The proton NMR spectra of 32 pyridines in two solvents, carbon tetrachloride and benzene-d6, are presented. The chemical-shift and differential-shift values are correlated with the substitutent position and with the solvent media. The ring protons and the protons on alkyl substituents are tabulated. The paramagnetic shift of the protons adjacent to the nitrogen is discussed, and a proposed structure for the pyridine-benzene complex that is consistent with the observed anomalous paramagnetic shift is presented. The utility of the data in the identification of pyridine compounds found in shale-oil naphtha is demonstrated.

Ventilation, air leakage, and various cutting, loading and support movement operations all have a role in dust distribution on longwall faces as shown by the results of a large number of dust measurements on different longwall operations in the Bulli seam on the South Coast. It is concluded that leakage of air on the face has demonstrable mfluence on the exposure of the shearer operator to dust level. It is possible to calculate dust generated by various elements of a rrurung operation on the face from a single point measurement. In the examination of dust deposition from the source of generation as a function of particle size, it is found that respirable dust can remain airborne over long distances without any significant drop in concentration, if unobstructed.

The benefit of gravity separation in improving total gold recovery in grinding circuits has been outlined in a significant number of papers to date. However, the use of batch centrifugal concentrators (BCC) as an industry standard to extract gold has limited the potential for maximizing gravity recoveries -particularly in coarse gold deposits. This is a reflection of the high upgrade ratios obtained by BCC's which has an inverse relationship with recoveries. Survey work in Australia has indicated that installation of the InLine Pressure Jig as an alternative to the Bee will significantly increase recoveries of gold by gravity and, accordingly, increase total gold recoveries and lower operating costs.

Microtunneling provides a necessary solution for multiple utility crossings associated with the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company?s (MTACC) Eastside Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road. Construction of four TBM tunnels and their approach structures at the eastern end of the project in Sunnyside, Queens required significant modification and expansion of the railroad infrastructure at this location. Maintenance of railroad traffic during project construction is a principal requirement. As a consequence fourteen (14) utility crossing segments are being installed under active traffic by microtunneling methods. Microtunnels were installed in a variety of conditions including depths, types of soils and construction restraints.

(communication to the Secretary*) :-The very interesting results obtained by Prof. Hofman and his assistants came to my attention when I had temporarily assumed charge of the metallurgical department of the Missouri School of Mines, and had found it, pending the completion of a new building, lacking a furnace in which to roast ore preparatory to the customary lead blast-furnace run. An attempt at lime-roasting had been already determined upon, but the use of a charge which would make a slag of definite composition was a new idea. The results following were obtained by Messrs. Aubrey Fellows, J. C. Long, E. R. Wash, and Dr. T. C. Tseung, under my supervision. It is regretted that the data are not more complete; but the work was done simply incidentally to securing the desired ore for the blast-furnace, with no idea of obtaining any results of especial interest. It is submitted because of the metallic lead obtained, no notice of which has been seen elsewhere. The ore was an aggregate of several lots of concentrates, apparently from Missouri ores. The analysis follows, with that of the limestone and sandstone used, as far as made:. Ore, SiO2, 3.04; Fe, 0.77; CaO, 2.53; Pb, 68.74; Zn, 5.77; S, 13.9 per cent.; limestone, SiO2, 1.0 ; CaO, 54.35 per cent.; sandstone, SiO2, 99.8 per cent. The converter was made in the shops from a sheet of No. 14 iron riveted in the shape of a truncated cone, 20 in. in diameter at the top, 15 in. at the bottom and 22 in. high. The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine if residues from fractional distillation represent a potential source of mineral values. A literature review and discussions with tar sand specialists failed to disclose the mineralogical nature of residues remaining after bitumen extraction. To develop this information, pilot plant tar sand residues or toluene-cleaned tar sands from 23 deposits were examined. The nature of the residues was determined by standard mineralogical methods and the chemical compositions were determined by X-ray and ICP (inductively-coupled plasma spectroscopy). None of the sands or concentrates examined contained sufficient valuable minerals to be economically important.

Introduction The Beattie mine is the first of its character to be exploited in Quebec. It is primarily a large low-grade gold deposit containing values which a few years ago would not have been considered as ore. Much interest is attached to this development as its success may mean a greatly enlarged scope to gold mining in Canada on deposits which have formerly been considered worthless. Because of its potential importance as a pioneer in low-grade gold mining, the Quebec Bureau of Mines decided to make a careful detailed study of the Beattie in the hope not only of assisting in its development, but of stimulating the search for similar essential geological conditions in other parts of the Province. This paper is a summary of the results obtained during two months on the property in 1932, supplemented by a few trips underground in 1933. The full report will appear in the Annual Report of the Quebec Bureau of Mines for 1932, Part C. Location and Means of Access: The Beattie ore-body is situated two miles west and one half mile north of the centre of Duparquet township, and approximately 22 miles north 28° west of the town of Noranda. Until the fall of 1932, access to the property was from LaSarre, on the Canadian National railway, over a thirty-mile water route with one portage 600 feet long; about 2,000 tons of machinery and supplies were taken in by that route. An automobile road, nine miles long, now connects the property with the Makamik highway, and a narrow-gauge railway, without ballast, gives outlet for concentrates from the mill to the C.N.R. tracks of the Rouyn-Taschereau line, nineteen miles distant.

