IN the United States, in the 2 1/2 years since the rescinding of the wartime order closing gold mines, conditions have not yet returned to normal. Shortages of man power have prevented some mines from operating at all, and most of those in operation are still at reduced capacity. This fact, combined with shortages of materials, the high cost of supplies and labor, high tax rates, and a fixed price for the product have made the past years rather rough ones for gold producers. In foreign countries conditions are rather similar. In Canada several new mines are coming into production and some others are enlarging. Costs have not increased as much as in the United States and gold production is being encouraged. Recently a bonus of 20 per cent on increased production has been proposed. In South Africa, where gold mining is of major importance in the national economy the industry is also in a favored position with government; new discoveries of major importance there will markedly increase the gold output. During 1990-1999, a total of 458 fires occurred in all coal mining categories; 157 of those fires caused 164 injuries and 2 fatalities. The greatest number of fues and fire injuries occurred at surface mines, whch also had the highest risk rate values. A total of 66 fuefighting interventions were required. Of these, there were 25 mine rescue team interventions in underground mines, including 5 mobile equipment firefighting interventions, and 41 fire brigade and fire department interventions at all surface operations, including 19 mobile equipment interventions. In all, 50 fires destroyed or heavily damaged equipment (including 16 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of other firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. A total of 1 14 fires were detected late by smoke, and 42 fires were not detected.

Coal is the most abundant and most economical source of energy in the United States, however, combustion of coal results in release of pollutants to the environment. The release of sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen during combustion of coal contributes to the deterioration of the environment. Energy independence in the United States must include the increased use of coal reserves. Increased reliance on coal for energy will dictate the necessity for making coal a cleaner fuel. New technologies employing a variety of techniques from harsh chemical treatment to mild physical separations to clean coal are rapidly becoming available. Success for any coal cleaning process is in economics which translate into efficient removal of sulfur with high recovery of combustibles as well as low capital and operating costs for the process. Conventional coal cleaning processes remove water soluble sulfates and a portion of the pyritic sulfur and ash from coals. Removal of additional sulfur from coals requires more advanced coal cleaning techniques. Coal contains many organic sulfur forms which are the most difficult of the sulfur types to remove from coal. The heteroaromatic sulfur species, such as the comlex thiophenes, are the most commonly found organic sulfur forms. These sulfur forms are resistant to chemical attack and are considered to be refractory compounds. Atlantic Research Corporation has developed an "unique" microorganism, CB1 (Coal Bug 1), capable of oxidizing thiophenic sulfur in coal to form water soluble sulfates.

RESEARCH in the steel industry, as in other lines of manufacturing, has for its principal purpose the increasing of profits. That is what manufacturing companies are for, and all departments of the organization must be so coordinated as to lead to profitable operation. To divide a payroll into productive and non-productive labor is misleading. Productive labor, in fact, is necessary labor, and non- productive labor is the labor we can get along without. One might as well say that the steering wheel is not a part of an automobile as to say that the directing minds of an industry are non-productive. Legitimate manufacturing profits in a steel company or any other company are the reward that the public pays for service rendered or risk taken. The desire for profits is the impelling motive that leads investors .to take risks and build up industries that give employment to others. Every department of a company, be it executive, manufacturing, financial, sales, or research, must contribute to the one end which brings success-profits.

"Recent developments in image analysis techniques and the power of computer hardware have spurred international interest in the potential uses of image analysis techniques in a range of industrial applications. One of these applications is the control of the complex flotation process. Despite years of work, the flotation process is still poorly understood. Current attempts to control flotation cells focus on consistently duplicating the control achieved by human operators.In human control of flotation two of the dominant visual cues are the froth flow speed and the froth stability. These two factors can be measured and inferred respectively from image analysis of video of the froth surface. Two important hydrodynamic variables for control of the flotation process are the air addition rate and the level of the froth pulp interface.The current work focuses on the relationship between froth flow speed and the rate of recovery of concentrate from a flotation cell. Results are presented that show a strong relationship between flow speed and concentrate yield. These results include tests where the conditions in the cell were not changed, as well as tests involving changes to the cell level and air addition rate. Preliminary results are presented which show a correlation between froth stability and froth percent solids.Future developments of the system will include comprehensive froth texture typing, colour space and stability analyses."

