AMAX's Sleeper Mine uses conventional cyanidation milling and heap leaching techniques to produce gold. Since milling operations commenced in March 1986, average ore processing rates have improved from the design rate of 455 tonnes per day to more than 720 tonnes per day. Heap leaching was added to the process facilities in September 1986 at a design rate of 1,500 tonnes per day, and current heap leaching rates exceed 2,680 tonnes per day. Presented are descriptions of the Sleeper processing facilities with emphasis on the crushing and grinding circuits, a review of the selection of crushing and grinding equipment, and a summary of operating performance during the first 16 months of operations.

Mining and processing of bastnaesite ore, (Ln)CO3F, for lanthanides extraction is investigated in this paper. This series of elements proved to be applicable for a wide range of high-tech uses. In spite of the strategic importance of lanthanides, no LCA and energy analyses of their extraction have ever been published. We perform in this paper a Life Cycle Assessment of the Lanthanide production cycle, based on available database and literature data from Mountain Pass mine (USA) and other worldwide mining and processing sites, most of which in China. We investigated three main steps: mining, milling (including transport, grinding and drying), and flotation (for lanthanide chloride extraction). We do not investigate here the separation of pure oxides from lanthanide chloride, a compound which is also marketed as such. The conventional LCA was integrated by means of energy and emergy evaluations, aimed at investigating respectively the global energy cost and the environmental sustainability of the process. Indicators of material intensity, thermodynamic efficiency, and environmental impact (including LCA and ecological footprint impact categories) are calculated and discussed.

Computer models of metallurgical circuits are extensively utilised in design, and prediction of overall plant separation performance. As always, in the final optimised flowsheet design there is a compromise between the recovery of values and grade of the circuit output. This paper mathematically examines various circuit options for the generation of a heavy mineral concentrate from a generic mineral sands wet concentrator plant. Based on data derived from testwork, any particular mineral sand has a unique release curve describing the separation performance of the heavy mineral suite. Models are constructed that combine particular stage output streams as feed to other stages in various configurations. The ramifications of each option are discussed and reasons why one particular option is selected over the others examined.

The Henderson mine is an underground panel-caving molybdenum mine located in the mountains of central Colorado. All development and primary production operations are performed using diesel-powered, rubber-tired mobile equipment. The growth in manpower and equipment was rapid in the five years following the July 1976 start-up, reaching about 250 machines and 2000 people to produce 9 Mt/a (10 million stpy) of ore. However, due to dramatic improvements in productivity, production is currently at a rate of 8.1 Mt/a (9 million stpy) with about 570 people and a much smaller equipment fleet. The mine's high degree of mechanization and accompanying maintenance costs have focused increased attention on the maintenance function as a cost center with potential for improvement. To realize some of that potential, several approaches to equipment maintenance have been adopted. None of these stand alone effectively, though, and their success relies on their working together in the overall program. The approaches that characterize the equipment mainte¬nance philosophy at Henderson are described here. Preventive maintenance The value of preventive maintenance as an alternative to breakdown or emergency repair is widely accepted in industry. When production began in 1976, few people at Henderson had experience maintaining diesel-powered, rubber-tired equipment. Other company operations such as its previous Urad operation and the Climax molybdenum mine near Leadville, CO used rail and Blusher technology. A maintenance consultant was hired to establish a formal preventive mainte¬nance program. The initial program contained four different preventive maintenance services, "A," "B," "C," and "D." Each was keyed to a different operating interval. • "A" service was the most frequent. It was a quick, general inspection and greasing of all fittings. •"B" service added a more detailed inspection. • "C" service included changing all filters and most fluids, such as engine oil. • "D" service was originally designed as a comprehensive inspection and testing of major component systems over a period of 24 hours during which the equipment was removed from operation. It was believed that most problems uncovered by the inspection could be reported and scheduled for repair at some later date, with only critical repairs being done during the service. In addition to these scheduled preventive maintenance services, a schedlle of minor and major rebuilds at intervals of 2500 to 5000 hours was established.

With the aim to reduce the hot metal production cost, ArcelorMittal Gent decided to integrate more ores with finer particle size distribution in the raw material mix for the production of blast furnace sinter. As a consequence of such an increase of finer material in the sinter raw mix, the sinter machine productivity and the quality of the sinter are affected. In order to compensate this impact, modern granulation technology can be employed. Within this context, ArcelorMittal Gent has invested in a vertical intensive mixer. The equipment was placed before the existing drums, with a function of “mixer”, whereas the drums are fully optimised for the nodulizing process. The paper presents the results of the industrial operation during the commissioning phase of the new equipment. Gradually increasing the proportion of fine material in the sinter raw mix has made it possible to compare the performances of the old system using drums for mixing and pelletizing with the new system using an intensive mixer combined with a nodulizing.

