Developing a mining venture in a foreign country, particularly in South Africa, can be a real challenge to those involved in the operation. The mining division of Southland Energy Corp. was asked to offer consultative support to the New Union Gold Mine, located in the Giyani District, Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, to aid in their expansion from an approximately 65 tonne per day exploration- exploitation project into a full scale mining operation of 300 tpd by January, 1987 with further expansion to 600 tpd by mid-year. This paper ad- dresses the development of the expansion plans, which are presently being implemented. History. Located in the Northern Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, the New Union Gold Mine is part of what is known as the Klein Letaba gold fields. Gold prospecting in the Klein Letaba gold field area dates back to the earliest years of European prospecting activities in the Transvaal where, reportedly, gold was discovered as early as 1887 (figure 1). The claims com- prising the present New Union Gold Mine have been explored by a number of individuals and relatively small mining groups since the early 1930's. The work done by these entities was aimed at recovering as much gold as possible in the quickest and cheapest manner possible and, as a result, the area was not explored in a systematic fashion. The long-term potential of the area, therefore, was not known until very recently.

Newmont Mining Corporation owns and operates the Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The existing milling facility has operated since 2006. Following the startup of the milling operation, and coupled with the upswing in the copper market, Newmont realized that Phoenix needed a process option to treat lowgrade transition and oxide copper ores. This meant that potentially revenue generating ore was being mined as waste. With no system in place to treat the transition and oxide copper, work began to determine the most feasible approach. After evaluating multiple options, the flow sheet was set for a run-of-mine (ROM) heap leach pad and solvent extraction/electrowinning plant (L-SX/EW). This paper will discuss the synergies and challenges of developing a copper L-SX/EW plant at the Phoenix copper-gold mill.

"The conditions under which rocks become superficially damaged during the grinding process are not well understood. The main purpose of the work presented here is to understand how superficial breakage occurs under incremental low-energy impacts. To enable this study a series of abrasion tests with multi-size pilot mills have been performed. Outcomes of numerical simulation corresponding to each test were examined to investigate the experimental results. Abrasion tests have been conducted using three grinding mill sizes (i.e. 1.8, 1.2, and 0.8 m). Two types of ore were used to investigate different hardness strengths. To ensure abrasion was the dominant mechanism, in all tests the mill speed was reduced to 40% of critical speed. The relationship between the Fractional mass loss rate and particle size was investigated by randomly collecting seven tracer particles from sizes -73+63, -53+45, and -37.5+31.5 mm. It was evident from the results that the Fractional mass loss rate of angular particles declines as the particle size increases whereas the Fractional mass loss rate decreases from fine to coarse in rounded particles. Results of Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations indicate that fine particles experience higher levels of collision energy per particle and this value reduces as the particle size increases and mill size reduces. This explains the higher Fractional mass loss rate of smaller particles as well as the increase in the Fractional mass loss rate as the mill size increases. Linked DEM and experimental data indicates that under these test conditions surface damage attrition is the dominant mechanism. This work suggests that DEM simulation can be implemented to predict the abrasion wear of particles in mills."

Veolia Water Technologies was contracted by a global coal mining company to design a retrofit acid mine drainage treatment facility using DenseSludge™ technology on a former coal refuse disposal site. The project constraint was to reuse current facilities in order to reduce additional capital work cost and avoid additional footprint requirements while improving treatment performance and reducing sludge production and chemical consumption. The initial installation of 454 m3/h served as a pilot plant to demonstrate the benefits of the process and ultimately provided design criteria for the new facility. The pilot demonstrated the benefit of the technology by reducing sludge volume by 90 per cent compared to conventional processes currently in use. The sludge that is reinjected into the mine contains less water, which reduces the volume of water that returns to the mine pool for treatment and mine water balance. Furthermore, the pilot plant reduced lime usage compared to conventional processes by operating at a lower pH set point, demonstrating steady pH control and stoichiometric lime utilisation.CITATION:Dube, C and Banerjee, K, 2015. In India around 15-20% of Run of Mine (ROM) from any iron ore deposit reports to slime dams as byproduct of iron ore beneficiation process. The proportion of iron ore slime to ROM will increase in future with higher proportion of lean grade ores in ROM. Furthermore, tonnages of iron ore slime will also increase with increasing demand of iron concentrate. Presently, this slime is stored in the dam in the absence of beneficiation technology. A beneficiation flowsheet has been developed at Tata Steel. This process produced concentrate of 2.2% alumina with 40 % yield from slime of 7-9% alumina. The iron content in the reject will be less than 40% thus adhering to the regulatory norm. Pilot scale study show waste from slime beneficiation is a good raw material for making a variety of building materials. Waste from slime beneficiation also has soil amendment properties. Pilot scale studies show productivity of rice increased when the waste of slime beneficiation process is mixed with soil. On commercialization of this zero waste technology slime generated from the iron ore washing plant will be completely used. In this paper the result of the pilot scale studies on slime beneficiation and utilization processes towards soil making and making of building materials are discussed in detail.

