Measurements have been made of the variation of internal friction with temperature for spectroscopically pure silver, and for o series of solid solutions of silver with cadmium, indium, and tin, using a Ke-type torsion pendulum apparatus. Some experiments have also been made to investigate the effect of nonmetallic impurity on grain boundary relaxation in silver. The effect of the alloying elements is to increase the grain boundary viscosity, and to raise the activation energy for grain boundary relaxation from 22,000 cal per mol for pure silver to 43,000 cal per mol for the solid solutions; the same value being obtained, within the limits of experimental error, for all the alloying elements and solute concentrations investigated. Results of the experiments show exactly the same trend as those obtained previously for a similar series of copper solid solutions. They are in agreement with the general theory of grain boundary relaxation developed by Zener and Ke, but do not seem to be in agreement with either of the mechanisms so far put forward to explain grain boundary slip. EXPERIMENTS described in this paper were made as part of an investigation into the effect of alloying elements in substitutional solid solution on grain boundary viscosity, measured by the internal friction method developed by Ke.&apos; The apparatus and experimental procedure have already been described.&apos; Preliminary work was done with spectro-scopically pure silver. Experimental Work Materials Used—All the materials were supplied in the form of % mm diam wire by Messrs. Johnson Matthey and Co. Ltd. The silver and all the alloying elements used were spectroscopically pure. Composition of the alloys is given in Table I. They were all melted and chill cast under the same conditions as the copper alloys. The ingots were rolled to 1/4 in. sq rod with intermediate annealing at 600°C in an atmosphere of cracked ammonia when necessary. These rods were then drawn to wire by standard procedure with intermediate bright anneals at suitable steps in the drawing operations. Specimens from the annealed wires were sectioned longitudinally. mechanically polished, and examined under the microscope. They were then etched and reexamined. Grain sizes were reasonably uniform for all wires, and no traces of a second constituent were observed. The wires were weighed before and after testing so as to measure any loss of the alloying element due to evaporation. The loss was less than the accuracy of measurement—< 0.1 pct of the total weight— for the Ag-In and Ag-Sn alloys, but appreciable loss of weight occurred in the case of the Ag-Cd alloys. The percentage loss is given in Table 11. X-ray diffraction photographs were taken of all thc wires after test to determine whether there was any marked preferred orientation. Results of the examination are given in Table 111. Experiments on Spectroscopically Pure Silver-— Experiments were made on specimens in which the grain diameter was small relative to that of the wire, and on one specimen in which the grains were grown by the usual strain-anneal method to extend across the full diameter of the wire. These large grained specimens will be referred to as single crystal specimens. The wires were annealed for 11/2 hr at 700°C, and experiments were made at two frequencies of vibration, 1.5 and 0.4 vibrations per sec. The variation of internal friction with temperature is shown in Fig. 1. Experiments on a second small grain specimen gave approximately the same results as for the first wire. "INTRODUCTION In compliance with those provisions of the organic act establishing the Bureau. of Mines which relate to improvement of health conditions of persons engaged in the mining, preparation, or treatment of mineral substances, sanitary surveys have been made of towns and villages housing the coal miners, metal miners, and mill and smelter employees of Utah.The purpose of the surveys is to afford studies of conditions prevailing in the various mining and smelter towns so far as concerns housing, water supplies, sewage disposal, refuse disposal the handling of foodstuffs, general sanitation, wash and. change houses, and the control of preventable diseases, all of which directly or indirectly have a bearing on the health and efficiency of employees and their families. Certain other factors have been added to the general sanitary surveys such as school and recreational facilities, which have a decided influence on contentment and efficiency. Through comparisons of favorable and unfavorable conditions and practices, and the dissemination of such information, improvements can be effected which will benefit both the employees and the employers.ACKNOWLEGMENTSAcknowledgment is made of the many courtesies shown by the officials of companies and towns visited. In recent years, the mineral applications dealing with more complex data in distributed environment have grown rapidly. Many mineral and mining organizations have to organize internally and globally distributed manufacturing and experiment sites, which share the roles of databases and other multi-services like software programs. Thus, there are commercial and technical pressures pushing the mineral software vendors to move their current service toward Web service. XML has gained wide acceptance for representing, storing and transferring structured data and documents of many kinds, especially in scientific communities. However, so far there is no such a Markup Language in mineral industry. A XML-based uniform encoding, which is called MineML(Mineral Markup Language), is proposed and developed in this project. The framework of the MineML specification is created. MineML will play the role as shared protocols within mineral domain for archiving, transferring the multi-nature data between the software packages on the desktop over the Internet and sharing the services between users at different sites. Inspired by MLA’s (Mineral Liberation Analyser, JKMRC, University of Queensland, Australia) Mineralogical Data Presentation Program, a proof-of-concept prototype of Web Service is developed here to validate and demonstrate the MineML specification. Certain strategies, specific technologies and tools are adopted to create such an environment. To accomplish that, a set of experimental MineML documents including correlated XML, XSD (schemas) and XSL(stylesheets) documents have been elaborated for archiving, presenting and transferring the mineralogical data information, with the persistence on flexibility and extensibility for generic mineral and mining data handling.

