The history and development of this property is more or less familiar to nearly everyone connected with the mining industry, so that only a brief outline of the more important facts will be given in this article. In 1916, a small pilot mill was constructed by the British Columbia Copper Company at Copper Mountain, and during 1916 and 1917 test work was conducted to determine the possibility of concentrating the ore and also to work out a suitable flow-sheet. In the spring of 1917, the location of a mill site at Allen by, which is about 8,% miles from Copper Mountain, and near the Similkameen river, was decided on, and the designing of a 2,000-ton plant was then worked out by Bradley, Bruff and Labarthe. Early in 1918, the actual construction of the concentrator began, and, after considerable labour difficulties, it was completed in 1920. During this period of construction, the West Kootenay Power Company ran a 60,000-volt power line over from Greenwood, a distance of 102 miles, and also built a sub-station at Allenby to take care of the mine and mill. The concentrator was started up on October 20th, 1920, and ran until December 11th, 1920, a total of 18,354 tons of ore being milled. The results of this short period of operation were encouraging, but, due to tlie prevailing low price of copper and high wages, it was necessary to shut down until a more favourable time. During the latter half of 1923, some work was done on remodelling the mill. This work continued until January 8th, 1924, when it was suspended.

During 1937 a program was begun to mechanize and modernize the then 28-year old Isabella mine of the Weirton Coal Co., which is on the Monongahela River, in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, at one edge of what is generally known as the Coke Region. Weirton Coal Co. is a subsidiary of the National Steel Corporation, and produces metallurgical grade coking coal for the Weirton Steel Co., Weirton, W. Va. Improvements subsequently made included a cleaning plant for washing the entire mine output, shovel-action track-mounted machines for mechanically loading all the coal, universal-type track-mounted cutting and shearing machines, post drills, 8-wheel mine cars of 10 tons capacity, cable-reel gathering locomotives and other auxiliary equipment. This paper presents the factors, reasons and results of decided changes from the mining system generally prevailing in the region, as well as abandonment of selective mining practices in favor of complete seam extraction. Coal-seam Conditions Fig. 1 illustrates the Pittsburgh coal seam on the property. Cover over the seam averages 450 ft., and 675 ft. is the maxi- mum. Main roof varies from very weak to medium strong; usually it disintegrates rapidly on exposure to air. The "wild" coal makes a fairly strong immediate roof if supported by crossbars and if unbroken affords a seal to the main roof. The draw slate is very weak and treacherous. The floor is characterized by numerous irregular bottom rolls, or "horsebacks," protruding from a few inches up to 3 ft. into the coal. Some are soft, but many are hard and flintlike. Although the bottom slate usually is hard, the underlying fire clay causes it to buckle and heave readily with any moderate increase in roof pressure or where damp. As a whole, the bottom is weaker than the main roof. The coal is characterized by numerous closely jointed face and butt cleats and a woody, springy nature when shot, both having a decided influence on face practices. As shown in Fig. I, at both the top and bottom of the main coal seam is a layer of coal of higher ash and sulphur content than the body of coal in the middle. Use of vehicles with electric drive, which could reduce our oil dependence, will depend on lithium-ion batteries. But is there enough lithium? Will we need to import it from a new cartel? Are there other materials with supply constraints? We project the maximum demand for lithium and other materials if electric-drive vehicles expanded their market share rapidly, estimating material demand per vehicle for four battery chemistries. Total demand for the United States is based on market shares from an Argonne scenario that reflects high demand for electric-drive vehicles, and total demand for the rest of the world is based on a similar International Energy Agency scenario. Total material demand is then compared to estimates of production and reserves, and the quantity that could be recovered by recycling, to evaluate the adequacy of supply. We also identify producing countries to examine potential dependencies on unstable regions or future cartels.

