The effects of substituting cobalt for nickel on the acid corrosion resistance of two types of austenitic stainless steel were determined. Cobalt substitutions to a maximum 2.2 weight-percent were made in types 302 and 309 stainless steels. Total immersion corrosion tests were made in 10 volume-percent hydrochloric acid, and boiling-acid tests were conducted in 65 weight-percent nitric acid and in undiluted glacial acetic acid. For modified type 309 in acetic acid, corrosion rates decreased for additions greater than 0.57 weight-percent cobalt. Corrosion rates increased as cobalt was increased up to about 1 weight percent for modified type 302 in nitric and hydrochloric acids and for modified type 309 in nitric acid, but these rates decreased with a further increase in cobalt content. A gradual increase in corrosion rates with increasing cobalt content was shown for type 302 in acetic acid and for type 309 in hydrochloric acid. Cobalt substitutions in larger amounts (above a ratio of 8 Ni to 1 Co) may increase the corrosion resistance of the austenitic stainless steels.

Mineral processing technologies are being used in the environmental arena for remediation and secondary recovery. Comminution and/or scrubbing for liberation, coupled with separation of the liberated particles, is known as soil washing. Other metallurgical unit operations have found application in remediation and recycling: size classification, gravity concentration, flotation, magnetic and electrostatic separation, eddy current separation, and liquid/solid separation. This paper presents specific examples of the use of these technologies to clean up contaminated soils and plant residues, and to recycle valuable materials from waste streams.

Completion of a project requires two separate money-focused activities, namely economic evaluation of the cash flows underlying the project (before financing) and if the economics look promising, how it can be financed. Economic evaluation might be best led by a person with a technical-operating background, whereas financing might be best led by an accountant. Both should be presented in simple language with easy to understand models. Economic evaluation has a sad and bad history because it evolved from the fringes of accounting. Anyone can become a self-appointed practitioner. Some still take pride in mathematical complexity without realising that they distance themselves from the decision-makers and alienate other team members. Today there is no evaluation modelling consistency across the mining industry and this reflects poorly on our discipline. It is not tolerated amongst our peers in engineering and accounting. In 2009 æbest practiceÆ economic evaluation modelling is well defined. It is:easy to follow;tailored to its purpose;transparent;discipline, rigour and consistency;recording of all source data; and hencequick to audit. Mantra: If you cannot readily understand my model you do not have a problem, I do! The task of the economic model is to make the range of business cases underlying the decision easy to understand. Intellectual power is used to simplify the decision to its key issues and risks and to present the full range of possible business outcomes in readily understood terms. Project team members, management and the board must be able to make their decisions with æeyes wide openÆ. A steering committee should be established to develop a set of standards and practices that could be adopted for economic modelling within the industry. The industry needs to purge itself of the undisciplined economic evaluation modelling that now characterises the discipline.

Whereas many researchers and mine engineers have conducted tests using different types of grout, grout ratios, and physical modifications of the cable to determine cable bolt load characteristics, few studies have been conducted on cables fitted with internal instruments. Those studies that have been done have concentrated on cable behavior averaged over significant cable lengths. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in Spokane, WA, are investigating the physical properties of cable bolts by replacing the conventional king wire with a modified king wire on which strain gauges have been installed . This paper documents test results on these modified cable bolts. Three tests were conducted at SRL on 1.83-m-long cables grouted into two 0.91-m-long pull-tube assemblies. Load along the cable was monitored with 20 strain gauges installed along the length of the cable. The instrumented cable bolt provided reproducible point measurements of cable load as opposed to load measurements averaged over significant cable lengths. Such point measurements can assist in interpreting the influence of cable confinement, grout quality, rock mass stiffness, and other factors. The instrumented cable bolt is a practical field and research tool because it can predict point loading along the cable and thereby allow interpolation of maximum possible loads on a cable.

The discovery of ore at Wabana was quickly followed by the mining of the ore beds where they outcropped in the land areas. The third phase, as at present carried out, consists of extensive submarine operations, which were commenced in 1908, by driving a pair of slopes out under Conception bay, opening. the mine for a distance of a mile and a half from the shore. Two other slopes, now driven just beyond the shore line, are being sunk to the submarine territory where, it is generally recognized, huge reserves of ore lie under the bay. The process of erosion of the land, the solution and re-disposition of its iron-bearing minerals in thick beds of ore have been considered elsewhere, but these bear small relation to the physical forces which have acted upon the ore-beds since the deposition of the strata. These physical changes are made manifest by jointing and cleavage and faulting. The discussion of these, the relation they bear to each other, and to the folding of the strata, is the purpose of this article. For the benefit of those who may not be familiar with the formation in which the ore occurs, I include a general summary of the geology of Be!! island and its environs; also a description of conditions that prevailed during the period of deposition, so that the reader may appreciate some of the later changes that took place during or subsequent to its emergence from the sea, and the folding or tilting of the strata to the position it now occupies.

