Smelting oxidizes Cu-Fe-S concentrate to matte. Converting oxidizes this matte to metallic copper. Smelting and converting are, therefore, part of the same oxidation process. It would seem natural, then, that smelting and converting should be combined to produce metallic copper in one step. This would: (a) maximize S02 capture by restricting S02 emission to a single, continuous source (b) minimize industrial oxygen and fuel requirements (c) minimize cost. This chapter discusses one step, direct-to-copper flash smelting as it is practiced in 2000. It then uses. the matrices of this book to determine: (a) the industrial oxygen and oil requirements of direct-to copper flash smelting (b) the distribution of Cu between metal and slag during direct-to-copper flash smelting. It concludes that direct-to-copper flash smelting: (a) captures?S02 efficiently from its single continuous stream of SO2 off gas (b) minimizes oxygen/oil consumption but: (c) sends -114 of its Cu-in-feed to slag.

The glass tube of spent fluorescent lamps is contaminated with mercury, which might be a serious hazard in the case of conventional recycling by melting with other glasses. A possible solution could be its incorporation into a clay body to fabricate common fired ceramics such as bricks and tiles. The objective of this work is to characterize a type of fluorescent lamp glass waste to be incorporated into a clayey ceramic. The characterization was performed in terms of wettability tests to evaluate the interaction between the surface of the clayey ceramic and glass waste as a function of the firing temperature. The results showed that the contact angle decreased with increasing temperature, reaching a value of 79°, at a temperature of 1100°C, but not sufficient to completely wet the ceramic. However, compatible chemical composition and reduction of porosity by the flow of soft glass waste between the clay particles favor the consolidation of the ceramics structure above 900°C.

THE close-packed-hexagonal structure of mag-J- nesium is converted to a ductile and malleable body-centered-cubic lattice by the addition of lithium in excess of 10 pct. Further, the density of magnesium or magnesium-base alloys is decreased by additions of lithium. The practical possibilities of such alloys as a basis for uniquely light, malleable, and ductile structural materials were pointed out by Dean in 1944' and by Hume-Rothery in 1945.2 It was apparent to these investigators, however, that more complex compositions would be required if strengths sufficient for structural applications were to be developed in these alloys. In a search for strengthening additions, various investigators w have examined a number of the ternary and more complex alloys containing magnesium and lithium. An investigation of the fundamental characteristics of these alloys was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. The investigation was initiated with a study of the magnesium-rich corner of the equilibrium diagram for the ternary system, Mg-Li-Al. The following data from published investigations of Mg-Li-A1 alloys were available: 1—a description of isothermal sections at 20" and 400°C through the Mg-Li-A1 constitution diagram by F. I. Shamrai;' 2—a diagram by P. D. Frost et al." showing approximate phase relationships at 700°F for a number of the Mg-Li-A1 alloys; and 3—diagrams showing the constitution at 500" and 700°F for the Mg-Li-A1 alloy system published by A. Jones et al.' Where compositions and temperatures permit comparison, these diagrams show disagreement. The 700°F isotherms of Frost and Jones differ only in the placement of the phase boundaries. But Sham-rai's 400°C (752°F) isotherm shows a variation in phases as well as in phase boundaries. Although rigid comparison of these different isothermal sections might not be justifiable, it seems impossible to reconcile Shamrai's construction with the isotherms of Frost or Jones. The isothermal sections presented in this paper were prepared to determine compositions which might be suitable for age hardening and to develop the general slope and placement of the various phase boundaries in the magnesium-rich corner of the diagram. Sections at 375", 200°, and 100°C were selected for investigation. In constructing these sections, the solubility of aluminum in magnesium, as reported by W. L. Fink and L. A. Willey Vn 1948, was used at the binary Mg-A1 boundary and the solubility of lithium in magnesium was obtained from the equilibrium diagram for that system as reported by G. F. Sager and B. J. Nelson" in the same year. The solubility of magnesium in lithium was determined experimentally and conforms in general to data reported by P. Saldau and F. Shamrai." Parameters for AlLi and MgI7A1, were taken from American Society for Testing Materials X-ray diffraction data cards. Experimental Procedures Although the isothermal sections presented in this paper are not unusually complex, the experimental techniques involved in their construction are made extremely difficult by the relatively high vapor pressure of lithium and the great chemical activity of both magnesium and lithium. Because of these characteristics, which make precise control of the composition of equilibrium-treated filings practically impossible, the disappearing phase method was used in preference to the parametric method in conjunction with metallographic studies. The alloys used in this investigation were melted and cast in an atmosphere of helium using a tilting-type furnace which enclosed a steel crucible and mold in a single unit. Each portion of the charge (500 to 600 g) was cleaned carefully just before placing it in the crucible; and the charge, crucible, and entire melting apparatus were evacuated and then washed with grade A helium while preheating to approximately 100°C. The alloys were melted and chill cast in an atmosphere of helium. Alloys prepared in this way were relatively free from inclusions and a fluxing treatment was considered unnecessary. The cylindrical ingots obtained were scalped and then reduced 96 pct in area by direct extrusion, yielding % in. diam rod. Sections of the rod, approximately 3 in. long, were given equilibrium heat treatments and then sampled for metallographic examination, X-ray diffraction study, and chemical analysis. The surface of each equilibrium-treated rod was machined to a depth sufficient to insure removal of contaminated material before samples for chemical analysis or X-ray diffraction study were obtained, and all decisions on microstructure were based on the examination of the central portion of the metallographic specimen. All specimens homogenized at 375°C were analyzed after this equilibrium heat treatment. When the composition of an alloy placed it in a critical area of the 200" or 100°C isothermal section, a check chemical analysis was made on a sample taken from the alloy specimen as-heat-treated at the particular temperature. This paper describing the mining practice at the Harmony mine, Baker, daho, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts in the United States. About 150 tons of copper ore containing 4 per cent copper, 0.001 ounce gold, and 0.1 ounce silver, is being produced daily from the Harmony mine by the shrinkage method of mining. The ore is taken by an aerial tramway 1/3 mile long to the mill, where it is concentrated. The concentrate is shipped 8 miles by truck to the railroad and thence by rail to Utah for smelting.

