An iron operation sought to extend the life of the mine by conducting a major pit pushback in an area close to several public structures and the neighboring town. The result of the pushback would make millions of tonnes of ore available for mining allowing many additional years of taconite mining. This paper discusses the initial development blasts conducted for the pit pushback. For the development blasts, it was determined that no fly rock should leave the mine site and that the blast vibrations should be as low as possible, but specifically under 19 mm/s (0.75 in/s) at a nearby sewage treatment plant. One issue complicating the blast design was the variation in hole depth within any given blast. For the initial sinking shot, the hole depths varied from 6.4 m (21 ft) to 12.5 m (41 ft). In the subsequent blasts the hole depths within each blast could vary up to 5.8 m (19 ft). Various tools were employed to design the blasts to ensure there was no fly rock and that the blast vibrations were as low as possible. UAV surveys of the blast areas were conducted to provide a 3-D representation of the free faces and bench surface. The 3-D point cloud produced from this was used to measure the shape of the free faces. Once the shape of the free faces was quantified, it was possible to establish proper placement of the crest holes and develop a custom explosive load for each blast hole. In addition, signature hole analysis was performed for each blast to determine the optimum delay time that balanced the need for minimal vibration, prevent fly rock, and a well fragmented muck pile. Electronic detonators were applied to achieve the necessary control of the blast that balances these three concerns. The results of the seven blasts conducted to date provided the desired results. The peak vibration level at the sewage treatment plant for the seven blasts was 10 mm/s (0.40 in/s). The only fly rock occurred when there was a miscommunication in the blast design resulting in under burdened holes on the front row. To date, the mine has been able to safely expand the pit into an area that will add many years to the mine life. The muck piles have been well fragmented with reports from the shovel that they have all dug well.

The article presents the main functionality of the DSS class system for monitoring and stability assessment of tailings storage facilities. The presented demonstrator was deployed on the example of the Żelazny Most reservoir - the largest active facility of this type in Europe and the second one in the world. Considered a high-risk structure, it demands a system capable of online analysis of big data from various sources using machine learning, 3D modeling, or GIS mapping with the functions of interactive time-spatial analysis. In this paper, we present a complex calculation module with an integrated user interface.

"The floatability of molybdenite fines in saline solutions was investigated through microflotation studies using a modified Hallimond tube. In addition, the effect of pH and gypsum precipitation from calcium ions (Ca2+) and sulfate ions (SO4 2-) ions in saline water on the recovery of the molybdenite was analyzed. It was found that the floatability of molybdenite fines significantly increased with the ionic strength of the saline solutions and is independent of pH above 0.5 mol/L ionic strength. The high floatability of molybdenite in saline solutions is explained as being due to the low electrostatic repulsion between bubbles and the edges of molybdenite particles, which is exceeded by interactions due to van der Waals and hydrophobic forces. The precipitation of Ca2+ and SO4 2- ions as gypsum had a detrimental effect on the natural floatability of molybdenite because of gypsum crystal attachment on the faces of the molybdenite particles. This precipitation phenomenon may be initiated in copper–molybdenite flotation circuits that use recycled saline water, like seawater containing Ca2+ and SO4 2- ions.IntroductionWater availability is a significant factor in mining projects. Water, particularly fresh water from rivers and underground water, is becoming a scarce resource for mining operations and new projects. Under these circumstances, the use of water with high concentration of salts in flotation plants is becoming increasingly important (Cisternas and Moreno, 2014). The use of seawater has been studied as a sustainable solution for many mining companies in dry areas located near the sea. Notably, using seawater in mining operations is how mining companies in Chile have coped with the problem of water resources (Cisternas and Gálvez, 2014). In 1930, small plants in Chile used seawater to float chalcopyrite from high-copper-grade ores. In 1975, the results of tests in pilot plants for the flotation of copper minerals with seawater were reported. It was found that froth formation in seawater at pH 9.5 was suitable to make the rougher circuit work properly, even without frothers. The Cenizas mining group successfully floated chalcocite, bornite and chalcopyrite in the Las Luces plant in Taltal in Chile using seawater (Moreno et al., 2011). Minera Centinela (Antofagasta Minerals S.A. Chile) is currently processing porphyry copper ores using a seawater mixture consisting of 20 percent fresh seawater and 80 percent recycled water. Lower consumption of flotation reagents was reported in both seawater and salt water. In addition, studies performed with synthetic seawater showed that certain frothers increase the froth volume, whereas others decrease it. Additionally, the froth produced with seawater carries a high amount of gangue, and low-quality concentrates are obtained, requiring more cleaning stages."

