Organization of the company stemmed from the consolidation of three important properties in the Birmingham District and a by-product coke plant at Tarrant, Ala. In 1924 ABC was merged with the Pratt Consolidated Coal Co. This merger greatly extended the company's holdings of valuable coal lands in Walker and Jefferson Counties.

Given the global scarcity and value of potable water, interest in the use of water of lower quality in mineral processing has grown significantly in recent years. Previous laboratory batch flotation tests conducted at CSIRO have shown that chalcopyrite floats strongly without collector in distilled water and that the collectorless flotability of chalcopyrite is unaffected by the use of brackish water, sea water or hypersaline water. In contrast, bornite is moderately flotable without collector in distilled water but all three lower-quality waters have a detrimental effect on the recovery of bornite. The depressant effect is so strong that the little recovery achieved in these waters was only slightly above what might have been expected from entrainment alone. This work has now been extended to another important copper sulfide mineral, chalcocite. In contrast to chalcopyrite and bornite, chalcocite does not exhibit collectorless flotability so the chalcocite tests in this study were performed in the presence of a standard collector (potassium ethyl xanthate). The results reveal that chalcocite is flotable with xanthate in distilled water but the lower-quality waters have a detrimental effect on the recovery of chalcocite. This effect is partly reversed by increase collector additions. Further tests were completed in order to investigate the effect of the different ions present in the saline waters on chalcocite flotation. Possible reasons for the observed differences are discussed in terms of the pulp chemistry of the system.

La Oroya zinc ferrite (19.5% Zn, 26.6% Fe, 0.052% Ga, 0.075% In) was roasted with coal under conditions more oxidizing than normally used in a Waelz kiln, and the roasted residues were leached with 200 g/L H2SO4. Overall zinc recoveries of up to 97% were achieved, with 35% of the zinc reporting to the fume after roasting at 1,100°C with a bituminous coal addition of 20%. Under these conditions, 93.2% of the Cd, 13.4% of the Cu, 33% of the Ga, 61% of the In and 18.2% of the Pb were recovered either in the fume or in the leach solution. At 2006 metal prices, the value of the recovered metals is comparable to that obtained from commercial Waelz kiln processing of this residue. Zinc in the franklinite (ZnFe2O4) mineral is reduced to zinc vapor, and, after oxidation, some of the zinc is found as ZnO or as Zn2SiO4 in the roasted residue. Iron reacts to form either hematite (Fe2O3) or magnetite (Fe3O4), with no metallic iron detected in the roasted residue, and less than 2% of the iron is solubilized during leaching. The residue produced after roasting and leaching is, therefore, much more stable than the residue from Waelz kiln processing and should be suitable for disposal in a landfill.

In 1955 the Federal Bureau of Mines established a low-temperature tar laboratory at its new Appalachian Experiment Station in Morgantown, W. Va. The objective of the laboratory is to investigate the yields and chemical and physical properties of tars from low-temperature carbonization of coal, to investigate means of economically upgrading these tars, and to make available to industry and the public essential data for increasing coal utilization through the establishment of a new coal-chemical industry, based on the utilization of low-temperature tars. Because of the obvious economic significance of phenols, as well as the relative ease with which they can be separated and analyzed, initial research has centered mainly around this class of tar constituents. It was realized early that no listing of phenols and their physical properties existed that included enough compounds to be practicable. The purpose of this paper is to make such a compilation available.

A line of cordeau detonating fuse was placed in hole No. 2, no electric detonators being used in the hole. After 12 or 13 cases of 40 per cent nitro starch powder had been poured into the hole in loose form, it was found that a space of only 17 ft. remained for stemming. It was decided that space for an additional case of powder might be obtained by tamping the charge. The tamping was done with a heavy plunger, about 3 or 3 inches in diameter and 10 inches long, made of lead with an iron core with an iron eye in the top to which a 3/4 inch rope was attached, and weighing between 30 and 40 pounds. This weight was intended for use in sinking explosive in wet holes, and not for tamping. It is estimated that the tamping had continued at least 10 The quarry superintendent had gone a considerable distance for a box of powder, returned, and reached a point about 10 feet from the hole, minutes.

