The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. When a thin film of volatile matter is deposited under vacuum on a polished coal surface, and the coated surface is examined microscopically in plane-polarized reflected light, colour changes are observed which are characteristic of the various macerals present. The colour changes appear to be mainly due to interference between light reflected at the upper surface of the film and at the film!coal interface. A variety of source materials for the volatile matter required have been tested, including powdered bituminous coal, coal tars, boron oxide, and certain resins. The fire end explosion hazard of excessive coal-dust deposits in mines has been recognized for many years, and important measures have been developed for reducing dust formation and to alley loose dust near its source. Nevertheless, in the course of normal mining it has been estimated that 1 to 3 percent (in some thin, friable seams up to 10 percent) of the total coal mined is reduced to dust of through-20-mesh fineness. In highly mechanized, continuous mining operations the production of fines is even greater. Most dust is trapped near its point of origin and removed from the mine, but large quantities are transported by the air current and by haulage into entries, where the greatest proportion settles on the floor and the balance on the rib and roof surfaces. The latter is generally finer in particle size than the floor dust; this, coupled with its more advantageous position for dispersion, makes the rib-roof dust (also to be referred to as overhead dust) a greater potential explosion hazard.

This paper discusses the use of a reacting CFD model to determine chalcopyrite kinetics in a drop tube furnace and to predict the reaction of a chalcopyrite concentrate in the reaction shaft of an industrial smelter. Reacting CFD codes can be applied to determine the consequences of the interaction of gas with particles and therefore improve the ability to derive kinetic parameters that take into account the different temperature and oxidation histories that different particles will see. This paper describes the application of such a model to derive improved kinetic parameters for the pyrolysis and oxidation of chalcopyrite. The improved kinetic parameters derived from the drop tube studies are used to simulate chalcopyrite concentrate reactions in the reaction shaft of an industrial smelter. The reaction shaft model includes the effects of turbulent fluid mechanics, entrained flow mixing, turbulent particle dispersion, heterogeneous particle reactions, radiative and convective heat transfer, and surface and bath deposition rates. Particle reaction and composition characteristics are predicted as a function of particle trajectory and deposition and are used to aid in evaluating shaft performance.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. An integration of S isotopic, fluid and mineralogical data for granitoid-related mineralisation showed that the porphyry systems had a predominantly subcrustal magma source, but the inner magma pulse of two-mica granite in the Fleet pluton was derived mainly from reduced sediments. The porphyry-style mineralisation formed from boiling fluids at high crustal levels, with a moderately saline fluid percolating down to the upper veins as they cooled but not penetrating the deeper Talnotry deposit. Veins in peripheral greywackes have a significant magmatic component but also incorporated CO2-rich components and metals released by dewatering of host sediments in response to granitoid intrusion. The low grade of regional metamorphism resulted in the significant fluid input from country rocks which led to the more exotic mineral compositions, especially where argillaceous sediments were involved

In this study, a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) and following acid leaching techniques were carried out to produce boron carbide (B4C) powder. First, B2O3 was obtained through calcinations of H3BO3 at 1073 K for 2 hours. Then, the glassy B2O3 obtained was crushed and sieved. In the SHS experiments, different amounts of B2O3, Mg and C black were used. The SHS product was obtained in the form of black, spongy solid. In the leaching step, the SHS product was leached in a HCl solution to eliminate the MgO and Mg3B2O6. The effect of acid concentration on the selective leaching was studied at different concentration range, solid/liquid (S/L) ratio, and temperature. The products obtained were characterized by using X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis and SEM techniques.

Commonly used predictors of ground vibration from blasting, being linear in log-log plot, do not model the underlying physics of wave attenuation. Amplitude of the wave decays with distance due to geometrical spreading and inelastic attenuation producing a nonlinear carve in log-log scale. The nolinear decay of seismic waves has also been observed from non-explosive sources, such as, pile driving, drop hammer, traffic, etc. The improved predictors, by explicitly taking these two mechanisms into consideration, model the data trend extremely well at all distance ranges. Actual field data from different studies have been used to validate the improved models.

