The Hilton and George Fisher deposits occur 22 and 24 km north of Mount Isa, NW Qld, Australia respectively. Both deposits occur as deformed Proterozoic, sediment hosted, stratiform orebodies hosting Pb-Zn-Ag (Hilton) and Zn-Pb-Ag (George Fisher) mineralisation. The two deposits are separated by approximately 2 km of strongly faulted barren shales, mudstones and siltstones along strike. Despite this, correlations between the Hilton and George Fisher deposits have previously been assumed on the basis of textural, lithological and geochemical similarities, but previously lacked specific details to prove exact stratigraphic matches.Feasibility drilling allowed broad correlations based on the position of siltstone pillars separating individual orebodies. However the position of continuous potassium-rich, siliceous and cross-fractured tuffaceous marker beds (TMBs) often used as stratigraphic markers within the Hilton Mine were initially unrecognised within the George Fisher stratigraphy where they are erratically silicified and often not cross-fractured resulting in correlations being difficult to prove. As a more detailed knowledge of TMB locations at George Fisher was gained it was possible to look for corresponding TMBs within the Hilton orebodies. Recent underground stope definition drilling at the two locations enabled specific TMBs, stratigraphic units and even individual sedimentary beds to be matched between the two locations, despite the large separation between mines.The correlation between the two deposits has implications for future exploration drilling north of George Fisher. If a specific stratigraphic horizon can be determined within one hole, positioning of further drillholes can be more accurately planned. The significance of having stratigraphic matches between Hilton and George Fisher also has implications for correlations with other Isa Valley deposits. Convincing preliminary TM and stratigraphic correlations have already been made between George Fisher and the Isa Lead Mine 24 km to the south.

Nanocrystalline CdS:In thin films with particle size in the range (3-36 nm) were produced by the spray pyrolysis technique on glass substrates. The films were characterized by investigating their X-ray diffractograms (XRD), scanning electron microscope images (SEM), transmittance curves and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The size of the nanocrystallites was estimated from XRD difractograms and then from the hyperbolic band model and the bandgap energies of the nano- particles, which were calculated from the positions of the minima in the first derivative curve of the absorbance. Fine-structured PL spectra confirmed the nanocrystalline nature of the films.

Recent innovations in atomization of molten metals have occurred in the area of single fluid atomization. Impulse Atomization (IA), one of the single fluid techniques, provides unique capabilities to study different regimes of atomization in a controlled environment. By changing processing variables, a mono-dispersed distribution of droplets above one millimeter in diameter can be produced. This is accomplished through proper characterization of the forces influencing the process and in particular the flow of melt through the orifice. This paper will discuss the approach and illustrate results with molten aluminum and cobalt.

Oil can enter a flotation circuit from a number of sources (for example, from mining equipment, oil leaks from the grinding equipment and coatings on the grinding media, but to name a few). Folklore generally states that any oil that contaminates the ore entering the flotation circuit is considered to have a negative impact on flotation. That is, a loss in concentrate grade and recovery.This represents a dilemma for some grinding media suppliers, who use a variety of quenching medium (air, polymer, oil or water) to achieve the desired physical properties of the ball. In the case of high chrome grinding media it is necessary, in some instances, to quench in oil to give the ball the right degree of toughness, which invariably leads to these balls having a thin film of oil on their surface. Once the grinding media arrives on site and site personnel recognise that the balls are “covered” in oil, they generally insist that the oil will have a deleterious impact on flotation performance.Obviously, any supplier “worth their salt” would take remedial action at the point of manufacture to minimise this problem. However, does quenching oil actually present a significant “threat” to the flotation process? This paper provides both laboratory and plant data describing the effect quenching oil has on the flotation of copper sulphide ore, with surprising results!