A national survey, 1978-1980, found 180,973 waste impoundments used by industrial mining, municipal and other interests. Possibly 27,000 contain hazardous materials. The potential hazard of leaks polluting water supplies is a growing concern. An electrical technique was developed to efficiently and speedily detect and locate leaks in geomembrane-lined liquid impoundments without emptying the contents. A potential applied between the liquid and earth causes electric current to flow through leaks in the insulating geomembrane material to ground. The cur- rent density around the leak is used to detect and locate the leak. Field tests show single and multiple leaks 2.54 cm in diameter or less can be detected and located to within less than 30 cm.

El presente texto describe los principales métodos usados en las etapas de prospección por petróleo para así establecer la inversión en la búsqueda de petróleo. La exploración de petróleo es una de las más riesgosas dado que los estudios geológicos previos a la zona, no siempre se corresponden las espectativas de la inversión. Pese a estos inconvenientes, el petróleo se sigue consolidando como la principal fuente de energía del país, tanto por su Es bajo costo, poder calorífico y las ventajas para el transporte y manipuleo. De forma que la provisión de productos de petróleo, como su abastecimiento nunca ha representado un problema en el país, sobrepasando los 15 000, 000 barriles de petróleo hacia 1958. De otro lado, el circuito de prospección de petróleo comprende la roca reservorio, la roca madre y la roca sello, cuya acumulación de capas genera irregularidades y forma las trampas petrolíferas. Reunida estas condiciones para la acumulación de petróleo, hay posibilidades de que la zona a explorar contenga algún yacimiento petrolífero. Sin embargo, existen casos donde se hay una superposición de estratos a manera de reservorio que ocultan la posibilidad de un yacimiento, como es el caso del desierto de Sechura o la montaña del Perú. En estos casos, se emplea los métodos geofísicos de prospección que verifican el indicio de las condiciones estructurales del subsuelo. Entre los distintos métodos utilizados, tenemos a los gravimétricos, basados en la medición de variaciones de la atracción de la gravedad sobre la superficie de la tierra; los métodos magnéticos, que miden las variaciones del campo magnético terrestre, generados por las propiedades magnéticas anómalas del subsuelo; los métodos sísmicos que son los más usados dado que informan de forma precisa sobre la condición geológica del subsuelo, y los métodos eléctricos, que son los menos usados puesto que otorgan datos superficiales sobre las condiciones geológicas del subsuelo. Finalmente, para el costo de exploración del petróleo se tiene que equilibrar los siguientes factores: los métodos de prospección, costo de materiales y equipo, sueldos del personal, número de puntos de observación, facilidades de transporte y las clases de terreno y clima.

Brazing is a low-cost process used extensively in the manufacturing and repair of aircraft gas turbine engines. Components within the compressor stage of the engine experience relatively low temperatures (600-700°C), therefore joints of stainless steels are typically employed. In such joints, a Pd-Ni-Cr-Si-B (PalNiCroTM) brazing alloy is used as a sealant, however brazing procedures are not well understood. The wetting behavior of PalNiCroTM on AISI 347 was evaluated with respect to contact angle. A microstructural evaluation was carried out with variable joint clearances. Microhardness profiles were performed to investigate the presence of hard secondary phases, which were later confirmed by electron microscopy. The results indicated an equilibrium contact angle of 10° within 100 seconds. The average microhardness of the braze layer and base metal were approximately 550 and 205 VHN, respectively. At the interface, a diffusion zone was present containing carbides and borides.

