An alinement (steering) sensor for continuous mining machines has been developed under a Bureau of Mines contract. A laser source in the entry projects a beam parallel to the centerline of the entry. The beam is optically shaped to a narrow, vertical fan and illuminates an array of optical sensors bunted on the mini machine. These sensors interpret the location of the beam into meter readings of heading (angle) error and lateral displacement errors. The system, which was tested for 5 months in an operating mine, appears to be fundamentally sound, and with some modification, should be applicable to remote or automatic guidance of continuous miners and other machines.

The suppression of the austenite-martensite transformation that can be brought about by the addition of certain alloying elements, such as manganese or nickel, to plain carbon steel has been known for a long time, especially since Guillet's investigation at the beginning of this century. The extent to which the critical range is lowered depends upon the percentage and nature of the special element added. First the Arl point is lowered gradually, then at a certain percentage a sudden lowering to about 300" C. occurs. The addition of still larger percentages of the alloy may result in lowering the Ar, point to room temperature or below, in which case the steel remains austenitic at room temperature, especially after rapid cooling. The effect of alloying elements of this general type on the lowering of the transformation temperature is well illustrated by Sauveur(lJ$ in his Fig. 281a, reproduced here as Fig. 1. This type of curve is characteristic of both manganese and nickel though it requires about 21/2 times as much nickel as of manganese to produce the same result. The influence of nickel in retarding the transformation of austenite into the lower transition constituents is due to its lowering of the critical range of the steel, which is also well illustrated by Sauveur'l) (after Osmond) in his Fig. 284, reproduced here as Fig. 2. Scott('" presents a diagram illustrating the effect of manganese on the Ac3 and Ara points which is strikingly similar to the diagram above referred to in Fig. 2 concerning the effect of nickel. Lowering the critical range has the effect of increasing the viscosity, or, rigidity, of the alloy at the time when it is undergoing its transformation, which greatly slows down the transformation reaction velocity, and this, in turn, makes it easier to suppress, wholly or in part, the transformational changes. For technical renovation of the thermal plant, one frame structure workshop of 50,000 m2 (59,800 yd2) construction area and one reinforcement concrete chimney of 150m (492 ft) height shall be demolished by blasting at same time. The engineering environment of which is complicated and the accommodation space is limited. Therefore, the collapse sequence, direction, scope of the dismantled building must be accurately controlled to ensure the safe operation of the adjacent generator unit and transformer station. By taking technical measures of theoretical analysis and numerical simulation etc., as well as research on structures collapse method and detailed delay interval, it puts forward the technology of bidirectional folded collapse of the workshop and it uniquely adopts the initiation system that combined with “half-second delay inside drilling” and “millisecond delay outside drilling”. Additionally, by using of the integrated vibration reduction technology in combination of the blasting ruins, buffer ditch and damping ditch, it has safely accomplished the demolition blasting work in high efficiency. Besides the demolition blasting vibration signal is collected and analyzed. The success of the demolition blasting will become valuable reference to other similar works.

The Fiji islands are the world's most ac- cessible Cenozoic remnant arc. They provide occasional subaerial exposures of an arc frag- ment some 750 km long and 80 km wide, or about the size of the NE Japan volcanic arc. The fragment is one part of the former Vitiaz Arc which once connected Fiji to Vanuatu and Tonga. The Fijian portion has the most completely stu- died Tertiary section which contains a history of arc volcanism from the late Eocene to late Miocene (the Early and Mature Arc stages), a rich diversity of subsequent magmatic responses to the most recent episode of arc rifting (Ear- ly Rifting stage), and an example of transition from arc to intraplate volcanism as this rift- ing proceeded (Late Rifting stage). The arc fragment is surrounded by younger backarc ba- sins. The chemical composition of magmas in both the arc and backarc changed with time, but in opposite directions. In the arc, magmas be- came enriched in sialic components from the Early Arc to Early Rifting stages, whereas in the basins the magmas became more similar to mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) with time. In southwest Fiji, the oldest backarc basin has subducted obliquely beneath the remnant arc du- ring the last 3 Ma, resulting in chemically ex- otic calcalkaline volcanism. During the last decade over 150 radiome- tric age measurements and 650 rock analyses, many with trace element and isotopic measure- ments, have been obtained for samples from Fi- ji, Tonga, and the surrounding seafloor (Figs. 1 and 2). These data are summarized, drawing from the publications of Colley and Hindle (1984), Gill et al. (1984), Hawkins and Melchi- or (1985), Kroencke (1984), Malahoff et al. (1984), Scholl et al. (1985) and Whelan et al. (1985), from the specific research papers refe- renced therein, and from the half dozen or so manuscripts currently in preparation by these people and others.

