The relations between micros tructures and critical current density in transverse magnetic field were experimentally investigated due to each transformation of the 0 to 0' + P" phases at 700' C for superconductmainly examined using replication electron microscopy. The ß' or a precipitates were found to pin down magnetic flux lines in these alloys. The effects of precipitation upon the critical current density were discussed in relation with the size, spacing, and characler of these precipitates. HIGH magnetic field superconductors, such as Nb-Zr, Nb-Ti, and Nb-Zr-Ti alloys, have been recently put to extensive practical use as winding materials for superconducting magnets.13 The critical current density of these hard superconductors under an applied magnetic field is an important characteristic for magnet materials and is very sensitive to metallurgical structure. It is generally known that the critical current density is increased by introducing dislocations and precipitates into a superconductor; that is, dislocations and precipitates are presumed to be barriers that hinder quantized flux lines from moving.4'5 Theoretical6'7 and experimental analyses of the motion of flux lines and the interaction between flux lines and various defects have already been reported by many authors. Metallographic analysis of high magnetic field superconductors such as Nb-Zr and Nb-Ti is difficult, so that no quantitative relationship between microstruc-ture and critical current density has been established yet. In this paper, the effect of precipitation on the critical current density in magnetic field was investigated for two superconducting alloys, Nb-40Zr-10Ti and Nb-5Zr-60Ti. In these alloys the resistive critical field H, at 4.2oK was about 100 kG and the critical current density Jc at 80 kG was of the order of 104 amp per sq cm.13-l5 The superconducting properties were examined in relation to the microstructural changes due to transformation of i) the ß to ß' + ß" phases at 700°C for Nb-40Zr-10Ti alloy and ii) the ß to a + ß phases at 500°C for Nb-5Zr-6OTi alloy. The effect of size, spacing, and character of precipitates on flux line pinning was in particular examined. The microstructures were studied by means of residual resistivity, microhardness, and tensile strength measurements as well as by X-ray diffraction, optical, and replication electron microscopies. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Pure niobium, zirconium, and titanium, in the form of rods 0.8 cm in diam, served as raw materials. Results of chemical analyses of these rods are given in Table I. Ingots of the alloys, 0.4 cm in diam and 3 cm in length, were prepared by means of levitation melting, utilizing a copper mold in an argon-gas atmosphere. Samples from the ingot then were cold-worked by grooved mill to 0.2 cm in diam, heat-treated homogeneously (in the ß phase region) for 5 hr at 1100° in a vacuum of 1 x 106 Torr, and finally cold-drawn to 0.025 cm in diam. For heat treatments, samples were wrapped in niobium foil and sealed in an argon-gas atmosphere in fused quartz capsules. Water quenching was done after each heat treatment. Subsequently H-J, were performed at 4.2° by slowly transporting the current through the samples 4 cm long, under transverse magnetic field, until the least detectable resistive terminal voltage was observed. The resistive critical field H, was taken as the field at which 100 pv appeared at 4.2°K across a sample 3 cm in length, with a current of 5 ma. The critical temperature T, was measured by means of a conventional four-probe resistivity technique and taken as the temperature at which the sample resistance reached one-half of full restoration of the normal-state resistance with a current l ma flowing through a sample 2 cm in length. Precipitates were observed by means of optical microscopy and carbon replication electron microscopy. The etching solution consisted of 5 ml HF, 10 ml H2SO4 10 ml H2O2, and 50 ml H2O, and shadowed carbon replicas were examined in a itachi HU-11 electron microscope operated at 50 kv. Fibras de fique (Furcraea Andina) estão entre as lignocelulósicas naturais com grande potencial para utilização em compósitos poliméricos. O presente trabalho avalia a resistência ao impacto deste tipo de compósito com matriz epoxídica reforçada com diferentes percentuais de fibras de fique. As fibras foram embutidas sob pressão em mistura com resina epóxi DGEBA/TETA curada à temperatura ambiente por 24 horas. Os corpos de prova normalizados foram confeccionados com percentuais de até 30% em volume de fibras de fique alinhadas ao longo de todo o comprimento, estes corpos de prova foram então ensaiados em pêndulo de impacto Charpy e as superfícies de fratura analisadas por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, MEV. A resistência ao impacto aumentou substancialmente com a quantidade relativa de fibra de fique reforçando o compósito. Este desempenho foi associado à dificuldade de ruptura imposta pelas fibras bem como ao tipo de trincas resultantes da interação fibra de fique/matriz epoxídica que ajuda a absorver a energia do impacto.

