From a vast army of workers to gargantuan machines to immense volumes of material being moved, almost everything about the Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT) project points to tunneling on a massive scale. Almost.The star of this underground and underwater show is a Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine (TBM,) nicknamed ?Harriet? by a local Girl Scout troop. With her 12.9-m- (42.3-ft-) diameter cutting head and a total length of 139 m (457 ft), Harriet is boring through thousands of cubic meters of clay, dirt and sand, which is often mixed with coral and other materials, to create two 1,280-m (4,200-ft) traf?c tunnels connecting Watson Island and the Port of Miami (Dodge Island) beneath Biscayne Bay, FL. But in the midst of all of the oversized equipment and machines, a strong contender for the best supporting nod goes to a relatively tiny machine: the Brokk 400. Bouygues Civil Works Florida crews are using the compact, remote-controlled and electric-powered machine to excavate five cross passages between the twin traffic tunnels. The pas-sages will be essential to the safety of people who drive their vehicles under the bay every day.

To check the feasibility and the quality of a very deep diaphragm wall, a tern of adjacent panels has been constructed, up to a depth of 100 m, in the Milan sandy gravelly soil by means of a hydraulically driven milling machine with reverse circulation of mud. The results of the monitoring carried out in order to evaluate the panel geometry and the quality of both joints and concrete are described. The use of instrumentation based on different physical principles allowed the cross checking of measurements as well as the evaluation of the accuracy and sensitivity of each single procedure to be performed. The trial field was successfully carried out and the feasibility of a diaphragm wall of such a depth was demonstrated and corroborated by a reasonable level of quality control.

I find that during the short time I have been in this district, the majority of boilers are, and have been, receiving very bad usage owing to the difficulties which they have to contend against, viz., oil and bad water. Oil on the heating surface of a boiler is of a highly dangerous nature inasmuch as it allows the surface to become overheated, owing to the water not coming into direct contact with the plates, and it naturally follows that when the crown sheets of a flue or firebox become overheated, you lose a considerable amount of the strength of the plate, and the flue or crown comes down. Referring to the oil question, I find that too much care cannot or exercised on the part of engine drivers in order to minimise as much as possible the internal lubrication of the various engines under their control. For I consider that it is here that the most of the trouble is caused. My reasons for stating such to be the case, are:-That the majority of enginedrivers before coming to this field have been used to driving engines that have been exhausting into the atmosphere, and probably they have been taught that it is far better to use a little extra lubrication than to have a hot bearing. So far so good. But one thing that must not be overlooked is that on these fields the conditions are altered in this respect, as the majority of engines in this district are not exhausting into the atmosphere, but are condensing their exhaust steam and using the water so condensed for feed purposes.

The Government signalled its intention in the Economic Statement on 17 December 1987 to improve the fairness of the taxation system and to facilitate the process of economic adjustment by: removing tax concessions that benefit some taxpayers at the expense of other taxpayers,ensuring that those who can afford it shoulder their fair share of the tax burden,securing a revenue base which will provide sufficient resources to maintain effective social services,reducing artificial protection and concessions that discriminate against some sectors, and encouraging confidence through an economic environment with a medium-term orientation. The Government has clearly stated to all sectors that tax preferences will be phased out and businesses need to look inwardly to their investment policies if they are to survive in an open economy. This paper will address the effect of these Government objectives on the taxation structure for all forms of mineral exploration in New Zealand. The present tax structure will firstly be analysed, in particular setting out the tax advantages available to the industry. The effect of changes to the tax system within the recent past which relate to mineral exploration will then be examined. Finally the paper will address the question of possible future changes, particularly in the light of Government's intention to move towards a tax system which does not provide an advantage for any one sector of the economy.

The syngenetic, metamorphic water, and source bed concept theories of ore deposition proposed by Anton Gray, C, Lo Knight and others, to explain ores in sedimentary rocks, are challenged on the basis of a survey of the literature and personal observation, A hydrothermal origin for the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt deposits is indicated by the presence of post-Roan age igneous rocks and post-gabbro mineralization, the wide distribution of ore in the various Lower Roan lithologic types, and the zoning of the copper-iron sulphlde minerals and minor elements The proposal by Gray and Knight that igneous rocks are not favorable as guides to nonferrous metal deposits, and Gray's hypothesis that the redistribution of connate waters and their dissolved metals by metamorphic processes was responsible for the emplacement of ores, are rejected as contrary to field evidence, The absence of exposed potential igneous source rocks is shown to be an invalid argument for the proponents of any syngenetic hypothesis, The common association of ore deposits with calc-alkaline intrusive rocks and their derivatives is, however, demonstrated to be convincing evidence that an exploration program based upon a magmatic theory of origin, would have found most of the important known non-ferrous metal deposits of the world, It is urged that prospecting be continued on the sound basis of accumulated knowledge of the lithologic and structural facts surrounding known ore deposits.

