In connection with its renewed study seeking solutions to problems created by release of acid water from bituminous coal mines, the Bureau of Mines recently surveyed reports already written on the subject. This publication is based on that search. The Problem Poor distribution of water is evident on an ordinary geographic map of the United States. The more abundant supplies of surface water appear to be centered in the northeast, the southeast, and the central humid areas of the country. It is in the midst of this abundant surface water, in the Ohio River Valley, that most of the bituminous coal is mined. Varied industry has located in the valley to use the coal and the river. The coal is a source of power and o raw material. The river provides transportation for raw and finished materials; equally important, it provides the water that is used for cooling and processing in manufacturing. It also serves as a vehicle for the disposal of waste.

In most published discussions and theories of in situ combustion, the combustion fronts are assumed to be vertical. However, evidence from field tests leaves no doubt that combustion fronts often advance more rapidly along the top than near the bottom of a formation as a result of difference in density between injected air and formation liquids. The approximation proposed in this paper to determine the movement of the resultant tilted combustion surfaces states that the vertical rate of movement of combustion surfaces is proportional to the horizontal oxygen flux. Where self-ignition is possible, the proposed method demands that a secondary combustion surface exist around production wells which produce some oxygen. These secondary combustion surfaces may be formed long before the primary combustion surface can advance from injection to production wells. Heat liberated near production wells at these secondary combustion surfaces can contribute to an early increase in production rate. Results indicate that significant oil recoveries cannot be obtained from the usual flood patterns (five-spots, seven-spots, etc.) without producing large volumes of unused oxygen. Ideally, to increase oxygen- consumption efficiency, well patterns should allow oil production from a first line of production wells and gas production from more distant lines of producers. However, it may be desirable to produce some gas at all wells to support (and benefit from) active secondary combustion surfaces. Results indicate that the well spacing through which combustion can be advanced is larger than that predicted by other methods. A large number of production wells may still be desirable to take quick advantage of gravity drainage. From a comparison with results at South Belridge field, California, it appears that this method adequately describes oxygen concentration and temperature histories and combustion-front shapes. However, this method does not accurately locate the most advanced point of the combustion surface. There is some field evidence to substantiate the actual presence of secondary combustion surfaces at South Belridge. Use of the proposed method appears warranted at this time when lay-over of the combustion surface can be anticipated. INTRODUCTION The assumption of vertical combustion fronts has been embodied in all previous publicationsl-6 which use the movement of combustion fronts away from injection wells to determine the temperature and fluid distributions in the reservoir. The only paper concerned with a mathematical model of the combustion process in which a nonvertical combustion front is used was written by Gottfried.11 Actually, nonvertical combustion fronts have been observed in most in situ combustion field tests for which adequate data are available.7, 8, 6 In practice, the typical vertical extent of the burned zone decreases with distance from the injection well, and this burned zone is at or near the top of the sand body. In some cases, such as at South Belridge field near Taft, Calif., the combustion surface is almost horizontal over a very large area.8 Thus, for some years an obvious and serious gap has existed between theory (vertical fronts) and practice (tilted fronts). This is indicated in Fig. 1. Tilted combustion fronts such as observed at South Belridge8 sometimes result from the natural tendency of injected gases to rise to the top of an oil sand. "Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The Mississippi Valley-type deposits occur in massive, homogeneous dolostones from which diagenesis has obliterated all primary sedimentary structures. The mineralisation forms irregular, lens-shaped stratabound bodies, mostly in the lower part of the dolostones. They are composed exclusively of sphalerite, galena, pyrite, marcasite and barite, with white sparry dolomite a common cementing phase. Mineral zoning can be recognised from pyrite and marcasite in the east to barite in the west. Sphalerite, the most common sulphide, occurs basically as colloform and banded crusts and galena as isolated cubic or skeletal crystals, mainly in the centre of the banded botryoidal sphalerite. The combined observations of the deposits' geology, geochemistry and ore petrology suggest a three-stage genetic model: carbonate sedimentation in a shallow-water environment; dolomitisation, probably after compaction, by fluids of connate origin and lateral evolution; and mineralisation by migrating solutions, perhaps related to oil-field brines, that originated in deep zones of the basin during diagenesis of the basinal mudrocks in the NE"

Many publications to date have advocated under- seas mining operations, optimistically overlooking the paucity of information on mineral distribution and the ocean environments in which minerals occur. Such articles (smattered with opinion, as is this article) are herein tempered by my more conservative views on the economics of mining under the seas. For purposes of this paper, underseas mining refers only to the deeper surficial deposits of the continental shelf and the deep sea floor, i.e., the deposits of phosphorite and manganese nodules.