Effective domaining is fundamental to geostatistical modelling for grade control. Through analysis of lithological, structural and alteration logging data, effective groupings (domains) can be identified and employed for estimation or simulation purposes.The poor definition of domains can adversely affect the grade control model resulting in a misinterpretation of the optimal ore-waste boundary and ultimately reduces the quality of recovered ore. The implementation of an appropriate domaining strategy is therefore expected to improve recovery and reconciliation.A thorough understanding of the geology of the deposit and adequate sample data is required for selecting domains. For new deposits, a resource drill database and resource model may be the only information available. Where extension to a previous operation is taking place, historic grade control, mapping and exposed geology may be used to improve domain selection. Preconceptions about domains, should they exist, need to be re-evaluated and tested to ensure they are fit for the purposes of grade control.While mining progresses, the domain model is re-evaluated to ensure that the previous interpretation is still suitable for the present configuration and geology. The grade control process, being iterative, lends itself to regular review and continuous improvement as further data is collected during the grade control cycle. Regular updates to the geology model, mapping, geostatistical data analysis and review of variography will provide indications of a changing domaining environment.Narrow vein gold deposits, which may have several factors influencing mineralisation, present considerable domaining challenges. "Iron ore is the source of primary iron for the world’s iron and steel industries. Its production can be reported as crude ore, usable ore or iron content of ore. Historically, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) used reported crude ore production from China in tabulations of world iron ore production while other countries have typically reported their production in terms of usable iron ore. When China’s crude ore production was tabulated with usable ore production from other countries, world iron ore production totals have been overestimated by 10 percent to a high of content and may include products such as concentrates, direct-shipping ore, pellets, and sinter.• Iron content, also referred to as metal content or grade, denotes the amount of elemental iron in the crude or usable ore.BackgroundIron ores consumed in the steel industry typically require an iron content greater than 58 percent before being considered commercially usable. Iron ores that are not commercially usable must undergo beneficiation to raise the iron content. Approximately 98 percent of the world’s usable iron ore production is consumed in blast furnaces to make pig iron, which is further processed to make steel.High-grade iron ore mines can supply usable iron ore, known as direct-shipping ore, to blast furnaces, with minimal physical processing and no beneficiation. With direct-shipping ore, the reported production for crude ore and usable ore are the same. Ore from low-grade deposits must undergo beneficiation to increase the iron content before it can be used by the steel industry. In this instance, the mined material is called crude ore and post-beneficiation concentrates are called usable ore; the amount produced will be less than the crude ore amount. With the notable exceptions of countries such as Australia and Brazil, most of the world’s iron ore deposits are low-grade and require beneficiation."

Through the early stages of metamorphism, when diffusion is the predominant mineral forming process. there is a tendency toward homogenization of rock units; but there is also zoning resulting from differing primary lithology and structure. Later stages of metamorphism, when infiltration occurs, tend to intensify zoning within the rock mass. The above concepts have been borne out in exploration of talc deposits and skarns. Initially, geologic mapping and soil sampling are directed to understanding mineralogy and petrology. Later, seismic methods are employed to further define lithology in the subsurface. Magnetometer surveys can also define some metamorphic units efficiently. Then, drilling must ensue to confirm lithology and determine extent of mineralization.

