Mineral raw materials, labor, capital, and technology form the basis of industrial production. The augmentation of one or all of the elements--labor, capital, and technology--will result in industrial growth. Thus, an increase in the labor force would increase output. A similar result would be achieved by expanding capital investment and supplying labor with more equipment. Finally, industrial growth can be achieved by introducing more productive methods and techniques born of technological advancement. The Soviet Union has employed these elements in many patterns to catapult from an agricultural to an industrial economy in four decades. The early history of the Soviet Union was marked by limited capital and borrowed technology, forcing the Soviets to concentrate on an abundant labor reserve to support the industrial program. The source of this reserve was the rural population. In [1928], 80 percent of the working population was employed in agriculture. This figure dropped to 43 percent by 1956, whereas industrial employment in the same period increased from 8 to 31 percent.3/

Since coal has been designated as the short-term answer to the threatening world energy crisis, improved surface mining techniques, along with improved extraction and handling equipment, are needed to increase the amounts that can economically be mined by open pit methods. A dwindling supply of low cost oil and gas have dictated a major rethinking of our energy sources and their use. New methods for open pit coal mining have to be found to increase coal production and to meet more stringent reclamation laws. Modern twin-engine elevating scrapers can play a vital role in meeting these needs. They are readily available, with short delivery times, from several experienced manufacturers of earthmoving equipment. Recent developments of the elevator system have extended its working range to include many of the materials commonly encountered in open pit mining. The paper deals with the advantages of using twin-engine elevating scrapers in the performance of various mining tasks. These tasks range from utility work to the major task of using the scrapers as a primary stripping toot and, of even more importance, a stripping- reclamation tool for, with scrapers, the overburden can be moved and redeposited in the same strata sequence or soil horizon as in its natural state. A recap of current applications of the elevating scraper will be presented, along with proposed uses.

The most common approach used in the mining industry for mineral resources modeling is to estimate the grades using ordinary kriging and report the recoverable resources based on this deterministic estimated model. Mineral resources calculated with kriging are a smooth representation of the actual distribution of grades and do not provide an assessment of uncertainty. Unlike kriging, simulation reproduces the variability of the grades in the mineral deposit and provides an assessment of uncertainty. Reporting mineral resources directly on high-resolution simulation results would assume perfect knowledge of the grade at the time of mining and selectivity at the scale of the data. There will always be uncertainty left at the time of mining, so assuming perfect knowledge of the grade in the future is incorrect. There are two concerns when geostatistical simulation is used for resources modeling: the information and the mining selectivity effects. A new framework for resource estimation is proposed with two separate modules to address those concerns. The information effect is accounted for by anticipating the additional production data that will be available at the time mining to guide the destination for the mined material. The mining selectivity effect is addressed by mimicking the grade control procedure to get mineable dig limits at a chosen selectivity, represented by a minimum mineable unit size. In addition to a prediction of recoverable resources that will be closer to the material mined in the future, the framework proposed provides an assessment of local and global uncertainty for risk management.

Up to 19 chemical parameters were studied in flotation pulps in six Australian lead-zinc concentrators with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the nature of, and changes in, the chemical environment. This paperdiscusses collector residuals, metal concentrations in solution, and other parameters.Collectors used in the plants studied were various xanthates, Z-200, and Aerofloats. Xanthate residuals varied in different ways in most plants. However the general trend was for residuals to be at the O· 5-2 p.p.m. level in lead flotation and O· 5 p.p.m. or less in zinc flotation.Aerofloat residuals were also variable but in the plant concerned were at a much higher level (8-10 p.p.m.) than xanthate residuals. Z-200 residuals were in the 10-20 p.p.m. range and it was found that the Z-200 added to zinc flotation was reporting in dam return water and entering lead flotation.Copper concentrations in solution were negligibly low in those plants where cyanide was not used. When cyanide was used, copper was at the 5-20 p.p.m. level and appeared to be present as Cu(CN)-2. However the hiocyanatepresent may be important. Xanthate was also present in these solutions.Zinc concentrations ranged from 0·1 to 800 p.p.m. in different plants. The general trend was for the zinc level to be highest in the grinding circuit and to drop during flotation. However there was always an increase in zinc concentration when copper sulphate was added, even tho.ugh this incre.ase was not permanent, and the increase was greater with higher copper sulphate additions.The manganese concentration also increased appreciably during copper-activation of marmatite. In some plants lead concentrations increased from 0·1 to 1 p.p.m. during activation of marmatite.Calcium concentrations (20-1200 p.p.m.) and magnesium concentrations (10-600 p.p.m.) tended to be fairly stable in each circuit.

