By the death of Prof. Pettee the Institute has lost one of its earliest, most distinguished, most useful and most beloved members. Among those who survive him there are few who have rendered services of equal professional value or unselfish devotion. The warrant for this statement will be amply furnished in the present brief notice of his life and work. William Henry Pettee was born, January 13,1838, at Newton Upper Falls, Mass., where hie childhood and youth were spent. His father, Otis Pettee, a manufacturer of cotton cloth and of cotton-mill machinery, died in 1853. Up to that time, the son had been educated mainly in the district school; but, being inclined by temperament and constitution rather to books and study than to physical exertion, he had been wisely rest,rained in mental activity, and required, for a season, to work regularly in the foundry and machine-shop of his father. Unquestionably, this discipline not only benefited his health, but also constituted a valoable preparation for his subsequent professional career. "The recent opening of Muscocho's gold mine at Montauban, as weil as the discovery of several new copper-gold showings of a similar nature near the confluence of the Saguenay and St , Lawrence has revealed the existence of a new metallogenic gold province which is located within supercrustal units of Helikian age within the Grenville Province. Three metalliferous belts have been identified, each one of which is related to a series of SW-NE trending faults. The first is located in southeastern Ontario and southwestern Quebec. The second extends from the Balmat-Pierrepont mining district of New York State up to the Lac St. Jean region of Quebec, and includes the Montauban camp. The third follows the St. Lawrence river in Charlevoix County and along the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.The gold mineralization which is present in the central portion of the Grenville Province is of two types: either stratiform or vein. Deposits of the first type, of which the Muscocho is the type locality, are economically the more interesting of the two. Not only is this mineralization stratiform, but also shows a distinct affinity to AI-rich, Mg-rich or calc-silicate-rich bands. As is the case with the Bousquet and Hemlo regions of the Superior Province, they are associated with layers which are rich in sillimanite and occasionally staurolite. A second parallel between the Bousquet and Montauban deposits might be the presence of manganesian gamets, which have been recognized at the two localities. Some of the mineralization in the central Grenville Province is located within thin bands of iron formation which are rich in arsenic.The stratiform gold deposits of the central Grenville Province are of exhalative origin and are located within a volcano-sedimentary terrane. It is probable that a part of the gold present in these Helikian deposits have been derived by remobilization of Archean mineralization. "Underground blasting operations are challenging from the standpoint of the distribution of explosivesenergy representative of ring blasting. Energy from both shock and pressure regimes of commercialexplosives may appear concentrated in the collar region of a typical ring blast and diluted at the toes of holes due to the oblique geometries of blastholes. The non-homogenous nature of ore in whichexplosives are distributed via drillholes, adds to the complexities of generating particulate profiles from fragmented material with consistencies that are predictable from blast pattern to blast pattern - well suited for specific underground handling equipment and mill processing. In an ideal world, it would be the blasting operations themselves that represent the primary crushing mechanism, or at least mitigate mechanical crushing that can comprise a large component of the cost in generating suitable muck. This paper presents a dynamic break view in 3D that allows a planner to visualize the potential break zone around a blasthole generated by an explosive load using a Kleine field. Simple as it sounds, this methodology provides information that can be used in conjunction with cavity monitoring surveys (CMS) to potentially judge dilution due to overbreak as well as recovery for a typical blast. As examples, there are two break geometries that are examined regarding circular breaks and elliptical breaks around blastholes. Using a Kleine field to define break, a planner generated isosurface can be generated and compared to CMS data for calibration and prediction, using AEGIS 3D ring design software."

"Kinross’ Fort Knox Gold mine, near Fairbanks, Alaska has successfully implemented two major metallurgical continuous improvement projects resulting in growth of gold production and an extension of mine life. In 2009, Fort Knox produced 263,153 oz of gold at a cash operating cost of $543/oz. In 2010, approximately 63% of the gold will be produced from the CIP circuit, 15% of the gold from the gravity circuit and 22% of the gold from the heap leach.In 2009, a 44,000 ton per day run-of-mine valley fill heap leach facility was constructed and commissioned as a cost effective treatment option for low grade ores to supplement the higher grade mill. The heap leach facility will produce approximately 100,000 ounces of gold per year under severe winter conditions. Heap leach gold recovery, based on test work shows 30% after a 55-day leach cycle, with long term ultimate gold recovery targeted at 65%. The paper presents the heap leach design concepts and production data.Additionally in 2009, installation of a Knelson gravity concentrator unit (XD70) was completed. This together with an Acacia intense leach reactor (AILR) has increased overall mill gold recovery from 79.3% to 80.7%. A manual shaking table gold recovery operation has been replaced by batch intensive cyanidation of the high grade Knelson concentrates. Increased removal of coarse gold and difficult-to-leach gold species from the grinding circuit, via the gravity circuit, has improved gold leach recovery in the conventional whole-ore tank leach CIP circuit. The paper presents plant operating data, showing the improvements over the old flowsheet.Focus on the metallurgical properties of the high grade and low grade end components of the Fort Knox ore has resulted in significant improvement to gold recovery."