A 5;6 MVA pyrometallurgical demonstration-scale pilot plant was commissioned at Mintek, South Africa, in 1994, using lead blast-furnace slag and coke as raw materials. The plant included a.d.c. power. supply, two plasma-arc furnaces' and an ISP lead-splash condenser. Slags containing typically 12 per cent zinc oxide and 3 per cent lead oxide are produced as a waste during the smelting of lead in a blast furnace. These slags are a potential: resource for the recovery of lead and zinc. During 1994, about 600 t of lead blast-furnace, slag was proceced through the pilot plant using the Enviroplas process. Zinc and lead oxides were reduced to their respective metals, volatilized, and collected in an. ISP lead splash condenser. Prime Western grade zinc and slags disposable in accordance with current US legislation, were produced. Zinc condensation efficiencies of about 80 per cent were achieved.

HiTec Energy Ltd has been conducting research since 1996 into novel process routes for the treatment of low-grade and waste manganese sources for the production of high value and high quality electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) for the alkaline battery market. HiTecÆs approach is to treat previously unsaleable manganese deposits and mine site tailings using a novel sulfur dioxide leach route, followed by purification and electrowinning to generate the sought-after EMD product by an environmentally superior processing route to those presently practiced throughout the world today.HiTec Energy Ltd expects to be in commercial production with its Stage 1 facility in Kalgoorlie in the last quarter of 2004 for the production of 12 500 tpa EMD. With this production facility being adjacent to a laterite nickel producer with available waste manganese units, the opportunity arose for HiTec to combine its existing technologies with processes (that will be discussed in this paper) to turn two waste by-products into products that are used for high-tech purposes.HiTec Energy Ltd and the Parker Centre have had a collaborative research relationship for a number of years in areas involving EMD and battery related technologies. Meanwhile the solvent extraction (SX) group of the Parker Centre (CSIRO Minerals) has developed SX processes to separate manganese from nickel and cobalt. A project was initiated by HiTec Energy to recover manganese from waste laterite leach solutions using SX technology. Batch tests were conducted to select a suitable organic system for the extraction of manganese in terms of selectivity and extraction and stripping kinetics.A total of eight organic systems were tested by determining pH isotherms of metals using a laterite nickel process waste stream. Two organic systems, the Versatic 10 and Versatic 10/synergist systems, were chosen for further test work with Shellsol D70 chosen as the diluent for both systems.The Versatic 10/synergist system would be advantageous over the pure Versatic 10 system because fewer SX stages are required, resulting in a smaller organic inventory and lower capital costs. The risk of gypsum formation is also significantly lower with the synergistic system.