"The concentrator at Brenda Mines Ltd. treats a copper - molybdenum porphyry ore with current head grades of 0.185% Cu and 0.036% Mo. The consistently low head grades provided the driving force to explore methods of improving plant productivity. Computer based process control was recognized as one means of addressing this objective. Over the period from 1974 to 1982 a control system evolved which now extends to every area of the mill. Control strategies are built on elements of classical, modern and rudimentary expert control. In addition, the control system has often served as a catalyst for other technological developments. The economic returns associated with the system are very significant and it has played an important role in the mine's survival in times of poor metal markets. This paper presents an overview of the computer control system at Brenda.PreambleOne can scarcely avoid picking up a trade magazine or newspaper today without seeing some reference to technology and its potential impact on North American business. _A recurring theme is the need to apply technology to raise our standard of plant automation in the manufacturing and process industries. The general thesis of these articles has been concisely captured in the mutually exclusive set:AUTOMATE or EMIGRATE or EVAPORATEProcess control is one form of automation that has been successfully exploited by various sectors of these industries. In minerals and metal processing the wide scale adoption of process control technology has, until recently, been largely limited to a few companies - most of whom have a history in the area dating back to the early 1970’s. However, there is definitely an increased and much broader interest in process control as a technology which can improve performance, productivity and profit.The economic hardships that were visited on the mining industry in the early 1980's are not easily forgotten. It is the authors' conviction that the mining industry must move to implement proven technology, in particular process control, in order to be well postured for the next (inevitable) down cycle.In pursuing the technical and trade literature, one can discover a number of example of the successful utilization of process control systems in mining and related applications. The reduction of iron oxide, such as Fe203, to iron in the blast furnace is performed principally by carbon monoxide, but partly by solid carbon by the two following reactions: Fe2O3 + 3CO = 2Fe 4- 3CO2 2Fe2O3 + 3C = 4Fe + 3CO2 It is known that reduction by carbon monoxide takes place at a much lower temperature than reduction by carbon and that the reducing action of earbon monoxide progresses to the inside of the ore in lump form by gaseous diffusion. In the reduction by carbon, however, the reducing action takes place only at the contact surface of the ore and carbon, so that the more complete the reduction by carbon monoxide, the more efficient is the operation. However, the reduction does not progress as shown in the foregoing equation, because carbon dioxide acts oxidizingly on the metallic iron to such a degree that when the gaseous composition reaches a certain proportion of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, the reduction practically stops, even though the gases are moving slowly through the heated ore. The proportions of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the gas depend on the kind of iron oxide and the temperature of reduction, also on the duration of time in the reaction. The longer the time of the reaction, the higher the proportion of carbon dioxide obtained in the gas, but finally it will attain to a condition of equilibrium. "When Canadian potash was brought into production in the 1960s substantial research was carried out to develop the technology needed to cope with the unique conditions in Saskatchewan mines. The intense research has established Saskatchewan's position as a leader in production technology on a world scale, and as a leader in setting international standards for potash production. The industry is now more than two decades old and, although the mines operate efficiently, there are a number oj prominent areas of concern. High among these is the prediction, prevention and control of sodium rich brine inflows. Control has proven difficult or elusive in the potash mining horizon, but work continues in this area. Control of brine in the superincumbent limestone formation has proven to be easier and more conclusive.The first part of this paper describes the rehabiltation, diamond drilling, and grouting completed at Central Canada Potash, which reduced the brine inflow from approximately 82 l/min . at the beginning of the work to O.9/1min. when the backfilling was placed.The second part of the paper describes the rationale for choosing the rock mechanical instrumentation, the reasons for their placement and the rock mechanical data recorded with some interpretation.IntroductionCentral Canada Potash is located approximately76 km southeast of Saskatoon, near the Yellowhead Highway. The commercial production of potash at CCP started at the end of 1969 at a depth of 1021m below surface. The potash zone, which is presently mined, is approximately 3.35 m thick . Stress relief methods using yielding pillars are used in the design of the mining layouts. The planned extraction ratio averages 35070 . The mine is designed to produce approximately 3.3 million tonnes of sylvinite per year to give approximately 1.3 million tonnes of finished product (muriate of potassium) per year."

