"The Eastern Abitibi Sub province (Quebec segment), contains two main types of gold deposits: the common quartz-vein type and the rare pyritic type. Both occur in areas dominated by volcanic rocks and are spatially associated with major fault zones.Quartz-vein gold deposits consist of simple to complex networks of quartz-carbonate-pyrite veins in reverse shear zones and extensional fractures. They occur in areas dominated by mafic volcanic rocks and are commonly associated with small syn- to late-tectonic porphyritic felsic intrusions. Associated alteration, which postdates peak metamorphism, is dominated by carbonatization, sericitization and pyritization of the wallrocks. These deposits formed late in the geologicalevolution of the Abitibi.Pyritic gold deposits range from deformed massive sulphide lenses to zones of syntectonic pyrite-rich veinlets and associated pyrite disseminations. These deposits occur in environments dominated by felsic volcanic rocks that are typically converted to sericite schists near the deposits. The associated pre-metamorphic aluminous alteration is now characterized by metamorphic sericite, andalusite, kyanite and chloritoid, overprinted by a late retrogression of alumino- silicates. These deposits probably represent deformed volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, but the timing of gold introduction in these is not fully understood.The differences in geological attributes reflect significant differences in the genesis these deposits: the pyritic deposits probably have a multistage genesis, including a pre-tectonic stage, in contrast to a single stage late-tectonic genesis for the quartz-vein deposits.RESUMELa partie Est de la Sous-Province de l’Abitibi( segment québécois) renferme deux types de gites d' or: ceux de type ""veine de quartz"" et ceux, plus rares, de type ""pyriteux"". The Golden Mile, which has been mined continuously for the past 100 years by both underground and more recently open pit methods, occupies an area of 1.2 km by 4 km adjacent to the city of Kalgoorlie Boulder in Western Australia (Figure 1). Large-scale open pit mining at the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston operations is currently extracting 7.8 million tonnes of oxide and sulphide ore for a total production of 522 000 oz per annum. The effectiveness of grade estimation techniques at KCGM has been examined with reference to existing 10 m bench sample data from all operating areas within the Eastern Lode System of the Main and North pits. The aim of the study was to recommend practical parameters for grade control estimation. The review included comprehensive variography and comparison of nonparametric estimation methods (Joumel, 1983) such as indicator kriging and probability kriging with ordinary kriging, leading to the development of improved grade control parameters and procedures for both daily quality control and short term mine planning. This paper reviews the geological, statistical, geostatistical, mining and modelling features studied in order to present KCGM's Mining Department with recommendations for improving grade control.