"This paper proposed a new method of Mg and Cl2 circulating for titanium sponge production by direct pyrolysis and thermal reduction process. Effects of pyrolysis temperature, pyrolysis time and partial pressure of oxygen on pyrolysis efficiency were researched, and the crystallite structural transformation of MgO productions at different pyrolysis temperature and time were analyzed by XRD. The experimental results indicates that the pyrolysis temperature and time effects the pyrolysis efficiency obviously, and the reasonable pyrolysis conditions by using MgCl2 in molten state are as follows: the pyrolysis temperature is 1100?, pyrolysis time is 60min and the partial pressure of oxygen is 100%, the pyrolysis efficiency get above 95% at this conditions. The dynamic analysis of molten magnesium chloride pyrolysis reaction shows that, as a chemical reaction process control, the response of the apparent activation energy Ea=70.4 kJ/mol.IntroductionTitanium is a young metal, it is applied in industrial until the Second World War. It is 160 years from the discovery of titanium to the industrial production of ductility titanium by magnesium reduction method in the United States in 1948. As a new kind of metal, titanium and titanium material are better than the traditional metal materials in mechanical properties, heat resistance and thermal conductivity. Titanium is a kind of landmark structure and function material, which is called “space metal”, “Marine metal”, “Intelligent metal” [1-3]. Although the study of new methods of titanium melting get more at present, Kroll method and Hunter method are really applied to industrial production methods for titanium smelting, and Hunter method is already discontinued because of costs at present. The core technology in Kroll method of sponge titanium production process can be ome down to two circulation, namely the cycle of magnesium and chlorine in preparation-process of titanium sponge. In the traditional Kroll method, the cycle is realized through magnesium chloride which is produced by the electrolytic magnesium reduction process in hot molten state. But because investment of equipment for electrolysis method is too high, this method has not been used by most titanium sponge production enterprise in China. At present most titanium sponge production enterprise in China produce titanium sponge by the outsourcing of titanium tetrachloride, but the main disadvantage of this method is that the by-product of magnesium chloride is difficult to deal with."

Although the foundation of a unified treatment of fluid flow in variably saturated porous media was established more than seventy years ago, no serious attempt was made to develop it until the early 1970's. Ever since, a number of unsaturated-saturated numerical models have been reported in the literature. However, none of these models have treated multidimensional, multiphase flow in deforming media, parts of which may undergo extensive secondary fracturing. A situation such as this is not uncommon in coal mining operations in which the longwall method of extraction is employed. The present model has been structured to handle such physical systems. This paper presents the mathematical formulation, the numerical algorithm, and a further validation and evaluation of the modified model. The model treats a multiphase flow in a three- dimensional regime and handles mining excavations of complex and changing configurations.

Many longwall mines rely on methane drainage to supplement traditional fan-based ventilation systems. However, the surface production facilities for methane drainage systems, including gob gas ventholes, are commonly located in remote locations, sometimes without convenient access to electrical power, and they may be monitored infrequently. The first evidence that a methane drainage system may not be operating efficiently, or not operating at all, can be an increase in methane concentrations at a return air shaft or underground where the workforce is exposed to the risk of a methane explosion. A solar powered, remote gob gas venthole monitoring and cellular telephone-based real-time data transmission system has been developed and successfully field tested by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to address this problem. With this system, individual methane drainage boreholes can be monitored from the mine office to determine current operational performance parameters, as well as review past data to anticipate maintenance needs and troubleshoot operational problems.