Paper presented at the 28th International Geological Congress held in Washington DC, July 1989 (International geochemical mapping sessions). Surface drainage samples, the usual media employed in mapping national territories, cannot be used for the geochemical mapping of carbonate terrains because there is no regular surface-drainage pattern on karst. Suitable sampling media have been studied in Yugoslavia, one-third of which consists of karst terrain. Sampling designs for the work were based on analysis of variance techniques. During initial investigations of various sampling materials in NW Yugoslavia sediment and aquatic moss from karst springs, along with soil, were established as the most appropriate media. Modified sampling procedures were then carefully applied along the entire Yugoslav karst belt, which includes terrains of contrasting topography, climate, pedology and vegetation. The studies indicate that climate and relief do not systematically influence the geochemical composition of soil. Regional and local variability was assessed for 21 chemical elements and the feasibility of producing stable regional geochemical maps was determined for a number of elements on the basis of sampling aquatic moss and sediment from karst springs and soil

With the development of underground mining, the deformation of roadway floor has increasingly become a major constraint on the safe and efficient production of coal mines. To address the floor deformation that was caused by massive stress concentration in roadway, an innovative method based on deep-hole directional tensile blasting technology is put forward. By taking No.122108 working face in Caojiatan Coal Mine as engineering background and analyzing the mechanism of deformation, a numerical simulation and field test are carried out to verify the effect on deformation control of this technology. It is found that the deep-hole directional tensile blasting technology can actively control the fracture position of the roof in the gob area and cut off the stress transmission path, so as to relieve the stress in the roadway. And since different blasting parameters have different impacts on the stress relief effect, a numerical simulation is implemented and it is found that the stress relief effect is the best when blasting depth is set to be 32 m and the blasting angle be 60°. By applying the optimal blasting parameters to the field engineering test, it can be seen that the deep-hole directional tensile blasting technology could effectively reduce maximum stress value and stress field range of the both sides of the roadway, and make the stress field far away from the roadway, thus effectively controlling the deformation of the roadway floor. The deep-hole directional tensile blasting technology can effectively solve the problem of roadway floor deformation and can be safely applied to engineering sites.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in December 1936 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3324, under the title "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to July 31, 1,936." This list included 170 brand names. Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1937 placed 35 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Ten permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present list contains 196 brand names, one explosive having been placed on the list subsequent to June 30, 1937. Due to the importance of maintaining open airways on a longwall panel, mine management decided to install cribs made of foamed cement. Foamed cement had been used at other company operations on several projects. A recent test at a sister operation had proven the crib installation technique and established that foamed cement cribs could provide better support than wooden cribs. The area to be supported was in a remote location; the limited material needs of foamed cement cribs offered a substantial advantage. In mid February 1993, 75 foamed cement cribs were installed on the tailgate of the active longwall panel. The 75 cribs resisted both horizontal and vertical stresses while successfully supporting the entry.

An in situ gravimetric technique based on wetting and capillary action principles has been used to investigate the wetting and penetration of synthesized alumina samples and commercial magnesia spinel refractories by CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-Fe2O3slags. Synthetic slags of 40CaO-40SiO2-20Al2O3 (in weight per cent) with 0 to 9 weight per cent Fe2O3were used and the experiments were conducted at temperatures 1370 to 1470ºC under argon. The contact time between the sample and the slag was 30 minutes. The results show that the wetting and penetration are enhanced by the iron oxide addition in the slags. Addition of Fe2O3from 0 to 9 weight per cent resulted in a significant increase in the slag penetration into the magnesia spinel refractory by a factor of about 7 and a moderate increase in the synthesized alumina by about 60 per cent. The addition of Fe2O3enhanced the wetting (??cos?, where ? is the surface tension of the slag and the contact angle between the slag and the refractory) by 5 to 18 per cent. An increase in temperature from 1370ºC to 1470ºC resulted in a significant increase in the penetration of a 6 weight per cent Fe2O3slag in the alumina and magnesia samples by a factor of4 to 5 and a decrease in wetting by approximately 30 per cent. "The exploration of seamounts south of the Azores during the EMEPC/Açores/G3/2007 campaign allowed for the collection of 30 Fe-Mn crusts from the Atlantis, Great Meteor, Small Hyeres, Irving and Plato seamounts, as well as from the East Azores Fracture Zone. These were the first samples of Fe-Mn crusts studied from these seamounts. The Fe-Mn crusts were analyzed using multiple analytical methods.The crusts are fairly homogeneous, showing typical textures for this type of occurrences. The Fe/Mn ratio, patterns and concentrations in rare earth elements, and the great homogeneity of the crusts lead to the conclusion that they have a hydrogenetic origin, precipitating directly from seawater. Although the content in Fe and Mn of the crusts is consistent with data available for the Atlantic, the mean concentration of Co is comparable to the average values for the Pacific. Cu and Ni show lower values than the ones known for the Pacific."