Increasing attention is being paid to laterite nickel ore as an alternative to nickel sulfide ore to act as a feedstock for nickel metal production. While laterite nickel ore accounts for a lion’s share of global nickel resources at approximately 72 percent, it accounts for only 42 percent of the world’s nickel production. In addition, the processing of nickel sulfide ore is confronted with enormous challenges due to deeper drilling requirements, higher production costs and depleting reserves. The nickel content in the nickel laterite ore associated with hydrated iron oxides and silicate minerals limits the application of physical beneficiation methods for the removal of iron. Thus, magnetic reduction roasting followed by magnetic separation has been regarded as one of the attractive routes to concentrate and separate the valuable metals from the impurities.

"This paper will describe how cultivator shanks are made in one company and how the manufacturing was studied with a view to increasing product consistency and reducing manufacturing cost. The product: which is used extensively in the agriculture industry, was analyzed to determine which geometric parameters optimized its design and whether there was justification for the great variety of styles and shapes that are available in the market. Finally, an extensive series of field trials were undertaken which showed that it is advantageous to the manufacturer to be better aware of the loads and forces that his product is subjected to by another industry.IntroductionStelco maintains a Research Group for its Western Region operations headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta. Because of the small staff, a location that is isolated with respect to its Burlington, Ontario centre and a diverse set of processes and products, a university relationship has developed which may be different from that which would be developed at a larger integrated Steel Works. This paper outlines the type of cooperative studies carried out by Stelco Inc. in Edmonton and the University of Alberta. .To meet the research needs covering a wide variety of steelmaking processes and steel products produced in Edmonton would require more staff and equipment than the sales volume in the West justifies. The gap is filled by cooperation with university personnel. This cooperation has provided these benefits to Stelco Inc.:• access to specialized test equipment and a trained staff to operate it; and• assistance from experts in the areas of product testing and problem solving.Moreover, the close proximity of the university to the plant allows frequent meetings and ensures that practical solutions are developed and implemented. A good example of the ongoing university I industry relationship developed is the joint work on improving cultivator shanks."

The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 establishes a nation-wide program requiring the Secretary of the Interior, through the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, and the States to protect against the adverse effects of coal mining and to reclaim previously mined lands left without adequate reclamation. The Act requires coal mine operators to: restore the land to approximate original contour, return the land to a condition capable of supporting prior potential uses, protect the hydrologic balance, segregate and restore topsoil, control blasting to prevent damage and injury, establish vegetative cover, and control surface effects of underground mining. The Act also establishes: a reclamation fee on coal, a program to assist small operators, a program to give technical and financial assistance to State programs, State Mining and Mineral Research Institutes., a program for designating areas as unsuitable for mining, and a study on surface mining of minerals other than coal.