The International Ground Control Conference in Mining has always provided an open forum for the publication, presentation, discussion, and often heated debate on roof bolting systems mostly with attention to how, when, and why they work. During the last 24 Conferences at least 170 papers have been presented by International Experts on these “simple” devices that range in length from 30-inches to 20 ft and from 5/8 to 2 inches in diameter. Roof bolts are primarily mechanically anchored, glued, cemented, or driven. Bolts are placed vertically, angled, or tied together with special fixtures (trusses and slings). They have been termed active, passive, stick-slip, and several other descriptive acronyms or mining slang expressions. This retrospective paper will present the changes in bolt types and usage, point out some of the biggest myths and hail the most significant advances (according to the authors’ opinions of course).

In 2012, a single module heavy medium cyclone plant (HMP) was installed at the Glencore Zinc’s (then Xstrata Zinc) McArthur River lead zinc mine. The HMP formed the first part of the MRM Phase 3 Project to increase run of mine (ROM) capacity from 2.4 to 5.5 Mt/a.The purpose of the HMP is to remove liberated gangue from the crusher product at minimal loss of valuable mineral. The McArthur ores are very finely disseminated requiring a fine primary grind size prior to rougher flotation. Rejecting waste prior to grinding therefore offers significant power and grinding media savings. The plant was designed to treat only those ores with a reasonable upgrade ratio at the target zinc recovery across the HMP of 95%.On this basis, a 1.8 Mt/a single module plant was built based on 250 t/h feed rate and 82% availability. In contrast to existing base metal heavy medium plants in Australia, the MRM Flow sheet utilised the principles in modern coal heavy medium cyclone plant design. Since commissioning, the plant feed rate has been significantly increased and is now normally operated up to 540 t/h (dry basis).Although this throughput increase is partially due to debottlenecking work, it is also attributable to the conservative design parameters for base metal heavy medium cyclone circuits in comparison to those used in equivalent coal circuits.This paper discusses Flow sheet design and compares traditional base metal design parameters with those achieved at MRM and those of modern coal plants. It provides information on plant capital and operating costs and the net savings realised by its installation. In addition to power and grinding cost savings, the paper also highlights the savings in water through rejection of near dry waste and reduction of tailings pumped to the storage dam.CITATION:Wallace, J, Strohmayr, S and Cameron, K, 2015. INTRODUCTION During a recent panel discussion on the topic of millwater antiscalants, the question was posed: "What would you like to see in the future?" Answer: 'We need an antiscalant that: can be fed without a pump (no maintenance), functions on residual basis (no fault), can be tested for colorimetrically in sub-part-per- mi 11 ion concentrations (no guessing) and will recycle back to the mill from tailings (no cost).” Impossible? Based upon today's level of technology, such a product does not exist. However, a few of the qualifications listed above are certainly food for future thought. Meanwhile, progress is being made in upgrading three essential elements in this critical area of ore processing. They are: 1. Antiscalant reagent research and development. 2. On-line monitoring programs. 3. Reagent storage and feed systems. The objective of this paper is to out- line the current direction being taken in each of these areas and to present case histories as examples of how theory has been applied in field situations to better improve operations. LABORATORY SCREENING TESTS Recent technical papers have explained the various generic chemical raw materials which are available in the marketplace. While the merits of each chemical component are open to debate, the processes used by most major reagent suppliers to evaluate products in the laboratory are fairly standard. Common techniques incorporate both static and dynamic conditions in the search for the most cost effective product. Static Test Perhaps the most common test procedure used is based upon NACE Standard Test Method 03-74, which is "a laboratory screening test to determine the ability of scale inhibitors to prevent precipitation of calcium sulfate and calcium carbonate from solution." The objective of this test is to measure the change in calcium ion concentration in a container of saturated stock solution prepared from calcium chloride and sodium carbonate which is heated in a water bath. After 12 hours at constant temperature (160°), the mother liquor is pipetted into a beaker and a titrated for gm/l of unprecipitated calcium ion. A simultaneous test is performed on stock solution with antiscalant added. The results are then charted to determine the most effective antiscalant (with respect to preventing precipitation of calcite). It should be noted that this procedure examines only the ability of a chemical additive to retain calcite in a saturated solution where thermal stress is applied. This is commonly referred to as sequestration or stabilization. It has been documented that products which act in this manner (i.e., inorganic and organic phosphates) are good scale inhibitors. However, low molecular weight anionic polymers function in a much different manner by distorting calcite crystal size, shape and charge density, thus preventing scale formation. Because of this different mode of operation, static tests may not prove conclusive where polymers and sequestrants are being compared. The simplicity of this test makes it easily adaptable for field use, although modifications are often made.