Gulf Chemical & Metallurgical Corporation (GCMC) operates a circular DC electric smelting furnace to treat nickel and cobalt bearing residues at its plant in Freeport, Texas. The furnace, originally built by others, has experienced problems including runouts through the hearth and the lower sidewall. Hatch has designed several improvements to the furnace to alleviate these problems. The single anode at the centre of the hearth was replaced with a patented system of twelve air-cooled copper anodes evenly spaced around the furnace lower sidewall. The DC power supply comprises two transformers and two rectifiers operating in parallel. The water-cooling system on the bottom and lower sidewall shell plates was replaced with an air-cooling system using copper cooling fins. The existing row of water-cooled copper coolers in the metal bath zone was re-designed for greater heat removal capacity and better element joint sealing, and a new row of water-cooled copper coolers was added to cool both the alumina bath and freeboard zones. The existing water-cooled metal and alumina tapblocks were also re-designed for more robust cooling. A binding system was added to provide refractory compression that reduces the risk of liquid leaks. Finally, the furnace tilting frame was relocated to the top of the furnace where it is less likely to be damaged.

Dragline operations have played a major and successful role in coal mining around the world for more than 30 years. Because of this long history, many of the operating draglines are reaching an age where maintenance and downtime costs are prohibitive, and decisions need to be made to either replace or refurbish them.In the current economic climate, refurbishment is a popular choice and this usually involves major structural repairs above and below the roller circle, together with replacement of the roller circle components. Often, the dragline tub is also replaced by a completely new one.

IN recent years there has been an increase of interest in the flow of gases at relatively high pressures. Hydrodynamic calculation of the energy losses in the flow of gases in conduits, as well as through the porous solid materials constituting natural petroleum reservoirs, requires a knowledge of the viscosity of the fluid at the pressure and temperature involved. Although there are numerous publications concerning the absolute viscosity? of hydrocarbon gases at atmospheric pressure, there appears to be little information available relating to the effect of pressure upon the viscosity of these gases. Vogel28 determined the viscosity of methane at 32° F. and atmospheric pressure. His measurements at 32° F. were later substantiated by the measurements of Rankine and Smith17 at 63° and 212° F. Ishida12 also reported values for the viscosity of methane at atmospheric pressure. Trautz and Kurz26 measured the viscosity of propane at atmospheric pressure, from 83° to 530° F., by the use of a short capillary tube. Rap-penecker18 determined the viscosity of gaseous isopentane at elevated temperatures. Day' made an accurate investigation of the effect of pressure upon the viscosity of n-pentane and isopentane at pressures from 2 lb. per sq. in. ? to the vapor pressure at 77° F. (approximately 9.8 and 13.3 lb. per sq. in., respectively). Earhart5 reported data upon the viscosity of several natural gases measured by the long capillary-tube method. The viscosity of air, at atmospheric pressure and 73.4° F., was measured by Harrington7 by the rotating-cylinder method. Kellstrom13 has recently made an elaborate investigation of the viscosity of air at atmospheric pressure. The latter work is perhaps the most accurate investigation of the viscosity of a gas that has been made. .

Jet grouting was first introduced into North America in the late 1970's, soon after the conception of the system in Japan. However, it was not until the mid-1980's that the technique began to gain acceptance through the renewed interest and efforts of specialist U.S. geotechnical contractors. Since this time, innovations by both American users and other users worldwide have further advanced the technology, with a corresponding increase in the range of practical applications. This paper discusses the evolution of jet grouting in North America, from simple single-fluid methods to more complex triple-fluid methods, to the energy-intensive double-fluid and SuperJet methods. Case histories, illustrating a variety of jet grouting methods and applications, are cited to support the newest United States applications.