During the period from 1910 to 1920, there was a lively interest in the subject of grain growth and many papers were published, followed by interesting discussions. Questions dealing with the fundamentals of grain growth—why and how it occurs—were treated in papers by Howe,' .Jeffries,² Sauveur,² Chappell,4 Beilby,5 Mathewson and Phillips,6 Mc Adam,7 Carpenter and Elam,8 Stead and Carpenter,9 Ruder,l0 as well as others. Since that decade, much indeed has been done regarding the practical control of grain size, and it is now possible to order material having a size sperified in the American Society for Testing Materials classification. Also, one hears the term "spliced boundaries" used in connection with certain tungsten lamp filamentsl1 wherein it is important to prevent "sagging" between consecutive turns of the helix.12 This practical use of a certain knowledge as to the things that influence or even control grain growth should not be taken as an indication that the subject has been thoroughly explored and that nothing more can be learned from fundamental studies. It is with this thought in mind that a report of some observations and experiments on abnormal grain growth is believed justified. Abnormal grain growth is met with in heat-treating high-carbon steels in the austenitic range,'? in the hardening treatments of high-speed steels,14'15 and in the low-temperature annealing of strained low-carbon steels as in sheet and wire material. Entirely aside from these instances of exaggerated grain growth, which some might consider as freakish, it is thought that abnormal growth is simply a case where the growth forces and the forces tending to prevent growth are almost, but not quite, evenly balanced. Information relative to grain-growth characteristics in general may be obtained from a study of abnormal growth conditions, which may be looked upon as vantage points. DETA exhibits a highly selective depressant action on pyrrhotite without adversely affecting the collectorless flotability of pentlandite and chalcopyrite in nickel-copper ores of the Sudbury region. A simplified Eh-pH diagram has been constructed to illustrate the extended stability of elemental sulphur and to explain the collectorless flotation of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Cu and Ni ions, which are known to exist on the surface of pyrrhotite, promote the flotation of this mineral whether a collector is present or not. Thermodynamic calculations indicate that the action of DETA involves the sequestration of Cu and Ni ions from surfaces under a wide range of redox conditions; analysis of flotation test filtrate indicates as much as a 20-fold increase in the concentration of Ni and Cu ions. It appears that DETA may enhance the self-hydrophobicity of chalcopyrite and pentlandite by exposing more of the sulphur-rich surface sites for bubble contact in flotation. "A number of technologies are in practice for selectively removing coarse gold from conventional grinding circuits. These circuits are often designed so that the grinding mill output is size classified, with large (or high density) particles being removed before the tails are returned to the mill. Because of the high relative SG of gold, and the fact that some forms of gold such as free gold do not break apart during conventional grinding, coarse gold can accumulate in the circulating load, and eventually be lost.Eriez has developed a flotation cell that uses fluidized water to enhance flotation of coarse particles. More than 40 units have been sold in industrial minerals, and we are now exploring applications for the HydroFloat® in the gold industry.Mineros S.A currently produces approximately 120,000 oz of gold per year by gravity concentrating alluvial gold ore with a mean particle size of 330 microns, followed by further concentration using a Falcon separator. A 400 mm diameter pilot-scale HydroFloat® was added to the tails of the Falcon to test whether additional gold could be captured. Enrichments of 50-600 times and recoveries normally in excess of 95% were achieved. This allowed direct smelting of the gold concentrate. Metallurgical results and operating parameters such as water addition and power will be discussed during the presentation.This result opens the possibility that the HydroFloat® could be used directly in the grinding circuit, for removing coarse gold in the circulating load. This work also shows the possibility that the HydroFloat® can produce a throwaway tail, which will reduce the size of the circulating load stream and the grinding requirements of the circuit."

Appropriate software and hardware necessary to adapt a x-ray CT analyzer for determination of coal washability has recently been developed and sucessfully tested for well characterized samples under laboratory conditions. Evaluation of the CT-based analyzer under simulated on-line conditions is also presented to verify the on-line capabilities of the newly developed x-ray CT analyzer for the control of coarse coal cleaning circuits. The investigation shows that the data obtained from CT washability analyses compare favorably with experimental sink-float data. Further, image frequency was considered to evaluate the CT-Based coal washability analyzer for simulated on-line conditions. Specifically the number of observations (image spacing) needed for accurate sampling and the total time required to perform the calculations for a representative data set were determined.