Carbon dioxide (CO2), a major component of the greenhouse gases, could be comprehensive utilized as a valuable resource to oxidize vanadium during the converter vanadium extraction process. The thermodynamic software, FactSage, was utilized to study the oxidation ability and theoretical cooling ability of using weak oxidant CO2 as coolant in vanadium-containing hot metal. Besides, experimental research on vanadium extraction in CO2 and O2 mixed blowing extracting process had been undertaken. The results indicated that the elements C, Si, V, Mn etc. could be oxidized by weak oxidant CO2, and the content of V2O3 in slag was approached to pure O2 blowing. Furthermore, CO2 had a remarkable cooling ability and the molten bath temperature kept on decreasing as CO2 blowing rate increases. This research has proved that CO2 and O2 mixed blowing in vanadium extraction process are effective.

"A number of Reports of Investigations pertaining to the extraction of potash from cal¬cined polyhalite have been made by various members of the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines. These reports describe results obtained in the study of samples of polyhalite (2CaS04.K2S04.MgS04.2H20) from deposits of possible com¬mercial importance in Texas and New Mexico.3Storch and Clarke6 in their initial paper presenting data on the properties of Texas polyhalite demonstrated the desirability of calcination and subsequent hot extraction with water as a satisfactory pronedure for treatment of this potash-bearing salt. Their preliminary data have been supplemented by an additional report7 dealing more particularly with the leaching of raw and calcined polyhalite with water and with saturated sodium chloride solu¬tions. Further data8 have been reported as a result of experiments made in a small labora¬tory rotary-tube furnace under various calcination and extraction conditions. Hot water was used as the leaching solution in all of these tests.In addition to the data on calcination and extraction, two processes as proposed by Storch and Clarke have been published by Wroth,9 and more recently a number of very promising processes have been proposed by Storoh and Fragen.10"

The design of foundations to support overhead signs is primarily based on providing adequate resistance against horizontal wind loads. The typically used subgrade reaction model for the load-deflection analysis of laterally loaded piles and shafts has been found to underpredict the capacity of shafts with length to diameter ratios less than five. The general applicability of an improved model incorporating the influence of shear and moment resistance at the shaft base is demonstrated. The detrimental effect of ground surface slope angle on the ultimate capacity is discussed, and a design chart for estimating the magnitude of the reduction in capacity is presented. A comparison between the predicted and measured responses of nine full-scale load tests performed within this study and sixteen external tests is presented. The models described are implemented in the computer program "LTBASE".