An investigation has been made of the radial heat-wave process using a mathematical model in two-dimensional cylindrical coordinates. This model considers combustion, convection and conduction inside the reservoir, but only conduction in the bounding formations. From a study of the general features of the process, an important phenomenon has been revealed, namely, the feedback of heat into the reservoir on the trailing edge of the heat wave. The effects of various process variables on the performance characteristics of the process have also been investigated. It was found that up to the time when the combustion front reaches a given point, the per cent heat loss, provided it is not higher than 40 per cent, is approximately directly proportional to the square root of thermal conductivity arid fuel content, but inversely proportional to the square root of gas-injection rate and oxygen concentration. The effecr of reservoir thickness is more pronounced, since halving the thickness doubles the per cent heat loss. The most decisive factor in determining the center-plane peak temperature is the fuel content of the reservoir. Within the temperature range investigated, doubling the fuel content doubles the peak temperature in the early stage, but the rate of decline of the peak temperature is high. Reservoir thickness is also a very influential factor. The peak temperature is lowered when the thickness is reduced; however, the effect of thickness becomes less pronounced when the thickness is high. Reduction of oxygen concentration increases the peak temperature in the early stage but lowers it afterwards because of the higher rate of decline of the peak temperature. Increase in gas injection rate or decredse in thermal conductivity geives a higher peak temperature which stays high for a longer period. The propagation range of the heat wave is chiefly governed by the fuel content of the reservoir. An increase of 0.2 1b/cu ft in the fuel content increases the propagation range by 100 per cent. The propagation range is more than doubled by doubling the gas injection rate, or reservoir thickness, or by reducing the thermal conductivity by 50 per cent. Comparatively, oxygen concentration has less effect on the propagation range. INTRODUCTION Several investigators have conducted theoretical studies of a radial heat wave. Vogel and Krueger1 studied a system with a moving cylindrical heat source of constant temper- ature, considering conduction in the radial direction only. Ramey2 included conduction in the vertical direction in his studies. Bailey and Larkin2 attacked a more general problem where initial well heating, vertical heat losses and arbitrary frontal velocities were included. In all these studies, however, conduction was considered to be the only means of heat transfer. Bailey and Larkin in a later paper included the effects of convection in a study involving both linear and radial geometries. Vertical heat losses were neglected in the radial case. Katz5 studied a similar problem in a one-dimensional radial model, using a heat-loss coefficient to account for vertical heat losses. Selig and Couch6 mployed a cylindrical model and investigated two limiting cases. In one case they considered no heat loss from the reservoir whereas in the other they assumed a constant temperature at the interface between the reservoir and its bounding formations. Thomas' studied a more general case but assumed a permeable bounding formation so that the convection effect is not confined to the reservoir. In the present work a more realistic and more generalized model is used. It involves a two-dimensional cylindrical system with combustion, convection and conduction inside the reservoir, but only conduction in the bounding formations. The purpose is to establish the temperature distribution both inside and outside the reservoir, to study the general features of the radial heat wave process, and to investigate the effects of various process variables on the performance characteristics of the process. THEORY We fist consider a circular porous reservoir of thickness H extending vertically from y = — H/2 to y = + H/2. The reservoir extends from a well bore radius r, to an external radius re. A stream of oxygen-containing gas is introduced into the reservoir through the wellbore. The oxygen-containing gas reacts with the fuel contained in the reservoir and forms a combustion front wherever the prevailing temperature can support the combustion. It is here assumed that this combustion front constitutes a cylindrical surface source of heat having an infinitesimal thickness in the radial direction and extending vertically throughout the whole thickness H. This is designated as Region I. We next consider a Region II corresponding to the upper and lower formations bounding the reservoir, extending from y = — - to y = — H/2 and from y = + H/2 to y = + m. Since r, is very small, we may assume that the two bounding formations have the same dimensions, symmetric with respect to the center plane of the reservoir. Worldwide, metal mines are going deeper. For example in Canada there are six such mechanized mines planning production at 3000m (10,000?). Working at such depths challenges all aspects of mining including the provision of ventilation to supply an equitable working climate for personnel and machinery. This paper explores the overall challenges of supplying ventilation in Canada?s deepest mines and how the volumes required could be minimized. This is essential because it must be remembered that ventilation and refrigeration are not only costly items to supply, but the magnitude of their cost is also very sensitive to the volume supplied. For ventilation this is obvious because of the cubic relationship between volume and cost. In deep mines, the main function of ventilation is the removal of heat transferred from the strata and generated by the mining machinery, and the air volumes supplied are designed accordingly. The second consideration is the removal of other pollutants that could be harmful to humans such as diesel and explosive fumes. However, the need for ventilation at its present design levels could be reduced. This paper discusses the implications of such technologies as: teleremote mining and alternatives to diesel equipment on the magnitude of the volume supplied; ventilation-on-demand which recognizes ventilation as a costly and limited resource; plus other aspects, such as the benefits of controlled recirculation, local cooling, and heat rejection back to the strata to gain further advantage from new developments. Furthermore, this paper advances the need to be able to design ventilation systems more cost effectively and how such new advances as process simulators can be used in conjunction with ventilation simulators to explore the diverse options that could affect the air volumes required and provide more realistic economic data upon which to base design decisions.

ROASTING FERRUGINOUS ZINC-SULFIDE ORES IN 1912, Mr. J. B. Ideating was developing an electrolytic-zinc process for application to the ores of the Bully Hill mines of the General Electric Co. These ores consist of blende and pyrite so finely crystallized and so intimately mixed that no mechanical separation of the individual minerals had been found possible. The ore was reduced to about 60 mesh and roasted in a hand-rabbled reverberatory furnace preparatory to leaching with sulfuric acid. The extractions obtained were quite irregular, varying from a minimum of about 70 per cent. to a maximum of about 90 per cent. This irregularity led to the construction of a small electrically heated roasting furnace, and to the study of roasting under definitely controllable conditions. From time to time, these studies have been extended to other ores. Several commercial-plant operators profess to have gained useful information from the results of these studies and it is hoped that their usefulness may be extended by this publication. EXPERIMENTAL ELECTRIC ROASTING FURNACE The furnace used for experimental work is shown in Fig. 1. One fire-clay sagger, or pot, was set within another and the space between the two filled with Silox heat insulation. The hearth is a cast-iron plate with an imbedded ribbon of nichrome wire; this wire heater is connected to a potential regulator, which permits a very close voltage control. A mechanically driven arm is fitted with rabble blades so arranged that a uniformly thick ore bed may be maintained indefinitely. This arm is usually driven at about one revolution per minute but its speed of rotation can be varied as desired. Compressed air is led into the furnace through a meter, and it was found necessary to preheat the air in order to secure the definitely isothermal conditions sought.