En el Perú existen 7 cable-carriles en funcionamiento, de los cuales la mayoría son bicables, cuyos baldes están suspendidos y son jalados por medio de un cable de tracción sobre un cable estacionario. En este aspecto, el objeto del estudio describe el empleo de los mismos en Cerro de Pasco Corporation, su historiografía, costos, procesos, instalaciones y el peso. Así, es menester conocer que dos de los más grandes bi-cablecarriles se encuentran en Mahr Tunnel de la Cerro de Paseo Corporation que conecta la mina de San Cristóbal con la Concentradora de Mahr Tunnel, mientras que el otro está en Quiruvilca, propiedad de la Northern Perú. También hay otros cablecarriles en Tamboraque, Atacocha, en las minas de San Luis y en la fundición de La Oroya. De otro lado, en 1864 se dispuso de parte de la Corporación, la instalación de un mono cablecarril para conectar la mina de Yauricocha con un lugar llamado Chaucha, el cual era el terminal de la línea del tren de Chaucha a Pachacayo. Siendo desde entonces, el único mono-cablecarril de la Cerro de Pasco Corporation, situado en Perú, mientras que los dos restantes pertenecen a la Reynolds Metal Co de Jamaica, y el otro a una mina canadiense, respectivamente. Asimismo esta cablecarril acarrea 48 toneladas de mineral por hora y permite ahorrar el costo de acarreo de madera por camión sobre los caminos de Chaucha a Yauricocha, aunque surgieron algunos defectos con el desprendimiento de los baldes transportadores. This report covers the area producing from limes and sands of Pennsylvanian age, roughly embracing the territory between the Red River on the north and the Llano Mountains on the south, and between Fort Worth on the east and Abilene on the west. It includes Archer, Cooke, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger, Clay, Baylor and Foard counties in the North Central Texas or Red River Basin area, and Brown, Callahan Coleman, Comanche, Eastland, Erath, Palo Pinto, Stephens, Shackel-ford, Throckmorton, Young and Jack counties in the West Central Texas area. Furthermore, it includes a brief review of development in Jones, Runnels, Haskell and Fisher counties. North Central and West Central Texas during the year 1928 produced an approximate total of 50,948,7461 bbl. or oil. This represents a decrease of approximately 7,720,250 bbl. under 1927 total production. This decrease was due to a slump in production in Brown, Archer, Wichita, Stephens and Cooke counties. Brown County showed the greatest decrease. The 1928 prodction in this county was approximately 4,500,000 bbl. less than the 1927 production. Gross production during 1929 in the North and West Central Texas area can be expected to be lower than in the year 1928. Only one county showed a considerable increase in production. Wilbarger County production increased approximately 3,000,000 bbl. during 1928. Its daily average increased from 9000 bbl. in April to 36,000 bbl. in August. At the close of 1928 it was averaging close to 32,000 bbl. daily. Drilling activity in North and West Central Texas during 1928 showed but a slight increase in completions. The total number of completions during 1928 was 3902, of which 2094 (53 per cent.) were producers, as compared to 3805 completions and 2112 (56 per cent.) producers during 1927. Brown, Young, Wichita, Archer and Wilbarger counties were the leaders in development. The outstanding discoveries for the districts were the Consolidated pool, extensions in the Greyback pool of Wilbarger County, and the Stephens pool, Fisher County.

"The energy consumption of copper production by electrowinning, generally represents more than 1/4 of the total energy requirement in hydrometallurgical traditional process (roasting, leaching, purification and electrowinning). The considerable saving can be achieved just in this step that requires about 2.2 kWhlkg of the produced copper. To save energy the cell voltage, or more appropriately its anodic component, can be reduced: that is because the anodic voltage represents the main component of cell voltage and so it is largely responsible for the excessive energy consumption in copper sulphate electrowinning.In this work some ways are studied to lower the anodic voltage. First the cobalt ions were added to the sulphate solution in order to study the catalytic effect on oxygen discharge. Then lead alloys anodes (Pb-Ag, Pb-Sb-Ag and Pb-Ca) were used to promote a better oxygen evolution as a result of a different anodic surface. Their behaviour was compared with the PbSb traditional ones. Finally, as already pointed out by several authors for zinc electrowinning, ethylene glycol was employed as anodic depolariser in order to verify its effectiveness in the case of copper electrowinning. By combining all the above-mentioned ways, energy saving ranging from 20% to 27% is achieved.All the tests were carried out on a laboratory pilot-plant for long time to simulate the industrial conditions. The obtained copper deposits were observed by SEM to highlight their morphology."