"Classic engineering economics provides the mining engineer with a fundamental approach to choosing between capital spending alternatives. This approach has been heavily used over the years and is an accepted technique for most investment decisions. There is a shortcoming that I have run into over the 15 year period when I worked in business planning roles. The classic time value of money approaches such as Net Present Value, Return on Investment, and Internal Rate of Return provide good estimates, but the input assumptions may fall short of describing the real material differences required by these analysis techniques. If the cost benefit analysis is defined solely on the improvement of the item being replaced or improved, the true profitability of the decision may be overestimated. Productivity improvement based capital projects can yield more accurate forecasts when conducted in concert with a “bottleneck analysis”. INTRODUCTION A review of the Theory of Constraints, (Goldratt, Cox, 1984) Lean, (Womack, 2003) (Rattner, 2006) and Six Sigma (Cryger, DeFeo 2015) lead us to recognize that these process improvement methodologies are oriented to the manufacturing process. These systems generally involve a factory that the material moves through on the way to becoming a final product. The mining challenge has many similarities to manufacturing once the ore has been won and made ready for processing. Before that point, however, the process is somewhat inverted while the ore is being won. Instead of the material moving through the factory, the factory is moving through the material. The Theory of Constraints (TOC) was used in an underground context by Baafi, Cai and Porter at 2015 APCOM, but even this groups’ analysis did not carry the concept from mining to shipping of the final product. There can be spatially distributed data that can affect the mining throughput constraints, some of which can be determined from exploration results. Identifying constraints can lead us to mapping productivity bottlenecks on future mining. Knowing this may improve decision making by eliminating one of Jim Fishbein’s three deadly sins of strategic planning: incomplete planning. When evaluating capital investment alternatives you should evaluate the impact of any proposed improvements on the entire operation. At the core of any mining system is the materials handling system. This can be typically expressed as the system that handles the raw material from the “face” through processing and then handling the finished product as well as the waste material. A “Bottleneck Analysis” is an investigation into the factors limiting a material handling system’s productivity (Goldratt, Cox, 1984). Mining material handling systems are usually composed of several linked components such as draglines, shovels, loaders, hydraulic excavators, continuous miners, longwalls, highwall miners, bucket wheel excavators, LHDs, feeders, conveyor belts, stockpiles, crushers, processing plants with various circuits, and waste handling systems. Each of the aforementioned components has a slightly different throughput capacity. When these are linked in series, the one with the lowest throughput capacity limits all of the others, creating the bottleneck for the system. Every material handling system has a bottleneck. In the mining environment, a subtle, but very significant phenomenon may also occur. The bottleneck may change as a result of a change in the raw feed qualities, face recession, overburden depth, digability, learning curve, and many others factors which may be derived from the drillhole data. These parameters often change as a function of the location in the reserve base, and may also vary with time."

This paper presents the implementation and evaluation of the hydraulic fracturing technique and Longwall Visual Analysis (LVA) software to mitigate the impact of a 1,000-ft (305-meter) widemassive sandstone channel on a 1,500-ft-wide (457-m-wide) longwall face. Based on a underground roof geology reconnaissance program, four frac holes were drilled and fraced along the center axis of the sandstone channel. To further provide detailed monitoring of the longwall face, the Longwall Visual Analysis (LVA) software was installed to track the face pressure and cavity formation index. In mid-December 2011, the longwall face approached and entered into the western edge of the sandstone channel. The longwall face mined through the center axis of the sandstone channel in mid-January 2012 and advanced outby the eastern edge of the sandstone channel in early February 2012. Results from daily underground observations and production delay analysis confirmed the effectiveness of the hydraulic fracturing program and the validity of the LVA Software.

Failures within hard rock underground excavations have historically been defined by a depth of failure, estimated in the field or through individual measurements, with a simplified failure geometry; such as 1/3 span, cubic or paraboloid. This simplified shape, volume and mass of failure is typically used to estimate in situ demand as a simplified discrete point. However, the highly variable failure geometry indicates simplified methods to estimate the mass can be erroneous in comparison to high precision LiDAR scans. Advances in technology have enabled the accurate capture of failure geometry and allow a far more accurate analysis of failures to be completed. This case study investigates a number of real-life failures to accurately define the failure geometry, the distribution of the failure parameters and compares this to traditional methodologies. This paper also outlines a suggested means of standardising failure geometry parameters whilst accounting for their variability.

Treatment of tailings is an integral component of mineral processing. Tailings with a high clay content are a challenge for the mineral processing industry; e.g. the clay slimes produced from production of phosphate in the mid-western United States and the fine tailings produced from oil sands production in western Canada. Dispersants are a commonly used process aid, but their impact on the structure and settling properties of high clay content tailings is not well understood. The paper describes the changes in composition and bitumen release that occur when mature fine tailings (MFT) are treated with a polymeric dispersant (lignosulfonate.) Synchrotron-source computed tomography (CT) was used to obtain high-resolution 3D images of samples prepared at varying dosages of dispersant. The CT method permits a powerful visualisation of the internal structure and composition of the samples. These insights will enhance our understanding of the structural characteristics of mineral tailings relevant to solid-liquid separation by flocculation and thickening. The Hachinohe Smelter employs the Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF) for production of zinc and lead and handles a large number of concentrates and recycled materials. In recent years, recycled materials such as zinc-bearing materials, lead sludge and Waelz oxide have provided up to 30% of the feed materials at the plant. To allow for a satisfactory operation using such a wide range of recycled materials, the Hot Briquetting Plant was built in 1986 and started its operation in January 1987. In April 1988 the zinc production capacity of the ISP was increased from 81,000 to 101,000 tonnes per year. The additional production in the ISP has been attributed to the utilization of the hot briquetting process. This paper describes the various facts of the smelter, concentrating on hot briquetting operations and treatment of hot briquettes in the ISF.