Highwall mining is a highly mechanized coal mining method associated with several advantages, such as a very high production rate (approximately 3,000 t/d) and low production costs. There is no requirement for underground support, ventilation, or blasting. Production leads to added recovery, which is otherwise lost in the ultimate pit. The use of highwall mining can bridge the gap that exists between supply and demand in the energy sector. This paper presents a brief review of highwall mining technology, including current status, analysis tools, and design techniques. In addition, it identifies important parameters from the analysis of failure case studies.

Coal is produced, in commercial quantities, in thirty-five of the fifty-five counties of West Virginia. Oil and gas are produced, commercially, in forty-two counties. So, you may readily see that coal, oil and gas arc closely related as to production areas. Many of the West Virginia coal mines are studded with oil and gas wells, as drilling has been done in thirty-two of the coal bearing counties. When the drilling of oil and gas wells was placed under the regulatory control of the Department of Mines on June I, 1929, it was estimated, by the State Geological Survey, that 64,000 wells had been drilled in West Virginia and that 34,000 wells were then being operated as oil and gas producers. No records of many of these remaining 30,000 abandoned wells exist and some of them remain a standing menace to safety as our coal extraction continues. Of a total of 13,100 new wells drilled since June 1929, approximately 5200 have been drilled through coal measures. Approximately 7000 wells, which were drilled through coal measures, have been abandoned in the same period of time. Many of these wells were drilled prior to the enactment of the oil and gas laws. Prior to the enactment of the Oil and Gas Law, which established the Oil and Gas Division of thc Department of Mines in 1929, there had been several mine ex-plosions attributable to cutting into un- charted wells and the improper plugging of other wells. The most serious explosion was that of Mines No. 47 and No. 49 of the Consolidation Coal Co. in Marion Co., when one of the so-called plugged wells leaked or seeped through some 80 ft of strata to the coal bed elevation, filling the mine with gas, the gas being ignited, killing a good many men and wrecking two coal mines. Legislation, to combat well hazards to coal mines, was slow in coming. In 1928, R. M. Lambie, then Chief of the Dept. of Mines, got sufficient support from coal, oil and gas interests to get the legislature to pass our present oil and gas laws. These statutes not only protected the coal industry but went a long way toward conserving the oil and gas resources of our state. Before drilling for oil or gas on any tract of land, known to be underlaid with one or more workable seams of coal, the well operator is required to submit a map of the area showing the location of the proposed well, and to send a copy to the Dept. of Mines and a copy to the coal operator. If no objections to the location of the proposed well are made by the coal operator within ten days, a drilling permit and a number for the well are then issued and work may proceed. If, however, the location of the proposed well is objected to by the coal operator, on the grounds that the location of the well will interfere with present mine operations, projected workings, or otherwise cause a dangerous condition, the operator may file a written objection with the Dept. of Mines.

From 1990 to 1996, 16 states reported 92 injuries from falls of roof, rib or face in the more than 90 underground stone mines in the United States (Fig.1). Missouri, Pennsylvania and Kentucky accounted for 48% of the total number of injuries (Fig. 2). Of this total, 11 miners were killed. Of the 11 fatalities, 10, or 91%, were associated with unrecognized loose or failed rock within the roof beam. Additionally, unrecognized roof beam failures resulted in a majority of the falls of ground injuries occurring in underground US stone mines from1990 to 1996. This number is not large in magnitude. But a workforce of fewer than 2,000 miners makes for a high fatal-accident rate. The severity of the typical fall-of-ground injury is, in general, very high. About three-fifths of all roof, face and rib fall injuries were designated by the US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) as some kind of lost time accident. MSHA assigns each accident a severity value from one to six. A one represents a fatality, a two, a permanent disability and three, a lost time accident (Fig. 3).

Metal removal kinetics and metal ion selectivity in ion flotation were studied from a thermodynamic perspective. Surface tension data could be used with the Gibbs adsorption equation to quantitatively predict the metal ion removal kinetics in alkylsulfate-Cu systems. However, surface tensions predicted cation selectivity coefficients in the sodium dodecyl-sulfate (SDS)-Cu-Ca and SDS-Cu-Pb systems rather poorly, although the predicted order of the selectivity (Cu2+<Ca2+<Pb2+) was correct. Another thermodynamic selectivity model, which used the Grahame adsorption equation and a geometrical analysis, predicted cation selectivity coefficients that agreed very well with experimentally measured values.

