It has been shown that the incorporation of fly ash into concrete as a replacement for part of the cement can be beneficial. In some cases, the strength of the concrete can be increased and the permeability can be decreased. This latter property can lead to a reduction in the migration and/or penetration of aggressive species into reinforced concrete. Some of these species, such as chlorides from deicing salts or marine environments, can subsequently result in accelerated corrosion of the steel reinforcement, a loss of the protection provided by the passive film on steel, and a loss of structural integrity of the concrete. Care has to be taken so that the appropriate compositions of the components of the fly ash are utilized in order to ensure maximum benefit to the concrete structures. This will be discussed as it relates to fly ash generation and treatment.

In this paper, the effects of matte grade, flux grain size, blast flowrate and blast O2 content on the process of silica flux melting in a copper converter were investigated. The results showed that the blast flowrate and the blast 02 content were not significant factors in the melting process. However, with an increase in grain size of flux and grade of matte, the amount of the flux molten decreased. The data on the melt rate of process correspond well with the mathematical model which simulates the chemical reactions occurring at the interface. The kinetic equations of melting are as follow:

This study has been carried out to develop a relatively simple hydrometallurgical process for recovering nickel as nickel sulfate from the spent nickel-cadmium battery residue in which cadmium was removed by vacuum distillation. This residue is composed of 36 % nickel, 20 % iron, and other metals such as cobalt. First, crushing and selective classification were performed to separate iron to produce a nickel-rich product (over 40 % nickel). This product was dissolved in sulfuric acid to obtain a nickel sulfate solution. During the dissolution, nitric acid and air were added to the system to enhance the iron oxidation reaction rate. The free acid remaining in the dissolved solution was neutralized by adding nickel carbonate. Iron was precipitated as iron hydroxide and removed from the solution. The nickel sulfate solution was then fed to a vacuum evaporator to concentrate the solution by evaporation of water and crystallized at around 45°C to obtain nickel sulfate hexahydrate. A recrystallization process could remove other impurities such as zinc and manganese.

Process control limitations have led to suboptimal performance of the crushing section of Sishen MineÆs Jig Plant. The performance of the PID (proportional-integral-derivative) controller implemented during commissioning was hampered by the relatively small buffer capacity between the crushers and screens. The inability to maintain the tertiary crushing chamber under full choke conditions lead to inefficient crushing and reduced crusher product cubicity.Model predictive control (MPC) was implemented in the tertiary crusher plant in May 2012 and resulted in a throughput improvement of six per cent in its first month. The controller was further optimised and indicated a throughput improvement of 16 per cent during on/off testing in July 2012. The throughput improvement is attributable to the finer crusher product resulting from operating the crusher under full choke conditions and controlled feed rate to the tertiary crusher plant screens. The next step is to couple the model predictive controller, automated gap control system and an economic optimiser to ensure maximised throughput and value from the resource.CITATION:Leeka, E K, 2013. This report is the fifth in a series concerning the Bureau of Mines program for microfilming maps of abandoned mines in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. A catalog of the microfilmed maps of 47 of 49 major mines and 18 independent mines in the Southern field is presented. Previous reports included catalogs of microfilmed maps of mines in the Eastern Middle field, the Wyoming and Lackawanna Basins of the Northern field, and the Western Middle anthracite field.