This paper describes a one-step thennal-treatment process, developed at Argonne National Laboratory, to remove all organic contaminants from the glass-fiber waste that is generated during the glass-fonning process. The recovcred glass fibers can then be recycled into new glass fibers or new glass products without adversely impacting the operations of the glass industry or the quality of its products. Our process involves shredding the waste to a manageable size and then processing it at temperatures below its melting point to remove the polymeric-coating layer. The glass industry generates more than 60,000 tons of glass-manufacturing waste annually in the glass-forming process alone. Recycling of this waste stream can keep this non-biodegradable waste out of the landfills. In addition, use of recycled glass lowers energy costs, by an average of about $5 per ton as compared to using virgin raw materials to make virgin glass fibers. This process will also reduce the emission of C02 by 17,400 tons a year and it will also reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides. Economic analysis of our process shows a potential payback of less than 2 years.

The available supply of fuel and power is a subject of importance at all times and particularly at this time. The following brief survey of fuel and power in the United States appraises the extent of the several primary sources of energy the approximate monthly demand, 1929-40; the chief centers of production and consumption; and shifts in the principal uses from 1929 to recent years. The period covers the boom year 1929, the years of the great depression, the more normal year 1937, the recession in 1938, the year 1939, and 1940 (which was affected by armament programs). In some instances, the data for 1939 and 1940 are preliminary. The four primary sources of fuel and power are coal, petroleum, natural gas, and water power. Wood fuel, important in some regions, and foreign trade in natural gas and hydroelectricity represent a relatively small part of the energy supply and are not considered in this study. The tonnages shown are in terms of coal, based upon the calorific or B. t. u. equivalents of the several sources of power. In practice, the usable heat or energy varies according to the type of equipment available for its use. For example, the efficiency of turbine water wheels and internal-combustion engines is much higher than that of steam plants and household-heating devices.

The column flotation technology, at first developed for application in mineral dressing, has received special attention in processing of non-mineral dispersions as a result of its low cost, high efficiency and relatively simple operation. This paper presents the results from the operation of a laboratory flotation column for the separation of vegetable oil and soap from aqueous industrial effluents, The flotation system was operated under continuous countercurrent conditions without and with additions of a cationic collector. The experiments show that it is possible to separate about 80% of the organic phase in a rougher flotation stage. These results suggest that the recovery of the organic phase is highly dependant on the dispersion characteristics (i.e. bubble size, gas holdup and bubble surface area flux) and the existing an optimum bubble size from which either smaller or larger, the recovery of the organic decreases.

Determinadas aplicações de magnetos pulsados ocorrem sob a ação de campos magnéticos elevados, (= 100 T). Esses campos provocam efeitos tais como, elevadas tensões tangenciais (hoop stress) produzidas pela força de Lorentz e conversão de parte da energia elétrica em calor (efeito Joule) que deterioram o material. Assim uma combinação de alta resistência mecânica (&gt; 1 GPa) e alta condutividade elétrica (mínimo de 70% IACS International Annealed Copper Standard) é necessária por parte destes materiais. No presente trabalho, foram desenvolvidos fios condutores para possível utilização em magnetos pulsados. O cobre e a liga nióbio-titânio foram escolhidos por possuírem boa condutividade elétrica e boa resistência mecânica, respectivamente; além de serem imiscíveis na temperatura ambiente. Inicialmente foram utilizados fios de cobre puro e Cu/NbTi, os quais foram convertidos em fios por trefilação. Após o processamento, os fios foram introduzidos em tarugos de cobre OFHC (Oxigen Free High Conductivity) e reprocessados. Foram produzidos 2 compósitos variando os tratamentos térmicos. Os compósitos obtiveram uma satisfatória interação matriz/filamento, o que melhor combinou propriedades mecânicas e elétricas foi o que atingiu limite de resistência de 547,8 MPa e condutividade 85,98% IACS.