Mined-out limestone/aggregate quarries in Japan contain many high and enormous pit walls. Many precious resources are abandoned in these final pit walls. In addition, there are many mines which are located in or near populated areas in Japan. Utilisationof the potentially useful under- ground space at mined-out sites is a topic relevant to the practice of surface mining. This paper describes and discusses the concept of underground space utilisation and tunnelling systems, referring specifically to geotechnical/ tunnelling parameters.

Adobe, dried mud bricks, have been used since before historic time in the construction of dwellings. Building materials are normally evaluated for thermal performance based on measurements known as R- and U-values. The R-value is an indicator of the ability of a wall to insulate effectively and the higher the R-value, the better it is as an insulating material. The U-value, or value of conductance, is the reciprocal of the R-value and reflects the rate at which heat is conducted through a material. But the "heat capacity of the wall" must also be considered. This measures the length of time that passes before a steady state of heat flow is achieved. The effective U-value measures both the resistance to the transfer of heat and the capacity to hold heat. These latter value make adobe a far more interesting as a modern building material that was formerly recognized.

ALTHOUGH MANYSTUDIES HAVE SHOWN an association between operating heavy construction equipment and symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), little research has been performed that systematically characterizes the exposure of operating engineers to ergonomic hazards. This study evaluated: 1) vibration at the seat/operator interface;2) transmissibility of vibration in the Z-axis; 3) psychophysical ratings of vibration level and vibration discomfort; and 4) postural requirements of the job. Results indicate that the digging operation had higher levels of total weighted acceleration than high- or low-idling conditions. Transmissibility data showed that the seat amplified vibration, particularly in the lower frequencies. Seats demonstrated that they may not be sufficient in protecting operators from long-term effects of vibration exposure. High positive correlation was found among subjective ratings (vibration discomfort and vibration level), but moderate positive correlation was found between subjective ratings and quantitative vibration levels. Postural evaluations revealed that the operators were required to assume awkward postures of the neck, shoulder and trunk while performing their jobs. Work-related injuries and illnesses pose a continuing threat to the health and well-being of American workers. The construction industry has been historically recognized as having higher rates of fatality, injury and illness than other industries (McVittie285+; BLS). In 1994, an estimated 218,800 lost-work-day injuries were reported in the construction industry (BLS). Construction also had the second-highest incidence rate for sprains and strains. Although the industry has made progress since then, injuries and illnesses, including MSDs, continue to because for concern.

The general nature of the special constructional features that are required to provide safety from explosion hazards on machines approved as permissible by the Bureau of Mines is fairly well known to mining men who are at all interested in safety. These requirements are outlined in the schedules under the provisions of which the investigations of such machines are conducted. Also, the method of conducting inspections and tests of such machines has been described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, published in 1929. A more detailed knowledge of the special safety features of a particular machine is often useful and sometimes essential for inspectors, safety engineers, maintenance men, and engineers in selecting machines for a particular application. Three bulletins that give information of this nature have been-published by the bureau, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotives and Power Trucks. Bulletin 343, Permissible Coal-Handling Equipment. Bulletin 382, Permissible Coal-Cutting Equipment. Report of Investigations 3309, Permissible Electrically Operated Air Compressors, which contains similar information, was issued in August 1936, and a Report of Investigations 3326, Permissible Electrically Operated Room Hoists, was issued in January 1937. Thus, the present paper is the third to give detailed information concerning permissible machines of types not included in bulletins, and covers all the rock-dust distributors approved prior to October 1, 1936.

