Single crystals of each metal were deformed at 77°K and heated at constant rates, variously in the range 0.125" to 4o°Kper min from 77" to -390oK, while being monitored in an X-ray diffractometer. Changes in diffraction-peak heights and line breadths were used to ascertain the temperature ranges of recrystalliza-tion. The results were subjected to the analysis of nicholas' in order to obtain the rate-controlling activation energies,Q. In this analysis no recourse to a separate and distinct nucleation stage is required and the results of studying recrystallization proved consistent with the hypothesis of a constant number of nuclei or equivalent hypotheses. The values Pb = 5.5 ± 0.5 keal per mole Zn ~ 7.5 Sn - 5 Bi - 9. 5 correspond for lead, zinc, and tin to activation energies obtained elsewhere for grain boundary migration, and for bismuth and lead to previous studies of re-crystallization by Barrett.6 This correlation allows the conclusions that interference from recovery was minimal and that the observed recrystallization rates in these pure metals are effectively governed by grain boundary migration. Good agreement was not found between the results of this kind of study in zone-refined aluminum and previous work; and supplementary isothermral experiments involving hardness tests and metallography did not resolve the discrepancy. Nevertheless, at least a range,Q = 11.5 ± 2 keal per mole, can be assigned to the activation energy for boundary migration in aluminum. An experimental study of one aspect of the recrystallization process is presented here for four metals of different crystal structure. The metals chosen for study were all zone-refined to reduce impurity effects, but the attendant high purity presented a difficulty. For any reasonably high driving force a "re-crystallization temperature", TR, is in the range of 0.25 T,, where T, is the absolute melting point, and study was therefore restricted to lower temperatures. An X-ray technique under constant heating-rate conditions adequate above 90°K was devised for the study; in consequence, a newer type of analysis following Nicholas1 had to be used to obtain quantitative information about activation energies. Various nondestructive testing (NDT) inspection methods are available to evaluate the structural integrity of cast-in-place shafts. The widely used methods include Cross Hole Sonic Logging Testing and Low Strain Testing. Due to its advantages such as low cost, easy operation, quickness and flexibility (no need to plan ahead and prepare inspection tubes or other devices), Low Strain Test is frequently specified in quality assurance programs of many countries or when doubts arise as to the integrity of the finished shafts/piles. The method is well suited for small to middle sized shafts. However it is an indirect NDT testing method and has certain limitations. Data interpretation requires proper training, experience and judgment and, therefore, inconsistent conclusions and reporting may be provided by different testers. To avoid or reduce such inconsistencies, it is best to follow a standardized data interpretation and record classification system. In this paper, a new classification method is presented with examples. A step-by-step data evaluation and interpretation procedure is proposed with examples of real cases to help understand the LST data. The paper also makes recommendations for measures to be taken when anomalies are detected in tested production piles.

Overcasts are indispensible ventilation control devices to permit one airway to pass over another without mixing in room and pillar coal mining. The airflow distribution inside the overcast depends on its spe-cific configuration at which the flow enters into it. This study uses 3D numerical simulation to examine the pressure and velocity distributions inside an overcast. The effects of the overcast angle on the flow field are also examined. The flow is assumed to be turbulent and isothermal and the standard k-e model is utilized. Simulated results display flow separation and recirculation regions of different sizes occurring not only upstream and downstream from the overcast but also inside it. The results also show that the size of the recirculation regions in-creased with the increase in the angle before and after the overcast influencing significantly the flow field and pressure losses. The stream-lines are plotted to show the 3D structure of the flow field. The results from the simulation can guide overcast design commonly used in un-derground coal mines. This paper shares the experience of the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) Field Surveillance Branch over the past few years in building relationships with Aboriginal communities. Our goal is to provide and encourage best practices that may benefit you and your organization and result in strong, mutually beneficial relationships with a focus on Aboriginal communities. Historical information provides insight that aids in establishing effective working relationships with Aboriginal communities. An important component is appreciation of the perspective of these communities, which is achieved through awareness training. The use of local Aboriginal resource people as part of the training is recommended. A plan that is supported by management and staff is essential and lays the foundation for successful relationships. However, the plan must be flexible enough to change as circumstances warrant. The concept of having local people in communities address local issues is essential. This ?grass roots? approach, combined with the goal of exceeding a community?s expectations with respect to addressing issues, will go a long way to establish trust and credibility. Measuring the effectiveness of this work is the final building block to complete the picture.