Equations are developed which describe the growth of graphite nodules during a-phase graphi-tization under various limiting conditions. When carbon diffusion is rate controlling a modified Birchenall-Mead equation predicts an "apparent activation energy" of 31 keal mole-1 for the parabolic growth constant. If reaction at the graphite or cementite interface is the slowest process growth kinetics are linear and the activation energy must be >50 keal mole-1. A comparison with the experimental observations confirms that carbon diffusion determines the rate of reaction. Apart from minor approximations associated with Lou! carbon solubility in a iron the theory may also be applied to I-phase graphitization. It is well-known that cementite exists as a meta-stable phase in Fe-C alloys and that if a specimen is held at diffusion temperatures for a sufficiently long period the cementite decomposes and graphite is precipitated. Graphitization occurs by the nu-cleation and growth of carbon nodules and several impurity elements catalyze the reaction when present in minute amounts.1 The growth kinetics of nodules have been extensively investigated in the fee ? range2, 3 and recently in the bee a range.1, 4 Experimental growth curves (nodule radius vs time) have slopes which decrease with time, but the scatter of points is generally too great for the precise shape of the curves to be determined with certainty. Birchenall and Mead5 concluded that they are parabolic in ? iron, indicating diffusion control, and that the migration of carbon atoms determines the growth rate. Harris et al, 1 advanced similar ideas for a-phase graphitization. On the other hand, Burke3 chose to regard the initial growth region as a transient followed by a linear law indicating interface control (i.e., cementite decomposition or graphite crystallization as the slowest process). Jeminson and Higgins6 originally considered the initial steep portions of "parabolie" to represent a linear growth law also. In support of these ideas it has been noted that the apparent ac-

The electrical conductance of molten FeS was studied as a function of temperature and composition. It was found that stoi-chiometric FeS (36.5 pct S) shows a minimum specific conductance of 400 ohm-1 cm-1. For the Fe-rich melts the conductivity increases with increasing amount of iron to about 4850 ohm-1' cm-I at 26 pct sulfur. For the sulfur-rich melts the conductivity increases with increasing amount of sulfur until it reaches a maximum of 1300 ohm1 cm-1 for 37.4 pct S and decreases to 800 ohm-1 cm-1 for 38.3 pct sulfur. It is concluded that molten stoichiometric FeS is an intrinsic semiconductor in which the forbidden gap in the electron energy level diagram is quite narrow. Excess sulfur acts as an acceptor impurity in providing a component of positive hole conduction, while excess iron acts as a donor impurity to increase the n-type conduction. K. Bornemann and G. von Ftauschenplatl used a four-terminal, direct-current cell to study the electrical conductance of molten copper sulfide. Their measurements showed a high conductivity, of the order of 100 ohm-1 cm-" and a positive temperature coefficient. From electrolysis studies, Savelsberg2 concluded that molten Cu2S and molten FeS are electronic conductors. Further. he found that molten FeS has a high specific conductance, of the order of 1500 ohm-' cm-', and a small negative temperature coefficient. Pound, Derge, and Osuch,3 using an ac Kelvin circuit and a four-terminal cell, measured the specific conductance of molten Cu,S, molten FeS, and various mixtures. They found that the specific conductance of the solutions followed a roughly additive rule of mixtures. Yang, Pound, and Derge4 showed from electrolysis measurements that the mechanism of electrical conduction in molten Cu2S, FeS, and mattes is primarily electronic. Further, they observed that small additions of CuCl suppress the electronic conduction whereupon the system behaves ionically.