Frictional ignitions are defined as the ignition of a flammable mixture of methane and air that is initiated by frictional heating. Ignitions created through the addition of energy from open flames and exposed electrical circuits are not included in this analysis. Energy released in a roof fall that creates a spark and ignites a methane mixture would be considered a frictional ignition. Frictional ignitions represent the majority of all ignitions in underground coal mines. Over the study period of 1983 to 2005, a total of 1993 ignitions were reported in underground bituminous coal mines in the United States, of which 1589 were frictional ignitions. Reportable ignitions to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are any unintentional occurrences of flame underground regardless of duration. Frictional ignitions were reported in 155 mines and 13 states. Continuous miners represented the largest source for frictional ignitions with 1090 (68.6% of all frictional ignitions). Longwall mining operations represented the highest concentration of frictional ignitions during this study period with 1365 frictional ignitions (85.9% of all frictional ignitions). The 17 mines with the most frictional ignitions were all longwall mining operations and had 1130 frictional ignitions (307 from the shearer) that represented 71.1% of the total. In 1983, mines with frictional ignitions represented 6.9% of operating underground mines and 36.6% of total underground coal production. The percentage of operating underground mines with frictional ignitions and their total production has increased steadily and in 2005 represented 9.8% of active mines and 46.2% of underground coal production. The three coalbeds with the highest number of frictional ignitions (Blue Creek, Pittsburgh No 8, and Pocahontas No 3) had 1049 ignitions that represented 66.0% of all frictional ignitions. The three states with the highest number of frictional ignitions were Alabama (710), Virginia (247), and Pennsylvania (242) that represented 75.5% of the total. Frictional ignitions peaked in 1991 with a high of 114. In 2005, only 34 frictional ignitions were reported. If only frictional ignitions that occur at the face are considered, there have been no fatalities since 1983. Since this time, there were 33 ignitions that caused 53 workers to lose a total of 2912 working days. When including ground falls, then there have been four frictional ignitions with one incident causing two fatalities and injuring eight workers. From 1983-1991, underground productivity and the number of frictional ignitions increased. However, productivity continued to increase from 1991-2000 while total frictional ignitions fell, thereby disproving this connection between productivity and frequency of frictional ignitions. Ninety percent of all frictional ignitions occurred in underground coal mines that liberated more than 393 L/s (1.2 MMcfd million cubic feet per day) of methane through the main ventilation system. Although methane production is not the determining factor for the occurrence of frictional ignitions, it is a good indicator of the anticipated frequency.

This paper describes the design, the first three years of operation and optimization of a large, single stage SAG mill at Minera Yanacocha?s Gold Mill facility located in northern Peru. The Gold Mill was commissioned in March 2008 with a 32? x 32? EGL, 16.5MW single stage SAG mill, to process 5 million tonnes per annum high grade oxide Au/Ag ore. Operational control, feed size distribution, grinding media, mill liner, grate and pulp lifter optimisation have allowed the mill to operate 15-30% above design throughput rates, but with a product P80 coarser than design. As part of the optimization, full grinding circuit surveys were conducted. Historical operating data and survey data were analyzed and used to evaluate possible circuit changes and determine alternative operating strategies. A number of changes were implemented which allowed the SAG mill to operate similarly to a large ball mill and achieve finer mill product that was closer to design. This paper summarizes life to date data analysis and improvements made by Minera Yanacocha as well as the grinding circuit optimisation study conducted by Metso Process Technology and Innovation.

The current status of metal hydride alloys for NiMH batteries was systematically reviewed. Extensive application-oriented research and development has successfully made the NiMH battery an important part, with growing potential, among rechargeable batteries. The rare earth based metal hydrides (AB5) have been considered the best alloy material for use in the negative electrode in NiMH batteries. However, being in demand for high performance electronic markets, the still young NiMH industry is facing serious technical challenges in developing better products. Among all the efforts to respond to the challenges, advanced AF3, alloys are in great demand: the capacity enhancement race requires new or improved alloys possessing higher volumetric capacity; price competition mandates MH materials with low cost; high performance under severe service environments calls for alloys with high corrosion resistance when subjected to electrochemical cycling; and finally, high power service requires the negative electrode to deliver current at high rates.