Recent data contributions to New Zealand Mesozoic terrane geology confirm the consensus interpretation thatNew Zealand grew by the progressive addition of material by plutonic and accretionary processes along the Gondwana margin. The data also: 1. emphasise the discontinuous but inter-related nature of these processes of continental growth, 2. better establish a direct Gondwana correlation of the Western Province and probable Gondwana provenance of at least some of the Eastern Province, 3. suggest specific times and places when passive or strike-slip rather than subduction regimes are recorded along the south Gondwana margin, and 4. potentially lead to interpretations emphasising parautochthonous rather than far travelled relationships between many New Zealand terranes.

The earliest authenticated scientific report of the occurrence of platinum in rocks from the Bushveld Complex appears to be by William Bettel on 10 November 1906. Thereafter, prospecting of the chromite-rich rocks for platinum proved frustrating. I suggest that the resurgence of interest shown by Dr Hans Merensky in 1924 resulted from his realization that newly panned platinum had a different grain size from that in the chromite layers and indicated a different source rock, which he located, and it became known as the Merensky Reef.

"The ninth yearly National Safety Competition covering the calendar year 1933, conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, w participated in by 332 mines and quarries situated in 35 States. Enrollment represented as increase of 10 plants over 1932, and one addition was made to the number of States represented.The primary purpose of the United. States Bureau of Mines in conducting the contest is to promote safety in United States mineral industries. This purpose is accomplished directly through the efforts of the competing companies and their employees to win first place in the competition and thereupon receive recognition on a national scale for their achievement the purpose is accomplished indirectly through studies by the United States Bureau of Mines of the facts contained in the accident reports the competing companies furnish to enable the Bureau to compute the accident rates that are the basis for determining the winners of the contest.The statistics which constitute the basis for determining the winning companies and the relative standing of all companies are prepared uniformly without regard to the States in which the companies operate, or to differences in classes of accidents covered by State laws relating to compensation for injuries resulting, from industrial accidents.Bronze trophies, known as 'Sentinels of Safety', which were provided by The Explosives Engineer magazine to be awarded annually by the Bureau of Mines, were presented to five companies in the contest of 1933, each company having established the best accident-prevention record within one of the five classes into which all companies were divided, namely, anthracite-mining companies, bituminous-coal-mining companies, metal-mining companies, operators of nonmetallic-mineral mines other than coal mines, and quarries or opencut mines. The trophies are awarded for 1 year and are then transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest.The trophy for bituincus-coal mines was won by a company in Wyoming. A company in Tennessee won the trophy for metal mining. In the nonmetal-mine group the trophy was again won by a company in New York. A quarry in Michigan won the trophy for the quarry-and-opencut-mine group. The trophy for anthracite mines remains in Pennsylvania, as all anthracite mines in the contest are in that State."