"In the flotation process the contact angle is an important indicator of the hydrophobicity of a mineral particle. There is considerable literature showing that the contact angle increases when the chain length of the alkyl group associated with the collector molecule used to render the valuable mineral particle hydrophobic increases. The extent to which an alkyl group interacts with surrounding water molecules is quantified thermodynamically by the excess Gibbs energy. In the present paper it is shown that there exists generally a strong linear relationship between the excess Gibbs energy of the alkyl group associated with the collector and the contact angle. The structure-activity of such alkyl groups is in turn related to the total surface area, molecular volume, the molar volume, molecular weight of the functional groups in the molecule and interaction energies. It is proposed that the demonstrated relationship is indicative of the role which the alkyl group component of the collector, which is attached to the mineral particle, plays in increasing the extent to which water molecules at the surface of the mineral are rejected from the surface thus increasing the contact angle. The relationship between excess Gibbs energy and surface tension is further explored with a view to relating the observations quantitatively to the parameters in the Young equation.INTRODUCTIONThe issue of wettability of materials is of great importance to many industrial applications. Wettability studies usually involve the measurement of contact angles which indicate the degree of wetting when a solid and liquid interact. As is well known the contact angle (O) is the angle between planes tangent to the surfaces of the solid and the liquid at the wetting perimeter which is the zone where the air, water and solid phase merge. When the air bubble attaches to the solid surface there is an increase in the air/solid interface area and a decrease in the solid/water interface area. For attachment to occur the cosine of the contact angle should be less than 1 and this will be promoted if the interfacial surface tension between the air and the solid (? SV) is low. The Conda Partnership's Dry Valley Phosphate mine is a thinly bedded, multiple seam, open pit mining operation where selective mining techniques are used to recover phosphatic shales. The mining methods used are truck/shovel and scraper/ dozer operations. The ore that is mined is shipped 32 km (20 miles) by rail to a beneficiation facility which upgrades the ore via washing and calcining. The mine and beneficiation complexes are owned by the Conda Partnership. The Conda Partnership is a joint venture between Beker Industries Corp. of Greenwich, Connecticut, and Western Co-Operative Fertilizers (U.S.) Inc. of Alberta, Canada. The Conda Partnership operates as a separate entity from the two partners.

The Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) provides a cost effective solution for the rapid construction of retaining and cut-off walls using new equipment developed from diaphragm wall cutter technology. CSM consists of cutting and mixing drums mounted on compact hydraulic motors. Soletanche Bachy CSM has been designed to leave the space above the tool free, thereby mixing the soil efficiently during all the phases of the wall construction, with high penetration rates. The precise positioning and verticality of the wall is achieved using a kelly bar and full monitoring. Soletanche Bachy CSM is a versatile equipment which can be mounted on various carriers: pile rigs, hydraulic crane, carrier equipped with telescopic mast. The major phases of Soletanche Bachy CSM development are presented, including the results of an extensive trial carried out in Le Havre (France). The soil consists of hydraulic fill with soft soil lenses overlying sandy deposits. 20m deep panels were constructed to support a rectangular shaft. During the construction, and after its completion, the shaft was subjected to an extensive series of tests followed by a partial excavation. The paper discusses also the future development of the technique and its potential applications.

Today, man is able to probe space because of technological advancements including the ability to control certain combustion reactions very precisely. The recent adjustment of the attitude of Skylab by radio command from earth is an excellent example of such control. It is strange, and indeed unfortunate, that very little is known about the mechanism of combustion of pulverized coal, the primary fuel for rotary kilns. The selection of a coal for direct pulverized firing of a rotary lime kiln may be determined by trial and error, persistence of sales personnel, proximate analyses, grindability, or apparent BTU cost. Occasionally, the only question asked is, "How much lime will it make?" To study the behavior of a particle of coal in the combustion stream of a rotary kiln is most difficult. We must, therefore, discuss the general mechanism of combustion of pulverized coal, and relate this mechanism to the selection of a proper coal for a rotary kiln. The classic three T's -time, temperature, turbulence -must be enlarged upon for a better understanding of the problem. Pulverized coal occupies only 0.01 per cent of the volume of air required for its combustion. This mixture behaves like a gas and the general laws governing the movement of solid particles in gasses are in effect. The differential velocity between air and coal particles depends on forced and natural convection, diffusion, and the length of time each particle is in the combustion space. As a particle of coal absorbs heat from its surroundings, it begins to give off volatiles". These gasses ignite as their kindling temperature is reached, and burn readily because of the excess oxygen immediately available. Combustion proceeds at this stage by the outward diffusion of gas from the coal particle into the surrounding oxygen-rich envelope. We could say combustion at this stage represents a small coal particle surrounded by an envelope of volatiles burning at their point of contact with sufficient oxygen. This release or expulsion of gasses from the coal may result in exfoliation or disintegration of the coal particle. If this occurs, and it is desirable that it should, it will accelerate the final stages of combustion. The escape of volatile material from the particle of coal and its subsequent combustion will cause increased turbulence around that individual particle. Ignition is maintained by radiation from gasses and solids in the combustion system, and most importantly, re-radiation from the kiln refractories and the process load.