The Bureau of Mines determined the gas contents of 135 oil shale samples obtained from approximately 630 ft of core drilling. Drilling was done within a projected mining zone of the Cathedral Sluffs Mine, located in the Piceance Basin of western Colorado. Methane contents were determined by the modified direct method, which can measure the volumes of several gases released from or reacted with mine rock without destructive sample treatment. Over the duration of the test, nitrogen was largely unreactive, CO2 increased slightly, oxygen decreased markedly, and methane increased more than the total increase of all contained gases. The gas volumes were normalized per unit sample mass and are given in cubic centimeters per gram. Common time irzdices for test duration of 3, 40, and 125 days were used to compare methane desorption among samples. The means of the sample populations for these indices were 0.0316, 0.114, and 0.195 cm3/g, respectively. These quantities are lower than those reported in a Bureau emissions study at the Horse Draw Mine in the Piceance Basin. Oil shale samples that were gas enriched beyond the mean methane contents frequently contained bitumens and pyrite.

PNEUMATIC processes for converting molten pig iron to steel were the major producers of steel during the latter half of the 19th Century and until shortly after the turn of the century, when these processes began losing ground to their rival—the basic open hearth process. The first pneumatic process for converting molten pig iron to steel was introduced almost simultaneously by Sir Henry Bessemer in England and by William Kelley in the United States during the decade 1850-1860, but it was Bessemer who pushed it to a successful commercial operation. The process itself is so basically simple that it has not lent itself to many extensive or revolutionary improvements since its inception. During the first 30 yr, numerous' designs of vessel and many modifications of practice were tried before the industry standardized on something resembling current practice. The evolution in construction has resulted in proportions and arrangements based more on mechanical expedience than on metallurgical requirements. Many of the early converters were stationary and had to be tapped similarly to the cupola or open hearth furnace. Such types were used for many years in Sweden and Germany, but the rotating or tilting types were favored in England and the United States. There was evident trouble with bottom tuyeres, becAuse about half of the early designs were constructed for side blowing with tuyeres submerged below the metal-bath surface. Even portable tuyeres, introduced from above, were tried. The principal advance, which made bottom blowing practical, was the invention, in 1863, by Henry Bessemer, and subsequent improvement by A. L. Holley, of a detachable bottom so that the tuyere section could be renewed. In the meantime, it was the demonstration, by Robert Mushet, of the value of manganese in overcoming hot-shortness in converter steel, that made the process metallurgically feasible. At first, only the acid practice was used, and Swedish pig iron, because of its low sulphur and phosphorus, was in great demand. The development of a suitable basic lining, by Sidney G. Thomas and Percy G. Gilchrist in 1876-1879, made the process applicable to the high-phosphorus ores of Europe. From the beginning of the use of the Thomas-Gilchrist process, trouble was experienced in obtaining sufficiently high temperatures in the blown metal, particularly in small heats. It is necessary, of course, to have the low-carbon blown metal at a considerably higher temperature for handling from vessel to ladle to molds than is needed for the molten pig iron. All of the increase in temperature in a pneumatic process must be obtained from the heat of combustion of the elements contained in the pig iron plus that from silicon when ferrosilicon is added. In bottom blowing practice, carbon is almost completely burned, but inasmuch as it cannot be oxidized to a higher state of oxidation than to CO when in contact with liquid iron, only a minor portion of the heat-producing capacity is utilized. Under such conditions, it is not considered to be an efficient source of heat. In the acid practice, therefore, silicon and manganese are the large heat producers, are quickly oxidized, and are efficient fuels. Too much manganese, however, thins the slag greatly and tends to promote excessive slopping or throwing of slag and metal from the converter during the blow. Most operators, therefore, like to keep the manganese content of the iron below 0.60 pct, and thus the main source of heat is the silicon, which must be at least 1 pct and sometimes 2 to 3 pct for small blows such as for castings. Ferrosilicon is sometimes added during the blow to obtain an adequate temperature level. In the basic (Thomas) practice, even more heat is required, because cold lime is added to flux the phosphorus after it is oxidized, and the basic slag must be maintained at a proper temperature. Mining may be defined as a general term for the working of valuable deposits of minerals, either organic or inorganic in origin, for their removal from the crust of the earth. Besides subsurface excavations, mining generically includes opencuts, clay pits and stone quarries, oil wells, sulphur wells, salt wells, placers, coal stripping, and the leaching of ore bodies. The origin of the word "mine" or "mining" is a matter of conjecture. A Celtic origin has been suggested since the Irish word mein, or the mwyn, meant ore, but it seems to have come from an olf French verb mineor, which meant to excavate, to make an underground passage as in the military appraoch to a fortification, sometimes called ?sapping.?

