Lime was a highly useful commodity thousands of years before the simple chemistry of its manufacturing process was known. The employment of lime for agriculture, building, and even certain essentially chemical purposes is so old that its origin is among the unrecorded details of man's first ventures into the manufacture and use of prepared substances. Lime is a most versatile material and consequently has come to be widely utilized in modern civilization. Immediately before the depression of the early 1930's the annual production of lime in the United States was more than 4 million tons, valued at 33 to 42 mil-million dollars. This output was sold to many industries, so many that mere enumeration becomes tedious.

THE most acceptable approacl1 to analyzing rock behaviour, at the present time, is based on the application of principles of mechanics and strength of materials. Analyses have been made in which the criterion of failure is based on maximum stress (1) and on Mohr's rupture theory (2). If such analyses are to be carried out, the mechanical properties of the rock must be known within acceptable limits. Although an adequate correlation of laboratory test results with field conditions has not been established, test results have been published (3) on the basis of their comparative value. That is, test results may be useful for comparing the behaviour of different rocks under similar loading conditions or of a particular rock under different loading conditions. This study aims at establishing some of the mechanical properties of an andesite rock by testing specimens cut _from diamond drill core. Drill core (EX) was provided from run-of-mine drilling by New Dickenson Mines Ltd. and Campbell Red Lake Mines Ltd.

Coal production in the United States reached a record level in 2005, ending the year at 1.03 Gt (1,133.3 million st) according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (Table 1). Production in 2005 was 19.2 Mt (21.2 million st) higher than the 2004 level of 1 Gt (1,112.1 million st) and surpassed the prior record set in 2001 by 5.1 Mt (5.6 million st). Although total U.S. coal consumption rose in 2005, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sector by 2.2 percent and declined in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption decreased slightly.

Potgietersrust Platinums Ltd (PPRust) is Anglo Platinum?s only open pit operation. The major slope stability concern at PPRust is rapid, small-scale brittle failure on the west wall of Sandsloot open pit. In order to improve safety and mine more economically, a comprehensive slope monitoring strategy has been implemented. In the last 3 years four new state-of-the-art monitoring systems have been installed namely an ISSI microseismic monitoring system, a GeoMoS automated prism monitoring system, prismless Riegl laser scanners and a GroundProbe slope stability radar (SSR). Groundwater monitoring and visual monitoring have also been improved over the same time period. To complement the visual inspections, SiroVision digital photogrammetry is now used for predicting where future failures may occur. All these monitoring tools provide primary monitoring which is used to identify high risk areas. The SSR is then set up in that area to provide early warning of failure so evacuation can be successfully done. Fault tree analysis has proved that with this comprehensive slope monitoring strategy the geotechnical risk at PPRust is greatly reduced, allowing mining to continue safely and economically in challenging conditions.

"Lake Shore Gold is engaged in commercial gold production at both the Timmins West and Bell Creek mines, located in Timmins, Ontario. Run of mine ore is processed at the Bell Creek mill which consists of a conventional gold mill flow sheet involving crushing, grinding, gravity concentration and carbon-in-leach (CIL) for gold recovery. Since 2009, the operating capacity of the mill has been upgraded from 2000 tpd tonnes per day (tpd) to over 3,000 tpd. The most recent expansion involved the installation of a low aspect ratio SAG mill to replace the secondary crusher. Without operational data on the low aspect mill, combined with a site team that was new to SAG milling, there were many challenges in achieving the target throughput from the circuit. Through the implementation of AwaRE advanced controllers, running in closed loop with PRC fragmentation cameras as well as embedded PARC modules within the Allen Bradley PLC, the site was able to rapidly develop a best operating practise and has been successful in creating a stable and consistent operational environment. Phase 1 of the expansion was completed at the end of 2012 and involved enhancements and capacity addition to the leaching and adsorption circuits, which increased the mill’s capacity to 2,500 tpd. Phase 2 of the expansion commenced at the end of July 2013 and involved the expansion of the crushing and grinding circuits. The expanded front-end of the mill now has a capacity of 5,500 tpd, and processes ore from both Bell Creek and Timmins West mines. The updated flow-sheet, as shown in Figure 1, illustrates the replacement of the two-stage crushing and ball milling circuit with a single stage crusher and a low aspect ratio SAG mill."

The latter area, developed by lumbering and farming, has supplied the majority of the employees, who, with training and experience and a desire to work and improve themselves, have become the backbone of the Company's 600 personnel.Opemiska began production in 1954 at a rate of 400 tons per day, using diesel power and road transportation. The rate was progressively increased and, by 1959, with hydro-electric power and rail transportation, the mine had reached its present production rate of 2,000 tons per day. It has produced concentrates containing over 430 million lbs of copper."