Many maintenance managers find it difficult to justify investments in maintenance improvement initiatives. In part, this is due to a tendency by mine managers to regard maintenance purely as a cost centre, and not as a process able to influence productive capacity and profit. It is also hindered by a lack of alignment between commonly used maintenance performance measures and key business drivers, and the lack of formal business training amongst maintenance professionals. With this in mind, a model to assist maintenance managers in evaluating the benefits of maintenance improvement projects was recently formulated. The model considers four cost saving dimensions. These are: 1. reduction in the cost of unplanned repairs and maintenance,2. increased or accelerated production and/or sales,3. spares inventory reduction, and4. reduction in over-investment in physical assets and operating costs. This paper discusses the application of this model and a number of numerical examples are given to justify investments in maintenance improvement projects having varying objectives.

Hydraulic cylinders a re used in several roof support systems, such as longwall shields and mobile roof supports, to provide critical ground control Many state-of-the-art hydraulic support systems operate at pressures as high as 7,000 psi to provide the necessary support capacities. Pressure in the upper stages of multi-stage cylinders can be intensified by a factor of 2 or 3 providing pressures of 20,000 psi or greater. A proper understanding of the operation of these high pressure systems is necessary to safely maintain and repair these support systems. Likewise, the performance characteristics need to be fully understood to evaluate the impact of design parameters on the capability of the support to maintain effective ground control. This paper examines the basic operating principles of state-of-the-art hydraulic cylinders and discusses relative issues pertaining to. (1) setting loads, (2) support stiffness, (3) yielding behavior, (4) errors in assessing support loading, and (S) hydraulic failure mechanisms and how to detect them

An important part of underground mine planning and operations involves the reclamation of working areas after blasting before the mining cycle can continue. This is especially true for mining that must use large blasting operations in the vicinity of extensive underground workings. In an effort to develop a rational procedure for estimating mine damage produced by blasting, underground rock fall has been assessed for a large-scale blasting operation in oil shale. The amount of mine damage has been quantified in terms of manshifts of effort required to reclaim underground working areas after blasting. This has been further broken down into the three main phases of reclamation, i.e., scaling and excavation, rockbolting, and miscellaneous repairs on ventilation, utilities, etc. Different types of openings have also been assessed including level tunnels, incline drifts and rooms. The effect of repeated blasting on mine damage has also been documented with initial blasts producing more damage than subsequent blasts.

