"In many mineral processing applications it is necessary to know the isoelectric points of the various minerals in the ore to properly perform flotation and other mineral separations. However, current zeta potential analysis technology used to determine the isoelectric point of a particle suspension cannot deliver the isoelectric point of each individual mineral, just an average of the mineral system. Traditionally, individual isoelectric points have been gathered by testing pure, synthetic minerals. These values can vary widely depending on the mineral synthesis procedure and the water quality used during the isoelectric point analysis. A more robust approach for determining the actual isoelectric point of a particular mineral in a mixture of minerals is needed. This paper details a method for determining the isoelectric point of an iron oxide mineral in a siliceous iron ore. The method uses a laser scattering particle size analyzer and a pH electrode to determine the pH at which the liberated mineral particles begin to flocculate as pH is decreased. The pH at which the average particle size rises dramatically is the isoelectric point of the mineral with the highest isoelectric point in the ore. This measurement technique was used on natural hematite, goethite and siderite ores as well as a synthetic mixture of pure silica and pure hematite. The results for synthetic hematite mixtures were comparable to literature values.IntroductionRecently there has been an increased interest in the processing of low-grade iron ores (Bolen, 2014; Carlson and Kawatra, 2008, 2011, 2013; Halt et al., 2014; Halt and Kawatra, 2014; Haselhuhn 2012, 2013; Haselhuhn et al., 2012a, 2012b; Kawatra and Halt, 2011; Liu et al., 2014; Manouchehri, 2014; Sandvik and Larsen, 2014; Semberg et al., 2014). The zeta potential of iron ore minerals is a very important and often overlooked aspect of iron ore mineral processing. Zeta potential is the charge at the shear plane of a surface in an aqueous environment (Carlson and Kawatra, 2013). Many ores consist of a variety of minerals differing in zeta potential. This property of a particle surface in water is responsible for either keeping the particles dispersed from each other or flocculated to each other. This is important during many operations such as flotation, desliming and thickening. Zeta potential is primarily a function of the pH of the water and the mineralogy of the particles, though certain ions within the water can also have a significant impact (Haselhuhn, 2012). Consider the following situation: silica (SiO2) particles and hematite (Fe2O3) particles are suspended in an aqueous solution. These two types of minerals have drastically different zeta potentials throughout the pH spectrum (Esumi et al., 1988). In alkaline conditions, both types of particles exhibit negative zeta potentials and will tend to disperse from each other. In acidic conditions (between pH of 3 and 6), silica has a negative zeta potential while hematite has a positive zeta potential, so these surfaces will tend to be attractive to each other and the particles will flocculate and settle. This phenomenon is visually described in Fig. 1. The pH at which the two minerals begin to attract to each other, or destabilize, is near hematite’s isoelectric point. The isoelectric point is defined as the pH at which the surface has a net zero zeta potential (Carlson and Kawatra, 2013)."

"In 2015, the estimated value of nonfuel mineral production in the United States decreased by 3 percent from that in 2014 (Table 1), mainly as a result of decreased metal and metallic mineral prices, especially iron ore, copper and precious metals. Lower metal prices were attributed to decreased consumption, especially in China and increased global inventories. Several U.S. metal mines were idled in 2015, including the only U.S. rare earths mine at Mountain Pass, CA. Downstream processors also were affected, with smelters and refiners either shutting down or idling production lines. Increases, however, took place in the value and quantity of production of industrial minerals, especially those used in the construction sector, including cement, construction sand and gravel and crushed stone. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy, except for iron and steel manufacturing, aluminum manufacturing, coal mining and metals mining, all experienced growth (Table 2).Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. Tonnages of construction aggregates are orders of magnitude larger than those for most other mineral commodities thus making direct comparisons based on weight meaningless (Fig. 1).Mineral industry performanceThe estimated value of domestic nonfuel mineral production, including metals ($26.6 billion) and industrial minerals ($51.7 billion), in 2015 declined to a total of $78.3 billion, from $80.8 billion in 2014 (Table 1). However, as shown in Fig. 2, minerals remained fundamental to the United States economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Net exports of mineral raw materials and old scrap were $14.4 billion. Domestic raw materials, along with domestically recycled materials, were used to produce mineral materials worth $630 billion. These mineral materials, including aluminum, brick, copper, fertilizers and steel, and net imports of processed materials (worth about $32 billion) were, in turn, consumed by downstream industries with a value added to the gross domestic product estimated to be $2,490 billion."