New processes of blowing with an oxygen-enriched air or gas mixtures of oxygen and steam allow the steelmaker to produce, in a basic converter, a rimmed steel low in nitrogen (0.0020 pct), phosphorous (0.020 pct), and sulphur (0.020 pct). The physical properties (ductility) of the new steels are excellent. Furthermore, from the point of view of economy, these new methods of blowing offer outstanding possibilities. THE natural occurrence of geological deposits of iron ore and local economic circumstances led European blast furnace men to work large quantities of lean iron ore with a phosphorus content as high as 0.5 pct. The iron obtained from these ores generally contains 1.5 to 2.1 pct phosphorus, 3.6 to 3.9 pct carbon, 0.3 to 0.6 pct silicon, 0.04 to 0.08 pct sulphur, and 0.3 to 1.2 pct manganese. To produce steel from this pig iron, the steelmaker has at his disposal several processes. One of the simplest and most economical is the pneumatic process developed by S. G. Thomas in 1879. This process of steelmaking, called the Thomas process, consists of blowing through the bottom of a basic bessemer converter and is used widely in Western Europe, as shown in Table I. Due to the development of tonnage oxygen plants, this process has become more important because the use of oxygen offers new possibilities of steel manufacture. Not only may the quality of the steel be improved, but liquid pig iron also may be used, the composition of which does not meet the heat requirements of the blow with atmospheric air. It is not intended to present here a detailed scientific discussion of the basic bessemer process but rather to discuss briefly its industrial possibilities in the case of rimmed steel and when blowing with atmospheric air, oxygen-enriched air, or gas mixtures of oxygen and steam. This paper is based on the current practice at Klockner-Hüttenwerk Haspe's steel division, and at six Belgian and Luxemburg steel works. The latter are members of the Liege section of the C.N.R.M. (National Institute for Metallurgical Research) and are: ARBED, John Cocker-ill, Esperance-Longdoz, HADIR, Miniere et Metal-lurgique de Rodange, and Ougree-Marihaye, most of which are working with tonnage oxygen plants.' In order to avoid any misunderstanding, it should be noted that most of the techniques to be men- tioned, or similar ones, are used currently at many steel plants in Western Europe. Background The basic converters used in Europe have a capacity of 17 to 65 tons of steel, and are similar in shape to the one in Fig. 1. The lining is brick or rammed dolomite and has a life of 250 to 500 blows. The bottom is rammed dolomite and has a life of 40 to 80 blows. IN 1925, Harry Howard Stout, then metallurgist for Phelps Dodge Corporation, while investigating the cleaning of cathode copper by various gases at elevated temper-atures below the melting point of the metal, observed in the laboratory that particles of pure copper heated in a closed tube filled with hydrogen seemingly "stuck together." By further investigation he found that there was actual crystal growth across the boundaries of the particles of pure metal; in other words, there was a complete new crystal realignment and growth throughout the newly formed copper mass. It was coalescence, not adhesion; the several parti-cles had become one unit. From this dis-covery has been developed the coalescence process, whereby copper of cathode purity is squirted out in semifabricated form from an extrusion press, by the appli-cation of about 30c0 tons pressure on a 10-in. piston. Stout decided that cathode copper pro-duced by electrolytic deposition was the logical source of the pure copper required for the coalescence process, but as there was no way of reducing the ordinary tough commercial cathodes to the small particles required he was confronted by a serious problem at the outset. Under his direction, this problem was solved by William H, Osborn and Harry Howard Stout, Jr. They developed the process and technique for producing cathode copper in brittle, friable form, and to them must be given the greater part of the credit for this phase of the development program as well as for that relating to the gas cleaning of the cathode particles.

El presente trabajo señala el proceso experimental para determinar la transferencia del calor del macizo rocoso al aire en la atmósfera subterránea, dado que a ciertas profundidades cuando la temperatura de la atmósfera subterránea excede el valor máximo admisible por las normas y estándares de confort o comodidad térmica, se presenta el riesgo ambiental térmico. En ese sentido, el estudio comprende tres etapas: la primera etapa fue dedicada al desarrollo de un modelo matemático que establezca la variación de la temperatura debido a la transferencia del calor del macizo rocoso al aire de la atmósfera subterránea; la segunda etapa consistió en validar el modelo matemático en una mina subterránea de cobre, y la tercera fue realizar una aplicación práctica en dos minas con problemas de impacto ambiental térmico. En consecuencia, la metodología propuesta para la evaluación del impacto ambiental térmico en minas subterráneas se fundamenta en procedimientos científicos plenamente sustentados, cuyos resultados indican su aplicabilidad.