In this theoretical paper, a transport-reaction mechanism is suggested for the enhancement of the rate of vaporization of metals, or other materials, brought about by the process of convection and condensation. Based on theoretical reasoning it is predicted that, when there is a temperature gradient surrounding the heated object, a slight increase in the rate of vaporization brought about by natural convection is enhanced further as a result of condensation of the vapor close to the surface of the object. In order to derive the effective vapor-concentration profile, consideration is given to the super saturation of the vapor necessary for the homogeneous nucleation of the condensed phase from the vapor. For the formulation of the rate equation based on this mechanism, adequate information should be available on the transport properties of gases and vapors at elevated temperatures and the method of calculating nucleation pressures of the vapor. The methods of deriving such data are discussed in the paper and a rate equation is calculated for the vaporization of iron in helium for various temperature gradients in the boundary layer. Considerations are also given to the effect of oxygen on rates of vaporization of metals under isother ma1 and nonisotherma1 conditions. THE study of the methods of enhancement or retardation of basically transport-controlled vaporization reactions is of theoretical interest with possible practical implications. There are several ways of bringing about such effects. For example, Turk-dogan, Grieveson, and Darken1 demonstrated that the rates of vaporization of metals under isothermal conditions were increased by several orders of magnitude, up to the maximum rate attainable in vacuo, by introducing some reacting gas into the inert atmosphere surrounding the metal. Such an effect is brought about by the interaction of the counter-diffusing reacting gas and metal vapor in close proximity of the metal-gas interface. Another case which is often experienced in practice is that of vaporization affected by natural convection. Although several theoretical and experimental studies of this problem have already been made, no detailed consideration has been given to the possible effects of condensation of the vapor in the boundary layer on vaporization rates, which constitutes the subject matter of this paper. BASIC CONCEPT OF ENHANCED DIFFUSION-LIMITED VAPORIZATION When a heated object, for example a metal sphere, is submerged in a fluid medium, heat is transferred from the surface of the object to its surroundings by four simultaneously occurring transfer processes: i) free-molecular conduction at the gas-solid interface over the distance equal to the mean free path of the gas, ii) conduction and convection through the fluid-dynamic boundary layer, iii) latent heat of mass transferred, and it!) radiation. The free-molecular conduction becomes pronounced only when the total pressure in the system is very low, e.g., below 1 mm Hg. Therefore, this term may be neglected for ordinary pressures. At low mass-transfer rates, due to vaporization of the object, the contribution of process iii) to the heat transfer can also be neglected. Finally, since the temperature profile is not affected by radiation, the latter need not be considered. Sanes are utilized to make molds for metal castings in the foundry industry. Approximately a half ton of sand is disposed of for each ton of metal cast in this country. The purpose of this investigation was to study and develop a process to separate chromite sand and silica sand from reclaimed sands for a steel foundry. Physical separations were utilized to yield silica and chromite sands with desirable molding properties. Several different separation methods, including electrostatic, magnetic, and various gravitational approaches were examined. Experimental results are presented. A method was developed to separate chromite sand from silica sand after mechanical or thermal reclamation. The reclaimed sands are passed through a rare earth magnetic separator to separate chromite sand and magnetic impurities from non-magnetic silica sand. Chromite sand can be recovered from magnetic silica sand or magnetic impurities very effectively using a wet concentrating table. The applicabilities of the separation methods are discussed.