"Fatigue presents several challenges for the mining industry. Depending on the specific occupation, daily work or operational setup on any given mine site, mining jobs can have a fair amount of labor-intensive tasks mixed with monotonous and repetitive duties. Combined with the long working hours and shift-work schedules of mining work, the prevalence of fatigue in mine workers may seem rather unsurprising.Mining is certainly not alone in facing the challenge of addressing worker fatigue. Indeed, many of the characteristics above mirror the similarities of fatigue in other industries, such as health care, aviation and security. To the extent that fatigue in mining acts like fatigue in any other industry, then any fatigue management applications, trainings, or interventions in existence can be borrowed from other industries and applied to mining in a cookie-cutter approach. However, some have argued that mining in particular is especially susceptible to increases in the prevalence of fatigue beyond the characteristics listed above due to the multifaceted combination of factors in mining environments associated with fatigue: dim lighting; limited visual acuity; hot temperatures; loud noise; highly repetitive, sustained, and monotonous tasks; shiftwork; long work hours; long commute times due to mine site remoteness; early morning awakenings; and generally poor sleep habits (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, 2012; Legault, 2011). Legault (2011) in particular argues that it is the combination of these factors simultaneously that can make mineworkers particularly susceptible to sleep deprivation and fatigue in comparison to other industries where these factors are often not present all together. If fatigue looks and acts different in mining, as others have argued, more research is needed to determine if, how, and why worker fatigue might need to be managed differently in mining.While the burden of fatigue on the mining population has not yet been evaluated thoroughly, methods and measures of fatigue management remain a popular point of discussion. Many commercial suppliers and consultancy groups have begun to develop technologically based fatigue monitoring systems (McMillian, 2013). Some technologies can monitor vehicle operators for indicators of wakefulness, such as percent eyelid"

"Abstract - The Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is located 265 km south of Kugluktuk (Coppermine), Nunavut Territory, Canada, in the west-central Slave structural province. The Izok deposit is owned 100% by Inmet Mining Corporation and represents one of the largest undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. The Izok deposit is hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks of late Archean age. The hanging-wall stratigraphy includes additional felsic volcaniclastic rocks, andesitic and basaltic flows, thin sulfide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sedimentary rocks. The felsic volcanic rocks are intruded by intermediate dikes and sills, followed by gabbroic dikes and sills. Both intrusive suites are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to the overlying flows. All lithologies are subsequently cut by younger, irregular, granitic pegmatite and diabase dikes. The volcanic and sedimentary rocks are regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene hornfels grade. The massive sulfides occur within a large (kilometer-scale) Na-depleted sericitic alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hanging-wall rocks to the deposit are characterized by zones of muscovite- biotite-sillimanite, lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite, and locally intense silicification and sodium metasomatism. All lithologies have been affected by younger Ca-metasomatism. As currently defined, the Izok deposit comprises a cluster of five complexly zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central West, Central East, and Inukshuk lenses. The first four lenses are amenable to open-pit mining, whereas the Inukshuk lens will require underground development. The total indicated mineral resource presently stands at 16.5 million tonnes with a grade of 2.2% Cu, 11.4% Zn, 1.1% Pb, and 60 g/t Ag. Inmet Mining Corporation is presently reviewing the economic feasibility of developing the property."

This study is the extension of an investigation of reclamation of floodplain areas in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District, Idaho, that are unuseable in their natural condition, by construction of landfills with mill tailings. The study develops a valley-wide tailings disposal plan to utilize 20 potential landfill sites on floodplain areas and presents measures for reclaiming the sites for subsequent productive use. Field and laboratory testing on a test section and two abandoned impoundments support the use of hydraulically deposited tailings for landfill construction. Hydrological testing has shown that controlled discharge from tailings impoundments results in contaminant levels in the discharge below regulated standards. Additional testing indicated that compacted soil liners and pond management provide adequate contaminant abatement where acid-generating tailings are encountered. Mechanical compaction, including surcharge loading, upgrades foundation support capacity so that construction on the surface of tailings deposits is feasible. On completion of the testing program, the test sections were abandoned and rehabilitated. Details concerning potential landfill sites have been refined. At recent production rates, the 20 sites would result in 680 acres of reclaimed land, while providing a minimum of 40 years of tailings storage capacity. A general design has been developed for the retention dikes. Aspects of embankment stability, including liquefaction are discussed, and are shown to provide an adequate factor of safety under the anticipated range of operating conditions.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale flammability experiments to investigate the possible use of water spray systems for inerting or quenching mine-gas ignitions, such as those encountered at the working face of a coal mine. The inerting results for premixed methane-air-water mixtures indicated that water droplets of less than 10 µm tend to be as effective as the vapor. Water requirements for inerting such mixtures were much smaller than those for quenching the sustained flame propagation by the application of water sprays. The minimum water mass concentration for quenching methane-air flames increased linearly with increasing droplet diameter (surface weighted mean) and decreased with increasing spray temperature, whereas the droplet surface area required per unit volume was essentially constant for a given gas mixture composition. Data extrapolations indicated that a quenching system may be feasible for the longwall mining application.