"In recent years, the major effort in detonator development has been concentrated on ""non-electric"" systems. Existing types all involve some form of explosive reaction to transfer ignition energy from outside the borehole to the pyrotechnic delay element contained within the detonator. These may be based on low-energy detonating cords having grained or plasticized explosive cores, shock tube energy transmission principals and explosive gas ignition systems. Each has properties of internal and external effects not present in electric conductors.The MAGNADET System introduces transformer coupling into electric blasting circuits. Safety features with respect to current leakage, stray currents of AC or DC source, electrostatic energy and radio-frequency radiation are comparable to ""non-electric"" systems, with advantages in simplicity, speed of hook-up and range of application.The transformer device used is a small ferrite ring or toroid which is an integral part of each specialized detonator. The detonator legwires form the secondary side of the transformer winding. The primary side is a single wire loop common to all units within the circuit. Power is supplied from a frequency-tuned portable exploder with unique circuit-sensing features.The MAGNADET System is expected to have particular application to shaft sinking, raising and tunnelling where the protective features as well as speed and efficiency are critical factors. Applications of the 'MAGNA' booster in quarries, open pits and longhole deck charges offer control over vibration problems and elimination of surface noise.IntroductionFor many years, electric detonators and electric blasting systems dominated surface and underground applications where controlled delay times were required. "The acOustic impedances of seven rat lungs were measured at frequencies between 100 and 6400 Hz. Rats were divided into two groups: a silica exposed group (N=3) and a control group (N=4). The silica exposed group was injected intratracheally with silica solution. Three of the control group were intratracheallyinjected with saline. Between four and six weeks after theinjections, all lungs were excised and degassed. Lungs were,suspended in a pressure Chamber, with the trachea canula attached to the end Of a tapered impedance tube. The lungs were subjected to transpulmonary pressures between -30 cm H2O and 6 cm H2O to simulate deflation and inflation. With transpulmonary pressure being held constant, the impedance tube was excited with random noise. A dual channel analyzer calculated H12(f), the transfer function between the two microphones. This function was used to calculate the lung's impedance at that pressure. The impedance magnitude spectra of both groups typically had peaks at 2000,3500, and 5500 Hz. Statistically significant differences. (90%confidence level or greater) between the two groups occur at the 3500 Hz peak at transpulmonary pressures of 20, 8, 6, 4, and 2 cm of H2O. This fact seems to confirm that this method can detect. lung disease. Further research will indicate whether this method will be able to detect the onset Of coal worker's pneumoconiosis.INTRODUCTIONOne of the first studies of impedance Of the human lung were conducted by DuBois et al.[2] using the forced OscillatiOn technique. This technique, however, was limited to frequencies below 30 Hz. Further studies by Van Den Berg [6] revealed thatthe lung reflected higher frequency sounds (100-10,000 Hz), instead Of behaving as an anechoic termination. This discovery has lead to several studies of the acoustical properties of both human and animal lungs at high frequencies [3,4,5]."

The principal hazards are discussed and countermeasures are suggested in several areas. Drowning is the single largest fatal injury category. Special emphasis is given to the design, care and use requirements of personal flotation devices.

The family of Zn-Al (ZA), Zn-Ag and Zn-Al-Ag (ZINAG) alloys offers high mechanical properties, ease of finishing, the advantage of low energy and pollution-free melting. Also, present alternatives to the well developed alloy systems, such as brasses, bronzes, cast irons and aluminum alloys. The main objective of this paper is to measure thermal parameters in ZA, Zn-Ag and ZINAG hypoeutectic and hypereutectic alloys directionally solidified which present columnar, equiaxed and columnar to equiaxed transition structures (CET). Also, estimate the mechanical properties, such as microhardness and tensile parameters and correlate these with the thermal (cooling rate) and structural parameters (grain size and dendritic spacing). The different types of structures were analyzed with optical and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed the influence of concentration, microstructural arrangement and thermal conditions during solidification on the mechanical properties. The results of the present investigation are compared with previous experiments.