"The influence mechanism of chlorite on the flotation of pyrrhotite was investigated through flotation tests, Zeta potential measurements, optical microscope photos, solution ion measurements and absorption measurements. It is observed that, the addition of chlorite influences the flotation of pyrrhotite seriously. The IEP (isoelectric point) of pyrrhotite and chlorite is 7.6 and 4.3 respectively, in the condition of slight alkalinity, both pyrrhotite and chlorite are negatively charged, and the hetero-aggregation will not occur. With the existence of oxygen in solution, the iron ions are dissolved from pyrrhotite surface because of the oxidation of pyrrhotite during pulp conditioning. The dissolved iron ions adsorb onto the surface of chlorite in the forms of iron hydroxyl and iron hydroxide, and the adsorption results in the opposite charge of chlorite surface. As a result, the hetero-aggregation between pyrrhotite and chlorite occurs. The adsorption of chlorite changes the surface property of pyrrhotite and restricts the adsorption of amyl xanthate onto pyrrhotite surface, and then decreases the flotability of pyrrhotite.INTRODUCTIONIn sulfide ores processing, magnesium silicate bearing gangue minerals often report to the concentrate causing downstream processing problems as well as increased smelting costs. Talc,chlorite and serpentine are gangue minerals commonly encountered in complex sulfide ores (Engel, Middlebrook, & Jameson, 1997; Pietrobon et al., 1997; Witney & Yan, 1997; Chen, Grano, Sobieraj, & Ralston, 1999a, 1999b; Bremmell, Fornasiero & Ralston, 2005; Senior & Thomas, 2005; Wang, Somasundaran, & Nagaraj, 2005; WieseHarris & Bradshaw, 2007). All of them are characterized with uniform crystal structures consisting of silicon-oxygen tetrahedron and magnesium-oxygen octahedron. The magnesium-oxygen octahedron layers are broken during the liberation of serpentine to expose the magnesium-oxygen bonds with strong ionicity and hydration, which results in natural hydrophilicity of serpentine. In water, the hydroxyl on serpentine surface ruptures and dissolves into the aqueous phase while the Mg2+ remains, resulting in surface positive charge (Tao, 2012). As serpentine has a positive potential at alkaline condition, it is therefore likely that it will attach through electrostatic attraction to the negatively charged mineral surface and reduce both the flotation rate and recovery of target minerals (Lu et al., 2011). For talc, characterized as good natural hydrophobicity, the liberation comes from the interlaminar fracture to remain molecular bonds on surface with weak hydration. Being naturally hydrophobic, talc easily reports to flotation concentrates, thus reducing concentrate grade (Shortridge, Harris, Bradshaw, & Koopal, 2000; Beattie, Huynh, Kaggwa, & Ralston, 2006). Meanwhile, both molecular bonds and magnesium-oxygen bonds are exposed on chlorite surface when liberation occurs, resulting in moderate natural hydrophobicity between serpentine and talc (Tao, 2012). And thus the mechanisms of influence of chlorite on sulfide ores are more difficult to study."

Relative permeability curves represent an important element of special core analyses, but challenges remain in obtaining valid results and the extrapolation and use of existing permeability results is problematic. This situation is compounded in cases where core properties are altered from changes in effective stress. During the production of oil and gas reservoirs, the effective stress changes as a result of changes in pore pressure or temperature. Therefore, changes in rock properties such as porosity and permeability will occur and will consequently influence reservoir performance calculations. An experimental program was carried out to understand the behavior of dense, reconstituted sand samples at low effective stress states. Drained triaxial compression tests were set up to study the effect of stress alteration on relative permeability data through porous media. Initially, a saturation stage was performed followed by isotropic loading to bring the core sample to reservoir fluid and stress conditions. Then, while axial (deviatoric stress) loading was applied to the sample, a series of absolute and relative permeability tests was performed under steady state flow at different levels of strain during pre and post peak shearing stress. The stress-strain behavior results from the study revealed that the absolute permeability decreased during isotropic loading (compaction) and increased during shearing (dilation). However, the shape of relative permeability curve changed from contraction to dilation and showed higher initial kro and the lower initial kro respectively. The goal of this project was to understand the behavior of both absolute and relative permeability at different stresses. It is expected that geomechanical processes will be adopted for special core analyses to support the current integration of geomechanics into reservoir engineering. This will be required if, during SAGD, conventional and/or unconventional reservoir simulation, reservoir engineers implement a proper set of relative permeability data at each in situ state of stress, instead of constant curves throughout the field?s life.