"INTRODUCTION Santiago de Chile is a 7 million inhabitant city which has a 103 Km long subway network operated since 1975 by Metro S.A. This network is used on a daily basis by 2.3 million people. In 2012 Metro S.A. started the biggest enlargement of the network in its history, through the design and construction of the new Line 3 (21.7 Km) and Line 6 (16.5 Km). The detailed engineering contract for civil underground works of Line 6 (L6) was awarded to the Consortium integrated by ZAÑARTU Ingenieros Consultores and GEOCONTROL S.A., in which Geocontrol was in charge of the design of 11 stations and 14.5 Km of tunnel. L6 crosses L3 in Ñuble and Ñuñoa Station, L2 at Franklin Station and ends, intersecting L1, at Los Leones Station as shown in Figure 1. LOS LEONES STATION DESIGN Location and Characteristics Los Leones Station is placed at the North end of the L6, next to the same named station of the L1 and it has four construction units, as is shown in Figure 2: I. Access Shaft (49 m x 47 m). II. Access Gallery (34 m long). III. Station Tunnel (120 m long). IV. Connection Gallery with L1 (104 m long). A singular feature of Los Leones is that the western section of the station tunnel, built from the access gallery, is located below an underground parking lot which is located in Providencia Avenue, as shown in Figure 3. It is important to highlight that the distance between the vault of Los Leones Station Tunnel and the foundations of the underground parking lot is only 6 m."

Since the last Iron Control in Hydrometallurgy Symposium in Montreal in 1996, the Kokkola zinc plant has increased its capacity from 175,000 t/y to 280,000 t/y by installing an atmospheric concentrate leaching process, which has also affected iron control in the leaching circuit. Major changes have been made at the jarosite residue pond; a subterranean plastic wall reinforced with bentonite and cement has been built around the pond. A new water collecting system that is used for groundwater level control in the pond area was installed. With these two investments in the pond area, it is now possible to prevent any seepage flow from the pond into the surrounding environment. Water pumped from the residue pond is treated in the water treatment plant. This paper describes the behavior of iron in Kokkola's current leaching processes. The treatment of the jarosite, the improvements to the residue pond and the water treatment process are also described.

"Electric pulse fragmentation (EPF) is an innovative technology that uses high-voltage pulsed power (HVPP) for the selective comminution of the treated material. Highly energetic electrical pulses are used to fracture rocks at mineral grain boundaries, resulting in extensive micro-cracks and/or complete fragmentation of the processed particles depending on the applied energy. In this study, the EPF technology was applied to a low-grade schist ore containing cassiterite, in order to investigate its influence on the selectivity of the fragmentation. The impact of EPF on subsequent comminution steps was studied by combining either the EPF technology or jaw crushing (used here as conventional crushing) with subsequent impact crushing. The results confirmed the potential of the EPF treatment for a selective fragmentation of the schist ore. This gave the potential advantages of reducing the total energy consumption in the comminution circuit and of improving the recovery of cassiterite during concentration processes. INTRODUCTION The rise in the world consumption of metals combined with the depletion of most of the high-grade ore reserves leads to an increased need to process ores of lower grade, with a more complex mineralogy. To recover the valuable minerals contained in such ores, fine grinding is required, but this process has high energy requirements and leads to the production of a large amounts of fines, which can impede the performance of later concentration processes such as gravimetric separation and flotation. Addressing this issue is a major challenge for the mining industry. Selective comminution methods have the potential to significantly contribute to the profitable exploitation of these low-grade ores by generating cracks specifically at mineral grain boundaries rather than randomly as in a conventional mechanical comminution system. This allows the liberation of valuable components from the feed material without overgrinding, i.e. this prevents unnecessary size reduction of already liberated grains, which leads to a reduction in production of fines and in energy consumption. In addition, rock not fragmented by the process are usually weakened by the dense fracture network generated, which increases grindability of the rock (Wang et al., 2011)."