The equilibrium distribution ratios of sulfur between molten copper and CaO-fluxes containing caF2 and caC12 were determined in the range of 1300° to 1400° C under carbon monoxide. The rate of approach to equilibrium is rapid and increases with increasing CaCll concentration. In CaO-CaFl-CaCl2 fluxes, the distribution ratio varies in a complex way with temperature and CaFl concentration. In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arimco Mining Corporation's (CAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au?Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in the country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon a region previously unassociated with porphyry-style mineralization. Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.41 % copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37,000 hectare FTAA has identified a further sixteen potential porphyry-related deposits. A new mining law was passed in March 1995 but prior to that CAMC had the first Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement (FTAA) granted by the Philippine government allowing 100% foreign ownership of mining projects.

Introduction O WING to the mineral discoveries which have recently been made in the Great Bear Lake region and the possibility of the need for fuel for transportation and development, it seems.timely ro review available information regarding the oil prospects in the vicinity of Great Slave lake and Mackenzie river, where a vast area is underlain by Palreozoic and younger sediments that undoubtedly are petroliferous. Exploratory surveys were carried out in this area by the Geological Survey and others in the latter part of the 19th century, but it was not until 1920, when drilling for oil actually began, that any serious attention was paid to the oil prospects. This is readily accounted for by the remoteness of the region, the lack of quick transportation facilities, and the shore summer season. Numerous and copious oil seepages had been reported, however, from widely separated localities, and interest was stimulated by the knowledge that these occurred in Devonian strata which had given a remarkable record of sustained production of high-grade oil in the oil-fields of southwestern Ontario. . Accordingly, during the four years 1920 to 1923, inclusive, several parties sent out by the Geological Survey made as thorough an investigation of various parts of the area as seemed warranted at that time, and from these surveys most of our information regarding the details of the stratigraphy is derived. In such a large area, it is inevitable that the lithology and thickness of rocks of the same age would show wide variations, and hence it should be recognized that conditions as regards oil prospects in the vicinity of the west end of Great Slave lake are quite distinct from those that occur near Fort Norman, 400 miles farther to the northwest, and these again are in all probability quite different from those in the less well known Arctic Red River area, 250 to 300 miles still farther north.

"No. 9 Walton is a new high-rise condominium building located in the Gold Coast area of Chicago. The adjacent building, Walton on the Park, featured 4 levels of below grade parking and utilized a secant pile wall with integral drilled shafts to support the exterior columns. The earth retention system (ERS) for No. 9 Walton also employed a secant pile wall in combination with drilled shafts. The excavation into the soft Chicago clays varied in depth from 9.75 m to 12.5 m (32 feet to 41 feet) below grade. The temporary excavation support used internal braces from the new secant piles to the existing foundation system of Walton on the Park to provide earth retention. Engineering teams for both projects worked together to design the bracing scheme and connections to ensure that the new excavation and internal bracing would not overstress any elements of the existing structure. Further complicating the project, immediately to the west of the project was a historic church founded on shallow spread footings which required underpinning to minimize movements.The project involved three different building owners, small values for acceptable wall movement, an extensive monitoring program and the challenges of merging two earth retention systems. The subsurface conditions at the site, the adjacent structures, the excavation, and the performance are described. A summary of the design methods and the expected movements of the ERS are discussed, and the performance monitoring system is described. Overall, the ERS performed better than expected with less than 1 inch of measured lateral wall movement during and after the excavation was completed. Measured performance of the ERS is compared to the predicted performance and to the performance requirements for the project.INTRODUCTIONNo. 9 Walton is a new high-rise condominium building in Chicago located in the Gold Coast. The building has 3 levels of below grade parking and 36 levels of living space above grade. Developers originally slated the project to be Phase 2 of the Walton on the Park development built in the mid 2000’s, using portions of the existing foundation system for development of the new structure. However, the housing market crash in 2007 prompted cancellation of Phase 2 of the Walton on the Park development. The property sat undeveloped until 2015 when design and construction for No. 9 Walton began under a new development and design team. The project team completed foundation excavation and below grade structures in 2016 with the first units of the building turned over to new homeowners in 2017.The structural design for No. 9 Walton consisted of reinforced concrete columns and slabs, supported laterally by a heavily reinforced concrete central core. Drilled shafts to rock supported the interior columns and core with the exterior columns and foundations integrally included in the earth retention system. The structure had a below-grade footprint of approximately 1,490 m2 (16,000 ft2). The general excavation extended 9.75 m to 12.5 m (32 feet to 41 feet) below street level with the deepest portions at the central building core mat foundation."