"Aerosol processing of materials such as (i) gas-to-particle conversion process (e.g., Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) method) and (ii) liquid (or droplet)-to-particle conversion process (e.g., spray pyrolysis) has become of major interest to produce novel submicron- or nanometer-sized particulate material used in electronic and chemical industries. After reviewing recent theoretical and experimental researches on the evaluation of properties and morphology of fine particles by the CVD and spray pyrolysis methods, the importance of the process engineering approach· for aerosol processing of materials and the use of advanced aerosol measurement technology have been pointed out.IntroductionMaterial synthesis via aerosol processing offers a route to producing nanometer-sized and submicrometer-sized particles of high purity with specifically tailored chemical and physical properties. Especially, single nanometer-sized particles (nanoparticle materials) are considered to play an important role in the synthesis of nanostructured materials as well as in nanotechnology in 21st century due to their quantum effect and so on.However, the transformation of gaseous or liquid precursors to the final functional particulate matters consists of various complex chemical and physical processes. In order to control the size distribution and morphology of produced particles, it is important to analyze and model various phenomena, such as gas-phase or liquid-phase chemical reaction, nucleation, condensation, agglomeration and sintering that occur simultaneously in aerosol material processing. By introducing the Aerosol Science and Materials Science, the authors have been trying to model the changes in particle properties and morphology by gas-to-particle conversion and droplet-to-particle conversion processes. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Bachelor of Engineering-Mining Venetia Mine, an open-pit diamond mining operation in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, currently has a mixed haul truck fleet consisting of Caterpillar 785B and C; 789C; modified 793D and 793D. Even in an ideal situation these trucks have different cycle times, which causes queuing at the loading area and their different speeds cause bunching on the ramps, leading to higher overall cycle times and lower productivity. This problem was identified but the root causes of the problem were not investigated and quantified. A time and motion study on the haul trucks was thus undertaken to measure actual cycle times and compare them to ideal cycle times as well as to observe any reasons for deviations. Ideal cycle times are partly evaluated on the basis of simulation and partly from production optimization expert input. Several areas that affect production were identified and these include: haul road conditions, the control room, dispatching programme and dispatching data management, as well as truck-shovel matching. The investigation was important in establishing control parameters for haul fleet operation since time spent queuing is production time lost, which defers waste tonnes to later in the life of mine, thus decreasing the tempo at which kimberlite is exposed.

Beaches contain the residue of eroded rocks which have resisted weathering, and it is common to find in all beaches some of the harder, heavy minerals. The natural sorting action of waves and winds tends to concentrate the heavy minerals into banded deposits.The value of such deposits is extremely variable. Even amongst the more concentrated deposits, the principal minerals, in the vast majority of cases, are magnetic, titaniferous magnetite and other forms of iron oxide, which, in the present state of mineral economics and technology, are of little or no value.Valuable minerals of fairly common occurrence in beach sand deposits are rutile, zircon, ilmenite, monazite and chromite, and each of these minerals, as well as others of less common occurrence, is obtained from beach deposits in various parts of the world.Along a stretch of 300 miles of coast from Coff's Harbour in New South Wales to North Stradbroke Island in Queensland, occur unique concentrations of heavy minerals. The principal minerals which occur are rutile, zircon and ilmenite, and for some years these deposits have contributed half to three-quarters of the world's consumption of rutile and zircon 1, ,2. The only other notable beach sand concentrations in Australia are at a number of places in the southwest of Western Australia, where deposits containing highgrade ilmenite are being developed.

Flotation work conducted by CSIRO on both single minerals and high-arsenic copper ores from a number of sources, has shown it is possible to produce separate low-arsenic copper concentrates and high-arsenic copper concentrates from high-arsenic copper ores. The procedure involves controlled separations at high or low pulp potential regions exploiting subtle differences in the flotation behavior of the arsenic-bearing and non-arsenic-bearing copper minerals. An overview of several case studies investigating the applicability of the controlled potential flotation approach to the separation of copper and arsenic from sulfide copper ores is presented. It highlights the variables which influence the efficiency of the separation which include mineralogy, liberation and reagent selection. The procedure can produce a saleable low-arsenic copper concentrate, which can be directly smelted without penalty, and a high-arsenic low copper concentrate, which will require further processing. The common law requires an employer to take reasonable steps for the safety of employees. In general, the duty of care means that the employer, acting personally or through its employees or agents, must take reasonable care for the safety of its employees (Van Deventer v Workmen?s Compensation Commissioner; 1962 (4) SA 28 T; Oosthuizen v Homegas (Pty) Ltd 1992 (3) SA 463 T).The duty of care includes the provision of safe premises, safe machinery and tools and a safe system of work. The obligation is not an absolute one, but is restricted by the concept of reasonableness. The common law duty may, in certain cases, include the assessment of hazards and risks. 2 International law Great emphasis has been placed in the Western world on the prevention of occupational diseases and injuries. Detailed statutes and regulations govern specific industries in many countries. See, e.g. the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations of the United Kingdom and various regulations applicable to the use of asbestos and lead, fire protection, mines and quarries, petroleum, etc. Risk management is an important part of managing health and safety. In the United Kingdom, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, 1999, require every employer to make a ?suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to health and safety of his employees to which they are exposed whilst they are at work?. The particularity of the assessment is determined by the risk in question.