The Ban Houayxai mine (BHX) is a relatively low-grade, low-cost, open pit gold-silver deposit in Laos operated by Phu Bia Mining, a subsidiary of PanAust. The ore production rate at BHX is 4.5 Mt/a, with direct tipping to a semi-autogenous grinding/ball mill circuit with a carbon-in-leach process plant. Approximately 100 000 oz of gold is produced per annum.The operation is located in mountainous terrain with minimal run-of-mine stockpiling. This results in limited capacity for blending from stockpile, with the mill instead reliant upon direct feed ex-pit. Since commissioning in 2012, the plant has seen significant variation in milling rates due to variability in the feed properties of the oxide, transition and primary ores. As part of an ongoing continuous improvement program, an integrated approach was initiated, focusing on maintaining and enhancing production in the future as the proportion of harder primary ore increases. This will specifically focus on direct blending from the loading face using the ore properties and blast fragmentation to maintain mill throughput.This approach was based on the concept of physical assets management, commencing with improving information and knowledge of the condition of the orebody through modelling the characteristics, variability and performance of the feed for processes relevant to throughput. These models are used to support both mine and process plant production planning.The key ore feed characteristics and parameters modelled for the life-of-mine are blastability index, powder factor, crushability or impact resistance and grindability. These predictive spatial models were based on the data from diamond drill holes used in resource definition and geotechnical drilling programs by integrating geotechnical, geological, geochemical and metallurgical data.At the early stages of implementation, the models are being utilised for ore blending decisions to provide guidance and support for budgeting, long-term mine planning, blast design for mill feed and providing the mill with an expectation of performance.CITATION:Jackson, J, Gaunt, J and Astorga, M, 2014. The problem of automatic control of a coal mine ventilation network is discussed. It is found that the structure of the control sys-tem should have two levels, i.e. local regulation of ventilation para-meters (air flows) in faces to eliminate the effect of quick disturba-noes, and supervisory control of the whole ventilation process by pe-riodical modifications to the working characteristics of the main fans. Practical and theoretical problems connected with implementation of the system in Polish mining are listed and discussed. To solve these prob-lems a series of experiments with air flow control in three different coal faces were carried-out with the aim of checking the measuring and control equipment in a real mine conditions as well as investigatingthe gasodynamics of the ventilation process. The results of the experi-ments are analysdd, and used to verify the mathematical model of the gasodynamics of a longwall face.

Thermal treatment of respirable size silica dust samples results in marked changes in their hemolytic activity. These changes can be correlated with changes in the characteristics of the particle surface as measured by infrared spectra, zeta potentials, and specific surface area. Silica samples from various sources (Min-U-Sil, fumed silica, and a NIOSH standard sample) were heated or calcined at temperatures ranging from 100-1095C. The hemolytic activity of the crystalline materials decreased after thermal treatment. The behavior of the fumed material was found to be more complex. Material of very large surface area (small particle size) exhibits an initial increase in hemolytic activity upon calcination. This result confirms other experimental observations pointing to a particle size of maximum toxicity. Tre changes in hemolytic activity can be related to infrared spectra and zeta potentials of the materials. The absorption band in the 3200-4000 cm-1 frequency region of the fumed material disappears upon heat treatment while a sharp, characteristic band at 3750 cm-1 increases in intensity. Zeta potential measurements conducted in the pH range of 2.0-10.5 exhibit a unique change in zeta potential v.s. pH profile with heat treatment. These findings indicate that the removal of active surface silanol groups by calcination results in reduced cytotoxicity, as measured by a hemolysis test.

