In response to concerns voiced by local, state, and federal agencies and various environmental groups, the Central Florida Phosphate Industry and various governmental agencies have been investigating methods to accelerate the consolidation of waste clays generated during phosphate washing and beneficiation processes. The objectives of research efforts have been to reduce the storage volumes required for clay waste, accelerate reclamation and to return the land to approximate pre-mining topography. Government and industry research to accelerate waste clay consolidation has evolved two general methods: gravity thickening and chemical flocculation. Gardinier, Inc. one of the phosphate mining companies, evaluated the use of synthetic (polyacrylamide) flocculants as an alternate waste clay thickening method in response to mining conditions encountered at their Fort Meade Mine and the proposed North Hardee County extension of the Fort Meade mine (Figure 1). After considerable research and evaluation, the Alsthom-Atlantic Clariflux Super-flocculation method was chosen by Gardinier, Inc. as a method to seriously consider for use at their Fort Meade mine.

"Gas dispersion in flotation defines the efficiency of the process once the chemistry has been established. There are three measurements, superficial gas velocity, gas holdup, and bubble size, which along with the derived quantity bubble surface area flux, are used to define “gas dispersion.” Sensors for measuring gas dispersion in industrial machines have been developed. This communication describes the working principle of the techniques and illustrates their potential to detect problems and to improve the operation of individual cells, banks and circuits. IntroductionFlotation is the most widely used process to separate minerals and is finding increasing application in other chemical and environmental fields. The process exploits natural and induced hydrophobicity to collect selected particles on the surface of a bubble. Once the process chemistry to control hydrophobicity has been established, the efficiency depends on dispersion of air to generate the necessary bubble surface area. Bubble surface area flux, Sb, the interfacial area generated per unit time and unit area of the machine, is emerging as one of the most useful variables to quantify gas dispersion (Gorain et al., 1997, 1998) although not without its critics (Heiskenan et al., 2001).For a bubble population of mean size db at a superficial gas velocity (or rate) Jg, the bubble surface area flux can be derived from geometric considerations (Finch et al., 1999):"

Single-phase aluminum containing 0.0001 to 0.06 pct Cu was studied in strong acid, mainly through observations of hydrogen evolution. The strong influence of copper was exerted almost entirely through the imposition after a certain delay time of an auto-catalytic localized-corrosiott reaction. Additions of cupric ion to the acid produced lower accelerations. The significance of the quantity and distribution of copper was discussed, and the implications for intergranular corrosion and neutral chloride pitting were indicated. AN investigation of intergranular corrosion in single-phase high purity aluminum exposed to hydrochloric acid indicated the copper content of the metal to have an influence on corrosion at lower levels than previously suspected.&apos; The work reported here was a closer examination of the action of copper but dealt with general corrosion to gain the advantage of having a continuous measure of corrosion through the volume of hydrogen evolved, the reduction of hydrogen ion to hydrogen gas being the principal or only cathode reaction in strong hydrochloric acid. Previous work on the hydrochloric acid corrosion of aluminum was sometimes insufficiently structure-conscious and the need for care in evaluating it arises from the low solubility of the iron impurity,&apos; and of some alloying elements, and the known or possible presence in many of the compositions studied of second phases leading to greatly increased corrosion rates.3 These increases are attributed to the presence of low hydrogen-overvoltage cathodes provided by the second phase.3&apos;4 For the present single-phase work, a few studies which used high-purity base material and small copper additions5-&apos; provide the essential information most unambiguously. The corrosion rate was shown to be increased markedly by the introduction into the acid of small quantities of the ions of copper (and of certain other metals) which cement on the aluminum and provide cathodes of low overvoltage.5 When there was sufficient copper in the aluminum, the same result was produced during the course of corrosion leading to a rate which increased with time as the reaction was stimulated by one of its products (autocatalytic reaction). In 2N (7pct) HC1, an accelerating rate was observed at 0.1 pct Cu but not at 0.01 pct.5,7 The present work dealt with corrosion rate and morphology and their correlation with the quantity and distribution of copper catalyst for copper contents from 0.0001 to 0.06 pct. PROCEDURE A lot of high-purity aluminum containing 0.0021 pct Cu, 0.001 pct Fe and 0.003 pct Si (Alloy A) was alloyed with copper to yield aluminum containing 0.014 pct Cu (B) and 0.06 pct Cu (C). Later it was found necessary to include the lower copper Alloy K which contained 0.0001 pct Cu, 0.0004 pct Fe and 0.0004 pct Si. The upper limit for any other element can be confidently estimated as 0.0005 pct. No element other than copper appears to be present in quantities sufficient to have an effect on general corrosion as great as the observed effect of the copper in A, B, and C. The only other heavy metal detected by spectrographic examination was silver (< 0.0001 pct). The acid was made up from a selected lot of 37 1/2 pct CP hydrochloric acid containing 0.1 ppm heavy metals (mainly Pb), 0.05 ppm Fe, and < 0.008 ppm As and from water distilled from 1 megohm-cm demineralized water and believed to have contained negligible quantities of heavy metals influencing corrosion. Acid strength was adjusted to within 0.05 pct HCl of the stated value by using precision specific gravity measurements. Test blanks 10 by 41 mm were sheared from 1.65-mm cold-rolled sheet. Edges were finished by filing. The blanks were annealed in air at 645°C for 24 hr in alundum boats and rapidly water quenched. The anneal is thought to have produced a substantially homogeneous solid solution—for iron, copper, or silicon, for example, the annealing temperature was 200°C or more above the solvus-and the quench is considered to have preserved the high-temperature structure except for the condensation of lattice vacancies into dislocation loops.&apos; The 0.06 pct Cu alloy did not appear unstable in respect to slow precipitation reactions at room temperature since two pairs of tests failed to show significant differences between specimens heat treated 3 1/2 years earlier and specimens heat treated 1 or 2 days before.

