Investigation of standard tests used to establish the decrepitation rating of Western Australian iron ore showed scatter in results which could be reduced by textural type sampling. Testing of individual textural types resulted in separation.of a range of decrepitation behaviour patterns. No unique correlation was established between water content in goethite, or between any single mechanism and breakage in shock heating. The latter depends rather on several mechan- isms whose operation is controlled by the texture of the ore. Texture studies were used successfully to predict decrepitation behaviour which could be related to orebody structure for mine planning, and blending for sales or processing requirements.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Phd.(Process Engineering) degree Process modelling is an essential element in the development of advanced (model-based) process control systems, accounting for up to 80% of the cost of development. Often, models based on historic process data are the only viable option when dealing with processes that cannot be modeled cost-effectively from first principles. Despite major advances that have recently been made in the field of nonlinear process modeling, some basic idea of the dynamic behaviour of a process system is important prior to system identification. While many process systems seem unlikely to be linear, the possible nonlinear aspects of their dynamics are not necessarily supported by the data. This may have significant implications for subsequent system identification or interpretation of the data. For example, it is quite possible that an underlying nonlinear deterministic signal may be obscured by a high degree of measurement or process noise, to the extent that it may be critical in the choice of model to fit to the data. The method of surrogate data analysis has recently been proposed as a means to classify the underlying dynamics of complex systems, and in this paper the use of Fourier transform surrogates to classify process systems is explored. This case study demonstrates how integrating drone and GPS surveying with 3D modeling software creates more effective blast designs that address specific geotechnical challenges while improving safety and blast performance. In this case study an 80ft (25m) highwall experienced recurring slip plane failures exacerbated by a previously mined 40ft (12m) bench that removed back support, creating an unstable triangular rock mass. Previous blasting along this wall displaced the upper 40ft (12m) of material, opening geological discontinuities and causing progressive slope failures that compromised crew safety and blast effectiveness. High-resolution drone photogrammetry, GPS surveying, and laser measurements were employed to precisely map slip planes, bedding planes, and fault structures within the bench geometry. These geological features were imported into 3D design software to develop a shot pattern that strategically utilizes natural rock discontinuities rather than working against them. GPS-guided hole placement ensured accurate field implementation, while marking geological features on the surface of the bench provided visual references for the blast crew. The final blast design positioned the last row of holes to break preferentially along an existing slip plane while avoiding intersecting the next slip plane behind the blast. Explosive loading and timing sequences were adjusted based on the hole location relative to the 3D geological model to optimize fragmentation while maintaining wall stability. The optimized design improved highwall stability significantly, by reducing the slip plane failure mechanism that had previously compromised operations. Measurable improvements included enhanced highwall stability, reduced back-break, improved blast performance, and reduced safety risks for equipment operators and blast crews. Two subsequent shots using identical methodology were able to remove the rest of this problem area, confirming the repeatability and effectiveness of this integrated approach. This methodology demonstrates practical integration of surveying technologies with geological understanding to solve complex blasting challenges. Accurate 3D modeling of geological features enables blast designers to work with natural rock structures rather than against them, resulting in safer, more effective blasting practices. This case study shows the value of understanding the precise locations of geological features for optimizing blast design and provides a replicable process for addressing geotechnical challenges in blasting operations.

The South American porphyry copper province includes most of the Andean orogen, excepting the tin province of Bolivia. Porphyry coppers have not been commonly found within the tin belt, though copper-tin deposits in San Rafael, Peru and copper-tungsten deposits in Llamuco, Chile, are known. James" shows the depth to the Moho to appreciably thicken where the tin belt exists, but disclaims any genetic significance from this coincidence. Table I gives some of the most important porphyry copper deposits explored to date, but does not include Antaminas, Peru, nor a number of other large skarn deposits associated with intrusions. V. D. Perry* points out that porphyry copper mineralization does occur to some extent in the intrusion associated with many of these skarn deposits. Also not included are the suspected possible porphyry type occurrences, such as, for example, quartz-sericitically altered lower levels of the Casapalca mine, Peru. Many deposits not well enough documented to list in a summary paper are also excluded. Should anyone care to tabulate all other large copper de- posits in South America, they could demonstrate that a tremendous potential awaits the proper political and economic climate in the future.