INTRODUCTION Cross, et al. (1974), produced a retrospective study of standard setting for underground miners. This report had two distinct components; i) criteria of importance for the protection of the miners, and ii) economic considerations for standard setting. The methods for setting radiation safety standards reviewed were: dose calculations and consensus methods; epidemiology; pathology; bioassay; animal experiments; sputum cytology; chromosome aberrations; and, the Mantel-Bryan Model. By looking back, the authors intended to enable officials to look ahead in making future decisions based on reasonable conclusions. Now it may be time to consider underground miners' protection from another perspective: are there miners who may be especially susceptible to toxic environments?; and if so, are there any biomedical assays that might be indicative of exceptional sensitivities to toxic substances? The human population is genetically very heterogeneous. The data of Saccomanno, et al. (1973), reveal great variability in individual response to radon daughter exposure and only a small portion of the miner population subject to toxic inhalants develop squamous cell metaplasia (Saccomanno, et al., 1970). The majority of the miner population is either not susceptible or is resistant to the toxic agents. This information suggests the existence of a small subpopulation with increased sensitivity or reduced resistance and underscores the need for indicators from biomedical assays that might prove of value for the detection of such individuals. The heightened awareness of the contribution of pollutants in the environment for the potential induction of mutations and carcinogenesis lead to a profusion of short-term bioassays to circumvent the high cost and time-consuming large toxicity animal studies. Over 100 bioassays across taxa from microbes to man are at various stages of use or development (Hollstein, et al., 1979). Less than a dozen tests currently offer early promise for application to[ in vivo] effect studies of man. Many are still in early development, lack the sensitivity needed for a retrospective or prospective study at current permissible exposures, are impractical to conduct in the field, or are not cost effective. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the bioassays that may now, or in the near term, prove applicable for the detection of individual underground miners with increased susceptibility to toxic agents. Throughout this statement, it is assumed that any single test may give false negatives or false positives and, therefore, a tier of tests should be investigated. The possible tests are in various stages of development; some tests better proven than others with a firmer data base and, therefore, with greater probability of usefulness. Some of the less proven assays are not ruled out if they have practical or theoretical promise as indicators. Table I summarizes the assays critiqued for their potential to monitor the effects of [in vivo] exposure to genotoxic substances. POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF HIGHLY SENSITIVE MINERS Assays of Body Fluids It is desirable to have data on the agent(s) to which subjects are exposed when humans are monitored by biomedical effects. Obviously, to varying intensity, the underground mining environments are monitored for radon daughters and it is recognized that the miners are also exposed to other pollutants, most notably, uranium ore dust and diesel fumes. Further testing for the metabolites of the pollutants can be done on body fluid, urine. [High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)]: This is a very sensitive method for the detection of mutagenic metabolites in urine. The urine is treated with the enzyme sulfatase and beta-glucuronidase to permit identification of substances that are made nonmutagenic by conjugation as glucuronides. The sample is then passed through an XAD-2 resin column and the absorbed organic molecules eluted with acetone. The sample is then split and evaporated to 1 ml and used for direct chemical analysis using HPLC. One drawback to the test is the inability to measure cumulative exposure, but multiple samples can be obtained and comparison to baseline (control) and exposure samples can reveal qualitative differences as a consequence of exposure to mutagens. [The Ames/Salmonella Microbiological Assay]: The Ames/Salmonella microbiological mutagen test is the most extensively used short-term bioassay, with over 2,600 chemicals having undergone testing by this method (Hollstein, et al., 1979). The method, thoroughly worked out and tested for 10 years, consists of taking the second split urine sample from the HPLC preparation, evaporating to dryness and dissolving in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Following a successful investigation on the Central Zone sample, a cyanidation study was conducted on an ore sample from the AD-MW Zone of Clarence Stream Property, owned by Freewest Resources Canada, to develop a leaching strategy to extract gold. At a grade of 6.48 g/t, gold is present in the forms of aurostibite, free gold and electrum. The ore contains 4.3% berthierite/gudmundite, 1.3% pyrrhotite, 0.7% pyrite, 0.07% stibnite and 0.9% arsenopyrite. Similar to the Central Zone, the extraction of gold from the AD-MW Zone can be performed at atmospheric pressure, pH 10.5 and with a low concentration of cyanide. The grind size had no effect on gold extraction between a P80 of 28 to 71 µm. The oxygen and cyanide requirement significantly increased with a ?ner grind. Consequently, a very close control of cyanide addition is required to minimize passivation of gold. Lead nitrate, added in the pretreatment, increased the extraction of gold by 2.3%. Leaching at pH < 10 improved gold extraction but increased the cyanide consumption by 5%. Passivation of gold occurred when the pretreatment was longer than 2 hours. A longer pretreatment reduced the cyanide consumption by 5%. Mineralogical characterization of the leach residue with no gravity pretreatment prior to leaching indicated the presence of unleached gold grains and passivated gold grains. Removal of coarse gold by gravity increased the extraction by 2.8% (leach residue at 0.74 g/t Au). Increasing the DO to 16 ppm or the lead nitrate from 500 to 1,000 g/t increased the overall gold extraction to 90.4% (leach residue at 0.62 g/t), which is the maximum gold extraction obtained. The leaching parameters were 800 ppm NaCN, DO 16 ppm and pH 10.5 for a duration of 120 hours. The associated cyanide consumption was 4.0 kg/t. Gold leaching was not sensitive to cyanide concentration. Reducing the cyanide concentration to 250 ppm resulted in a gold extraction of 89.5% with a cyanide consumption of 2.6 kg/t.