It is a pleasure and a privilege to be with you for the Annual Conference of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.The inaugural meeting of The Institute was held in Adelaide in April, 1893. Through the kindness of your President, who passed on to me several publications concerning The Institutute I have been able to glance back over the eighty years in which The Institute has served both the profession and Australia.In that record, many names of great distinction caught my eyes. When one reads the list of past presidents of the The Institute since 1893 and the list of those to whom The Institute Medal has been awarded, one reads the headings of a biographical dictionary of the Australian mineral industries. Many famous names are there-men from the great mining companies, engineers, scientists, metallurgists and geologists. Simply to read the names is to recall great enterprise and great achievement. Going over those names one hears the echoes of the inspiring story of the establishment of the Australian steel industry, the electrolytic zinc inq.ustry, all the major developments in the mining of coal, gold, copper, silver and lead, the treatment of difficult ores, the geological exploration of a cqntinent, the discovery of uranium, bauxite, petroleum, nickel, the establishment of the alumina industry and finally the mammoth earthmoving operations of today. The list of names is a chronicle of great men who did a mighty work. They stand like milestones in the progress of a nation.When one reads further and runs down the titles of some of the papers published in the Proceedings of The Institute even a layman like myself can appreciate the dramatic developments in mining and metallurgy that have transformed the whole practice of the mineral industries in our land. Australians have made some notable innovations and discoveries both in mining techniques and in the processing of ores. The history of mining is not only a story of the discovery of the mineral resources of this continent but of adventurous steps taken to perfect new ways of mining the ore and extracting the metal.I read with great admiration the presidential address given by Sir Maurice Mawby in 1968 and wa...

The efficiency of heap leaching is reduced by poor solution flow characteristics (i.e., channeling and ponding) that result from fines migration. Agglomeration of the ore can immobilize fines, but for agglomeration to be successful in copper leaching, an acid-resistant binder is needed to stabilize the agglomerates. Until now, there has not been a satisfactory method to evaluate whether a binder was effective, other than squeezing a handful to see if it ?feels right.? This paper reports on several procedures that have been developed to quantitatively determine whether a binder gives good performance in an acidic solution. These procedures have been used to identify binders that would be suitable for copper heap leaching.