The phase structure and aging characteristics of two nickel-base alloys, Inconel 718 and 702, were investigated. Wrought and cast Inconel 718 showed ArisCb as the major hardening phase, as well as ture was positively identified. Inconel 702 had Ni3Al as the major hardening phase, as well as Cr7C3-of the phase amounts with temperature was determined. 1 HE value of phase structure and aging rate information in the utilization of alloys has been well established. As part of a continuing program, the results obtained on two nickel-base alloys, hconel 718 and Inconel 702, are presented here. Inconel 718 is a relatively new alloy considered for application in both sheet and cast form. Its novelty lies in the use of high columbium tantalum levels in a Ni-Cr-Fe base. No previous work on this type of alloy has been reported in the literature. Inconel 702 is being used now as an oxidation-resistant sheet alloy. Occasional fabrication problems spurred work on its basic structural behavior. The composition of 702 is essentially nichrome plus aluminum and titanium for strengthening and added oxidation resistance. This puts it in the basic class of other nickel-base alloys which have already been studied. The two alloys will be treated separately. INCONEL 718 Phase Study Methods. The phases present after the various conditions investigated were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis of two different elec-trolytically extracted residues and microscopic examination. The extraction methods, using 10 pct HC1 in alcohol and 10 pct H3PO, in water and the X-ray technique have been described previously.' The effect of temperature on the phase behavior was studied on sheet material using the following heat treatments: 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1300 100 hr, water quench 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1400°, 100 hr, water quench 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1500°F, 100 hr, water quench 2250o 2 hr, ice brine quench 1700°F, 48 hr, water quench 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1850°, 24 hr, water quench 2250°, 2 hr, ice brine quench 2000°F, 6 hr, water quench The high solution temperature was an attempt to dissolve as many phases as possible without causing melting. Aging exposures were made longer than normal heat treating times in order to approach equilibrium conditions more closely. Cast material was examined only in the as-cast condition and with the normal heat treatment (1700°F, 1 hr, air cool 1325oF, 16 hr,air cool). Materials. The full phase study was performed on sheet specimens approximately 1/2 in. by 2 in. by 1/16 in. The cast pieces were cut from the gating system of a vacuum-cast test piece. An all weld-metal specimen was made by running many weld beads on the sheet using filler made from the sheared edges of the sheet. All external contamination was removed by belt-sanding followed by an electro-polishing treatment. The typical composition of wrought Inco 718 is as follows: The alloy is air-melted. Cast hco 718 may have higher molybdenum. Mine fires are a serious hazard; surveys show that the coal-mining industry lags considerably behind industry in general in planning and training for fighting fires, and providing adequate fire-protection facilities. The results of the experiments discussed in this paper emphasize that every effort must be made to extinguish a fire in its incipient stage. The research also demonstrated that extinguishing agents and techniques, superior to those presently used in most operating mines, are available. An underground coal mine fire, if not extinguished quickly, can develop rapidly, create a serious hazard, and cause loss of life and property. The problem of controlling a fire increases in direct relationship to the time interval necessary to initiate control measures; as the fire increases in size and intensity it becomes progressively more difficult to cope with roof control, visibility, ventilation, and explosion prevention. Despite the constant vigilance of the industry, the number of coal mine fires is increasing. During the eight-year period, July 1952 to July 1960, following enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, the Bureau of Mines investigated 401 fires that caused 30 fatalities and 75 injuries. More than half of these fires burned for more than one shift; 20 pct could not be extinguished by direct attack and had to be sealed. Agents and techniques for extinguishing simulated mining-machine and underground coal fires have been investigated in the Bureau's experimental coal mine. The research shows that visibility in the fire area is a primary factor affecting control operations. Associated with good visibility is accessibility to the fire; the closer the attack can be made, the less time and quantity of agent are required for extinguishment. Approach to the fire and visibility are hindered by the smoke and hot gases backing up against the ventilating current. In open entries an increase in air velocity assists in driving smoke ahead; at low airspeeds approach can be made by placing a brattice across the lower two-thirds of the entry, pushing the smoke ahead with water sprays, or discharging rock-dust from a rock-dust distributor. INTRODUCTION The radon problem concerns the radiation exposure from inhaled short-lived radon daughters and the associated risk for the induction or promotion of lung cancer. In several groups of miners which were exposed in the past to relative high radon levels during their underground work, an excess lung cancer frequency has been observed. On the basis of these findings it has to be stated that the inhalation of radon daughters is the most important radiation hazard in mining. Involved in this radon problem in mines are the difficulties to measure the individual radon daughter exposure