IN the summer and fall of 1875, the author was present during a short smelting campaign at the Hall Valley works, and having had occasion to make a number of chemical analyses of the ores, fuel, and fluxes, deems that the results of the same, and also an account of the smelting operations, may be found of interest to members of the Institute. The mines and reduction works of the Hall Valley Silver-Lead Mining and Smelting Company (limited) are situated at Hall Valley, Park County, Colorado. The smelting works are located about half way from the mouth to the head of the above-named valley, and the mines high up on the mountains, near its head. The three principal mines of the company are the Whale, Leftwick, and Cold¬spring. They are all on different veins, running parallel to one another, with a general trend from southwest and northeast. "In 1980, J.S. Redpath Limited were retained by Dickenson Mines Limited to increase hoisting capacity from 700 to 1000 tons per day. The hoisting capacity of the present skip-over-cage system could not be increased significantly through design modifications. The other constraint was a minimum of disruption to the current production. The Dickenson shaft was a three-compartment shaft from surface to the 8th level and four compartments before the 8th to the 23rd level. The solution to the problem was to remove the services from the shaft man-way compartment from the 8th level to surf ace by drilling a borehole close to the shaft and rerouting those services through the borehole to the 8th level. A service compartment would then be available from surf ace to the 23rd level.By providing a service hoist in this compartment, the skip hoist would then be free to produce the 1000-tons/day required production. This paper will describe the search for the required hoist and the friction hoist selected for the project, and trace the design modifications required to modify the hoist to suit the Dickenson application and satisfy the Department of Labour safety requirements.The paper has been co-authored by J.S. Redpath Limited and C.L. Tiley Associates, who participated in the design changes and eventual commissioning of the hoist.IntroductionIn the earl y part of 1980, J.S. Redpath Limited conducted an engineering study on the Dickenson Mines Limited No. 1 Shaft materials handling system. The object of the engineering study was to investigate the possibility of increasing the tonnage hoisted from the No. 1 Shaft complex by adding a service cage compartment and service hoist. This would permit utilization of the existing hoisting plant solely for production hoi sting. A further consideration of the engineering study was that any alterations had to be accomplished with little, or no, interruption to production."

