Background Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause illness and death by asphyxiation. Although the toxicity of CO is understood, CO exposure can occur from unrecognized sources. On April 2, 2000, a couple and their newborn infant were poisoned by CO migrating through the ground from blasting at a nearby coal strip mine into their home near Kittanning, Armstrong County, PA. They were treated at the hospital and diagnosed with CO poisoning. The infant had a carboxyhemoglobin level of 31%, the father 28%, and the mother 17%. Carboxyhemoglobin is the compound formed in the blood when CO is breathed. Persons not exposed to CO have carboxyhemoglobin levels of 0.3%-0.7%, and cigarette smokers have levels of up to 9%. Following release from the hospital, the family installed a CO detector in the basement of their home with the help of the local fire department. This Technology News briefly describes this incident to help increase awareness of the problem. It is discussed in more detail by Eltschlager et al. [2001]. Figure 1 shows the coal strip mine believed to have generated the CO. The initial suspect for the source of the CO was the furnace in the house. Only later did it become apparent that blasting at the nearby strip mine might be the culprit. A State investigation concluded that CO had migrated approximately 500ft from the blast, through the ground, and into the home. Figure 2 shows the locations and order of blasts at the mine. Initially, the mine did not plan to blast. Overburden generally consisted of weathered shale that could be dug without blasting. However, the mine decided to blast when hard sandstone that could not be dug out was encountered within 3 ft of the coal top. The blasting was intended to break up the sandstone. Blasting was done using bulk ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) in 6.25-in holes 25-30 ft deep on a 16-ft by 16-ft pattern, with charge weights ranging from 17 to 170 lb. The closest blast to the home was 430 ft on April 17, 2000. The distance from the home to the blast area on the day when CO was first reported (March 31, 2000) was 500 ft. Twenty blasts were detonated at the mine between March 7, 2000, and April 20,2000. The blaster was careful to prevent fly rock since another home was only 150 ft away and a garage was 50 ft away. The quantity of explosive used in the blasts was sufficient to break the sandstone, but was less than would normally be used to blast overburden. The holes were typically one-third explosive and two-thirds stemming, with powder factors averaging 0.43 lb/yd3. Additionally, the muck was not immediately excavated after each blast. The heavy confinement on the explosive acted to prevent the typical release of blasting fumes into the atmosphere. Instances of CO migrating from blasts into homes have occurred before, but generally the distances involved were under 150 ft. It is believed that the blast design contributed to the confinement of CO in the ground, and discontinuities in the ground strata facilitated migration toward the residence. Upon inspection of the blast pitwall, a regular system of joints was observed. These joints are oriented roughly from the blast pit toward the house (figures 3-4).Blast-generated CO appears to have been driven into the joint system, displacing the air. When the joint system was saturated, the next succeeding blast pushed the CO into an uncased well next to the house (a high level of CO has been measured in the well shortly after a blast). From there, the CO entered the French drain system and then the basement of the house. The joints are vertical cracks through rock layers that occur on a regular spacing (figure 3). They are most common near valley slopes and are caused when valley walls converge as the stream cuts down through the rock layers. Often called hill seams, they roughly parallel the valley walls, but can curve and split, creating a pathway for gas movement (figure 5). These fractures are often encountered when underground mining proceeds close to outcrop. The system of fractures at the Kittanning blast pit was well developed and provided a path for transmission of CO both through the sandstone and up and through the overlying shales. Blasting engineers should be able to distinguish naturally occurring fractures from blast fractures and note the frequency, development, and orientation of the hill seams and their proximity to occupied houses. The Iluka Resources Ltd Jacinth-Ambrosia heavy mineral sand mine (South Australia) is located in an undisturbed semi-arid landscape consisting of sparse trees, shrubs and grasses. The soil interspaces are covered with biocrusts, a living soil cover also found worldwide in arid regions. Biocrusts are composed of lichens, cyanobacteria, algae, mosses, liverworts, fungi and bacteria, and live on and within the first few millimetres of the soil surface. Biocrust organisms bind soil particles, sequester carbon and many fix atmospheric nitrogen making them important structural and functional components of ecosystems. Despite their important role in ecological processes, biocrusts are susceptible to disturbance; nevertheless they can recover provided sufficient inoculum is present. Cyanobacteria are the early colonisers and they capture atmospheric and landscape resources and establish conditions that subsequent successional seres can capitalise on. Research conducted in countries including China, Spain and South Africa has been focused on methods to either encourage rapid regeneration of cyanobacterial remnants or to introduce new material from cultured cyanobacteria. We have been investigating the extent and diversity of biocrusts across the 4500 ha mine lease and their potential to improve mining rehabilitation outcomes. Approximately 46 per cent of the soil surfaces are colonised with biocrusts and 33 taxa have been identified. Laboratory experiments were designed to mimic massive soil disturbance and treated with a range of water qualities. Within 22 days, treatments irrigated with fresh water were colonised by new cyanobacterial filaments with a mean surface coverage of 65 per cent. Secondary tests revealed that differences in the photosynthetic yield of the crust were dependent on the salinity levels of the irrigation water used. In 2011 this program is expanding from the laboratory into field scale trials designed to assess both the potential and practicalities of up scaling these techniques to provide crushed biocrusts and cyanobacterial bio-inoculum for use in mine rehabilitation.

"Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport underwent a $1.2 billion dollar expansion project centered on the construction of the new Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal. Passenger access between the new International Terminal and the domestic airport facilities is primarily via underground Automated People Mover (APM) trains. Prior to this expansion, the APM tunnel terminated beneath Concourse E, which previously served all international flights. The new International Terminal is located approximately ½-mile from the previous terminus of the APM tunnel.A paper describing the general approach to excavation support for construction of the entire APM tunnel extension from under Concourse E to the new International Terminal was published by two of the authors (Hurley and NeSmith, 2014). One of the features of note of the approach involved the intersection of the proposed new alignment of the APM tunnel extension under Concourse E with the old terminus. Specifically, the new tunnel extension conflicted with the location of the existing Auger Pressure Grouted (APG) piles supporting four columns in Concourse E. This paper presents design and installation details of the micropile underpinning approach used to support the existing columns to allow for the proposed excavation including the cutting and removal of the existing APG piles, while allowing Concourse E to remain in service during construction.PROJECT DETAILSGeneralThe construction of the APM extension required an excavation support system for a 450-ft long, 55-ft deep excavation across Taxiway Dixie and a 900-ft long, 30-ft deep excavation beneath the basement of existing Concourse E. The excavation under Concourse E required both excavation support and support of the existing columns over the proposed excavation zone. A general overview of the work area is shown on Figure 1."

"Agrium’s Canadian Phosphate Business (CPB) is comprised of Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations (KPO) in Northern Ontario, Canada’s only operating phosphate mine, and Redwater Phosphate Operations (RPO) in Alberta, which manufactures the fertilizer from KPO’s concentrate.Production from KPO’s South Pit commenced in 2009 and introduced contaminant problems: high aluminium from crandallite and kaolinite clays. These issues caused a drastic decrease in P2O5 recovery and throughput in both plants. KPO attempted to reduce Al clays by means of aggressive desliming. Meanwhile RPO experienced high amounts of dissolved metals in their feed that are detrimental to fertilizer production.This paper covers the mineralogy of the problem, its impact on contaminant separation at KPO, on RPO’s process and on Agrium’s Canadian Phosphate Business as a whole.Potential solutions to the problem are discussed and analysed, including a process change to deslime high aluminium streams more aggressively and high grade ore flotation, which is atypical at KPO. The latter is a demonstration of the value of communication between the concentrator and the client, as KPO accepted a recovery loss and increased production costs in order to increase overall CPB profits. General lessons learned are discussed, followed by a section on ore blending.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the existence of the Kapuskasing phosphate deposit has been known since the 1970s, it’s only since 1999 that Agrium has been operating the Kapuskasing Phosphate Operations (KPO). The mine consists of three major pits (Center, North and South) from which a mining contractor hauls the apatite ore to the Agrium concentrator. The beneficiation plant processes the ore, separating contaminants such as Fe, Mg and Al which are detrimental to its client, Agrium’s Redwater Phosphate Operations (RPO). In this paper a simple three-layered medium is considered. A circular hole is centrally located in the intermediate layer. The layered sheet is loaded uniaxially perpendicular to the stratification. The Young's modulus of the intermediate layer is lower than that of the outer layers. The stress distribution around the circular hole in a stratified medium is significantly different when compared to the case of a continuous homogeneous medium. The distribution depends upon the ratio of the height of [the] intermediate layer and [the] hole diameter. A comparison of stress the distribution and procedures for preparation and testing of [the] model are given. The potential of the technique is outlined.