Severe disasters have struck Japan in recent years. Following these disasters, construction robots have played important roles in investigation and restoration work in the disaster regions. To be applied in this way, construction robots require many functions according to the purpose of their use in each case. There are clear differences in the functions and usage conditions required by investigation robots and those required by execution robots. These differences will be important when designing and operating construction robots in the future. This report introduces a volcano exploration robot and unmanned execution system as examples of construction robots used for investigations and executions respectively. Based on this, the report organizes important characteristics of construction robots and explains differences in the concepts of disaster investigation robots and disaster restoration robots. Because they are used in harsh natural conditions and do not have any execution functions, efforts are made to clarify the fact that investigation robots have to overcome many problems such as mobility. When a construction robot is used, the scenario of the operation of the construction robot (execution plan) is extremely important, and in addition, it is necessary to clearly define the way it will be used according to the purpose of its use and specification conditions. In a plan for an unmanned execution system, it is possible to mitigate several strict prerequisite conditions by proposing a well-constructed execution plan. For example, the execution efficiency of an unmanned execution system can be improved by effectively using a temporary road.

The Industrial Minerals Milling Section of the Mineral Processing Division has been engaged for the past three years in a study of the separation of minerals, by means of electronic sorting equipment, on the basis of their colour. Considerable knowledge of the subject has been built up. Because the object of this study is application as a means of beneficiation, a number of examples of the separations achieved are presented. Introduction T 0 the mineral collector, the colour of a mineral may be pleasing, even fascinating; to the mineralogist, student or professional, it may also be practical. It serves, to some extent, as a distinguishing feature in many minerals, and helps to fix with reasonable accuracy the identity of a few. It may now become a useful tool of the mineral dresser. The idea of using a difference in colour as a means of separation of one mineral from another is not new. Hand sorting dates back to ancient time. However, the means by which this can be done mechanically was developed only during the past decade. "The tunnel sector is excavated into a rock mass heavily affected by tectonics, defined as a regional fault. The rock around the tunnel support undertakes the non – elastic deformation and gradually detaches from the rest of the non affected rock mass, moving inside of the excavated area and tending to fill up the whole space. The initial solution of using stiff support consisting in double steel ribs I12 with circular shape in the upper part and straight vertical pillars in the lower part has proved to be inadequate. Based on the calculations of the subsidence phenomena and a mathematical model, the proposed alternative support was provided by special circular steel ribs – SG-23 –that allows a limited rib deformation (by relative slip between the arch segments) in order to mobilize the contact between the rock contour and the inner face of the rib - not only for the deformed rib but also for the neighboring ribs. 1. TWO outstanding members of the Institute will be honored at the Annual Meeting this month: Robert Peele, who will accept his election to the small group of Honorary Members; and Clinton Hoadley Crane, president of the St. Joseph Lead Co. and William Lawrence Saunders Medalist for 1936. Eminence in the profession character, interest in Institute activities, and general recognition as a gentleman and a friend by so many people, have contributed to the election of Professor Peele. The Saunders Medal is for "achievement in mining." In awarding it to Mr. Crane the citation reads "For distinguished achievement in the successful development and operation of low-grade lead mines."

Clinton Creek Mine in west-central Yukon produced 0.94 million tonnes of fibre from 15 million tonnes of asbestos ore between 1968 and 1978. The mine closed in 1978. The deposit lies along the margin of a medium sized ultramafic pluton that intrudes schistose and gneissic rocks of the Yukon Metamorphic Complex. Country rocks are metamorphic equivalents of a mixed sedimentary and volcanic assemblage deposited during Precambrian or early Paleozaic time. Movement along the north west-trending Tintina Fault System probably caused the fairly high meromorphic grade that altered the original rocks to schists and gneisses. The ultramafic pluton hosting Clinton Creek Mine is one of several bodies that were emplaced along a deep seated imbricate fault system parallel to the Tintina Trench. Most of rhe intrusions were hydrothermally altered to serpentinite, bur apparently only the one at Clinton Creek contains commercial quantities of asbestos. The Clinton Creek pluton was probably injecred slowly at relatively low temperatures into the crustal rocks as a "mush" that cooled gradually, allowing sufficient time for serpentinization and chrysotile fibre crystallizarion.

