch and disturbances. In addition, in order to solve the system challenges, a multivariable control approach based on an improved disturbance observer is proposed to suppress the effects of the disturbances. The most important feature of the algorithm proposed in this paper as the combination of fuzzy logic self-tuning PID and improved disturbance observer is its ability to eliminate system interaction, attenuate internal and external disturbances, and compensate the effect of system uncertainty on the performance of the ball mill grinding circuit. Simulation results in the cases of the set-point change in particle size and circulating load in the presence of model mismatch and external disturbances confirmed the controller performance compared to other controllers.