Pressure tunnel includes water-supply tunnels and tunnels for hydroelectrical power plants. Their design principles are different from those of water/wastewater/conveyance and transportation tunnels. Though theoretical pressure tunnel design guidelines exist, a comprehensive guide to summarize these guidelines to facilitate the planning and design of a pressure tunnel program is lacking. The purpose of this paper is to fulfill this need. It first provides key pressure tunnel design concepts in hard rock environment; then, it illustrates associated final lining design principles, including the design of un-reinforced concrete lining, steel lining, and reinforced concrete lining. Design diagrams and a flowchart for the reinforced concrete lining design are provided.

West Virginia ranks second in the nation in coal production, surpassed only by Wyoming, and usually accounts for 15 to 20percent of the nation's total annual production. Cod occurs in seams of minable thickness in all but nine of the state's 55 counties. There are two coal- producing regions, the northern field and the southern field. West Virginia coal is mined by both underground and surface methods. Underground mines in West Virginia account for a major portion of its coal production. Surface mines are generally contour operations and, especially in the southern field, are in steep slope areas, with slopes greater than 20 degrees. Many of the surface mines remove multiple seams. Recoverable reserves in West Virginia total in excess of 55 billion tons of bituminous coal. West Virginia's regulatory program was conditionally approved on January 19, 198 1. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved February 23,198 1, with emergency authority granted on August 26,1988.

In this Bureau of Mines study coal and rock dust beds were entrained by airblasts generated by gas explosions at the closed end of a 0.61-m-diameter explosion tunnel, 49.7 m long. The system was designed to simulate entrainment of mine dust deposits by accidental gas explosion at the coal face of nonintersecting mine passageways. Full-scale mine explosion trials confirmed many of the results of the explosion tunnel experiments and indicated several new features of dust entrainment. Dispersal of 20.3-cm-long stepped dust beds located 35 m from the closed end always began during the early portion of the ascending gradient of the first transient airflow (and pressure) wave, and was usually completed before the end of the first quarter-wave period. Bulk quantities of dust were entrained simultaneously by longitudinal regression from the leading edge of the dust bed and by surface lifting of the top layer. Instantaneous threshold air velocities for bulk quantities of coal and rock dust beds in separate, mixed, and layered configurations were in the same range (5 to 30 m/sec) as previously found under steady-state velocity conditions. Selective lifting of coal dust layers from rock dust occurred when the threshold dispersal velocity of coal dust but not of the underlying rock dust was exceeded.