The chloridizing roasting of ores is applied when metal sulfides and oxides are to be converted into soluble or volatile compounds. The chlorine required is either obtained from the admixed chlorides of sodium or calcium or added in the gaseous state. In the first part of the investigations the reaction rate of the chlorides of sodium or calcium with gas mixtures of SO,-0, or SO ,-O2 ,-SO , was measured. The rate for reactions with gas mixtures SO2-O2 is ThE chloridizing roasting of ores is applied when metal sulfides and oxides are to be converted into soluble or volatile compounds. At present the process is mainly applied to produce nonferrous metals which occur in pyrite cinders in small concentrations. Thereby the nonferrous metals are converted into water-soluble, acid-soluble, or volatile compounds whereas all the iron remains as insoluble oxide. The chlorine required is either obtained from the admixed chlorides of sodium or calcium or added in the gaseous state. The reactions occurring during the roasting process can be divided into two groups: solid-solid reaction and gas-solid reaction. The reactions between solids proceed by means of solid-state diffusion and are therefore of low velocity. The heterogeneous reactions between solids and gases of the roasting atmosphere5 are high-velocity processes and determine the velocity of the chloridizing roasting. These gas-solid reactions shall be the subject of the paper presented. In order to investigate the still little-known processes which occur during the chloridizing roasting 6-&apos; the complex reaction is split into several partial steps. First the reactions of NaCl and CaCl, with gas mixtures of SO2 and 0, have been investigated at temperatures between 500" and 600°C by measuring the weight increase of the samples. The gas mixtures used in this series of experiments had first variable compositions, then the amount of SO 2 had been increased. Furthermore the influence of Fe 2 O3 admixtures upon these reactions, the behavior of pure Fe 2 O3 with the gaseous reactants, and the chlorination of the sulfides of lead, copper, nickel, and zinc have been investigated. FORMATION OF GASEOUS CHLORINE Pyrite cinders are never completely roasted and therefore contain still a small amount of sulfide sulfur. When heated again in air, this sulfur is converted into SO,. Accordingly the formation of chlorine can first be described by the reactions: dependent on the composition of the gas phase. If more than 1 pct SO 3 is added to the roasting gas, the reaction rate is determined only by the concentrations of the SO,. In the second part the reactions between chlorine and metal sulfides are discussed. The rate of formation of gaseous chlorine is higher by me order of magnitude than is the reaction rate between ZnS and chlorine. The reaction rate of NiS and PbS lies considerably below that of ZnS. The conversion rate of both pure Fe 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 containing NaCl or CaCl2 when reacting with SO2-O2, mixtures with and without SO3 portions was measured at temperatures of 500", 550°, and 600°C. The weight increase of pressings was determined by means of a spiral balanceg and the reaction rate calculated therefrom according to Eqs. [ll to [31 and [5] to [7]. The prepared samples were suspended on a platinum filament in a vertically mounted tube of mullite (ID 4 cm, length 110 cm) which could be heated by a resistance tube furnace. The platinum filament was tied to the lower end of the spiral balance. A supremax glass tube (length 70 cm) was mounted gas-tight on top of the reaction tube. The unit was sealed up at its top by a ground-in stopper which was holding the spiral balance with the sample. The spiral balance therefore hung outside the high-temperature region of the furnace. Fig. 2 shows the experimental arrangement schematically. While lowering the sample into the reaction tube pure nitrogen was flowing through the reaction zone providing a protective atmosphere. After the sample had reached the reaction temperature within approximately 1 min, the protective gas was replaced by the sulfur dioxide-oxygen reaction mixture. In several of the States of Australia, mining on private property has been seriously hampered by the fact that large areas of land have been alienated from the Crown before the discovery of gold or other minerals. In Western Australia this difficultyhas only occurred to a small extent, and has largely been overcome by an act entituled &quot;An Act to Permit Mining on Private Property, No. XXIX., &apos;October, 28th, 1898.&quot; Under this act, the holder of a miner&apos;s right can apply for a gold mining lease on private land; such applicant may treat privately with the owner of such land as to the amount of compensation to be paid for surface ,damage, or the case may be brought before the Warden who will assess the damages. IN 1938 the Republic Steel Corp. announced that it had leased the ore mines and other property of the Witherbee Sherman Corp. at Port Henry, N. Y. The announcement brought forth an interesting reaction. Two questions were asked repeatedly: (1) Is the iron product high grade? (2) Is there a substantial reserve? The answer to both questions was and is a decided and emphatic "Yes."