Titanium is the ninth most common element in the Earth's crust, yet only in this century has titanium come into use as an engineering material, particularly in aircraft structures, as the metal, and in pigments, as the dioxide. In this presentation, the metallurgical aspects of processing titanium-containing raw materials will be reviewed. Particular emphasis will be given to the ores and beneficiation techniques which lead to the production of titanium dioxide pigment, which accounts for over 90% of world titanium production.

An accepted statement of fact is that, next to agriculture, transportation is the second most important industry in the world. The transportation networks of the United States have greatly contributed to our nation's growth and prosperity. The objective here is to make the reader aware of the need for communication between geologists, mining engineers, purchasing agents, and transportation managers. Only through a cooperative effort is it possible to reap the benefits of transportation in the industrial minerals field. Transportation is often thought of in terms of trucks, rail cars, barges, and covered wagons. There is much more. Corning Inc. Corning Glass Works is a worldwide organization with more than $2 billion in annual sales. It supplies more than 60,000 different products a year to some 47,000 customer firms and millions of individual consumers. Corning operates 32 of its own plants worldwide and is also an investor with a 50-50 or minority position in 24 affiliated companies in 11 countries. Corning competes in four broad business categories: • specialty glass and ceramics; • consumer housewares; • laboratory sciences; and • telecommunications Binding these four sectors together is the glue of technology. Coming's research laboratory, established in 1908, was one of the first in American industry. That early commitment to research has never wavered. Today, Corning spends annually on research and devel¬opment, as a percentage of sales, at double the average rate for all manufacturing industry in the US. Some 1500 scientists, engineers, and support personnel are now employed at the company's research and development centers in the US, Japan, and France. Petalite background A family of materials melted conventionally as a glass, then converted by special processing to a ceramic was invented in 1957. One of the basic minerals in this glass ceramic product is petalite. Petalite is a monoclinic mineral with a framework silicate structure and a low iron content, about 0.06% Fe2O3. Petalite is found in very few places throughout the world and no commercial petalite deposit has been found in the United States. Sizable deposits occur in Zimbabwe, Southwest Africa, Brazil, Australia, the Soviet Union, and Sweden. Coming's purchasing and geology departments located a source of petalite with proven reserves in what was then known as Rhodesia. The supplier was Bikita Minerals. The relationship with Bikita was one in which Bikita supplied bulk ore that Corning processed into a finished material at its US facility. This bulk ore method of shipment resulted in high losses through contamination and processing. It also caused tank upsets at the Corning plant because of iron contamination picked up through the numerous handlings of this product in bulk. The relationship with Bikita continued until 1965 when the white political leadership of Rhodesia declared its independence from Great Britain. This led to the imposition of international sanctions. The sanctions were lifted in 1980 and the relationship with Bikita was reestablished in 1983.