A method for treating high-iron Arkansas bauxites for recovering both abrasive and metal-grade bauxite has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. Present practice usually produces a reject containing appreciable quantities of metal-grade bauxite; however, the processing renders the alumina in the reject unsuitable for the Bayer extraction treatment. Thus the Arkansas abrasive bauxite industry has, in the past, produced little or no metal-grade bauxite. The present investigation was made to determine the possibilities of batter utilization of those particular bauxites through recovery of the wasted metal-grade portion. The large expansion of aluminum-production facilities planned for 1951-53 makes recovery of metal-grade bauxite from presently treated abrasive and marginal abrasive ores en especially timely objective and a welcome addition to our aluminum potential. The quality of the Arkansas bauxites and the inherently associated titania content have made this material particularly attractive to the abrasives industry. however, the gradual depletion of natural abrasive-grade bauxite reserves in this area, the comparative scarcity of high-grade ore, and the difficulty of maintaining adequate reserves have necessitated blending different grades of bauxite calculated to meet specifications. Production of abrasive-grade bauxite from tile, high-iron reserves 13 becoming, increasingly necessary. In one commercial operation, producing abrasive-grade from ores averaging slightly less than 10 percent Fe2O3, approximately 2.7 tons of ore are required to produce 1 ton of abrasive-grade bauxite. The reserves of ore of this grade, however, have been considered inadequate for a long-range production, and ultimately ores averaging 12 to 15 percent Fe2O3 will have to be treated to moot the continued demands of the abrasive industry.

The Tamano Refinery has developed two new processes for removing the impurities, arsenic, antimony, and bismuth from an electrolyte. The first process involves bleeding the surface electrolyte in the electro-refining cells. The copper concentration level in the outermost layer is lower than that in any of the other layers, while the impurity levels are almost the same in all layers. Bleeding the surface electrolyte increases the amount of impurities removed in the liberator by approximately 20%. The second process involves adsorbing antimony and bismuth from the electrolyte by means of chelating resin. As the electrolyte passes through the packed column of chelating resin, antimony and bismuth are selectively adsorbed. They are then desorbed by means of hydrochloric acid, and then recovered in the form of a highly concentrated antimony chloride solution by means of evaporation. This process almost doubles the capacity for removing antimony from an electrolyte.

At Cameco Corporations' Cigar Lake Project, large excavations are developed on the 480 Level and 500 Level must remain stable for at least 15 years to host underground processing infrastructure. Following the successful dewatering of the mine in October 2009, subsequent internal rockmechanics investigations augmented by third party technical investigations; determined that to keep the back of the Water Flush Crusher/Run-of-Mine (WFC/ROMs) excavation stable; required a rehabilitation strategy to mitigate deterioration/deformation of the WFC walls and intersection pillars. The mechanism of failure propagating the movement of the excavation walls is understood to be controlled by the presence of a dominant E-W striking and steeply dipping foliation within a relatively weak and mildly altered rockmass sub-parallel in strike with 14 meters high walls and an intersection span approaching 15 meters. The application of open and resourceful communications between site mining engineers, geologists, contract mining staff, construction management experts, corporate mining and civil engineers, and third party technical experts resulted in a multi-faceted short-term ground support strategy consisting of standard bolting and screening, deep-seated modified-strand cable bolts coupled with heavy gauge mesh straps, rockmass reconditioning using low-pressure grout injection, and horizontal cable-lacing for the intersection pillars applied in lifts using a top-down methodology. The intention of the short-term strategy was to stabilize the excavation so that a long-term structural steel support installation - consisting of composite concrete walls, and arch support applied to the side walls and crown of the back - could be constructed safely. This paper summarizes the evolution of the short and long-term ground support strategy and criteria for the WFC/ROMs excavation developed using elements of civil, mining and hydrogeologic design.

n interesting situation arose last week when two Vaal River residents wrote to me (and a third telephoned) giving me details of how Sasol wanted to develop an open-cast coal mine on the south bank of the Vaal, just upstream of the Barrage. This is agricultural land and is across the river from Millionaire?s Row, where a number of wealthy people have built river-side mansions. The mine would be hidden by a 30 m-high (10 storeys) earth wall set 300 m back from the edge of the river. It could operate 24 hours a day.