Thin films of TiO2 nanoparticles have been prepared by different reactive deposition methods, such as electron evaporation, ion plating and ion beam sputtering. Many properties especially the optical properties, are strongly related to the film morphology and surface roughness. Scanning force microscopy was employed to obtain information on the surface structure of as-deposited Ti(h thin films. The influence of the deposition conditions and the film thickness on the optical and structural properties has been investigated. The as-deposited films were found to be amorphous or polycrystalline with anatase structure.

A decision by joint-venture partners Anglo American, Gencor, and the Industrial Development Corporation to proceed with the expansion of the Columbus Stainless Steel plant in Middelburg will contribute significantly towards the economic growth that South Africa needs so desperately. The expanded facility, expected to come on-line in 1995, will be the largest single-plant producer of stainless steel in the world, and the company will rank sixth overall in world production.

When explosives are detonated in the borehole where there is an air gap between the explosive charge and the borehole of inner wall, the shock cave in an air gap travelling ahead of the detonation front sill be generated. This shock wave is called the precursor air shock wave (PAS). The explosive is precompressed by the PAS, and as a result of that the detonation failure occur on occasion. This phenomenon is well known as channel effect.

I hope that after the long evening and all the exercise that some of you took you won't be completely exhausted to listen to a little bit about pile testing. The topic that 1 have been given is pile testing. It seems to me useful to break this topic into some smaller pieces so that we can try and organize our thought a bit. As I understand the terms "pile testing", I believe we are really referring always to capacity, one way or another, so I am suggesting that we organize the things we are doing in terms of measurement of soil capacity and pile capacity. There are obviously two failure modes and we frequently speak of pile integrity rather than structural pile capacity, but it's really capacity that we are concerned about. Further within these breakdowns I am suggesting that we might look at the topic of soil capacity in terms of static methods and dynamic methods and, finally, within each one of these, measurements of axial capacity and measurement of lateral capacity. Also here some of these subdivisions might be there for the purpose of symmetry and finally the same sorts of breakdown in Pile Capacity area.

The growing interest in column flotation has created a need for a fundamental scale-up procedure which is capable of meeting the necessary design and control criteria for industrial columns. Unfortunately, most of the avail able scale-up procedures deal with column diameter only and not overall column volume. Current work focuses on the effect of bubble size distribution and air hold-up on the scale- up of column volume. A series of pressure transducers has been used to measure air hold-up along the length of a bench-scale column. These measurements have been used to validate a mathematical model of the air phase. In addition to scale-up, the model appears to have the potential for use in control of air hold-up and bubble size.

The Huitzuco mines lie in north central Guerrero, Mexico; production has been about 90,000 flasks of quicksilver since 1873. Near-surface ores fill extinct mud geysers and the deep deposits are chambered veins, stock-works in brecciated blocks, and replacements in limestone. The epigenetic minerals livingstonite, stibnite and sulphur occur in limestone, gypsum and dolomite through a developed vertical range of 260 meters. The deepest workings expose an increased amount of stibnite, which probably indicates that the lower limit of mercury mineralization is being approached. A resurgence of heat and water formed geysers over an extended area after the period of mercury mineralization. Mud geysers, which are situated, in the outcrops, contain the secondary mercury minerals, cinnabar and barccnite in the gravel and mud filling the vents. A 150-ton flotation plant is in operation concentrating stope fills that assay 3.0 kg. of mercury per ton. In one open stope, which is more than one hectare in area and 60 m. high, 150,000 tons are available. Introduction The Huitzuco mercury mines are of interest because of the unusual occurrence of ore in extinct geyser vents and the presence of several rare mercury minerals. Some of the deposits have typical characteristics of the telethermal zone and there is a gradation towards typical epithermal mineralization in depth. Halse,1 Villarel1o,2 Mactear3 and Merri114 have described the geology and the early operations in the district, and Bar-cena5 and Mallet6 have described the rare mercury minerals, livingstonite and barcenite, found at Huitzuco. Location The village of Huitzuco lies in the north central part of the State of (Guerrero, Mexico, 27 km. (16.7 miles) east of Iguala, which is the largest and most important town in the area. Iguala is served by the Mexican National Railways and also by the Mexico City-Acapulco highway. The highway is surfaced from Mexico City to Iguala, a distance of 200 km. (124 miles) by road, and there is a fairly good, level, dirt road from Iguala to Huitzuco. The elevation above sea level is about 1000 m. (3280 ft.). Instantaneous outbursts of gas in underground workings are similar in effect to great blasts of explosives, but without heat effects. Fortunately they occur only in a few localities in exceptional coal fields of the world and under exceptional geologic conditions. Such violent outbursts should not be compared with the ordinary outflows of gas into coal mines or with explosions of gas and dust. The phenomenon is essentially one of gas held in circumscribed areas under very high pressure and as a mining face or heading approaches such a place and the mining excavation sufficiently weakens the natural surrounding dam or shell, this is burst by the pressure just as by the discharge of a mass of explosives. The outbursts, so far as known to the writer, have been confined to coal beds and have not occurred in other mineral deposits. Hence, as discussed later, he believes that it is the relation of the gases to the coal material that is a factor in conjunction with others in producing conditions which permit the phenomena to occur when mining is done. The gases in most instantaneous outbursts have been hydrocarbon gases but in two coal fields they have been definitely found to be chiefly or wholly carbon dioxide. One of these localities in which CO2 outbursts have been frequent and have caused loss of life is in the southern part of the Gard basin, near Alais, in southern France. In 1919, the writer visited the Fontaine mine in this field the day following the occurrence of an outburst by which two men were smothered by carbon dioxide and fine dust. After 24 hr. the CO2 had not been entirely removed by the ventilating current. Occasional outbursts of CO2 have also occurred in other small basins in France, causing accidents, as in Puy-de-Dome. However, mines in the Gard basin, north of those in which CO2 outbursts have occurred, have experienced hydrocarbon gas outbursts. In the Lower Silesian coal field, Germany, there is a group of mines which have been subject to many instantaneous CO2 outbursts, some causing serious accidents, but the greatest disaster occurred recently