The structural age of the capital mining machinery, representing a part of the system of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia, has been dictated by the initiation and development of open pit coal mines. For example, the oldest bucket wheel excavators were installed some thirty-four years ago, and the average life of the relevant machinery exceeds twenty-two years. Operation of both capital equipment and machinery has direct effects on economic and business activities of open pit mines, and consequently forced us to make a decision and study thoroughly the problem of establishing the optimum exploitation life of capital mining equipment at the open pit coal mines of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia. The aim of this paper is to define and discuss the relative problems as well as to find out the possible solutions and establish the methodology for estimating the optimum exploitation life of machinery. The study was successfully carried out by a team of scientists engaged from and coordinated by the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade. This paper presents the key observations covering the subject problem. The Cresson gold deposit is in the southcentral portion of the Cripple Creek mining district in central Colorado (Fig. 1). The deposit is hosted by a series of 32 Ma (Kelley, 1995) felsic to mafic, alkaline volcanic rocks that were deposited in a diatremal environment. Mineralization in the Cresson deposit is structurally con-trolled. It occurs as disseminated and vein type. Gold deposition is closely associated with potassium-pyrite metasomatism and quartz-telluride vein development(Pontius, 1992). The Cresson deposit is owned by the Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Co. (CC&V), a joint venture between Pikes Peak Mining (67%) and Golden CycleGold (33%).

Everybody has an opinion what the quality of a grinding mill head casting should be, yet extremely few take the time, or get the opportunity, to compare their opinions against fitness-for-purpose data. The real question is not how flawless the casting should/could be, but rather how long will ?this? casting survive in operation. To validate an opinion on this topic one needs either extensive historical data, or comprehensive experimental data, or preferably, a combination of both. The same data can also be used to establish the conservativeness, or lack thereof, of analytical prediction methods.

The depth of underground mines has been increasing due to several factors, such as material demand growth and improving technology. It is a challenge to understand severe failure mechanisms such as spalling, which is caused by induced high stress. To investigate this failure mechanism under high stress conditions, intact rock blocks with small size tunnel were tested at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM). The range of rocks, such as sandstone and granite, were drilled (200 mm hole) and tested using a servo-controlled 450 t capacity INSTRON machine. The acoustic emission sensors were attached to the block mass during the experiment to investigate the seismic response prior to spalling failure. The effect of the ground support system towards the failure was also examined by comparing the seismic response of the various ground support schemes.CITATION:Kusui, A and Villaescusa, E, 2016. Human beings are natural storytellers and story listeners. We learn very early that stories entertain us, but also give us the ?rules? about what is expected of us and how to make meaning of our experiences. Stories are integral to our lives, and have great power to change or influence how we think or how we react. They are an innate part of how we learn, and have obvious benefits to trainers or educators who are trying to impact what and how we learn. This paper and presentation discuss the social and cultural power of stories, and how they have been used to develop training for skilled blue-collar workers. Included will be examples as well as suggestions for trainers on where to find stories, what type of stories to pay attention to, and how to use them to improve occupational safety training.

There are various methods available for the recovery of dimensional stone in open pit quarries. Explosive blasting has more advantages in the economic point of view over the other methods but was not widely used in Korea because owner was concerned about much economic loss when it failed. Several years of efforts have been made in order to develop more effective cutting methods and to spread to the quarries for strengthening the competitiveness in the market. Rock cutting by jet flame and black powder was generally used in the early stage. Black powder was applied to cut the last horizontal plane after forming other vertical planes using the jet flame. Jet flame operation, however, is time consuming and produces excessive noise, and as the result, brings adverse effects on the operator as well as the complaints from the residence adjacent to the quarry. Some mechanical methods such as the slot drill, diamond wire saw or in-situ scale of diamond saw cutting were introduced. Most effective cutting methods using the explosive blasting were developed and applied successfully. Black powder was replaced with the detonating cord. A new air decking technique where plug was not used was developed. This paper reviews the technology for dimensional stone cutting and case study in Korea.