OosterveldIn opening the session, the Chairman indicated that the papers and discussions would revolve about quantitative methods of analysis and optimization of various aspects of exploration planning. The five papers would cover a wide range of topics within a general theme of exploration analysis, and it would be appropriate, therefore, to present the. papers as representing a sequential information-gathering process, namely, (i)geochemical and geophysical types of surveying for the location and identification of anomalous zones, (ii) tren¬ching and drilling of the anomalous zones found, and (iii) further refinement of the data for ore reserve calculations and production planning.The first paper, which was presented by Dr W. A. Hodgson, dealt with the optimum spacing between soil sample traverses conducted during geochemical prospecting. The theme of the paper was that the critical sampling interval should be based on the concept of element continuity, and that this interval could be determined by means of a correlogram. Ensuing discussion concerned the probability of the method, designed for areas where dispersion was high, working in localities where dispersion was either low or virtually non-existent. In the latter eases, specific orientation surveys for varying topographic, climatic and geological conditions would possibly be more useful than the preparation of correlograms. A further suggestion was made that cost versus risk should be taken into consideration when deciding upon the spacing between traverses. A balance could be struck by mathematical optimization. If the exploration budget was fixed, then the variance of risk could be minimized.The second paper was a short contribution by Mr C. J. Lenz. Computer-based plotting and evaluation of geochemical prospecting results were carried out because the low cost of analysis in Rhodesia permitted very large volumes of data to be accumulated in mass-coverage operations. Anomalous areas were demarcated within different environments by selecting probability or population boundary values from frequency distributions. In the short discussion which took place it was debated whether the method should be used only in the early high-risk stages of geochemical exploration and whether the introduction of geological bias could influence the actual results of an exploration program."

"Arsenic has been recently quoted at 10 1/2 - 11 cents per pound, an increase over the prevailing price of last fall, when arsenic was cents, as against pre-war prices around 4 cents is evidently a sustained demand for this material. The following statements are intended to summarize briefly some particulars regarding arsenic.Commercial arsenic is the white arsenious oxide (As203). This is the form in which it is generally marketed, as the uses of arsenic demand its industrial application in this form. Arsenic as an element finds rather restricted use in the hardening of lead shot, ere it is to some extent replacing the use of antimony, while white arsenic is employed in a variety of manufacturing processes, chief of which is the manufacture of insecticides and sprays. The poisonous nature of most arsenic compounds, the commonly known ones being paris green and lead arsenate, and its relative cheapness, make arsenic a material suitable for this purpose. The stimulation of agriculture during the war greatly increased the demand for arsenical insecticide. Glass making consumes a large amount of arsenic as it has been impart increased brilliancy to the glass. Crude commercial arsenic is often used to kill weeds along railroad tracks. Arsenious oxide is used also for preserving hides, while the disulphide, AS2S2), finds an application in dehairing hides for the finest grade leather, as it least affects the product. Orpiment (As233), is used in textile dyeing. Wall paints and wall paper formerly consumed considerable arsenic in the form of paris green, but this use has been largely,given up due to the poisonous nature of the dust from the product. Sodium arsenate for a similar reason, is now little used in printing where it had found application. The great objection to arsenical yes and paints is the risk of poisoning from use of the manufactured article. Sodium arsenite is the principal poisonous in¬gredient of many cattle and sheep dips. Arsenic compounds are also used medicinally."

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to determine the slur- ry transport and deposition properties of coal waste. A 188.5-ft pipe test loop was constructed with instruments to measure density, flow, and power and discharge, suction, and differential pressures. A 20-ton sample of Western coal waste was crushed and screened to 100 pct minus 1/2 in. Eight loop tests using this graded waste were run at slurry densities ranging from 1.15 (25 wt-pct solids) to 1.46 (60 wt-pct sol- ids). The resultant friction-pressure gradients ranged from 0.06 to 0.24 ft of water per foot of 4-in standard steel pipe. Particle-size degradation was significant. In a typical loop test lasting 25 min, the minus 200-mesh fraction increased from 19 pct to 34 pct. Deposi- tion tests showed that without the use of a flocculant, the slurries would not dewater when left to stand for 1 week. With flocculant, ad- ditional water was released; however, the settled slurries remained thixotropic. Further testing is necessary to determine their suitabil- ity for use as backfill material in active mines.