"Due to the high reactivity of sulfide minerals in alkaline cyanide solutions, some parasitic reactions inflict a heavy gold surface passivation and excess cyanide consumption resulting in a dramatic decrease of the gold leaching rate. Atmospheric pre-oxidation was shown to be an effective tool to enhance gold extraction by preventing a passive film from forming on the surface of gold grains. This work aims to highlight efforts undertaken to determine: (1) how gold cyanidation is limited by passivation; (2) what are the reactions and mechanisms involved during gold cyanidation; and (3) how a better understanding of fundamental issues can be used to design a proper pre-oxidation strategy. INTRODUCTION Precious metals (PM), gold in particular, naturally occur in contact within a wide range of sulfide mineral systems. Hence, one of today’s most challenging R&D tasks consists in accounting for the presence of sulfides on the cyanidation behavior of gold. An important body of knowledge reveals that metal sulfides display a range of reactivities in alkaline cyanide solutions (Marsden & House, 2006). Such reactivities are acknowledged to inflict additional utility costs and loss of profits because they are accompanied with higher consumption of cyanide and/or formation of undesirable by-products that are often detrimental to gold leaching rates. Gold recovery in cyanidation is hampered by a multitude of factors, among others: (1) consumption of excess cyanide as a result of the formation of thiocyanate and dissolution of transition (Cu, Fe, Zn, etc.) metals (Habashi, 1967); (2) gold surface passivation by solid reaction products, e.g., Fe(OH)3 (Guo, Deschenes, Pratt, Fulton & Lastra, 2005), sulfur (Dai & Jeffrey, 2006; Jeffrey & Breuer, 2000;) or oxo and thiooxo (SbO33- SbS33-) salts in alkaline solutions (Guo et al., 2005). Because of their energy structure, most of the sulfide minerals exhibit semiconductor properties (Marsden & House, 2006). Therefore, the contact between constitutive sulfide minerals inside complex sulfurous ores entrains electrochemical phenomena in which sulfide dissolution is a genuine corrosion process (Azizi, Petre, Olsen & Larachi, 2010). For instance, galvanic interactions could be initiated between the various constituents within the ore and could substantially increase or decrease the reactivity of some of the associated minerals."