La seule production de columbo-tantalite réalisée en Côte d?Ivoire est effectuée dans les éluvions et alluvions du gisement d?Issia, localisé au Centre- Ouest de la Côte d?Ivoire. Même si un lien direct avec les roches granitiques est suspecté, aucune attention particulière n?a été accordée à l?étude de la minéralisation primaire en relation avec l?évolution des granites et des pegmatites associées. Ces granites, qui sont en intrusion dans les roches sédimentaires du Protérozoïque inférieur, comprennent : le granite orienté à deux micas (Lobo), le granite orienté à muscovite dominante (Bitapia) et le granite porphyroïde non orienté à muscovite dominante (Issia). Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les pegmatites à Nb-Ta-Be-Li sont liées au granite de type Issia. Les observations de terrain et les analyses sur roche totale des granites montrent que: (1) les trois principaux granites de la région sont de type- S et peralumineux dans leur composition, (2) ils ont été formés pendant la période tardi- à post-Éburnéenne, (3) le granite d?Issia fut le dernier à se mettre en place. Les pegmatites liées au granite d?Issia ont été classées en quatre types : Apegmatites stériles; B- pegmatites à Be; C- pegmatites zonées à Nb-Ta-Be; et Dpegmatites zonées à Be-Nb-Ta-Li. Les pegmatites zonées comprennent les zones suivantes: I- zone à aplite; II- zone graphique; III- zone à albite, microcline, béryl et columbo-tantalite; IV - zone à microcline massive; V- zone à quartz. Ces pegmatites présentent une zone d?altération métasomatique externe. La minéralisation de Ta, Nb et Be est liées à la zone III des pegmatites de types C et D, et celle de Li est associée aux greisens qui peuvent être observés n?importe où dans les pegmatites de type D. Les données de terrain et de laboratoire indiquent que le granite d?Issia est la roche parentale des pegmatites à éléments rares de la région. Les pegmatites minéralisées sont distribuées seulement autour du granite d?Issia et les patrons des terres rares des granites et ceux des pegmatites à éléments rares sont très similaires. Les analyses de la composition totale montrent un lien génétique entre le granite d?Issia et les pegmatites à éléments rares. Il est suggéré que les pegmatites ont été formées durant le transport et la cristallisation fractionnée du magma.

IN a paper read before the Institute of Metals, Rosenhain 1 described a new type of furnace designed primarily for the thermal analysis of metals by the inverse-rate method and used by him in the metallurgical department of the National Physical Laboratory with considerable success. In his discussion of this furnace, Rosenhain pointed out some difficulties met with in its operation, such as uniformity of rate of heating or cooling being inadequate for the degree of accuracy aimed at. To overcome this difficulty, he suggested, in place of motor propulsion, a gravity drive controlled by a"hydraulic cylinder with a relief valve whose width of opening can he regulated to allow of any desired rate of motion." The authors, in constructing a thermal-analysis furnace of Rosenhain's type, have therefore followed this suggestion and also added certain features that increase somewhat the convenience and simplicity of its operation. Requests for information regarding this furnace and the highly satisfactory results obtained from its use, it is believed, justify describing its construction and operation in sufficient detail to make possible its duplication or improvement. Description of Furnace.-The details of the furnace construction are shown in Fig. 1, which is drawn to scale. The heating tube is of /4 in. (6.35 mm.) wall "alundum" heated at the upper end by seventeen turns of 0.52 mm. platinum wire, which is coated with "alundum" cement supplied for this purpose. The cement coating is essential when a high temperature (over 1000° C.) is required, as it prevents hot spots with the resulting burning out of the heater. This platinum-wire winding, unlike "nichrome," is entirely satisfactory for temperatures of at least 1000° C. It has been maintained at that temperature continuously for 2 months and shows no signs of deterioration. This temperature is maintained by a current of 5 amp. drawn from 30 volts potential, so its necessarily continuous operation is quite economical.