The maintenance cost, or renewal cost, in any preparation plant is a large item of expense and reflects in the total cost of producing and preparing the ton of coal. It is given constant study to the end that ways and means of controlling and reducing this proportion of the total cost may be developed. Study of this item of cost has proceeded along usual lines, which are: proper functioning of the maintenance organization; systematic and thorough inspection to prevent breakdonns; the making of repairs before renewals are needed; maintenance work done thoroughly the first time, instead of patching, study of parts needing frequent renewal or repairs or conditions resulting in delays, thorough knowledge of cost by the mall responsible for maintenance; and the use of special equipment and materials. This paper is to deal with special equipment and materials to reduce the maintenance cost hut before going into that I want to express an opinion on the general subject. Maintenance Organization Usually maintenance is taken care of by a group of men who perform their work on the off shift. The work is arranged by the operating official who should be thoroughly familiar with maintenance, so that materials needed may be made up for the particular job and waste of time in looking up materials be prevented. To perfect the maintenance organization, all operating attendants should be thoroughly trained to be familiar with all working parts of their equipment, to make a thorough inspection and to write out the slip for the work required. This requires job analysis, but it is worth the effort, because the attendant usually is better informed than anyone else about his particular equipment. The operating official can judge the scope of the work to direct the repair and to have material ready. Lubrication is an important item in maintenance, and a subject by itself. Usually the breaker oiler is designated to perform this task. This man should be picked for his ability and put in line for promotion to machinist. He should be trained as an inspector, as he is constantly visiting most parts of the breaker and has an opportunity to observe needed maintenance. The first thing is to lay out maintenance work and arrange to have it done; the next is to check the work and see that it has been properly done. This check should be made by the operating official, and through the attendant. The cost statement showing the various items of maintenance cost is not often understood by the man in direct charge. "The application of geometallurgy and corresponding sample selection can take on several formats within industry. Current practice can range from a strictly geostatistical approach to one in which geological and metallurgical parameters are used in combination to create a representative sample selection strategy. The stage of a project and the level of information available at the time of sampling influences the methodology used to create a representative sample.A geometallurgical study of Carpathian Gold’s Rovina Valley Project in Romania is used to demonstrate a sample selection strategy that integrates geological, mineralogical and metallurgical data to maximize the relevance of the geometallurgical unit definitions. This approach, practiced by Xstrata Process Support for its’ clients, ensures that the results of the metallurgical program can be interpreted in the context of these units.INTRODUCTIONGeometallurgy is a cross disciplinary approach in which metallurgical performance of an ore is linked to intrinsic geological and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of a geometallurgical study is to characterize the range of metallurgical performance of an orebody. This allows the geoscientist or metallurgist to create a robust flowsheet able to treat the full range in variability and to develop production strategies to maximize financial performance. The standard approach is to individually sample and test a series of ore types or geometallurgical units. Several different approaches are used in industry to define what constitutes geometallurgical units and how to sample them.One current methodology is the use of multivariate statistics. Geochemical data along with available geological data are used to define multiple variability domains (Williams, 2004; Walters, 2009). There are risks associated with this methodology since the extent of the data set itself may not support a purely statistical approach at the time that metallurgical units need to be defined. The assay suite collected by exploration programs is often limited to pay metals while metallurgical performance is often affected by ore gangue components. Furthermore, in many cases metallurgical scoping and pre-feasibility studies take place prior to the availability of extensive geochemical data sets. Purely statistical methods can produce multiple populations which require extensive sampling, testing and validation prior to consolidation into a reasonable number of composites for metallurgical testing. Methodologies are therefore required that allow representative sampling and testing of consolidated geometallurgical composites to occur at various phases throughout the development of a mining project."

This concept employs a viable energy saving method that uses a solvent to separate oil from particle matter; it can be used in metal forming industries to deoil sludges, oxides, and particle matter that is presently committed to landfill. If oily particles are used in their oily state, severe consequences to environmental control systems such as explosions or filter blinding, occur in the air handling equipment. This is due to the presence of hydrocarbons in the stack gases resulting from the oily particles. After deoiling, the particles can be recycled and the separated oil can be used as a fuel. The process does not produce a waste of it's own and does not harm air or water. It demonstrates the dual benefits of being commercially viable and in the national interest of conserving resources.