With the advent of faster micro-processors, the use of numerical methods to simulate complex fluid dynamic phenomena in three dimensions for use in design has become prevalent in the automotive, and turbo-machinery industries. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method divides the region of interest into small control volumes which form the mesh representing the physical characteristics of the problem, and uses the finite volume method to intergrate the equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and species over each control volume. Recent developments in CFD software expedite mesh generation, and enable the use of unstructured grids, comprised of tetrahedral volumes in three dimensions and triangular areas in two. CFD more accurately represents complex geometries and allows for relative movement of meshes enabling simulation of multiple moving bodies. 'ibis paper presents two examples of how CFD simulation can be used to assess mine and tunnel ventilation problems formerly addressed by application of analytical solutions which were developed assuming ideal incompressible conditions. CFD simulation is used to evaluate the impact of varying the airflow in a descentionally ventilated airway on the layering along the roof of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire. Control of the smoke layer is required to enable safe egress from the vehicle, particularly if the vehicle is for personnel transport, and to ensure control of the fire contaminants throughout the ventilation system. The airflow required to prevent layering against the ventilation direction, calculated from the Bakke and Leach relations (Bakke and Leach, 1962), is compared with the CFD simulation results. An evaluation of the pressures, generated as a vehicle enters a tunnel portal, using CFD simulation, is also presented for unflared and flared portal configurations. These simulation results are compared with predictions derived using an analytical method which assumes one-dimensional and incompressible flow. Results of the CFD simulation are presented in an animated video format. SIMULATION OF BACKLAYERING In designing a ventilation system for a transit tunnel, the ability of the ventilating air to control and prevent backlayering of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire is of prime concern. The buoyant nature of hot smoke causes it to rise relative to the colder, fresh air provided by the ventilation system. If the vehicle fire occurs in a descentionally ventilated tunnel, the smoke may tend to move upgrade in a layer above the incoming ventilation airflow. The layer may become thick enough to engulf a substatntial part of the tunnel cross-section upgrade of the incident that comprises the evacuation route. This effect is termed "backlayering' and it is similar to the development of methane layers in mines for which most studies related to backlayering have been done. Prediction Techniques Analytical A number of studies have been conducted (Bakke and Leach, 1962) to define the characteristics of this phenomena and as a result have produced relations which are used both in the mine and transit ventilation fields to define the air velocities required to control layering. In the transit industry the air velocity required to prevent the backlayering phenomena from occuring during a vehicle fire is called the "critical velocity" (Associated Engineers, 1975) and is dependent upon a number of factors: tunnel height, cross-sectional area and grade; ambient air temperature and density; and the heat release rate of the fire. Common practice in transit ventilation design is to provide an airflow which meets or exceeds the critical velocity. In order to determine whether or not the critical velocity can be achieved with a particular ventilation system, a one-dimensional simulation of the tunnel network is typically performed using programs such as the Subway Environment Simulation program (SES) originally developed in the late 1970's (Associated Engineers, 1980). The results obtained from SES are compared to the critical velocity to determine the adequacy of the ventilation system. Computational Fluid Dynamics For the backlayering simulations, a commercial CFD code which has been used successfully in a wide variety of engineering applications, was used. It provides numerous options for modeling laminar and turbulent flows, multiple turbulence models, definition of multiple species and chemical reactions between them, a variety of boundary conditions (including constant pressure and constant velocity inlets) and the ability to apply user-defined FORTRAN subroutines. It includes the ability to model conductive, convective, and radiative heat transfer. FLUENT also permits the use of "body-fitted coordinates" to match the computational mesh or grid to complex real-world geometries. Computational Fluid Dynamics Model The model developed to simulate the backlayering phenomena is comprised of an airway of rectangular cross-section, 4 meters wide, 4.5 meters high, and 200 meters long. The Federal Bureau of Mines coal-pyrite flotation process has been modi¬fied to produce a concentrated final clean coal slurry underflow that could be dewatered more effectively by filtration or centrifugation. This change was accomplished by redesigning the Bureau's two-stage flotation pilot plant facility and running the second-stage flotation step with undiluted or only partially diluted first stage coal froth concentrate. Results of the pilot plant flotation tests showed that substantial sulfur reduction could be achieved by flotation with undiluted pulp but some dilution is recommended for maximum selectivity. For example, coal-pyrite flotation in slurry of 25 percent solids yielded clean coal products analyzing as low as 0.7 percent pyritic sulfur and froth reject products containing slightly over 3.0 percent pyritic sulfur. In comparison, coal-pyrite flotation with pulp diluted to about 12.5 percent solids yielded clean coal containing as low as 0.4 percent pyritic sulfur and froth reject of 5.6 to 6.7 percent pyritic sulfur. Despite the need for some dilution, it was concluded that excellent coal-¬pyrite flotation selectivity could be achieved without diluting to 6 or 7 per¬cent solids as done in the earlier work. Thus the economics of coal-pyrite flotation would be improved by easing clean coal dewatering problems and by reducing second-stage flotation cell volume requirements.