Three drilled foundations for an elevated water-tank were instrumented, tested and monitored during construction and the first two years in service. One shaft was load tested by the Osterberg method. A void was detected in one shaft by cross-hole sonic logging, pulse-echo logging and concrete coring. The void was instrumented, hydrostatically tested and pressure grouted. The shaft was ?abandoned? and replaced by two smaller shafts with a straddle beam cap. One of the replacement shafts and the cap were instrumented. The strain that appeared in the abandoned shaft, the replacement shaft and the cap were monitored during the remainder of the construction, through the commissioning test and the first two years of service. The results demonstrate the precision and sensitivity of the vibrating wire strain gage.

There are two main challenges in analysis of spectral data: to output as accurate an interpretation of the sample mineral assemblage as possible and to then use the spectral data to map out trends (downhole, across section or traverse) that will assist the exploration geologist to target drilling and further exploration. This paper will discuss methods of extracting the maximum amount of information from spectral data and examples of plotting the information downhole, in section and plan view to assist in exploration and mining. A method of improving the efficiency of solid-liquid separation during centrifugal filtration has been developed. It consists of increasing the pressure drop across the filter cake using extraneous means such as pressurizing a filter chamber. This method, which may be referred to as hyperbaric centrifugation, is designed to increase filtration rate during the drainage cycle and, hence, to produce drier cake. In the present communication, the results obtained in a series of batch centrifugal filtration experiments are presented. The results obtained on fine coal and mineral samples show that cake moistures are approximately 50% lower than the case of using ambient pressure.

This paper illustrates the application of geostatistics to a roll front type uranium deposit located in Wyoming. The steps involved in calculation of experimental variograms, variogram modeling, and verification of the resulting models are described in detail. The resulting spherical variogram models for grade thickness and thickness show strong geometrical anisotropies. The major axis of anisotropy for both variables is approximately parallel to the axis of the roll front and the minor axis perpendicular to the roll. This model confirms the technique of drilling "fences" across the roll front, where the drilling is much closer together than the fences along the roll.

The oxygen flux into water-covered reactive sulphidic tailings is required for evaluating the long-term performance and predicting the quality of engineered shallow water covers. This information can also serve as an input to the design of water covers for reactive tailings decommissioning. This paper describes some dissolved oxygen (DO) profiles recently measured in the field across the tailings/water interface and oxygen fluxes derived from these profiles. These fluxes are compared with previously reported flux values from similar field measurements. Techniques and pitfalls for measuring DO profiles and calculating oxygen fluxes are also discussed.

Gold deposits of the Carlin Trend occur within sedimentary rocks deposited across the Paleozoic continental margin. Lithologically dissimilar units, juxtaposed along the Roberts Mountains Thrust Fault system, constitute three distinct stratigraphic packages: autochthonous miogeoclinal carbonates, allochthonous eugeoclinal siliciclastic rocks, and an overlying coarse clastic overlap assemblage. Gold deposits occur within all three stratigraphic packages, with economic concentrations localized at structural and stratigraphic settings similar to those which host petroleum traps. Along structural breaks, gold is selectively concentrated within favorable stratigraphic units. Host stratigraphy controls the character of the ore, including average grade, grade variability, physical properties and metallurgical response.

The definition of sustainable development is often taken from the so-called “Brundtland” report, requiring that activities of the current generation not detract from the potential welfare of future generations. Mining is often held up as unsustainable in this regard, since the extracted resource is non-renewable. Yet Brundtland’s definition of sustainable development also requires that the current generation address the disparity in welfare across the globe, a facet of Brundtland’s report that most have ignored. This paper examines the impact of mining on the welfare of the poor, empirically assessing mining’s contribution to this second facet of sustainable development.

A survey of 1250 surface and underground coal mines across the United States was made according to a stratified sampling technique based on national coal districts. A total of 171 responses (13.7% response rate) have been returned and summarized, giving a picture of computer usage in the coal industry. Overall, 63.5% of the respondents use computers, but the percent varied from 100% for large mines to only 44.1% for small mines. As expected, a proliferation of microcomputers has pervaded the industry. Importantly, in spite of the high usage of computers in the industry, sophisticated engineering applications have not yet burgeoned.