Introduction This paper is a descriptive analysis of injuries and fatalities at small surface bituminous coalmining companies in Pennsylvania. The purpose of analyzing a specific industry sector and location is to identify issues that might be missed in a wider analysis. Other studies of small mine safety (e.g., Peters and Fotta, 1994, Randolph and Boldt, 1997) have shown that the relationship between safety and mine size is not a simple one. Some injury types occur at higher rates at small mines, while others occur at lower rates. Consequently, an analysis limited to a specific type of mining can help identify hazards and issues specific to that sector. The results of this analysis will be useful for directing training, intervention, and research efforts towards the most prevalent causal factors and incident types. Procedures and Definitions Data sources The primary sources of data for this analysis were files provided by MSHA containing information collected under Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, Part 50. These files, commonly referred to as “Part 50 data”, are provided though MSHA’s Program Evaluation and Information Resources directorate. Two primary types of injuries were selected from the Part 50data: Fatalities (MSHA “degree of injury” code 1) and lost-time injuries, otherwise known as nonfatal with days lost (MSHA “degree of injury” codes 2 through 5). Lost-time injuries involve either actual days away from work or days of restricted activity or both. Fatality and lost-time injury incidence rates were calculated using the standard MSHA formula: Number of injuries per 200,000 employee-hours. Additional information on company sizes and mine ownership was provided by the Pennsylvania State University College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. Time span A five-year time span was selected for this study. More than a single year of safety experience is usually needed to capture a broad range of incident types. Many types of injuries, especially fatal injuries, can be extremely rare, and may be missed if too short a time span is selected. However, a time span that extends too far back may begin to suffer historical threats to validity. That is, incidents that occurred several years ago may be caused by hazards that have since been remedied or may be related to mining practices and conditions that no longer exist. A five-year span offers a practical compromise between these two concerns. Consequently, the MSHA Part 50 data files from 1993 through 1997 were used. The 1997 file was in “preliminary” form at the time of the study, so small variations from the final 1997 “close out” file can be expected. Based on past experience, we do not expect the close-out variations to have a significant impact on the findings.

No early records of coal in Iowa have been found, although it is very probable that coal along the Mississippi, in the northeastern corner of the state, was seen very early. The United States Census of 1840 showed a production of 400 tons, mined of course in 1839, and the earliest mining, was in Jefferson and Fairfield Counties where the coal was hauled by wagons to shops in the Mississippi River towns years before any railroad was built in the state. In 1840 mines were opened in Van Buren County, near Farmington and Douds, and in Scott County, near Jamestown, all of the product being used locally.&apos; In 1844 D. D. Owen reported seeing mines in the tongue of land between the Rock and Mississippi Rivers, in one of them the coal being 5 to 6 ft. thick, and several other seams south of this locality? In the, late forties a number of small mines were opened in various parts of the state, and in following years in practically every county having coal. The Mystic seam was first opened in 1857 in Appanoose County, since then consistently one of the large producing areas in the state. Consumption was local until the Milwaukee Railroad was built through the county in 1887.1

Many advanced military systems and civilian power generation concepts postulate the availability of compact sources of electrical power capable of delivering gigawatts over microsecond time scales. For example, such a compact power source is essential for future practical pulsed high-powered microwave sources. An explosive-driven flux-compression power generator (EDPG) could fill this requirement. A basic strength of this concept capitalizes on the inherent high energy density storage capacity of modern chemical explosives. It relies on the physics of magnetic flux compression to convert that stored chemical energy into very large amounts of electrical power over short time scales. The generator also has the additional advantage of employing the same types of explosives that are already routinely used in conventional munitions. However, the self-destructive nature of this type of power generator places serious limitations on power pulse-lengths and ranges of applications. This paper describes how a multi-disciplinary team led by researchers from the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR), Texas Tech University (TTU), and Texas A&M University was awarded a grant by the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research to perform basic research to resolve several fundamental EDPG problem areas. Described are the utilization of UMR’s extensive explosives research expertise and facilities to investigate questions of energy conversion efficiency and the mechanics of energy production. Also, UMR explosives researchers will provide inputs to improved dynamic computer models of the complex, intertwined physics and chemistry operative in these devices. In addition to explosives expertise, UMR provides facilities for basic explosives material research, as well as the storage, machining, and formulation of explosives. UMR researchers are also using test facilities and data collection equipment at the Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center and at the UMR Experimental Mine to perform “proof of principle” and subscale tests of explosive-driven flux-compression power generator components. An integral part of the paper is a description of the development of an extreme intensity flash system by UMR and TTU to allow for the high-speed photography of EDPGs in operation. This multi disciplinary research program offers major advances regarding the size, weight, and electrical characteristics of compact EPDGs. Such breakthroughs could dramatically accelerate the practical realization of systems currently under study. Also, these power sources may have far reaching relevance to other Department of Defense and certain commercial compact power applications.