The Tek Process can produce masonry products such as bricks, roof or wall tiles, and block from virtually any inorganic waste. In the process the aggregate raw materials, portland cement, water and common chemicals are first mixed together; then mechanically subjected to several thousand pound pressure per square inch. This causes a novel chemical reaction between the cement, chemicals and water; producing the "patented" Tek adhesive binder which holds the aggregate together in a stone-like mix. Simultaneously, the desired product shape is formed. The building modules can have strengths of 8000 p.s.i. (pounds per square inch) with completely sound aggregates utilizing air curing for a period of 28 days. With most aggregates, 3000 p.s.i. is achieved within 24 hours. Eventual strengths usually exceed 5000 p.s.i. with almost any raw material. Water absorption ranges from 5-7.5 percent. Both absorption and strength figures are superior to the most rigid of any and all A.S.T.M. specifications for the highest quality bricks. In most locations, the product (when brick shaped is called Tekbrik) can be produced significantly more economically than can comparable grades of clay or other bricks, be- cause almost any inorganic waste materials or pollutant can be used as a raw material. The process results in a lower manufacturing cost as compared to clay bricks; fuel cost to operate a clay kiln represents a substantial portion of the total cost. Capital expenditure for a Tek plant also is lower due to the large investment in clay kilns. Transportation savings also are important, clay brick factories must be very large because the kilns are uneconomical unless they are large. Most bricks are manufactured at the sites of clay deposits in relatively uninhabited areas. The cost of transportation to the job site represents a considerable percentage of the selling price.

No blast evaluation is complete without fragmentation measurements which until now were inaccurate, costly, time consuming and created delays in production. “WipFrag.s”is a fully automated PC based fragmentation analysis system that uses digital photo analysis techniques to measure broken rock. Fragmentation can be measured in minutes using compact videocameras for image acquisition. Even subtle changes in rack quality can be detected providing the information necessary for pattern optimization, explosives evaluation, timing selection, benchmarking and blast model validation.

The Bureau of Mines has developed several techniques for draining methane from coalbeds in advance of mining. Drilling long horizontal holes from an underground location is one such technique, which was successfully demonstrated in the Pittsburgh and Sunnyside Coalbeds. The same technique has now been applied in the Mary Lee Coal bed at Jim Walter Resources, Inc.'s No. 4 Mine, Brookwood, Ala., where two holes were drilled horizontally--one to a depth of 1,010 feet (308 m) and the other to 540 feet (165 m). The 1,010-foot (308-m) hole proved successful in degasifying a portion of the Mary Lee Coalbed. The hole drained methane for 1 year, during which time the initial gas flow of 200,000 ft3/d (5,663 m3/d) declined to 65,000 ft3/d (1,840 m3/d). Total gas production was 40 x 106 ft3 (1.1 x 106 m3). The gas was of commercial quality, with 98 pct methane and a heat rating of 990 Btu/ft3 (36.89 Mj/m3). The methane emissions from the faces of the mine section advancing into the degasified zone were reduced by 60 pet. The 540-foot (165-m) hole was terminated prematurely when it became impossible to maintain an open hole. Because of caving, very little gas was drained through this hole.

Esso-BHP have installed a production supervisory control system that is presently controlling the offshore oil and gas facilities on the Barracouta and Marlin platforms from an onshore master station. This control is achieved with a computerized master station onshore which uses a UHF radio system for telemetry and control.The system is designed to control, monitor, and gather data from a large number of oil and gas production platforms and has flexibility to handle future variations in operating conditions.The system will be extended to the Halibut platform late in 1970 and to the Kirlgfish platforms during 1971.