Central Andean (22¦S to 34¦S latitude) Miocene giant ore deposits share common features that reveal their origin. Tectonic and magmatic features include a relation to a shallow subduction zone, an association with the waning or initiation of a magmatic episode, emplacement at the time of uplift associated with crustal thickening and formation at times of major magmatic changes along the Andean margin. Rare Earth Element (REE) signatures in magmas erupted near the time of mineralisation indicate a progressive change from equilibration at depth with a hydrous, intermediate-pressure amphibole-bearing mineral residue to equilibration with an anhydrous high-pressure garnet-bearing assemblage. These features point to a common history. First, a relatively shallow subduction zone leads to hydration of a cool mantle wedge providing a source of fluids which builds up over at least several million years. Arc magmas formed at this time equilibrate with a hornblende-bearing residual mineralogy. Second, a compressive tectonic regime leads to crustal shortening and thickening that facilitates entrapment of arc magmas in the crust. Eventually, the magma-weakened crust yields to horizontal compression causing rapid crustal thickening. Fluids required for mineralisation are liberated as amphibole-bearing assemblages break down to garnet-bearing ones and over pressured fluids are released from plutons. Mineralisation subsequently ceases in the region unless continued dehydration of the slab and mechanical thinning of the continental lithosphere causes the previous conditions to repeat. The type of mineral deposit generated depends on the pre-existing continental lithosphere and the distance from the trench.

Solid oxide membrane (SOM) technology has been successfully employed for the production of high energy metals such magnesium, titanium and tantalum by directly reducing their oxides. This paper reports on the recent investigation done for calcium production by SOM process from calcium oxide, dissolved in fluoride and chloride based fluxes. This process employs an inert oxygen-ion-conducting stabilized zirconia membrane to separate the inert cathode in the flux from the anode. When the applied electrical potential between the electrodes exceeds the dissociation potential of calcium oxide, oxygen ions are driven out of the melt and through the zirconia membrane to the anode where they are oxidized. Reduced calcium metal deposits or evolves at the cathode depending on the operating temperature. The SOM cell has been electrochemically characterized, and key concepts related to CaO dissociation, leakage current, solubility of Ca in the flux, and hygroscopic nature of the flux relevant to the SOM process are explained.

This survey was conducted to determine the magnitude of the methane emission and control problem in U.S. bituminous coal mines. The resultant data indicate that the emission rate for any given coalbed depends primarily on the coal production rate and on mine depth, as well as on the nature of the coalbed and the surrounding strata. An excellent correlation was found between (1) the methane emission rate and (2) the product of coal production rate and mine depth for the mines in the Pittsburgh, Pocahontas Nos. 3 and 4, and the Illinois Nos. 5 and 6 coalbeds. The highest total emission rates found in U.S. bituminous coal mines were as follows, in million cubic feet per day: Monongalia County, W. Va., 39; Marion County, W. Va., 30.4; McDowell County, W. Va., 13.1; Washington County, Pa., 11.9; Greene County, Pa., 11.4; Buchanan County, Va., 21.6; Jefferson County, Ala., 10.3; and Franklin County, Ill., 6.6.

"Tshepong Mine, Harmony’s largest gold producing mine, is situated in the Free State portion of the Witwatersrand Basin, east of Odendaalsrus and north of Welkom, South Africa. The Basal reef is a narrow tabular conglomerate and is the main gold bearing ore body. The strata strikes mainly in a northsouth direction with an average dip of 22 degrees. Currently mining takes place at depths of between 1 690m and 2 150m below surface. The Basal reef unit consists of a conglomerate ranging between a few and 30cm in thickness. Some 80-90% of the gold occurs in the lower portion of the conglomerate. Directly above the conglomerate is a quartzite placer unit, the Basal quartzite, which is a clean, hard competent rock and varies in thickness between 50cm and 200cm. The Basal unit is overlain by the Khaki shale which can vary between 30cm and 500cm in width. It is weak and incompetent khaki coloured chloritic shale.A method of stoping, termed “undercut”, is practiced in order to remove the lower 15-20cm of the gold rich strata. The method entails removing this portion along with some 70-80cm of footwall host rock which is a strong competent quartzite. The hard competent quartzite overlying the conglomerate is left in-situ to form a competent hangingwall which can stabilize and prevent exposure of the weak Khakishale. This method of extraction was developed through trial and error and has been used reasonably successfully since its inception in the early 1960’s where the method was developed to extract the Basal reef at the Western Holdings Mines. Recently prospect drilling and a number of localised hangingwall failures indicated that the residual quartzite beam could be less than 60cm and in some instances as thin as 30cm in certain areas of the mine. The result of this is a less stable hangingwall which not only poses a safety risk to workers in these areas but also had the potential of locking up some 840 000 Tonnes of gold bearing ore. At the present gold price this amounts to revenue of approximately ZAR1.5 billion (U.S. $143 million).This paper discusses the method of “undercut stoping” and existing practices in place at Tshepong Mine. It also explores new initiatives such as the use of a simple freely-supported elastic beam solution to perform back analysis, on-site data capturing of beam thickness and support geometries in order to develop empirical design charts and numerical modelling to assist in the verification of the empirical design method."