"New developments are required day by day. On the one hand site to improve the actual situation, on the other hand site to create the future and to ensure that future demands can be fulfilled. This requires for instance the development of technical support systems, which enable a more constant and quality ensured installation of special foundation products like piles. As part of the quality control, real time installation control of the production process, data transfer and reporting systems become more and more important ensuring the five dimensions of a jobsite. That means not only the three well known dimensions (width, height, depth) are cover, but also the dimension of time and money. Beside small, but important, details, also the demand of extending the use of methodologies in terms of getting deeper or allow their use in various soil conditions require the development of new tools and equipment. Therefore, the paper will describe some of these new approaches and activities required for these new developments. It will describe also the main equipment which will be needed to execute these works under the various conditionsINTRODUCTIONNew developments are required day by day. Either to improve the actual situation, or to create the future and to ensure that future demands can be fulfilled. Therefore, there is an increasing demand for the development of e.g. “Little Helpers”. “Little helpers” are for example technical support systems, which enable a more constant and quality ensured installation of special foundation products like piles, for example an assistance system like the later explained “drilling” assistant. In a second part the focus will be given to new approaches for soil mixing application. Clay sorbents from the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin represent important but still some-what neglected accessory raw material. Submitted paper is concerned with relation between mineral structure, sorptive efficiency and reclamation exploitation of these rocks. Characters and localities of main clay sorbents from the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin are shortly evaluated in an introduction. In next part, methodology of mineralogy survey for these accessory raw materials is stated, it is based on diffract analyse with D 5000 Siemens X-ray diffracto-meter. At the conclusion results are stated of mineralogy analyses from several clay sorbents. The determination of the zeolite and montmorillonite localities was accentuated. The paper presents also possibilities of practical clay sorbents utilization, especially by reclamation works.

The nickel-cobalt sulphides produced from limonitic laterite ores by Moa Nickel S.A. in Cuba are refined at the Corefco nickel-cobalt refinery in Canada. Significant economic implications are associated with the refining of precipitated sulphides containing elevated iron contents. The Moa Nickel S.A. operations encompass laterite mining, high pressure acid leaching (H PAL), and ultimately, precipitation of a mixed sulphide product. These processes are reviewed as they pertain to the control of iron and the formation of a mixed sulphide containing nominally 55% Ni, 5% Co and 1% Fe. The contributors to the iron content of the mixed sulphide product are reviewed; the major contributors are the HPAL operation and sulphide precipitation. The precipitation of iron during sulphide precipitation is influenced by the solution acidity, the iron and copper concentrations in the feed solution, and the presence of laterite leach solids. The significance of the copper concentration of the sulphide precipitation solutions is manifested by both physical and chemical modifications of the sulphide precipitates, presumably through the formation of fine copper sulfide seed particles.

Tension-torque relationships were investigated *n a coal mine for bath standard 5/8 in. (16 mm) bolts and a vibrating wire instrumented bolt, using conventional and controlled installation techniques. The instrumented bolts differed from the standard bolts by their head size and hole preparation procedures. The controlled installation technique developed by the U. S. Bureau of Nines (USBN) involved using hardened washers and lubrication in the bolt assembly, and maintaining a minimum thrust level during bolt installations. The object of this study was to determine the tension to torque ratio (lb/ft-lbs; for standard bolts and instrumented bolts for both conventional and controlled installation techniques, and to modify the bolt assembly so that the ratios would be equal for the instrumented and standard bolts for both installation techniques. It was shown that the instrumented bolts installed in faced holes had a similar tension torque ratio td that of standard 5/8 in. (16 mm) bolts installed in unfaced holes for each installation technique, and thus they were representative of other uninstrumentea bolts. This was achieved by evaluating the influence of several factors oh the relationship, including: facing the hale surface, introducing washers and lubrication in the bolt assembly, and applying different levels of thrust at installation due to bolter operator practice. The tension to torque ratio fur conventional bolts was only 21 (lb/ft-lb) for the coal mine, resulting in an installation tension of 4000 lbs (17.8 kg) with the typical installation torque of 150 to 400 ft-lb. This tension level was approximately 50 percent of the required bolt tension, and thus, it was concluded that torque standards are not sufficient to assure adequate bolt tension. .he low tension levels were due to the particular wait hardware in use, operator practice, and bolt fencing.

RECORD production of cement, clays, salt, sand and gravel, and stone highlighted the mineral industry of the State in 1956. Coal and iron-ore production declined owing to increased imports of foreign iron ore and decreased demand for metallurgical coke. Alabama ranked second in production of bauxite and of native asphalt, and third in output of iron ore. New developments in the State included the Citronelle oilfield and its 97 wells, which more than doubled the total production of petroleum compared with 1955. There is no question about the impetus that field has given to the oil and gas industry in Alabama, now 13 years old. The State's 4 oilfields are in southwest Alabama and its 1 gasfield is in Marion County, in the Warrior coal basin.