of miners and to estimate the dose to critical cells and target tissues in the lung from inhaled radon daughters. And finally the reduction of radon levels in mines confronts us with special technical problems which are difficult to solve. Thus the setting of annual limits for the radon daughter exposure of miners alone is not sufficient to guarantee an appropriate standard of radiation safety. Of same importance are the improvement of air monitoring and the optimization of technical protection measures in mines. This has to be kept in mind for the following considerations on exposure limits. The ICRP has recommended in 1959 for the first time a maximum permissible concentration (MPC) for the occupational exposure to radon and its short-lived daughters (ICRP, 1959). This MPC in air was derived from a maximum permissible dose equivalent of 0.15 Sv (15 rem) per year to the epithelium of the large bronchi which was regarded as the "critical tissue". This old MPC-value was derived using a simplified lung model which paid main attention to the dose contribution from the inhalation of unattached 218Po(RaA) atoms. Since this time more realistic dosimetric models for radon daughters have been developed; some of these models will be presented in special papers on this conference. Furthermore in the last 10 - 20 years substantial epidemiological information on the lung cancer risk among several groups of Rn-exposed miners has become available. Taking into account these epidemiological and new dosimetric findings the ICRP has adopted in March this year new recommendations on occupational limits for inhalation of 222Rn, 22ORn and theirshort-lived daughters. This report will be published this year as ICRP Publication 32 (ICRP 1981). The recommended limits for radon daughters were derived from the basic dose and risk limits as they were proposed by ICRP in its new basic recommendations (ICRP Publ. 26, 1977). In the following this basic system of dose limitation is shortly outlined before the special recommendations for radon daughters are described. [BASIC CONCEPTS AND LIMITS] The new basic recommendation of ICRP (Publ. 26, 1977) proceed from the assumption that in the dose range which is relevant for radiation protection, the risk RT of so-called stochastic radiation effects (carcinogenic and genetic effects) in a target tissue T increases proportionally with the mean dose equivalent HT in this tissue: RT = aT HT. If several target tissues are irradiated the total individual (stochastic) risk is given by the sum of risks in these tissues: [R = ?TRT = ? T aT HT]. Thus this concept of individual health detriment takes into account the risk contribution from each relevant tissue. It replaces the old concept of the critical tissue, which neglected the exposure of other tissues. Applying this new concept a dose quantity can be defined which is proportional to the total individual radiation risk from stochastic effects. This so-called "effective dose equivalent (HE)" is given by the sum of the weighted dose equivalents in the relevant tissues: [HE = E wT HT with E wT = 1 T '1] The weighting factor wT of each tissues follows to wT = aT/awB, where awB is the total stochastic risk coefficient for a uniform irradiation of the whole body. For the lung as a single organ comprising several target tissues, the ICRP recommends a total weighting factor w = 0.12 (ICRP 1977/79). This concept of risk or detriment, respectively, has important consequences. To meet the objectives of radiation protection the new ICRP-system of dose limitation is based on the following three principles: 1) The justification of practices involving radiation exposures; no pratice shall be adopted unless it produces a net benefit. 2) The ALARA-principle that all exposures shall be kept as low as reasonably achievable; this requires the optimization of the level of protection. 3) The limitation of individual exposure (annual dose limits). It is important to note that the dose limits for individuals are only one part of this system of dose limitation. Furthermore, these limits cannot be regarded as a boundary between safe and unsafe. They have to be interpreted as the lower boundary of an unacceptable exposure region. This means that in addition to the observance of these basic dose limits it is demanded to optimize the level of protection. This paper presents an apparatus and procedures to implement a methodology for controlling ambient air quality in a confined working environment, such as an underground mine, an underground storage area, or a tunnel. The air quality control methodology is directed at limiting the quantities of exhaust pollutants emitted by diesel-powered vehicles into the confined space by identifying vehicles that are excessive polluters. The methodology is based on tailpipe and ambient air measurements in the confined space, and the ambient air threshold limit values (TLVs) for the various diesel exhaust pollutants. The methodology consists of two computational methods; a deterioration criteria computational method to identify excessive polluting vehicles, and an engine performance computational method to determine engine performance and to provide information needed to diagnose engine faults. The methodology is designed for implementation in conjunction with a preventive maintenance program. The first part of the paper describes the mine air and tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus and techniques used to obtain data. This is followed by sections discussing the deterioration criteria and the engine performance computational methods. A section discussing some common engine emissions-related faults is also presented. Lastly, a proposed procedure to implement the methodology including a possible hierarchical structure for mine personnel involved to implement the procedures is presented.