El proyecto comprende el desarrollo de tres fases: La primera fase comprende la definición de los principales equipos críticos que podrían afectar a la producción, asímismo la implementación y estandarización de redes de comunicación entre equipos críticos para finalmente desarrollar interfaces HMI que supervisen variables relativas a Mantenimiento. La segunda fase, integra todos los sistemas de supervisión y control de planta con los sistemas de seguimiento “online” de Mantenimiento (fase 1), desarrollando un solo sistema de tratamiento y análisis de información de planta; y la tercera fase comprende la instalación y el desarrollo de aplicaciones basadas en tecnologías Cliente/Servidor con base SQL, que finalmente proporcionan la información y los medios para realizar consultas que optimizan el seguimiento y toma de decisiones relacionado al mantenimiento preventivo/predictivo.

The use of a time series variogram as an aid in controlling the quality of a product was pioneered by Pierre M. Gy and is described. The ability to analyse and interpret covariance relationships time series data is possible using the variogram. The concept of stream heterogeneity allows sources of variability in process streams to be identified and isolated. Principally this is distributional heterogeneity that is due to a short range effect of segregation in the process stream related to size or composition distribution of the material on a local scale and due to a long-range change in the size and grade of the material stream. The variogram is simply a tool for representing these sources of variability in a way that is explicit, allowing identification of the source and providing important insights to temporal continuity between samples. This paper describes the chronologically related large-scale variability in an iron ore process stream (%Fe), and illustrates the control and mitigation of variability at various stages within the process using a variogram. Three main sources of variability are identified including the random variability V[0], the process variability V[1], and the variability due to cyclical phenomena V[cyclic], arising from human routine or mechanical defects. These sources of variability can be represented on the control chart that provides the plant superintendent with insights as to the sampling capability of the systems in place. Maintaining levels of variability within customer specification limits requires that production systems be controlled without overcorrecting for the trends in changing quality. This can be done only by representing the limits of control relative to the limits of specification on a control chart. Where the specification limits encroach on the control limits, one or the other, or both, may need to be changed; specification limits that constrain the control limits lead to reactive decision making that is expensive and stressful for plant operators.

Momentum wheels with superconducting bearings can integrate both attitude control and energy storage functions, with attendant savings in the total volume and weight of hardware, and power consumption, all of which are in short supply on mini-satellites. We have built and tested a prototype with a wheel of mass 1.9 kg, diameter 3.25 in, and height 3 in, which can store 3.5 J-sec of angular momentum and 5 kJ of energy when it rotates at an angular speed of 15000 RPM. The energy density of 2.5 kJ/kg achieved is comparable with the lower range for lead-acid batteries. To show that the wheel is energy efficient, we have performed spin down tests and measured the input power required to sustain rotational speed. Results indicate that power consumption, even accounting for the needs of cooling system, is significantly smaller than that for state of the art commercial reaction wheels.

The Tamano smelter and refinery has expanded its production from 228kt/y to 260kt/y since 2006. It was not a big jump, but efficient and economical improvements were executed. These were not only de-bottlenecking and modernization of the smelting plant, including the acid plant, but also additional processes were commissioned, e.g. slag cleaning furnace and steam dryer. On the other hand, a conversion to permanent cathode process in the #2 tank house made the biggest impact on production efficiency for the refinery plant. In order to overcome the drastic change of copper business, although each scale is not so big, continuous improvements are very important to survive. This paper mainly describes the recent improvements of the smelting plant.

Consolidation Coal Co. tested the agglomeration of fine coal using a laboratory pellet mill. The principal operating variables examined were feed coal moisture, coal size distribution, and additives to the feed coal. The moisture of the feed coal was found to be critical to both the pellet mill operability and the product strength. Coals, with feed moistures too high to pelletize, could be pelletized if mixed with lime or a water absorbent material. The addition of dry starch binder improved the product strength.