Anthracite was first mined in the Wyoming Valley and sold as an article of commerce in 1808. As some preparation has always been necessary to make it ready to burn, the preparation of anthracite must date back over a hundred years. Two vital factors have determined to a large extent the degree and the method of anthracite preparation. These are, first, the character of the beds worked and the methods by which they are mined and, second, the equipment used and practices followed in the burning of the coal. It is not the intention here to go deeply into these phases of preparation as a paper of no mean length could be prepared on the history of either. Rather, the intention here is to point out the main considerations and to show the influence they have exerted on the preparation of anthracitc. Mining Methods and Their Relation to Preparation In the beginning of the nineteenth century, the coal beds were virgin with the possible exception of some outcroppings that had been worked, to a slight extent, by the Indians. It is known that the American aborigines had a, knowledge of the use of this fuel, because when the Wyoming Valley was purchased from them, in 1754, they mentioned the fact that, by selling the land, they would lose their coal. Real mining of anthracite began about 1808 when Judge Jesse Fell, of Wilkes-Barre, discovered that the "common stone coal of the valley" could be burned in an open grate. For some years thereafter mining was conducted near the surface. The working p1aces were driven narrow; only the best of the coal was selected and the remainder was left in the ground. Only the lumps could be used, as no market existed for other sizes. As time passed, however, it became necessary either to go farther into the ground or to widen the working places. With good planning, the initial cost will be low and your return on investment will be maximized over the long term. Involving all members of your staff who will he using the new computer in the planning phase is also important. Their participation will alleviate any potential concerns they may have about new equipment, and their suggestions will provide valuable input for your specifications. After you define your proposed system, survey available hardware and software. The survey will help you in the next step, preparation of specifications. The specifications, along with a quote request, are then sent to various manufacturers. Consider the Manufacturer When selecting your minicomputer, one important item to consider is the manufacturer. Remember, when you buy a computer, you're also buying the services of a computer company. A firm that makes a commitment to its customers and provides a product that is field tested before releasing it for sale is preferable. Examine the company's maintenance and support packages, since every machine requires preventive maintenance. Does your manufacturer or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) support service sites in your area? Has their service record been commendable? Will they provide training for your personnel and a supply of circuit boards so you can retain a degree of self-service autonomy? Three methods of buying a computer involve the manufacturer, an OEM, and the systems house. Buying direct from the manufacturer means you go straight to the source, using no middleman. This gives you maximum flexibility; you can consider every alternative and many possible combinations of computers, peripherals, and software until you find exactly the right system for you. The OEM buys computers direct from the manufacturer and builds them into his own computerized, special purpose product. He usually sells a complete package, including software and hardware, and often noncompetitive equipment as well (a scientific or engineering instrument, for example), designed for the mining market. Because he offers a packaged product, the OEM can often charge less for the system than if you put the pieces together yourself. In many ways, the OEM also provides a unique system. And while the OEM sells a packaged solution, he also usually has the special market knowledge necessary to modify the system to meet your unique needs, if necessary.

Educational campaigns conducted by the manufacturers of explosives, the Bureau of Mines, mining companies, and safety organizations have contributed greatly in reducing accidents caused by explosives arid blasting. Despite these campaigns and the dissemination of information, accidents from explosives and blasting continue to be the direct cause of scores of fatalities and hundreds of nonfatal accidents annually, not only in the mineral industry but essentially wherever explosives are used. The experience of many mining companies and other users of explosives has proved that accidents from explosives can be prevented or averted by the proper training of employees in the handling and using of explosives and by the enforcement of definite rules and instructions for their use. Unfortunately, throughout the years numerous false impressions and ideas have grown up and around the use of explosives. Many of these can be traced back to the manner in which the users of explosives were originally taught, if instructed at all; and as with many types of misinformation in nearly all walks of life, those false ideas are decidedly persistent and being so cause much damage. Many if not most of the users of explosives gained their knowledge of explosives and blasting by watching others and more or less "absorbing" the procedures and thrones of the other fellow, who acted unconsciously as teacher or instructor. A study of explosives accidents reveals the results of such "teachings" when the causes of the accidents are determined, and as might be expected the results very often are far from good. THE chief factors influencing the decision to build the Big Missouri mill underground were the topography of the country and the climate. The location underground assured certain saving in the cost of operation, such as the hearing of the mill, shovelling snow, and handling ore, which, over a period of time, would offset the greater initial cost of the mill excavation and machinery installation underground, as compared with the cost of a like plant on the surface. At Gilman, Colorado, where conditions are somewhat similar, the Empire Zinc Company, at their Eagle mine, are treating their lead-zinc ore in a mill built entirely underground. Company officials made a study of this plant before proceeding with the mill at Big Missouri. LOCATION, CLIMATE, TOPOGRAPHY The Big Missouri mine is situated on the Upper Salmon river, 22 miles north of Stewart, B.C., which is at the head of Portland canal, a narrow natural channel which penetrates 100 miles inland from the coast into the Coast Range mountains. Stewart, the distributing centre for the district, is about 600 miles north of Vancouver. The Big Missouri claims lie on and down the sides of the Big Missouri ridge, which extends north and south between the Salmon River and Cascade Creek valleys. The ridge rises to an elevation of 3,600 feet, is about half a mile wide, and to the east slopes down to the Joker flats in Cascade Creek valley. The Big Missouri camp is located on the flats at elevation 2,800 (see Figure 1). Preliminary development of the property took place from this point with an adit driven under the ridge. The western side of the ridge slopes steeply down to the Salmon glacier at elevation 1,900. Ore found on the 2,850 level extended down, and, in order further to explore the ore-body, the 2,850 level was driven through to the west side of the ridge, a surface incline tramway was built, and a lower tunnel driven at elevation 2,350, five hundred feet below the original 2,850 level, from the west side of the ridge. This tunnel development avoided the necessity of sinking, which would have been costly, as the mine makes a great deal of water (see Figures 1 and 2).