"The subject of quartz occurrences in respirable coal mine dusts has been of increasing concern in recent years. The primary impetus for this concern has been provided by better measurement technology that has detected an increased number of mines with high quartz content in their respirable dusts. This paper presents the results of statistical analyses of quartz levels in multi-stage impactor samples from eighteen different coal mining sections located in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Colorado and Ucah. The quartz and kaolinite determinations were then determined by combining impactor stage loadings to provide larger dust masses and applying the infrared spectrometry procedure outlined in Bureau of Mines/MSHA Method P7.The results will be presented using two categories of data collected during two separate phases of the research:(l) quartz concentration data from mines where quartz was known to be present in relatively high concentrations, and(2) quartz concentration data from mines chosen at random.The aspects of the occurrence of quartz in coal mine airborne dusts that will be reported include the size dependence of the quartz content, quartz variations with location in the mining section, and variations due to mining region. The results of the study show a strong pattern of size dependence of the quartz content in mines for which high quartz concentrations exist. A similar, though less pronounced, pattern exists in mines chosen at random. Quartz levels appear to have a varying relationship to section location and strong geographical patterns do not appear to exist in the data collected. Kaolinite content was found to be similar to that of quartz with patterns that are somewhat more consistent."

Surveying what was done in 1929 in meeting problems of oil-field equipment corrosion, one is struck by the fact that fewer meetings were held for discussion of these problems and fewer papers written than in any year since the subject engaged the attention of petroleum engineers. This does not mean that progress has not been made, for a great deal actually has been accomplished. Recommendations that accompanied field reports have been put into actual trial and some results obtained are gratifying. The type of papers prepared also has undergone a change, for they now deal with things accomplished rather than recite damages and suggest possible remedies. Some of the most notable work pointing the way for future solution of many pipe line problems is that done for the U. S. Bureau of Standards by Dr. K. H. Logan and Dr. Gordon N. Scott, dealing with tests of pipe coatings and reports on soil conditions. Many facts of great importance have been isolated and defined by these two men, not only indicating what may be done in some instances to retard corrosion, but showing that things formerly considered of importance have little bearing apparently upon the practical results. All-aluminum Storage Tanks In April, 1928, an all-aluminum 500-bbl. field storage tank was put into actual field use in Crane County, Texas, together with another tank of the same capacity but made with steel bottom and lower section of side sheets and aluminum upper ring of side sheets and deck. In April, 1929, after a little over one year's use these tanks were opened and examined by a group of engineers and chemists. The results of the test were enlightening. Other tanks made entirely of steel and used in the same battery with the two test tanks had some of their side and bottom sheets destroyed by corrosion in six to nine months, but the all-aluminum tank was in actual use for 18 months before holes were found corroded through the bottom, when the tank was examined for a second time in September, 1929. Comparison of Grinding and Liberation Processes for Stalky Biomass Materials as a Prerequisite for Production of Energy Pellets with High Calorific Value Pelletising biomass, especially straw and stalky materials, requires a product specific size reduction and liberation. However, moisture content plays an important role in palletising and also affects the energetic properties of the biomass. The paper illustrates the characteristics of the mentioned type of biomass and specifies the necessities for production of energy pellets. Defined requirements for biomass energy pellets will be shown based on relevant standards. The work focuses on a comparative investigation of the straw fibres after grinding with hammer/impact mill and after the liberation of the straw fibres with twin-screw extruder (two different communition units). A traditional hammer mill as well as an hydrothermal process taking place in a twin-screw extruder were utilised. Results of the grinding and liberation of rye and wheat straw fibres are discussed based on a detailed particle characterisation (particle size and shape distribution). Besides high calorific value the main pellet quality parameters are mechanical stability, abrasion resistance and further combustion technical characteristics. The particle size distribution displayed optimum characteristics for the combustion processes to be carried out in a furnace. The durability of the pellets produced from straw fibres liberated with twin-screw extruder was comparatively better then that prepared with the straw fibres after grinding with impact mill. Particle size distribution, abrasion values and the strength characteristics showed a good correlation with each. The high presence of N and S would result in high NOx and SOx emissions, where as the high concentrations of Cl would corrode the furnace. These chemical properties of the straw would restrict its usage in small scale furnaces.