The self-diffusion of sodium in two sodium silicate liquids was measured in the temperature range 850" to 1500°C by the capillary-reservoir technique. Radioactive Na 22 was used as the tracer. The total count and autoradiographic methods were used for determination of the total Na 22 depletion and diffusion profiles of the dqy-used specimens. The diffusion coefficients obtained by the autoradiographic technique are slightly smaller than those obtained by a total count method. Error analysis of the two methods suggests that more confidence be placed in the results of the total count method. The experimental results were analyzed in terms of the existing activated rate process theory. The activation energy for diffusion was shown to decrease markedly as the temperature increased. This was attributed to a variation in the heat of activation with temperature, probably related to a change in the distribution of anions associated wilh the cation. In terms of a model, suggested for diffusion in liquid silicates, differences in the aclivation energies for diffusion and electrical conduction may arise from the effect of the electric field applied in conduction measurements. It is generally accepted that liquid silicates consist of cations and an equilibrium distribution of complex anions determined by temperature and composition. Transport properties in molten silicates are of interest, not merely because of their relevance to the kinetics of pyrometallurgical reactions and glassmak-ing processes, but also because they are useful to development of the theory of such ionic liquids. Self-diffusion is one such transport process that may, if studied for liquid silicates of widely varying compositions, indicate structural changes through changes in the activation energy for diffusion. The self-diffusion of calcium, silicon,' sulfur: aluminum, 4 and oxygenS in lime-alumina-silica melts and of iron6 in molten iron silicates have been measured. Unfortunately, the errors in some of the reported activation energies for diffusion are too large to allow firm conclusions concerning structure and the mechanism of the diffusion process to be drawn. The research reported here was a study of the self-diffusion of sodium in liquid sodium silicates. The soda-silica system was chosen since: i) a reasonable composition range can be covered in the binary system at moderate temperatures; ii) suitable isotopes of sodium (radioactive Na 22 and NaZ4) can be obtained; iii) data on the electrical conductivity and viscosity of sodium silicate liquids are available. However, the range of composition actually used in diffusion experiments was limited, to 20 to 35 wt pct soda, by the relatively high viscosity of silica-rich compositions and by evaporation of soda from basic melts. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The capillary-reservoir technique was used, wherein a radioactive tracer, Na 22, incorporated in the capillary melt, was allowed to diffuse out of the platinum capillary tube into a large reservoir of silicate liquid containing a chemically identical melt, but without radioactive tracer. After a specific diffusion time, both the total depletion in the tracer concentration and concentration-distance profiles of the diffused samples were measured by procedures to be described later. The diffusion cell assembly was similar to that used by Koros and King.' The temperature of the diffusion cell was measured with a calibrated Pt, Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple located at the center of the liquid reservoir. The same thermocouple was used to obtain the temperature profile in the reservoir. The temperature at the top of the reservoir was slightly higher (2°C) than that at the bottom, to minimize convection in the capillary tubes, which were placed, open end up, in the reservoir. Convection was not expected to be a problem since the length-to-diameter ratio of the tubes was about 12:1 and the maximum capillary diameter was 1 mm. The diffusion cell was heated in a molybdenum-wire resistance furnace, previously used by Koros and King, but somewhat modified. A Pt, Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple enclosed in an alumina tube and located near the furnace winding was used in conjunction with a preamplifier and Micromax proportional controller for temperature control, within 4°C, at temperatures near 1500°C. Before starting a diffusion run, the furnace was heated to the desired temperature and an alumina guide assembly for the capillaries was slowly lowered to within 2 cm of the liquid reservoir. The capillaries were thus heated to about the temperature of the bath. The run was started by lowering the assembly till the open ends of the capillaries were about 1 cm below the surface of the liquid. The run was ended by raising the assembly to about 15 cm above the liquid bath. Later, the sample assembly was slowly withdrawn from the furnace. Six diffusion samples were usually run at the same time. Three runs made with the open ends of the capillaries down were discarded because in the majority of these samples air bubbles trapped at the open end were observed. Some glass adhered to the outside of the capillary on withdrawal. This was carefully removed and used to check that the Na 22 activity in the sink remained at a low level. Materials. Nonradioactive sodium silicates were prepared by melting, in a platinum crucible, weighed quantities of sodium carbonate and powdered silica. The Magmont Mine, a 50/50 venture between Cominco American Incorporated (the Operator) and Dresser Industries, Inc., (Halliburton), is a metallic mining and milling facility in the new lead belt of Missouri. The mine is located approximately 100 miles southwest of St. Louis. Legislation passed in 1992 by the Missouri legislature requires all metallic mining and processing facilities to apply for a Metallic Minerals Waste Management permit (MMWM) for their waste facilities. Regulations were subsequently promulgated by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Cominco obtained a MMWM permit (MM-006) from the Missouri DNR in 1992.

"When confronted with the difficult decisions on advancing an exploration project to the feasibility and construction stages, it is important to know how various regions of the ore body will react in the milling and concentration processes. While bench scale test work is common and inexpensive, the results and information provided are somewhat limited due to the difficulty in accurately predicting the effects of recirculating middling streams or gradual changes in solution chemistry.Conventional Pilot Plants, processing 100 to 1,000 kg/hour of sample ore, provide the detailed engineering data required to develop a final process flowsheet and to size the equipment. They are, however, expensive to set-up and operate, and are really only viable for major projects that are well advancedIn the latter part of 1999, the Mineral Development Center at CVRD (MDC) purchased a new piece of mineral processing equipment which can run continuous flotation tests using drill core samples. To evaluate its performance, and to compare it with conventional testing methods, various types of flotation tests were carried out using two different types of copper ore. The limitations and advantages of open circuit and locked cycle bench tests, as well as the Mini Pilot Plant and the Conventional Pilot Plant were evaluated.Open circuit tests carried out at the bench scale only provide basic information. More complete and trustworthy information is obtained, in terms of the recirculation of flows and reaching a permanent and stable flotation regime, as the dynamics and complexity of the tests increases. The data obtained showed that the MPP’s metallurgical performance was equivalent to that of a conventional pilot plant."