Rock mechanics models are “data-limited,” i.e., one seldom knows enough about a rock mass to use computational models unambiguously. Statistical methods, however, are capable of being applied where there are good data but a limited understanding of certain natural phenomena, such as the creep of rock salt or elevated risk domains associated with violent failure of strata commonly referred to as coal bumps and coal bursts. Important to these evaluations are (1) having statistically valid data collected consistently and (2) incorporation of analytical calculations for quantifying geologic, mining and particularly geotechnical variables. By combining the strength of the statistical and analytical models, an improved “hybrid” model is created and utilized. To demonstrate the use of hybrid statistical-analytical techniques in rock mechanics problems, three case studies are used. The first case study involves a historic examination of a nuclear waste repository in rock salt, where mathematical models are built using excavation con- vergence data to identify significant variables and estimate future deformation and stability. This case study uses the convergence rate at up to 121 locations of different ages and geometries using monitoring data over the facilities' footprint excavated through 1998. The second case study focuses on ongoing analysis of coal burst mechanics and associated factors. Within the last three decades, a hybrid statistical-analytical methodology has been applied for identifying significant factors affecting coal bursts. This final hybrid model utilizes data from 30 case studies from Utah, Colorado, Kentucky, and other Eastern U.S. mines providing predictive capability for the entire United States coal fields. The last case study is the assessment of Castlegate Sandstone escarpment stability using historic data collected over 17,000-ft of sandstone escarpment exposure in the vicinity of longwall operations in Utah. Results from all three case studies are used for demonstrating the utility of the method in solving ground control problems.

1. The following is an abridgment of a recent report made by the author, covering an investigation of: (A) The necessary use of natural-gas compressors; (B) The effect of gas compressors on natural-gas field operating conditions in Ohio, with special reference to the working pressure relations of gas wells of one company discharging by natural rock-pressure flow without compressors, and adjacent wells of other companies, discharging into intake lines to gas-compressing stations. Tests were made at 107 different places in the counties of fairfield, Licking and Knox, Ohio, which required 7,000 miles of automobile driving, and consumed 6 months' time. 2. A proper conception of the necessary use and effect of natural-gas compressors in natural-gas production necessitates a clear understanding of certain fundamental definitions and judicial doctrines, which are given herein. 3. Gas is a fluid composed of a large number of molecules which are vehicles of energy continually in motion, and havingan inherent tendency to get farther and farther apart. The range of motion of the molecules is limited only by the volume of the closed containing vessel in which they constantly move to and fro. The most distinguishing characteristic of gas is its universal property of completely filling an inclosed space. 4. Gas pressure is the result of the combined efforts of all the moving molecules in the mass trying to get farther and farther apart, that is, a mass of gas inclosed in a vessel expands and fills it, and being restrained from further expansion, it exercises a pressure against the walls of the vessel. This pressure is the same in all directions on equal areas of surface, as shown in Fig. 1. IN designing a pocket instrument whereby any given horizontal or vertical angle may be closely approximated, the following points should be kept in view, if general utility is aimed at 1. The instrument should be light and compact, so that it can be carried in the pocket, or in a sling. 2. It should be capable of observing any angle whatever, horizontal or vertical. 3. Since time is often an important consideration in making a preliminary survey, it should be capable of giving the horizontal and vertical angle at one observation. I do not know of any instrument that will fulfill these requirements, except the one here described. Where the depression- or elevation-angle of the distant object, whose bearing is required, exceeds 50 or 60 degrees, it becomes difficult or impossible with a prismatic compass, for instance, to obtain accurate results; and since it frequently happens, particularly in mining, that much work requires to be done beyond that limit, it is obvious that an instrument which can be used to observe a high angle just as easily as a low one, if not absolutely a necessity, will at least be a great convenience. How this " pocket transit " attains to the required degree of universality will be understood from the diagram, Fig. 1, in which B is a beveled, graduated circle, attached to and freely revolving about the center of the magnet A. Light falling on B is reflected through a window in F (the compass-box), along the line AC, and is again reflected back to the eye at D by the prism C. Friction rock stabilisers, commonly termed ‘Split Sets’, friction rock bolts, or continuous friction coupled bolts are the most widely used rock bolt in the Australian underground metalliferous industry. Historically, they were used for temporary reinforcement, mainly within ore development. However, their use as primary reinforcement has grown with the demand for higher development rates at lower costs. The introduction of galvanisation has increased their longevity and pattern bolting in conjunction with weld mesh, specifically made for use in development headings, has allowed the use of friction rock stabilisers to increase rapidly with development jumbo’s undertaking the installation. The installation of friction rock stabilisers appears to be deceptively simple, particularly when compared to resin encapsulated bolts. The friction rock stabilisers capacity is a function of the borehole parameters, rock mass quality/strength, the bolt dimensions and steel quality, and lastly and perhaps the most important the operator skill levels. However, as in industry we are still seeing common occurrences of friction rock stabilisers not reaching their design pull test capacity. Pull testing the friction rock stabilisers is used to verify the installation of the design capacity. It involves loading the collar of the bolt with a hydraulic ram until the design load is reached or the bolt slips. Pull tests often show failure rates of 20 per cent or higher. This is despite over 40 years of use and with millions of units installed annually. Such high failure rates would suggest there remain issues with the quality of installation. Ground support quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) programs are needed in combination with operator training to ensure that pull test failure rates are kept as low as practical. However, there are times when despite the QAQC being completed the pull test failure rates increase quite suddenly. When this occurs, it is important to conduct a thorough investigation. These investigations often show there are several factors that are not obvious to personnel installing the bolts. To complete a useful investigation, it must also be done methodically, working through the entire process that includes less obvious factors such as steel quality and the calibration of the hydraulic pull test kit. The aim of the paper is to give mine practitioners an understanding of the complexities of friction rock stabilisers, what QAQC requirements they should be doing on-site, what can go wrong during installation and, if necessary, a process of how to conduct investigations into high friction rock stabiliser pull test failure rates.