The run-of-mine coals in the U.S. being fed to coal cleaning plants have become increasingly finer due to the adoption of modern, mechanized mining methods, and economics are dictating that finer fractions, as well as the coarser fractions, be cleaned. Traditional dewatering methods (vacuum disc filters and centrifuges) are proving inadequate for preparing fine refuse for disposal or fine coal product for downstream handling. The Electric Power Research Institute has been supporting research into the nature and limitations of mechanical dewatering, and novel ways of improving it. The efficiency of various silicone-based chemicals at aiding dewatering was investigated, and it was shown that the final moisture content of hydrophilic coals after vacuum Filtration could be reduced by 1 to 5% with up to 40% increase in filtration rate by addition of one of several of these silicones. EPRI also has an on-going program at its Coal Cleaning Test Facility to investigate the performance of the Larox pressure filter in comparison with that of the disc filter and solid bowl centrifuge. While improvements to the dewatering performance currently being obtained in existing operating plants by such means are achieveable, a fundamental study has shown that, regardless of changes in operating conditions, there may be a limit to the lowest cake moisture content attainable by mechanical dewatering of a given sample of coal fines. Determination of this limit for a specific coal would be useful in designing facilities to dry and handle it.

The application of this study is to use helical anchors as a foundation system for small wind tower (1 ? 10 kW) guyed cables. Helical anchors are currently used to anchor guyed cables of telecommunication and electric towers. However, the increased dynamic vibrations a wind turbine adds to the tower and foundation system under working loads, as well as extreme environmental conditions (e.g., straight line winds, ice load or sudden furling shocks), require additional knowledge about the behavior of helical anchors. These field conditions were simulated in this study by instrumenting a working tower with load cells and 3-axis accelerometers to gather data on wind speed and tower response. These tower responses were then transmitted to the helical anchors through an extensive, large-scale testing program that included monitoring the performance of the helical anchor foundation under dynamic loads, subject to natural variations in both wind regimes, precipitation (water level) and variations in helical anchor geometry. This paper specifically discusses the effects of helical anchor geometry on helical anchor performance under long-term dynamic loads.