Seismicity associated with deep block cave mining operations in hard rock can give rise to dynamic loading of the mining openings. A description is given of the source and damage mechanisms associated with such seismic events, and the possible demands placed on the rock support by the resulting dynamic loading. In addition, production level drifts are often subjected to large static deformations during mining. Appropriate support, able to sustain large static deformations, and capable of absorbing the energy released during dynamic loading, is described. The performance of these support types has been determined by means of large-scale dynamic loading tests, and large deformation static laboratory tests. Finally, a support system which is considered to be appropriate for extraction drifts in block cave layouts subjected to dynamic loading is described.

Introduction In a companion article, Surveys at Great Bear Lake, 1931, R. C. McDonald has described the general character, topography, and climate of the Great Bear Lake-Coppermine River area and the main means of access (l). The present paper will largely be confined to the geological features of the district. In the last two years, the rocks of the region have received considerable attention, and papers including references to .the geological succession have been written by Knight(2), Duncan(3), Norris( 4), Reid(5), Cameron(6),and Kidd(7). The writer confined his field-work during the 1931 season to the district between LaBine point and Hunter bay and northwest to the head of McTavish arm. Brief trips were made down the Sloan river from McLaren lake, 25 miles northeast of Hunter bay, to that place, to Dowdell (Sixty-six) point, the south point of Echo bay, and to the region north of the Dismal lakes and west of the Coppermine river. The inner part of Echo bay, which is the area discussed by Reid and Cameron, has not been seen by the writer and the geology there will not be discussed.

"This research represents a shift away from empirical models that lock the industry into 50-year old inefficiencies with little response to operating variability. The mechanistic and intrinsically dynamic mill model under development steps up to a new paradigm using the latest computing capabilities and physical understanding of breakage and transport to transform predictive capabilities for design, optimisation and on-line control with variable feed. The milling process is broken down into discrete sub-processes, each of which can be modelled as an object in the whole model and in the model code. These objects can be upgraded or exchanged without having to rewrite or restructure the remainder of the code. Sub-processes include: feed into mill; transport along mill; presentation to impacting events; range of impacting forces; probability of being impacted in different zones in the mill as a function of particle size and density; suspension in slurry; and discharge out of the mill. The unit and processes surrounding the mill (feed and recycle conveyors, slurry pump and pipe, cyclone and recycle crusher) have also been modelled, in order to incorporate the effect of recirculating load coming from a cyclone or a recycle pebble crusher, respectively for ball mills or SAG mills. Each unit is modelled dynamically and PID controllers have been added to control pumping flowrate from sump and water addition for cyclone feed dilution. The paper demonstrates the predictive capability of a dynamic, mechanistic model and is used to test the sensitivity to the sub-processes, comparing different formulations and highlighting the aspects that require further development. Validation on pilot tests and application to industrial data is presented. This approach is currently undergoing industrial trial on sites, for use in on-line model-informed process control. Considerable further development is required to incorporate the full mechanistic structure planned for this model."

"Rare earth elements are becoming increasingly in demand, due to their prevalence in both renewable energy devices and high-end electronics. The characterization of the composition, morphology and volume fraction of the various phases that have valuable rare earths in the ores are needed to find the optimal industrial process to extract the ores containing the rare earths. Rare earth-bearing minerals contain many elements with the M-and L-lines overlap, requiring a high degree of resolution, pushing the boundaries of scanning electron microscopy quantitative analysis. Enhanced microscopy at a high spatial resolution with improved x-ray quantitative analysis enables the accurate determination of the distribution of the desired rare earths in various mineral phases. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements are becoming increasingly in demand, due to their prevalence in both renewable energy devices and high-end electronics. From batteries (lanthanum and cerium), to magnets (dysprosium and neodymium) and lighting (yttrium), the rare earth elements are crucial to the advancement of technology, and to energy saving devices (Crow, 2011). The goal of this project is to characterize the composition, morphology and volume fraction of the various phases that have valuable rare earths in the ores in order to estimate the economical VALUES (of the ores and to find the optimal industrial process to extract the ores containing the rare earths. High spatial resolution imaging and x-ray microanalysis are needed to reach this goal. In this work, the results obtained with a cold-field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and a silicon drift detector (SDD) energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) detector at low accelerating voltage are compared to experimental conditions typically used with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) instrument.With this improvement, a detailed scientific analysis of the composition of these, and other, ores will become possible with a SEM/EDS system. This will help to better understand how such ores were formed, hence assisting in finding them, and to better understand how to process them in preparation for high end industrial applications, namely through mineral processing."