Al2O3,-WC Composite powder for cutting tools was synthesized by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis using A1 powder as a reducing agent. WC, W2C and Al2O3 were concurrently formed in WO3Al-C system. It was found that the complete reaction was achieved with excessive addition of carbon and appropriate processing parameters such as degree of dilution, particle size of aluminum, compaction pressures of green pellets and carbon source. The final product which was leached by 50% HN03+HF diluted solution was consisted of Al2O3-55wt% WC having 2-3um of mean particle size.

"Natural fibers, as a class of material, are attracting the interest of engineering sectors owing to specific advantages such as comparatively reduced cost and lower density as well as environmental benefits associated with renewability and biodegradability. For industrial applications, thermal properties, among others, are required. These are major requirements, especially in the case of an insulating natural fiber. In the present work, thermal properties of the curaua were investigated by photothermal techniques, i.e., the open photoacoustic cell and a method based upon the monitoring of the temperature evolution as a function of time. This investigation, in tum, permitted to evaluate two important thermal properties: the thermal diffusivity and the specific heat capacity of the curaua fibers. Indirectly, by means of simple mathematical relations, the thermal conductivity was also obtained. The results were compared with other materials and characterize the curaua fiber as an efficient insulator.IntroductionMaterials are gaining attention in recent years owing to their benefits for the environment as compared to synthetics. Being biodegradable, yearly renewable and recyclable, the natural planted-based are considered fully sustainable [1]. In particular, their life-cycle, from growing to industrial processing, absorbs as much C02 as it is emitted and makes them neutral with respect to greenhouse gases responsible for global warming [2]. Typical examples of these environmentfriendly materials are the lignocellulosic fibers that have been used in simple items such as ropes, baskets, textile, modest roofing, etc, since the beginning of our civilization [3]. In the past few decades, these natural fibers have been extensively investigated [ 4-1 O] as a possible reinforcement phase of polymer composites in substitution for synthetic fibers. In fact, engineering application of lignocellulosic composites are today in the market, especially in the automobile industry [11-13]. Out of the hundreds available natural fibers, only part of them exhibits superior properties to be qualified for composite reinforcement."

With the inauguration of Petroleum Technology this year, and approval by the Board to add an Assistant Secretary to the New York staff to serve the Petroleum and Coal Divisions, the Petroleum Division looks forward to greater opportunities and responsibilities. An improved medium of publication offers further incentive to engineers and investigators in the oil industry to make contributions. The authorization by the Board of Directors of a new Assistant Secretary is an appreciation of the splendid contributions made to the industry by the open forum of the Petroleum Division. It is also a recognition of the possibilities of greater service to the membership along the lines established ten to fifteen years ago by DeGolyer, Fohs, Ambrose and Lovejoy, to mention a few leaders. It isexpected that the new officer will spend a substantial part of his time in the field, visiting the student sections, the respective Divisions, helping in the arrangement of papers and Section meetings and intensifying interest in the Institute. The Petroleum Division will hold three meetings this year. The Fall Meetings will be held on Oct. 6 and 7 in San Antonio and on Oct. 20 and 21 in Los Angeles. The programs for these meetings will deal chiefly with engineering research and production engineering problems. Papers on production statistics and general economics of the industry are reserved for the Annual Meeting in New York. The annual production symposium and statistics are accepted as standard for the industry. With continuously deeper penetration into the earth in search for and exploitation of petroleum, it is necessary to have a better understanding of reservoir conditions and to place more phases of the operation under engineering control. Among the subjects relating to reservoir conditions tha thave been proposed for the fall meeting programs are phase equilibria at high pressures, interfacial tension between oil and water, the flow of oil and water through sands, the chemistry of films and underground temperatures. Investigations relating to control of operations include methods of continuously logging while drilling both visually and electrically, methods of studying drilling samples, properties of drilling fluids, improved cementing practices for isolating thin sands under high-temperature conditions and gas conservation, particularly production from high-pressure reservoirs. Additional suggestions of general themes or individual subjects will be welcomed, since it is desirable to build a backlog of material for Petroleum Technology. 9