"China is the world's largest steel producer, in order to give environment load comprehensive analysis of steel and iron industry in china using LCA method, the life cycle inventory was compiled and assessment model based on Gabi software was also established. Environmental impact of two different routes ofBF-BOF and the EAF were analyzed respectively and intercompared. The results show that the modem EAF route is superior to the traditional BFBOF route on almost all the environmental impact indexes, which including acidification potential, eutrification potential, global warming potential, ozone depletion potential, etc. In the whole life cycle ofBF-BOF route in China, the transporting process ranks the biggest contribution part to the overall global warming potential, which can be explained by the fossil fuel burning of transporting vehicles during the long distance from Australia to China as the iron ore used are mainly imported from Australia. Apart from transporting process, Coking, blast furnace and iron mining processes could induce great environmental problems, while for the EAF route, the electricity consumption is considerable, which causing large amount ofC02 emission indirectly. Based on the analysis, several further countermeasures were proposed. At the year of2009, China crude steel output of 568 million tons, accounting for 46.6% of the global crude steel production, more than the total sum of crude steel production produced by 20 countries ranked behind. In 2011, China's crude steel production which is expected to be or close to 700 million tons, an increase of 12% than last year, will account for half of the global steel production.The steel industry, however, is intensive resources industry with huge consumptions of energy and water together with mineral resources. Energy consumption of the iron and steel industry has been about 10% of the total energy consumption since 1980. Coal dominants, power next and other energies share least in the energy consumption structure, for example coal accounts for 72.19%, power 23.52% and other total sums less than 5% in the steel energy consumption at year of 2002[2,3]. The consumption of coal discharges much emission of CO2, yet emissions of C02 in China steel industry, secondary only to the power and cement industry, ranked the third, and the coal dominant energy structure and its process have a close relationship. The aim of this research is to target steel production of typical blast furnace-converter (BFBOF) and electric furnace, using GABI software to evaluate and analyze resources and environment influence of LCA, directing at the existing problems in the development of China steel as well as finding the possible way to improve ability of reducing pollution and energy consumption in order to realize the sustainable development of the steel industry [ 4-7]."

"SynopsisLong before the environmental movement, coal miners were suffering from occupational diseases that became apparent in the later years of service, and especially during the retirement years. Chronic exposure to micro-fine dust in the respirable range (‘float’ dust) causes various lung diseases, referred to as coal mine dust lung disease. In the USA alone, 76 000 miners have died of coal mine dust lung disease since early legislation recognized the issue in 1969. Researchers believe that reducing float dust exposure limits alone will not reverse the increasing incidence of coal mine dust lung disease seen in the current generation of miners. Trace and radioactive metals are concentrated in the thin boundary layers of the coal seam (Roberts, 2013), and hence float dust includes silica and toxic trace metals. The production and quality of coal is also significantly impacted by the presence of these contaminants in the coal. In the combustion process, the trace metals are oxidized and become incorporated in the fly ash and flue gas. Since they are extremely water-soluble, they represent a significant danger to health and the environment. Coal preparation plants and power stations need to mitigate these contaminants as far as is practical, but the simple fact is that most contaminants should have been left un-mined.This paper describes an innovative coal-cutting solution to the longstanding technology gap in mining – the ability to measure uncut coal layer thickness to the boundary rock layer. Because of constant changes in geology, seam thickness, and seam undulation, the horizon sensor must be located in the bit-block of the rotating cutter drum of the mining machine. Contaminants in ROM coal must be minimized at the source – that is, at the rock/coal crushing cone directly under the bit-tips of the cutting drum. Bittip distances to the rock boundary layer must be automatically controlled in real time when mining in a complex and undulating coal bed. Horizon sensing (HS) technology enables the mining machine’s cutting picks to stop at a specified distance from undulating horizons of the boundary rock. The thin contaminated coal layer can be left in situ, significantly reducing the toxicity of the float dust. Preventing the metal picks from striking quartz-containing boundary rock also reduces the occurrence of methane ignitions. HS technology equipped with pick force vector sensing can allow optimization of the cutting pick lacing pattern for minimum coal and rock crushing, thereby reducing float dust. This technology may enable the mining industry to convert from automated machine control to autonomous during coal cutting and loading."