Codelco’s Salvador Project has been operating a block/panel caving mine for more than 50 years. This underground mining method dynamically mixes the ore and dilution. As a result, forecasting grades is difficult and achieving 100 per cent extraction of the reserves is practically impossible. A substantial volume of the ore mixed with dilution becomes remnant ore and remains to be subsequently extracted.A potential open pit mine is under evaluation at Codelco’s Salvador Project, which includes the extraction of remnant ore post-block caving extraction. An effective methodology has been implemented to estimate what is left behind once the underground mine has closed. A new mixing method using the Cellular Automata (Alfaro and Saavedra, 2004) approach has been used to allow estimation of the remnant ore with a sufficient level of confidence to be included as part of the open pit reserve.A remnant block model is created using elements such as in situ block model, drawpoint layouts, historical production records and the drawpoint extraction. Using this information, simulations of the extraction of the mine by month from 1959 to 2019 were completed, using different mixing scenarios and trying to replicate the tonnage and grade extracted.Finally, the remnant block model is categorised using a score card with four inputs to assess the risk of the estimation of this material into a category class (measured, indicated and inferred).CITATION:Villa, D and Farías, F, 2016. Lump ore is one of the key ferrous materials used in the blast furnace ironmaking process, typically accounting for 5–25 per cent of the blast furnace ferrous burden. Like other ferrous materials, the characteristics of lump ore have an important impact on stable operation and productivity of a blast furnace. As the cold burden lands on the top of the hot burden in the furnace and descends, it is inevitably subjected to thermal shock, which will likely lead to breakdown of the lump particles, or decrepitation and affect the gas permeability inside the blast furnace adversely. An ISO decrepitation test has therefore been developed to assess this behaviour of lump ore. However, the results obtained according to the existing standard decrepitation test method vary considerably between laboratories even for the same lump ore. To improve the test procedure of the existing decrepitation test, this paper first discusses the mechanisms leading to decrepitation and then studies the factors affecting lump ore decrepitation. Understanding the key factors affecting lump ore decrepitation is particularly important to improve the existing test procedure that enables researchers to achieve a higher degree of precision when conducting the decrepitation test.CITATION:Lu, L, Adam, M, Hapugoda, S and Kilburn. How the Australasian and Canadian Codes (VALMIN and CIMVal) approach mineral property valuation is described. Brief comment is also made on the International Valuation Standards CommitteeÆs interest in a global valuation standard for Mineral (Extractive) Industries and the South African SAMREC initiatives to adopt a VALMIN-like Code. The conventional tripartite classification of valuation approaches into those that are Market-based, Income-based and Cost-based is outlined. It is best practice to use as many of these approaches as possible (and as many methods as reasonable in the particular circumstances), given the quantity and quality of the data available on the Mineral Asset (which depends upon the state of development of the mineral property). The use of specific methods must satisfy the basic considerations of logic and reasonableness and the purpose of the valuation. The competence, judgement and repute of the valuer are critical factors, since all valuations are time and circumstance specific. What constitutes æMarket ValueÆ in the different jurisdictions is discussed and definitions are given. Challenges facing the globalisation of a VALMIN-type Code for the international Minerals Industry are the influence of real estate valuers and the US jurisdictional idiosyncrasies. This is mainly due to a fixation on real property rights with a preference for using real estate-like comparative sales techniques (Market Approach) to the exclusion of Income-based approaches; a regulatory reluctance in the US to accept that Resources have considerable value; and the International Accounting Standards BoardÆs preference for Historical, rather than Current Value, accounting.

This paper describes the following at the new Advanced Solid Rocket Motor (ASRM) nozzle manufacturing facility, which is being constructed inside an existing manufacturing facility: 1) generalized subsurface conditions, 2) pile load test program and evaluation, 3) pile selection, 4) problems associated with pile driving operations, and 5) production pile installation. The poor subsurface conditions, known and unknown underground obstructions, and work environment inside the existing building, used to manufacture the Space Shuttle external fuel tanks, required special pile installation equipment, procedures, and work schedules to install the economical pile foundation system ahead of schedule and without a lost time accident. GEOTECHNICAL STUDIES In April and May 1990, 16 soil test borings were drilled inside the existing building with a truck-mounted drill rig. The borings extended to depths ranging from 60 to 65 ft (18.3 to 19.8 m) below the floor slab. Typically, the silty and clayey soils were sampled by pushing "undisturbed" Shelby tubes, and the more sandy soils were sampled by driving a Standard Penetration Test (SPT) split-spoon sampler. The unconfined compressive strength, water content, and unit weight of the Shelby tube samples were measured in the laboratory. A geotechnical report was issued in May 1990 presenting the results of the field and laboratory testing and foundation recommendations (Gilbert, 1990).

The purpose of the contract was to develop an improved coal mine dust sampler whose electrical-to-mechanical energy conversion efficiency would be superior to that of the presently available equipment. The electrical to (pressure) X (volume) conversion efficiency directly affects the size and weight of the air samplers. At least half of the mass of present equipment is composed of the rechargeable batteries. Any increase in efficiency will allow this mass to be reduced or the flow rote to be increased.

This paper deals with the third phase of on extensive research on coal-mine ventilation factors. A comprehensive report of the entire work is in course of preparation, but abstracts of the various chapters are being prepared in order to make the results public as rapidly as possible. Parts I and II of this paper were issued Serial 2621 and Serial 2647 of the Bureau of Mines in July and October, 1924. They dealt with the resistance of unobstructed entry and the resistance caused by mine cars in untimbered entry. Description of the Tests After the resistance of unobstructed entry and of mine cars in untimbered entry had been determined by tests in the Experimental Mine, three different types of timbering were installed in the test section and the increased resistance caused by the timbering was determined.