As the basis for the State of Minnesota's Regional Copper-Nickel Study environmental evaluation, hypothetical mine models were developed ranging in ore capacity from 5.35 to 20.00 x 106 mtpy. Open pit and underground mining operations were defined utilizing conventional methods of ore extraction. Processing of the copper-nickel sulfide material involved conventional bulk flotation of the valuable minerals, with maximum water recycle And tailing disposal. Flash smelting and electrolytic refining of the concentrate resulted in 0.10 x 106 mtpy copper plus nickel metal, plus associated cobalt and precious metals. Variations in model parameters allowed environmental trade-offs to be identified.

There are several ways in which to classify refractories. The most suitable one is based on their general composition or raw material content. The categories are: 1. Aluminosilicate brick which include the fire clays and alumina and high alumina raw materials. 2. Basic brick which includes magnesia and chrome ore alone and in various combinations. 3. Silica brick which uses gannister or high purity gravels and sands. 4. Insulating brick are generally of the aluminosilicate type but may be most all refractory raw materials. 5. Special refractories are made from raw materials of zircon, zirconia, ultra high alumina, silicon carbide, fusion cast products, chromic oxide, carbon and graphite. The raw materials that make up these different categories are what we are briefly going to consider. Emphasis is placed more on the most important raw materials.

INTRODUCTION Idarado Mining Company, a subsidiary of Newrnont Mining Corporation, is situated high in the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado. Portals, offices and surface plants are located near the towns of Ouray and Telluride at elevations ranging from 9,000 to 12,000 feet. The Ouray portion of the development was initiated in 1943. Upon completion in 1945 of a 250-ton mill, processing of development ores containing copper, lead and zinc was undertaken; thus, serving as a pilot testing unit for larger scale milling operations. These facilities were subsequently enlarged and utilized until 1956. Meanwhile, in 1953 Idarado had acquired The Telluride Mines Company, 62 miles distant by highway; however, only six miles via a network of tunnels which eventually linked the two workings. Extensive underground development and increased ore production necessitated reconstruction and expansion of the milling plant. The facility was designed to accomodate processing of 1700 tons of ore daily. This goal was achieved and it represents the current daily output. In this study, numerical simulations of yield pillars employing the finite element method with time-dependent Drucker-Prager material model are conducted. The stress control mechanism of yield pillars on weak floor strata is studied. The development of pillar yield zone, the distribution of pillar stress and the development of failure zone in the weak floor strata are investigated. The study indicates that a properly selected yield pillar size may significantly reduce the peak stress induced in the weak floor strata and effectively control the development of failure zone in the floor.

"Current continuous casting processes are going through a rapid evolution of advances and new developments. At the same time, intense efforts are being directed to the development of radical new technologies such as continuous casting of thin slabs and strip steel.Traditionally, the casting processes for steel have been anticipated by the development and implementation of processes in the non-ferrous industry. This trend is reviewed and what it may portend for steel is described.IntroductionThe continuous casting of steel has been a widely adopted process in the production of steel. The concepts for this processing go back into the early and mid 1800's; however, commerical development was delayed for a variety of reasons until the mid twentieth century.Beginning in the early 1960's, adoption of continuous casting was initiated and continues at this point in time to be accelerated. In Japan, more than 90% of the steel produced is continuously cast (1). More than 50% of the steel produced in the United States is continuously cast and this fraction continues to rise (2). Numerous examples can be cited of installations costing well over $200,000,000 which have provided a payoff in less than a year and a half. As this process has continued to be applied and its technology to increase, computer control systems have been installed. In particular, in the larger plants producing slabs, sophisticated computer systems involving the integration and networking of mini-computers, micro-computers, and mainframe including back-up systems at all levels are being utilized. Pehlke (3), and Harabuchi and Pehlke (4) have described the structure of these systems."

Recently, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration focused much of its attention on addressing health and safety issues at small mines. Some of the more innovative interventions practiced by small businesses in general industry are discussed for consideration of their applicability to the mining industry. The most effective intervention strategy that was developed for small businesses is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Consultative Program. The details of this program and other intervention strategies used by small mines and small businesses are presented.