A moderate thermophilic microorganisms, has been isolated (45?) from a typical sulphide mine in the region of Mo Jiang located in the southwest of China. The culture has been used to extract copper from chalcopyrite concentrates obtained from De Xing copper mine. The majority of experiments were carried out in 300mL Erlenmeyer flasks containing 150mL volumes of mineral suspension. Effects of some variable parameters such as solids concentration, pH and the concentrations of inorganic nutrients on the bioleaching of chalcopyrite obtained from De Xing copper mine were investigated. For a given concentrate the most important factor affecting the fractional copper extraction was the size of the mineral particles. The overall rate of leaching was found to be limited by the area of mineral surface. The attack started in cracks and genetic defects and finally reached the whole chalcopyrite surface. As a consequence of this, the ore showed strongly cracks. The additive of ferrous sulfate increases the bacteria activity, but did not improve chalcopyrite bioleaching. The results indicate that the nature and relative proportions of the various minerals present have been shown to be important factors.

Coal is Australia’s highest export earner and Australia is the world’s largest exporter of coal. With coal now being extracted from deeper reserves under increased risk profile, and in the interest of aiding the stability of coal supplies, Japan is funding a number of safety projects in Australia and China. The CSIRO, Australia’s premiere research organisation with the country’s largest exploration and mining research group, are currently undertaking a jointly funded Japan-Australia safety project at Anglo Coal’s new Grasstree Colliery in central Queensland. The project, entitled Mine Communication and Information for Real-time Risk Analysis, will deliver step-change capabilities in data integration, decision support, gas monitoring, geo-technical monitoring, emergency response and personnel safety to the Grasstree Colliery. Some key activities include: developing and installing underground coal mine Ethernet LAN components, real-time monitoring of gas and geo-technical sensors, MODBUS serial to TCP/IP converters, e-reporting of underground conditions, emergency guidance systems and underground trials of Internet Protocol telephone and video. The project seeks to integrate (in real time) key data sets from the comprehensive and diversified range of propriety system currently in use at mines (ventilation, strata, operations e.g. haulage, pumps, conveyors etc) into a single integrated risk management interface. The electrowinning of beryllium from beryllium oxide (BeO) using a molten-salt electrolyte composed of 56 LiF-37 BeF2-7 BeO (mole-percent) was investigated. Anodes made of porous carbon were found to be superior in current-carrying capacity and gave a lower cell voltage than other types of anode material tested. When porous carbon anodes were used) the resultant increase in anode area prevented anode passivation. The cell voltage was 3.3 volts) and electrode current efficiencies of 50 to 70 percent were obtained. The electrodeposited beryllium was recovered as beryllium powder or was coalesced to metal beads by heating to 1,300° C.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.Due to several major stope overbreak events at Toguraci, the mining method and sequence was reviewed. The method was changed from a bottom up Avoca stoping approach using waste rock as fill material and leaving sill pillars, to a top down open stope method using paste fill without sill pillars.The revised mine plan originally had stoping progressing from the current level to the base of reserves followed by extraction of the sill pillars in the upper levels at the end of mine life. Geotechnical modelling was conducted on the revised mine plan and it was recommended that the sill pillars be taken early due to the risk of them overstressing and being difficult to recover if left until the end of mine life. The backfill material above the sill pillars is unconsolidated run-of-mine development waste rock or unconsolidated rock fill (URF).Due to earlier attempts to extract sill pillars under URF not being successful in the upper areas of the mine, it was stipulated that the URF above the five remaining pillars must be consolidated prior to stoping. Cost benefit analysis showed this to be justifiable due to the high-grade nature of the ore locked up in the pillars.Grout was initially planned to be injected in one pass through self-drilling anchors (SDA) in a 2.5 m pattern. Initial attempts to do this failed due to the SDA aperture and grout consistency. A modified method was employed using poly pipe installed into open holes that were drilled through the sill pillar and into the URF from below. Repeated application at each location ensured full grout consolidation. Drill holes were used to confirm grout thickness as well as add more grout. Design thickness was based on stress analysis.Despite different URF types being present due to varying quantities of fines, the process was similar for each area. The presence of paste in the URF of one target affected the quantity of grout it received.With a design thickness of 4–5 m of consolidation in the URF, depending on stope width and dip, each consolidated pillar (to date) maintained integrity during the stope operation.