"Mineralogical techniques including microscopic methods, reflected and transmitted light microscopy, Cathodoluminescence (CL) and Scanning Electron Microscopy equipped with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS), are useful in determining the quality of industrial minerals. They are essential for studying ores and metallurgical products including the evaluation of physical characteristics of the mineral, paragenetic relationships, associations with possible deleterious contaminants (e.g., sulphides), spatial distribution within the ore zones and liberation characteristics. The methods are inexpensive, and provide quick identification and distinction among the industrial minerals and the gangue minerals in a section. Additionally, SEM is necessary to reveal complex textural sequences and 3-D measurements of minerals and quick semi-quantitative analysis.Common analytical methods include Electron Microprobe Analyses (EMPA) and Whole Rock Analysis (WRA) (commonly with XRF and ICP) for major and trace elements. The EMPA analyses of industrial minerals provide information on the purity of the analyzed grains as opposed to the bulk chemical analyses that may be misleading due to contamination by other associated common “gangue” minerals. These techniques have been implemented for the case studies of wollastonite, V-magnetite and muscovite. Therefore, these methods can provide extremely useful information and lead to the implementation of a successful pilot-testing programme.MINERALOGICAL EVALUATION OF DEPOSITSDespite their considerable and increasing economic importance, industrial mineral deposits have traditionally been neglected by economic geologists, and are only rarely the subject of the detailed analysis widely lavished on metallic mineralization. Moreover, in that they generally represent concentrations of “normal” rock-forming minerals, albeit commonly with particular textural and/or geochemical features, they have tended to fall between the mainstream of petrogenetic studies and mineral deposit research (Grammatikopoulos 1999). For many industrial minerals, little attention has been paid to the factors responsible for their local concentration as large and high-grade bodies. This comparative neglect has particularly been the case for minerals such as talc and wollastonite, widespread in metamorphic rocks, in which they are reasonably interpreted as components of assemblages derived, respectively, from pelitic sediments, ultramafic igneous rocks and siliceous limestones."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), is conducting research to test, evaluate, improve or modify coal mine fire-fighting strategies and methodologies through large-scale tests. Since wood is the second most abundant fuel available during a coal mine fire, it was decided that series of large-scale wood crib fire tests were needed to measure the products of combustion and to observe the capability of commonly available direct application fire suppression equipment, namely, fire extinguishers, water and gas-enhanced foam. This paper discusses the wood crib fire tests, provides insight into the products of combustion and describes observations made during the application of the fire suppression agents.

The Cement Deep Soil Mixing (CDSM) method introduces and mixes cementitious materials with in situ soils using hollow-stem rotating shafts equipped with a cutting tool at the tip and mixing paddles above the tip. CDSM generally produces a soil-cement panel consisting of three overlapping soil-cement columns. The soil-cement panel is then extended to form walls, which are effective for excavation support and groundwater control due to the continuity and low permeability of soil-cement walls. Two design approaches could be taken in the application of CDSM for excavation support: 1) single wall design and 2) gravity wall design. The former one is treated as a wall technology and the latter one is treated as a soil stabilization method. This paper will review the CDSM equipment and installation procedures for the construction of these two types of soil-cement walls. Four case examples are used to illustrate the design and application of these two types of soil-cement walls.