A test for determining the plugging characteristics of an oil-well injection water has been developed. It consists in measuring changes of the filter rate of a water at constant pressure with cumulative throughput when passing the water through a medium grade sintered glass disk. Application of the test method was made to the water used in the Union Oil Company's experimental water flood of the Chapman zone in the Richfield field, Orange County, Callfornia. This water developed increasing plugging tendencies upon aging, even though the finished water from the plant filter exhibited few such characteristics. The plugging material was found to consist of calcium carbonate, ferric hydroxide, and organic substances that were presumed to be bacterial. Various method of stabilizing this water to prevent the formation of plugging material were attempted. Lowering the pH to approximately 6.4 by injecting carbon dioxide provided a moderately satisfactory means for stabilization but a better method of stabilizing this water was found to be first aging and then filtering. Introduction An experimental water-flood project was started on the Chapman zone of the Richfield field in March 1944 and has been described in a previous paper.' It consists of a single injection well drilled between old producing wells. A water-treating plant using primary alum flocculation, sedimentation and chlorination followed by secondary flocculation, sedimentation and fltration is employed to process the water before in@ion. In all of the water-treating operations, the system is open to the air, and no attempt is made to prevent the loss of carbon dioxide or absorption of oxygen by the water. The clear water is stored in a covered concrete basin and pumped through a Transite line to the suction of a high-pressure pump at the injection well' The high-pressure tubing in the well to the injection zone is cement lined. This report describes the development and application of the test procedure based on the assumption that the plugging properties could be determined by measuring the progressive decrease in flow rate of the water through a porous medium. If the quality of the injection water was good enough so that the plugging action on the porous medium was of small magnitude, it was reasoned that the tendency to impair flow in the formation would not be serious.

A test for determining the plugging characteristics of an oil-well injection water has been developed. It consists in measuring changes of the filter rate of a water at constant pressure with cumulative throughput when passing the water through a medium grade sintered glass disk. Application of the test method was made to the water used in the Union Oil Company's experimental water flood of the Chapman zone in the Richfield field, Orange County, Callfornia. This water developed increasing plugging tendencies upon aging, even though the finished water from the plant filter exhibited few such characteristics. The plugging material was found to consist of calcium carbonate, ferric hydroxide, and organic substances that were presumed to be bacterial. Various method of stabilizing this water to prevent the formation of plugging material were attempted. Lowering the pH to approximately 6.4 by injecting carbon dioxide provided a moderately satisfactory means for stabilization but a better method of stabilizing this water was found to be first aging and then filtering. Introduction An experimental water-flood project was started on the Chapman zone of the Richfield field in March 1944 and has been described in a previous paper.' It consists of a single injection well drilled between old producing wells. A water-treating plant using primary alum flocculation, sedimentation and chlorination followed by secondary flocculation, sedimentation and fltration is employed to process the water before in@ion. In all of the water-treating operations, the system is open to the air, and no attempt is made to prevent the loss of carbon dioxide or absorption of oxygen by the water. The clear water is stored in a covered concrete basin and pumped through a Transite line to the suction of a high-pressure pump at the injection well' The high-pressure tubing in the well to the injection zone is cement lined. The influence of semicharcoal substitution for coke breeze on sintering performance was investigated by pot-grate sintering test. At a fixed fuel ratio, sinter productivity and strength decreased with the substitution increasing from 0 to 100% due to better combustibility. To enhance the utilization efficiency of 100% semicharcoal, sintering parameters (moisture and suction pressure) was adjusted. With the moisture increasing, sinter performance of 100% semicharcoal increased because of the suppression of semicharcoal incomplete combustion. As the moisture further increasing to 9.0%, sinter quality gave rise to a decrease trend. The results also showed that the increase of suction pressure was benefit for the increase of heat transfer rate, leading to the improvement of heat utilization energy. Measures to enhance magnetite oxidation during sintering are discussed based on current understanding of the fundamentals that control the sintering process.

The Los Angeles Metro Eastside Extension light rail project included a 1.5 mile underground segment, which consisted of twin 18'?10" ID tunnels, bored with two EPB-TBMs. One of the major project challenges after the completion of the bored tunnels was the excavation of six cross passages within alluvial geology below the water table and with low ground cover. Sequential excavation methods were employed and this paper details the design, ground treatment, support measures, and construction methods used to mine these cross passages beneath the congested urban streets of the City of Los Angeles.