Although Mexico is known for its important base-and precious-metal deposits, and lately oil, some industrial minerals play an important role in the Mexican economy. Sulfur, the most important industrial mineral produced, accounts for approximately 7.5 percent of the total value of mineral production. This commodity is followed by fluorspar, which accounts for 6.4 percent. Predominantly, the fluorspar deposits are very high grade (75 percent CaF) and are contained in lower Cretaceous limestone in the states of Coahuila and San Luis Potosi. Base-metal deposits in the area of Parral (notably San Francisco del Oro), however, have become important fluorite producers in their own right. (San Francisco del Oro has 12 percent fluorite gangue.) Salt from the Guerrero Negro solar-evaporation ponds in Baja California account for 6 percent of the total shares; phosphate from Baja California also accounts for 6 percent. Barite from man to deposits in Lower Cretaceous limestone in Coahuila and exhalative deposits in the Paleozoic section of Sonora account for 1.0 percent. In addition, Mexico is an important producer of gypsum, graphite, and celestite. Although graphite and celestite are not large-scale operations and thus do not contribute much to the Mexican economy, the Mexican graphite and celestite deposits are among the most important in the world; Mexico is one of the world's few sources of celestite. The celestite is in the form of large, high-grade mantos in Cretaceous limestones in northern Mexico.

(communication to the Secretary *).-From an extended study of the Oatman and Secret Pass districts of Mohave County, Arizona, I believe that the genesis of the ore deposits, in most cases, is directly connected with rhyolitic intrusions later than the Tertiary flows; and that the developments of, the future will prove these intrusives to be the primary source of the ore. In support of this opinion I will instance the Wilhelm-Eclipse dike in Secret Pass and the Murdock, Nellie, Black Range dike and ledge in the southern part of the Oatman district. The Wilhelm-Eclipse dike is a very fine-grained light-colored siliceous rhyolite dike with a strike of N.45W. traversing the full length of the Secret Pass district about midway between two major faults which mark the easterly and westerly boundaries of the district. The link between the Lecco bypass and major road SS36 (Italy) requires the construction of a double two-way tunnel (through the mount San Martino carbonatic massif). The tunnel excavating section is about 90 sqm through mount San Martino carbonatic rocks. The mountain sides are unstable and are often the scene of large collapsing landslides (tens of thousand cubic metres). The tunnels are very close to the mountain sides. The use of blasting induces vibrations which may reach the Lecco built-up area. With a view to avoiding such dangers the excavating operations were carried out in two successive stages: - opening a pilot tunnel, whose section is about 10 square metres, by a full face TBM to eliminate the more intense vibrations which are generated by the first opening charges; - successive enlargement by blasting.

The Bureau of Mines has empirically determined ignition probability versus current for resistive circuits in an 8.3% methane-air atmosphere. Simple ignition probability, defined as the number of ignitions divided by the total number of sparks, was determined, and the corresponding currents were recorded. The experiment was designed to minimize the probability of not observing an ignition that should occur during a series of tests. For resistive circuits in 8.3% methane-air mixtures, the experimental results indicate that ignition was not achieved below 2,000 rnA at 20 V dc, 350 rnA at 30 V dc, 150 rnA at 40 V dc, and 175 rnA at 50 V dc. The simple probability of ignition corresponding to these currents is esti-mated to be, respectively, 1.0 x 10-6, 1.7 x 10-7, 3.0 x 10-7, and 1.0 x 10-5 The ignition mechanism seems to break down below this point, implying that a threshold current value exists below which spark ignition does not occur.

"A model was developed to use near-infrared (NIR) analysis of pulverized ore samples to estimate the recoverable gold content for ores from the Barrick Cortez Hills underground mine. Current routing practices use a ratio of the cyanide soluble gold content and fire assayed gold (CN/FA) to classify ores as oxide or refractory. Prediction accuracy of the NIR model was equivalent to the CN/FA ratio. Prediction accuracy was improved by combining the CN/FA ratio and the NIR spectra. Bootstrap validation estimates the root-mean-square error to be 9.92% with an estimated r-squared value of 0.893. This model will allow more accurate estimates of the variability in recoverable gold content throughout this mine. These data will aid in building an improved geo-metallurgical model or in making better informed routing decisions during the production cycle.INTRODUCTION The contained gold of an ore available for cyanidation is often related to subtle variations in the mineralogy. It is difficult and expensive to collect enough mineralogical information in order to predict how the variable mineralogy will impact the metallurgical results and project economics throughout the life of the mine or mill. Near-infrared spectroscopy may be an effective tool to rapidly and inexpensively collect discrete, quantitative mineralogical data for minerals that contain transition metal oxides, metal sulfides with semi-conduction properties, rare earth metals, and some chemical groups having di-pole covalent bonds such as carbonates, sulfates, and various types of clays (Hunt, 1977). Near-infrared spectroscopy can be a powerful tool for geo-metallurgical characterization of deposits where the presence of these minerals has direct or indirect relationships to metallurgical results such as grindability, regent consumption, or recovery. Near infrared spectroscopy is a rapid analysis that measures the intensity of reflected light in the near-infrared spectrum. The ranges for the ASD-Panalytical units used in this study extend through the visible spectrum and into part of the UV spectrum, reporting reflection by wavelength from between 350 nm to 2500 nm. Absorption peaks visible in this range are a result of interactions with outer valence elections or chemical bonds. The location and intensity of the peaks vary depending on the chemical composition and crystal structure of a solid indicating the presence and abundance certain minerals (Hunt, 1977; Clark, 1984)."