Methods for reducing the cyclic nature of drill and blast tunneling operations have been long needed. A miniature blasting system using 10 mm (.375 in.) holes, 0.91 m (36 in.) deep, and blasting only one hole at a time makes it practical for men to work behind a shield, remaining at the face during the entire process. A prototype automated module was developed to drill, load the hole and initiate the detonation without moving from the hole. A unique cost effective gell explosive and a novel, low cost initiation method were developed.

"El presente trabajo señala el proceso de evolución del método de minado en la mina Chupa, perteneciente a la unidad minera de Iscaycruz. La evolución del método de minado se determinó por la búsqueda de mejores condiciones de seguridad y eficiencia en la operación. En ese sentido, los resultados logrados con cada una de las alternativas de minado por subniveles, indica que se ha logrado optimizar las diferentes variables mineras y cumplir con el plan estratégico de Empresa Minera Iscaycruz S.A. (EMISA). Para cumplir con el citado plan estratégico, se debe optimizar el método de minado de Chupa, a través de una mayor producción a un menor costo,así como del aprovecho de las labores de desarrollo y preparación ejecutadas según el planeamiento inicial del minado. Por ello, la secuencia del avance del minado y la reestructuración del sistema de relleno de la mina son los aspectos importantes para lograr este objetivo. "

The southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (SMAR) is one of the least-explored spreading centers in the world with respect to hydrothermal activity. In the past 8 years research focused mainly on the ridge segments close to Ascension Island, discovering hydrothermal fields as far south as 14°20?S (Haase et al., 2007; German et al., 2008; Tao et al., 2011). However, the vast majority of the SMAR ridge axis has never been thoroughly investigated for hydrothermal activity. In the spring of 2013 we used segment-scale AUV deployments as well as conventional CTD surveys to identify areas of hydrothermal activity along 16 mid-ocean ridge segments between 13° and 33°S, thereby covering close to 5 % of the global ridge axis in a single cruise. During cruise MSM25 of the German research vessel Maria S. Merian, we tested longrange (>100 km lines per dive) AUV deployments of GEOMAR?s AUV ABYSS (a Remus 6000 vehicle) along the spreading axis for their capability to locate active venting in a fast and efficient way on regional surveys. ACCELERATED programs, as discussed in this paper, refer to the year-around operation of a college or university with three sixteen-week or four twelve-week terms per year, with pauses between sufficient only to allow the administrative group to perform their functions. In most engineering schools, under such conditions, the conventional four-year course can be condensed to two years and eight months. These accelerated programs of study, which now exist in most of our technical institutions, were forced upon us under the influence of the outburst of wartime patriotism, perhaps one might go so far as to call it hysteria. Many of us felt and hoped that these programs were temporary expedients, but the cold hard threat of permanency now rears its head; consequently we should examine the merits and shortcomings of the new order, and evaluate its effect on our educational system, since it may persist in some form in the postwar years, because of the changing political and financial situation. Milling circuits are known to be difficult to control. In order to address these difficulties, it was decided to develop and test a model predictive controller (MPC) for a milling circuit. A milling simulator was written using Microsoft Visual C++ and used to design and test the MPC controller. Due to the large number of tuning parameters in a controller of this type, an optimizing algorithm was written that automatically tunes the controller. Good, robust control was obtained when the controller was tuned using this algorithm. Control was further improved by combining feedback and feed forward control and by using quadratic programming in the MPC algorithm. The movement of the manipulated variables was reduced by using a novel technique that allows the controlled variable to vary within a specified region around the set point. An optimiser controller was also successfully implemented to control the circuit at its maximum throughput.

De Beers? Finsch diamond mine began operation in the 1960s as a surface project using the latest technology available. During the 1990s, the operation, located about 160 km (100 miles) west of Kimberley, South Africa, began its move as an underground mine. The earlier stages (Blocks 1, 2 and 3) of underground work at Finsch used open stope mining methods, also using the latest in technology. The mine began developing Block 4 in 2004. How-ever, studies on this level showed that block caving was a more efficient mining method than open stoping. It was during those studies that De Beers determined that Block 4 would be a good candidate for testing Sandvik?s automated truck haulage technology.