The mechanistic approach to comminution consisting of incorporating particulate breakage functions into a suitable population balance equation has been developed by a number of researchers over the past decade or so. (1) To date this approach has been developed and demonstrated primarily for batch-operated, laboratory or small-scale ball mills. However, since industrial mills are mostly quite large and operated in the continuous mode; suitable population balance models and methods for obtaining the necessary breakage and other model parameters must be developed. This paper describes and investigates a radioisotope tracer technique for this purpose, Population balance models previously developed(2,3) are adapted for this study.

"The rocks of Notre Dame Bay form part of the Central Paleozoic Mobile Belt (Williams, 1964) of the Newfoundland Appalachians. The Central Paleozoic Mobile Belt of the northern part of the island consists predominantly of Lower and Middle Ordovician rocks overlain by Silurian elastic and volcanic sequences and underlain in the marginal zones of the belt by polydeformed metamorphic rocks of the Gander Lake Group (Kennedy and McGonigal, 1972) in the northeast and the Fleur de Lys Supergroup (Neale and Nash, 1963; Kennedy, Phillips and Neale, 1972) in the northwest. The Ordovician rocks of the Central Mobile Belt have been subdivided into a number of local groups in different parts of the region. The Lush's Bight Group was first defined by MacLean (1947) . Recently Marten (1971) has revised the definition of this group, as shown in Table 1 and his revised definition is accepted in the present paper. Plate tectonic models that have been proposed for the development of the Newfoundland Appalachian System have indicated that the mafic volcanic rocks of western Notre Dame Bay represent oceanic crust (Bird and Dewey, 1970; Dewey and Bird, 1971; Church and Stevens, 1970) which marks the remnants of the proto-Atlantic Ocean first proposed by Wilson (1966) . Such models infer that the mafic volcanic rocks constitute the upper part of an ophiolite sequence. Analyses of the lavas show that they are tholeiitic and support this conclusion (Papezik and Fleming, 1967; Smitheringale, 1972) . A complete ophiolite sequence, consisting of peridotites overlain by gabbros, overlain by a sheeted diabase dyke complex which passes upward into pillow lavas, occurs at the base of the Snooks Arm Group (Upadhyay et al., 1971 ) . Sheeted diabase dykes are known to underlie the lowest mafic pillow lavas of the Lush's Bight Group at several localities in Notre Dame Bay (Strong, 1972, and pers. comm.) . However, several conflicting points about the geology of this region suggest that although a typical oceanic crustal sequence of Lower Ordovician age is present, older rocks occur within the ophiolite terrane in several places (Williams, Kennedy and Neale, 1972) ."