This is a progress report of an investigation by personnel of the Bureau of Mines from June to September 1951 to introduce preservative chemicals into growing timber. It also describes in detail the impregnation process, known as the collar method, developed by the United States Department of Agriculture2/ Twenty-eight trees were treated by this method, and a complete record was kept of each individual tree and of each timber cut from it. These timbers have been placed in a coal mine, and their tendency to decay is compared to that of adjacent untreated sets. Although several years will be required before final conclusions can be drawn, this report explains the appearance and encouraging results of the treated timber to date. Also included are some comparative costs of untreated timber, treated timber by the commercial pressure method, and treated timber by the collar method. INTRODUCTION In the hope of increasing the useful life of cut timber, experiments to impregnate growing trees with wood-preservative chemicals by utilizing the natural flow of sap have been carried on for centuries. None of the various methods used in these experiments has ever gained any widespread use because they have been commercially impractical.

To simulate brittle rocks, a mixture of glastone, sand and water was used as a model material. Thin galvanized sheets were used to create joints in blocks made out of the model material. To investigate the failure modes and strength, both the intact material blocks as well as jointed model material blocks of size 35.6 × 17.8 × 2.5 cm having different joint geometry configurations were subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compressive loadings. Results obtained from the intact model material blocks are used to validate a new intact rock failure criterion for biaxial loading. Results obtained from both the intact and jointed model material blocks are used to develop a strongly non-linear new rock mass failure criterion for biaxial loading. In this failure criterion, the fracture tensor component is used to incorporate the directional effect of fracture geometry system on jointed block strength. The failure criterion shows the important role the intermediate principal stress plays on rock mass strength. Zur Simulation spröder Gesteinsarten wurde ein Modellmaterial aus Dentalgips, Sand und Wasser hergestellt. Daraus wurden Blöcke gegossen, in denen mittels dünnen, galvanisierten Blechen Trennflächen erzeugt wurden. Es wurde das Versagensverhalten und die Festigkeit von intakten Blöcken sowie durchtrennten Blöcken mit unterschiedlicher Trennflächengeometrie untersucht. Aus den Ergebnissen der Versuche an intaktem Material wurde ein neues Versagenskriterium für biaxiale Belastungen validiert. Die Ergebnisse der Versuche an intakten und durchtrennten Blöcken wurden verwendet, um ein neues stark nicht-lineares Versagenskriterium für geklüftetes Gebirge unter biaxialer Belastung abzuleiten. Darin wird der Bruchtensor verwendet, um den Einfluss der Trennflächengeometrie auf die Festigkeit zu erfassen. Das Versagenskriterium stellt heraus, welche Bedeutung die mittlere Hauptspannung für die Gebirgsfestigkeit hat. Un mélange de platre dentaire, de sable et d’eau a été utilisé pour développer un matériau analogue des roches fragiles. De fines feuilles galvanisées permettent de créer des discontinuités représentatives des discontinuités naturelles dans des bloques fabriqués avec ce matériau analogue. Les modes de rupture et la résistance, tant pour le matériau intact que pour le matériau avec ses discontinuités, ont été étudiés sur des blocs de 35.6 × 17.8 × 2.5 cm soumis à des efforts de compression uniaxiaux et biaxiaux. Différentes configurations de géométrie de discontinuités ont été considérées. Les résultats obtenus à partir des blocs intacts permettent de vérifier un nouveau critère de rupture pour les roches intactes soumises à des efforts biaxiaux. Les résultats obtenus, tant avec les blocs intacts qu’avec les blocs avec discontinuités, sont utilisés pour développer un nouveau critère de rupture, fortement non linéaire, pour les massifs rocheux soumis à des chargements biaxiaux. Dans ce critère de rupture, un tenseur de fractures est introduit pour caractériser les effets directionnels de la géométrie des systèmes de discontinuité sur la résistance des blocs avec discontinuités. Ce critère de rupture démontre le rôle important de la contrainte principale intermédiaire sur la résistance des massifs rocheux.