Over the past few years the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory's staff designed, built, tested and proved the necessary hardware, software and methodology of tracer gas based surveying techniques applied in the field of mine ventilation. These methods are now used routinely in a variety of applications where traditional anemometric methods do not provide the required accuracies or cannot be effectively employed. Irregular or highly turbulent flows, leakages, geometrically complicated or highly obstructed airways are just a few examples where traditional anemometry can produce unacceptable errors in calculated ventilation parameters. Tracer gas based ventilation techniques have been used in many problematic situations where the standard ventilation methods are inadequate. One such problem, faced by many mine operators, is the emergency imposed by the ever present threat of a mine fire. An understanding of the propagation of smoke contaminants and the demonstrated integrity of appointed escape routes can save lives and property during a fire. That knowledge can be gained quickly and inexpensively by the application of tracer gas smoke simulation methods. The concept of controlled air recirculation has recently gained considerable attention in the mining industry. While mathematical models can be used to predict performance, the ultimate proof of a ventilation system's performance can best be provided by a tracer gas based simulation of contaminant levels. Fan performance tests and assessment of auxiliary ventilation systems are highly dependent on accurate definition of airflows; precise data can be easily obtained by tracer gas based volumetric surveys. (communication to the Secretary*).-In order to set at rest any doubts in regard to the reasons for selecting the Callow pneumatic flotation process for use in the concentrators of the Arizona Copper Co., Ltd., at Clifton and Morenci, I am presenting the following facts gained from the results of test work carried out on the Callow and Cole-Bergman types of flotation machines at Morenci. Prior to the comparative test of merit between the Callow and Cole-Bergman machines, many months' time and a large amount of money had been expended in the development and testing of the Cole-Bergman machine, and it was necessary to decide quickly what make of machine was best to install. The Callow pneumatic flotation process was recommended for installation in our concentrators for the following reasons: The results indicated: 1. That the Callow system made the highest extraction of copper values from the feed treated. 2. That the Callow system was simpler to operate and could he operated it a lower cost. 3. That the Callow system operated with a lower air pressure. (The question of the actual power consumption of the two types of machines was not definitely settled at this time.) During the official test period the Callow flotation apparatus showed an additional recovery of from 1 to 1.5 lb. of copper per ton more than the Cole-Bergman machine, this difference being maintained by further treatment of the tailing from both machines. The simplicity of the operation of the Callow flotation system is one of its notable features, two operators per shift being able to handle 90 standard cells and blower equipment.

The a ad on Connection" For the purpose of this paper, we will concentrate on the ubquitous radon gas as the principle, low-level radiation effect from uranium tailings piles. Standards are also proposed for gamma radiations but, by most accounts, this is much less of a low level problem than is radon. I am also aware of some just completed research at Oak Ridge National Laboratories that suggest polonium may be a major concern in tailings, but those data are preliminary at this time. What is radon gas? In the first place it is not a gas in the accepted sense in that it has no driving pressure head. It might prove a more convenient description to call it radon vapor. Radon vapor, then, is 7-1/2 times heavier than air. Radiologically, it is an alpha emitter which means it spontaneously gives off high ionizing potential but low penetrating power particles. In fact, the alpha particle has such low penetrating power that this sheet of paper will completely shield a person. The problem, though, is breathing the radon decay products, called radon daughters. If radon daughter products are ingested into the lungs, their alpha emissions may cause cancer. The principle carcinoma associated with breathing radon, or more basically, associated with radiological effects is oat cell car- cinoma of the undifferentiated mall cell type. Radon has a 3.8 day half life which means in less than four days half of its initial radioactivity has decayed away. In less than a month it essentially becomes inert or non-radioactive. To develop and design a bit that will rapidly drill smooth and precise instrumentation holes in soft rock. Approach Use a one-piece bit made by combining a drag bit and a diamond bit. Because a smooth-walled borehole with a precise diameter is needed for borehole pressure cells (BPC) and other borehole instruments, a diamond bit is usually used. However, diamond bit drilling is slow, and the bit will tend to bind when squeezing ground is encountered. On the other hand, the drag bit will cut faster, but the walls of the drill hole will be rough and the diameter will not be as precise. The combination will provide a bit which penetrates as rapidly as a drag bit, but retains the smooth-wall and precise borehole diameter of a diamond bit. How It Works A three-foot-length of EW-size drill rod is centered in a diamond bit by welding it to three equally-positioned spacers at each end of the bit. A drag bit is attached to the EW rod with a standard EW-to-drag bit adapter as shown in the diagram. Three equally-spaced diamond inserts are set to the desired hole size and welded to the diamond bit barrel behind the crown. These inserts increase the smoothness and precision of the hole by cut-ting away any hole closure. Three equally-spaced shims are set approximately 0.020-inch under the overall insert diameter size and welded to the rear of the diamond bit barrel. The combination bit should be used on a diamond drill with either water, mist or air as the coolant.