An approximate phase diagram has been developed for the CaF2-CaC2 system, indicating a eutectic point at 1240°C, Ncac2 = 0.13, and no detectable solid solution in either phase. The liquidus line is shown to correspond to a simple c22- ion in solution. A thermo-chemical study of&apos; the reaction between carbon-saturated Ni-Ca alloys and CaC2-CaF2 liquids indicates that lhe Raoullian activity coefficient of CaC2 in dilute solution in Cap2 al 1500°C lies between 8 and 10. Some effects of the stabilily of Cap2-CaC2 solutions at high temperatures on electroslag remelting praclice are outlined. THE alkaline earth acetylides. MIIC2, have a reasonably high thermochemical stability at high temperature in the solid state,&apos; with the exception of magnesium, which forms an unstable acetylide at low temperatures (-500°C) and a carbide, Mg2C3, in the range 700&apos; to 1000°C. The acetylides of calcium and barium have been shown to have limited solubility in their respective chlorides,&apos; and further these solutions contain the acetylide as a C: ion.&apos; The equivalent magnesium solutions have not been studied. Although calcium "carbide" is used as a desulfuriz-ing reagent in steelmaking. and is possibly present as an acetylide-oxide phase in very basic electric arc practice slags, the acetylide ion appears to be substantially unstable in a silicate slag.* As a conse- *This instability arises from equilibria in the reaction: CaC2 + CO = (Ca0) + 3C where the low intrinsic solubility of CaC2 in silicate lattice, and the low activity of CaO in a silicate solution where CaO/Si02 < 1, combine to give a very small equilibrium concentration of CaC2 in solution in such silicate slags at temperatures in the region of I 500°c, even under carbon-saturated conditions. Under highly basic conditions, a liquid CaO-CaC2 phase may separate from the silicate system quence of this, the possibility that reactions involving CaC2 in silicate solutions are of importance to general steelmaking practice is remote. However, in operations involving a slag primarily based on a halide, or alkaline earth oxide, we must take into account the possibility that CaC2 will appear in quantities sufficient to significantly affect both the chemical and physical properties of the slag. The work outlined below presents a study of the CaF2-CaC2 system intended to provide sufficient data to allow an estimate of the importance of this system to electroslag remelting and welding practice. However, we should indicate at this point that there will be other processes, e.g., heat treatment, flux cleaning of castings, fused salt electrolysis, and so forth, where alkaline-earth halide fluxes are in contact with carbon, graphite, or carbides, and where halide-acetylide solutions must be taken into account. EXPERIMENTAL 1) Structural Studies. In view of the difficulty ex-perienced in handling CaC2 prepared from calcium turnings and propane gas at 700°C, it was decided to use solutions prepared directly in the equilibration apparatus, Fig. 1. The starting materials were: a) Ni-Ca-C alloy, prepared by adding calcium to liquid nickel held under calcium fluoride in an induction-heated graphite crucible; b) calcium fluoride, prepared by fusing calcium fluoride powder (British Drug House "EXTRA PURE") calcium fluoride in an induction-heated graphite crucible, in air, followed by electrolysis between graphite electrodes at 1 amp cm-2 density, for 10&apos; coulombs per g CaF2. This procedure decomposes the CaO produced by hydrolysis during the fusion step, replacing it by CaC2; Ca2+ + 2e-Ca*(l) Ca*(l) + 2C(gr)-(CaC2)caF2 O2- -2e-O*(g) O*(g) +C(gr)-CO(g) This results in a composition of between 2 and 5 wt pct CaC2 in CaF2. Fifty grams (in lumps) of this material were placed in a graphite crucible, together with Ni-Ca-C alloy (averaging 20 wt pct Ca), and the equilibration apparatus assembled. The alloy reacted with the crucible at high temperature to give CaC2, which dissolved in the calcium fluoride solution to give the desired composition. Cooling curves were plotted manually for these liquids, with rapid stirring and CaF2 seeding to minimize supercooling, and using a Pt/Pt 13 Rh thermocouple calibrated on the freezing points of nickel and copper. This gave a reproducibility of ±0.l°C. and an absolute accuracy of the thermocouple of ±l°C. An example curve is shown in Fig. 2, with the CaF2 end of the binary system in Fig. 3. The CaF2-CaC2 ingots were crushed, under dry nitrogen, and sampled for chemical analysis and X-ray examination. Analytical details are given in the Appendix. Powder diffraction data indicated that the only phases present in all samples examined were calcium fluoride and tetragonal (Types I and 111) calcium acetylide,4 with no evidence of solid solutions or compound formation. 2) Thermochemical Studies. The apparatus used to obtain activity data on CaC2 in these systems is shown in Fig. 4. It consists of an arrangement whereby the graphite crucible and its contents (CaF2-CaC2. Commonly accepted maintenance methods are being outdated by the rapid acceptance and use of more complicated hydraulic circuitry on modern mining equipment. It is no longer adequate to use the maintenance program to merely repair or sustain equipment operation. Ever increasing operating costs place a huge premium on lost production time. It has, therefore, placed the maintenance programs in the position of being required to alleviate equipment malfunctions on production shifts and still attain the maximum unit life from each component part. Ireland mine of Hanna Coal Co., which operates two production shifts and one maintenance shift per day, performs hydraulic maintenance with a plan that is geared to assure the bulk of work being handled on the midnight or maintenance shift. Production is thus allowed to continue without interruption from major hydraulic component malfunction. The plan is called selective maintenance because the specific part to be worked on and the time the work is to be accomplished are selected according to a definite plan.