The effects of composition on the mechanical properties and aging characteristics of several alloys in the Ti-V-Cr system, with and without aluminum modifications, were evaluated. Increasing the chromium, vandium, or aluminum content increased the strength of quenched structures with chromium being the most effective strengthener. Appreciable aging response was obtained with low chromium alloys, but high chromium alloys age softened rather than. hardened. High vanadium contents had a similar effect. Aluminum additions shifted the aging behavior toward that observed in lower chromium alloys, enabling high chromium alloys to be age hardened. DURING the course of titanium alloy development many a and a-ß alloys have been evolved to commercial status. However, only one all-ß alloy has achieved this same stature. This is the Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al alloy. It is characterized by a very sluggish ß-phase decomposition reaction such that very slow cooling rates can retain the 0 phase at room temperature. In addition, very high strength levels can be obtained by long-time aging treatments. Combinations of cold or warm working followed by aging produce even further improvements in strength. This paper describes the results of a research program in which the effects of composition on the mechanical properties and aging characteristics of several alloys in the Ti-V-Cr system, with and without aluminum modifications, were evaluated. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Electrolytically refined, high-purity titanium was used as the alloy base for these studies. Iodide chromium, electrolytically refined vanadium granules, and high-purity aluminum sheet were used as alloying additions. The compositions of interest were melted as 250-g ingots in a direct current arc melting furnace under a flowing atmosphere of argon. The ingots were hot forged to 3/4-in.-diam bars, vacuum annealed for 6 hr at 1800°F to reduce residual hydrogen content, and then hot swaged to 1/4-in.-diam rods. Fabrication history, and interstitial analyses after fabrication are given in Table I. All specimens to be heat treated were sealed in Vycor capsules under a partial pressure of argon. Samples used to define the ß transus were quenched from temperatures ranging from 1350° to 1100°F after holding at temperature for 15 min. Samples for aging studies were quenched from above the ß transus temperature and then aged for up to 64 hr at 750°F and for 100 hr at 850°, 900°, and 950°F. The effects of straining prior to aging were also investigated. The results of these studies were used to select the heat treatments for the tensile specimen blanks. Heat treatments of the tensile specimens are described in Table 11. Alloys were aged after solution heat treatment or after solution heat treatment and cold swaging to 50 pct reduction in area. Much progress has been made in understanding the forward process for blast vibration simulation: that is, how to create a resultant seismogram from an empirically determined seed waveform. What has not been successfully investigated to date is the reverse process: Determining the contribution of each borehole to the resultant seismogram. It might seem that these should be two sides of the same coin, but the reverse process is much more complicated. That is because the source, geological path, and receiver contributions must be unraveled and then dissected. If that can be done, a relationship can be developed between the seismic source properties and the explosive interaction with the surrounding rock. This paper presents a first step in the unraveling process, through analysis of blast seismograms using wavelet transforms.

In recent years, Chinese companies have invested billions in Australian mineral exploration, development and processing. In 2008 - 2009 alone, the Foreign Investment Review Board approved $26.4 B of investment. Much of this investment has been by merger and acquisition (M&A) of Australian resources companies. This paper sets out to investigate how Australian CEOs perceive the cultural and institutional challenges in operating Australia mining companies recently acquired by Chinese interests. HofstedeÆs cultural dimensions and institutional theory from management science were used to develop a structured questionnaire, which was subsequently used to conduct telephone interview of the CEOs of six recently acquired mining companies. Analysis of the survey results indicated that, in all cases, few changes were made to the operational management of the Australian companies post-M&A. The three major benefits for Australian companies as a result of the M&A are the ability to; access long-term debt at lower cost; secure finance for growth plans in financially volatile times; and maintain existing management structures. Some perceived negatives involved longer and more convoluted decision-making as a result of Chinese state approval required for investment decisions. The study identified building æGuanxiÆ and an aversion to losing æfaceÆ as important cultural learnings for Australian CEOs. Low-temperature distillation tests at 200°, 350°, and 500° C. were made on a subbituminous coal from Boulder County, Colo., and a subbituminous coal from Weld County, Colo., in connection with a survey of carbonizing properties of American coals4/ and. investigations of their chemical and physical properties.5/ The coal represented by the sample from weld County was reported to give off combustible volatile matter at unusually low temperatures when placed on a fuel bed. The yields of tar and oil and the composition of the gas from this coal, as obtained in the distillation tests, did not confirm this report. These yields and the gas composition of the Weld County coal differed but little from those obtained from the coal from Boulder County. Both coals yielded tar and gas in amounts considered to be normal for coals of their rank.