The purpose of the mill tests reported herein, was to determine the relative power efficiency of fast and slow rod mill speeds on the ores of the Tennessee Copper Co. The tests were carried out at the lsabella Mill of the Tennessee Copper Co. under normal operating conditions. Every effort was made to keep the ore supply and other conditions constant, but it will be noted that some slight variation did occur. The open circuit 6 by 9 rod mill, and ore, used in these tests have been previously described.&apos; Four motor drive pinions were available and the tests were performed in the following manner: each pinion was used to drive the mill for a period of one week. Constant sampling prevailed during the test run, and a composite sample for each speed test was made. Realizing that some slight liner wear took place during the four-week test-run, and that some slight variation of the ore may have taken place, a second and then a third series of four-week test- runs were made with the four different pinions. The screen analysis of each of the thee-week run samples at the various speeds were composited and the results are shown in Table 1. The authors feel that the 12 weeks of operation consumed during these test-runs would represent fairly the effect of each mill speed. The data of line 37 show that within the error of sampling and plant operation, the tons of minus 65-mesh material generated per horsepower hour was the same at all four speeds.

The adsorption of Cu2+ ions by Penicillium sp. displayed a dual rate, with an initial faster phase followed by a slower one. The adsorption rate increased with increasing pH due to chemical and biochemical reactions. The Cu-loading capacity of the biomass increased at higher initial Cu2+ concentrations. Above 40 degrees C the adsorption rate decreased which may be due to partial hydrolysis of biopolymers which are essential constituents of the cell wall. Adsorption kinetics followed the Freundlich isotherm and the equilibrium concentration that was calculated on the basis of the isotherm matched the observed value well. A series of theoretical adsorption curves were produced using mathematical correlations between the mass transfer coefficient, the Cu2+ ion concentration at equilibrium and at time t. The correlation between the theoretical and observed adsorption rates for different experimental conditions was good. It was concluded that the results from the study were best explained using a mass-transfer adsorption model