INTRODUCTION It has been recognized for some time that major changes in mining methods will be required in the near future. Two types of factors contribute to this need for change. Intrinsic factors include ground control problems associated with mining at increasing depths, noise, dust, toxic fumes, and logistics problems which arise from operation in a cyclical fashion. Extrinsic factors include competition for labor from industries offering safer and less difficult work, pressure for less impact on the environment, and changing economic and political conditions. The search for new mining methods has resulted in extensive research being carried out on such novel approaches as thermal fragmentation, high-pressure water jets, sonic drilling, microwave fragmentation, and laser cutting, among others. Joy Manufacturing Co. has elected to concentrate on impact breaking in stopes as a first generation continuous hard rock miner. IMPACT BREAKING Fragmentation techniques show a drop in specific energy as efficiency improves. Specific energy is the energy consumed per unit volume of rock removed and is affected by such variables as rock material properties, fragmentation method used, operator skill, tool design, etc. Mechanical fragmentation methods generally have specific energies much lower than that of the more novel methods. Table 1 shows impact breaking to have an efficiency exceeded only by that of drill and blast methods and it is this high efficiency which led Joy to impactors as the subject for research on potential mechanisms for continuous mining in hard rock.

Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls and Jennmar high-strength (HS) stopping panel walls are widely used for resisting high-ventilation air pressures and roof support in underground mines due to their installation efficiency, convergence allowance, and better performance than traditional concrete block stopping walls. Based on the different entry dimensions and required maximum ventilation air pressures of up to 36-in. water gauge, 24-, 27-, 30-, and 36-in.-diameter pumpable J-Crib stopping walls, or 18- to 30-in. thick Jennmar HS stopping panel walls can be designed, and their support capacities and convergence allowances are evaluated for better roof control. Pumpable J-Crib stopping walls consist of 0.187-in.-diameter steel wire reinforced, JCrib material-filled bags, and non-wire-reinforced filler bags in between. Jennmar HS stopping panel walls consist of two, 20-gauge (0.04-in.-thick), galvanized, cold-formed steel panels with J-Seal materials pumped in between. Based on the fundamental structural design principles and specifications of ACI 318-19(22), the compression and flexural strength, and shear resistance of the walls can be checked to be compliant with the codes and specifications following the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) method. Specifically, the 0.187- in.-diameter steel wires in the pumpable J-Crib walls and 20-gauge steel panels in the HS stopping walls are integral parts of the walls and are considered to effectively confine the J-Crib or J-Seal materials. These steel elements play a significant role in reinforcing and improving the strength or support capacity of the stopping walls from a structural design perspective. Because of the high ductility of low-density J-Crib/J-Seal materials and steel elements, these walls are good at accommodating or absorbing the roof convergence (≥5% entry height), which cannot be matched by a traditional concrete block stopping wall (Figure 1). Based on the successful design and application of these stopping walls in different mines for improving roof stability and avoiding the air leakage, the authors have formulated the design methodology and verified independently by the finite element analysis (FEA) simulation technique. This design methodology combines the fundamental structural design principles with specific wall dimensions and material properties, facilitating mine engineers and government agencies to understand the in-depth working mechanism of these stopping walls.

Understanding watercourses and river processes at a landscape scale is vital for managing risk to mining infrastructure and operations as well as minimising future environmental impacts beyond the life of the mine. Recognising this, Iluka Resources Limited engaged Alluvium Consulting Australia to identify and characterise watercourses across several neighbouring mineral tenements in the Eucla Basin, South Australia (Alluvium, 2013, 2014a, 2014b). The objective of the studies was to inform planning for risk management during mine planning and operation and appropriate landscape rehabilitation for mine closure.Mining operations in the area are by open cut extraction of mineral sands. The extracted resource is processed on-site before leaving the site for export. Several pits are to be developed in stages with simultaneous backfilling and surface reinstatement. Mining is initially taking place in the Jacinth tenement, where up to 100 km of watercourses may be directly or indirectly impacted (refer to Figure 1).The total study area (shown in Figure 1) is approximately 330 km2 and spans three smaller areas that were the focus of separate investigations during mine planning.CITATION:Ferguson, C, White, K, Harding, M and Hardie, R, 2016. The authors of this paper have a combined construction experience of 70 years. They have served as engineers and managers on projects throughout the United States and Canada. Approximately 50 shafts have been sunk under their direct and daily participation. Several shafts have been selected from each of their experiences and have been briefly summarized here. SHALLOW SHAFT SINKING Sinking shallow shafts in highly urbanized areas adds an additional set of problems to those encountered in normal sinking operations. During the time between July, 1975 and early 1981, a series of shafts were sunk for The Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority. All of these were located along the "A" line, starting soon after the route departed from its path along Connecticut Avenue, proceeding to Wisconsin Avenue and then along Wisconsin Avenue to the city line at Western Avenue.