"Multistage model designed and used for more detailed description of floatation process. The study develops a new model of flotation kinetics description. It defines flotation as process that consists of several stages: air bubbles and particles are separate, air bubbles and particles form a raising aggregate, aggregate raises to froth layer. This description significantly differs from commonly used model, which is much simplified. The multistage model gives an in-depth description and considers different aspects of flotation. Experimental approval of the new model resulted in its accuracy.The model is to be used for description of all flotation processes’ kinetics of wastewater treatment. It helps in accurate designing of flotation treatment plants and may be used for further research of flotation process. Columnar flotation installation was designed by using multistage model. This installation consists of new tubular aerators with special ejectors, froth pressing system as well as unit of thin-layering lighting to catch microflotocomplex “particle – bubble”. Usage of tubular aerators allowed to aerate the overall volume of pulp. Due to use of special ejectors with longer mixing camera we state higher volume of small-sized floto-active bubbles. Use of multistage model allowed to optimize and get higher technological results of potash salts enrichment. Tests were conducted on centrifuges-floatation installation system. Meanwhile, froth concentrate contained mainly thin hydrophobic particles sized circa 0,1 mm. As a result we set that during floatation cleaning process of froth concentrate 95-98% of chloride potassium (KCI) is derived from foam.The final product satisfies production quality. Columnar floatation installation productivity was 17 – 21 m3/m2h, which is a high technological result. Columnar floatation installation is one of the best examples of concentrating equipment using nearly all technological indices."

Los objetivos principales son: contribuir a mejorar la calidad y la equidad en la provisión de los servicios de educación y salud en Cajamarca, movilizar talentos y recursos empresariales y públicos, así como contribuir a eliminar las brechas en educación rural de nuestros niños.

L&apos;affinage des grains dans les alliages d&apos;aluminium consiste à augmenter le nombre de sites de cristallisation de la phase a-Al afin d&apos;obtenir une structure fine. Les alliages mères de type Al-Ti-B sont largement utilisés comme raffineurs des grains. Cette étude a pour but d&apos;établir des mécanismes convenables d&apos;affinage des grains dans l&apos;alliage A356 en utilisant cinq alliages mères et deux températures de coulée (750°C et 950°C). Les résultats montrent que la phase a-Al prend une forme selon l&apos;alliage mère ajoute; les échantillons coules a haute température montrent une taille de grain plus grosse; les températures de germination et de croissance augmentent avec I&apos; augmentation du Ti ou du B et la taille des grains diminue. L&apos;alliage mère Al-4%B montre une puissance remarquable en comparaison d&apos;autres alliages mères. Pour cet alliage mère, le titane résiduel dans l&apos;alliage A356 réagit avec le bore pour former TiB2 qui, par la suite, agit comme un germe actif pour la phase a-Al.

A method for preparing ferrochromium alloys containing less than 2 pct carbon has been devised in a single vacuum furnace reactor. This method can conserve chromium and should reduce the capital and energy requirements relative to chromite electrothermal reduction. Reduced products containing less than 2 and as low as 0.01 wt pct carbon were obtained by reacting pellets of chromite and carbonaceous reductant mixtures at pressures of 0.1 to 1 ton and temperatures of 1,230° to 1,320° C. The extent of reduction increased with increased temperature and decreased pressure; however, operating conditions were limited due to the onset of significant chromium vaporization at higher temperatures and lower pressures. Foundry coke, anthracite, and carbon black were found to be superior to graphite as reductants. The reduction of chromite to metallics was found to proceed via the carbide intermediates Fe3C or Cr3C2. Lime accelerates the. rate of solid state reduction of chromite and can shorten the furnacin1r time at 1,3000 C under vacuum from 13 hours to less than three hours. Additional lime and silica are added to the hot reduced chromite after releasing the vacuum and raising the furnace. temperature to 1, 700° C. Soaking the charge for about 20 minutes gave a button of low carbon ferrochromium alloy beneath a well-defined slag layer.