Raise boring of mine ventilation shafts in many cases offers a lower cost and higher speed method of construction in comparison to conventional shaft sinking. Where underground access is available for raise boring the potential savings indicate that raise boring should be considered as an alternative to other methods. Raise boring machines are currently in use which have the capability for reaming shafts up to twenty feet in diameter, depending on the strata and depth. These large capacity machines make it possible to consider raise bored shafts for moving large volumes of air. Although we will consider here only ventilation shafts, raise boring should also be considered for men and material shafts. When the mine planner has determined the volume of air required through a shaft at a particular location he is faced with the problem of selecting the shaft size. The principal factors in optimizing the shaft size are the construction costs for the shaft 'and the power cost to move the air through the shaft. The larger diameter the' shaft is the more it costs to construct, but for a given volume of air the power required (cost) becomes lower as the diameter increases. The construction cost is paid only once, when the shaft is constructed. The power costs, however, are paid throughout the life of the shaft. Methods of optimizing air shaft size found in the literature (References 1 and 2) amortize the construction cost and include it in the average annual cost of operating the airshaft. These methods derive a formula for the average annual cost vs. shaft size and de-rive the formula to compute the optimum size for a given air flow rate. O aço inoxidável duplex (AID) representa uma classe importante de aços inoxidáveis, particularmente para aplicações que exigem alta resistência mecânica e à corrosão. Sendo assim, o estudo das propriedades eletroquímicas dos filmes passivos formados em AID tem sido uma contribuição importante para a compreensão do comportamento protetor contra a corrosão. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar o filme passivo formado no aço 2205 laminado a morno utilizando espectroscopia de impedância eletroquímica, (EIE), em ambiente de íons de cloreto. Para esse propósito, as chapas como fornecidas de AID foram laminadas a morno a 600°C até 60% e 80% de redução na espessura e submetidas aos testes eletroquímicos. O estudo mostra que o tratamento termomecânico utilizado não favoreceu a formação do filme passivo nessas condições e levou a uma menor resistência à polarização. O AID 2205 como fornecido apresentou uma maior resistência à transferência de carga na comparação com as amostras laminadas a morno.

O aço inoxidável duplex (AID) vem sendo considerado uma excelente alternativa para aplicações que requerem alta resistência à corrosão e alta resistência mecânica. Portanto, a microestrutura e as propriedades dos aços dúplex permanecem como temas de grande interesse. Para este proposito, estudou-se o efeito da laminação a morno em um aço inoxidável duplex. O foco deste trabalho foi o AID 2205 que é um dos tipos mais comuns de AID. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar o comportamento eletroquímico do AID 2205 laminado a morno no ambiente de íons de cloretos utilizando medidas de polarização potenciodinâmica. O aço inoxidável dúplex foi laminado a morno à 600°C para 60 e 80% de redução na espessura e submetido a testes eletroquímicos. As amostras apresentaram uma excelente resistência à corrosão em solução de NaCl 3,5%. Apesar da existência de certa similaridade entre os valores de potencial de circuito aberto e potenciais de pites obtidos para todas as amostras, o número de pites observado foi maior na amostra CF, seguida pelas amostras com 60 e 80% de redução.