"This paper presents the basic theory of operation, physical chemistry and phase equilibria which allow the development of liquid-liquid extraction circuits based on metallic solvents. The incorporation of reduction and reduction/diffusion processes into the process scheme is discussed and a detailed description of several liquid-liquid extraction schemes are developed. A synopsis of experimental results obtained using this method to separate rare earth and other metal based materials will be given.IntroductionConcerns over the effects of waste materials in the environment has been one of the significant social hallmarks of the late 20th century. Essentially every industrialized country has had to incorporate the cost of waste material into the equation of production. Legislative initiatives have led to the passing of very tough laws, by historical standards, which govern the environmental impact of materials processing.Liquid-Liquid extraction is a very common unit operation normally using aqueous and/or organic based solvents. Early work at the Ames Laboratory focused on the use of this technique for the reprocessing of spent fuel from liquid metal breeder reactors by the use of metallic solvents. Recently, we have revisited this area as a means to recycle/reprocess several emerging rare earth based materials, although this method has a much wider range of application. The reinvestigation of this technology is particularly timely as hydrometallurgical based processes are coming under increasing scrutiny in the U.S.A. by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Although technology currently exists to remove contaminants from aqueous based waste streams, often the application of such methods is expensive. With proper design and judicious selection of reagents liquid metal extraction can achieve a high recovery along with a benign waste stream.This process has several possible advantages over other technologies. First is the elimination of aqueous solvents. Therefore, problems associated with disposal or reprocessing of the aqueous carrier are eliminated. Second, with proper system design, very high separation coefficients can be obtained thus limiting the number of stages required. Third, metals are extracted from metals with a metallic product, thereby eliminating the need to re-reduce metal for oxides or other compounds which are the common output for aqueous based extraction procedures."

The importance of dissolved oxygen as a principal reagent in the refining of liquid steel and the necessity for its removal in the finishing of many grades have stimulated numerous studies of its chemical behavior in the steel bath. From the thermodynaniic viewpoint the essential data are those which determine the free energy of oxygen in solution as a function of temperature and composition of the molten metal. A number of experimental studies have been reported in recent years from which the free energy of oxygen in iron-oxygen melts can be obtained with a fair degree of accuracy for temperatures not too far from the melting point. Certain discrepancies remain, however, which imply considerable uncertainty at higher temperatures; also several sources of error were recognized in the earlier studies. It has been the object of the experimental work reported in this paper to reexamine these sources of uncertainty and to redetermine the equilibrium condition in the reaction of hydrogen with oxygen dissolved in liquid iron. The reaction and its equilibrium constant are: H2 (g) + Q = H2O (g); K1 _ PH2O / [1] Ph2 X % O Here the underlined symbol Q designates oxygen dissolved in liquid iron. The activity of this dissolved oxygen is known to be directly proportional to its concentrationl,2 and is taken as equal to its weight percent. The closely related reaction of dissolved oxygen with carbon monoxide has also been investigated:3,4,5 co (g) +O = CO?(g); K _ Pco2___ [2] K2= pco X % O [2] The two reactions are related through the wat,er-gas equilibriuni: H2 (g) + CO2 (g) = CO (g) + H2O (g); K2 = PCO X PH2O [3] PH2 X PCO2 and with the aid of the accurately known equilibrium constant of this reaction, it has been shown5 that the experimental data on reactions [1] and 121 are in fairly good, though not exact, agreement. Experimental Method Great care was taken to avoid the principal sources of error of previous studies, namely, gaseous thermal diffusion and temperature measurement. The apparatus was designed to provide controlled preheating of the inlet gases and to permit the addition of an inert gas (argon) in controlled amounts, two measures found to be essential for elimination of thermal diffusion. A known mixture of water vapor and hydrogen was obtained by saturating purified hydrogen with water vapor at controlled temperature. This mixture, with the addition of purified argon, was passed over the surface of a small melt (approximately 70 g) of electrolytic iron in a closed induction furnace. After sufficient time at constant temperature for attainment of equilibrium the melt was cooled and analyzed for oxygen. GAS SYSTEM A schematic diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig 1. Commercial hydrogen is led through the safety trap T and the flowmeter F. The catalytic chamber C, held at 450°C, was used to convert any oxygen into water-vapor. A by-pass B with stopcocks was provided so that the hydrogen could be introduced directly from the tank to the furnace when desired. From the catalytic chamber the gas passed through a water bath W, kept at the desired temperature by an auxiliary heating unit, so that the gas was burdened with approximately the proper amount of water vapor before it was introdvced into the saturator S. All connections beyond the catalytic chamber were of all-glass construction. Those connections beyond the water bath were heated to above 80°C to prevent the condensation of water vapor. After the saturator, purified argon was led into the steam-hydrogen line at J, and finally the ternary mixture was introduced into the furnace. THE SATURATOR The saturator unit comprised three glass chambers, as shown in Fig 1, the first two chambers packed with glass beads and partially filed with water and the third empty. Each tower had a glass tube with a stopper attached for the purpose of adjusting the amount of water in it. The unit was immersed in a large oil bath, which was automatically controlled with the help of a thermostat relay to constant temperature, ± 0.05ºC, using thermometers which had been calibrated against a standard platinum resistance thermometer. The performance of the saturator over the range of experimental conditions was checked by weighing the water absorbed from a measured volume of hydrogen; the observed ratio was always within 0.5 pct of theoretical.