The Kwyjibo deposit is an iron oxide Cu-REE-F-Mo-Au mineralization of Mesoproterozoic age located in the Grenville Province approximately 120 km NE of Sept-Îles, Quebec (Figure 1). Occurring along the SE margin of the Canatiche granitic complex, the deposit is composed of several polymetallic showings that are related to different textural facies of magnetite. The mineralization process at Kwyjibo is complex, and is divided into Early Granitophile, Magnetite, Main Polymetallic and Specular Hematite stages (Cayer et al., submitted for publication). The Main Polymetallic stage, comprising chalcopyrite, pyrite, fluorite, molybdenite and REE-bearing minerals, is superimposed on pre-existing magnetiterich rocks. Discovered by SOQUEM Inc. in 1993, the Kwyjibo deposit shares many characteristics with other hydrothermal polymetallic iron oxide deposits around the world. Foose and McLelland (1995) suggested that this class of mineralization could occur in the Grenville Province. However, only a few polymetallic occurrences are known to be associated with low-Ti iron oxide deposits in the Grenville. Kwyjibo is one of the most significant examples of a polymetallic iron oxide deposit to have been found in the Grenville Province to-date.

During 1996 and 1997, Oregon experienced flooding on a scale not seen in many years. Some gravel pits located near rivers experienced erosion. In several cases, breaches occurred between the gravel pit and the river. Initial evaluation of several sites that experienced these breaches showed that impacts to the river system were complex and varied significantly from site to site. The impacts to the adjacent river system may be viewed as positive and negative. Several flood-plain-mining sites in Oregon located in areas of historic river flow reverted to active riverbeds. In many cases, state and federal fisheries biologists and university researchers saw the resulting increase in channel complexity and habitat as favorable. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries —Mined Land Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLR) is studying the effects to the off-channel areas that resulted from the 1996 floods. More data is needed to make sound flood-plain decisions regarding mining.

This paper presents a method of predicting the recovery and performance of a five-spot steam injection project, in which a realistic approach to pattern sweepout efficiencies is made. Published methods for radial systems were modified for the five-spot pattern by approximating the stream lines with straight lines radiating from the injection well and then converging to the producing well. In each radial segment, the position of the steam front and the temperature profile ahead of the steam front were determined by heat balance equations, which included an estimation of heat losses to surrounding formations. The location of the saturations behind the cold water front was determined from a Buckley-Leverett solution to the material balance equation. Results from this program show steamflood recovery in a five-spot pattern to be considerably less than that predicted for true linear or radial flow systems. For a specific reservoir containing 900-cp oil, a steamflood in a purely radial flow system was predicted to recover more than 75 percent of the original oil in place when 2 PV of water had been injected as steam. A five-spot steamflood with otherwise identical properties was predicted to recover 10 percent of the original oil in place when 0.15 PV of water had been injected as steam and to recover almost no oil thereafter. A cold water five-spot flood in this system was predicted to recover approximately W percent of the oil in place with I PV of water injected. For a five-spot pattern in an example reservoir with 10-cp oil, steam injection similarly showed lower ultimate recovery than water injection but no improvement in recovery rule. Introduction The thermal recovery method considered in this study is steam injection in a five-spot pattern. Pattern steam injection has been given little attention in the past, possibly because of some rather obvious disadvantages. Unless steam temperature is maintained throughout the entire swept area, the process will revert to simple waterflood with all heat being lost prior to reaching the oil bank. Also, the oil viscosity reduction takes place near the steam front and not around the producing wellbore, so that low producing rates must still be endured. This is the reason for the success of the steam stimulation, or cyclic injection, in which the fluids are produced from the same well used for injection. On the other hand, steamflooding can offer some advantages. Oil displacement is by four methods: (1) mechanical displacement by the condensed water, (2) viscosity reduction of the crude oil, (3) swelling of the crude oil, and (4) distillation of the crude oil in the steam zone. Although dependent upon the crude, laboratory experiments have shown displacements up to 80 percent by steamflooding. In addition, steam is a good heat transport medium, since it is cheap and has a high heat content. Previous Investigations Previous publications have reported methods for predicting recovery in a steamflood for linear and radial systems. Since no pattern sweep efficiency is taken into consideration, the recovery even from a radial system must be greater than from more realistic geometries such as the very common five-spot patterns. Probably the broadest coverage is given by Willman who reported experimental results and offered a method of predicting recovery for a radial flow system. They concluded that both hot water and steam injection recover more oil than an ordinary waterflood, and that steam injection could yield recoveries "as much as 100 percent greater than by water flood." They also concluded that both the heat requirements for a reservoir and the residual oil remaining in the reservoir after steam injection were independent of the amount of oil originally in place, that short exploitation times were desirable, and that a high percentage of net sand in the reservoir with a high initial oil saturation was desirable. The method assumes that the flood occurs in three concentric cylindrical zones: (1) an inner steam zone, (2) a central hot water zone, and (3) an outer cold waterflood zone. Displacement in the steam zone is based on laboratory-determined residual oil saturations while the hot water and cold water zones use the conventional Buckley-Leverett equations. Track in underground bituminous coal mines was investigated, and technology was taken from other industries in order to obtain information on conditions that impair the safety and efficiency of the track and to develop guidelines and useful information on the construction, inspection and maintenance of mine track. Volume 1 contains information on the investigations, observed track conditions, useful technology from railroads and other industries, derivations of track condition descriptors and recommended limits, conclusions, and recommendations. Volume 2, Guidelines, contains recommended standards and practices for mine track. It includes the relation of track conditions to safe speeds; descriptions and limits for measurable track features such as gage; descriptions of conditions for track components that are normally not measurable, such as subbase soils; construction requirements and techniques, inspection requirements and methods; and methods for managing and performing track maintenance work. As a research product, it does not repeat the summary or derivations. Volume 3, Inspection Handbook, summarizes recommended standards and procedures from Volume 2 and provides related information for' ready reference by inspectors in the mines. For the last 150 years, subsidence damage to the surface has been an unavoidable phenomenon associated with underground coal mining. In particular, the mechanization of mining methods in multiple seam mining and the concentration of mining activities in densely populated European metropolitan areas (e.g., Ruhr, Upper Silesian industrial region) have led to mining having a very strong influence on the earth?s surface. In both these regions, surface subsidence of more than 20m has been reported up to now in comparison to the original state. Underground coal mining in these regions strongly impairs all kinds of surface use, such as urban and industrial development, infrastructure (roads, waterways, and railways) and pipelines?without restricting the functionality of those objects to a greater extent. Demanding and, in some cases, globally unique engineering solutions have been developed and implemented for this purpose. The previously mentioned mining and industrial regions are still very strongly characterized by the (increasingly declining) coal industry and will remain dependent to a large extent and for an indefinite period on artificial drainage measures because subsidence that has already occurred is irreversible. This paper will primarily discuss the prediction of subsidence that is caused by intensive multiple seam mining and its influence on surface objects (e.g., underground pipelines). However, an approach for predicting ground uplifts due to rising mine water as a consequence of mine closures will also be described.