FOUR portraits have recently been hung in the rooms of the Institute, in recognition of four illustrious men with whom we, as mining engineers and metallurgists, may claim fellowship. LUTHER. Martin Luther is often spoken of as a miner's son; but it is less generally known that John Luther, his father, was, in a small way, a metallurgist as well as a miner, and that Martin Luther himself, in his youth, worked in a forge or bloomary established by his father at Mansfeld, Saxony. Since this is the only manual occupation on his part of which we have any record, it is fair to assume that the great scholar and reformer derived from his work in this department the practical familiarity with the conditions of human labor so abundantly evinced in the homely illustrations which accompany even his serious arguments, and in the witty apothegms of his famous "table-talk." At the same time, I must confess that 1 have not been able to find in any of the works of Luther distinct allusions to mining or metallurgy. KÖRNER. Theodor Körner, a student at the Mining Academy of Freiberg, Saxony, threw himself into the German War of Freedom in the first decade of the 19th Century. He was a poet of no mean rank ; and his " Song of the Sword " is one of the great lyrics of literature. This poem was written but a few days before he died in battle. In many respects, Körner may be compared with our American hero Theodore Winthrop, who similarly met a glorious fate, and left behind him prophetic indications of genius, of which his premature death prevented the complete fulfillment. I am informed by a member of the Institute that Körner's admirable collection of minerals is still preserved at Dresden.

Several bauxite residue sands and muds produced by Bayer plants in the U.S. and overseas have been fractionated using dry and wet magnetic separators. The magnetic sand fractions typically contain about 60 wt% iron and the bulk of the radioactivity in this waste. The muds are more difficult to process than the sands, but some fractionation is possible using a combination of flotation and magnetic separation techniques.

"Sphalerite flotation in the absence of copper activation at moderately alkaline pH has been observed in laboratory studies. An in-plant test of this observation was conducted at Kidd Creek Mine LTD. using a portable minicell flotation circuit. The results confirm that raising the pH causes sphalerite flotation.The testwork with the minicell circuit is described. The circuit, built around 2, 51 cells donated by the Noranda Technology Centre, was funded by Air Liquide and NSERC. It includes a data acquisition system to monitor continuously dissolved oxygen, pH and Pulp potential.INTRODUCTIONFlotation of sphalerite is normally practised by adding CuSO4 as an activator under alkaline pH. Recently there have been a number of laboratory and plant examples of sphalerite flotation without deliberate addition of cu++ ions (Girczys, 1972; Mukherjee, 1976; McTavish, 1980; Marouf et al., 1986; Mielczarski, 1986; Leroux et al., 1987; Palsson and Forssberg, 1989; Sandoval-Caballero et al., 1990; Zhang et al., 1991).In batch tests, with a sample of Pb/Zn ore from Polaris, Leroux et al. (1987) found that sphalerite became floatable after adjusting pH to 9. 5-11: they ruled out natural floatability or the formation of elemental sulphur on the surface but suspected iron hydroxy compounds were responsible. Sandoval-Caballero (1990) conducted a continuous minicell test at Brunswick Mining and obtained a 44 % Zn recovery and 40.5 % Zn grade concentrate without deliberately adding CuS04 at pH= 10.5. (1991) revealed good sphalerite floatability (over 80% recovery) in pH range 8 to 11 and found that this floatability was related to pH, dissolved oxygen (DO) level and Fe++ species present in the system.To explore further the conditions under which sphalerite can float without addition of CuSO4 , a continuous pilot test using minicells was performed at Falconbridge Ltd., Kidd Creek division. The set-up is briefly described (a more detailed description is given elsewhere in these proceedings) with emphasis on the data acquisition system - dissolved oxygen, pulp potential and pH were monitored continuously. Results of testwork investigating pH, CuS04 addition and gas composition are presented."