Kestrel Coal has undertaken a surface-to-seam consolidation program of faulted ground prior to longwall retreat in the 304 panel. Micro fine cement is used to improve the rock mass quality and therefore reduce the risk to personnel and equipment whilst increasing previously assumed sterilised reserves. The program is based on information attained from previously successful grouting campaigns in the Queensland coal area and follows the decision making process to ensure there is sufficient spatial permeation of cement across the faulted area. This data is used to assess the residual risk to the business in terms of health, safety and production

The goal of aggregates producing companies across the United States is to ensure their workers go home safely each day. At the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers are pursuing this vision of safety and health through a fact-finding approach for reducing injury illness in various mineral sectors. Surveillance data from Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has been the source for such analyses. It helps to focus research efforts on key machinery, workers, and their tasks. The second installment of this two-part series follows last month's focus on crushed stone.

Carbonaceous sedimentary rocks are abundant in the upper part of the caldera or maar that hosts the Puebio Viejo Au-Ag district, and much of the Moore sulfide zone is in these rocks. These rocks are thinly layered and contain scattered plant remains and variable amounts of volcaniclastic debris and pyrite. The carbonaceous matter in the sediments yields no X-ray diffraction pattern and is not graphite. It has C/N ratios of 4 to 10, and &13C values of about -25 per mil, which indicate that it is dominantly of marine organic origin and partly degraded. Atomic S/C ratios in the unmineralized part of the carbonaceous rocks have a median of about 1.2, much higher than most similar unmineralized rocks, reflecting not only the abundance of pyrite in the sediments, but also the fact that the organic material contains several percent sulfur. Extracts from the organic material indicate that it is thermally mature and that it reacted with the hydrothermal solutions. Atomic S/C ratios in the mineralized carbonaceous rocks are generally higher than those in unmineralized carbonaceous rocks, ranging to values of 5 and more. These differences indicate that significant amounts of carbon were consumed by the reduction of sulfate and metal chloride complexes in the mineralizing fluids as they passed through the carbonaceous sediments. Direct reaction between organic material and ferrous chloride-bearing, acid-sulfate hydrothermal solutions probably caused continuous deposition of pyrite during this period. Intermittent deposition of gold from chloride complexes by the same reaction was probably facilitated by boiling or C02 effervescence.

The Hybinette electrorefining process for production of cathode nickel was in use at Falconbridge Nikkelverk A/S, Norway, until 1975 when conversion to the new chlorine leach process was started. In 1978 the conversion to electrowinning had been completed, but further major improvements to the process have been made up to 1987. After a major expansion program in 1985 - 87 the refinery has a nickel capacity of 54 000 mt Ni/year. The main feed materials to the process are converter matte from the Falconbridge smelter in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, and from the BCL smelter in Selebi-Phikwe, Botswana. A typical composition of the mixed feed to the refinery is: 40 - 45% Ni, 25 - 30% Cu, 20 - 22% S, 2 - 3% Fe and 1.0 - 1.5% Co. The matte is chlorine-leached in the first process step, nickel being dissolved selectively in a train of leach-cementation tanks. Essentially all copper and sulphur that was present in matte appears in the leach residue as CuS. In 1986 an autoclave treatment stage was added to the process to improve nickel extraction from the leach residue. The resulting strong nickel chloride solution is purified by the process steps (1) precipitation of iron and arsenic, (2) solvent extraction of cobalt and other minor elements and (3) precipitation of lead and the remaining impurities. The nickel solution is then fed to the tankhouse, where various nickel products are produced by electrowinning. The chlorine gas that is produced during the electrolysis is returned directly to the chlorine leaching tanks to dissolve more matte. After stripping from the loaded organic phase and solution purification cobalt is also produced by electrowinning. The copper sulphide leach residue, which contains some nickel, is dead- roasted in fluidized-bed roasters. The sulphur is recovered and sold as sulphuric acid. The calcine is leached in spent copper electrolyte, from which cathode copper is produced by electrowinning. Precious metals and the remaining base metals are recovered from the copper leach residue. The Falconbridge chlorine process is very versatile. It can accept a wide range of impurities in the feed and still produce metals of exceptional purity.