Mould powders play an important role in the stability of the continuous casting process. The main functions of mould powders are to provide sufficient lubrication and to control the horizontal heat transfer. Because process control of thin slab casting is more stringent, it is generally assumed that mould powder properties become more critical as well. In 2000, the Direct Sheet Plant at Corus IJmuiden (DSP) was commissioned, incorporating a thin slab caster designed for casting speeds up to 6 m/min. During commissioning, several operational problems with mould powders were encountered i.e. insufficient liquid pool depth and the formation of rims/lumps. To investigate the operational mould powder problems, some of the mould powders were characterized using physical and mineralogical methods. The results were linked to operational experiences. It was concluded that for thin slab casting, a stable slag formation is obtained with a proper choice of free carbon and an even distribution of the carbon particles within the granules. The physical properties of mould powders are not as critical as expected when the additional mineralogical requirements are taken into account. The Front Range portion of the Colorado Mineral Belt is an extensive area of mineralization with mining activity dating from 1859 with the discovery of large gold deposits. After an initial boom period and gradual diminishing production, present activity is restricted to molybdenum in Clear Creek County, uranium in Jefferson County, and several small operations extracting gold and silver in Clear Creek and Gilpin Counties. Gold and silver have dominated the production in the Front Range, though the complex mineralization created milling and smelting problems and it is postulated that considerable amounts of precious metals remain in the mine dumps. This area is plagued by a severe mine drainage problem, with Clear Creek most impacted by many draining mines and tailings in the basin. Boyles et al. Moran and Wentz, Wentz, Wildeman et al., have examined various aspects of the impact of mine drain¬age in the Clear Creek basin. The primary objective of this study was to collect data on the tailings, drainages, and leaching experiments in order to make preliminary suggestions for reducing the impact while recovering metal values to offset treatment costs. A variety of leaching experiments were performed on tailings from the Nevada Gulch area in the Central City mining district. Leachings were performed in vertical tubes indoors and wooden boxes exposed to the outside environment. In the leaching experiments, the leaching solution, grain size, and residence times were varied, while forced aeration was used in some experiments. Bacterial nutrient 9K° and mine drainage were used in some of the experiments. A total of 14 additional tailings samples were analyzed for base and precious metals. The composition of the mine drainage and tailings used in the leaching experiments, as well as data on the additional samples are shown in [Table 1]. Leachate samples were taken periodically for analysis until compositions leveled off. Results and Discussion Leaching with distilled water was used as a control and best illustrates the basic behavior of the leaching process for zinc in a vertical tube [(Fig. 1)]. More acidic leachings increased concentrations of metals as did smaller grain sizes, though the time required increased significantly. Mine drainage with its high concentration of dissolved iron sometimes decreased the heavy-metal concentration in the leachate due to oxidation of Fe 2 and precipitation of Fe(OH)9 which absorbs some of the dissolved heavy metals. In the larger scale experiment carried out in the simulated leaching pad, substantial concentrations of metals were attained in the final leachate after one month. In this experiment the leachate was not recycled, but allowed to saturate the tailings continually with evaporation loss made up by additions of Quartz Hill drainage and nutrient 9K. The concentration of the metals in the leachate and the increase over the input solution are given in [Table 2]. Heap leaching of low-grade copper and uranium ores is successfully carried out in many districts, enhanced by the metabolism of autotrophic bacteria of the Thiobacillus-Ferrobacillus group. These ubiquitous organisms enhance metal leaching, and general aspects of heap leaching are discussed by Malouf, Trudinger, Pings, and Duncan et al. Conclusions and Recommendations Returning to the primary objective, how to reduce the mine drainage impact and recover metal values, we need to consider how the data may suggest avenues toward this objective. The extraction of rare earth oxides from fluoroapatite rich phosphate concentrates often involves a weak acid leach of fluoroapatite and a sulphuric acid bake of the leach residue followed by water leach and precipitation to obtain an intermediate product. The main aim of this study was to determine and rationalize the solubility of rare earth metal ions in synthetic solutions representing various process liquors at the temperatures 40, 60 and 80oC. The liquors contained different acid and metal ion concentrations with respect to sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid and sulphate salts of sodium, magnesium, aluminium, potassium, calcium and iron(III). A solid of mixed rare earth carbonates was used as the source of rare earth metal ions. The solubility tests and characterization of solids using XRD were conducted at Murdoch University laboratories as part of the process development for the Arafura Resources Nolans rare earth project. The composition of initial carbonate solids and the solids and solutions formed after saturation were analysed for rare earth and other elements at TSW Analytical Laboratories in Perth using ICP-MS and ICP-OES. The precipitated solid in sodium-rich acidic sulphate solutions is the double salt NaRE(SO4)2 based on the solid assays. However, in acidic solutions free of sodium or of low concentrations of sodium the precipitated solid appears to be RE2(SO4)3.