Date of Congress: Sept. 20-25, 1915 The Committee on Local Affairs is fortunate in having secured for a period expiring on Oct. 17, an option. on 100 rooms at the Palace, St. Francis. and Fairmont hotels, the three leading hotels in San Francisco, with the distinct understanding that, on account of previous engagements whereby the hotels are reserved to their capacity, the rooms must be vacated on Sept. 25, 1915. The rates applying will be $7 per day for the court rooms occupied by two people, or $10 per clay for outside rooms occupied by two people. The outside rooms will face the main thoroughfares at the Palace and will face the city and bay at the Fairmont, which latter is situated oil a high hill. The St. Francis faces an open square and is flanked by main thoroughfares on two sides. If any members desire their reservation to extend either before the 20th or beyond the 25th, the Committee will use its best endeavors to secure such extension in individual cases, in accordance with the indicated wish. The Hotel Bureau in San Francisco is co-operating actively and closely with the. Committee on Local Affairs of the International Engineering Congress and offers the choicest rooms in any of 350 hotels other than the three mentioned above. This Hotel Bureau controls 50,000 rooms in San Francisco, which are all provided with hot and cold water, stationary basins, baths, house telephones, elevators, and bell boy service.

The Camaguey brown iron-ore deposit covers the top of Sari Felipe hill, the nearest point of which lies 14 miles NW. of the city of Camaguey. While there are several low flat-topped hills in the vicinity covered with a more or less continuous mantle of brown iron-ore, the deposit of San Felipe hill is the only one of any size and importance, and the name " San Belipe district" is proposed for the region. The deposit extends in a NW-SE. direction for a distance of about 10 miles, with an average width of 5 miles. The location is shown in Fig. 1, a sketch-map of the eastern part of Cuba. Fig. 2 is a map of the San Felipe district. 2. Description. The district is mentioned by Spencer,' who says: " The Cubitas iron-ore fields are situated from 12 to 15 miles north of Camagueg City, in the province of Camagueg.....Within an area measuring roughly 10 miles east and west and 4 miles north and south, there are several flat-topped mesas rising 300 to 400 ft. above the level of an almost featureless plain which extends for many miles in all directions except toward the north." With the exception of the discrepancy in his statements .as to the distance from Camaguey and the area of the hill, which is over 50 sq. miles, his description is a very good one.