Measurements of the effect of precipitation stresses on the solubility of cementite (Fe3C) precipitates in a iron are reported. Solubilities were determined from measurements of the Snoek relaxation due to interstitial carbon after quenching from various equilibrium treatments. Stress-free precipitates were obtained by a spheroidizing treatment of vacuum-melted Fe 0.06 wt pet C. Subsequent equilibration treatments were designed to suppress nucleation of other precipitates. The results for stress-free cementite give a heat of solution of 14.8 i 0.2 keal per mole and an entropy change of 1.1 i 0.2 eu in the temperature range 400" to 715°C. Comparison with previous data indicates that the heat of solution increases about 6 keal per mole as temperature increases from 700" to 1000°C. Data on self-stressed cementite in quench-aged specimens of Fe 0.013 wt pet C indicate 1) an apparent heat of solution of 12.1 i 0.4 keal per mole in the range 280" to 690°C, 2) a strain energy of- 1.1 keal per mole Fe3C accompanying precipitation at 280°C, and 3') a gradual decrease in the strain energy of precipitation with increasing equilibration temperature. In com-parison with 2 and 3 the strain energy calculated for an isotropic model is 1.7 keal per mole Fe3C. The lower values obtained from the experiment indicated substantial stress velaxation by dislocation motion. WHEN a supersaturated solution of carbon in a iron is aged at temperatures in the range 200o to 700oC, the carbon clusters by interstitial diffusion and forms cementite (Fe3C) precipitate particles. Unstressed cementite has a volume per iron atom 9 pet higher than that of a iron;' hence, cementite precipitate particles are usually under pressure from the iron matrix. The pressure would tend to increase the solubility of cementite in iron.' This report describes anelastic measurements of the solubilities of self-stressed and stress-free cementite in a iron. Previous determinations of the cementite solubility are summarized in Table I. The method of cementite formation for each reference was studied to ascertain the state of stress of the cementite. The results judged to be for stress-free and stressed cementite are distinguished in the table. In the next section an estimate of the stress effect is obtained which is clearly too small to account for the large difference between the previous results in parts A and B of the table. THEORETICAL Let AGO be the standard free-energy change of the reaction Fe3C (eem.) = 3Fe (a) + C (in a) [1] in the absence of stresses. Since cementite precipitates appear to be rather pure10 and the carbon is so dilute in the iron,8 the cementite and iron of Eq. [ I] for the stress-free case have essentially unit activities and the activity of carbon equals its atom fraction xoC Then the stress-free equilibrium is expressed by RT In XoC = -?GO 121 To first approximation the change in the chemical potential of carbon due to the precipitation stresses equals the elastic strain energy W accompanying precipitation of a mole of cementite.2 Hence, in the presence of the precipitation stresses the equilibrium is described by RT In x sq = -?G° + W [3] where xsC is the mole fraction of dissolved carbon in the stressed case. An approximate value of W can be obtained from analysis of the inclusion problem in elasticity theory. The inclusion is a small portion of the matrix phase which has suffered a transformation while still imbedded in the matrix. In the absence of the constraint of the matrix the transformation would be equivalent to a uniform dilational strain eT. Both the matrix (a) phase and inclusion (0) phase are assumed to be homogeneous, isotropic materials. When the a and 0 phases have the same elastic moduli, which is approximately true for iron and cementite,11 the total strain energy per mole ß is12 2µVß(eT)2(3 +4 µx)-I [4]

It is common practice in the mineral processing industry to use hydrocyclones for particle classification. However, classification in the UG2 platinum circuits using the hydrocyclone poses major challenges due to the differences in density between silica and chromite, the two major components of this ore. Silica, the PGM carrying component, has an average density of 2.7 and the barren chromite component has an average density of 4.5. When conventional and flat bottom cyclones are used there is a misplacement of particles due to differences in density leading to inefficiencies in the classification by size. As a result of the density effect, coarse silica reports to the overflow, resulting in loss of recovery, and fine chromite reports to the underflow, resulting in loss of milling capacity and unnecessary production of fine chromite. A classifier based on a different concept was required in the classification of UG2 platinum ore. The three-product cyclone, which is a hydrocyclone with two concentric vortex finders to produce three distinct products, has been tested in the UG2 ore application and indications are that misplacement of particles due to differences in the component densities can be minimized through the use of this unit. Industrial and pilot plant trials were conducted and indications are that the three-product cyclone can be installed to selectively produce a middlings stream that can be screened using Pansep screens to provide a screen oversize, which is predominantly coarse silica that can be preferentially reground to recover the PGM values contained in the coarse silica.

Solvent extraction as a method of purifying and concentrating metal values from solution has become a standard hydrometallurgical operation for recovery of both uranium and vanadium, and within the past two years it has been put into operation in a commercial plant for recovery of copper from leach solutions. In this first full scale solvent extraction plant for recovery of copper operated by Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation near Miami, Arizona, a kerosene solution of an organic compound, LIX-64® is used to selectively extract the copper from the dilute acidic copper sulfate leach liquor obtained from heap leach operations. The copper is back extracted from the solvent into a stripping solution which is fed to an electrolysis circuit producing cathode copper for sale.