An underground excavation project usually is a highly organized complex of different but interrelated construction activities. It is the whole effort, including the necessary tools, which will be referred to as the System. Tunnel-driving and shaft-sinking operations are among the most systematic of construction efforts. Systems are not new in the performance of construction. It is the Systems Concept which seems only recently to have been discovered and made the subject of much study and discussion. HISTORICAL From the seventeenth century, when explosives were first utilized for rock excavation, until the successful application of the rotary-head continuous tunneler in this decade, the cyclical drill-blast-muck-support method has been standard tunnel-driving procedure throughout the world. Whatever improvements occurred were the result of development of better tools for performing the various operations of the cycle. The electric locomotive replaced the mule and permitted the use of larger muck cars. The steam drill, which ended the day of the double jack, was itself quickly made obsolete when compressed air replaced steam as the source of drilling energy. Power shovels were introduced to save the time and money involved in the hand-loading of excavated materials. A cubic yard of rock tunnel muck can be excavated today for just half the man-hours of labor required in 1948. Developments over 20 years which cumulatively have resulted in this economy include: drifter drills mounted on hydraulically controlled booms and positioners; tungsten-car- bide-tipped bits; long feed shells on the drifters, making it possible to drill the full depth of a round without changing steel; better designed,

Some mine gases have been a real problem since the very beginning of underground mining, and in the early days there was insufficient knowledge to cope with them. The history of mining shows that until about the last 50 years, much work was done primarily by the hand methods which are primitive by today's standards. Miners had to contend with gases without the aid of enclosed lighting, permissible mine machinery, sophisticated testing devices, and high-pressure ventilating fans. In early days the miners were not educated about the different mine gases nor did they have the technical equipment to determine the actual composition of the deadly atmospheres they encountered. They simply applied a descriptive term to each gas or mixture of gases depending on its, effect on a person or the surrounding atmosphere. The gases or mixtures of gases were then referred to as "damps," a term which was probably derived from the German word "damps," meaning vapors or gases. The more common damps encountered were : Blackdamp A condition of the atmosphere in which a miner's light would be extinguished and in which breathing would be difficult, sometimes even resulting in suffocation. An atmosphere deficient in oxygen which could contain a combination of any of the mine gases. Firedamp A flammable mixture of methane and air which would either burn or explode when ignited. White Damp A mixture of gases containing carbon monoxide, most often found in mines during fires or after explosions.

A mass spectral scheme of analysis was devised which can be used to identify individually a single compound from a larger group of similar compounds. Mass spectra for 32 alkyl aryl sulfides are provided for future reference work, and analytical correlations used in producing the analytical scheme are discussed. Some of the correlations show that base peaks are either the same mass as the parent peaks or may be derived from cleavage alpha to the sulfur atom with migration of one hydrogen to the sulfur atom. Other spectral consistencies provide means of separating ortho-, meta-, and paratolyl arrangements in an overall analytical scheme. Determinations of chain lengths and separation of isomeric species are also discussed.

A major difficulty encountered during the research was that nation¬al countries (almost world-wide) are in the process of revising their electrical hazard reduction standards. Their principal goal is to align their standards with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Recommendations Publication Series 79. (31-37) Additionally, CENELEC is requiring all Common Market countries to harmonize their standards. (85) However in the coal mining industry some hazard re¬duction techniques are not being accepted because some systems may not be applicable. Therefore, past literature might not directly relate a country's current feeling about explosion-proof standards. An authority in the United Kingdom (which has been a leader in hazard reduction mainly through work at the Safety in Mines Research Establishment) brought up an additional point. (15) He hopes that since revising British standards BS229 into BS4683, with the intention of corresponding with the IEC 79 series, the recent CENELEC harmoni¬zation process will also follow IEC. (8, 9, 10) The past trend in other major Common Market countries prior to CENELEC's requirement results in the authors' speculation that the standards will be pattern¬ed after the IEC Publications. (5,17,60,84,102) Several letters were sent to the East Block countries but, disa¬ppointingly, replies were dispatched only from the USSR and Poland. Recent Polish standards (1973) were received, and a very close match to the IEC Publications has been noted. (76,77) Because of their economic community, it is extremely logical to assume that the East Block stand¬ards are therefore in concurrence with the IEC. Japanese specifications also appear to be compatible with the IEC Recommendations. (42,43)