This study investigated the operating parameters that affect the kinetic dissolution of copper and cobalt from sulfidic ores. The sulfuric acid concentration, temperature, sodium chloride concentration, particle size range, and leaching time were selected to deduce the kinetic mechanism of the leaching reaction. Other parameters, such as a stirring speed of 250 rpm and the percentage solid 10% w/v, remained constant. The results reveal that an increase in acid concentration enhances the leaching rate of copper and cobalt. Copper and cobalt dissolution was positively affected by the addition of sodium chloride. The highest leaching rates of copper and cobalt were 24.71% and 15.65%, respectively. The chemical control and diffusion control by shrinking core models are well fitted as the kinetic models representing the dissolution of the minerals. The respective activation energies for copper and cobalt dissolution of 10.92 and 31.023 kJ mol− 1 for the chemical control and 18.83 and 37.28 kJ mol− 1 for diffusion reaction control were established from temperature-based experiments.

The C.S.A. copper-lead-zinc mine, located 7 miles north of Cobar in central-western New South Wales, is the largest known mineral ocurrence in the Cobar mining field. The generally discordant orebodies occur within a strike width of 600 ft and an overall strike length of 1200 ft. They are enclosed by the steeply westdipping, west-facing sediments of the Cobar Group, and comprise lenticular steeply north-pitching and eastdipping zones of sulphide mineralization which range in composition from massive pyrite-sphalerite-pyrrhotitegalena to less massive pyrite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite varieties.The thinly bedded siltstones, shales, and greywackes enclosing the mineralization appear to have derived some of their constituents from volcanic sources. They have been metamorphosed to the greenschist facies of regional metamorphism. At least two stages of deformation and folding have occurred. The first stage folded the rocks on a south pitching fold axis into their present configuration, and superimposed a strong axial plane cleavage which subsequently guided the emplacement of the mineralization. The second stage of deformation is considered to have controlled the zonal distribution of the orebodies.

To solve the environmental and financial problems of the traditional Rotary Salt Furnace process, a new salt-free method for aluminum dross and scrap melting, ALUREC, has been developed by AGA and its partners, Hoogovens Aluminium and MAN GHH. AGA and Hoogovens Aluminium developed the main process concept and jointly carried out trials on pilot plant scale. Owing to excellent results" the partners decided to jointly erect a commercial scale test plant. The order for the design and erection of the furnace went to MAN GHH. The three companies designed the test plant and began operation in the spring of 1994. The results have been excellent and the process is expected to be a technical and commercial success.