The localities at which the rock specimens studied were collected, and descriptions of the various rock-types referred to, are given in a previous paper by the author (5).The geological field work upon which this paper is based was carried out while the writer was employed by the Eldorado Mining and Refining Company during the summers of 1948, 1949 and 1950. The laboratory work§ consisted largely of quantitative spectrographic analyses for both major and minor elements, supplemented by an examination of 250 thin sections of both altered and unaltered rocks.Character of the AlterationHydrothermal alteration, with associated pitchbende mineralization, is widespread in the Goldfields area of Saskatchewan. The most intense alteration is restricted to the immediate vicinity of fault or breccia zones, but large areas are affected to a minor extent.In detail, the relationship between alteration and pitchblende mineralization is complex, as individual veins do not in general have separate alteration halos. Pitchblende generally occurs in gash-like calcite veins or stringers in wide, fractured zones associated with faulting. Large, lenticular and tabular masses of slightly to intensely altered rock occur in the same wide fracture zones as the mineralized veins. However, vein deposition appears to be-long to a later fracturing period, after hydrothermal alteration was more or: less completed. Generally, the veins transect and are confined to highly altered rock, but on the other hand many highly altered zones intersected in diamond drill-core are barren of mineralized veins."

Jet grouting has increasingly become a ground improvement technology used to address seepage concerns and provide strength improvement to soils underlying dams. The technique of jet grouting uses high pressure/volume jet fluids to erode existing soil, evacuate some or most of the soil, and mix the remaining cuttings with cement slurry to form soilcrete. While considered a useful technology, this paper discusses some of the problems that can develop while jet grouting in or below a dam with an operational reservoir and seepage condition. Jet grouting experience at Tuttle Creek Dam indicates concerns with respect to ground fracture; spoil return, column diameter consistency, and homogeneity of resulting soilcrete. Recommendations are presented to increase monitoring of downhole parameters during jet grouting to better understand the downhole pressures and soil response during jet grouting.

American Aggregates Corporation is one of the leading producers of mineral aggregates in the nation. Production is from deposits of glacial sand and gravel and limestone and dolomite bedrock. Annual production from 33 plants is 25,000,000 tons. Land consumption is at the rate of 300 to 400 acres annually. This annual rate of consumption presents a continuing challenge to the exploration and mining personnel to meet the requirements of reserve replacement, mining and land rehabilitation.