The small party of mining men who formed the original Mount Morgan Syndicate in 1882, commenced operations on the top of the mountain with what were practically nothing more than small hillside quarries, It was not until 1891 that underground stoping began, and open-cut mining therefore commenced with the commencement of operations. This hillside quarrying, however, seems to have been quite haphazard and unsystematic ; there is no trace or sign of any properly devised mining scheme. This can be seen plainly enough from an examination of old mine plans; for in less than five years after stoping was; adopted, the open-cut was down into the stoped-out ground. The following table, prepared from these old plans, shows the downward trend of the excavation in the past fiftyseven years:-

An experimental investigation has been carried out using a laboratory scale Denver flotation cell. For evaluation of cokeable coal of Alborze Sharghi coal washing plant, the full factorial method was used to statistically design and analyse the experiments. The 2 factorial interaction model were developed for combustible recovery and ash content as response and diesel dosage, conditioning time, feed percent solids and rotor speed as factors. Model validation and residual analysis were con-ducted and results indicated that the fitness, predictability power and residual distributions of models were good. The effect of parameters and interactions were examined and it has been demonstrated that rotor speed, solid percent and interaction between diesel dosage and solid percent were more important terms of all responses. A product with approximately 78% combustible recovery and 10% ash content was obtained at 4000gr/ton diesel fuel oil (high level), 30 sec conditioning time (low level), feed percent solids of 15% (low level) and 800 rpm rotor speed in appropriate condition.

The area described in this paper lies along the inner margin of the Coastal' Plain in Twiggs County, near the exact center of the State of Georgia. Twiggs is one of four counties which produces approximately 75 per cent of the nationals output of kaolin used in the paper trade. In this vicinity the land surface is characterized by coastal plain hills with elevations ranging from about 250 feet, above mean sea level in the flood plain of: the Ocmulgee River to about 550 feet above mean sea level on the hill tops. Surface drainage in the area is southwestward to the Ocmulgee River, the tributaries of which have dissected the land surface exposing thick sections of the upper parts of the hills of Eocene (Ocala Limestone and Barnwell formation) limestone, sand, marl and clay, and in the lower parts of the hills Cretaceous (Tuscaloosa Formation) kaolin, kaolinitic clay, sandy clay, sand and, gravel. The contact between these two principal groups of geologic units is rather easil distinguished as the top of the kaolinitic beds. It is described in detail and mapped in published geologic reports for the area (LaMoreaux, 1946).