Based on the principle of fly ash triboelectrification, the mineral electrical index and testing method are introduced. The electric differences of various mineral components of fly ash are discussed in view of the results of chemical and mineral composition analysis of the fly ash sample acquired from the Xin-wen power plant. The dielectric constant and charge-mass ratio of carbon and ash in the fly ash are determined. The data were then used along with the rotary triboelectrostatic separator (RTS) testing results to investigate the charging characteristic of fly ash particles in different sizes. The results show that the dielectric constant of fly ash with different particle size decreased with the decrease in particle size, which led to a poor electrical conductivity. Thus particle size has an important effect on conductivity. The charges of carbon and ash particles increased with decreasing particle size. The charge-mass ratio of carbon and ash particles of the same size increased with decreasing particle size. This indicates that finer particle size is more favorable for triboelectrification separation from the charging efficiency point of view. The rotary triboelectrostatic fly ash separation tests show that the best decarbonization performance was achieved with particles in the size range of 0.038-0.074mm with which the decarbonization rate and efficiency index reached 38.93% and 120.83% spectively.

Cyprus Metals' Sierrita mine is located in the Pima Mining District, Pima County, Arizona (Fig. 1), which is one of the largest known porphyry copper districts. The ore body is part of a large mineralized system that includes Cyprus' adjoining Esperanza mine. The copper and molybdenum grades being mined at Sierrita make it one of the two lowest grade porphyry copper mines in the world Mineral production from the district was first recorded in 1876. Copper from replacement deposits in carbonate rocks and copper¬-lead-zinc from veins in volcanic rocks were mined from several deposits. However, it was not until 1957 that the district commenced to become a major copper producer with the beginning of production from the Pima mine, which was the first open pit operation. Since that time, seven other open pit mines have come into production. Because of the variable copper prices and high operating costs, not all of the mines are operating today. A map of certain outcrops, plutons, and open pits, as well as older underground mining operations, in the Pima district is shown in Fig. 2.

The use of water covers is a globally-applied method for minimising acid rock drainage (ARD) and metal leaching. Although the subaqueous disposal of potentially acid-generating materials has been shown to effectively limit ARD, under certain scenarios, metal remobilisation can occur at circum-neutral pH. The following paper presents data from four case studies in which metal mobility from submerged mine waste resulted in degradation to water quality in the overlying water cover. Subcentimetre resolution profiling of dissolved constituents across the tailings-water interface (dialysis arrays), in conjunction with mineralogical information, were used to elucidate the controls governing metal mobility. The data illustrate four pathways of metal remobilisation, including: the release of zinc via the oxidative remineralisation of metal-rich organics at the tailings-water interface; enhanced remobilisation of arsenic as a result of anthropogenic eutrophication; the release of copper resulting from the pH-driven dissolution of treatment sludges; and the release of radium from uranium mill tailings due to the dissolution of radiobarite [(Ra,Ba)SO4] by sulfate-reducing bacteria. The results highlight the conclusion that the chemical stability of submerged tailings reflects both: the solid-phase characteristics of the tailings material; and the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the depositional environment. In particular, the data illustrate that rigorous characterisation of both the waste solids and receiving environment must be performed in order to assess their compatibility. The results have relevance to the management of tailings repositories including constructed impoundments, pit lakes and natural lakes.

"SUMMARYFollowing a magnetometer survey on the McCoy iron deposit, a trenching and drilling program was carried out by the Bureau of Mines in August 1944.This deposit is 32.3 miles southwest of Battle Mountain in the McCoy Mining District, Lander County, Nevada, and lies on the east flank of the Fish Creek Mountains at an altitude of 5,400 feet, about 1 1/2 miles south of the gold camp of McCoy.Total production from the deposit has been 400 tons of magnetite, mined by hand and shipped to the west coast for ship's ballast.Bureau drilled two holes to a total depth of 92 feet and excavated 12 feet of trenches. Both holes were drilled in the same ore body and engineered magnetite ore 14 and 11 feet thick. Trenching was used successfully to show the lateral limits of the ore.Magnetite ore bodies were found to occur as replacements of a limestone bed in quartzite. They outcrop near and parallel to the exposure of a diorite entrusting that forms a long westward-trending ridge. Although magnetic outcrops can be traced for 5,000 feet trenching definitely proved the ore bodies to be disconnected to have little or no lateral extent beyond their outcrops. Only two ore bodies more than 10 feet thick were found; one of these is the inaccessible to and the other was drilled by the Bureau."