One of the gravest problems of the iron foundry today is the accumulation of sulfur in commercial scrap and its effect on the castings made therewith. The ordinary jobbing castings today show a sulfur content of 0.18 per cent;, and occasionally as high as 0.22 per cent. The product of the foundry during the war is undoubtedly to blame for this rapid increase and conditions will become worse as the millions of tons of gray-iron castings of the war period return to the foundry in the form of commercial scrap. In the ordinary cupola remelting of pig and scrap, at least 0.02 per cent. sulfur is taken up; often double that amount. The high cost and difficulty of obtaining pig iron during the war period compelled the use of considerable scrap in the mixtures; frequently charges containing 90 per cent. of bought scrap were melted. Naturally the sulfur content of the castings increased. Until the advent of the basic-hearth electric furnace, the only method of holding the sulfur within reasonable limits was to use high percentages of pig in the foundry mixtures. Pig iron seldom contains over 0.05 per cent. sulfur, if well made. With pig iron forming 60 per cent. of the charge and the gates, runners, rejections, and bought scrap the other 40 per cent., the sulfur content of the castings can easily be held down to 0.10 per cent. Pig iron, however, costs more than scrap even when melting loss differences are considered, hence as small a percentage as possible will be used. The recent advance in knowledge of rational melting and the consequent reduction in losses directly due to oxidation of the metal and cold iron, has permitted the acceptance of castings with a much higher sulfur content than formerly. The steel industry also is seeking to determine how high sulfur may go with safety. In the iron foundry, however, there is the danger of a low cupola bed or an unduly retarded air-furnace heat, with the consequent raising of the freezing point of the metal and segregation effects resulting from high sulfur with insufficient manganese. Pvestrained Ferrovac E iron has been neutron-irradiated at approximately 90°C to an integrated flux of 1020 nut (E > 0.82 mev]. The irradiation was found to produce an incveased temperature dependence of the flow stress in addition to a greatly increased athemal stress. Measurements of the flow stress and stress relaxation, from which the activation volume and activation energy for slip were deduced, show that neutron irradiation changes the rate -controlling slip process to one based on dislocation interactions with tetragonal distortions which are Produced around submicroscopic interstitial loops in the lattice. The study indicates that without prestraining prior to irradiation the chances of detecting a change in the rate -controlling slip process are greatly reduced because in the initial stages of slip a substantial fraction of the radiation defects are swept out of the slip plane by gliding dislocations. Thus, activation parameters which are subsequently measured are representative of a greatly reduced defect density and would not differ appreciably from those for unirradi-ated material. The large increase in the athermal component of the flow stress is probably connected with the presence of depleted zones in the lattice which are introduced by irradiation. ALTHOUGH fast neutron-irradiation has not been observed to markedly alter the activation parameters for slip in bcc metals,' small but significant changes do occur. Most experimenters agree that irradiation predominantly increases the athermal component of the yield stress.'-= In addition to this, Laidler and smidt7 have shown that in iron irradiated to 5 X 10" nvt and molybdenum irradiated to 10" nvt, changes occur in the activation volumes for slip. A similar conclusion has been reached by Milasin and Malkin8 for irradiated iron. Work by Ohr et a1.5 shows that for Ferrovac E iron, irradiated to 1.2 X 1016 nvt, small increases in the activation energy for slip also occur. So far these changes in the activation parameters have not been explained on a firm theoretical basis. One important factor which would minimize the chances of detecting a change in the slip mechanism upon irradiation is the presence of "channeling" which has been observed in molybdenum,9 niobium,10 and iron.11These channels are formed by gliding dislocations which sweep irradiation defects out of the active slip planes and thereby create zones in which continued dislocation motion is encouraged. The activation parameters for the dislocations gliding in the defect-free channels would, therefore, be similar to those for unirradiated iron and a change in the rate-controlling slip process would be difficult to detect. In the present work, an attempt has been made to reduce the effect of uneven deformation on the measured activation parameters for slip in neutron-irradiated Ferrovac E iron polycrystals, so that a more realistic assessment of the effects of neutron-irradiation could be made. Primarily, the experiments involve the irradiation of specimens which had been prestrained to 9 pct elongation at room temperature prior to insertion into the reactor. It was hoped that the introduction of a large number of evenly distributed dislocations would substantially decrease any channeling effect which might otherwise occur. MATERIAL AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting material was vacuum-melted Ferrovac E iron, an analysis of which is given in Table I. The standard tensile specimen had a gage length of 1.125 in., a cross-sectional diameter of 0.120 in., and a re-crystallized grain size of 1.2 x 10-3 in. All tensile tests were conducted on a floor model "Instron" tensile machine at a strain rate of 3 x 10-4 per sec. The irradiation of the prestrained specimens was performed in the Brookhaven High Flux Beam Reactor to an integrated flux of 1020 nvt (E > 0.82 mev) at a temperature of about 90°C. All specimens were excap-sulated in high-purity aluminum sheaths which were lightly swaged around the samples to ensure good thermal contact. Subsequent measurements on the irradiated specimens showed that within experimental accuracy the swaging had not deformed them. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 shows the flow stresses for a series of unirradiated control samples. The methane gas emitted from coal samples collected from the conveyor belts dumping into silos was measured by the Bureau of Mines. Approximately 50 pct of the total gas desorbed into a sealed can within 1 week was released during the first 24 hours. No simple correlation between the gassiness of the coal stored and the methane concentration in the silo open space above the coal was found. This was probably because the gassier coals were stored in open-top Silos, which were better ventilated. Although the methane concentration in the open space above the coal pile was less than 1 pct for all 34 silos investigated, a methane measurement in the coal pile showed that high methane concentrations can exist. The methane released in the pile appears to accumulate and not liberate freely into the open space above the coal pile. Probably this gas is released during reclaiming operations, but further research is required to substantiate this claim.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical materials in many leading-edge technology products. However, REE separation outside China has remained a challenge in addressing environmental concerns of current production. The author has worked on a technique employing the emphasised variability in the electrophoretic mobility (μi) of REE for the purpose of REE separation. In continuation of the results presented in IMPC 2016 [1], this contribution summarizes the progress achieved in 2016 and 2017. The major goal was to increase the REEs concentration by a factor of 1000 and to attenuate the consequent drawbacks, specifically joule heating effect. Amphiprotic hydroxylic solvent was selected to replace water, which has a major impact on the complexation mechanism and buffer requirement. Non-aqueous media result in a significant drop in the specific molar conductivity of the electrolyte, whilst μi reduces several times only. Moreover, a quasi-steady state electrophoretic separation in conjunction with temperature gradient focusing is adapted to improve scalability.