The formation and growth of Guinier-Preston zones in Al-Zn alloys containing 4.4, 6.8, 9.7, and 12.4 at. pct zn have been studied by the X-ray small-angle scattering method. Particular attention was paid to the effects of small amounts of third elements silver, silicon, and magnesium on the formation and growth of G.P. zones. It was noticed that an appreciable number of G.P. zones were formed during the course of rapid cooling and that the size, volume fraction, and number of these G.P. zones were influenced by the existence of the third elements. During subsequent aging it was also found that the addition of both silver and silicon lowered the temperature for the growth of G.P. zones, whereas the addition of magnesium raised it. These results were explained in terms of the mutual interactions among zinc atoms, vacancies, and the third elements. A number of studies on the formation and growth of Guinier-Preston zones in Al-Zn alloys have been reported.1-4 Panseri and Federighii have found that the initial stages of zone growth take place at temperatures as low as around -100°C. For investigation of the mechanism of the initial stages of zone growth, growth studies must be carried out at low temperatures. In order to investigate the possibility of the formation of G.P. zones by the nucleation mechanism or the spinodal decomposition during quenching which was reported by Rundman and Hilliard,5 the examination of the as-quenched structure must be performed. In this paper the investigation of the early stages of the formation and growth were determined by means of the X-ray small-angle scattering method. With this technique, change of X-ray scattering intensities was measured while quenched specimens were heated slowly from liquid-nitrogen temperature to room temperature. At as-quenched state and after heated to room temperature, investigation of zone size, volume fraction, and zone number per unit volume was carried out. Measurements on these specimens yielded information on the early stages of zone formation and growth. Measurements were made also on specimens quenched to and aged at room temperature. From these measurements the previously reported model6 for the later stages of growth is confirmed; namely, the larger zones grow at the expense of smaller ones. Three elements, silver, silicon, and magnesium, were chosen as the third elements for the following reasons: Silver. In the binary A1-Ag alloy the spherical disordered 77&apos; zones were observed immediately after quenching.7 Therefore, in the Al-Zn-Ag alloys, it is suggested that silver atoms might induce cluster formation during quenching. Also, since the migration energy of the zinc atoms was found to be raised by the addition of silver atoms,&apos; silver atoms may have a great effect of the zinc diffusion, especially during low-temperature agings. Silicon. The effects of the addition of silicon atoms were found to be marked, especially at low-tempera-ture aging. In the binary Zn-Si system, no mutual solid solubilities between silicon and zinc9 and no in-termetallic compounds10 are reported to exist. Shashkov and Buynov11 investigated the behavior of silicon atoms in Al-Zn alloys and showed that silicon was not in the G.P. zones. The interaction between silicon atoms and vacancies is strong enough to increase the quenched-in vacancy concentration.* Magnesium. Magnesium atoms are reported to trap quenched-in vacancies and after much longer aging times these trapped vacancies will become free and act as diffusion carriers.13 Therefore at intermediate aging times, the diffusion of zinc atoms in Al-Zn-Mg alloys will be slower than in the binary Al-Zn alloys, whereas at longer times zinc diffusion will become faster. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation had compositions of 4.4, 6.8, 9.7, and 12.4 at. pct Zn with or without 0.1 and 0.5 at. pct Ag, Si, or Mg. The alloys were prepared from high-purity aluminum, zinc, silver, silicon, and magnesium, with each metal having a purity better than 99.99 pct. The analyzed composition of the specimens is given in Table I. The measurements of the X-ray small-angle scattering were carried out with foils of 0.20 mm thick. The change of the scattering intensity was always measured at the fixed scattering angle of 20 = 2/3 deg. This angle exists nearly on the position of the intensity maximum. The value of the interparticle interference function14 which has large effect in this range of angles may not change abruptly in the case of the spherical shape of small zones. Therefore, from the above considerations, it is concluded that an increase of the intensity measured at this constant angle corresponds to an increase of the average radius and volume fraction of G.P. zones. Gallium compounds, mainly GaAs, are used in medicine, to manufacture optoelectronic devices, microwave techniques, devices of solar power and infrared optics, etc. The basic gallium industrial deposits are known only on land. There are bauxites (50 ppm), nepheline rocks and ores (36-38 ppm, minerals concentrators are nepheline and sodalite), Zn-Pb-Cu ores (5000-12000 ppm, minerals concentrators are gallite, germanite, sphalerite, bornite), sulphide-polymetallic and Pb-Zn ores (10-32 ppm, minerals concentrators sphalerite, chalcopyrite) (Vershkovskya et al., 1998). High concentration of gallium are observed in hydrothermal massive sulphides of a Mid-Okinawa Trough (The South Chinese Sea) and Sujo seamount (The Philippine Sea) (Noguchi et al., 2007). As it is known, deep-sea massive sulphides and associated Fe-Mn crusts are products of hydrothermal fluid discharge. High-temperature massive sulphides precipitation are the first, and low-temperature Fe-Mn crusts deposition is the last process of hydrothermal mineralization (Cronan, 1982). Hydrogenic crusts and nodules of the World ocean are characterized by low concentration of Ga, close to clarke (19 ppm) (Kobaltbogatye.., 2002). Hydrogenic crusts from the Sea of Okhotsk are exception, because Ga concentrations are exceeded clarke in 3,5 times (Mikhailik, et al., 2009). Complex studying of Fe-Mn crusts from deep-sea basins volcanic seamounts of the Sea of Japan has shown their hydrothermal-sedimentary genesis (Mikhailik, 2009). High gallium concentration (up to 850 ppm) was established in these crusts by ICP-MS (Agilent 7500C). Microprobe research (JXA-8100) of samples Fe-Mn crusts has not revealed the gallium minerals concentrators. It suggests that, gallium in Fe-Mn crusts of the Sea of Japan is sorb substance.

River Des Peres Foul water Interceptor (Skinker–McCausland Tunnel) is a gravity sewer tunnel constructed to eliminate dry sewage overflows during high river stages and to improve the wastewater collection and treatment. The original 78-inch (2m)finished diameter Skinker-McCausland Tunnel started as a 21,500 feet (6.5km)interceptor with 13 work, drop and access shafts. The tunnel constructions included soft ground, mixed face and rock tunneling in karst formation with maximum overburden of 175 feet (53m). Due to the success of the project, the tunnel alignment was extended another13,361 feet (4.1 km) and 7 new structures by negotiating two additional segments with the contractor and the designers.