Earlier we described the uranium mineralogy of an areally broad sampling of Crownpoint ore, including the characterization of organic carbonaceous material associated with the uranium mineral. (1) We also reported on the leaching behavior of Crownpoint ores with a mild alkaline leaching system, oxygen (02)-sodium bicarbonate (NaHC03). (2) There was a wide range of leaching responses, with samples from some areas leaching at a slow rate with low uranium recovery. Evidence indicates that in these samples the organic material is intimately associated with the uranium mineral and shields it to some extent from contact by the leachate. (1,2) One method to obtain faster leach rates and higher recoveries is to use a chemically severe leaching system such as sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI) as an oxidant. (3) The use of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and an oxidant for leaching ore in surface milling operations is widely practiced to effect high recovery of uranium (U308) from the ore. (4,5,6) The U308 is mobilized as the disulfate complex, U02(S04)224-, or possibly, the trisulfate complex, U02(S04)34-, is the soluble species. (7) Sulfuric acid leachate formulations were used in the first in-situ leaching operation in the Shirley Basin in Wyoming. (8) More recently H2S04 formulations have been used in the Rocky Mountain Energy field tests in the Powder River Basin (Bear Creek) and in the Teapot forma¬tion at Nine Mile Lake site near Casper. (9,10) Laboratory studies related to the use of H2SO4 for in-situ leaching have been reported (11-17) and Yan has .reported packed column leach studies on Crownpoint ore using H2504 and oxidant. Using- galvanic cells of the form Sn(liq)/Sn" (LiCl-KC1-SnCl,)/Sn-Ag (alloy), measurements have been made of relative thermodynamic properties of the a, C, E, and liquid phases of the Ag-Sn alloy system. Partial heats of solution of the components in the liquid alloys lzave also been observed by direct cal-orimetric measurement in an isoperibol calorimeter. The thermodynanzic quantities are disczlssed in relation to structural and other properties and the existence of anomalous minor fluctuations in the partial heats and entropies of solution in liquid alloys is tentatively suggested. In the course of a recent electro motive-force study of the thermodynamic properties of Sn-Ag-Pd liquids,&apos; some measurements were also performed on the Ag-Sn binary system. Most previous thermodynamic studies of this system have been concerned with the liquid state. Measurements confined to the limiting heat of solution of silver in liquid tin have been made by many calorimetric workers2 while high-temperature calorimetric measurements of the heats of formation of the full range of liquid alloys are reported in the early work of Kawakami~ (1323°K) and more recently by Wittig and Gehrin~(1248°K). Electromotive-force studies on liquid alloys have been made by Yanko, Drake, and Hovorka&apos; (606" to 686°K; 86 to 99.4 at. pct Sn) and by Frantik and Mc Donald&apos; (900°K; 30 to 90 at. pct Sn). The only known measurements on the solid state are of heats of formation of the a, £, and c phases; these values were obtained using tin-solution calorimetry, at 723"K, by Kleppa,~ whose investigation also yielded heats of formation of liquid alloys containing more than 64 at. pct Sn. The present experiments on the Ag-Sn alloys include a re-examination of the liquid phase and, because of the dearth of free-energy data for the solid state, attempted measurements on the a, c, and E phases. The principal new feature of electromotive-force results obtained for the liquid phase was an indication of anomalous fluctuations in the partial heats and entropies of solution of tin at certain compositions. However, since the values for these thermodynamic quantities were determined from the temperature coefficients of cell potentials, which are commonly subject to considerable error, confirmation by calorimetric measurements was considered desirable. A detailed investigation of the partial heats of solution of the components in the binary liquids was made using a liquid metal solution calorimeter. I) GALVANIC CELL STUDIES a) Experimental Details. Measurements were made, as a function of alloy composition and temperature, of the potentials of reversible galvanic cells of the form: ~n(liq)/~n++/~n-Ag (solid or liquid alloy) Details of the apparatus and experimental techniques have been given elsewhere.&apos; so that a brief account will suffice here. Molten salt, 58 mole pct LiC1-42 mole pct KC1, containing small amounts (1 to 2 mole pct) of stannous chloride was used as the electrolyte. The salts were dehydrated by pre-electrolysis and vacuum -drying techniques. Cells were established under an argon atmosphere by immersing tin and alloy electrodes in the molten salt contained in a large silica tube, heated in a vertical resistance furnace. The tube was sealed at the top by a head plate provided with openings permitting the simultaneous insertion of six electrodes, a central thermocouple sheath, and connections to vacuum and argon lines. Temperatures were controlled to *0.2"C over prolonged periods, with maximum variation over the electrodes at any time of 0.l°C. Temperatures were measured with a standardized Pt/13 pct Rh-Pt couple. The electromotive force of this and the cell potentials were measured on a Cambridge Vernier potentiometer and short-period galvanometer. Alloys were prepared from Pass "S" tin (99.999 pct) and Johnson-Matthey high-purity silver (99.999 pct) by melting in evacuated silica capsules and quenching in cold water. For liquid phase experiments, pieces of the resulting alloys were remelted into prepared silica electrode units, while solid electrodes were prepared by remelting into 3-mm bore tubing, inserting a cleaned molybdenum lead wire, and quenching to produce uniform rods about 3 cm in length, with soundly attached leads. In all cases remelting was done under an argon atmosphere. The solid electrodes were subsequently annealed in evacu ated silica tubes for 14 days at about 20°C below the solidus and quenched. Analyses showed that these techniques produced uniform electrodes with no significant change from weighed out compositions. b) Results and Discussion. Measurements were made on about forty alloys in the solid and liquid states, over varying ranges of temperature between 550" and 1050°K.