Isothermal temper-embrittlement studies were conducted on a 5140 steel at various temperatures for times as long as 3000 hr. Specimens from the embrittled steel were subjected to impact tests, metallographic examination, microhardness, and lattice-parameter measurements. SEVERAL of the steels in the low alloy group are subject to a pronounced decrease in impact energy if held within, or cooled slowly through, a range of temperatures below the lower critical. This phenomenon, known as temper embrittlement, is quite pronounced in the chromium steels of which AISI 5140 is typical. This study considered the response of one heat of 5140 steel when embrittled isothermally at various temperatures for times as long as 3000 hr. Excellent reviews of the work done in the field of temper embrittlement have been written by Hollomonl and Woodfine.&apos; Both authors list the various theories which have been advanced to explain temper embrittlement. Some of the mechanisms considered were: 1—a transformation below 700°C; 2—an allotropic modification of iron; 3—precipitation from the ferrite of such compounds as carbides, nitrides, phosphides, or chromium oxides; 4—decomposition of retained austenite; 5—modification of special carbides; 6—grain-boundary segregation; and 7—selective distribution of carbides. The present study investigated the changes in hardness, Meyer&apos;s number, impact properties, micro-structure, and lattice parameter which occurred on embrittlement. Previous studies considered the influence of microstructure and of prior austenitic grain size3 on the response of 5140 steel to temper embrittlement. Equipment and Procedure All samples were taken from one heat of 5140 steel; the chemical composition of this steel was: 0.43 pct C, 0.86 pct Mn, 0.020 pct P, 0.019 pct S, 0.27 pct Si, 0.84 pct Cr, 0.10 pct Ni, 0.06 pct Mo, 0.10 pct Cu, and the remainder Fe. The material was received as % in. rounds. This stock was cut down to blanks measuring approximately 0.425~0.425~2.196 in. Heat Treatment: The rough blanks were normalized at 1600°F (870°C) for 1 hr, then austenitized at 1600°F (870°C) for 1 1/2 hr, and quenched into an agitated oil bath. The specimens were tempered at 1275°F (690°C) for 5 hr and water quenched. These tempered specimens were designated as the toughened state. Embrittling Treatments: The tempered bars were divided into sets and subjected to the various embrittling treatments listed in Table I. Temperatures from 750" to 1050°F were investigated for times of 1 to 3000 hr. Special tests to determine the effect of heating a short time at a higher temperature after long-time embrittlement at some lower temperature were also conducted. All specimens were water quenched at the end of the embrittling cycle, then ground and notched to obtain standard Charpy V-notch specimens. Impact Tests: The bars were fractured in a 260 ft-lb Charpy impact unit; specimens were fractured at temperatures ranging from —315°F to room temperature. Fixed temperatures used consisted of —315°F with liquid nitrogen, —115°F with dry ice and acetone, and 32°F with ice and water. Intermediate temperatures were obtained by suspending the bars in a jig over the liquid nitrogen, dry ice and acetone, or ice and water.

Process mineralogy provides the mineralogical information required by geometallurgists to address the inherent variation of geological data. The successful beneficiation of ores mostly depends on the ability of mineral processing to be efficiently adapted to the ore characteristics, liberation being one of the most relevant mineralogical parameters. The liberation characteristics of ores are intimately related to mineral texture. Therefore, the characterisation of liberation necessarily requires the identification and quantification of those textural features with a major bearing on mineral liberation. From this point of view, grain size, bonding between mineral grains and intergrowth types are considered the most influential textural attributes. While the quantification of grain size is a usual output of automated current technologies, information about grain boundaries and intergrowth types is usually descriptive and difficult to quantify to be included in the geometallurgical model.Aiming at the systematic and quantitative analysis of the intergrowth type within mineral particles, a new methodology based on digital image analysis has been developed. In this work, the ability of this methodology to achieve a more complete characterisation of liberation is explored by the analysis of chalcopyrite in the rougher concentrate of the Kansanshi copper-gold mine (Zambia). Results obtained show that the method provides valuable textural information to achieve a better understanding of mineral behaviour during concentration processes. The potential of this method is enhanced by the fact that it provides data unavailable using current technologies. Pegmatite dykes containing lithium minerals and beryl occur dose to the borders of intrusive masses of granitic rock in the Winnipeg River area of Manitoba. Both vertical and flat-lying dykes are present. Most of the pegmatites consist of zones, containing characteristic mineral assemblages, arranged more or Jess parallel to the borders of the dykes. Five important lithium minerals are present; each occurs in a separate zone, but all the lithium-bearing zones are situated toward the centres of the pegmatites. Spodumene is the most abundant and widespread of the lithium minerals and occurs as small crystals intimately intergrown with quartz. Beryl is not an important constituent of the lithium pegmatites, but when .present, occurs outside the lithium zones, toward the margins of the -dykes. Beryl is most common in dykes containing few or no lithium minerals. The mineral assemblage in the beryl zone of the lithium dykes is the same as that of the beryl dykes. The attitude and internal structure, particularly zoning, of the pegmatite dykes, and the texture and assemblages of the constituent minerals, have an important bearing on exploration, development, and mining of these pegmatites, and on the extraction of various mineral products from them.