(communication to the Secretary) : I wish to thank Mr. Webster for the copious quotations he has made from my writings, as he has given nearly all the arguments I wish to advance. It is necessary to note, however, his statement that most of his experiments were made on universal-mill plates, and that these were not subject to my condemnation of irregularity. I think this is a mistake. It is well known that universal-mill plates are finished under very different conditions of temperature, with the express purpose of regulating the tensile strength. This is a perfectly legitimate practice; but it renders almost worthless any calculations on the relations of the chemical and physical equations when the influence of such finishing is omitted. Another important point Mr. Webster has not answered at all. I have shown by an excerpt from his own table that two entirely different formulæ may be constructed; and it is undeniable that one is as valid as the other, since Mr. Webster started with no premise at all save an assumption that the effect of carbon was constant. This was an assumption pure and simple, and hence has no special virtue. The whole result of Mr. Webster's investigation is not that the effect of carbon is a constant, and that those of phosphorus and manganese are variables. On the contrary, there are two answers, with nothing to show which is right. We learn that if carbon is a constant, then phosphorus and manganese are variables; but that if phosphorus and manganese are constants, then carbon is a variable. This is a distinct advance over complete ignorance, but it is not final and satisfactory from either a mathematical or metallurgical standpoint. INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid combustible mineral substance resulting from the alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. It occurs in nature with varying percentages of mineral matter associated with and incorporated into the coalified material. If the amount of this inorganic mineral matter is sufficiently small, and if selective mining can be practiced so as to avoid the incorporation of ash- bearing material from adjacent strata and/or parting seams, the coal can be used as-mined. Otherwise, it must be given a preparation treatment. In 1980 the bulk of the approximately 525 coal preparation plants were located in the eastern half of the U.S., largely in the Appalachian and to a lesser extent in the midwest coal fields (1). Only 17 of these preparation plants were located in the west; these were in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. In the past, however, a great many more preparation plants were operated in these and other western states. The upsurge in both the domestic and world- wide demand for quality coking and steam coal will certainly lead to an increase in the number of preparation plants in the west. In fact, there has been a massive development of coal mines and their associated preparation plants across our northern border in Alberta and British Columbia, largely to serve the export coking and steam coal market. Most of the tremendous increase in newly-mined coal in the western U.S. has come from thick seams of inherently low-sulfur, low- ash coal, easy to mine selectively without significant contamination with ash-forming minerals and requiring no preparation. PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT The Big Walnut Augmentation Rickenbacker Interceptor project began in 1995with the preparation of the Scope of Services for the design of the Rickenbacker Interceptor, with service to and around the Rickenbacker Air Force base. The air base was soon to be placed under civilian control through a Port Authority, with an expected influx of businesses and services, requiring increased sanitary service capability. Due to political differences regarding annexation and other issues, the project was placed on hold. In mid 1996 the Scope of Services was rewritten with more emphasis on a tunneling option, but still only addressing the air base and surrounding tributary are a sanitary service requirements. The consultant selection process began in late 1996 with the Request for Statements of Qualifications issued in December. Three firms were selected to furnish proposals based on the revised Scope of Services that now included requirements for hydraulic modeling of the service areas and the Big Walnut Outfall (BWO) and an expanded soil investigation requirement. All three firms were requested to make presentations to the selection committee, with the committee selecting URS Greiner for further consideration and negotiation. A contract was entered into in August of 1997with URS Greiner. The major sub-consultants were Lachel and Associates, Inc., H.R.Gray and Associates and Solar Testing Laboratories, Inc. The project began with geological investigations, preliminary soil borings, well investigations, tributary area evaluations, hydraulic modeling of the BWO system and research into other projects planned for the Rickenbacker airport and surrounding area. The hydraulic modeling of the BWO and the proposed Rickenbacker Interceptor confirmed that the BWO suffered wet weather surcharging and would require augmentation to properly convey the future flows to the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant(SWWTP). The project scope expanded to include evaluation of both the Rickenbacker Interceptor and the Big Walnut Augmentation projects. Both projects previously identified in the Capital Improvements Program. The work on the expanded scope for the Big Walnut Augmentation and the Rickenbacker Interceptor began with the evaluation of a parallel 2.75 meter (108") diameter augmentation sewer from SWWTP to S.R. 317and Parsons Avenue, then continuing east along S.R. 317 as the Rickenbacker Interceptor. Dumper operators are frequently exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) in surface mines. Surface mining activities involve the amalgamation of comparatively high intensity of vibration and extended exposure durations. Efficient risk reduction mandates knowing of important phases of a task that poses a threat to health of dumper operators. So far in India very limited studies have been reported on WBV exposure with regard to surface mines. This paper evaluates WBV of dumper operators based on ISO 2631-1:1997 Standards and European Union (EU) Directive 2002 for different phases of job cycle. Six dumpers were considered for this study and the vibration measurements were made for all the four phases of the job cycle by placing the triaxial accelerometer on the operator’s seat-surface and at the seat-back, independently. The findings of the study revealed that the haulage task (loaded travel and empty travel) remains the chief contributor to vibration exposure according to seat-surface and seat-back measurements. Maximum frequency weighted root mean square (RMS) of 1.12 m/s2 and 1.09 m/s2 were reported for empty travel task for seat-surface and seat-back measurements, respectively. For seat-surface measurements based on RMS, Z axis remains as the dominant axis of vibration for all the dumpers during haulage task, whereas for seat-back measurements, the dominant axis varies between X and Y. Exposure action value (EAV) based on RMS has exceeded the threshold value of 0.5 m/s2 for all the dumpers during loaded travel and empty travel for seat-surface as well as for seat-back measurements.