The Bureau of Mines has been involved for several years in the development of processes for the recycling of solid wastes. As part of this program, a project was initiated to determine the feasibility of producing secondary pig iron from auto scrap. During the test period, 86,000 pounds of shredded auto scrap, along with petroleum coke and fluxing agents, was charged to a submerged-arc furnace of 1-ton nominal capacity. Eighty-eight thousand pounds of pig iron, with an average carbon content of 3.90 percent and an average copper content of 0.2 percent, was produced at an electrical consumption of 512 kW-hr per net ton. A cost estimate of the process showed that the pig, iron might be produced at a cost of $57 per ton.

In the early 1970s, it became a concern that exposure to the mineral fibers associated taconite ore processed in Silver Bay, Minnesota would cause asbestos-related disease including gastrointestinal cancer. At that time data gaps existed which have now been significantly reduced by further research. To further our understanding of the types of airborne fibers in Silver Bay we undertook a geological survey of their source the Peter Mitchell Pit, and found that there are no primary asbestos minerals at a detectable level. However we identified two non-asbestos types of fibrous minerals in very limited geological locales. Air sampling useful for risk assessment was done to determine the type, concentrations and size distribution of the population of airborne fibers around Silver Bay. Approximately 80% of the airborne fibers have elemental compositions consistent with cummingtonite-grunerite and the remaining 20% have elemental compositions in the tremolite-actinolite series. The mean airborne concentration of both fiber types is less than 0.00014 fibers per milliliter that is within the background level reported by the World Health Organization. We calculate the risk of asbestos-related mesothelioma and lung cancer using a variety of different pessimistic assumptions. (i) that all the non-asbestos fibers are as potent as asbestos fibers used in the EPA-IRIS listing for asbestos; with a calculated risk of asbestos-related cancer for environmental exposure at Silver Bay of 1 excess cancer in 28,500 lifetimes (or 35 excess cancers per 1,000,000 lifetimes) and secondly that taconite associated fibers are as potent as chrysotile the least potent form of asbestos. The calculated risk is less than 0.77 excess cancer case in 1,000,000 lifetimes. Finally, we briefly review the epidemiology studies of grunerite asbestos (amosite) focusing on the exposure conditions associated with increased risk of human mesothelioma. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. It is well-known that the particle breakage mode that occurs in a semi-autogenous mill is significantly different from that which occurs in a ball mill, enough so to warrant very different lab scale breakage tests and scale-up models. This phenomenon, at the plant scale, leads to changing process constraints depending on the particular properties of the ore. For example, hard or coarse ores might bottleneck the SAG/AG mill throughput, while the ball mills might constrain throughput when milling soft or fine ores. Because the power draw of a ball mill is fairly constant compared to that of a SAG/AG mill, periods of SAG/AG mill bottlenecks lead to increased ball mill circuit specific energy consumption and a finer grinding circuit product size, which together constitute a loss of efficiency of the overall process. Because HPGR circuit throughput is less sensitive to changes in ore hardness, this situation is less common or severe in those circuits. Furthermore, the ball mills are somewhat decoupled from the upstream crushing circuits through the use of surge bins, which also helps to mitigate this effect. As a result, ore hardness variability constitutes a significant cost penalty that should be applied to SAG mill/ball mill/pebble crusher SABC circuits when evaluating the relative economics of different grinding circuit configurations. Nevertheless, the issue is by-and-large ignored, because most current HPGR trade-off studies are based on averaged ore hardness parameters. This paper provides an estimate of the magnitude of this penalty for a typical operation by using Monte Carlo simulation methods and plant data from Freeport-McMoRan?s autogenous, semi-autogenous, and HPGR-based comminution circuits. A case study from an in-house 96K t/d sulphide project is presented to illustrate the concept. It was found that by including variability effects, the trade-off NPV of the HPGR circuit over that of the SAG mill circuit increases to $84 million from negative $33 million, effectively reversing the original decision of selecting a SAG mill circuit for the fixed hardness case.