When designing excavation support systems in urban environments, it is often necessary to consider the effect of vertical surcharge loads from adjacent structures. Several methods are used in practice to establish the horizontal surcharge-induce pressure on the excavation support. According to the experience of the authors, these methods often seem to overestimate the effect of the surcharge and may have significant impact on the construction costs. This paper explores several of these procedures and provides a discussion as to the reasons for the differences in surcharge effect predictions between different procedures. It also provides practical recommendations for designers dealing with excavation support design.

Soldering material widely used is Sn-Pb alloy, which have low melting point and excellent electrical, strength properties and wettability. However, Pb is one of the toxic elements, which is undesirable due to environmental and safety reasons, thus Pb-free alternative alloy is preferred for new soldering materiaL Sn-Ag and Sn-Zn based alloys have been viewed as very promising candidates, among many potential substitutes. Addition of third element to these alloys will decrease melting point of the alloys. Hence, Sn-Ag-In and Sn-Zn-Mg alloys are expected to be suitable for replacing Sn-Pb solder alloy. In order to dcsign new Pb-free soldering materials, it is crucial to understand precise thermodynamic properties and phase diagrams of alloy systems. In the present work, ion current ratios of Ag to In and Mg to Zn were measured for Sn-Ag-In and Sn-Zn-Mg alloys by mass spectrometry, respectively. Also, the authors reviewed the thermodynamic properties of terminal binary alloys determined by other researchers and evaluated a thermodynamic functions to express the excess Gibbs free energy of each binary alloy. Thermodynamic functions to express the excess Gibbs free energy of liquid Sn-Ag-In and Sn-Zn-Mg ternary alloys were determined, utilizing the assessed Gibbs free energy of terminal binary alloys with the measured ion current ratios using mass speetrometer.