Combination of gravity data and density logs makes it possible to determine the structural relief. Under a wide class of geologic conditions, the solution is unique, or limited to a single parametric system of solutions. As a useful byproduct, the method yields a new way to construct derivative maps, continue the field up or down, subtract regional anomalies, and perform smoothing. In the past, the problem of interpreting gravity anomalies in terms of structural geology was solved along two main lines: 1) A body of a certain shape and density contrast was assumed and the corresponding gravity anomaly calculated, analytically for simple bodies, graphically and/or numerically for more complex ones; then the computed anomaly was compared with the observed one, and the assumed shape corrected according to the differences between the two. 2) The anomaly is assumed to come from a warped interface between two media of different density; the relief of the warping is assumed small compared to the depth of burial, so that the structure can be approximated by a flat horizontal surface of variable density distribution. The first method is a standard technique, described in every text book on applied geophysics, and is well applicable, for bodies with predominant vertical dimension. The second one, probably first used by Tsuboi and Fuchida,' is mathematically more elegant. The formation of coke during coal liquefaction can eventually result in catastrophic failure of the conversion system. Coking typically proceeds by the formation of liquid crystals (mesophase) and the subsequent separation of these crystals from the plastic phase formed during heating of coal. The anisotropy of the mesophase makes it readily detectable in the optical microscope under polarized light. This study examines the solids formed during coal liquefaction processing by optical and electron microscopy. Observations on the relationships between the coke morphology, minerals and inert macerals are presented.

"Syncrude has developed a low energy extraction process for the recovery of bitumen from oil sand. This new process operates at a temperature of 25 °C, resulting in substantially lower energy costs and lower capital costs, especially for the thermal energy generation equipment. The process will be used in Syncrude’s Aurora Mine, which is scheduled for startup in mid 2000. The flowsheet for Low Energy Extraction includes hydraulic transport of oil sand slurry, and bitumen separation using collector and frother chemicals and air as process aids. A number of flow sheet innovations and optimizations have been included, resulting in the next generation of extraction technology. Experimental pilot plant results, engineering progress to date and areas of ongoing work will be discussed. SUMMARYThe Low Energy Extraction Process has been successfully developed for commercial implementation at Aurora. The 1996 100 tonne hour Field Pilot demonstrated that the bitumen recovery target could be met with an 11.1% grade oil sand. However, pilot plant bitumen recoveries for a lower grade oil sand were not acceptable. The subsequent flowsheet optimization study led to a new flowsheet for Low Energy Extraction, which includes a primary separation vessel, a flotation circuit for PSV middlings, and the use of middlings displacement in the PSV cone bottom with flotation underflow. A test program conducted in 1997 showed that the new flowsheet could significantly improve the bitumen recoveries for lower grade oil sands. Engineering work on process scale-up led to selection of a 30 meter diameter PSV, with a tangential feedwell. The successful development and commercialization of Low Energy Extraction for the Aurora Mine Project is a major enabling step in the Syncrude 21 program. The low energy requirements of this process allow Syncrude to develop the Aurora leases more cost effectively. The use of this process results in major capital cost savings, predominantly in the thermal energy infrastructure and also provides long term operating cost advantages for Syncrude."

The state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, appears on the national and international scene as an important producer of precious stones and the main gems are amethyst, citrine and agate. However, despite the immense potential of this mining activity, the extraction and processing of gemstones in Brazil present critical issues of infrastructure, which prevents a better development of these activities. In general, local production is still concentrated in small rudimentary mining. Recently some of these mines have begun to regularize their activities, in conjunction with the National Department of Mining Control. Besides these problems best practices for extraction activities and environmental control are not usually observed. Another problem which is placed in a critical way is the absence of aggregate value for the products of small mines. In this situation, the miners have great problems to obtain access to technology and adequate infrastructure. In most cases miners need negotiate their gems without processing, transferring most of the profit to intermediate traders. These results in heavy losses for the producer and for the communities involved. Given this scenario, the present study aimed at defining systems technically and operationally viable to be implemented in these communities in order to add value to gemstones. In this study best practices to thermochemical coloring systems, analysis of effect of raw materials and operating parameters on the final color of the gem were analyzed with attention.

THE first record of the discovery of iron ore in Missouri was Marquette's observation in 1673 of brown iron ore, or limonite, in the Mississippi River bluffs just north of the mouth of Apple Creek in southeastern Perry County. There is no record of any attempt to mine or smelt Missouri iron ores until 1815, when the Ashebran furnace was erected at the Stouts Creek shut-in near Arcadia, Iron County. Some limonite was treated in this furnace, the first iron furnace west of Ohio, but most of the ore was hematite from Shepherd Mountain and adjacent deposits. A comprehensive simulation of .the gas handling system in BHP Copper's San Manuel smelter was developed using AFT Fathom software, with the objective of minimizing SO2 emissions while maximizing smelter throughput. Once verified with plant data, the simulation quickly revealed' the complex interactions occurring between individual converters and the flash furnace. The increased understanding provided by the simulation allowed novel, counter-intuitive control strategies to be developed and tested successfully.