We then studied the electric-field dependency of the selective reflection in BP I* at 20.7 °C by applying increasing and the decreasing pulsed alternating current (a.c.) electric fields (100 Hz).

"Mineralogical characterization and metallurgical extraction of silver is challenging due to its complex mineralogy and chemistry. Over 200 Ag-bearing minerals have been identified and a silver-rich ore body would typically contain 5 to 10 different silver minerals. Silver can occur not only as discrete microscopic (visible) silver minerals but also as submicroscopic (invisible) silver in other minerals. During processing, silver may form passivation compounds such as silver hydroxide, silver sulphide, jarosite-like silver sulphate, silver halide or silver cyanide precipitate, all of which may negatively impact on silver extraction. Knowing the deportment of silver in the ore and its metallurgical products is important in flowsheet design and plant optimization. This paper begins with the classification of silver ores and minerals and a review of processing techniques, and focuses on the major mineralogical factors to explain why and how these factors affect silver extraction. Case studies are provided to demonstrate the application of silver process mineralogy in flowsheet design and plant optimization.INTRODUCTIONSilver was known to and utilized by mankind since ancient time. Actually, it was one of the earliest metals discovered and utilized by mankind after gold and copper.Silver is the whitest metallic element. It is rare, strong, corrosion resistant, and unaffected by moisture, vegetable acids, or alkalis. Silver is also resonant, moldable, malleable, and possesses the highest thermal and electric conductivity of any substance. The chemical symbol for silver is Ag, from the Latin argentum, which means white and shining. Although silver does not react with many chemicals, it does react with sulfur, which is always present in air at trace amounts. The reaction causes silver to tarnish, and consequently it must be polished periodically to retain its luster.Silver possesses many special physical characteristics and qualities that make it useful to a variety of industries. The photography industry is the biggest user of silver compounds. Silver forms the most light-sensitive halide salts, which are essential to developing highquality photographic prints. Silver also has the highest electrical conductivity per unit volume of any metal, including copper, so it is used extensively in electronics."

This report describes a complete system design methodology for medium frequency (MF) wireless radio systems for use in coal mines. The emphasis Is on AC mines where no trolley wire exists and, for which, conventional trolley phone communications can not be used. The report constitutes an MF system design handbook and includes a compendium of all previous MF technology elements as well as a reference index with abstracts of all pertinent literature. A particular strawman system design analysis is included for the Helvetia Coal Co. Lucerne #8 mine in the Upper Freeport seam.
